The Raiders celebrate Cameron Mayweather’s touchdown catch that helped the Raiders pull within one point of tying the game and sending it to overtime. By Bowden Moorer editor@navarrepress.com For the second week in a row the Raiders faced a 6’6” quarterback that has committed to a Division 1 college program. For the second week in a row Navarre has faced a 6’6” receiver that will be playing football on Saturdays. While it wasn’t always easy, for the second time in as many weeks, the Navarre defense did enough to slow down those big time recruits and help secure a win. In the second game of the 2013 campaign, Wakulla H. S. defeated the Raiders on the final play of the game. Early on in the 2014 rematch, it appeared there would be no need for any last second heroics. The War Eagles failed on a field goal attempt on the first possession of the game. The next three times they got their hands on the football, they scored touchdowns. Wakulla’s quarterback and LSU commitment Feleippe Franks shredded the defense for a 35 yard TD to Kelton Donaldson, a 28 yarder to Keith Gavin, and a 32 yard screen pass to DeMarcus Lindsay. With 10:03 left in the first half, Wakulla led 20-0 and looked like they may run away and hide. Navarre finally began to show a little life on offense. Starting from their own 30, Matthew Webb completed passes to Derrick Smith for 17 yards, 19 yards to Dylan Main, and 11 yards to

Michael Carter, 7, took a screen pass from Matthew Webb, 4, 80 yardss for a touchdown. Quentin Randolph. The drive stalled on the Wakulla sixteen and Luke Morton got the Raiders on the board with a 33 yard field goal. Thomas Leggett then picked off a Franks pass and set up the Raiders at their own 18 yard line with less than two minutes left in the half. Michael Carter gained 5 yards and Smith picked up 12 yards. A sixteen-yard completion to Carter and a twenty yarder to Randolph moved the ball to the Wakulla 29. With time running out in the half, Cameron Mayweather hauled in a fourteen-yard pass from Webb. An eleven-yard completion to Randolph got the ball to the four. A penalty on the War Eagles put it on the twoyard line.Very rarely does a play in the first half of a game turn out to be game defin-

play, Coach Jay Walls elected to go for six instead of settling for the field goal. Webb found Main in the end zone for the touchdown to make the score 20-9 and give the Raiders some much needed confidence and momentum. “The boys were really disappointed in the way they played in the first half,”said Coach Walls.“We were still in the game, but we knew we were going to have to open it up a little in the second half.” On Navarre’s first play from scrimmage in the second half, an errant Webb pass was picked off, but the defense stiffened again and forced a War Eagles punt. Wakulla extended their lead 27-9 on the next possession when they took just four plays to cover 45 yards after a Navarre punt. The

fans who folded their stadium seats and headed to the exits missed one whale of a football game from that point forward. “We knew we were going to have to make some big plays,”said Walls,“and our guys stepped up and made ‘em.” Big play #1 On first and ten from the Wakulla 20, Carter collected a screen pass from Webb, Tyrell Courtney made an excellent block on a War Eagle defender, and Carter streaked untouched the 80 yards to the end zone. Navarre got the ball back after a Wakulla punt and went right back to work. Randolph made receptions of fourteen and seven yards. Big play #2 From the 29, Webb hit Carter at about the 10 and Carter did the rest by breaking a couple of tackles and carrying two defenders into the end zone. The two-point conversion failed, leaving Navarre trailing 27-22. Big play #3 On the second play of the fourth quarter, Octavien Moyer, took a hand-off and swept around right end. Before reaching the line of scrimmage, Moyer pulled up and lofted a perfect pass to Randolph who was uncovered down the far sideline. After angling back across the field and covering about 130 yards, Randolph was brought down right at the goal line. After several moments of indeci-
