Zion, a 3-month-old lion cub, will hopefully be the beginning of a new pride at Gulf Breeze Zoo. Zion arrived at his new home about a month ago from a zoo in Arkansas. He currently weighs about 17 pounds and can be seen in the zoo nursery for his bottle feedings at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily. Just like a 3-month-old baby, Zion is vocal around feeding time. Zoo Director Kayte Wanko said the zoo’s goal was to re-establish a lion pride at the zoo. The zoo had a pride of lions before the new owners acquired the zoo, but they since have died. Larry the lion was the very first male lion at the zoo and Zion’s zookeeper Megan Heidenreich remembers working with the two female lions Kit and Kat. Wanko said the three lions all lived well into their 20s, which is about average for lions within managed care. “They were very long lived

Deputy tax collector face more charges Yvonne C. Harper Navarre Press Edward Collinsworth, Santa Rosa County chief deputy tax collector, is now facing 15 charges of sexual battery against Collinsworth a child under the age of 12. Collinsworth, 45, of Pace was charged on Oct. 10 with sexual battery on two victims under the age of 12.The alleged sexual battery occurred from 1979-1986. The victims stated that the battery began when they were 5 or 6 and continued until they were about 12.

Abandoned animals found dead By Yvonne C. Harper Navarre Press

D a v i d Grubbs, 24, of Navarre was arrested Nov. 2 for felony bat- Grubbs tery after allegedly assaulting his boyfriend on East Bay Boulevard and Blackjack Circle in Navarre. Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the altercation around 1 p.m. Nov. 2. A 19-year-old male told officers that a verbal argument occurred between him and his boyfriend and escalated into a fist fight. The alleged victim stated the fight began at his boyfriend’s home on Blackjack Circle.

The smell of death permeated the foreclosed home located in the 1600 block of Winding Shore Drive in Lighthouse Point subdivision on Nov. 6 when six animals were found dead. Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeannie Schmitt was performing a follow-up call after 8 a.m. on Nov. 6 to several complaints of animal cruelty at the home. There was no one home when she arrived and she walked around to the back of the home. Upon looking through the sliding glass door and seeing two dead animals she contacted her shift supervisor Sgt.
