Memorial Day recognized in Navarre By Jessi Stone Navarre Press Memorial Day is a day set aside to recognize the men and women who have died while protecting the nation. People in Navarre can help remember those who have given their lives by attending the annual Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. Monday, May 28 at Navarre Park. Ronald Engberg, Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 11367, said the event would probably last for about 45 minutes. The event will feature the Navarre High School JROTC posting of the colors and members will sing the national anthem.

Hurlburt Field announces reduction in force Staff reports Navarre Press Eighteen Hurlburt Field civilian employees will be placed into reduction in force (RIF) status this week, despite extensive voluntary measures and management reassignments over the past few months. In November 2011, the Air Force announced the elimination of 100 positions in base support career fields at Hurlburt Field as a result of a Department of Defense-wide initiative to reduce civilian manpower to fiscal year 2010 levels in order to meet the President Barack Obama’s fiscal year 2012 budget.

State approves Opticom system By Joanna Hammond Navarre Press The Florida Department of Transportation has approved funds needed to install parts of the Opticom system to control traffic lights for emergency vehicles on U.S. Highway 98 and State Road 87 in Santa Rosa County. “We have $187,000 for installation of the system with DOT in our resurfacing program,” said Ian Satter, public information officer for FDOT District 3.“Our number

Chamber committee holds candidate forum By Yvonne C. Harper Navarre Press Candidates for local, state and federal offices have been invited to attend a candidate forum from July 23-24, which will be organized by the Navarre Beach Area Chamber of Com-

merce Government Affairs Committee. Ralph Agnew, the government affairs committee chairman, reviewed how the forum would be structured and how questions would be determined during the May 15 GAC meeting. The first day of the forum

will involve candidates for clerk of court, school board, superintendent of schools, supervisor of elections and sheriff speaking and answering questions. The second day candidates for state representative, U.S. representative, county commissioner and

County requests U.S. 98 sidewalks By Jessi Stone Navarre Press Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners plan to ask the Florida Department of Transportation to construct sidewalks along U.S. Highway 98 to improve pedestrian safety. Commissioner Lane Lynchard told commissioners during a May 21 meeting that a bicyclist had been hit by a vehicle on May 19 at College Parkway and U.S. 98. With the recent history of pedestrian deaths along U.S. 98 in Gulf Breeze and Navarre, Lynchard recommended asking FDOT for more sidewalks from Walmart in Gulf Breeze west to Naval Live Oaks.

Sheriff Hall running for last term Challengers seek sheriff’s seat By Jessi Stone Navarre Press

Sheriff Wendell Hall is running for one last term as sheriff of Santa Rosa County before Hall retiring. If elected, Hall would be serving his fourth term as sheriff, making him the only fourth-term sheriff in Santa Rosa County. “I’m not a career politician,” Hall said.“I’ve been in law enforcement since 1981 as a corrections officer and later as a law enforcement officer.” Originally from Atmore, Ala., Hall graduated from Troy State

University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He and his wife Karen now reside in Pace. He worked as a corrections officer, patrol deputy and a narcotics investigator for Escambia County Sheriff’s Office before being elected as sheriff of Santa Rosa County in 2000. Hall said his long-term goal has always been to ensure that Santa Rosa County maintains its quality of life by keeping crime to a minimum. “Santa Rosa County is one of the best counties to live and raise your kids in comparison to some of our neighboring counties,”he
