Police investigating gun threat at Navarre High School “I’m tired of schools acting like they own my kid instead of me. I own my kid.” –Dawn Shero
By Ashley Varese editor@navarrepress.com Parents filled the halls of Navarre High School Tuesday morning as they tried to check out their children following a report of a possible gun threat. Some parents were told that their children would not be dismissed due to testing.
NHS Principal Brian Noack said two students received text messages Monday night“stating a student may bring a gun to school tomorrow.” Law enforcement and school officials learned of the threat late Monday night and decided to increase police presence on campus Tuesday. Officials have said they don’t
believe the threat was credible and an investigation is ongoing. “We wanted to err on the side of caution as student safety is my highest priority and the school district’s highest priority,” Noack said. Most of the parents learned about the situation from their children through phone calls
and text messages. At about 9:30 a.m., students started driving off of campus, while parents arrived to sign out their children. Noack sent a message to parents at 10:16 a.m. alerting them to the threat, however, school was not locked down and Noack said it was a regulary scheduled day.
Santa Rosa County Deputy Rich Aloy said weapons were not found at the school and they didn’t have anyone in custody. He would not say whether the suspect was a student, nor would he confirm the validity of the text messages or their contents.

Tough Mudder challenge tougher than ever for Santa Rosa County It’s a 10-year-old boy’s dream – on steroids. There’s monkey bars, but they’re 20 feet off the ground and hanging over a pool of water. There’s a climbing wall, but it’s 13 feet high. Then there’s the water slide, but it ends in a wall of fire. The final touches are being made for the Tough Mudder-Gulf Coast, which takes place in Milton March 7, and features more than 20 obstacles along an 11.3mile running course. With 40,000 pounds of ice, ropes, fire, barbed wire, tear gas, hay bales and even electricity, athletes will need to stay on their toes. Construction manager Johnny Little said Feb. 26 the course was about 90 percent complete and the project had not hit any snags. “This is our season opener,”he said. “It’s going very well for it being our first time building many of these obstacles.” Little, who’s competed in five Tough Mudders, works with an eight-man team to build the entire course, which is spread over hundreds of acres, in about four weeks. “We work right up through Wednesday of the race week,”Little said, adding that they personally test the course by running it on Friday. Then they spend the week after tearing everything down, packing it and shipping it to the next race location. As always, a percentage of
the proceeds goes to Wounded Warriors. “And what’s remarkable about this contractor we have here is they donate a percentage of each of their construction bills to the Wounded Warriors at each event,”Little said. Mudder 2.0 The event is a testing ground for several new features offered by the Tough Mudder team. Every course is either brand new or has been revamped for this event. “We wanted to roll out all new obstacles, but (Tough Mudder fans) had favorites that we had to keep,”Little said. For example, the infamous Everest obstacle featured a nearly 12foot steeply graded wall to climb over. Everest 2.0 now has a 1.5 foot smooth, curved ledge added to the top, making it taller and more difficult to find something to help hoist over a racer.

Mighty mom preps for Tough Mudder By Shana Roberson shana@navarrepress.com
At 4 feet, 11 inches and closing in on her 40th birthday, Sonya Alford might not seem like your typical Tough Mudder athlete. But watch her flip a tire or jump over a box and you’ll immediately change your mind. Alford is no stranger to working out, but she recently stepped up her game to prepare for the 11-mile obstacle course taking place March 7 in Milton. “I’ve done the Mud Run in Niceville and it was a 5K, and then I had friends that did the Tough Mudder in Tennessee,” she said.“When we found out it was coming to Milton we decided we’re all going to do it together.” Alford said she knew this event would present new challenges she had not faced in other races. “This is definitely a team event,”she said.“Unlike the Mud Run in Niceville, there’s no way you can get over some of the obstacles on your own.You have to rely on other people to help you and you have to other people.” Alford’s team, the Mighty Mudders, is made up of six members. She said she enlisted professional help so she could get stronger to help her teammates.
