Memorial Day recognized in Navarre

By Jessi Stone Navarre Press Memorial Day is a day set aside to recognize the men and women who have died while protecting the nation.

People in Navarre can help remember those who have given their lives by attending the annual Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. Monday, May 28 at Navarre Park.

Ronald Engberg, Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 11367, said the event would probably last for about 45 minutes. The event will feature the Navarre High School JROTC posting of the colors and members will sing the national anthem.

Hurlburt Field announces reduction in force Staff reports Navarre Press Eighteen Hurlburt Field civilian employees will be placed into reduction in force (RIF) status this week, despite extensive voluntary measures and management reassignments over the past few months.

In November 2011, the Air Force announced the elimination of 100 positions in base support career fields at Hurlburt Field as a result of a Department of Defense-wide initiative to reduce civilian manpower to fiscal year 2010 levels in order to meet the President Barack Obama’s fiscal year 2012 budget.

State approves Opticom system

Chamber committee holds candidate forum

merce Government Affairs Committee.

County requests U.S. 98 sidewalks

By Jessi Stone Navarre Press Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners plan to ask the Florida Department of Transportation to construct sidewalks along U.S. Highway 98 to improve pedestrian safety.

Commissioner Lane Lynchard told commissioners during a May 21 meeting that a bicyclist had been hit by a vehicle on May 19 at College Parkway and U.S. 98. With the recent history of pedestrian deaths along U.S. 98 in Gulf Breeze and Navarre, Lynchard recommended asking FDOT for more sidewalks from Walmart in Gulf Breeze west to Naval Live Oaks.

Sheriff Hall running for last term Challengers seek sheriff’s seat

Sheriff Wendell Hall is running for one last term as sheriff of Santa Rosa County before Hall retiring.

If elected, Hall would be serving his fourth term as sheriff, making him the only fourth-term sheriff in Santa Rosa County.

“I’m not a career politician,” Hall said.“I’ve been in law enforcement since 1981 as a corrections officer and later as a law enforcement officer.”

Originally from Atmore, Ala., Hall graduated from Troy State

University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He and his wife Karen now reside in Pace.

He worked as a corrections officer, patrol deputy and a narcotics investigator for Escambia County Sheriff’s Office before being elected as sheriff of Santa Rosa County in 2000.

Hall said his long-term goal has always been to ensure that Santa Rosa County maintains its quality of life by keeping crime to a minimum.

tate education leaders warned us the new Florida Comprehensive Assessment Tests were tougher. School superintendents told us that test scores and school grades might dip. And boy, were they right.

The first year after the 2010 Florida Legislature added a writing requirement to the FCAT, more than 80 percent of fourth- and eighth-graders scored at Level 4 or higher – a big success.

At the tenth-grade level, three-fourths of students did equally well.

Teachers, it seems, had figured out how to teach writing to fit the test. The writing formula was simple. Even if a student had trouble with reading, he could score well in writing.

So last summer the state Board of Education changed how writing is scored, raising the bar for standard conventions such as spelling, punctuation and grammar. In the past, these elements were treated with leniency. In some ways, writing samples from 2011 were graded as drafts, while those from 2012 were evaluated as finished products.

And this year, the results were abysmal.

Only 27 percent of Florida fourth-graders scored at Level 4 or higher, down twothirds from the previous year. Similar plunges were seen at other grade levels, too.

In a conference call with members of the media, Education Commissioner Gerald Robinson refused to admit the state rushed this year’s changes. Instead, he blamed the dramatic drop on poor communications. He seemed to suggest that if DOE had better communicated the changes, teachers would have taught better, parents would have coached better

and students would have scored higher.

Listening to him brought to mind that scene in Cool Hand Luke: "What we have here is a failure to communicate."

For a state that trusts the FCAT to measure the quality of its public education system and the competency of its teachers, dramatic test-score declines can’t be dismissed as a simple communications error.

This year’s FCAT results have shaken the public’s trust.

In response, the Board of Education called an emergency meeting and unanimously agreed to lower the passing standard to Level 3.

And just like that, outcomes improved.

The number of passing fourth-graders is now 81 percent. Similar bumps were seen among eighth-graders and 10th-graders, too.

Wait a minute. Not so fast. This year’s terrible scores are a reality check in this game of high-stakes testing. For every year, our lawmakers tinker with public education using a measure we now know is unreliable. And every year, they throw something new at teachers right before school starts, and expect perfection.

New standards, new tests and new scoring systems need to be implemented not in rapid-fire succession, but with consideration. They should be tested and refined in the field before used to label the measure of our students, teachers, schools and school districts.

Our public schools aren’t failures. It’s the Florida Legislature and Board of Education that have failed our students and teachers, and by extension, all of us.

Hopefully you were able to get to the beach this past weekend for several reasons.

First of all, it was a beautiful weekend and a great day to be out at the beach. And, that may have been your last chance to enjoy the beach in the relatively quiet atmosphere. Memorial Day is Monday (May 28), and is the beginning of our summer tourist season. We love our tourists and want them to enjoy our beautiful shoreline and white sandy beaches. If we plan in advance, we can get a lot of beach and water time in before the season starts … which is basically now until Labor Day in September.

Speaking of visitors, the Navarre Press Visitor Guide was just delivered and we are busy getting it out at the key distribution locations for the big Memorial Day Weekend.You will be able to find the Visitor Guide at the Chamber/TDC building and in individual newspapers sold on Navarre Beach. They will also be in beach condos on Navarre Beach, including Summerwinds and the Navarre Regency. The other tourism information centers are Pensacola, Pensacola Beach, Okaloosa Island and Destin. They will also be available in hotels and condos on Navarre and Pensacola Beaches.

Did I mention we won 13 awards … I think I did last week. One of those awards was for our Visitor Guide.

Two years in a row we have won first place with our visitor guide – for the entire state of Florida. Not that I’m bragging or anything.

Fort Walton Beach Medical Center made an exciting announcement this week. It has joined the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Cancer Care Network as one of seven affiliates in the network to expand access to leading cancer care. The next closest affiliate is in Panama City. With this affiliation, the Medical Center will have access to a program to support community-based oncology services, by offering broader access to clinical trials, continuing medical education for nurses and oncologists and access to the latest education about advancements in the treatment and detection of cancer in the local community. This is a great thing for the greater community of Navarre, since we rely on the medical centers around us. Thankfully, we have great facilities to our north, east and west.

The Panhandle Butterfly House will have opened by the time you read this. It had an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. this morning, May 24. And, if you haven’t noticed, the splash pad is open and so is the pool at the YMCA. The YMCA swim team has started practicing.

That is also where the Navarre High School swim team members practice as well.

The Republican Club of Santa Rosa County will hold its next monthly meeting and Dutch treat dinner at 6:30 p.m. on June 5 at The Club at Hidden Creek, 3070 PGA Blvd, Navarre.

The featured speaker will be Mr. Ed Carson. Mr. Carson is a candidate for election to the Santa Rosa County Commission District 3.

Local landscaper develops new method for solving chronic lawn problems and restoring turf grass to good health Northwest Florida is one of the toughest areas in the country to maintain a healthy lawn. Skip confessed, "Most people are pretty amazed at what I am able to tell them about their lawn after I get done with my presentation. They have no idea how many different issues they have affecting their grass and making it unhealthy."

Skip charges $247 to perform a comprehensive lawn analysis. He said many people spend at least that much and more trying to figure out different solutions for their lawn on their own or by hiring other companies that don't take the time or effort to truly find the problem or problems with a lawn.

Skip describes a healthy lawn as a pyramid.

"The foundation of the pyramid is the irrigation system,”he said.“If it is not working efficiently, the lawn will not be right – period. The second side is environmental factors including soil conditions, thatch, root competition and light availability. The third side of the pyramid is pest control and fertilization. All three sides of the pyramid must be addressed to have a healthy lawn. We are one of very few companies that have the expertise and ability to work on all of these."

Retirement myths It is an unfortunate fact that many Americans spend less time planning for their retirement then planning for their vacations. All it takes is intelligent planning – and a clear understanding of the myths that hinder us from building a secure retirement.

Consider the following myths: Myth #1: I’m too young to worry about retirement.

You’re never too young to make plans. The sooner you begin saving for retirement, the less you’ll have to put aside. For example, if you want to have a $200,000 nest egg by age 65, you’ll only have to save about $26 a week if you start at age 35. But if you wait until you’re 55 to start, you’d have to put aside $233 every week.

(Both cases assume that your money is invested earning a hypothetical 9-percent return. This example is for illustrative purposes only and is not intended to reflect the actual performance of any security. Investing involves risk and you may incur a profit or a loss.)

Myth #2: I won’t need much to live on. Many experts estimate that on average, to maintain your standard of living in retirement, you’ll need between 80-100 percent of your preretirement income. And that income has to continue to grow enough in an attempt to keep up with inflation.

Myth #3: My kids will take care of me. Most children want to lend their aging parents a hand, but many can’t afford to. About the time you’re ready to retire, they’ll be paying their children’s college tuition – and saving for their own retirement.

Myth #4: Social Security will take care of me.

Although it’s unwise to expect Social Security to cover all your costs, you can take steps to increase your benefits. Work as long as possible.You can start collecting Social Security at age 62, but your benefits may be reduced by 20 percent. If, on the other hand, you work until age 70 you’ll receive even more.

Myth #5: I can’t afford to put money away where I can’t touch it for many years. The truth is, you can’t afford not to participate in tax deferred retirement plans. Contributions to 401(k) and similar employer sponsored plans may reduce your current taxation. In addition, taxes are also deferred on earnings, so retirement savings have the potential to grow faster than others do. Best of all, many employers match all or part of your contributions to employer sponsored retirement plans, giving you money you would not otherwise have. The one drawback is that you may have to pay a 10-percent penalty, plus current income taxes, if you withdraw money out of a retirement plan before you’re 59.5.

What should you do? A comfortable retirement requires looking the facts squarely in the face – creating a realistic plan that works for you. Of course, this brief article is no substitute for a careful analysis of your personal circumstances. There’s something to be said for changing your image, as long as you don’t compromise what you’re about, that is.

For James Dabney, owner of the East River Smokehouse, the same business that’s hosted Navarre residents from 1968 State Road 87 South for the last six years needed a change of scenery.

“Better location and the potential for more business, really. Better visibility,”said Dabney outside of the restaurant’s new site, which is currently under construction at 8491 Navarre Parkway.

What used to be a tourist attraction of sorts with“just four exterior walls”is progressively being transformed into a southern rustic work of art by Rick Rausch andTriple R Construction based in Navarre.

“We started working on this back in October, but we didn’t really start building until February,”said Dabney.“It’s an existing building, but it’s all brand new construction.

It’s a complete renovation to what used to be a beach shop.”

Dabney has gone to great lengths in an attempt to make the new-look East River Smokehouse stand out for its character and throwback, yet still modern, architecture.

For starters, the outside of the building will feature wooden barrels straight from the Lynchburg, Tenn., plant that once held Jack Daniels inside them. Just walking within six feet of the barrels will let one know they’re what Dabney termed“legit.”Upon entering the restaurant, customers will be able to look up and see windows dating back to 1910 from the Summerhouse eatery in Fort Walton Beach. And for those who step up to the bar, waiting for a drink will involve

leaning on an impressive red cedar tree from Andalusia, Ala. “You won’t see this anywhere else,” said Dabney pointing to the bar’s surface.

For Dabney, having started in the restaurant business as a dishwasher back in 1991 and later moving on to positions as a cook and bartender, the re-opening of his restaurant will be a sort of new beginning of something he genuinely enjoys.

“I’m a people person, so I get a chance to meet everybody and know everybody,” he said.“I’ve lived here since 1978, so I’ve been here a minute.”

The new building will be a huge step up from the existing location in every way.The inside will feature 5,000square-feet, while the outdoor patio will offer patrons between 6,000-8,000-square-

feet to move around and have a good time.

Aside from a host of other things, Dabney said one of his main goals with the new location will be to link the boardwalk stemming from the Navarre Park with the restaurant’s back patio.

He also said there is no official closing date of the present location, and that before the grand re-opening of the East River Smokehouse takes place, he wants his staff to be comfortable and ready for what could be a boom on the water’s edge.

“We will (host a grand re-opening) but not off the jump because we need to get everybody acclimated to the new location. So we want to be open for a few weeks before we throw a big shindig.”

The “new” East River Smokehouse is slated to officially open its doors in June.

Conflict management course Join the UF/IFAS Santa Rosa Sea Grant Extension and the Pensacola Bay Watershed Environmental Coordination Team by participating in a two-day instructor-led course designed to increase participants’ ability to design, conduct and manage public or targeted meetings. Realtors advocate for homeownership Realtors from Florida and across the U.S. – more than 10,000 strong – gathered at the Washington Monument in the nation’s capital May 17 to highlight the importance of housing and homeownership to the nation’s economic recovery. The “Rally to Protect the American Dream” is taking place during the National Association of Realtors (NAR) Midyear Legislative Meetings and Trade Expo. One pressing issue for homeowners is the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which is currently set to expire May 31. How long have you served as a board member? Since 2002.

What was your previous involvement with SRC schools? I am a former Santa Rosa County elementary teacher. I served as a PTA officer and member and school advisory council member. Parent of three SRC students. Parent, volunteer and business partner. I have continued to volunteer as a coach, PTO member and business partner over the years.

What lead you to want to run for this position?As a teacher and parent I felt that I should advocate for children.

I believe children are worth investing my time, energy, efforts and resources. I believe in our students and want to provide the best opportunities for them. I have worked to keep our school district excellent academically and financially sound. I believe I have brought a voice to the board that has kept students and their success as the center of my focus and as what fuels me to seek out the best for them.

What has been the biggest challenge during your time on the board?

The financial instability of our economy has created tough times, but it has provided the opportunity to think outside the box and to seek the most efficient ways to spend every dollar we have while measuring the effectiveness of every decision we have to make.

What do you feel is your biggest accomplishment?

I have kept students and their success as the center of my decisions. We are a team, so I feel we have made good financial decisions that have kept our district financially sound through tough times. We have improved our bus, janitorial and food services while I've served on the board. We have opened lines of communication to our stakeholders more efficiently, and the addition of the live stream meetings should prove effective in making our meetings available to everyone.

Why should community members be involved in the school board proceedings?The success of our district hinges on involvement from all stakeholders. Realizing that the job is impossible for one but successful when everyone brings their talents to the table, we encourage communication and input from all of these areas. We have started live streaming our meetings so that everyone can view the meetings even if they can't attend. Parent, student, and teacher surveys help us see successes and areas we need to improve.

If you could change one thing about education in Santa Rosa County what would it be and why? I believe we do an outstanding job educating our students, however, I would love to offer more career academies at our high schools, more opportunities for our liberal arts students and more technology in

every classroom. Tough budget constraints have limited us, but I look forward to the time we can expand our course offerings and resources.

What kinds of things do you and your family do for fun/enjoyment?We love the outdoors so bike riding, boating, canoeing, going to the beach are among our favorites.

We also love attending sports events at our local schools. We live in an amazing place.

Kids power up at Holley Navarre Primary

By Joanna Hammond Navarre Press Holley-Navarre Primary School hosted a pilot program on May 15 with Kid Power: Operation Lunch Line, designed to help children make healthy choices about food and exercise.

The presentation to HNP’s second-graders was a unique blend of entertainment and education. The hour-long show lets children explore inside the body in 3D, showing the mechanics of digestion by going inside the body of a boy named Max, who doesn’t feel very well because he doesn’t eat properly or exercise enough.

The Kid Power assembly was brought to the Santa Rosa County School district as a partnership with the Santa Rosa County Health Department. Debbie Price, nursing program specialist with the SRCHD, worked with the school district to make the program a reality.

“Did you know there are 30,000 kinds of plants that humans can eat?”Kid Power asked the students.

He sang a tune about the different kinds of plants that children can try, stressing that even if they were picky eaters, chances are they could find more than a few choices that they liked.

Part of the presentation included encouraging children to read labels and stay away from processed foods,

and to choose healthier whole foods instead. The students sang along with the songs and danced in their seats with the presentation.

Kid Power taught students about keeping a calorie balance within their bodies by balancing calories in with the foods they eat and calories out with activities that move the body.

“All movement is calories out,”he told the crowd, and then he taught them

The Go Crazy Dance in the style of the popular video game Dance, Dance Revolution.

The presentation ended with Kid Power singing about how there are all types of bodies in the world and they are all suited for different tasks, and every body is a good body.

Kid Power’s alter ego is Bruce Wilson, whose background in musical theater began when he answered a

call for the touring company of Slim Goodbody, the children’s health program started by John Burstein in 1975. Wilson toured as Goodbody for seven years before creating Kid Power.

“I fell in love with working with kids,”said Wilson.

“In 2008 I built my own show and I began to pursue my dream of a modern program where I had creative control.”

Kids’ college camp Kids’ College, a Pensacola State College summer program, features fun classes and specialized camps on the Pensacola and Warrington campuses. Kids’ College runs June 11 to Aug. 10 and is geared for children 6-12 years old. Courses are offered between 8 a.m.-4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday in separate age groups.

Rosa County Schools because it tied in so well with the current push toward educating children on the importance of physical activity and good nutrition.

“This program was introduced to me at a Florida Association of School Nurses conference this February,”Price said. “With the needed emphasis on healthy nutrition and physical activity – it provided an ‘out of the box’ method of delivering this message in line with the messages of school health and the nutrition collaborative partners in Santa Rosa County.”

Price said she felt the pilot program at HNP was a big success.

“The program was very well received by those in attendance, especially the students,” she said.“Many of the collaborative partners and teachers in attendance were equally as pleased with the program. I am hoping to find ways to bring Kid Power into the schools of Santa Rosa County to spread the excitement and energy for the students to make healthy nutrition and physical activity choices.”

Spring Chorus concert West Navarre Primary School will be having a Spring Chorus Concert at 6:30 p.m. May 31 in the school cafeteria. The second-grade chorus students will be singing songs from around the world.

March 27 ■ An officer responded to East River Drive in reference to an unattended death. Upon arrival the officer was directed to the garage of the residence and found an adult male hanging from his neck by an electrical extension cord. The officer reported that neighbors claimed they hadn’t seen the victim in several days. The officer reported that he was familiar with the deceased, later identified as Omar Alford, from previous law enforcement contacts. The officer saw no other signs of trauma

and no weapons nearby.

There was no one else in the residence and no signs of forced entry. No note was found during a search of the house.

■ An officer responded to Rexford Street in reference to a domestic disturbance. The complainant stated she had been having problems with her son.

She said he had been throwing items in the house and breaking things because he was told that he couldn’t go into her bedroom to use the computer. She said he had left the residence and when

he returned, she was standing in the driveway.

She told the officer her son was driving at a high rate of speed and was coming right toward her without slowing down. She told the officer that she was looking directly at him and said he was looking at her when he was pulling in the drive. She said she was afraid he was going to hit her if she hadn’t jumped out of the way. A witness next door was present during the incident and confirmed the same story as the mother. The son said he had not done anything and no one was around when he got home. The officer noted that he observed skid marks in the driveway where the mother said her son almost hit her. The son was arrested for one count of aggravated assault.

March 28 ■ An officer responded to Woodstock Smoke Shop in reference to an activated business alarm. Upon arrival, the officer observed the windows to the business smashed. A K-9 search revealed that no suspects were inside. The manager of the building was then allowed to go inside to check if anything was missing. She said a tobacco water pipe worth $50; two larger water pipes worth $130-190 and 10 glass bowls worth $15 apiece were missing.

Another water pipe worth $180 was broken. She said the estimated window damage was about $400.

Security cameras caught images of two black males and one white male breaking into the building. The report gave no further information.

March 30 ■ An officer responded to Panhandle Trail in reference to a possible suicide attempt. The officer made contact with the female, and reported that she appeared to be highly intoxicated and could not keep her balance. She told the officer she had several recent problems with her family and she wanted to kill herself. She said took 40 Clonidine, 20 Amitriptyline and drank five beers. An ambulance arrived to treat the female.

The officer reported that she met the criteria for an involuntary Baker Act and was transported to Fort Walton Medical Center.

April 1 ■ An officer was on patrol and observed a vehicle parked on the westbound side on U.S. Highway 98 facing the wrong

way. The officer turned around to check on the vehicle to make sure the occupants were not injured. As the officer began to turn around, he reported that he saw a white female running toward him. The officer made contact with the female who said she was OK. The other vehicle was circling around at that point and made contact with the patrol car. The driver told the officer he and the female had gotten into an argument and she was running down the highway. He said he was trying to get her back into the car so she wouldn’t get hurt. He denied any type of threat or acts of violence.

The female said she had been drinking and got into an argument with the driver. She said there were no threats or acts of violence and she wanted to get back in the car now. The officer confirmed that the male and female didn’t have any domestic violence injunctions and they were allowed to leave.

■ Officers responded to Catamaran Drive in reference to an unknown 911 complaint. Both officers could hear arguing coming from the residence but couldn’t make out what it was about because the argument was in Spanish.

The officers made contact with the couple and one officer stayed outside with the female while the other went inside to talk to the male. The husband stated he and his wife had been arguing earlier that day about money and responsibilities and were calling each other names.

He said his wife got in his face and he pushed her.

The wife confirmed the same story. She said when he pushed her she fell against the wall and onto the floor. She said she didn’t make any aggressive moves toward her husband before being pushed.

Based on the statements, the husband was arrested for domestic violence battery. The officer reported that the wife said several times that she didn’t want her husband to go to jail and that she was not afraid of him.

April 3 ■ An officer responded to State Road 87 South and Choctaw Field Road in reference to a disturbance. Dispatch advised that the male complainant stated his wife ordered him to stop the vehicle and she got out and began walking south on S.R. 87.

While the officer was trying to locate the wife, dis-

patched advised that she got back into the vehicle and the couple was heading toward their home on Blankenship Road. The officer made contact with the couple at the residence.

The husband stated that they were returning from Milton and he turned on the radio. He stated his wife got upset and ordered him to pull over. He said she got out of the car and started walking and that she ran into the woods on a few occasions. He said he called law enforcement because she would not get back in the car and he was concerned for her safety.

The wife stated they were supposed to move into their new residence in Milton, but when they arrived at the new house it was a mess and she could not live in it. The husband agreed to stay at the house in Milton for the night.

April 4 ■ An officer was on patrol at Flintwood Drive and Edgewood Drive when he observed two motorcycles traveling at a high rate of speed. The officer reported that he followed the motorcycles at 70 miles per hour and they were still pulling away from him. The patrol officer attempted to catch up to the motorcycles with his lights and sirens on.

The first motorcycle pulled over but the second kept going eastbound on U.S. Highway 98. The driver that pulled over did not have a valid driver’s license for Florida but said he had a valid license in Maryland. Dispatch advised that the driver had a warrant in Santa Rosa County for larceny and his Maryland license was suspended. He was arrested.

While being transported to Santa Rosa County Jail, the officer reported that the subject said he could get his motorcycle up to 220 mph and that the officer was lucky he decided to stop.

April 6 ■ An officer met with a complainant on Navarre Parkway who claimed her boyfriend had hit her. She told the officer that she was on vacation with her boyfriend and they had been traveling around Destin most of the day.

She said they started arguing when they returned to her boyfriend’s uncle’s house on Cagle Drive. She said her boyfriend kept yelling and cussing at her and began striking her in the face during the argument. She showed the officer how her boyfriend had grabbed her shirt and tried

The officer reported that he noticed a red mark beside the left side of her nose and on the front right of her shoulder. A witness stated she tried to get between the boyfriend and girlfriend fighting but said the boyfriend pulled her hair and pulled her out of the way. The girlfriend refused medical attention for her injuries. The officer made contact with the boyfriend who claimed nothing happened. Based on the girlfriend and the witness’ statements, the boyfriend was arrested for battery.

April 7 ■ An officer responded to Santa Rosa County Road Department in reference to a burglary complaint. The road department supervisor told the officer that someone had broken into their storage shed. He stated that someone had popped the lock on the door to the shed and took two gas cans and a case of oil and sat it outside the shed but nothing appeared to be missing.

He said someone tried to pry open the back door and the front door of the office building but did not gain entry. The supervisor told the officer that someone also had gone through all seven vehicles and someone also removed the cover of the fuse box that was located on the side of the office building.

The officer processed the crime scene but was unable to find any fingerprints on the seven vehicles or the doors of the building. The officer noticed shoe prints from the outside fence that led to the business and found tire tracks from a small offroad vehicle outside of the fenced area. A knife also was found on a picnic table and the supervisor said it did not belong to any of the employees. He gave the officer a name of a suspect who he claimed stole items from other people in the area. The supervisor also said the suspect owned a“Gator.”The officer went to the suspect’s address and saw the Gator as well as a shoe print that was similar to the one at the road department office.

Sandbagging in All-Star race irritates fans

By Jenna Fryer AP Auto Racing Writer CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — It didn't take teams very long to figure out their best shot at winning the AllStar race would be in the first 20 laps.

What few predicted, though, was that the new format would encourage drivers to take it easy for portions of Saturday night's (May 19) $1 million race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Now fans are upset winner Jimmie Johnson essentially sandbagged for 60 or so laps before turning it up for a final charge to his third All-Star race victory.

"Everybody knew if you could win that first segment, you could control the night," said Johnson, who indeed won the first of four 20-lap segments.

Under the format for this year's race, the winners of

each of the first four 20lap segments lined up 1through-4 for the mandatory trip down pit road.

Once there, it was a race to simply be the first drivers to get back on the track for the final 10-lap sprint to the finish.

So Johnson claimed the first segment, then faded to the back of field for next three segments. Matt Kenseth joined him at the rear after winning the second segment, and although Brad Keselowski was reluctant to follow the same strategy, he also went to the back when his team insisted it was the best strategy after the third segment.

"Obviously there was a debate whether or not to run hard or conserve your stuff," Keselowski said. "I hate conserving race cars.

They're meant to run hard.

I just wanted to make sure that everybody on my team

was on the same plan, and they were. So I've got to do what they tell me."

It wasn't all that popular for race fans, who seemed nonplussed by the three-wide racing through the pack that accentuated several of the opening segments. Instead, many seemed annoyed that Johnson, Kenseth and Keselowski had no incentive to race once they won their segments.

Johnson, who claimed "when the rules came down, every crew chief in the garage area realized the importance of that first segment," was reluctant to criticize the latest AllStar race format. It was the eighth change to the format since the race was created in 1985.

"That's going to be tough for me to knock the system after how our night went because it just worked out exactly how we'd

hoped," he said.

But NASCAR has long touted its All-Star event as the only one in professional sports where the participants actually try hard, and Saturday night managed to discredit that theory.

It was clearly difficult for runner-up Keselowski, who made a solid attempt at sugarcoating the strategy of just riding around at the back of the field. He didn't seem all that believable, though, following his second-place finish.

"I'll race whatever rules you have," he said. "I'll race as hard as it takes to win. That was what it took to win. So, you know, I can't say I feel great about it. Happy that we were good enough to win one of the segments."

There are also new questions about the length of the final segment.

The idea of making it

just 10 laps was obviously to create a frantic, allout, sprint to the $1 million prize. But Carl Edwards proved last year that if a driver can get a good start, he can build enough of a lead that can't be overcome in 10 laps.

After Johnson won the race down pit road on Saturday night, he, too, got a good restart and checked out from the rest of the field. Nobody had a chance to catch him in such a short sprint, but Keselowski said Johnson was so good, he wouldn't have been able to catch him in 100 laps.

Kenseth, who restarted second and finished third, thought 10 laps gave Johnson a decided advantage.

"You got somebody as fast as him out front, there was no way I was going to have a shot in 10 laps," Kenseth said. "Ten laps is kind of short, but yet the fastest car was out front. It

And for Johnson, it put him alongside the late Dale Earnhardt and teammate Jeff Gordon as the only drivers to win three AllStar races.

Johnson's win came a week after he gave team owner Rick Hendrick his 200th Cup victory with a win at Darlington. With five Sprint Cup championships on his resume, this latest All-Star win was yet another feat in Johnson's bid to rewrite the record books.

"I've got a lot of years left ahead of myself," he said. "I want to leave my mark in this sport when I hang up my helmet. We're doing a great job of that."

already dark," says Baumgardner. "We assumed in the morning Chewie would find his way home." That never happened. The family notified HomeAgain, called local shelters, a local pet store and Chewie's groomer, all to no avail. Time went by, and eventually the Baumgardners moved to Lompoc, Calif.

"We all knew Chewie might have been hit by a car, or who knows what," says Anita. "The hope was that maybe he was picked up by another family who just didn't check to see if he had a microchip."

Having a microchip alone is of little value. It's like having a cell phone without a phone number.

Pet owners need to register their contact information with the microchip provider and keep it up to date. Anita did provide new information when the family moved. In April

And she will sign copies of her book, "Betty and Friends: My Life at the Zoo." It's a mostly picture book compiled over the years with facts about animals. She closes her book with parting shots of a giraffe's behind, followed by a bear's behind.

When White has a chance to visit a zoo, she said she likes to stay for a long time and watch the animals relax. She

"No, it's Chewie," said the caller.

"Well, this was two years later. I nearly fell out of my chair," Anita recalls.

It turns out Chewie had been spotted walking along a road and was picked up by a good Samaritan. The pet lover did the right thing, having Chewie scanned for a microchip at a local shelter. Because his registration information was up to date, HomeAgain was easily able to contact Anita.

Family members promptly headed to Arizona to pick up Chewie.

Shelter staff said that even before Anita and Chewie were reunited,

wrote her book to let people know about all the good zoos do.

"So many people say, 'Oh, I hate zoos. I want all the animals to be back in their natural habitat,'" she said. "Well, you know what we've done to their natural habitat.

"Without zoos, we would have lost already so many species."

White says she's fascinated by nearly every creature, even snakes, and has a hard time naming favorites. She does love elephants, bears and poodles, though, to name a few.

On May 25, the Smithsonian's National Zoo will roll out the red carpet to give White a look at their research efforts behind the scenes. She will also sign copies of her book.

Zookeepers plan to show her the Asian elephants up close, including Shanthi who plays harmonica with her trunk, as well as the popular pandas, the great apes and the Panamanian golden frog. The zoo is leading an effort to fight a fastspreading fungus blamed for wiping out dozens of amphibian species.

Zoo spokeswoman Pamela Baker-Masson said the scientists and animal keepers are excited to host White.

"It's very personal for us because she's beloved by millions," she said. "For my colleagues to know that someone who actually cares about them and cares about their work conserving species is coming here ... We're really honored, quite frankly."

The reunion was joyous on all sides.

"Chewie looked pretty good. He'd even gained some weight, though he had a few missing teeth," says Anita.

No one knows exactly where Chewie was for two years; perhaps he'll write a "tell all" book.

Gaby was especially elated about the reunion.

She posted photos every day for weeks on her Facebook page.

"Our dogs are a part of our family, and very important to us," says Anita. "I think most people feel that way, which is why I'm such an enthusiastic supporter of microchipping."

Of course, without this service, many of the one million animals recovered through HomeAgain would have been euthanized.

"Our family is sure grateful," Baumgardner says.

“In writing our students knocked it out of the park,” said Superintendent Tim Wyrosdick.“The proficiency of our students compared statewide was excellent.”

DOE increased the proficiency standards for the FCAT test last year in an effort to better prepare students for college. However, the DOE called an emergency meeting May 15 to lower the proficiency level from 4 back down to 3 after preliminary results showed that only onethird of students in Florida passed the more rigorous writing standard.

Wyrosdick said the new FCAT writing test was much more difficult compared to previous years, and teachers were doing their best to teach students detail-supported writing.

Even though the passing level was lowered to 3 only for this year, Santa Rosa County’s mean testing scores were well above 3. Fourthgrade testers had a mean score of 3.3, eighth-graders had a mean score of 3.5 and 10th-graders had a mean score of 3.6.

“I’m pleased with the scores and excited we’re still ranked very high,”Wyrosdick said.

“I’m highly pleased with what our teachers have done to prepare them, but we still have a long way to go to get to where we need to be.”

He said one reason DOE changed the passing score back to 3 was because districts hadn’t received appropriate directions on how to prepare students for the everchanging standards.

“You don’t set a cut score on any test. It’s poor policy without consist, reliable data, and I think they have learned that,”he said.

“Yesterday’s (May 15) vote by the State Board of Education to recalibrate the school grading scale of the FCAT Writing test was done in response to a tougher grading system that appropriately expects our students to understand proper punctuation, spelling and grammar.

The Board acted after it became clear that students were posting significantly lower scores under newer, tougher writing standards,” said Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson in a press release.

Sarasota County placed first in fourth-grade testing scores with a 3.5 mean and Martin County placed first in eighth-grade testing scores with a 3.7 mean. Palm Beach, St. Johns, Sarasota and Seminole counties tied Santa Rosa for first place in tenth-grade writing scores with a 3.6 mean.

According to DOE results, 81 percent of fourth-graders in the state as well as 81 percent of fourth-graders in Santa Rosa County met the revised writing standard.The state average for eighthgraders was 78 percent, but Santa Rosa County exceeded that average with 84 percent of eighth-graders meeting the standard. Eighty-eight percent of Santa Rosa County tenth-graders met the standard compared to the state average of 84 percent.

He is running in the election as a Republican. He grew up in Santa Rosa County and attended Santa Rosa County Christian Academy and Pensacola State College with a degree in criminal justice. He joined the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office in 1977.

He left the sheriff’s office in 1984 to help his family ambulance service, but decided to return to the sheriff’s office in 1985. During his time with the sheriff’s office, Sloan said he supervised the budget for about every division. He retired in 2005 as a captain.

“I’ve always wanted to run and after working with five different sheriffs, I want to use what I learned to make Santa Rosa County one of best (departments) in the state,” Sloan said.

He said he wanted to help build up the morale of personnel and implement a care program to encourage personnel to be especially sensitive to the needs of senior citizens and victims of crime.

“I want to streamline the department without cutting services,” he said.

He said the current sheriff’s office budget was about $30 million and a large percentage of the budget going toward personnel. While he doesn’t know exactly what could be cut from the budget at this point, he said he would use common

The question selection committee will review the questions. The committee will meet with Chamber President/CEO Kelley Fuller and Chamber Board Chairman John Hays to review the selected questions one week before the forum.

Each candidate will be allotted one minute to introduce him/herself and will

be allowed up to 90 seconds to answer each question.

Hays will moderate the forum, and Agnew will ask the questions.

The candidates who have accepted an invitation to attend are supervisor of elections’ candidates Buck Lee and Tappie Villane; sheriff candidate Wendell Hall; clerk of court candidate Don Spencer; school board candidates Joseph Pool and

The candidate forum will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Holley-Navarre Middle School.

He said the agency didn’t have many policies and procedures in place when he first took office.

“But now everyone is on the same page and knows what is expected of each other,” he said.

challenge has been dealing with a limited budget caused by the economic downturn.

Two of three crime prevention specialist positions were cut and an entire traffic unit was dissolved so those deputies could go back to patrolling. If more money was available, he said he would reinstate those positions“so we could be more proactive as opposed to reactive.”

“But we know times are hard for everyone and property values have declined,” Hall said.

However, the sheriff’s office has come up with ways to

generate new revenue streams. The Santa Rosa County Jail gets paid to house inmates for other state and federal agencies.

The jail also charges inmates for certain services unless they are indigent and the sheriff’s office charges for copies of public record requests. Hall said the additional revenue streams generated nearly $2 million for the sheriff’s office during the last fiscal year.

Hall has also witnessed many changes in technology that have made the department more efficient. Deputies now have a tremendous

amount of information right at their fingertips. He said new technology has made for better trained and more qualified officers.

Three other candidates have pre-filed to run for sheriff, but Hall said he hoped the people in Santa Rosa County would continue to trust him for another four years.

“We’re going to keep doing what we’re doing and we’re always looking for better and more efficient ways to do our job,”he said.“My goal is to not slack off. I want to be remembered as the sheriff that did what he was elected to do.”

Roper, 57, has been a Florida Highway Patrol trooper for 33 years in Santa Rosa County.

While he and his wife Melissa live in Chumuckla, Roper said his patrol route is along U.S. Highway 98 in the south end of the county. He has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with a minor in psychology.

“I have always patrolled Santa Rosa County, and I’ve been proactive (in) law enforcement for 30 plus years,” he said. While Hall patrolled Escambia County before becoming sheriff, Roper said he knows“every north and south-end road in the county.”

Roper said he had several

reasons for running for sheriff, including bringing“respect, dignity and discipline”to the sheriff’s office.

He added that he would put fairness back into the sheriff’s department. When asked to give an example, Roper said the current administration made all deputies take their patrol cars to be repaired at one auto repair place in Milton. He said allowing deputies to have their vehicles repaired elsewhere would keep officers in their districts and also“promote growth and help small businesses.”

Roper said deputies in Gulf Breeze and Navarre shouldn’t have to drive to Milton for car repairs.“They’re burning gas that we pay for and burning time that we pay for. It’s

not cost effective,”he said.

Another goal for Roper is to re-establish the traffic unit that was disbanded during Hall’s time in office. Hall said the unit had to be cut because of budget restraints, but Roper said there were grants that could be utilized to keep a traffic unit in place.

“Now you have to wait an hour and a half for troopers to respond to wrecks,”Roper said, because troopers are so spread out. He said the sheriff’s office has an agreement with FHP allowing troopers to do traffic reports and investigations because the sheriff’s office doesn’t have a specific unit for that duty.

However, Roper wants to have three full-time road officers to investigate traffic accidents

He said he would like to have school resource officers in the middle schools in addition to the high schools to positively influence students earlier in their lives.

“We need officers at least at the middle school,”he said.

“We want them (students) to run to police and not from them.”

As for dealing with budget restraints during this economic climate, Roper said he would be open to suggestions. He said people in office for a long period of time tend to stop trying to improve.

“Once you’re in a position you get stagnate, and you don’t look for change – you don’t go out and aggressively try to do things,”he said.

He said he didn’t want to make a career out of being sheriff but just wanted to see if some of his ideas would improve the services to the county. He said the patrol and investigations units also could

be improved, and he would like to see more personnel working on major crimes, including crimes against children and the elderly.

“The clearance rate tends to increase when officers are trained in specific areas,” he said.

William Randall Cutts of Milton prefiled to run for sheriff in March, but he said he has yet to collect enough petition card signatures or pay the fee to qualify.

Holley-Navarre Fire District Chief Ron Norton said he felt the Opticom system was a good use of funds and an important safety measure, but equipping the department’s vehicles would require approval from the commissioners.

“We would need approval,” said Norton.“Other departments have. When we brought it up (several years ago), we were told we couldn’t. But Commissioner (Lauretta) Aiken has been looking into grants.”

The cost of setting up each vehicle in the district is $4,000.

Norton said it is possible to use impact fee money for that purpose and the HNFD could outfit the vehicles in stages.

Nine vehicles in total would need the emitter kits to receive the Opticom signals from the lights in order to control the traffic signals.

All local, state and federal emergency agencies can utilize the system if their vehicles are equipped with the emitter kits.

The next meeting of the Holley-Navarre Fire District Commissioners will be held at 7 p.m. on May 28 at Station 45.

By Jessi Stone Navarre Press The Santa Rosa County Tourist Development Council will not ask for proposals from marketing companies after discussing the issue during a May 16 meeting.

TDC board member Mike Loera made the motion to put out a request for proposal for marketing companies because the TDC has had a contract with MDi Media Group since late 2009.

The TDC north-end committee recommended putting out a RFQ during a May 2 meeting. Loera made the same motion during a May 9 TDC south-end committee meeting, but the motion died without a second.

“It sounded like everyone thought it was just a big hassle,” Loera said at the May 16 meeting.

County Commissioner Jim Melvin said there had been enough discussion about it, and the board just needed to vote on the matter.

Loera made the motion to ask for RFQs and TDC board member Jack Sanborn seconded the motion.

TDC member Kati Curle and Melvin voted no and TDC Chairman Vernon Compton had to break the tie. Compton also voted against the motion. He said a majority of the feedback he had received regarding MDi was positive.

Hurricane season: Are you ready?

By Yvonne C. Harper Navarre Press The rain is coming down and the wind is picking up – what started as a tropical depression has transformed into a Category 3 hurricane with winds between 111-129 miles per hour.

You thought you were going to ride it out, but the Weather Channel is reporting that the trajectory of the hurricane has suddenly shifted east and it is roaring your way – land fall predicted in three to four hours.

Are you ready?

Do you know where your important documents are such as wills, life insurance policies, homeowners’ insurance policy or birth certificates? Does your car have enough gas to get you out of the area? Do you have enough food and water to feed you or your family for at least three days?

What about your pets? If you leave, will you take them with you or will they stay? If they remain behind, where will you put them? Do you know which shelters allow pets?

If you have children with disabilities and you can’t evacuate, do you know where the shelters are? Do you know how to get there? Do you know the best evacuation route should you decide to leave?

Do you know where you will go and do you have the funds to get there?

Do you have enough medication for you or your family for last at least a week?

Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) members and supporters return from their 100-mile ride with members declaring the ride a success.

By Yvonne C. Harper Navarre Press For the members of Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA), “kick stand up”is more than just a term that means ready to ride. It’s a mentality that exemplifies their immediate readiness to assist any abused child in need.

On May 19, the Hurricane Alley chapter of BACA participated in the annual 100-mile ride to help raise awareness and funds for the organization.

The 100-mile-ride has been on-going since the organiza-

tion’s beginning in 1995. This year BACA members from chapters in 43 states and chapter members in Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and South Africa made the ride on the same day.

“The world has become more aware,”said Arizona, the Hurricane Alley child liaison.

“People have known it’s (child abuse) been going on for generations, but folks began to realize in the 1980s that there is a different way.”

Arizona first became aware of BACA when he saw some

guys in Daytona Beach wearing the patch. He went and talked to them and about a year later he realized there was a chapter in the area. He has been with this chapter for four years.

“This is not about me,”he said.“It’s about the children and giving back to the community.”

The “it’s not about me” approach permeates through each chapter member.

Chapter member Trike reinforced that attitude when he said,“I just want to help kids.”

Students construct their dream home

By Jessi Stone Navarre Press Students in Navarre High School’s Construction Academy had the chance to build their dream home while also learning a few valuable lessons.

Students had to design a house to scale and constructed the frame of the home. On May 17, students presented their homes and answered questions.

Amber Carroll said her group put a lot of time and effort into their final project in Jim Wendell’s construction academy class.

“We definitely learned about teamwork and time management,”she said.“And worst case scenario, we could build a house.”

The group, which included Carroll, Brad Leggett, Daniel Crump, Will McMahan and Tyler Jacobi, created a home that was beautifully designed as well as

heating and cooling. The house also was designed with a domed roof to keep out the draft.

Justin Cooper and James Mullin also designed their home with the environment in mind. Their design

included all bamboo flooring to keep bugs out, energy-efficient light bulbs and all Energy Start appliances.

Senior Spencer Powell designed a 5,100-square foot home that he said would cost about $2.5 million to complete. His design included a large, open living room with vaulted ceilings, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a game room or office space and a lot of natural light.

For Powell, this project was much more than a final grade. He has been working on the blueprint design for several years, adding that it was his dream home if he can ever afford it.

He will be attending Mississippi State University College of Architecture this fall.

“This class has been extremely helpful,”he said.“I see it as on-the-job preparation for when I go to college.”

The Santa Rosa County Division of Emergency Management has prepared a Disaster Preparedness Guide that stresses the need to prepare before a hurricane hits and to have a plan of action. According to Sheryl Bracewell, Division of Emergency Management director,“Pre-disaster planning can have a dramatic impact on minimizing tragedy.”

Emergency Management provides 10 things that can be done before a hurricane strikes to mitigate the stress and chaos that accompanies any severe storm.

BACA is a non-profit 501(C)3 and all proceeds benefit abused children. The organization was founded

by John Paul“Chief”Lilly in Utah.

As a licensed clinical social worker and professor at Brigham Young University, he worked with abused children and soon realized that there was a gray area that treatment facilities, children homes, law enforcement and court are unable to fill.

So he and other biker friends filled that need by cre-

Veterans helping veterans

By Joanna Hammond Navarre Press Paul Jenkins is a military veteran. He spent 20 years in the military before he retired. During his career with the Air Force he did many different jobs, ending up as the non-commissioned officer in charge of the Ophthalmology clinic at Eglin AFB. Jenkins will be the first to tell you that when he was in the Air Force, it was a different world. In 20 years, he deployed only once.

When he was looking to retire, his wife Jane drove through Navarre and told him that was where she wanted to settle, and settle they did.

The Jenkins opened Navarre Beach Realty in 2003. In the years since, they were progressively searching for ways they could give back to the military community.

“We were thinking of ways to help the military with the deployments and the extra burdens they face,” Paul said.“It’s very easy for us to do, by putting ourselves in our customer’s shoes.”

Paul and Jane came up with two very unique programs for military families.

The Active Duty Commission Sharing Program gives 20 percent of the selling commission back to activeduty families that purchase ago to meet with MDi staff and suggest improvements to the site’s navigation and local calendar events.

Meridith South, president of MDi’s media division, told the board last month that all the suggestions had been implemented on the site.

Curle said MDi came into a bad situation because it was trying to manage the site while the TDC had a different company, Jump Start Marketing, handling the search engine optimization.

Compton said MDi also had a challenge trying to appease both south-end and north-end needs.

“So we offer our own complications to their process,” he said.

That program has been very successful, said Jane, so much so that she has lost count of the number of families who have taken advantage of the program.

Paul, however, wanted to do something more. He said today’s military families were being asked to do so much more than the military had been asked to do in years past. The number of deployments has risen, and the length of those tours has grown, putting stress on young families.

What struck Paul was seeing the young men and women returning from wars overseas with multiple to see what other companies and prices are available right now since MDi has had the contract for more than two years.

The board suggested channeling ideas through Wilkes and she could relay them to South and other MDi staff.

Sanborn also said he felt like he had to continually ask for MDi to market the north end of the county. He added that a marketing agency was supposed to market the uniqueness of an area, but MDi didn’t give enough focus to Blackwater River State Forest, which is the largest state forest.

Compton said the TDC had come a long way in terms of working together to accomplish tourism goals.

“I don’t want to get back to north end versus south end,”he said.

“We are happy to do so,” said Paul.“Those guys and gals have been in harm’s way for sure.”

One person at Navarre Beach Realty who helped spearhead the program and bring it to fruition is Jenn Boor, a military spouse and mom to Alex, 5, and Brian, 2.

“Jenn has been instrumental in getting this started,” Paul said.

“It’s a big part (of my life) being a military spouse, besides being a mother,” Jenn said, whose husband Josh is currently deployed for the fourth time in two years.“Seeing friends come home who were hurt, I knew I wanted to be a part of it.”

The Purple Heart Program was announced in April, and so far, no one has come forward to utilize it.

Paul, Jane and Jenn all want the military community to know about the program that was specifically designed to assist wounded warriors.

“We want to get the word out,” Paul said.“This is a military owned and operated brokerage.”

The Navy will have its chance to begin training and orientation with its version of the Lightning later this year. “The Navy squadron will officially stand up in the fall with the arrival of the first

F-35C,�said Cuttita.

For now, all the training is building upon itself. The flights that have been done in the F-35A are helping to build the skills needed to pilot the F-35B. “Next up,�said Cuttita, “flying the first F-35B sortie. We've been flying local orientation flights in the F35A to include our first twoship formation and refueling.�

Make pizza night a fiesta

Pizza night is a popular pastime for many families, but if you’re looking to change things up from the typical Italian style, try adding a south of the border spin.

St. Ann teens receive the Sacrament of Confirmation

Thirty-eight teens and one adult received the Sacrament of Confirmation on May 5 at a special Mass at St. Ann Catholic Church. The candidates and their sponsors, parents and friends enjoyed a delicious banquet to celebrate afterward in Niekclsen Hall, prepared by parishioner Steve Lillo and served by Faith Formation staff and volunteers. Confirmation is a Sacrament in which the Holy Spirit is given to those already baptized in order to make them strong and good Christians.

Mothers deem attachment parenting natural

Harper Navarre Press The term attachment parenting has officially entered the lexicon of American language with the glaring headline“Are you Mom Enough?”on the May 10 issue of Time magazine accompanied by a photo of a mother with her fully-clothed 3-year-old standing on a chair attached to her breast.

The teaser under the headline was,“Why attachment parenting drives some mothers to extremes and how Dr. Bill Sears became their guru.”

But for self-described attachment parent Jen Arsenault of Navarre the term may be new, but the method is not.

“Even though attachment parenting is coming to light in America,” Arsenault said,“in other cultures that’s just parenting.”

According to William Sear, M.D. and author,“attachment parenting is a style of caring for your infant that brings out the best in the baby and the best in the parents.”

For Lauren Frede of Navarre, that is what appealed to her about the parenting style.

“I’ve heard people say you need to let the baby know who is in charge,”she said,“well she’s 3 months old, right now she is in charge.”

Adding that her baby’s needs come first and“I think that’s really what attachment parenting is about: being responsive to the cues of the baby.”

But for many women that subscribe to this style of parenting, the choice really begins during pregnancy and opting for a nat-

Natural child birth ranges from giving birth at home with a midwife or giving birth in a hospital with a midwife present and a birthing plan.

Frede stated that she had a midwife and had it written in her birth plan that she wanted skin-toskin contact with her baby immediately after birth. She also opted to have no drugs during her labor.

“It was un-medicated,”she said, “and it wasn’t bad.”

To alleviate labor pains she used

a birthing ball and soaked in a sauna tub that was very relaxing, she said.

After her baby girl was born, she was put on Frede’s chest with the umbilical cord still attached until the cord stopped pulsing.

“All those nutrients were still going into her,”she explained.

Arsenault also had a hospital birth with a midwife present. She had no pain medications, epidural and no labor induction. She also sat in a tub of warm water and used a birthing ball.

“I had a doula assist me,”she explained.“We did child-birth

classes with her and she knew me and my husband. She acted as our advocate.”

Arsenault said that having a natural birth is the opposite of what is put out by doctors.

“I wanted to do everything naturally during the pregnancy and labor, and that’s how I want to parent,”she said.

However, Stephanie Overstreet of Navarre forewent the hospital and had her son at home because she wanted to experience birth naturally without medical intervention. She readily acknowledges that there are times

Attachment parenting was the natural progression following a natural birth; however, there are still challenges and each mother acknowledged that not all aspects are easy to follow or work for them. One component is cosleeping in which the baby sleeps in a co-sleeper with the mother and father, but for Frede, this just didn’t work for her and her husband.

“She slept in our room in a cosleeper for the first six weeks,”she said,“and none of us were getting sleep.”

Although Frede loves having her baby close to her, she said they are both light sleepers and any movement from either of them meant they were both awake.

“As soon as I put her in her own crib,”she said,“she started sleeping 2-3 hours longer.”

Frede also stressed that it was important for her and her husband Tim to have time together.

“There has to be a balance,”she said,”I believe God made the family unit and the marriage has to be strong in order for you to be good parents.”

But for Overstreet and her family, co-sleeping works,“he’s not a good sleeper so for me to get sleep I have him in bed with us.”

Each mother reiterated that finding a balance is the key.

Madl inks with Webber International University

In front of teammates, friends and family, Shawn Madl signed a letter of intent on May 14 to attend Webber International University in Babson Park. Madl has a 3.5 GPA and plans to major in sports management.The Warriors play in the Sun Confer-

ence and made a postseason appearance in the conference playoffs last season.

The stars aligned for Madl for this opportunity to present itself.

“Coach Crabtree is an alumnus of Webber,”Madl said.“He still has a few contacts there and heard about a tryout in April. I attended the tryout and toured the school. I met the coaches

and was very impressed with their program. I threw well that day and they offered me a scholarship.”

Madl has been playing baseball since he was 6 years old.

After playing baseball and football in Ramstein, Germany, Madl joined the Raiders as a pitcher for the last three years. He uses an 85 mph fastball to set up his

Madl said he’s looking forward to pitching at the college level.

never knew that I held the record at the high school. I don’t even think he knew that I was a state champion at that point. So it was really something that has happened not because I was pushing him into it, it’s just something that kind of happened by the fate of nature.”

By the time Austin reached the seventh grade, Mike told his son,“Well, if you want to get good I can teach you a few things.”

Raider White defeats Black in thriller, 21-14

Rising senior QB Robby Miller found highrising tight end Jordan Leggett for a 50-yard TD to give the White team a 21-7 lead in the third quarter.

There was a football scrimmage at Navarre High School but someone forgot to tell the players. In fact, they thought it was for real.

The lights came on May 18 for the annual Black vs. White game, and what started out as a hohum affair ended in thrilling fashion with the White team holding on for a 21-14 win over the Black squad.

After forcing the White team to turn it over on downs, the Black team took possession of the ball down by seven

with 1:25 remaining in the contest. Moments later, quarterback Gavin Wehby scrambled left out of the pocket and found running back Jay Warren running wide open at the 6 yard line. But the rising senior tailback/free safety turned his head to look up field before catching the ball, and dropped what would have been a walk-in touchdown to tie the game.

“Yeah, if Jay catches that one it’s a score. I wanted them to score,”said Raiders head coach Jay Walls afterward.

One play later, Wehby once again scrambled left and found Jay Benton all by himself near the 10 yard line, but he too dropped what would have given the Black team a new set of downs with 53.1 seconds left.

That missed opportunity turned out to be the last for the Black squad, as Blake Walter picked

off Wehby’s desperation toss down the middle of the field on the next play, sealing the White team’s win.

“I thought it was a little flat at the beginning,”said Walls about the emotion of the game.

“I thought the second half was much better.”

The Black team took its only lead of the game at 7-0 when Warren intercepted Robby Miller’s pass toward the left hash and took it 80 yards for a touchdown.

The second quarter saw the emergence of the White team and QB Matthew Webb, who rushed for two scores within six minutes of each other to give the White squad a 14-7 advantage at the 2:00 mark of the first half.

The fact that neither Miller nor Wehby led their respective teams to an offensive touch-

down until late in the third quarter was an area of frustration for Walls.

“There were still mistakes on offense.

You know, we’ve been working the same plays; we didn’t put anything new in,”he said. “We’ve been working these same plays now going on three weeks, and we ought to be doing better as far as knowing what to do.”

But near the 2:00 mark of the third quarter, Miller hooked up with fellow rising senior Jordan Leggett for a 50-yard acrobatic touchdown in the corner of the end zone to extend the White squad’s

A ‘King’ he is not While it’s swirling in the world of sports, I have to address LeBron James and his deep discomfort for embracing the moment of truth when it counts the most.

Let’s get something straight – No. 6 for the Miami Heat may indeed lead a team to an NBA championship before he takes off his headband for the last time. It could happen in the next few weeks, if he manages to emerge from the ostrich hole he’s currently face down in at the moment, that is.

Heck, even if the Heat turn the series around against Indiana and advance to the Eastern Conference Finals for the second consecutive season, James has already been exposed as an extremely gifted player, and honestly, nothing more.To say playing the forward position in teammate Chris Bosh’s absence was“taxing”must have made Hall of Famer Earvin“Magic” Johnson laugh uncontrollably.

For those of you who need a sports history lesson, as a wideeyed rookie in 1980, Johnson led the Los Angeles Lakers to an NBA title over Philadelphia without having Kareem AbdulJabbar to dish the ball to in the post because of a broken ankle.

How did the magic man do it you say? He played all five positions in the closeout game in Philly – 42 points, 15 rebounds – at the age of 20.

Read the previous sentence once more if you must.

So again, for James to actually complain about having to play out of position in the playoffs was about as ridiculous as it gets, and it certainly didn’t gain him any respect or solicit any pity from the old school.

While James may be a oneman marketing machine who puts butts in the seats of South Beach and a three-time NBA MostValuable Player, how valuable is he really?

He’s not a player’s player if that makes sense. For you athletes out there, past and present, you know exactly what I’m talking about. What’s the one thing a guy has to possess to make a team follow his lead?

What’s the one thing a coach can’t teach? And to spin the words of the Cowardly Lion, “What did the all-time greats have that James doesn’t have?”

No, it’s not courage. It is, however, heart.

When the game is on the line and his teammates need him to put the game away, James can’t, won’t and doesn’t want to do it. When he needs to drive the lane and draw a hard foul to hit the game-winning free throws, he chooses instead to make a great pass to an unsuspecting teammate who was counting on him to take the last shot.

Michael Jordan did that once. He drew the defense then dished to a trailing Steve Kerr, who stopped and popped a 15-footer to secure the fifth championship in franchise history for the Chicago Bulls. But did Michael make a habit of passing first instead of putting the team on his back and living up to the moment of taking the last shot? Again, just that one time. Every other time, he knew and everybody else in the building knew, he was the man.

But James is not the man, and he’s certainly not royalty of any sort. Having been anointed “King James”back in his high school days in Ohio, he’s seemingly been living off a nickname given to him that he never truly earned. I guess getting paid $90 million by Nike before ever taking a shot in the NBA is enough to take anyone’s hunger away in a nanosecond.

Bottom line is this, before he made his guarantee to the world in 2010 that Miami was going to win ring after ring because of his teaming up with Dwyane Wade and Bosh, he should have thought about how“taxing”it was going to be to achieve greatness.

“That’s the history of the whole thing,”said Mike.

When speaking to the Droogsmas it quickly became evident that they share a close connection, which has nothing to do with coaching and everything to do with having fun.

“He’s always been there to support me,”said Austin.“Sometimes it’s hard but he’s at just about every track meet and foot-

ball game. Last year he traveled to every game, he cooked meals for us, he cooked our pregame meals for us the better part of last year, and him being there has kept our relationship very strong. On top of that, he’s been my coach for track, which has led to more time for us to bond and build our relationship.”

Having achieved a school record and state titles in two events within one week of each other, one may assume Austin has focused solely on track and field since he discovered the sport as a middle-schooler. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

By the time Austin graduates in 2013, he will have lettered in four sports: track, football, wrestling and weightlifting.

As if that wasn’t enough, he tried his hand at another sport during his sophomore year.

“Last year in my sophomore year I played five sports; I played football, baseball, basketball, track and I did weightlifting,” said Austin.

When asked if he’s found any time to sleep over the last three years, he replied,“Uh, about four or five hours a night.”

Austin said his choosing to play so many sports was completely arbitrary and never influenced by anyone or anything.

“When I decided to do wrestling I was like,‘Well, I don’t really want to be running up and down a court at 300 pounds so, I’m just gonna go wrestle,’” he said.

To further clarify his son’s

decision to play a wide array of sports, Mike said he never stood over Austin and made him play anything specific.

“I’m not that guy that’s pushing my kid into everything and making him do it,”he said.“This is a self-inflicted pain.”

Now with his focus turned to spring football, and with five Div. I programs (Kentucky, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Clemson and South Florida) pining for his talents, Austin said it’s not a done deal that he’ll follow the path laid out by his dad 30 years earlier in Tallahassee.

“It’s still coming along,”said Austin about his impending decision.“There’s still a lot that needs to be done, a lot of visits left to be taken, a lot of

research that needs to be done but I’ll have an answer soon enough.”

With his intent on setting the school record in shot put, and achieving a second district and regional championship in wrestling before he walks with the class of 2013, Austin said he thinks about his legacy at Gulf Breeze High and how he wants to be referenced by generations to come.

“I just want to be remembered as that kid that everybody looked up to and said,‘Hey, you remember Austin Droogsma?

That kid was a beast,’”he said.

“I’d like to think that when kids who see me (in the years to follow) grow up and they get into high school … that they’ll think back to me.”

Inaugural Raider Games a success

It doesn’t take much to put a smile on a child’s face, especially when he knows that win or lose, he’s loved anyway.

That was the core message of the inaugural Navarre Raider Games held on May 18 at Navarre High School.

Jessica Howie, a veteran ESE teacher at West Navarre Primary, led the charge for the event of which eight schools participated, including: WNP, West Navarre Intermediate, Holley-Navarre Primary, Holley-Navarre Intermediate, Navarre High, Holley-Navarre Middle, Woodlawn Beach Middle and Milton.

“Making sure these kids have friends – that’s the No. 1 thing in my classroom that I tell my parents that I want them to have a home, I want them to feel loved and I want them to have friends. I want them to be accepted,”said Howie while in the process of running from station to station.

Howie said there was a need for students with disabilities in the area to be able to express themselves through physical activity after the Sports Ability Games were scratched due to budget constraints in Santa Rosa County.

“I just personally have a dedication to the special needs kids in the area,”she said with a passionate tone.“I’ve been teaching for nine years and

Her 8-year-old son, Rashaun, wasn’t able to speak during the early part of his life.

“My son was diagnosed as developmentally delayed and language delayed,”said Howie.

“I share my experience with ‘my parents’(of her students) because I know what it was like when my son could not talk. He didn’t start talking until he was 3-and-a-half, and it was hard to communicate.”

But Howie didn’t give up hope that her son could overcome the obstacles put before him. With consistent speech therapy, he was recently dismissed from all services because of what she called “early intervention.”

“Early intervention is a really big thing,”she said.“If you can provide them the services – he doesn’t have to be pulled out (of one class) to go to SLD classes anymore. And he’s making‘As’and‘Bs’on his report card. And then my daughter (Mathaya, 11,) is on the other end; she’s a gifted student.”

Smiling, laughing, happiness and friendship – those were just a few of the images and sounds that manifested themselves during the Navarre Raider Games.

“And I think that’s important,” said Howie.“I love what I do.”

Raiders gain momentum in Week 3 of spring football

The message coming from Jay Walls is clear. The head football coach at Navarre High School has high expectations for the Raiders in his first year, and has since Day 1 of spring practice.

Two weeks later, those expectations remained. However, the biggest difference from then to Week 3 is that the players have bought in to Walls and the culture he’s implemented.

“These kids have had a good offseason, they’ve worked hard.

And I think it’s kind of carried over to spring,”said Walls on May 17 after the Raiders went for a solid two-and-a-half hours at the NHS practice field.

“I think we’ve gotten better, but we’ve still got a lot of work to do. We need to have a great summer.”

Things are good, but they can always get better. That’s the message Walls and his staff are bringing to the locker room, to team meetings

“It’s wide open and they’re both doing good,” he said.

“We’re going to keep working them and see what happens.”

Despite the mentioned shortcomings in execution on both sides of the ball, Walls said after three weeks of practice his squad is on the way up.

“Overall as a team I think the attitude and effort has been good; I think we’ve gotten better,”he said with a slight grin.“I feel good about spring.”

I’m disappointed in the turnovers and penalties but that’s something we can fix,” he said.“I thought our kids played hard and we got a little better since last week. So, that’s all I can ask.”

By Joanna Hammond Navarre Press The saying goes, if you give a man a fish, you will feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you will feed him for a lifetime.

What happens, exactly, when you teach 350 seventh-grade students to fish?

For Pete Della Ratta, dean of students for HolleyNavarre Middle School, teaching children to fish is a passion. He’s been active in pursuing grants that have allowed him to pass along his love of the outdoors to his students.

“The rods and reels and tackle boxes came from Fish Florida, a nonprofit organization,” said Della Ratta, “that supports organizations that teach people, especially children, about Florida’s fish and aquatic habitats through donations of fishing equipment, grants and scholarships.”

Della Ratta said that Dorothy Slye, manager of the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier, also played a huge part in the success of the students fishing program.

“She was instrumental in getting the students as well as the volunteers on the pier for five days between the two middle schools,”said Della Ratta.“She made contact with me by offering to assist with any needs I might have during the fishing field trip as well as helping out with providing adults that helped rig some of the rods and reels.”

“She offered transportation of the equipment from the parking lot to the different stations on the pier which was a huge help because of the amount of equipment involved,”he continued.

Students from HNMS had a great time getting out of the classroom and learning about marine life, conservation and of course, casting their reels out into the open water.

“We learned about sea turtles, sharks, and we touched a bunch of crabs,”said seventh-grade student Autumn Pullum.“But it’s the most fun fishing.”

Dominic Davis brought his dad Cornell out to enjoy the day with him. The pair lives in Navarre on the water and frequently enjoys the natural beauty that the Emerald Coast has to offer.

“We fish all the time, we live by the water,”Dominic said.

Cornell said that he was more than willing to take the day off to spend time with his son and enjoy fishing.

“It’s a perfect, beautiful day,”Cornell said.“I am all about marine conservation.”

Conservation is one of the main reasons Della Ratta runs the fishing clinics.

“Students were able to learn different aspects of conservation such as: what marine debris looks like and what part they can do to stop polluting our waterways,

ethical angling and the rule of‘catch what you want but take what you need.’”

“Teaching students to limit what they take home as well as how to properly release a fish that is under or over-sized back into their environment with minimal stress to the fish,”Della Ratta continued.“Students had the opportunity to learn about the turtles that live here and how the environment affects them, including how the oil spill affected turtles in our area.”

Many volunteers helped Della Ratta make the fishing clinics run smoothly. BK Stoeser, who helps run the Kids Fishing Rodeo for the Pensacola Recreational Fisherman's Association, has been assisting Della Ratta with the clinics for four years because, as he said,“that’s what you are supposed to do.”

“My dad always helped us,”said Stoeser.“At the end of the day, when the chores were done, we went down and fished. Fish was part of

the staple (of our diets) and that stuck with me.”

“I enjoy being around the kids,”he continued.“They help keep you young.”

For Della Ratta, being around children is a passion of his as well. In his day-today job as dean, he helps keeps students motivated at school, and he extends that outside the classroom as well.

“My favorite aspect of the fishing program is giving students and adults alike different options to involve yourself in outdoor activities that can be sustainable with little money and effort while being fun and teaching patience and confidence,” he said.

“Watching students’faces when they catch that first fish or just touch one of the organisms in the touch tank are aspects of the program that make me thankful for everything I have in life and the journey I have had to get me where I am with my family inside as well as outside of the school environment.”

Twins conceived after dad died won't get benefits

By Jesse J. Holland Associated Press The Supreme Court on May 21 ruled that a man's children who were conceived through artificial insemination after his death cannot get Social Security survivor benefits.

Justices unanimously ruled that twins born to Robert Capato's surviving wife Karen did not qualify for survivor benefits because of a requirement that the federal government use state inheritance laws.

The Capato twins, conceived using Robert Capa-

to's frozen sperm, were born 18 months after their father died of esophageal cancer.

Karen Capato's application for survivor benefits on behalf of the twins was rejected by the Social Security Administration, which said Robert Capato needed to be alive during the children's conception to qualify. A federal judge agreed, saying they had to qualify as Capato's children before his death or qualify under state inheritance law as children who could legally inherit.

Capato died a Florida resident, and Florida law expressly bars children conceived

posthumously from inheritance, unless they are named in a will. The only beneficiaries named in Capato's will are his wife, their son and his two children from a previous marriage.

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia overturned that decision, saying the Capato twins were clearly the biological children of Robert Capato and deserved the survivor benefits. But other federal appellate courts have ruled differently in similar cases, leaving the Supreme Court to come to a final conclusion.

"We find the Social Secu-

rity Administration's ruling better attuned to the statute's text and its design to benefit primarily those the deceased wage earner actually supported in his or her lifetime," Ginsburg said. "And even if the agency's longstanding interpretation is not the only reasonable one, it is at least a permissible construction entitled to deference."

The case was heard by the Philadelphia appeals court because Karen Capato unsuccessfully argued that her children should have been considered citizens of New Jersey, which has different inher-

itance laws from Florida. The twins were conceived in Florida, but Karen Capato moved to New Jersey during the pregnancy.

Ginsburg called Robert Capato's death before he and his wife could provide their children with additional siblings "tragic."

But "the law Congress enacted calls for resolution of Karen Capato's application for child's insurance benefits by reference to state intestacy law," she said. "We cannot replace that reference by creating a uniform federal rule that statute's text scarcely supports."

FDA delays sunscreen label changes

By Joanna Hammond Navarre Press The Federal Food and Drug Administration allowed sunscreen manufacturers to delay implementation of new rules that govern labels on sunscreen designed to ease consumer confusion.

The FDA announced in 2011 that sunscreen manufacturers would have one year to comply with new labeling standards and guidelines for the meaning of selected terms commonly found on sunscreen products.

The guidelines the FDA announced require any sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of less than 15 to warn consumers that the product does not protect against skin cancer, sunburns or sun damage that can lead to early signs of aging.

In addition, sunscreens would no longer be able to use

the terms“sun block,”“waterproof” or“sweat proof”because the FDA stated those words were misleading.

Only those sunscreens that meet the FDA's standards for sufficient sun protection factors and protect against both ultraviolet B rays and ultraviolet A rays, can label themselves as "broad spectrum."

Both UVA and UVB rays can be contributing factors in skin cancer.

The new labeling standards were slated to take effect on June 17, but lobbying pressure from the cosmetic, personal care and over-the-counter drug industries has caused the FDA to give the sunscreen manufacturers another six-month extension. Now the new labeling will not be required until Dec. 17 – well beyond the warm weather and swimsuit season.

Manufacturers with annual sales of less than $25,000 have until Dec. 17, 2013.

For Shannon Mills, SPF is an aspect of sunscreen she pays attention to when purchasing sunscreen for her family.

“We use at least 30 SPF, waterproof and sweat proof if we are going to be outside for any considerable amount of time,”Mills said on Facebook.

Dr. Pamela Svendsen, a board certified family practice physician based in Navarre, said that it is important to apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before sun exposure and to reapply often.

“I usually recommend at least 30 to 35 SPF, beyond that you don’t usually get a lot more bang for your buck,”Svendsen said.“And you need to reapply it every couple of hours, more frequently if you are sweating or if you are in and out of the water.”

Svendsen also recommends that patients use enough of the product to get adequate coverage.

“You want to make sure (the sunscreen) evenly covers,”Svendsen said.“Don’t be stingy.”

Bullock named Nurse of the Year Paul Bullock, R.N. has been named the 2012 Baptist Medical Park Nine Mile Nurse of the Year.

Bullock has been in the medical field for 36 years and has worked at the Baptist Medical Park – Nine Mile outpatient surgery center since 2010. Prior to joining the team at Baptist Medical Park, Bullock served in the U.S. Merchant Marine and the U.S. Navy and later worked as an intensive care nurse in New Orleans. He is a graduate of the University of Delaware and Pensacola State College, is a licensed health risk manager and is active in the community as a Boy Scout troop leader.

Many Americans use sunscreens differently. Some apply diligently every day, regardless of the amount of exposure, and some not at all.

Susan Bradshaw of Navarre said that she only uses natural sunscreens and follows the advice of Dr. Joseph Mercola, a popular alternative physician from Illinois.

“If I use sunscreen, I only use natural sunscreen,”said Bradshaw.“The commercial brands are harmful. I only use it if I will be out prolonged periods of time; like say I will put it on after a half an hour at the beach or to protect any white skin showing. I do, however, use natural, free of harmful chemicals, SPF 30 on my face.

I also take Astaxanthin every day.Ten minutes a day is a must with no sunscreen.”

Sarah Pickering said on Facebook that she takes a different approach, as her coloring dictates.

“As the typical redhead, I either have to cover up, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun or apply gobs of sunscreen,” she said. “All I know is as much as I'd like to have a tan like most other people; I know the dangers of getting burned. My mom, a nurse, (who) took care of many people dying of cancer, knows full well.The sun is one of those things; we need it for our health (vitamin D), but only in moderation so we don't age ourselves. Sunscreen comes in many forms, different SPFs and consistencies. Personally I try to check to see how safe the ingredients are as to not be harming myself while trying to protect myself. If I know I'm going to be outside longer on a sunny day, less clothed or during

NAVARRE BEACH Volunteers clean up Opal Beach

By Sandi Kemp Navarre Press Maggi Roberts usually organizes a Navarre Beach Runners and Walkers Meetup in Navarre, but last week she organized her usual runners and walkers to help clean up asphalt and old road bed at Opal Beach between Navarre and Pensacola beaches.

The asphalt and road debris is hidden in the sand and is left over from the Hurricanes Ivan and Dennis in 2004 and 2005, respectively.The beach road, otherwise known as J. Earle Bowden Way, was finally re-opened in 2009.

A plea for volunteers went out to the local media from the Gulf Islands National Seashore from GINS volunteer coordinator Beth Caverno and more than 40 people showed up throughout the allotted time of 9 a.m.–noon, including many people from Navarre and Gulf Islands National Seashore staff.

Superintendent Dan Brown found out that $6 million originally slated for the beach road clean-up had been eliminated from the budget two weeks after he started in 2010.

“We have requested $13 million from BP Funds and that request is still being evaluated,” said Brown.

By Yvonne C. Harper Navarre Press A new touch tank for the Navarre Beach Marine Science Station was made available through a grant from the Navarre Beach Leaseholders and Resident Association.

Charlene Mauro, program director of the Marine Science Station, was presented with a $500 check and a glass cube on May 19 during the leaseholders meeting to be used in the tank.

“I had the opportunity to get a good lead on a converted lobster tank,”said Mauro, “and it’s the biggest hit at the station and now we’ll be able to get another one. It’s awesome.”

After receiving the check, Mauro took the time to present to the leaseholders other upcoming events that the Marine Science Station will be holding and upcoming projects she hopes to see accomplished.

“We have a $400,000 pending grant to build a buoy with PVC pipe that will have a monitoring probe to collect data on the reefs,”she said.

Mauro explained that monitoring the water is something her class has been doing, but this system will be more permanent and educational.

“It will monitor the pH levels, salinity, dissolve oxygen and temperature (of the reefs),” said Mauro.

Mauro also asked for volunteers on June 8-9 for the upcoming World Ocean Day festival that is taking place at

By Yvonne C. Harper Navarre Press If you are caught in a rip current, never attempt to swim back to shore – swim out with the current, then swim parallel with the shore until you are out of the current and can easily swim back to the beach.

Most people, especially visitors, panic and try to swim against the current causing fatigue and possible drowning, according to Buck Lee, Santa Rosa Island Authority executive director.

Mike Howard, fire chief of the Navarre BeachVolunteer Fire Department, reported that nearly 90 percent of the water rescues in 2011 were a result of swimmers being pulled out by rip currents.

Rip currents are created when a sandbar forms near the shoreline, and the waves or current cut a path through the sandbar causing a wash out.

Terry Wallace, Navarre Beach supervisor, explained that a wash out is caused by water pooling between the sandbar and the shoreline rushing out when the break

is formed. This strong current can pull a swimmer out in a matter of seconds.

Wallace recommended swimmers read the signs posted at all public beach assess points describing rip currents and how to respond if caught up in one. He also recommended looking for patterns in the water, swimming in designated swim areas only and paying attention to the surf condition flags.

“At each public access, there is a flag,”he said,“pay close attention to the flags because they change as the surf conditions change.”

A double red flag means the water is closed to the public; one red flag indicated high surf or strong currents; a yellow flag is medium hazard, meaning moderate surf or currents; a green flag indicates calm conditions, but caution should still be exercised.

A purple flag indicates a presence of dangerous marine life.

Both Howard and Wallace had one clear message for swimmers,“swim where the lifeguards are at.”
