Flood mitigation priorities to be reassessed By Jamie Gentry jamie@navarrepress.com When grant money is available for mitigating flood risks in the county, there is a project priority list ready and waiting, but projects to improve persistent flooding in Holley by the Sea (HBTS) are few on the list. Santa Rosa County’s Local Mitigation Strategy board (LMS) meets once a quarter to prioritize these projects, discuss mitigation issues and look at funding choices. The LMS will pass along recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners for the final decision. See Flood 9A

Staff Report news@navarrepress.com Margaret Thatcher, infamous “Iron Lady” and first female prime minister for Britain, inadvertently launched the pseudo-holiday now celebrated by Star Wars fans the world over. “May the fourth be with you” is a clever spin on the Star Wars movie motto “may the Force be with you” and the date May 4. While it is unclear where the history of the phrase lies, the first known appearance in print was in celebration of Thatch-

er’s prime minister victory, two years after the first film took the world by storm (or storm troopers) and just months before the second film would grace the big screen According to StarWars.com, author Alan Arnold described the birth of the phrase while he was chronicling the making of “The Empire Strikes Back” for Lucasfilm: “Margaret Thatcher has won the election and become Britain’s first woman prime minister. To celebrate their victory her party took a half page of advertising space in the London Evening News. This mes-

sage, referring to the day of victory, was ‘May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations,’ further proof of the extent to which Star Wars has influenced us all.” The phrase stuck, and as social media became a place for public conversation, the phrase morphed into a common greeting. Meme, or picture messages commonly circulated on the web, featured the phrase in that iconic bold movie title font. While the Iron Lady launched the phrase, the party did not get started until 2011 according to May4StarWarsday.com. Though not confirmed, the Toronto See Star Wars 8A

Push for charter school growth puts district funding in jeopardy By Jamie Gentry jamie@navarrepress.com State dollars dedicated to helping Florida’s highest poverty schools achieve academic success could have to stretch a little farther thanks to legislation passed by the Florida House of Representatives last week. The new legislation, HB 7101, would require the district to allocate a larger percentage of Title I dollars directly to a larger number of schools by lowering

the level of poverty in a school required to be eligible. Title I funds are designated to benefit students in poverty who have low academic performance that have the potential to be successful with intervention. In a statement of response to HB 7101, Santa Rosa School District condemned the legislation. “HB 7101 has serious implications for Title I funding to the most impoverished schools throughout Florida and eliminates the ability of school dis-

tricts to make decisions regarding their Title I funding,” the statement reads. HB 7101 would also favor charter schools for funding, something House Speaker Richard Corcoran, (R) Land O’ Lakes, has been pushing. He has already successfully passed HB 5105 which would offer monetary incentives for charter schools to come to the state in the hopes of adding innovative options for students. See TITLE I 8A
