Zion, a 3-month-old lion cub, will hopefully be the beginning of a new pride at Gulf Breeze Zoo. Zion arrived at his new home about a month ago from a zoo in Arkansas. He currently weighs about 17 pounds and can be seen in the zoo nursery for his bottle feedings at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily. Just like a 3-month-old baby, Zion is vocal around feeding time.

Zoo Director Kayte Wanko said the zoo’s goal was to re-establish a lion pride at the zoo. The zoo had a pride of lions before the new owners acquired the zoo, but they since have died. Larry the lion was the very first male lion at the zoo and Zion’s zookeeper Megan Heidenreich remembers working with the two female lions Kit and Kat. Wanko said the three lions all lived well into their 20s, which is about average for lions within managed care.

Deputy tax collector face more charges Yvonne C. Harper Navarre Press Edward Collinsworth, Santa Rosa County chief deputy tax collector, is now facing 15 charges of sexual battery against Collinsworth a child under the age of 12.

Collinsworth, 45, of Pace was charged on Oct. 10 with sexual battery on two victims under the age of 12.The alleged sexual battery occurred from 1979-1986. The victims stated that the battery began when they were 5 or 6 and continued until they were about 12.

Abandoned animals found dead

D a v i d Grubbs, 24, of Navarre was arrested Nov. 2 for felony bat- Grubbs tery after allegedly assaulting his boyfriend on East Bay Boulevard and Blackjack Circle in Navarre.

Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the altercation around 1 p.m. Nov. 2. A 19-year-old male told officers that a verbal argument occurred between him and his boyfriend and escalated into a fist fight. The alleged victim stated the fight began at his boyfriend’s home on Blackjack Circle.

The smell of death permeated the foreclosed home located in the 1600 block of Winding Shore Drive in Lighthouse Point subdivision on Nov. 6 when six animals were found dead.

Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeannie Schmitt was performing a follow-up call after 8 a.m. on Nov. 6 to several complaints of animal cruelty at the home. There was no one home when she arrived and she walked around to the back of the home.

he Florida Democratic Party got what it needed late last week, by not getting what it wanted.

State chairman Rod Smith asked Republican Gov. Rick Scott to extend the eight-day early voting period through Sunday because voters were having to wait in extremely long lines at polling places.

A political pro, Smith knew that was like the Detroit Tigers asking the San Francisco Giants to make the World Series best out of nine, rather than seven games.

Why would Scott want to extend a voting method that favors Democrats? He and the Republicans who run the Legislature specifically excluded the Sunday before Election Day when they overhauled the election code last year. Acceding to Smith's request would have given back what the Democrats lost in the Legislature.

Scott knew he would be accused of "suppressing the vote" by not changing the rules in the bottom of the eighth inning, just because the other team felt it was needed.

You don't have to be overly cynical to suspect that Democrats made their request just so they could remind us how sinister Republicans are, ever eager to make it hard for minority, elderly and college-aged Floridians to vote.

And it's true that Republicans have lacked subtlety in rigging the rules, as the Democrats did for about 126 years -- and will again, when they run the Florida Capitol someday.

Under the guise of combatting vote fraud, which isn't really that big a problem, Scott ran a ham-fisted purge of voting rolls, supposedly rooting out felons and non-citizens.

Eliminating Sunday voting deprived black churches of their "Souls to the Polls" after-church tradition, which always favors the Democrats.

But Florida has 11.9 million registered voters, of whom 4,421,453 voted by mailed ballot -- what we used to call "absentee" -- or in person during early voting. That's only about 91,000 fewer total ballots than were collected before Election Day in 2008, when there were 13 days of early voting.

It should be noted that both presidential election

years had 96 hours of early voting. They were just crammed into eight days this year.

Aside from their hunch that this sounds like the sort of thing the GOP would do, the Democrats' claim of voter suppression relates to trends in early and mailed balloting. The Democrats always do better at early voting, while Republicans romp in mailed ballots.

It was no different this year, as 1,108,882 Democrats and 861,952 Republicans had voted in person at early polling places, through the weekend. But so did 439,901 "other" voters, mainly the "No Party Affiliates."

So, by refusing to extend early voting into Sunday, Scott "suppressed" the votes of millions of independents and minor-party members, as well those of maybe 2.5 million Republicans who hadn't voted yet. Assuming most of those folks would have gone for Romney, if they voted at all, Scott was excluding guys on his team.

Ex-Gov. Charlie Crist, who extended early voting hours in 2008, denounced Scott's refusal to do so this time. Crist, nominally an independent, has endorsed President Obama for re-election.

Never mind that we've known the new voting rules for 17 months, since Scott signed the new law. Never mind that voters have had more than a month to get mailed ballots, or that they still could go to supervisors' offices on election eve and cast "live" absentee ballots.

Never mind that clueless voters contributed to the long lines because they knew so little about the issues on the exceptionally large ballot. Never mind that 37 percent of us managed, somehow, to fight our way through all this suppression and get votes in to the elections supervisors' offices by Sunday, Nov. 4 Scott stood by the law, as he and Republican legislators wrote it. Smith played to Democrats' not-whollygroundless belief that the GOP is always up to something.

Imagine that -- politicians doing political things in an election year.

Somebody call the Guinness Book of Records.

A private foundation. Private foundations are charitable entities created by an individual or family. They are private because they do not solicit contributions from the public.

There are two general types of family foundations: operating and non-operating. Operating foundations carry on specific charitable work (e.g., the Jones Home for Battered Children). Most people select non-operating foundations which make cash grants to individuals and organizations as the means of carrying out its charitable purpose.

Private foundations can have profound estate and income tax benefits and therefore have become useful tools within more elaborate financial plans. However, the primary motivation of those establishing a private foundation is to achieve some charitable purpose. The use of a private foundation allows a family to create a legacy of giving that could last into perpetuity. A private foundation can help create a tradition of giving and public service among many generations of a family. The founder can also set the tone and direction for the foundation through the instrument that creates it.

Private foundations may be organized either as trusts or corporations, although the corporate form is currently the more popular. They are run by a board of trustees (trusts) or a board of directors (corporations). They must exist for a specific charitable purpose. That purpose, incorporated into the documents that create the foundation, must be dedicated to religious, scientific, literary, educational or charitable purposes. The founder may be very explicit or very general in stating the purpose of the foundation.

Contributions to private foundations are deductible for federal income tax purposes. Cash contributions are limited to 30 percent of adjusted gross income (AGI).

Gifts of appreciated assets to private foundations are limited to the donor's cost basis (tax treatment has varied on this issue) and 20 percent of adjusted gross income. Any contribution in excess of the AGI limits may be carried over and used for five years.

A variety of special excise taxes apply to private foundations. First, to avoid one excise tax, the foundation must make grants of at least 5 percent of average assets each year. They must also pay a 1 percent to 2 percent excise tax on investment income. They are prohibited from self-dealing (e.g., transactions with donors and board members, etc.) except under limited circumstances. Foundations may not own a 20 percent or more interest in a business.

Grants for certain purposes (political, scholarship, and others) are restricted or prohibited. Expenditures for non-charitable purposes (i.e. operating expenses) must be within guidelines. Finally, the foundation must file an annual tax return. While private foundations can provide many benefits, the area is also fraught with potential complexity.

Financial and estate planning involve more than mere tax considerations. Consulting with a Certified Financial Planner, an attorney and tax professional is desirable for those wanting to incorporate charitable giving into their financial plans.

Public weighs in on regional economic strategy

By Yvonne C. Harper Navarre Press Chabin Concepts, Inc. sought public input on Oct. 24 during an economic public forum on how best to develop a long-term strategy for economic development for the Santa Rosa and Escambia counties area.

Two public input meetings were held, one on Oct. 23 in Pensacola and the second on Oct. 24 in Milton.

About 20 people attended the meeting in Milton, including County Administrator Hunter Walker and County Commissioner Bob Cole.

Thomas Ticknor of Ticknor and Associates and Allison Larson of Chabin facilitated the economic development public input forum.

Chabin was awarded a $120,000 contract on Aug. 7 by the Pensacola Bay Area Chamber of Commerce to develop a strategic economic development plan for the region.

Jim Hizer, the Pensacola Chamber CEO/president, told the attendees that public input was an important part of the process.

“The great things I’ve discovered about Northwest Florida is there are smart people with great ideas… (we need to) get them all into the hopper to sort out a development plan we can all get behind,”Hizer said.

Larson said Chabin’s role is to be the medium that pulls the ideas together.

Ticknor also asked about the RESTORE Act funds that could result in Santa Rosa County receiving millions of dollars as a result of the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill in 2010. Ticknor told the attendees that his worst fear was that the counties would suddenly get this windfall and spend the money on recurring projects but then wouldn’t have the funds in the future to sustain the projects.

Ferd Salomon, a former board member for TEAM Santa Rosa, suggested the funds could be used to fill gaps in education, although the consensus among the attendees was to use the funds for one-time projects and to put a portion of the money in a trust fund for future use.

Ticknor closed the meeting by asking the attendees to write down their recommendations so that he and Larson could take them into consideration when developing the long-term economic strategy. Larson stressed that in order for any strategy to work, there had to be commitment from local government leaders and staff, chamber members and residents.

“You all have to commit to this or else you’re wasting your time,”said Larson.

Chabin will present its strategy to the Pensacola Chamber in January.

Sassano has 31 years of experience in economic development in Florida, including 13 years with the state as a supervisor for the Bureau of Industry Development. He also owned men’s clothing stores with his brothers in Ohio and Florida.

Sassano said Florida’s Great Northwest, whose members include educational institutions, private businesses and economic development organizations across the Panhandle, has recently undergone several changes because of grant programs ending and private sector donations lagging in a recessionary economy.

Over the last several years Florida’s Great Northwest has administered two federal grants totaling more than $16 mil-

lion which has gone to area businesses, workforce boards and to fund economic development recruitment efforts.

“The grants were of great benefit to the region, but they have ended,” Sassano said.

“And even though it has been difficult for the private business sector to make up the difference, the changes we are making will not make us less effective – only more efficient.”

Hutchinson said the organization will spend $200,000 in 2013 in marketing Northwest Florida to targeted prospects – particularly in the aerospace industry. He noted that all of the marketing programs will be coordinated by the local chambers and economic development organizations in the area.

“We will focus our efforts

and resources on bottom line economic development rather than on overhead and organizational costs,”Hutchinson said. “We will be lean and keen.”

Other changes being made include staff reductions from five people to two and moving the organization from its present location in Sandestin to the Northwest Florida State College campus in Niceville.

FGNW hopes to increase private contributions going forward.

“We hope businesses realize that making an investment in Florida’s Great Northwest, is making an investment in the future of the region and the future of their enterprise,” Sassano said.

Sassano is replacing former President Don Kirkman.

Windfelder named NHS teacher of the year

By Jessi Stone Navarre Press Kacie Windfelder moved from North Dakota to teach in Navarre on a whim.

Now in her seventh year of teaching English, she has been chosen as the Teacher of theYear for Navarre High School.

“When Principal (Brian) Noack came into my class holding flowers… I thought ‘no way,’”Windfelder said about her recent award.“I was pleasantly surprised because I was up against some awesome teachers.”

Noack said being chosen for Teacher of the Year was a great honor because it came from the teacher’s peers. He added that there was nothing about Windfelder’s teaching performance that was short of excellence.

“There’s no doubt that she is very committed to her profession and most importantly to her students,”he said.“She has an outstanding rapport with her students and is genuinely concerned about meeting the needs of all her students.”

Windfelder graduated from Mayville State University in North Dakota in the fall of 2005 and couldn’t find a permanent teaching position in the middle of the year. She was doing a long-term substituting job at a small elementary school

in North Dakota when she got a call from former NHS principal Bill Emerson thousands of miles away.

The connection from across the country was NHS basketball coach David Noles. Noles coached at Mayville State University and his youngest daughter Kelli was close friends with Windfelder and her twin sister Rammie.

“I’ve known her from when she was a little bitty thing,”Noles said.“She and her twin sister and my daughter were three peas in a pod.”

Windfelder said she was a little hesitant to pack up and move.

“I didn’t want to move because my family was there and I grew up on a farm, but Emerson called me and offered me a job and I randomly decided to move to Navarre,”she said.

But the“random”occurrence seemed to pay off.

Shortly after moving to Navarre, Windfelder met her husband Charles who is in the military, and the couple is expecting their first child in April 2013.

She taught at NHS for two years before she and her husband were transferred to Melbourne where she taught for two years. Windfelder said she was thrilled when they were transferred back to the area and she was able to get her job back at

NHS. She has been teaching freshmen English since she returned.

“I love the big school atmosphere because I grew up in small school atmosphere,”she said about her experience at NHS.“And I love the people I work with. I’ve become close friends with all of them.”

While her original intent was to teach elementary or middle school math, Windfelder said she found her niche in teaching English. One of her favorite lessons has to do with satirical writing, including Jonathan Swift’s essay “A Modest Proposal”because students always remember it.

“I would describe my teaching style as fun but strict,”she said.“I think my students would say I have high expectations and I hold them accountable for everything; academics and behavior.”

She also had the opportunity to coach alongside Noles for a couple of year as an assistant coach for the boys’ basketball team. She has spent the last two years coaching the junior varsity girls’ team and is assisting the varsity girls’ team this year.

“She does a great job as a coach and takes both responsibilities very seri-

“She relates well to the kids, but she does demand respect,”Noles said.“She knows when they need to be disciplined and when they need to be padded on the back.”

Windfelder and her sister were recruited to play basketball at their hometown college but decided not to pursue the sport. While she misses her family back home on the farm, she said she visits twice a year and her family enjoys time at the beach when they visit.

“I love living on the beach.

I’m an outdoor person and love the sun,”she said.

Windfelder is currently working on her master’s degree in education leadership through the American College of Education with aspirations of becoming a principal someday.

Darlene Brock, NHS English Department chairwoman and a former teacher of the year recipient, said NHS was lucky to have Windfelder.

“She is totally invested in her students, knows her subject thoroughly, and exhibits a level of professionalism recognized and appreciated by everyone,”Brock said.

“She is strong, effective, highly organized, and ambitious; yet, she is kind, patient, sincere, and grounded.”

Safety highlighted at Holley-Navarre Middle School

By Yvonne C. Harper Navarre Press Students who bike or walk to Holley-Navarre Middle School will receive reflector vests and bicycle reflector lights thanks to the Community Traffic Safety Team for Escambia and Santa Rosa counties and Cindy Sarver, Santa Rosa County crime prevention specialist.

The safety team visited Holley-Navarre Middle School on Nov. 1 to bring awareness to safety issues involving students that walk or bicycle to school.

Jensen said that he likes to bike to school because it was easier than riding the bus. It also allows him to get home sooner.

“I’m the first to get picked up and last to be dropped off,” said Jensen. The bus ride for him would be about 45 minutes, whereas it takes only about 15 minutes to bike to school.

to increase sidewalks for students that bike or walk and to procure bike racks to allow for more students to bike said Margaret Cunningham, team member.

“Our concern is safety. We make sure if there is a need for safety lights or sidewalks, we work toward getting those things installed,”said Cunningham.

The safety team has been successful on some fronts.

Tommy Brown, safety team chairman, said that as a result of approved grants, sidewalks were put in on Oriole Beach Road in Gulf Breeze and in Pensacola.

“We just had a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a one-mile sidewalk on Airway Drive,” said Brown.

Brown applies for the Safe Route to School grants that provide funds for safety features such as sidewalks and safety lights. He said the process from application to approval takes about one year.

Robert Trigg, HNMS assistant principal, said that something his school is sorely in need of is more bike racks.

The one bike rack the school has was installed when the school was built in 1989. He thinks that if there were more bike racks, more students would bike to school.

“If we could get another, we would see a huge increase (in bikers),”said Trigg. He would also like to see plans

“We need something off (U.S.) 98,”said Trigg.“Families got to have a means to get them (students) here.”

Pete Della Ratta, HNMS dean of students, said that at least 20 students bike to school and often the students will lock their bikes onto other bikes because the bike rack is full. He said there were about 50 walkers and bikers combined.

Rhonda Grice, Florida Alabama Transportation Planning Organization public involvement coordinator, wanted the public to know that the TPO is involved with anything that deals with the planning process of transportation.

Mike Loera of Navarre wants you to ask him about his mustache.

Loera, 28, is clean shaven 11 months out of the year, but this November he will be sporting new facial hair in hopes of sparking a conversation about men’s health.

“I’m in sales, so I’m always out and about talking to people,”he said.“I thought having a mustache growing out a couple weeks into November could lead to a conversation about what I’m doing and what the awareness campaign involves.”

Loera is one of many people around the world participating in Movember, a month-long campaign that encourages men to grow a mustache during November to raise awareness about prostate and testicular cancer.

“I haven’t personally been affected by cancer,”Loera said, “but the whole cause of growing awareness in men’s health issues like prostate cancer struck me as something important.”

The Movember Foundation, the Australian based nonprofit behind the campaign, began in 2004 and is active in raising funds worldwide for various men’s health causes. By Marilynn Marchione AP Chief Medical Writer In a study, stem cells donated by strangers proved as safe and effective as patients' own cells for helping restore heart tissue.

The work involved just 30 patients in Miami and Baltimore, but it proves the concept that anyone's cells can be used to treat such cases. Doctors are excited because this suggests that stem cells could be banked for off-theshelf use after heart attacks, just as blood is kept on hand now.

The study used a specific type of stem cells from bone marrow that researchers believed would not be rejected by recipients. Unlike

other cells, these lack a key feature on their surface that makes the immune system see them as foreign tissue and attack them, explained the study's leader, Dr. Joshua Hare of the University of Miami.

The patients in the study had suffered heart attacks years earlier. All had developed heart failure because the scar tissue from the heart attack had weakened their hearts so much that they grew large and flabby, unable to pump blood effectively.

Researchers advertised for people to supply marrow, which is removed using a needle into a hip bone. The cells were taken from the marrow and amplified

for about a month in a lab at Baltimore's Johns Hopkins University, then returned to Miami to be used for treatment.

The cells were delivered through a tube pushed through a groin artery into the heart near the scarred area. Fifteen patients were given cells from their own marrow and 15 others, cells from strangers. About a year later, scar tissue had been reduced by about one-third. Both groups had improvements in how far they could walk and in quality of life.

The big attraction is being able to use cells supplied by others, with no blood or tissue matching needed.

"You could have the cells

ready to go in the blood bank so when the patient comes in for a therapy, there's no delay," Hare said.

Dr. Elliott Antman of Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston praised the work.

"That opens up an entire new avenue for stem cell therapy, like a sophisticated version of a blood bank," he said.

Juan Lopez received his own cells in the study, and said it improved his symptoms so much that at age 70, he was able to return to his job as an engineer and sales manager for a roofing manufacturer and ride an exercise bike.

Hunter’s gone fishin’

INCIDENT REPORTS Sept. 14 An officer responded to Flagler Drive in reference to a family disturbance. On arrival the officer made contact with a white male and female.

When the officer advised they were there to investigate a family disturbance, the male advised that the female had banged the wall with their stroller. He said he had gone over to her and grabbed the stroller to stop her from banging the wall with it again.The female advised the officer that she had hit the wall with the stroller by accident and that the male had pushed her during the altercation. Neither had any visible signs of injury and there were no witnesses present during the altercation. The officer noted that both were calm and that the male was“going out for the night.”There was no evidence

to support a battery complaint.

And the officer confirmed that and there were no domestic violence orders in place before leaving the residence.

Sept. 16 An officer responded to Chablis Circle in reference to a verbal disturbance.The officer made contact with a white female who advised the officer that she had gotten into an argument with her boyfriend. She advised the officer that she wanted him to leave the residence. The boyfriend has custody of their son and has resided at the residence for two months.

When the officer asked the complainant why she wanted her boyfriend to leave, she said he was upset about injunction papers she was attempting to file against him.

The officer then spoke with

the boyfriend who stated that the female was upset at him as he was moving out with their son. He also said that she had scratched his neck and pushed an ink pen into his under chin. The complainant denied scratching or touching her boyfriend. The officer could find no marks or visible bruising on the boyfriend to support his claim.

After confirming that there were no active wants/warrants or Domestic Violence Injunctions on either party and without evidence of an assault no further action was taken.

Sept. 19 While working at Navarre High School, an officer was advised that a 2009 Club Car (motorized golf cart type vehicle) was stolen from the storage area located beneath the press box. The cart was valued at about $7,000. She advised the officer that the cart was returned and secured after use. The officer did not find any signs of forced entry or physical evidence when checking the press-box area.

Due to the timeframe between when the cart was stolen and when it was reported it was not possible to process the area and door handles for latent fingerprints. The officer described the Club Car as maroon with a Navarre Raider logo sticker and Andrews Institute sticker on the front.

Oct. 2 An officer was injured while responding to Eagle Nest Drive in reference to a suicide threat. The officer reported that he spoke to the suicidal subject in the roadway. He reported that the male subject was obviously under the influence of a narcotic because his speech was slurred and he was very sluggish. He was unsteady on his feet and told the officer he took several Xanax within the last hour.

The officer tried to get the subject to sit down on the push bumper of the patrol car. The subject leaned forward and started falling toward the pavement. The officer put his left hand against the subject’s shoulder in an attempt to stop the fall. The officer reported that he felt a sharp pain in his left elbow and noticed swelling after he had placed the subject on the push bumper of the car. A job incident report was completed and he went to the emergency room for evaluation.The subject was transported to the hospital and an involuntary Baker Act was initiated.

Oct. 3 A complainant came into the District 2 office to file a vehicle burglary report. She said she worked at the Sail

Inn in Gulf Breeze as a waitress. She said she put her tip money in a change purse and left it in her vehicle some time the week before. She left her car unlocked in her driveway and found her money was stolen the following day. She said she left her purse in her unlocked car the night before and someone stole her money again. She told officers she had about $70 in the change purse. A blank check and her debit card were also taken but she cancelled her accounts.

The officer told the complainant to lock her doors in the future and keep valuable items out of plain view.

Oct. 4 An officer responded to Walmart in Navarre in reference to a retail theft complaint.

An assets protection employee had the theft suspect in custody in the break room.

The employee stated she saw the suspect enter the store, pick up a pack of cookies and a milk, and go to the break room without attempting to pay for it. The suspect consumed the milk on his way to the break room and consumed the cookies while in the break room. The suspect then clocked in and began his shift. The suspect admitted to taking the items because he was having money problems.

He said he knew it was wrong and said he was sorry. He admitted to previous thefts as well at the same location.

She said her Dolce Gabana purse was worth $250 and her doors were locked. The damage to the window was about $400. The officer dusted for fingerprints with negative results.

Oct. 8 An officer noticed some graffiti on the east side of the field house while patrolling Navarre High School. The officer observed someone had used black spray paint to write,“Freedom is what we ask”on the brick exterior. Someone had used orange spray paint to draw a fivepoint star. On the backside of the same building, another message,“F*** u know tat u are wrong”was drawn with black spray paint along with other vulgar messages. The officer reported that the graffiti didn’t appear to be consistent with gang-related graffiti. The officer didn’t find any evidence near the scene. The officer later notified the school resource officer for a followup investigation.

Bus driver arrested for sexual offenses against minor Staff reports Navarre Press A Milton man was arrested on Nov. 2 in Pardue Escambia County after a warrant was issued by the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office.

Lee Calvin Pardue, 43, is currently in the Escambia County Jail. According to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office, the arrest was a result of a warrant that was filed relating to offenses that occurred between August 2011 and May 2012. The investigation began after the Sheriff’s Office was contacted by the Department of Children and Families, stating that there were allegations of sexual activity between Pardue and a minor.

Pardue was a school bus driver during the 2011-12 school year, according to a press release.“While working in that capacity, Pardue was making flirtatious comments toward a minor, and made comments about their body,”the release stated.“Pardue began to communicate with the minor through text messages and on Facebook.

Nude photographs were exchanged during this communication. The conversations became more sexual in nature, and Pardue ended up meeting the minor on three separate occasions.”

On these occasions, Pardue provided the minor alcohol and sexually molested the minor. Pardue was charged and arrested for use of a computer to solicit a child and lewd/lascivious behavior. Pardue’s bond was set at $260,000 by a judge and Pardue is currently being held in Escambia County until he can be transferred to Santa Rosa County.

Anyone with any further information concerning possible illegal activity committed by Pardue is asked to contact the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office at 983- 1100 or Santa Rosa Crime Stoppers at 437STOP (7867).

Freight truck injures Navarre man Staff reports Navarre Press Michael Estes, 57, of Navarre was seriously injured on Nov. 4 after a freight truck hit his vehicle on Interstate 10.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Jimmy L. Green, 45, of Middleburg, was driving a freight truck westbound on I-10 at the 19 mile marker in the outside lane.

Estes was parked on the outside shoulder because his 1997 Chevy pickup truck had broken down.

While Estes was inside his truck calling for a tow truck, Green’s freight truck failed to drive in the single travel lane and traveled into the emergency lane.

FHP reported that Green tried to brake, but the front right of his truck collided with Estes’ trailer that was carrying a horse. Green’s truck continued to travel and collided with the concrete wall on the north shoulder.

Estes’horse briefly roamed along the interstate, according to FHP, but it was caught shortly after the accident.

Estes was transported to Gulf Breeze Hospital for serious injuries.

Green was not injured and was charged with failure to drive in a single travel lane.

EC-130Js evacuate to Hurlburt Field

By Airman 1st Class Benjamin D. Kim 1st Special Operations Wing Public Affairs Five EC-130Js Commando Solo aircraft and 30 crew members from the 193rd Special Operations Wing at Harrisburg Air National Guard Base, Pa., evacuated to Hurlburt Field, Fla., Oct. 28 in preparation for Hurricane Sandy.

The personnel and aircraft evacuated as a precautionary measure to avoid the fallout of the hurricane with the added danger of flooding from a river adjacent to the base. “[We] evacuated because of Hurricane Sandy—the combination of the storm and the potential for high winds, high cross-winds and the potential for flooding,” said Lt. Col. Mark Stegar, EC-130J pilot of 193rd Special Operations Wing.

“Our base runs right along a river, so we’ve had flooding in the past and we wanted to get the planes out to protect our assets.”

The five planes were originally set to take off over a two-day stretch, but the advancement of the storm required an earlier departure.

While the fun part of the job is playing and cuddling with Zion, Heidenreich and Wanko said raising a lion cub was hard work.

Without other lions to learn from at the moment, Heidenreich has to feed, clean up after and discipline the

broadcast platform. One example of its use is during the earthquakes in Haiti, where the aircraft provided stability in a chaotic time by boosting the infrastructure to deliver fast and efficient aid and relief.

“We went down and supported [Haiti] by broadcasting messages to locals new cub to prepare him for life. It is a full-time job in and of its self, not to mention all the other animals that need to be cared for at the zoo.

Zion may seem small now, but one day he could reach up to 350 pounds so it is important for the zookeepers to teach him early not to behave himself.

“His jaw pressure alone is enough to do damage without teeth,”Wanko said.

During a three-day stretch, the last of the personnel and aircraft returned home Nov. 2.

But for now, the staff is enjoying having another baby for visitors to ooh and ah over.

“He’s always discovering new things. We’re encouraging a little bit of climbing and hunting,”Heidenreich said.

“We manufactured a cat toy out of bamboo pieces and he loves that.”

By hunting, Heidenreich was referring to Zion playfully chasing the chickens

around the zoo, but he has yet to catch one. The cub is growing faster than the zookeepers expected and meat will be added to his diet soon.

“But we’ll be giving him a bottle as long as he will take it,”Wanko said.

The zoo will prepare a large exhibit area for Zion by the time he is 8 months old and Wanko hopes to have female lions early next year.

“Just as we were about to execute the search warrant, the owner arrived and told us we could go in,” said Brinkerhoff. He added that he had called Toni Phelps, the homeowner, to ask her about the animals and she told him, “I haven’t lived in that house for six months. I got all my animals.”

Phelps gave a brief statement saying that“I walked away from that house when I was told it was foreclosed on. I went out the garage door and closed the door.”Phelps would not provide any further information about the animals in the house other than to say she had her animals.

Many empty dog and cat food bags were strewn throughout the house and filled the sinks and bathtub.

Dog and cat feces blanketed the floor throughout the house.The furniture was heavily soiled and torn to pieces.

Phelps was not arrested at the time and no charges had been filed on Nov. 6 by press time. The investigation is ongoing.

Carolyn Harris, a neighbor who lives across the street, reported that the house next to the foreclosed home was owned by“Mrs. Brumgart.”

She said Brumgart bought the house next door for her son and daughter-in-law, the Phelps.

“Maybe four years ago, the

son left and the daughter-inlaw stayed there… she got a roommate,”said Harris.

She said that the Phelps had a German shepherd and Brumgart had a smaller dog.

When Brumgart fell ill, Phelps cared for her, according to Harris.

Harris added that she has-

n’t seen Brumgart in a few months and that she was surprised to hear that six animals were found dead in the home.

“I would see a woman come late at night that wasn’t Toni. She would stay for a little while and then leave,” said Harris.

The NYSA board met briefly after the runoff election votes were counted to select officers. Dixon, the board’s president, closed the meeting to the public because, he said, “that’s what it says in the bylaws.”

The bylaws posted at the NYSA’s website, www.nysasports.com, does not address whether the election of board officers should be closed. When the meeting was re-opened, Dixon announced the 2011-12 officers – himself as president, Nicely as vice president, Pinard as treasurer and Bradley as secretary – were re-elected to the same positions.

Some NYSA members have questioned the board’s

election process, financial integrity and accountability to its members and the county, which owns the property and facilities used

by NYSA to operate its recreational programs.

During the Oct. 17 election, there were questions raised about the ballot’s wording and one candidate’s name, Paul Brown, was missing from the ballot although he was one of the first to submit his name, according to Dixon.

A request was made by Navarre Press to review the ballots, but Dixon stated the ballots were shredded an hour after the Oct. 17 election.

Moyer said he shredded the ballots because no one contested the ballots with-

in that hour. Ann Bodenstein, county elections supervisor, was present during the first election as an observer. Moyer asked Bodenstein how long the ballots should be kept and she told him they should be kept for a time in case there anyone challenged the results. She did not state how long the ballots should be kept, but in a follow-up interview, she was surprised to learn the ballots were shredded that night.

A request for the financials was also made by Navarre Press to which Dixon replied that the request needed to be brought before the full board meeting for a vote.

The next meeting is

scheduled for Nov. 21.

As a nonprofit organization, NYSA must file IRS Form 990 each year. Upon a review of the independently retained forms, NYSA brought in $741,270 for fiscal year 2010, an increase of almost $430,000 from fiscal year 2009. Expenditures for fiscal year 2010 were listed as $728,749, an increase of $410,000 from fiscal year 2009.

The NYSA board meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of each month at the gym at the Navarre Sports Complex.

The first meeting is for discussion only; official votes take place at the second meeting.

The volunteers go through federal clearance and are mostly health care or logistics experts. The team last deployed to Haiti and also deployed after Hurricane Katrina. The group arrived in Newark, N.J., Nov. 3 and stayed at the airport all day until buses came to transport them to the Hilton Millenium at the World Trade Center area.

“As we neared the Holland Tunnel we had to detour, meandering through a darkened Hoboken, N.J., gas smells all about,”Vince Bishop posted on the DMAT blog.“Finally crossed the river via the Lincoln Tunnel and made our way to the World Trade Center area.”

On Nov. 4, the team traveled to Middlesex County College to assist members of the U.S. Public Health Service with manning a 250bed Federal Medical Station.

A convoy of Gulf Power Company crews traveled north before the storm hit to help with the expected storm restoration. A team of 70 storm restoration experts were sent to the Philadelphia area. A total of 48 line crew personnel and 22 support personnel assisted the electric utility, PECO. “Our crews are experts in restoration and are in high demand to help in the wake of these devastating storms,” said Jeff Rogers, Gulf Power spokesperson, in a press release. “Our employees are battle-tested and ready.”

Pen Air Federal Credit Union is collecting monetary donations for the relief efforts of the American Red Cross. Funds will be collected at all Pen Air FCU locations during the next two weeks but may be extended depending on donations and the needs of Red Cross.

“Our hearts go out to all those affected by this horrible storm. Pen Air Federal Credit Union understands the mission of the Red Cross, and hopes our community will respond in helping support that mission,” said Pen Air FCU President and CEO Stewart Ramsey in a press release.

The University of West Florida will hold its annual Veterans Day Observance program from 10:30 a.m.noon Nov. 8 in the UWF Commons Auditorium. The guest speaker at the event

will be Chief Master Sgt. Walter H. Richardson, recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal and a member of the prestigious Tuskegee Airmen.

Richardson, a 30-year military veteran, enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp in 1949.

He was among the 1,500 enlisted men chosen to help in the integration of the Air Force and was selected as one of the twelve outstanding airmen of the Air Force in 1972.

In 2010, Richardson received the Congressional Gold Medal as a documented original Tuskegee Airman.

Richardson’s life is chronicled in his memoir,“How Great Thou Art: A Black Boy’s Depression-Era Success Story.”

He said he left the residence because of the arguing, but Grubbs followed him to East Bay Boulevard and grabbed his book bag at which time several Smirnoff Red bottles fell out.

The victim stated Grubbs slapped him and continued to attack him. He said he punched Grubbs to defend himself but then Grubbs picked up a Smirnoff bottle and struck the victim across the forehead several times.

Grubbs told officers that the verbal argument had progressed to a fist fight. He said he followed his boyfriend and grabbed his bag to keep him from leaving. Grubbs said he noticed the Smirnoff bottles and then his boyfriend punched him in the face and kicked him in the stomach.

Grubbs said he tried to defend himself by exchanging punches with the alleged victim.

Two witnesses told officers that while driving on East Bay Boulevard, they saw a fist fight occurring on the road. One witness stated the victim was screaming for help and was trying to get away from Grubbs.The other witness also said he saw the victim attempting to get away while being dragged on the ground.

The officer reported the victim had a bloody nose and several large hematomas on his forehead. The officer also reported the victim’s nose may have been broken.

He was transported to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.

Grubbs was transported to Santa Rosa County Jail without incident.

In the original complaint, the alleged victim stated that he knew of at least one other victim but did not know where he was and it had been about six years since he (original complainant) and the second victim had spoken to each other.

In the course of the investigation, the second victim

was located and a third was found, leading to the additional charges.

“If there was one count where it is a sexual battery on a child under 12 (years old) by a person 18 (years old) or older, that charge carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison,” said Parker.“It (additional charges) doesn’t affect the sen-

tencing that could be imposed if there are additional charges, but his guideline score sheet may be affected.”

Parker explained that the guideline score sheet is used for sentencing purposes and that the additional charges could affect that score sheet.

The alleged sexual battery occurred from 1979-1986 with

the victims stating that the battery began when they were 5 or 6 and continued until they were about 12.

Collinsworth has retained the services of private attorney Sharon Wilson. His bond was increased to $375,000 from $250,000 and he is still at the Santa Rosa County Detention Center.

Staff reports Navarre Press The U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Bates a Santa Rosa County man wanted in connection with a murder that took place over five years ago in Arizona.

According to a U.S. Marshals press release, Jack Bates Rider III is the alleged sole suspect of killing an Arizona woman in Yavapai County just outside of Phoenix.

According to the criminal complaint and warrant filed in Yavapai, the 32-year-old Rider, originally from Arizona, is said to have killed Krystal Wilson in act of what the complaint states was premeditated on July 19, 2007.

Information was that he allegedly strangled her either during or after the course of a personal relationship.

Rider was arrested by Marshals and Escambia County investigators assigned to their task force at about 9 p.m. last night, as he left an academy class at the George Stone Technical Center located at 2400 Longleaf Drive.

Rider had recently enrolled as a student to be a Corrections Officer. Detectives from Yavapai County were also present when he was taken into custody.

“There was no way for the officials at George Stone to know he was a wanted man,” said Task Force spokesman Inspector Dominic Guadagnoli.“For case sensitive reasons Rider was not listed as a fugitive in NCIC (National Crime Information Center); so if the school checked it would not show him being a wanted man.”

Rider was arrested without incident and brought to the Escambia County Jail and booked in on that warrant and as a fugitive from justice. The murder charge has a $500,000 bond.

Nell Jordan, his long-time significant other, said it was his heart that she loved the most. Jordan suffered a stroke in the late 1980s but after they met, he told her “I don’t have any money, but you’ll never go into a nursing home. I’ll take care of you.”

And care for her he did until he died.

His life before moving to Navarre was filled with many adventures, some he talked about and some he kept private. According to Jordan, he lied about his age to join the Navy during World War II. His older brother was already in the Navy and Jordan was planning on meeting his brother in Japan, said Connelly. He never got to meet him though because his brother was shot down.

“My dad didn’t talk about the war. It was all kept quiet; all he would say is ‘that is the past and this is now,’” Connelly said.

From 1952 to 1969, he served as a police officer in Boston, Mass., and at one point provided security for then Sen. John F. Kennedy.

Dodge used his experience as a police officer when he served as the Dade County sheriff after he moved to Florida in the 1970s.

Dodge also lived in Bradenton and New Orleans before finding a home in Milton, according to Jordan.

It was there that she met Dodge in a“strip joint.”Jordan had suffered her first stroke and her niece was taking care of her. Jordan said that one day “she dressed me up and took me to the strip joint and she said ‘you’re going to be a hostess,’ and that’s how I met Bob.” Jordan said that Dodge

Robert Stanley Dodge, who died Oct. 19, lived a full life and according to friends and family, and it was a life well lived.

Dodge’s 84 years of traveling life’s journey was filled with experiences that were joyful and sad, but he maintained a love of life and a good heart. His journey eventually brought him to Navarre in 2000 where he was an active member of the Navarre Krewe of Jesters.

“He was one of my best friends,”said Wayne Hall, Krewe president.“(He will be) dearly missed.”

Debbi Connelly, Dodge’s daughter and one of four children, said that the three things that epitomized Dodge were“his love of life,

was there to meet a friend whom he had loaned money to and when she saw him she thought“he was the ugliest man in the world, bald headed and red face,”she said with a laugh. But he started talking to her, and they were together ever since.

They moved to Navarre in 2000 and Dodge and Jordan became active members of the community. He joined the Krewe of Jesters where he played Santa Claus, helped build floats, worked on the scholarship committee and chauffeured the king and queen in the annual Mardi Gras parades. In 2004 he and Jordan were named king and queen and that year, he had the chance to be chauffeured. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Dodge was selected to fly on an honor flight to Washington, D.C. “He really enjoyed that,”she said.

With his natural beard and jolly spirit, he was a natural at playing Santa. Each year, he would work at the malls in Pensacola and appear as Santa for many local events. Eventually, he only appeared as Santa for local events.

“I loved him playing Santa Claus,”said Connelly.“He made such a good Santa Claus.”

Fellow Jester Pete Peterzen echoed the sentiment when he said ,“Christmas will not be the same without Santa Bob around. He was truly a fine gentleman.”

According to Jordan, Dodge wasn’t a flirt but if a lady looked nice, he told her.

“He would say if a lady cares enough to fix herself up, she ought to be told she looks nice,”said Jordan.

Colin family keeps son’s memory alive

Staff reports Navarre Press On. Nov. 8, the Florida Department of Transportation will activate the new traffic signal at the intersection of U.S. Highway 98 and Green Briar Parkway/Country Club Road in Gulf Breeze.

The newly installed signal has been in flash mode to acquaint motorists with the new changes at this location.

The new signal heads are mounted on mast arms in the horizontal position. Since the signal heads are in the horizontal position, motorists with color weakness problems will need to remember that the red indication is on the left and the green indication is on the right.

Drivers are urged to use caution when approaching the intersection. All activities associated with this project are weather dependent and may be delayed or rescheduled in the event of inclement weather.

Installing the new traffic light was an effort led by Rep. Doug Broxson, R-Gulf Breeze, and Santa Rosa County Commissioners following several pedestrian deaths in the Tiger Point area of U.S. 98.

Broxson worked closely with the FDOT regarding local safety concerns on U.S. 98 in Santa Rosa County.

The new signal is designed to improve safety and traffic movement and to help pedestrians and cyclists cross the road safely.

“Safety is the number one priority of the Department and that is why we continue to seek bold and innovative solutions enhancing safety for all road users, including motorists and pedestrians,” FDOT District Three Secretary Tommy Barfield said in a press release.

Donor sought for decorated veteran

Two years later while serving a second tour in Iraq, the flight surgeon noted Garshasb’s gait was off and sent him to have a CAT scan.

The CAT scan revealed the medulloblastoma at the base of his skull. He was mede-

vaced to Walter Reed Army Hospital where he spent eight months undergoing extreme radiation and chemotherapy treatment.

Surgery was also performed on Easter Sunday 2003 to remove as much of the tumor as possible. “We were told he would only live two to three months,�said Joani.

He was medically retired with 19.5 years of service in 2005 and a couple of years later he was diagnosed with the blood disease that would

continue to wreck havoc on his body. During an injection for the disease, he suffered an allergic reaction causing a stroke. His speech is slow and walking is difficult, but he continues to persevere.

Now he needs help that only another person can provide through a bone marrow transplant. Edward Negron, a close friend and comrade, sent out an email asking people to sign up to be a possible bone marrow donor.

“To help them in this moment anyone and everyone can see if they can volunteer to be a bone marrow donor,�wrote Negron in his release.

To join the national registry, go to www.marrow.org and click on the Join the Registry tab at the top of the page. Garshasb’s name has been place on the national bone marrow registry. “The more people that register the better his chances of finding a suitable donor,�wrote Negron.

Milton Veterans Day ceremony The 2012 Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony held on Nov. 12 in downtown Milton. Navid Garshasb of Navarre needs a bone marrow transplant because of a blood disorder he was diagnosed with due to radiation and chemotherapy treatment used to combat a brain tumor.

Garshasb was featured in the Aug. 9 issue of the Navarre Press. Garshasb, a retired master sergeant, underwent extensive treatment for a medulloblastoma in the base of his skull in 2003.The discovery of the fast-growing high-grade tumor came two years after the MH-53 Garshasb was riding in crashed into the Afghani Mountains, just three months after Sept. 11, 2001.

An airborne linguist at the time, he is credited with saving the lives of his fellow crewmen and the lives of several shepherds that had seen the crash and went to the aircraft’s downed location. Joani Garshasb, Navid’s wife, explained that the Special Forces that had been on board the flight were ready to kill the shepherds, but Navid was able to discern that they did not pose a threat to them. Although seriously injured in the crash, he was able to diffuse a situation that could have ended very differently. “He set down his gun‌ he was broken and he struggled to walk to them,â€?

Blue Angels change of command The U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, held a squadron change of command ceremony on Nov. 4 at the National Naval Aviation Museum on Naval Air Station (NAS) Cmdr. Tom Frosch will relieve Capt. Greg McWherter as Blue Angel commanding officer/flight leader. Frosch joined the Blue Angels team in September.

He was recently the commanding officer of Strike Fighter Squadron 146 (VFA-146) where he also served as executive officer. McWherter is scheduled to transfer from the Blue Angels to Naval Service Training Command on NAS Pensacola.

By Bobby and Nancy Spottswood Navarre Press Never let it be said that we overlook a possible“Here’s Looking,”victim. Back in April, 2009, we interviewed Janet “Honey”Small, a 92-year-old firecracker with a short fuse, and she introduced us to her youngest son.

“He’s Paul Frank Small Jr., but he goes by Skip,”she said.

Realizing Skip was a potential,“victim,”we assigned him as“prey”status, but before we pounce on our quarry, let’s bring the family up to date.

Skip is 68, and his daughter, Alexsys, is 5; Honey is 95, and she no longer waves the longhandled wooden spoon she used as a baton while playing the kazoo and leading the Holley-Navarre Senior Association’s Kitchen Band when we first met in 2002.

“No, but I’m still ornery,” she laughed.

Although a broken back and femur have slowed the former Scottish Highland Dancer who won many

awards performing the Highland Fling, Sword Dance, Sailor’s Horn-Pipe, the Irish Jig, and the Charleston, she only uses her walker,“sometimes.”

Skip had moved from Palm Harbor in 2001 to live in Navarre with his mother,“temporarily” until he recovered from a double dose of being laid off and newly divorced.

He and Chicago native, Karen Gilpin, met and married in Miami in 1976. They had two sons during their 24-year marriage.

David and Shannon live in Orlando, while Nicolas and S’Vana live in Winter Park.

Soon after moving here, Skip was working the midnight shift at Walmart when Cupid’s arrow jabbed him again.

“I saw this tall, beautiful girl, she was 5-foot-10, her name was Je’Neane … she was working all night too,”he continued, relishing the memory.

Sharing breakfast at the Waffle House led to dating and in 2002, they got married.

A favorite pastime was walk-

ing together, and this probably saved Skip’s life when he presented with the symptoms of a heart attack during a walk.

“I was in denial, but she said,‘you’re having a heart attack,’”he recalled.

“She was right. I had a heart attack, and triple bypass surgery in 2005, our daughter, Alexsys, was born in 2007 …

Alexsys was 9 months old when Je’Neane died in July, 2008,”he murmured, looking across the room at their daughter.

Skip remembers the Miami where he was born and raised as a“segregated Miami,” he said.“Every school I went to was all white,” he added, looking back to when he and his track teammates learned the prowess of Black athletes.

“Our Miami Senior High School track team was working out at Moore Park on 36th Street, and a black team from Northwestern High School came down and started working out on the same field, and as we watched them, we said, ‘you know, I’m glad we don’t have to run against those guys … they were fast!”he said with emphatic admiration.

“Blacks and whites didn’t play sports together or against each other back then, so we didn’t know.”

Skip joined the Navy in 1962, and news of the Cuban Missile Crisis was shrouded in the blood, sweat and tears

that he and other recruits shed meeting the demands of basic training at Great Lakes Training Center in Chicago.

“You’re out of touch in boot camp, so when we got out, we said,‘what missile crisis?’” he laughed.

Following graduation from electricians’ school and the rigorous training of submarine school, Skip was assigned to USS Tiru – SS 416, a World War II diesel-electric sub in Hawaii.

“She was very quiet, part of a hunter-killer group,”he said, explaining that they often stop, and passively listen and record the sounds of ships as they passed above.

When President John F. Kennedy was shot, Skip recalled that they were on full alert and at battle stations for several days; “We made Westpac (Western Pacific) cruises to Japan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Northern islands of Japan where it gets cold … we stopped at Midway Island just to see that it was still there,” he cracked, with his characteristic tongue-in-cheek semimocking tone. Returning to Hawaii, he was transferred to Mare Island Naval Shipyard atVallejo, Calif., before being reassigned to the fleet.

“The ship was in Japan; USS Windom County, LST 1170… Landing Ship Tank, or as we referred to it,“Large Slow Target,”he chuckled.

“All of a sudden, I found

myself in the waters of Vietnam, down in Da Nang… wasn’t quite sure what we was doing there, never heard of the place, didn’t know we were in an armed conflict when we got there,”he said, his tone teasingly sarcastic.

“We made a lot of beachheads there, carrying Marine Corp and Army people in and out, all the way from Da Nang down to Saigon; still just not cognizant of the fact we were there,”he continued.

“Being shot at,”I suggested.

“Yeah, there was that,”he agreed.

Skip also served aboard the USS Tioga County, LST 1158.

“My second tour, we spent seven months on the Mobile Riverine Force in the Mekong River Delta. We were the mother ship to all the patrol boats … the Swift boats. We had all the ammunition, fuel and food so these guys could run around and fight,”he continued, speaking in his easy manner.“We followed them up and down the Delta seven months.”

“Get holes in your boat,”I asked.

“Well, they shot at us, but they weren’t very good shots, mortars came in and landed in the water … nothing really exciting,”he said.

One incident that happened when they were docked in Saigon got their attention though, when the sailor on Quarter Deck Watch – (Quarter-deck is the main security check point aboard a vessel when in port or anchored.

This is where the gangway is rigged and the watch is posted) – armed with a .45 automatic sidearm, playing with the weapon, chambered a round.

“Remember, we’re in downtown Saigon, the hammers back (the gun is cocked) he’s aiming at a seagull, puts the gun to his face like this (up to his eye) pulls the trigger, the slide recoils and hits him in the face, he falls to the deck bleeding, and they sound the alarms,‘were under attack, snipers …’”Skip continued, voice raising to near screech level.

“Needless to say, the young man was in trouble when it

was discovered that nobody was shooting at us, and that’s about the most exciting thing,” he chuckled.

Soon after leaving the Navy, Skip married Stanton Island native, Lorraine Jochym in 1968.

“It didn’t last long. We got divorced … my fault …”he said, turning his attention to Alexsys when she asked him a question.

As he was in the Navy, Skip was in civilian life. He wasn’t interested in making rank or advancement. He was satisfied just working.

“I had the smarts, just didn’t have the desire,”he said, naming his work career.“I worked at a sheet metal factory, handling baggage at the airport, a aircraft tire retreading facility, Florida Power and Light … I worked where mom worked at Air Works, a jet engine overhaul facility; (Honey was office manager) longest I ever worked for a company was 10 years for Ryder Trucks in Miami,”he said.

“But, in 1977, I joined the Florida National Guard, and got out in 1993. That 16 years, plus six years in the Navy gave me 22 years military service.”

Skip also applied himself long enough to attend different semesters at Miami Dade Community College, Florida Atlantic, Florida International University, and graduated from Barry University at Miami Shores with a bachelor’s degree in professional studies, and an associate’s degree in management and supervision.

Today, he keeps busy raising Alexsys, doing the shopping, and caring for his mother. When she mentioned that the wheel of her walker was loose, and as Skip promised to fix it, Nancy said,“You’re so small Skip could pick you up and carry you.”

“No, no, no!”she exclaimed; then, letting us know she didn’t need,“nobody picking me up,”she got out of her chair, and walked into the kitchen … smiling.

Staff Reports Navarre Press PACE – James Mullin, a Navarre High School senior, qualified for Saturday’s Region 1-3A cross country meet by finishing 12th at district this weekend at Sims Middle School.

Mullin won’t be traveling alone to Sunny Hill Farms in Tallahassee for the regional competition; the Raiders finished fourth at district as a team, just good enough to advance. Under Florida High School Sports Association rules, the top 14 individuals and four teams at the district meet qualify for regionals.

Mullin completed the 5,000-

meter course (3.1 miles) in 16 minutes, 43.40 seconds. The boys’winner, Thomas Howell of Niceville, finished in 15:37.83. Howell’s teammate, Nicholas Morken, crossed the line second in 15:52.21.

Coach Tom Lintz said he would be surprised if the Raiders advance beyond regionals as a team.

“We have probably maxed out,”he said in an email Monday.“(Individual runners’) times are not near what they have to be to move on.”

Illness has hampered the Raiders’progress, he said.

“We haven’t had real good team luck lately.”

The Fort Walton Beach Vikings won both the boys

and girls team titles.The boys posted a meet-low score of 29 points, finishing ahead of second-place Niceville (70 points), third-place Washington (106) and Navarre (112).

The Vikings’ girls led the way with 26 points, followed

by Niceville with 78, Pace with 100, Crestview with 140 and Choctawhatchee with 143 points.

Navarre finished sixth with 149 points. Sophomore Raina Quintanilla was the Raiders’ first finisher, crossing the line 24th overall in 21:23.67.

The regional meet will start with the girls’ race at 8 a.m.

Saturday, Nov. 10, followed by the boys’run at 8:45 a.m.

By Adam Lacquement Navarre Press The Raiders defense wreaked havoc on the Mosley Dolphins on Friday night leading the Raiders to a 28-13 victory in front of a rowdy home crowd at Bennett C. Russell Stadium.

In victory Navarre High School completed a perfect regular season in district play posting a 5-0 record. They improved to 8-1 overall and extended their win streak to seven heading into the regular season finally against Gulf Breeze High School.

Just a week after securing the District 2-6A crown and a first round home playoff game, the Raiders had to shake off a lackluster start on offense and overcame a bit of adversity.

Starting quarterback Andrew Reives was lost to injury late in the second quarter and Clemson bound wide-out Jordan Leggett sat out the second half due to illness.

It was the Raider defense’s complete domination that provided the time needed to get their offense on track.

“Our defense played really well tonight and that was a key to our success,”said Navarre head coach Jay Walls after the game.

The Raiders did not allow a first down in the first half yielding 19 yards of total offense.

The defensive mauling continued holding the Dolphins to 160 yards of total offense for the game, 64 yards came on the final drive and also resulted in the only offensive points with 41 seconds remaining in the game.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Mosley Dolphins (3-6, 0-5) jumped to a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter. The Dolphins were the benefactors of a botched quarterback, center exchange by the Raiders. After several players from both teams failed to corral the ball, it would be Mosley’s Aaron Mendoza recovering the fumble in the end zone for a Dolphin touchdown.

The Raiders offense would right the ship, scoring two quick touchdowns on their ensuing two possessions. The first Raider score came off a 60-yard gallop by Gatlin Casey, sweeping around the left side of the line. Casey shook off two Dolphin defenders before darting back toward the center of the field, where Reives threw a crucial block around the 10yard line ensuring the touchdown. Chandler Moorer added his first of four extra points and drew the Raiders even with the Dolphins at 7.

The next Raider score came from running back Jay Warren when he ripped through the Dolphin defense for an 84-yard touchdown run, his first of two touchdowns. Weaving in and out, Warren had some defenders miss him twice, before simply out running every-

Webb delivered a 16-yard strike to Mikul Smith to cap an eight play, 69-yard drive and took the Raiders to a 28-7 lead mid way through the fourth quarter.

Walls pointed to the two scoring drives as a bright spot offensively and expressed confidence in his back up quarterback.

“He is a good athlete, good arm, and he works hard,”he said. Webb finished 6 of 9 passing for 83 yards and a touchdown in relief.

The Wildcat keeper came out of the goal to cut down the angle, but Olson powered the ball past him and into the net for a 4 – 0 lead. Four minutes later, Olson scored his second goal when he intercepted a goal kick by the Wildcats and went in alone against the helpless keeper. Olson blasted the shot past the keeper for a 5 – 0 lead.

He easily beat the Crusader keeper for a 1 – 0 lead. The Raiders did not score again until the beginning of the second half of play. Layne gathered in a pass from Cody White. Layne raced down the left side of the field. He crossed the ball to the middle of the field where Bethell was trailing the play. Bethel hit a rocket from 20 yards out to give the Raiders a 2 – 0 lead.

Layne assisted on the third goal as well. As Layne ran down the left side, he made a late cross to Dominic Dudai.

Alone against the helpless Crusader keeper, Dudai’s shot gave the Raiders a 3 – 0 lead.

The next game is scheduled for Nov. 8 at Pine Forest.

BASEBALL Fall camp The Northwest Florida State College baseball team is holding a camp for boys ages 7-14 on Nov. 19-20. The camp is in two full-day (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) sessions. Lady Raiders tie Sacred Heart, lose to Catholic

Catholic 2, Navarre 1 The Raiders girls’ soccer team lost its first regular season match on Oct. 30 at Catholic by a 2 – 1 final score.

“We played well against a good team,”said Coach Rob Simon.“We have a young team and they are still learning. The fact that we played a good team, this close, is encouraging.”

The only Raider score occurred in minute 38. Bri Young was transitioning from defense to offense down the right side.Young was fouled by a defender near the mid

field line and was awarded a free kick. She lofted a long kick toward the goal.The ball bounced high near the goal and Jade Whitley moved under the ball. She outjumped the Crusader defenders and headed the ball into the net, tying the score 1 – 1 at the half.

The Raiders had several scoring opportunities, but their shots either rebounded off another player or missed the net completely. Navarre easily could have been on the winning end of the score. Jenny Fitzpatrick, Hunter Moorer, Shelby Clark and Hannah Gullickson played well on offense providing crossing

passes that the Raiders barely missed converting into scores.

Veteran defenders, Hayley Naker, Morgan Littlewood, Mercedes Schmick andYoung did a good job of keeping the Crusader forwards out of the defensive end of the field.

Raider keeper Julianna DeSalle was solid in goal, stopping a point blank shot one minute into the second half.

The first Crusader score occurred when a crossing pass eluded two or three Raiders and was knocked into the goal by a Crusader midfielder. The second goal found a Crusader all alone in front of

the net. She picked up a rebound off the post and DeSalle did not have a chance on the play.

Gullickson kicked the ball out to Melia Gross. Gross passed to Clark moving toward the right side of the goal.

The Sacred Heart keeper came out of the goal to cut down the angle, but Clark blasted a shot past the keeper from close range to tie the score. Earlier in the game, Raider Jenny Fitzpatrick scored her first goal of the season from close range after receiving a pass from Clark.

Sacred Heart Academy 2, Navarre 2 The Raiders tied Sacred Heart Academy from New Orleans on Nov. 3 at NYSA despite missing Hayley Naker and Rylie Slaybaugh. Trailing most of the game, the Raiders tied the score in minute 69.

Moorer worked hard, bringing a ball down the left side of the field. She crossed a pass in front of the Sacred Heart goal to Gullickson.

Johnson holds off Keselowski for Texas win, lead

By Stephen Hawkins AP Sports Writer FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Jimmie Johnson and Brad Keselowski were nearing the start-finish line after a late restart at Texas when their cars suddenly slammed together.

Somehow, they managed to maintain control and prolong their battle for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship.

"Fortunately, we both stayed 1-2 and didn't crash, didn't lose a spot on the racetrack," Johnson said. "But I knew he was serious about the race lead prior to that and that took it to a new level. " Johnson still has the advantage, holding a seven-point lead with two races left after winning Sunday.

But the five-time champion knows he's got a fight on his hands from the young challenger who is trying to get Roger Penske his first Sprint Cup title.

"The gloves are off and it's bare-knuckle fighting," Johnson said.

Before their big bang inside the final 10 laps, Keselowski was coming up the track with Johnson on the outside. After the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet got loose, Johnson seemed to be charging ahead before they ricocheted off each other heading toward the frontstretch.They stayed side-by-side into the next lap, and appeared to scrape each other again — and still had to get through another restart.

"I raced hard, and I'm sure someone would say dirty," said Keselowski, who overcame an early pit problem and got back up front by taking only two tires on one of the last stops. "Anytime you run close to certain guys you're racing them dirty according to some people.

But I raced hard, and we both came back around, so there's something to be said for that."

When there was a third restart in the last 20 laps, for a green-white-checkered finish, Johnson regained the lead for the seventh and last time to win from the pole for the second week in a row.

He charged on the outside after some more bumping, clearing Keselowski on the backstretch with 1½ laps left.

But only after a little finger-pointing at Keselowski, who after his runner-up

"Just wanted him to use his head. There is no sense in taking us both out in the process," Johnson said.

"That's the first time that we've really engaged at that level and raced each other that hard. To his credit, he did a nice job of getting right to the edge, and we brought home race cars. We weren't wadded up to look like a bunch of fools."

They go to Phoenix next week, where Johnson has won four times and finished fourth eight months ago in the second race of the season. Keselowski finished fifth then and has never won there.

The season finale is at Homestead.

Johnson led 168 of the 335 laps at the 1½-mile highbanked track for his 60th career victory and the 700th in Sprint Cup for Chevrolet.

It also means a sizable donation for disaster relief on the East Coast in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

Lowe's, Johnson's primary sponsor, had pledged to match what he earned at Texas — $492,086.

Keselowski had never finished better than 14th at Texas before leading five times for 75 laps.

He fell from first to ninth during a stop when he slid too deep into his stall and

got caught in a jam of cars on pit road after his team had to push him backward.

On the next stop, after working his way back to fourth, Keselowski opted for only left-side tires on his No. 2 Dodge when everybody else took four tires.

After restarting the final 20 laps in first again, the strategy almost worked. Until the last restart.

Kyle Busch, who led four times for 80 laps, finished third with a close-up view of Johnson and Keselowski.

"Those guys got side by side and they were running hard. It seemed like Brad was moving up the racetrack to force Jimmie into the dirty racetrack. ... He's

no dummy. He's smart," Busch said. "Last restart though, Jimmie got an excellent restart."

There were nine cautions for 49 laps, including that late flurry that changed the race. It sure didn't start that way, before some yellow flags in bunches.

After the April race at Texas ended with a track-record 234 consecutive green-flag laps, the first 100 laps Sunday were without a caution.

Those 334 laps were the equivalent of 501 miles, or a full Sprint Cup race at Texas.

Tony Stewart finished fifth, followed by Clint Bowyer, who is 36 points back in third in the series standings.

Keselowski feels like he controls his own destiny.

But Johnson is in the lead.

"It's a small amount of control, but we're definitely in control. We don't have to catch any or make up any points," Johnson said. "Seven points is nothing to feel comfortable about and to relax on. We're still going to go into Phoenix and act as if we're behind and go in there to try to sit on the pole and win the race again."

Youths can join the FWC conservation team Staff reports Navarre Press Even though young people are allowed to hunt and fish in Florida without having to buy a license until they turn 16 years old, a change in the license system now makes it possible for youngsters to voluntarily purchase their licenses early and start contributing today toward conservation.

Youths under 16 years of age can now purchase their very first annual freshwater, saltwater or hunting license, which will remain valid until their 17th birthday, no matter how young they are when they buy it. All three types of licenses are $17.

“You’re never too young to start contributing to our great state’s hunting and fishing heritage and protecting our wild habitats and resources,”said Richard Corbett, a Commissioner with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).“And this new ability to purchase a license creates a wonderful opportunity to do just that.”

The general gun season runs Nov. 3 – Jan. 20 in Zone C; Dec. 1 – Feb. 17 in Zone B; and in Zone A, the second phase of general gun season runs Nov. 17 – Jan. 6. In Zone D, it starts Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 22) and lasts four days until Nov. 25.

Two weeks later, the season reopens Dec. 8 and runs through Feb. 17.

Hunters can take bucks having at least one antler 5 inches or longer, but anyone hunting deer in Florida must have the $5 deer permit. On private lands, the daily bag limit for deer is two, but during some quota hunts on WMAs, the bag limit is only one deer, and in some cases, there are antler restrictions, so read the particular WMA brochure before you hunt.

On private lands, hunters can take wild hogs yearround with no bag or size limits. On most – but not all – WMAs, there’s also no bag or size limit on wild hogs, and hunters can take them during any hunting season except spring turkey. Again, check the WMA brochure to be certain.

The highly anticipated antlerless deer season, often

called“doe week,”is Nov. 1723 (Thanksgiving week) in zones A and C, and it always runs Dec. 26 – Jan. 1 (Christmas week) in zones B and D. During doe week, the daily bag limit is one buck and one doe, or two bucks.You may not take two does in one day like you can during archery season, and spotted fawns are never legal game.

By the way, WMAs do not have an antlerless deer season.

If you hunt with deer dogs anywhere in Florida, special rules and registration requirements may apply, so call the FWC for details.

Fall turkey season in Zone A is Nov. 17 – Jan. 6. In zones B and C, it runs Dec. 1 – Jan. 27 and Nov. 3 – Dec. 30, respectively. And in Zone D, fall turkey season is Nov. 2225 and Dec. 8 – Jan. 13, except for Holmes County, where there is no fall turkey season.

Only bearded turkeys and gobblers are legal game; you must have a turkey permit ($10 for residents; $125 for nonresidents) to hunt them.

The bag limit is one bird per day, and a total of two during the archery, crossbow, muzzleloading gun and fall turkey seasons combined.

Quail season runs statewide Nov. 10 – March 3, and the daily bag limit is 12.

Shooting hours for deer, turkey and quail are a halfhour before sunrise to a halfhour after sunset. All legal rifles, shotguns, muzzleloaders,

bows, crossbows and pistols are legal for taking these resident game animals during the general gun, antlerless deer, fall turkey and quail seasons.

Snipe hunting in Florida ranks second in the nation in number of birds harvested each year, and the season always runs Nov. 1 – Feb. 15 statewide. The second phase of the mourning and whitewinged dove season also comes in this month and runs Nov. 10-25. Shooting hours for migratory game birds are one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. The bag limit for snipe is eight; for doves, the bag limit is 15.

You must get a no-cost migratory bird permit if you plan to hunt snipe, doves or any other migratory game birds.

The FWC even provides an online“Dove Hunters’Hotline,” which gives up-to-date information on Florida’s public dove fields. The address is MyFWC.com/Dove, and it is updated every Thursday throughout dove season.

Whether small-game hunting with friends and family or hunting solo, going after that monster buck, boar hog or big tom, November brings loads of great hunting opportunities.

GINS road repairs continue Gulf Islands National Seashore Superintendent Dan Brown announced that work on the Fort Pickens Road is in progress with the removal of sand and damaged asphalt. Work is expected to be completed by this winter. Fort Pickens Road will remain open, but the traveling public should anticipate lane closures while repairs are under way. Emergency repair work on J. Earle Bowden Way which began Oct. 15 continues and is expected to reopen before Thanksgiving. The road will remain closed to public use including bicycles until repairs are complete. Once the road reopens, there may be intermittent one-lane closures to complete striping of the bike lane.

Visitors are reminded to use caution when traveling through work zones and to obey the posted speed limits.

Pepper Jack Cheesy Mac Makes 6 servings

2 cups (8 ounces) dry elbow macaroni 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded Pepper Jack cheese, divided 1 can (12 fluid ounces) Nestlé Carnation Evaporated Milk 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 to 1 cup broken tortilla chips (your choice of color) 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper (optional) PREHEAT oven to 350°F. Lightly grease 2 1/2quart casserole dish.

COOK macaroni in large saucepan according to package directions; drain. Return to saucepan.

ADD cheddar cheese, 1 1/2 cups Pepper Jack cheese, evaporated milk and black pepper to macaroni; stir until combined. Pour into prepared casserole dish. Combine remaining 1/2 cup Pepper Jack cheese, tortilla chips and red pepper flakes in small bowl. Sprinkle over top. Cover tightly with foil.

BAKE for 20 minutes. Uncover; bake for an additional 10 minutes or until lightly browned.

Prime Time Pepperoni Pizza “Pie” Makes 8 servings

1 unbaked 9-inch (4-cup volume) frozen pie shell 1 package (8 ounces) shredded Italian-blend cheese, divided 2 ounces thinly sliced pepperoni (about 20 to 30, 1 1/2- to 2-inch diameter slices), cut into quarters, divided 1 can (12 fluid ounces) Nestlé Carnation Evaporated Milk 3 large eggs, beaten 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon dried basil leaves 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder PREHEAT oven to 350°F. SPRINKLE 1 cup cheese and half of pepperoni pieces onto bottom of pie shell.

WHISK evaporated milk, eggs, flour, basil and garlic powder in medium bowl until blended. Pour mixture into pie shell. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Decorate top with remaining pepperoni pieces and any other topping you like. Place quiche on baking sheet (if pie pan is made of aluminum foil).

BAKE for 40 to 45 minutes or until knife inserted near center comes out clean. Cool for 5 minutes before serving.

TIP: Choose 1/4 cup of any of your favorite toppings (such as chopped onions, red or green peppers or sliced black olives) and add as topping with the remaining pepperoni pieces.

Pet Briefs PAWS Community Yard Sale PAWS will be holding its 2012 PAWS Community Yard Sale on Nov. 17. PAWS is still soliciting donations for the sale. No set-up and no clean-up, no getting up at 5 a.m., just a great feeling from helping homeless animals. Donations can be dropped off at PAWS, 752 Lovejoy Road in Fort Walton Beach. They can also be dropped off at the Northwest Florida Fairgrounds. Items can be brought to the Fairgrounds from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

R.K. Anderson was an icon of veterinary medicine Few pet owners will recognize the name Dr. R.K. Anderson, yet your pet has benefited from his advocacy.

A press release from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine called Anderson, who died Oct. 19 at age 90, a "gentle giant" in the world of veterinary medicine.

Giant isn't a large enough word. Anderson was an icon.

No one stood as tall.

In the early 1950s, Anderson was chided as a "cookie pusher," a derogatory statement back in the day. He was running Denver's animal control facility and refused to euthanize some dogs with behavior prob-

New national monuments slated to honor military service dogs

By Sue Manning Associated Press The act of Congress is in the books, the bills are paid, the sculptures are being cast, and one of the biggest parades in the world will start a glory tour and countdown to dedication.

The first national monument to pay tribute to military dogs will be unveiled in California in just two months. The U.S. Working Dog Teams National Monument will honor every dog that has served in combat since World War II. Some cities, cemeteries and military bases across the country already have such memorials. But none has been elevated to national monument level, where it will be in the company of the Statue of Liberty,Yosemite National Park and Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

In 2000, John Burnam, a 65-year-old veteran military dog handler, wrote a book called “Dog Tags of Courage.”A year later, he got an email from a reader wondering why there were no national monuments to the dogs of war.

"We would take in these anxious dogs who were very scared," Anderson told me in 2003. "The approved method (of controlling and training problem dogs) was pretty punitive back then. I saw that we'd use these harsh methods and the dogs would get worse, becoming more anxious and more afraid. Instead, I decided to try to motivate (them) with food."

The idea of using food to train dogs was considered radical at the time, and dog trainers and veterinarians laughed at Anderson. They didn't laugh for long, though.

Anderson was always ahead of his time.

In an effort to replace the "choke collar" and punitive training devices with a kinder, gentler alternative, Anderson co-invented the Gentle Leader, the first head halter for dogs, and later helped to create the Easy

In“Dog Tags”and a 2008 book, “A Soldier’s Best Friend,” Burnam wrote about his time with the Army’s 44th Scout Dog Platoon when he was in Vietnam in 1967 and 1968.

His first dog, Timber, was injured in an ambush a few months after they teamed up, so he spent most of his tour with a German shepherd named Clipper.

“He saved my life and saved the lives of others by alerting on ambushes, snipers and booby traps.

I wanted to give something back to these animals that have done so much and asked for so little, except for food and water and the love of their handlers,” said Burnam, who received the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Back then, handlers were not able to adopt their dogs when they were retired.

“I always worried about them but I know they died over there and they died as heroes,”he said.

In 2004, Burnam and two other dog handler veterans pursued the idea in

"R.K. didn't just say stop pronging, choking and shocking dogs. He created an alternative approach, and a better way," says Toronto, Canada-based veterinary behaviorist Dr. Gary Landsberg.

Sharon Madere, of Midlothian, VA, founder of Premier Pet Products, helped launch the Gentle Leader.

"There's no question that R.K. revolutionized the way pet owners relate to and train their pets," she says.

Anderson taught those who directly teach pet owners -generations of veterinary students, veterinary technicians and dog trainers.

BeforeYouTube, Anderson had a similar idea about teaching owners to deal with pet behavior problems.

Instead of focusing only on articles and scientific papers, why not post videos on the Internet demonstrating visually how to solve those

In 2007, Jones introduced legislation authorizing establishment of the monument. Passed unanimously by Congress, it was signed the next year

Burnam designed the monument, which depicts the modern military handler and four dogs — a Doberman, German shepherd, Labrador retriever and Belgian Malinois, all breeds used in wars.

The silicon bronze handler stands more than 9 feet tall and weighs 1,500 pounds. Each dog is about 5 feet tall and weighs 550 pounds. Burnam called them“hero-sized.”

He co-founded the first Center to Study Human Animal Relationships and Environments as a cooperative effort of the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, Minneapolis, and the UM School of Public Health.

Anderson was also a charter member of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists, an organization he cherished.

The president of Natural Balance Pet Foods Inc., the company that Tillman represents, attended the show taping and volunteered to pitch in more than $1 million.

“Don’t do a thing. Natural Balance and Petco (Animal Supplies Inc.) will take care of it,” Joey Herrick said. To raise funds for the monument and its maintenance, Natural Balance created a jerky bark treat sold by Petco. Maddie’s Fund, a family-funded pet rescue foundation, also signed on as a cor-

Shaw says Anderson lived to bring people together, so dog trainers and veterinarians were encouraged to mingle and share ideas.

"Every veterinarian and nearly all dog trainers have been touched by R.K.'s influence in some way," she says.

When the float goes on display afterward at Victory Park, the real bronze monument will make its public debut next to it, Herrick said. Then the bronze monument will go on tour as it heads to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. The location was chosen as the site for the monument because that’s where most of the nation’s military’s dogs are trained.

Meanwhile, Tillman, the dog that helped get Burnam the monument funding, is also getting personal recognition for his military service. For his work entertaining troops at bases and for going through a mini Marine boot camp, the athletic bulldog has been made an honorary private 1st class.

I believe we can do a great job of teaching dogs whatever we need to without inflicting pain. After all, don't they deserve that? We're supposed to be talking about our best friends."
