JON RICHARDSON

January

12-13

• Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

Get ready for an evening filled with laughter with Jon Richardson’s hilarious new tour, The Knitwit, which sees the British Comedy Award nominee and star of 8 Out Of 10 Cats ponder over whether the recycling will be put out on the right day and who is going to smooth over the top of the margarine, whilst pretending these aren’t his foremost concerns as he leaves home on his first tour since the last one.

LEWIS CAPALDI January

PRINCE - THE CLASSIC DOUBLE BAND

19 • M&S Bank

Arena

After the straight-to-number-one Forget Me and heartfelt ballad Pointless at the end of last year, Lewis Capaldi is on quite a roll and he’s now out on a massive world tour supporting a new album Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent due out in May. That includes Arena stops around the UK and Europe, with a Liverpool date for the bedroom musician to multiBrit winner in January.

Complete with strobe lights and an electric atmosphere, this event will be sure to shake off any lingering winter blues.

HARRY HILL

January 23 • Liverpool Philharmonic

Harry Hill is the master of surreal, slapstick comedy and he’s back on the road with a new live show for the new year, coming to the Phil for one night. He’s promising that Pedigree Fun will be an all-singing, all-dancing one-man spectacular, but there’ll also be cameo appearances by Harry’s partner in crime, Stouffer the Cat, and a debut from Ian, The Information Worm and Sarah the Elephant.

LIVERPOOL BEER FESTIVAL

February

16-18

• Lutyens Crypt, Metropolitan Cathedral

With more than 200 real ales and ciders, the Liverpool Beer Festival, organised by CAMRA, returns to the Crypt of the Metropolitan Cathedral for a weekend in February. GINNY LEMON & SISTER SISTER

After TV shows such as The X Factor, Joe Lycett’s Got Your Back and Celebrity Coach Trip, now they’re live on stage with the You Keep Me Hangin’ On Tour.

IBIZA CLASSICS

Gary Christian’s distinctive rich vocals are still as sublime as ever, and this is a chance to hear the band’s stellar back catalogue including hits Harvest for the World, Forgotten Town and Ideal World in an intimate club setting.

LIVERPOOL INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL

February 23-26 • Capstone Theatre

Liverpool International Jazz Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary this year with a line-up of awardwinning international artists spanning a range of genres from Indo-jazz to Afro-funk and classical. Based at Liverpool Hope University’s Capstone Theatre, it has gigs from Milap Indo Jazz Club, Devils of Moko, Dock in Absolute, Shez Raja featuring Tony Kofi and Marius Neset Quartet.

MATTHEW BOURNE'S SLEEPING BEAUTY

March

7-11

• Liverpool Empire

All of Matthew Bourne’s ballet interpretations are something special, but this is among his most critically acclaimed. A decade after it was first staged at Sadlers Wells in London, the award-winning Sleeping Beauty returns, creating a magical world of fairies and vampires, and setting the scene for an unforgettable gothic romance and a tale of good versus evil.

SAM RYDER

March 25 • O2 Academy

Liverpool is building up with excitement for the Eurovision Song Contest coming in May, and one artist who’s sure to be front and centre is last year’s runner-up Sam Ryder. He went from Tik Tok viral sensation to fly the flag for the UK with Space Man and now ahead of 2023’s contest he’s on a huge UK tour that comes to Liverpool in March.

From concerts to comedy tours, Liverpool is home to a bursting selection of events over the next three months.

JON RICHARDSON 10 minutes with

When he’s not on TV alongside his real-life other half Lucy Beaumont in Meet the Richardsons, or on one of a string of comedy panel shows, Jon Richardson has pretty humble ambitions.

“Aside from that I'm trying to save the planet, make people laugh and be a great dad and husband, what more can you do?”

The answer is perform live, at long last, after an absence brought about by the pandemic. He’s taking his new standup show, The Knitwit (named after his trademark cardigans), on the road until the early summer, with a couple of dates in January at the Liverpool Philharmonic.

So far, the critics have been not just kind but positively enthusiastic, variously describing it as ‘whip-smart comedy’, ‘a wildly funny whinge of volcanic frustrations’ and – probably the one the 40-year-old Lancastrian would most recognise – ‘moany old brilliance.’

Over the past few years, Jon’s become one of the most in-demand comedy acts on TV, best known as a team captain on Channel 4’s 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, as well as for guest appearances on Taskmaster, Would I Lie to You? and Have I Got News for You.

And then there’s Meet The Richardsons, co-written by Lucy and Car Share cowriter Tim Reid, which offers a little

snapshot into the couple’s homelife, including parenting time with their daughter Elsie, and exchanges with their celeb friends and Hebden Bridge neighbours.

Lucy describes that as a mockumentary: 80% real life and the rest made up. Nothing’s off limits, but basically they come across as just a normal pair with all the usual domestic ups and downs who happen to be very funny.

All the little frets of real life are very much what The Knitwit is about too –remembering to put the recycling out on the right day, smoothing over the margarine and why are all the lights on upstairs when everyone’s downstairs?

The Navigator added to his list by quizzing him all about the tour and more…

Is it safe to say you’re excited to be playing live again?

The hardest thing about lockdown for comics was that there was all this scrambling to put gigs on Zoom. But you can’t be as funny online. A standup on Zoom will never be as amusing as a funny video. During the pandemic, the content that was being generated by really talented, tech-savvy people was just staggering. I certainly thought, I don’t know if I’ll come back from this. People can just generate their own stuff online, and it’s superb. But

there’s nothing like the live experience - the lovely theatres and that unique feeling of being together. You can still feel it now, even at this distance away from lockdown and theatres being shut. There’s still a goodwill in the room. We’re all together and not wearing masks and having a laugh. I hope that will last for the duration of the tour.

What can audiences expect from The Knitwit?

The stall I set out when I walk out onto the stage is to say that I’m trying to engineer a midlife crisis. It doesn’t come naturally to me. My instinct is still to turn up early, behave myself and not have a drink. It’s ludicrous that I would allow myself a midlife crisis, when you can pretty much do anything you want to, anyway. The premise is that I’m going to go off the rails a little bit, have a motorbike and get a tattoo. But it just descends into me being exactly the same person I’ve always been.

Tell us the kind of thing that worries you

We’ve just had this pretentious kitchen put in where the fridge is a drawer underneath the worktop. It’s just the worst thing if you have certain compulsions about cleanliness. It’s basically the salad drawer that’s in the bottom of any fridge. It is full of bits of sweetcorn and the gunk from leftover takeaways, and it’s never cleaned. Our entire fridge is one big pit of filth.

And what’s more, it doesn’t even shut properly. So every morning when I come down, my first job is to kick the fridge door shut with my heel. The fridge just gets shallower and shallower. It’s like that scene in a movie when someone’s in a submarine, and the water keeps coming in and they’re just breathing in the top 10%. That’s what our fridge is like now. You pick out what’s at the top, but you don’t reach down underneathunless you want a day off work!

How do you hope audiences react to the show?

My favourite part is when I do a routine and I can see couples or groups of mates elbow one another in the ribs. That’s gold dust. Couples have come out and they’ve heard me sum up their frustration in a way they haven’t heard before. I love that laugh of relief. ‘Yes, my partner does that too. I can’t deal with the way my partner opens the curtains either!’ I’m not talking about lockdown at all in the show, just as I made a definite choice not to talk about Brexit on the last tour. I’m just aiming to get as many laughs as I can into those 90 minutes on a stage of complete silliness.

MOST ROMANTIC SPOTS IN THE CITY FOR

VALENTINE’S DAY

When it comes to date days and nights, Liverpool is a romantic at heart, which means there are plenty of top places to go to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Not only does the city, and especially the waterfront, make a beautiful backdrop for the perfect date – and even a marriage proposal if you really want to raise the

relationship stakes – it has lots of quirky options of things for couples to do together.

If you’re looking for love inspiration this Valentine’s Day, here are The Navigator’s picks of the most romantic spots in the city to celebrate with someone special…

THE PALM HOUSE IN SEFTON PARK

Well worth a trip out to south Liverpool, the Victorian glass Palm House is one of the most stunning landmarks in the city. Opened in 1896, it survived dereliction thanks to a campaign to save and restore it. Now it’s home to a collection of plants from around the world, and a cultural centre for events too.

CROSBY BEACH

It might be a bit chilly to be sitting on the beach in February, but that doesn’t stop Crosby beach being a gorgeous place to head for a walk on the sands and a look at Anthony Gormley’s famous Other Place statues, aka the Iron Men. Wrap up, grab a hot drink for a stroll and enjoy uninterrupted river views.

PANORAMIC 34

For an incredible view across the city that’s sure to impress any date, Panoramic is hard to top for a special dinner or cocktails. As the name suggests, it’s 34 floors up so make sure you get a table by the window to soak up Liverpool’s fabulous skyline from one of the UK’s highest fine dining restaurants.

8

ROYAL ALBERT DOCK

Still down by the river, this time on Liverpool’s famous waterfront, Royal Albert Dock is perfect for spending the entire day or evening. Wander along the historic colonnades, taking in one of the independent restaurants for a meal for two, a bit of shopping, exhibitions at Tate Liverpool and then catch the sunset.

EVERYMAN CINEMA

For an old school date, you can’t beat a going to the cinema and the Everyman is a movie night made for romance because you get your own cosy sofa to snuggle down on while you watch. There are four screens to choose from and you can order food and cocktails with waiter service to your seat.

LIVERPOOL WHEEL

For a sky-high waterfront experience, the Liverpool Wheel by the Arena is unforgettable. It stands 60 metres tall and has 42 enclosed gondolas that are climate controlled so you don’t have to worry about it being cold outside. To make it extra special there’s the option of a luxury VIP one with a glass floor.

RENT A SCOOTER

To get around and see some sites on your date day, the quickest way to do it – without the stress of parking or traffic – is on a scooter. There are hundreds of red Voi e-scooters to hire in Liverpool, so you could hop on at the Pier Head, head along Otterspool Prom and drop it off when you’re ready to stop.

GEORGIAN QUARTER

If you want to feel like the leads in your own big screen rom-com, head up to Hope Street and explore around the Georgian Quarter, one of the most-filmed areas of the city. The gorgeous architecture is a gift for moviemakers, and it makes for a lovely couply walk with added coffee and cake at The Quarter.

LIVERPOOL GIN DISTILLERY

A pair who both love gin are clearly made for each other, so what better place to celebrate than at Liverpool Gin Distillery. Liverpool Organic Gin is produced on site so you can watch the master distillers in action before sampling the results in the spirits room or create your own personalised bottle.

TITANIC'S MAYA BLUE WELLNESS

There are romantic spots all around Titanic - our colonnades are an ideal place to share a glass of fizz and you can add a Valentine’s treat of a glass of Lanson, a red rose and chocolates at Stanley’s. But for a blissful Valentine’s experience escape to our subterranean spa Maya Blue Wellness, under the redbrick arches, and have a luxury pampering together.

RUM WAREHOUSE A spotlight on

For the past six years, Alison Perry has held a black tie ball at the Rum Warehouse to raise muchneeded funds for Woodlands Hospice in Aintree.

It’s now become one of the highlights of the charity’s calendar and, says Alison, it’s been able to grow into one that hundreds of guests look forward to each year thanks to the support of everyone at Titanic.

“Everything about having it at the Rum Warehouse has been perfect – the location, the venue itself and the staff who are amazing.

“I organise this on my own, so they carry me through all of it. They’re so supportive, I wouldn’t dream of going anywhere else.

“They do everything, especially on the day when they take a lot of pressure off me with setting up the room. Whatever I throw at them they happily take on and just run with it, so it’s like having your own dedicated team.”

Alison, who lives in Crosby, first organised an event in aid of the hospice in 2012 after the death of a friend there.

“I put together a small social evening in the November which was very low key, but then people suggested we should do a sit-down dinner and it gathered pace.

“Woodlands Hospice does such amazing work, it’s a beautiful place and as well as having inpatients it provides hospice at home, and has family services and bereavement counselling.

“The operational costs are £4,000 a day and it doesn’t get any funding from the NHS or government, so it relies on donations and events like this.”Alison’s Black Tie and Diamonds Ball in November this year, which attracted 300 guests, raised £9,500, making it the biggest one to date.

She says she couldn’t have done it without the team at Titanic.

“I alternate the theme of the ball, so it’s Black Tie and Diamonds every other year and the years in between we have a theme such as masquerade, a winter one and next year we’re having a circus theme.

“We’re hoping to have an aerial artist and that relies on the venue being flexible to accommodate different ideas which Rum Warehouse always is.

“I’ll usually have the first meeting with the events management team in February. I sit down with them to go through timings and proposals, I’ll have another meeting in summer, and again two weeks before the event.

“Then they just look after it all and take away the stress of organising.

“They deal with so many different things, including dietary requirements which have become so intense because you have to make sure you cover various food allergies, and they’re really well prepared.

“This year for the first time we had dancing during dinner so the dancefloor was full when they were trying to serve but it wasn’t a problem.

“Afterwards I had so much positive feedback from people telling me they’d had a great night. I got one email this year that just said, ‘everything was first class’ which said it all.”

10

AT TITANIC HOTEL Extraordinary Events

Events sales manager Ellen Bradley loves showing corporate and private clients around Titanic Hotel’s Rum Warehouse and West Bay for the first time.

“As soon as they walk into either space, their first reaction is usually ‘wow’,” she says. “I know that they’re feeling confident going back to their employers and telling them they’re going to be impressed with a really remarkable venue.

“And just seeing the expression on couples faces tells you they’ve found the place for them. They can picture how their wedding’s going to look and they know it’ll be gorgeous.”

Rum Warehouse and West Bay are both exceptional events venues in their own unique ways. West Bay and its private bar area 401 opened five years ago in the main building, retaining the original exposed red brickwork, stone floors and

steel pillars that are such a stunning feature of the hotel. It can accommodate around 180 guests in banquet style, for corporate conferences, dinners, private events and weddings, and the adjoining 401 bar is perfect to host drinks receptions and buffets.

Next to the main Titanic Hotel building, Rum Warehouse is the larger of the two, able to hold up to 500 guests in banquet style, and up to nearly 900 theatre style. Renovated in the 1950s after bomb damage sustained during the Blitz of WWII, it has a striking industrial look which makes it sought-after especially for large capacity events. It also boasts a showstopping staircase at the entrance which is a smaller replica of the original from the Titanic – the ship, not the Oscarwinning film – and a must-do photo opportunity for guests.

“Rum Warehouse is such a blank canvas, so whether you’re planning a wedding

or a corporate function it’s a great room to work with because it’s so flexible. It doesn’t have the original warehouse steel pillars so it’s ideal for conferences because there aren’t any obstructed views, and we can have live music in Rum Warehouse as there are no hotel bedrooms above.

“People absolutely love West Bay, it looks beautiful, so the choice will often depend on personal taste and also capacity. Rum Warehouse has a minimum of 250 and West Bay a maximum of 180 so depending on numbers and individual requests we can suggest the most suitable venue for clients.”

Ellen says after events had to be put on hold during the pandemic, they’re now fully recovered.

“There definitely was a time that I had serious doubts about the events industry because everyone started

having meetings at home via Zoom or Teams. I thought no one was ever going to book a traditional conference again but I was definitely wrong.

“I think after almost two years of no conferences, everyone just wanted to get back out there, meet face-to-face, and see their clients and their colleagues.

“We also had a huge surge of weddings bookings this year, with people having rebooked their postponed weddings and new enquiries, this almost doubled the normal volume.

“2022 was really exceptional, it was a golden year for events.”

For anyone wishing to enquire or if interested in a site visit, please don’t hesitate to get in contact by phone on 0151 482 5782 or by email to sales@titanichotelliverpool.com

Liverpool loves to throw a huge party and 2023’s no exception – we’ll be showcasing the city on the world stage this year and inviting hundreds of thousands of visitors to join us for a packed diary of sports and arts events.

It’s no secret we’re pretty (aka ridiculously) excited to have the Eurovision Song Contest coming here, but there’s plenty more to look forward to too.

Here’s a Cultural Calendar for 2023 with six of the best…

12

GYMNASTICS BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS

Last summer saw Britain’s finest gymnasts competing in the Commonwealth Games and now they’re battling it out for British Championship titles. Following on from the success of the World Championships at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, top level gymnasts are back in the city at the Exhibition Centre creating an incredible spectacle. Their grace on the floor and beam, and the controlled power on the vault, pommel and bars show why the gymnasts are such great allround athletes. Competitors will include World floor gold medallists Giarnni Regini-Moran and Jessica Gadirova and rings bronze medallist Courtney Tulloch.

GRAND NATIONAL April 13 - 15

Aintree Racecourse is famous as the home of the world’s greatest steeplechase – the Grand National. The three-day festival is one of the highlights of Liverpool’s sporting calendar, attracting a crowd of around 150,000 racegoers over Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Thursday, the opening day, is usually Liverpool Day, Friday is traditionally Ladies Day when glamorous punters go all-out to dress and impress for the annual Style Contest, and on Saturday it’s all leading up to the big one – the Grand National – watched by an estimated 500million people worldwide! The thrill of seeing live racing over 4 miles-plus and the atmosphere at Aintree makes it very special.

BIENNIAL June 10 - September 17

The Liverpool Biennial is the largest free festival of contemporary visual art in the UK and this year sees the 12th edition, marking its 25th anniversary here. Khanyisile Mbongwa, previously chief curator of the Stellenbosch Triennale 2020, will curate the festival which is titled uMoya: The Sacred Return of Lost Things. In the isiZulu language, uMoya means spirit, breath, air, climate and wind and for this year’s Biennial more than 30 international artists and collectives will use this, set against a backdrop of Liverpool’s history, as their inspiration for a programme of exhibitions and installations at public spaces, galleries and historic sites across the city centre.

LIVERPOOL COMIC CON

April 1 - 2

Comic Con is such an attraction for anyone who’s into pop culture, films, TV and comic books that it’s now a twice-yearly event at the Exhibition Centre. In November there was a guest line-up including actors from Vampire Diaries and The Originals and April is looking just as starry with the original Wednesday Addams, Christina Ricci, plus cast from Stranger Things, Twilight, Walking Dead and Disney legends Scott Weigner, Linda Larkin, and Jonathan Freeman, best known as Aladdin, Jasmine and the villainous Jafar. As well as meet and greets, photo opps and Q&A sessions, there’ll also be prop and set displays, loads of activities and dressing up from the crowd too.

EUROVISION SONG CONTEST May 13

Even if you’re not really a lover of the annual song fest – and honestly, some of the entries can be a bit bizarre to say the least – the fact that Liverpool was chosen to host Eurovision, beating cities from across the UK, is a massive deal for the city. Expect a huge build-up to the contest itself ahead of the finals on Saturday 13 May and a focus on honouring the original host country Ukraine. 37 countries have been confirmed to take part in this year’s contest and the UK will be hoping to go one better than Sam Ryder’s second place with Space Man in 2022 and finally get a win on home ground. There’ll be a Eurovision Village on the waterfront with live entertainment and screenings.

THE OPEN 2023 GOLF July 16 - 23

Golf fans from all over the world will be heading to Wirral this summer for the 2023 Open Championship –the 151st edition of golf’s original major – which is being held at Royal Liverpool. It will be the first time in nine years The Open has visited Hoylake after Rory McIlroy lifted the Claret Jug trophy here back in 2014. Hoylake has a reputation as a one of the toughest courses on The Open circuit, particularly when the wind is blowing, and it’s proved tricky for some of the very best players in the past. Tiger Woods is among the legends to have won here and this year Irishman McIlroy is favourite to take the title after what was an impressive winning year for him in 2022.

A GREENER 2023 Looking towards

With sustainability such a significant factor for all businesses, we sat down with Titanic Hotel’s hotel manager, Scott Davies, to hear all about what practices the hotel is implementing to do their bit for the planet.

In a hotel the size of Titanic Liverpool, often operating at full capacity, one of the biggest issues is the amount of waste we create and how we deal with it responsibly.

Sustainability is a major focus for us, so much so that Scott has put together an environmental action plan which will step up during 2023.

One of the key areas of our eco policy is recycling – the hotel already has glass recycling and last summer we added cardboard, investing in a new bailer which allows us to separate cardboard to be put into one tonne bails ready to be collected.

This year, the third component in our recycling programme is being introduced

so Titanic will now also separately recycle all food waste, around 45,000 tonnes a year of it!

“We have 153 rooms, plus our event spaces - The Rum Warehouse alone can be doing dinner for 500 every day – Stanley’s restaurant and the bar so obviously we generate a lot of waste,” explains Scott. “Even in-room waste like used teabags and coffee pods all adds up.

“That’s why we’re including everything in our recycling programme and joining forces with suppliers and companies who are already ahead of the game, so they can support us with our own sustainability process.”

Titanic uses a local waste management company, B&M, and Scott is keen for key team members to visit regularly and see exactly what happens to the waste once it leaves the hotel.

“One of the toughest challenges is in educating the team but I want everyone to fully understand what we’re doing and why so they can get behind it. It’s

all about training and that’s factored in the action plan too,” he adds.

Practically, food waste in kitchens is likely to be collected twice a week, on Mondays after the busy weekends and then again midweek. It’ll be put into a food caddy, similar to the ones households have only on a bigger scale, and then transferred to one of several 240-litre caddies. Once they’re full they’ll be locked and taken away, emptied, cleaned out and brought back for the cycle to start again.

Alongside recycling, the hotel is also committed to keeping the surrounding environment clean.

Titanic now hires a specially-made boat from local marine and engineering company Liverpool Water Witch who are world leaders in waterway cleaning. The boat, manned by Scott, does weekly clean-ups in Stanley Dock, scooping up debris on the surface and just below which is then processed and separated through the hotel’s waste disposal system.

He says guests appreciate everything Titanic does towards sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint, inside and outside on the water.

“There’s such a raised awareness from consumers now, and we respond to what people tell us. For instance, we were using a yoghurt pot in the restaurant which was plastic and a guest highlighted that so now we’ve started serving yoghurt in a melamine washable bowl instead. It’s just a little thing but it matters. If guests see something that doesn’t meet sustainability standards they’ll feed that back, and that’s good because it really helps us to improve.”

Phase One of the project is complete and the warehouse apartment homes have loft-style features such as exposed brick walls, cast-iron columns and double-height spaces. They are just across the dock from the Titanic Hotel and close to several hip cafes and creative businesses in the fashionable Ten Streets district.

Developers have released new images from inside the finished show apartments being marketed by Logic Estates. The four large dressed show apartments in the landmark building provide a homage to The Beatles, Liverpool’s most famous rock band, with different rooms featuring speciallycurated limited edition Beatles artwork. Tobacco Warehouse is being transformed into the city’s most exclusive new residential address providing 550 exceptionally spacious and airy one, two and three bedroom Manhattan loft style apartments, including penthouses, complete with 100,000 square feet of dock level commercial space and lifestyle amenities.

In order to dress the Tobacco Warehouse show apartments with Beatles artwork Stanley Dock Properties purchased many of the limited edition pieces at ‘Double Fantasy – John & Yoko’, a 2019 Beatles Exhibition that was held at the Museum of Liverpool. This exhibition drew on artwork from Yoko Ono’s own private collection, some of which had never been displayed before.

In dressing the four show apartments the developers envisaged that each could provide a funky Manhattan style pad for one of the “Fab Four” (John Lennon actually lived in New York). This creative inspiration has resulted in a series of visually striking, highly individual, dressed apartments that are rich in character and colours and combine iconic Beatles artwork with Art Deco style furniture, sculptural light fittings and vintage and contemporary accessories.

With apartments now available for immediate occupation and prices starting from £235,000 viewings can be arranged with Logic Estates, 0151 920 2404.
