Industry news Vroon names five newbuilds in China Vroon has announced that five of their newbuilding vessels were named during ceremonies held on November 25th, at Fujian South East Shipyard (FSES) in Fuzhou, China. The vessels christened were VOS Pride and VOS Prime, two multi-purpose platform-supply vessels (MPSV), plus three 60 meter field-support vessels (FSV) dubbed VOS Glamour, VOS Glory, and VOS Gorgeous. VOS Pride was named by Rie Nakajima, wife of Koichi Nakajima, Deputy President, Director and Executive Officer of Century Tokyo Leasing Corporation. The Godmother of VOS Prime is Ellen Niemeijer, wife of Ronald Niemeijer, Vroon Head HRM. The VOS Glamour was christened by Renza Stanga, aunt of Vroon’s Managing Director, Coco Vroon. The VOS Glory’s godmother is Carina Doggen, partner of Rudy
Snouwaert, who is Operational Accounting Supervisor at Vroon Ship Management B.V. and has been a Vroon employee since 1978. And, last but certainly not least, the VOS Gorgeous was christened by Mirei Notebaart, partner of Vroon’s Managing Director, Coco Vroon.
VOS Pride and VOS Prime VOS Pride and VOS Prime are the first MPSVs in a series of ten sister vessels that were ordered during 2012 and 2013 by Vroon Offshore Services. All ten MPSVs have full (under-deck) supply capabilities, including stainless-steel tanks for the carriage of methanol.
Additionally, these vessels also provide accommodation and work space for up to 40 staff members. Vroon says that the unique vessel concept is based on a free deck space of 720 sqm, which can also be equipped with a walk-to-work system or active heave-compensation crane, while leaving ample space for a variety of extra services. These new-generation vessels are based on a Khiam Chuan Marine (KCM) design. “KCM, Vroon’s Newbuilding Engineering Department, the world-renowned yacht designer KER Yacht Design & Engineering, and Force Technology in Copenhagen collaborated closely to fully optimize the design. This ensured favorable motion and sea-keeping ability and efficient fuel consumption (both in DP mode and during transit),” explains Vroon.
According to the company, to further enhance on-board comfort for clients’ personnel and crew members, the latest developments in computational noise and vibration analysis were incorporated. VOS Glamour, VOS Glory, and VOS Gorgeous are the first three vessels in a series of four FSVs being built at the Shipyard for Vroon. They feature a “revolutionary”, wave-piercing bow shape. All five vessels will be delivered to the company within the next few months, with the MPSVs to be operated in South-East Asia by VOS Singapore and the ERRVs heading for the North Sea, where they will be managed by VOS Aberdeen. The company has ordered a total of 22 offshore-support vessels at Fujian Southeast, with delivery between 2014 and 2016. Vroon’s two other vessels were named on November 24th at Nanjing East Star Shipyard in China.
Giant ‘Pieter Schelte’ on its way to Rotterdam A twin-hull behemoth; the world’s largest catamaran; biggest offshore vessel; the world’s largest crane ship. This is how the Pieter Schelte is being described. This giant vessel is now on its way to Rotterdam, the Netherlands, sailing from South Korea, where it was recently delivered. The 382 meters long and 124 meters wide multi-purpose vessel, owned by Swiss-based company Allseas, will be used for both the lifting and installation of oil platforms and jackets. The Pieter Schelte can also lay pipelines. This massive heavy lifter will be able to lift topsides weighing up to 48,000 tones. Positioned at the bow of the vessel is a slot, 122 meters long and 59 meters wide, where topsides are lifted using eight sets of horizontal lifting beams. Construction of the Pieter Schelte started at Daewoo’s Okpo, South Korea yard in 2011. At a maximum speed of 14 knots the completed
Tidal Energy Platform to Float Off Dutch Coast A group of leading offshore companies, including Bluewater, Damen, and Van Oord, have joined together to realize a unique floating tidal energy platform, which will be moored near Texel in the Wadden Sea and use the power of the tides to generate clean electricity. The platform is a trial for remote locations worldwide, such as islands in Indonesia, the Philippines, or the Pacific. It has an innovative modular design and uses a new type of permanent mooring lines. It will be the first time that a floating tidal platform is used for electricity production into the Dutch grid, and will be operational in the first half of 2015. “This platform can be shipped and installed anywhere in the world to provide clean electricity in remote areas
and small islands, replacing expensive and polluting diesel generators,” says Allard van Hoeken, Head of New Energy at Bluewater Energy Services. “This smaller test platform, while ready to use in remote locations, is also a stepping stone for our larger 2MW platform development. “Together with Bluewater we have adapted our modular barge product to a modular tidal power generation platform, which can be shipped as containers to any location in the world,” says Arnout Damen, COO of Damen Shipyards. “After container transport the modules can be assembled to shipbuilding quality vessels.” The unique cooperation between Bluewater, Damen, Van Oord, Tocardo, TKF, Vryhof, NIOZ, Nylacast, and TTC bundles extensive experience from the maritime and offshore industry in the field of design and operation of mooring platforms, shipbuilding, offshore dredging and installation, tidal turbines, power cables, anchors, research at sea, and synthetic materials.
vessel, which departed Okpo on November 17, 2014, is expected to arrive in Rotterdam at the end of the year under its own sailing power. Edward Heerema, president of Allseas, named the vessel in honor of his father Pieter Schelte Heerema. In Rotterdam harbor, Allseas has rented a deepwater site where the Pieter Schelte will be moored, and where the topsides lift system beams will be installed on the bows of the ship during the first months of 2015. A deeper pit was dredged there specially for the vessel. Offshore operations will begin in the summer of 2015, when the vessel will sail to the Norwegian sector of the North Sea to remove the Yme platform, spanning some 72 meters in length and 87 meters in height. The vessel will use its 59 meter wide slot between bows to float in around the Yme platform and then lift off the topside, weighing in at 13,000 tones, in a single piece in under a minute. Furthermore, the Pieter Schelte, which is able to accommodate a crew of up to 571 persons, will demonstrate its pipeline laying capabilities at the South Stream project in the Black Sea. There, it will lay almost 900 kilometers of offshore pipe to complete the second line of the pipeline. Also scheduled to begin in 2015 is the vessel’s decommissioning work on three
