A

fresh new month’s here, people, and so is a new cover page. A cover page that’s certainly bent the trend and you guys know why! For the first time in the history of Navyaata, here’s our first issue which features not one but three Navyaa Guys who need no introduction. Popular names in the field of media, here are Mahesh Shakya, Vinay Shrestha and Raymon Shrestha in a spread like you’ve never seen them before. Mahesh Shakya, who we know better as Karma, started his acting career with theatre plays and terms theatre to be his ‘true passion.’ Out of the abundant number of plays he has performed, the most prominent ones are Masterbuilder, Tara Baji Lai Lai, an improvised play based on each actor’s childhood memories, and Waiting for Godot, a Studio 7 production. Vinay Shrestha, yes Vinay, who we’ve spotted over a number of billboards and ads, pursued his acting degree from Kishor Namit Kapoor Acting Institute, Mumbai and one of his closest peer during his study there was the Bollywood heart throb, Imran Khan. Both of these talented actors made their debut in the Nepalese movie scene with 2008’s mega successful romantic flick, Sano Sansaar where each portrayed the role of a protagonist and an antagonist against their love towards a girl. Their second flick, First Love, just got released recently and seems to be doing quite well in the box office. As For Raymon, he began his acting career right from the time when he was a kid, playing child roles in many Nepali TV Serials such as Bhedi Dheki Bheri Samma, Roopmati and Sankalpa. He currently works as a RJ for the Kantipur FM where he hosts about 6 shows and is a co-proprietor of the Attic Bar as well.

hen questioned about their views on this particular photo shoot, all of them expressed it to be ‘extremely fun; it was a pleasant experience to relive those playful childhood days all over again. Oh! When we reached the fourth floor of World Trade Center complex in Tripureshwor for our interview, we found Ani Choying Drolma talking to few school students. With that radiant smile of hers, she kindly asked us to be seated and wait until she was done with the students and their questions. Afterwards, Ani Choying sat down with us to share her insightful thoughts and experiences. Born on June 4, 1971 to Tibetan parents, Ani never imagined being the person that she is today - the founder of the Nuns Welfare Foundation of Nepal, a renowned singer, a social activist and recently a writer. Having travelled to many countries across the globe for concerts, conferences, social activities and charity work, Ani has garnered international acclaim and fame. She has become a global cultural ambassador of Nepal and all Nepali people are proud of her accomplishments. Known for her ardor and tenderness, Ani calls Nepal her homeland, mindful of the fact that she has realized and achieved her success in Nepal. She is of Tibetan origin, but no matter which part of the world she goes to, people identify her as a Nepali. “My motherland is Nepal, fatherland is Tibetan” she puts it, correctly emphasizing that she is no less proud of her Tibetan heritage and culture than of her being a Nepali citizen. Going back to her childhood upbringing, Ani reminisces those bygone days, “I had a tough life with a lot of responsibilities from a very small age, from doing household chores, washing dishes to even changing my younger brother’s diapers but the most difficult thing was (silence…….) the aggression that I had to face from my father. My father was abusive and he used to beat me up and even my mother.”

“I never calculated and I don’t see a need to do so as I live my life based on what I do or accomplish on a particular day” Giving up a normal life that she was so used to, to become a nun, wasn’t an easy decision. She took the decision to avoid marriage and to get that little bit of freedom that she had never had. She enjoys the way of living as a nun. “I have gotten more freedom, respect and caring after becoming a nun than during the earlier phase of my life.” Ani Choying Drolma attributes her happiness and success to her teacher, Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, who helped her transform from a little troubled girl to a person with radiant personality and positive thoughts. “His love and guidance nurtured me in such a way that I’ve learned to live my life meaningfully.” Appointed as one of the organizing members of Gautam Buddha International Award, Ani Choying says she doesn’t know how much she has achieved in life and she reveals the reason “I never calculated and I don’t see a need to do so as I live my life based on what I do or accomplish on a particular day” How can one pass the opportunity to ask about Ani Choying’s musical

journey? Ani talks about her interest and devotion to music with that lively smile, “I was interested in music from a very young age and used to hum a lot and sing in the school. But I never really thought about pursuing it as a profession”. Teachings of Lord Buddha inspire her songs as her life is inspired by the enlightened one’s words. Bringing out her own album was just a coincidence. An American musician saw her singing spiritual songs at the nunnery. He approached her with a proposal to make an album out of her songs. Ani Choying first started recording melodious Chö songs in 1996 and her first album, Choying Drolma and Steve Tibbetts Chö, was released in 1997. Ani Choying humbly refused to receive the high honor conferred upon her by the Nepal government, citing that she hadn’t

She started her musical journey with just a simple thought of wanting to do something meaningful and simple in life without expecting any reward. But now, like every big ‘celebrity’ her life isn’t normal the way she would like it to be. Surprisingly, Ani Choying was hesitant to write it in the first place but after much persuasion from a French Publishing House, she eventually relented. She says, “Besides I was working with this kidney hospital project and I realized I have to have the economic resources to start the project. The book revenue was going to help in that case.” Her mother suffered from kidney failure. There were no proper kidney treatment facility in Nepal. She decided to work towards opening a good kidney hospital in Nepal. She has already donated 40,000 Euro from the sales of the book to Arogya foundation to establish the kidney hospital. Ani hopes to see herself engaging in a meditational retreat ten years from now. She opines that the most important thing for every individual is to be able to answer your own questions. As a departing thought, she tells us, “Everyone wishes to be happy and the path that you take to achieve ‘meaningful’ happiness should be without harming anyone or by any ill means.”

She starts her day at office with a “dhoop” and remembers her lords. You can easily find out that among all the gods she prays, Ganesh is her favourite and the reason is she finds him cute.

aveena Joshi is the Country Head of the Consumer Banking division of Mega Bank. She is one of the most successful women in Nepal. She manages five departments and commands a very powerful voice in the bank. Apart from being a professional banker, Raveena is interested in complimentary healing practices and the metaphysical world and its dynamics. She reads a lot on theses subjects and has taken quite a few trainings on such matters. She is an EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Practitioner, a Qualified Hypnotherapist (from the California Institute of Hypnotherapy) and a practicing Rebirther as well.

“School days were glorious and carefree. I have a lot of beautiful memories of days gone by but I guess that has a lot to do with the zest for life that I always had.”

Raveena has worked with Mother Teresa when she was in Calcutta in the house for young Children and the Old age home. Beside that, she has also worked as a nursing assistant with Tuberculosis and Leprosy patients. She loves poetry, philosophy and astronomy. She enjoys reading Nicholas Spark’s love stories and her favourite list includes “Bed of Roses.” She recommended that I watch “Meet Joe Black.” One thing that people hardly know about her is that she is an avid dancer. She loves to dance and goes clubbing whenever she gets a chance from her busy schedule.

Navyaata posted some questions and here’s what she said…. How do you describe yourself?

Mentally and emotionally strong, courageous, someone of high integrity and a person with a deep passion for life, this is me. I am a grateful person who realizes each day how lucky I am for all that I have but I do not take anything for granted. At times, I tend to worry a bit and get emotional too. I am someone who is not awkward to bring out the child side in me which is something that those who are close to me on a personal level knows and I can also laugh at myself so I am doing quite alright I think.

How did this spiritual journey of yours start and since when?

I have always been a very pious individual with a deep rooted understanding that there is a power way beyond our understanding that is constantly guiding us all and protecting each person. It is this belief that always made me want to continuously pursue and gain more understanding of what that ‘ENERGY’ is which is beyond what meets the eye and which cannot be seen or touched. So, as far back as I can remember, I have always been on this journey, as you put it, and the search continues……

And how does your spiritual part contribute to your professional life? In a huge way, I am guided by this path. It is the understanding that I have gained having been a seeker on the spiritual path that enables me to view things from a much broader perspective.

“I am not only a boss, colleague but also a friend for all and I have been able to establish meaningful relationships with those that I work with which is a very big contributor to creating successful and high performing teams.”

What are your strengths and weakness?

The biggest strength I have is the ability to not lose my internal balance and centre. Even when I do sway, I come back and sooner or later I find my centre. I consider this as a huge strength that I possess. As for my not so strong points, I tend to think too much at times. What suggestions do you bestow on to those rising women who aspire to follow your step?

2:00 pm- lunch time is a good time to eat and share talks with your colleagues. My lunch time is not fixed at all. I have it when I am hungry (with smiles).

How were your young academic days and do you feel your childhood days have been a building block in achieving your recent goal?

How do you compare the time when you were 16 years old to now when your son is 16 years old? There must be a vast generation gap, so how do you manage the variation?

Oh yes, very much indeed. The way our wonderful parents nurtured me and the values and the principles that they inculcated in me in my formative years for sure has made me the person I am today. And the school where I went to was an excellent school that taught me a lot about life and how to take care of myself as an individual. So yes, my childhood days and all that I have learned and experienced in those years definitely has had a huge influence in my being and who I am.

The time when I was 16 and now is definitely different but my son and I have a very open and communicative relationship. So I would like to think and, in fact, know that he perceives me not only as a mom who can add value to his life with the years I have lived but also as a friend who he can talk to about everything. Therefore, there exists no such gap. I believe he feels the same.

No, I did not dream of being a banker. However, when I entered this profession, I liked it very much. And if not a banker then, development work and serving the needy is what I would have fully dedicated my life too. I consciously still try and do that wherever I can in my own way.

Beside the Banker Raveena Joshi, you are a mother to two boys as well… so how do you balance being a mother with your professional life? Is it challenging?

What is your kind of Mr Perfect? And what qualities do you dig in a man?

My two wonderful boys are a huge strength to me even in my professional life. I suppose it is the values we inculcate in our children that shape their outlook. My sons are actually very evolved for their age and they understand the balance that needs to be maintained between work and personal time. So it actually is not that much of a challenge for me to manage my time between work and my children.

There is no Mr and Ms Perfect in my opinion. We all have our not so strong points so I don’t expect my man to be perfect but what is important is eventually, we realize that and are not afraid to show our vulnerabilities to those who truly matter. And I go for men who are able to see life beyond just the material and physical aspects that surround us. I like men who read and devote time to take care of themselves.

Did you always want to be a Banker? And if not a Banker then….

First and foremost find out what it is that you are really good at and what you truly enjoy doing. We all have our intrinsic strengths. Find a profession that compliments the strength and your inner drive. Then, give it all you’ve got. Work hard and smart with constant directed focus. If you do, then you will surely get there. That is all I have to say. There are no alternatives to hard work and no shortcut to success. Live meaningful lives, finding and being your true self. Lastly, I cannot end without wishing every woman all the very best. May you shine and may success and happiness be yours.

Heartiest Dine

I work in a bank, and I get home pretty late given the office closing time and Kathmandu’s public transportation. I had just gotten back from work. My husband was supposed to cook dinner, but seeing the house dark and quiet, I cringed with annoyance. I was resigned to preparing dinner by myself. I opened the door, and find my husband in a nice tux, standing like a waiter. He then switched on the lights, took my coat off and my bag away and motioned me towards the dining table. The table was filled with my favorite dishes. I was taken aback; was it our anniversary or some important day? Nothing. We had a nice, full dinner and he later told me that he had taken the day off to prepare the whole dinner. I was completely smitten. It may not be the most romantic moments to others, but the effort, the preparation and the thought of surprising me made it one of MY most romantic moments.

Simple Flashback Even though he’s my ex now, I can’t stop myself from blushing and smiling when I think about that specific day we spent together. It was just the day after my 12th board exams. Because of my exams, it had been really long since I had gone out. My boyfriend came over to my place; we planned to watch a movie sangai. We had a big discussion over which movie to watch and finally ended up watching Madagascar. When the movie was over we made pasta and enjoyed it. The date was simple but was special to both of us. Love Is In The Stars I had always loved stars and my boyfriend used to tag me romantic because of this factor but he didn’t believe in star, moon, prince, princess stories and he always told me that there are no fairy tales in life. It was few months back when my boyfriend rang me and wanted to take me out. It was already 6 in the evening so I knew my family wouldn’t permit me. But as he planned, he got some girl friends and they convinced my parents for a night party. They also promised my parents that we would be back by 10 PM. So I left with him. And he took me directly to his place, where he had arranged this beautiful candle light dinner. Everything had been done earlier because we had very limited time. And after the dinner, he took me to the terrace and it was really sweet to see this blanket laid out as a sheet on the ground and the pillows too. Then I knew what he was up to. We lied on the sheet and looked at the stars together while entwined in each other’s arms. Normally, he is stone-hearted but on that particular night, he just popped out all of his feelings for me and we both knew, our relationship was stronger than before. Surprises Showered My boyfriend rang me early in the morning that particular day. He said he wanted to meet me and he even told me he will come to pick me up. With my mind full of questions, I met him and he rode me towards the Airport. I asked him why we were going to the Airport and with a big smile; he showed me the plane tickets to Pokhara. He knew that I wasn’t allowed to spend the night out so he had managed to get the flight tickets for 8:00 AM in the morning and return tickets for 5:00 PM in the evening. I was so excited. As soon as we reached Pokhara, his friends were waiting to pick us up. We had a nice breakfast and after that, he took me shopping. And the bestest part was he still remembered that I desired to paraglide. So, right after the shopping binge, we went for paragliding. I was on cloud nine at that moment. That was not the last of it. After the thrill, he took me to a Spa. And lastly, we had an early dinner at a very fine restaurant. It was an ambush approach by my boyfriend and the most romantic date I ever had. A Picnic Date It had been six months since my boyfriend and I started dating. We are one of those couples who like celebrating monthly anniversaries. Since my boyfriend stayed in a hostel, it was difficult for us to meet often. On our seventh monthly anniversary my boyfriend gave me a really nice surprise. The morning of the anniversary he called me to wish me and said he was waiting for me outside my house. I thought he had just come to see me for a short time. So, I put on my clothes and went to see him. He told me to get on the bike, I asked him where we were headed for but he refused to give a straight answer saying it is a surprise. I just assumed he was going to take me to some restaurant. To my sheer delight, he took me to a really romantic spot that was a few kilometers away from Kathmandu. The spot was near a pond and the whole environment was so serene, away from the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu. To top off the surprise my boyfriend had packed a picnic basket for us. He set the carpet and the food complete with drinks. It was a very sweet gesture from him and I was so happy that I couldn’t stop smiling. We spent the entire day lazing around, eating good food and chatting. This particular date was so much different from the ones we normally had which included going for movies or eating out. Such is the magnetism of this couple, Navyaata celebrates the power of two with Dipesh Khattri and Masha Nazarova who confess their likes and dislikes of their spouse and dress each other according to their own choice. Dipesh Khattri, popularly known as Max, is the proud owner of Factory, the hip and happening eatery in Thamel. Born on July 21, 1984, Max’s success story is anything but common. He left school when he was in Grade Seven and thereafter took up odd jobs. After working at an import firm for four years, he was successful in owning one. Factory is his new venture and marks his entrance into the hospitality and tourism sector of Nepal. He now plans to enter the export sector. Besides business, Max loves watching movies and especially those that are based on real life incidents which are inspirational to him. His motto in life is to experience it in every essence and he seems to be doing just that. One thing that most of the people may not know about him is his current leisure activity: Making perfect Café Latte and Espresso. Masha: Nazarova grew up in Myanmar. She completed her high school in Moscow, Russia. It was in 2001 A.D. when Rosha came to Nepal and began pursuing her Bachelors degree in Padma Kanya Campus majoring in Psychology. After completing her undergraduate degree, she started working for a few bars and restaurants in Kathmandu. She, then, began designing jewelry, working mainly with silver and semi-precious stones. Absolutely loves dancing, especially, Salsa and spending quality time with friends and family. Rosha currently is working to make her jewelry business a successful venture. She wants to travel the world with her loved ones, and live a happy life with a baby. What is relationship to you? Max: Relationship to me, like to everyone else, is very special and

commands my respect. It’s the foundation of the life I am living. Masha: Relationship to me is completeness to life. It’s very important to be in a relationship with a very special person.

How had you imagined your girl/boy to be? Max: Honestly I had lot of expectations when I was single but

when I met the love of my life, trust me she was completely different from what I ever thought and imagined she would be like, she is incomparable and she brought me to a pause. Masha: I had always wanted someone like Max. He is exactly the type that I had always dreamt of.

What is your idea of Dream Date? Max: Dream date can be fancy like we all imagine, but for me it has

always been simple. I can be with her any where, away from work and cell phone, and that turns out to be a dream date. Lately it’s been difficult with too much work, but the plan is to take her of to the coast of Myanmar. It’s going to be homecoming for both of us in our own ways. Masha: My idea of dream date would be me and him alone in the coast of Myanmar. The place is really special to me and so is he.

What according to you is the best thing about being in a relationship? Max: Like I said, it’s the completeness, the feeling that you belong,

and the harmonising energy that syncs perfectly. I love the fact that you always have a shoulder to lean on when ever you are low. Masha: Well for me being with him during high and low is the best part of being in a relationship.

What did you see in her that made you realize that she was the one for you? Max: Her Charismatic smile. Must say I fell for it that very moment. Masha: I loved his thinking towards life, his maturity and his level

of independence.

One gift that she has gifted you that you cherish the most and the one that you have given her that she cherishes the most? Max: I keep losing stuffs, all the physical ones. The one I value is her undying support through everything.

Ever since Prabal Gurung hit it big in the international fashion scene, Nepali people have started taking note of this glamorous world. Fashion, which was perceived to be a silly art on which people waste money and time, is now being taken seriously. We have all heard of the Roberto Cavalli, the Karl Lagerfeld and Donatella Versace of the west, it’s time we give space to our very own Nepali designers and embrace their talent. Navyaata presents to you Tenzin Tseten Bhutia, Reena Adhikari, Nuzhat Qazi and Beena Ghale; four equally talented designers who have stormed into the Nepali fashion scene and changed it for good.

Tenzin Tseten is an experienced Fashion Designer who has demonstrated the ability to design any creative garment ranging from women’s wear to kid’s wear. Tenzin has five years of hands-on experience working at an export house. With a proven ability to design according to the company needs, deal with clients, identify potential opportunities, and develop innovative design as per client’s requirements Tenzin Tseten is one of our designers to watch.

When and why did you choose this profession? I was doing my graduation in Delhi. I did my B.Com hons. from Sri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi. It was in college I realized I wasn’t meant for that stream. I thought Fashion designing would be a good option for me and I think I am doing great right now. Any formal training? I did my Fashion and Clothing Technology from NIFT, Bangalore. Before that I did Basics in Designing from Fortunate Institute and Sketching from Design School, also in Bangalore. After finishing my design course from NIFT, I worked as an intern for Mano Viraj Khosla who is the official designer for Kingfisher. We are the ones who created the Kingfisher uniform (the red and yellow ones). After that I did a lot of shows including MTV Lycra awards. After coming to Nepal I took part in Lakme Nepal Fashion Week 2007. I was one of the finalists for a reality show called “Let’s Design” on Zoom.

Although at the moment I am more into couture, my basis has always been giving my designs an ethnic touch. Your inspiration? John Guialiano What do you have to say about the state of fashion in Nepal? I think it is moving in the right direction. At least there is scope for it right now. The number of students studying Fashion Designing is increasing. I even teach and I am so pleased with my students’ creativity. There are many Nepali people who want to dress following international trends but what they do is go abroad and get clothes from there. I wish they gave Nepali designers a chance. Challenges? There is this common perception of male designers being gay which is completely wrong.

What is unique about your creations? My designs are very much inspired from ethnic stuff. You can see a major influence of Buddhism on my work and my creations are very much in sync with Nepal.

Nuzhat is the one who brought a wave of change in the fashion scene of films with her costume designs for Sano Sansar. Intelligent, creative and with the poise of a lady, she has lately been busy styling for Kohi Mero, Bato Muni ko Phool and her latest project- Acharya. A versatile designer who does everything from modern trendy to period historical looks, Nuzhat has accomplished a lot in her short career.

When and why did you choose this profession? I have always had an interest in fashion. I went to Delhi in 2000 to study commerce but ended up taking Fashion Technology. In 2003 I graduated from Dignidy College, Delhi.

I think it can develop if there is cooperation from all sectors. There are lot of talented designers and students in Nepal but what is lacking is a proper platform. I request all celebrities to wear Nepali designer at least for their public appearances.

Any formal training? I did my advanced diploma course from Dignidy College, Delhi. After that I worked as an intern for six months. We did a couple of shows, I helped backstage and assisted a few designers. After that I returned back to Nepal and got into movies. Sano Sansar is the first movie that I styled for. My journey started from there.

Challenges? Lots of challenges. The skeptic look on the people’s face asking whether I would be able to do it or not was a challenge in itself.

What is unique about your creations? My designs are very wearable be it formal or street wear. I am inspired from our traditions and culture. Most of my designs reflect the fusion trend that we see in Nepal. A designer that inspires you? Versace What do you have to say about the state of fashion in Nepal?

Bina Ghale Designer 1 BINA GHALE

A former model, Bina is every bit the glam designer. Bina completed her B.Sc. in Fashion Designing from NIFT, Delhi. She worked as a fashion designer in India. She descirbes herself as an ordinary girl with lofty aims. She is currently busy with manufacturing garments and freelancing. She also takes time to share her knowledge with IEC students. Bina aspires to launch her own label in the future. Designers who take fashion as an art like Alexander Mcqueen and Manish Arora are her inspiration. She is also the proprietor of a textile factory When and why did you choose this profession? I was a model before but I couldn’t take it as a career. I wanted to be associated

with fashion designing as I thought I had the taste. Any formal training? I did my BSC in Fashion Designing from NIFT, Delhi. I have just started a factory in Lainchaur and I am busy with that at the moment. What is unique about your creations? More than creativity I am working for what sells in the market. Since, I am running a factory I have to think about quality and demand. I think I can deliver on both fronts. A designer that inspires you? Valentino. There is no one who understand a female’s body the way he does. What do you have to say about the state of fashion in Nepal?? At present we are see a shift in people’s taste. They are becoming more conscious and it’s good for us.

Challenges? Staying and studying in Delhi was the biggest challenge for me.

Rinaa Adhikari Designer 2 Rinaa Adhikari Freelance Designer

Reena Adhikari loves fashion. A freelancer at the moment, Reena is in the process of opening her own boutique. She has also designed for former Miss India Puja Chopra. Her sense of fashion is uber glam and she draws her inspiration from a lot of the western designers.

When and why did you choose this profession? Since my childhood I always wanted to do something creative. My dad wanted me to be a doctor but that was noy my cup of tea.I was a student of economics but four years ago I suddenly felt the need to change my stream. Fashion was my true calling. I wanted to go to Delhi but circumstances held me back. So, I joined INIFD (International Institute of Fashion Designing) here in Lazimpat. Currently, I am enjoying my work.

about the state of fashion in Nepal? Fashion is slowly but steadily evolving in Nepal. Earlier, we didn’t see any stylist being hired in Nepali movies but they have started doing so now. I think the fashion scene will have developed greatly in the next ten years. Challenges? Studying fashion in Nepal is itself a big challenge because there aren’t many opportunities and at times it is disheartening when people don’t respect your job.

Any formal training? I did my advanced diploma course from INIFD. I worked for Linen club for two years and now I am freelancing with magazines and personal clients. What is unique about your creations? My designs have always been inspired from Western culture. It carries more of a glam touch. I think my designs are casual yet cool. Your inspiration? Donnatella Versace.

Hair: Products used: Partial comb, curling iron, sonata styling mousse and hair spray.

Tips:

Begin with the under section of your hair, working your way to the top.

To get perfect ringlets, start with damp hair.

Apply styling gel or mousse so that your curls will form better and last longer.

Don’t brush your curls; otherwise you’ll end up with a frizzy mess. Instead, use your fingers to break up the curls.

Get Curling iron and make sure that all of the ends of that section are completely enclosed in the barrel.

Don’t scrunch your curls otherwise you could cause frizzing, instead cup the hair from below.

Open the iron after holding it for 10 seconds and release the curls. Processes with the other sections until all areas have been curled.

Make sure the make-up products used fits your skin.

Part a section to pouf your front hair. And at last, spray a light hold air to keep the curls in place.

AFTER

Make Up: Apply 43, Velvet touch foundation as the base. Dab 69, oil control Compact. Pat 55, eye shadow Palette and row it with 12, colorful eyeliner. Sweep over 11, Perfect Powder Rouge and lightly brush it off your cheekbones. Draw 02, Perfect Shade liner and Polish your lips with 44, ‘Pump’ and ‘Plump’ lip gloss as the finishing touch.

Sex has always been the immoral and awkward subject to talk about in Nepal. People exchange furtive glances and embarassed laughters when the discussion topic stumbles upon sex. Deep inside people have this nameless fear, grown out of ignorance, that talking about sex leads to you being a centre of mockery and disgust among your friends and family and thus they choose to avoid the topic altogether. Surely it takes a lot of valour for one to be able to speak boldly on the topic of SEX. Navyaata had an interesting and insightful tête-à-tête on sex with such six spirited undergraduate students. Participants: Bhrikuti Rai(21), Asmita Manandhar(21), Shekhar K.C.(23) and Ratan Karna(23) from School of Arts(KU), Mahesh Basistha(23) and Christina Pradhan from School of Science(KU).

Navyaata:

What would be your first reaction when someone utters the word sex?

Shekhar: If the person is my friend then I won’t feel

uneasy but if a stranger utters the word sex, then obviously I would feel weird.

Bhrikuti: I would simply ignore if I hear someone, whom

I don’t know, utter the word sex or probably I’ll start giggling if I’m with my friends.

Asmita: If someone utters the word sex in my friend’s

circle then obviously I would be curious. Who is talking about sex and may be I’d ask him/her ‘why are you talking about sex?’, but if the person is a stranger then I would rather remain mum on the topic.

Christina: If I’m with my friends and someone brings out

the topic of sex then I’d simply laugh but if I’m with my family then surely I’d wish to disappear from the scene altogether(giggles).

Navyaata:

Why do you think talking about sex is a taboo in Nepal?

Bhrikuti: From the very small age, we are taught to be tight lipped on a subject that has anything to do with sex. While we are educated about reproductive health in our schools, it is done so inadequately and uncomfortably that it is not surprising sex is still a taboo in Nepal. Christina: Our society is very conservative and talking

about sex is considered unethical. The reason behind this is either the lack of education, or the way people are educated in Nepal.

Mahesh: Well, most Nepali people are illiterate which

only helps to nurture negative perceptions towards sex. So, until and unless people are educated about sex, it will remain a taboo.

Shekhar: The way we are educated about sex and sexual

health is so restricted and formal that it is natural for people to be ignorant of sex or have wrong perceptions towards it.

Navyaata:

People are slowly opening up when it comes to talking about sex, what is your take on this?

Bhrikuti: It is true that gradually people are opening up on sex but we should know that getting exposed to sexual content does not mean one’s perception towards sex or sexual issues have changed or improved. I believe it will take some time before people get fully comfortable on talking about sex. Asmita: I think only people from the urban areas have started opening up and people from remote areas still shy away from the topic, when asked about sex. But the fact is that sex was never a problem or bad thing in our culture; remember those erotic paintings and sculptures in religious places. It is people, us, who made it a taboo in the first place. Mahesh: The way people are steadily opening up about

sex is due to the influence of western media. We talk about it not because we are taught about it but because we are exposed to sexual issues through international media such as T.V. channels, internet and even magazines. MTV has been a major influence.

Navyaata: What do you think about premarital sexual relationship? Is it good/ bad and why? Bhrikuti: It is ok as long as people have passed certain age and observe the right safety measures. The most important thing, whether it is pre-marital or post, is that it should be safe and healthy. Ratan: I don’t have any objection on pre-marital sex if it is done with mutual consent and understanding. Sex not only gives pleasure, but also releases your stress and makes people more open about sex, which opens the door for them to explore it and know more about it. Shekhar: I support pre-marital sex if it is based on mutual

consent and if proper safety measures are taken.

Navyaata: How can one be aware and alert on issues regarding sexual health and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)?

Bhrikuti: Access to reproductive health information should not only be made easy but also reliable at the same time, especially targeting young people, be it through schools, parents, media or sexual health help lines. Asmita: I think media has a bigger role to play if awareness among people regarding sexual health and STDs is to be spread. We should try to regulate sex industry and make it safe to ensure that no one is on the losing side Mahesh: We should talk about it with friends and family

without any hesitation; teach each other about sex health and STDs. Media should regularly promote and publicise sexual health, especially in rural areas.

Asmita: I do talk about sex with my parents, especially mom, which I think has made me very comfortable talking about sex with my sibling, friends, and my cousins. Christina: It is a big no-no in my family to talk openly about

sex. Although with my siblings and my friends, it is not a big deal to do so.

Ratan: In my family, we don’t talk about sex as such, but among friends, definitely we discuss it. I think it becomes awkward to talk about it with someone who is senior to you in age.

How do you take the subject of homosexuality?

Asmita: I think homosexuals are in no way different than us, except for their sexual orientation which shouldn’t be a reason to discriminate against them. Mahesh: If they like each other and want to live

together then why should we stop them? I don’t believe in those who say homosexuality is against law of the nature

Ratan: If two people like each other and want to be together regardless of their sexuality, they should be allowed to do what they want, until and unless it harms others. Shekhar: I am undecided on whether homosexuality

should be accepted or not in our society

Sex, which used to be discussed only behind closed doors, is slowly but steadily finding its way in classrooms and group discussions. The youth of today do not shy away from conversing about it with their friends. This was not the case few decades ago. Nonetheless, there are myriad of views on sex. Some youngsters are okay with the notion of pre-marital sex while others still find it difficult to accept the idea. ome find it repulsive, others think of it as a part of the biker culture. Call them rebellious or true form of self expression, tattoos have taken the world by storm. Ed Hardy’s tattoo arts are admired by many and are featured in merchandises. What many may not know is that tattoo was born out of mere accident. The story goes like this. A person had a small wound and he rubbed it with his hand that was dirty with soot and ashes from fire. After the wound healed, it left a permanent mark. That was some 5000 years ago.

Even though its history goes way back in time, tattoo has yet to gain social acceptance. Generally, when people think of tattoos, they think of biker boys and rockers, their body adorned with images of skulls, snakes; basically anything reflecting evil. People with tattoos are stared upon, even frowned at. The misconception that most people in Nepal have is that tattoos are part of western culture and that decent people should stay away from getting their bodies permanently inked. Many of us are unaware of the tradition of tattooing in our country.

Tattoos have long been a part of rituals in many communities of Nepal. In Newari tradition, it was believed that in order to ward off evil and sickness, a person should get their body tattooed. Newari women usually made tattoos in their wrist and ankles. To understand this traditional art form better we got in touch with Ram Maya Maharjan, 78, a native of Gwarko and a social worker.

Ram Maya Maharjan also known as Ram Maya Aji (Grandma) got her two tattoos on her legs when she was eighteen. A cousin sister was a popular tattoo artist in the neighborhood and made the tattoos for her. Maya Aji still remembers the afterhours when her feet swelled up twice its size and she could barely walk for two months. Even in such a dismal situation, she didn’t regret having the tattoos done. She tells us it was the trend during her youth. Almost every one she knew had gotten a tattoo. Maya Aji’s tattoo is a traditional Newari style window with peacock on the top. It was the most popular design of that era. During that time it was the women who got the tattoos done. Many like Maya Aji inked their wrists and ankles. “We found our ankles the perfect place for tattoos because while donning our traditional Newari attire, our ankles are revealed. And we believed that getting a tattoo in our ankles would bring us a lot of attention from men”, says Maya Aji with a shy smile on her face. Her statement is in stark contrast to the situation of today where girls are not encouraged to get body art done. Back then parents had no objection to tattoos as they carried religious and cultural significance. According to Maya Aji, there were very few men who tattooed their bodies. Those who did use to ink Krishna’s name on their hands. The technique that Maya Aji’s cousin used for tattooing is completely different from the modern day tattoo technique. Aji says, “My cousin would collect the black dust left on the lanterns and mix it with wheat flour. She would use the mixture as carbon copy to draft the design. Once the design was made then she would use a needle and jab it on the design.” This is how tattoos were made back then. The tattoo tradition abruptly came

to an end after Maya Aji’s generation. She says,”All of a sudden people stopped making them.” Maya Aji blames it on the effect of westernization. The tattoos that today’s youngsters sport are vulgar. They represent western art and western culture. That is why today’s parents discourage their children from tattoos. People today have no clue about the traditional Nepali tattoos. Maya Aji, unlike many parents today, supports youth who want to get tattoos. She opines,” Tattoos are beautiful and they last with you even after death. I have no problem with youths getting tattoos but I just wish that they gave more attention to our traditional tattoos. It is sad to see one of our cultural art form dying with the old.” Tattoos are a unique way of self expression. They have found a huge fan base among the Nepali youth. While the western tattoo images are abundant, we do not see anyone sporting a traditional Nepali tattoo. For a country with a rich tattoo tradition, it is sad to see the traditional art form being neglected for the foreign images. Navyaata calls on all the young tattoohopefuls to give continuity to our traditional Nepali tattoos.

Friends, they say, are the gifts of god. But very few of us are lucky enough to be bestowed with truly good friends. That is why it is wonderful to come across a group of friends who have stuck together through thick and thin. Their popularity and fame hasn’t affected their friendship. They are friends on camera and off as well. Navyaata explores the unmistakable bond among four friends - Namrata Shrestha, Raymon Shrestha, Mahesh Shakya (Karma), and Vinay Shrestha. 64 NAVYAAT • BHADRA 2067

THE MEETING AND FIRST IMPRESSIONS

I

t was work that brought Namrata Shrestha, Vinay Shrestha, Mahesh Shakya(Karma) and Raymon Shrestha together and it is passion for their art that still binds them together. Although Vinay and Namrata met at a marriage ceremony for the first time, it was only after shooting a TV commercial together that they got to know each other well. Likewise, Namrata met Raymon in a music video shoot. When this lovely actress saw Raymon for the first time, she was not impressed at all. She confides, “I didn’t like his attitude at all but after knowing him personally I have come to really like him.” However, Raymon had a completely different impression of Namrata. He found her a simple and down-to-earth person. He remembers having small conversations with her and, thereafter, bumping into each other at a number of places and finally exchanging numbers. Their first meeting may not have been a pleasant one but their friendship grew with time and after all these years they still remain the best of friends. Namrata and Karma initially met while auditioning for Sano Sansar, the debut movie of Namrata, Karma and Vinay. The moment she saw Karma act she said to herself that no one could suit the role of Ravi (the lead character of Sano Sansar) better. So, she recommended him to Alok Nembang, the director of the movie. After meeting on the sets, Karma invited Namrata to watch a play “Tara Baji Lai Lai” where he was cast to play the role of a kid. Seeing Karma’s clean shaven look and his act as a kid, Namrata and her friends were all skeptical of her first co-actor. “I found him a little weird at the time,” shares this sassy actress. But all that is a story of the past. After shooting Sano Sansar together, the three young actors bonded well. Raymon who was by then a close friend of Namrata was introduced to the gang and since then these four friends have remained intact.

layful like kids when together they never let go of an opportunity to pull each other’s legs. This way they resemble high school students. Like in every group dynamics, there is an implicit role assigned to each friend. Vinay is the elder brother of the group. Labelled “stylish” both by Raymon and Karma (to which Namrata squints and sneers), Vinay is the rock star of the group. They may call her “chuchi” but all of them agree that Namrata is the best actress there is in Nepali cinema today. “I have done four movies till date and she is the only actress I was comfortable working with”, shares Karma. The guys are all praises for her acting skills. But Namrata gives the credit to Raymon who made her rehearse time and again. “Raymon has always encouraged me to do things I would never have dreamt of doing. He was the one who got me into RJing and acting”, says Namrata. Most of us may not be familiar with the fact that Raymon as a child had acted in more than a dozen movies. His experience helped Namrata a lot who had no idea about movie making and acting prior to Sano Sansar. The husky voiced RJ is admired by his friends. A good person, cooperative and supportive are the terms that define Raymon according to his friends. There is no denying the love and admiration these friends have for each other. They give honest opinions to each other, they help out during tough times and they implicitly trust each other. Perhaps this is why their friendship has prospered even after the rigors and tensions of starting a business venture together.

ut there are things that they would change of each other. Namrata’s habit of showing up late annoys the guys. About Vinay, it is his habit of correcting people that his friends can’t stand. Even when drunk Vinay has to correct people. Similarly, they are irked about Karma’s tendency to get aggressive over small issues. Vinay recalls an incident where Karma lost his cool. “We were returning from Sano Sansar’s shoot and without any reason a traffic police created a scene and shouted at us. I didn’t realize when Karma got out of the car and started arguing with the traffic guy. He is unpredictable”, shares Vinay. Known as the tubelight of the group, Raymon doesn’t get things easily. It takes time for him to understand matters and during crucial times it gets on Namrata’s nerves; because of this they end up getting angry at each other.

owever, friendship is something that matters to all of them. The things that they cannot tell their parents they share among themselves. They all believe that friendship is a bond that needs to be maintained regardless of where friends reside. They believe without

hen asked about their friendship day plan for this year, they said they would be walking the green carpet together for the premiere of Karma and Vinay’s new movie “First love” that is set to release on August 6. Unfortunately, Namrata would miss all the fun as she would be busy shooting for her new movie in Singapore. While this is not their idea of celebrating friendship day, they dream of a day when they are all free from work, party all night and the day after, and sing and dance like crazy without any disturbance from outsiders.

amrata, the lone girl in the group, is the bully. She doesn’t miss having girlfriends as Vinay, Karma and Raymon act as her girlfriends when she needs them. When she has to go shopping or need advice they are always there enacting the role of perfect bfs.

nlike celeb frenemies there is no backstabbing among these four friends. When one of them gets an offer the other one is quite happy and excited about the opportunity. “Maybe because we started out together we feel like we are a family and we look out for each other”, Vinay says. Before they opened Attic together they were into the whole partying scene. Vinay and Namrata were the ones who used to drag Karma and Raymon to clubs. But guys are not allowed near Namrata. She doesn’t mind it as she is more than happy to be in her friends’ company.

hen asked about the gifts they have given and received over the years, Namrata is quick to reply. “Mahesh gave me a scrap book with pictures that brought back a lot of memories.” Namrata considers it one of her best birthday gift. She has a special place in her heart for the watch gifted to her by Raymon. She didn’t use to care much about time and Raymon decided to give her a watch thinking it would change her habit of being late.

ungee jumping, crazy bike rides and partying are some of the things that they have done together. But the craziest moment they had was when they were in Pokhara for the promotion of Sano Sansar. The guys wanted to check a dance bar and since Namrata was the only girl in the group, they couldn’t leave her back either. She was included in the plan and curious that she is, she was more excited about going to the bar than the guys. Scared of being discovered she covered herself under a jacket and a cap and set out for her adventure. Everything was well, they were not discovered by the people though few of the dancers recognized Vinay. But Namrata was caught offguard when the dancers started dancing to the tunes of a song that Namrata had shot a long time ago. After that she says she couldn’t stay at all. This is one of their

Steve Jobs is the CEO of Apple Inc. His second stint in Apple - he was originally fired in 1985 - was marked by phenomenal success of the ‘i’ products - imac, ipod, iphone and ipad. He is the most successful CEO in the world and has taken Apple from facing an existential crisis to being the most valued technology company in the world. Steve Jobs gave a very inspirational speech during his commencement speech in Stanford University in 2005. We have reproduced his speech here as part of our inspirational speech series. I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That’s it

No big deal. Just three stories. The first story is about connecting the dots. Macintosh 128K, first ever Mac released in 1984 I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out? It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: “We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?” They said: “Of course.” My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college. And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents’ savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn’t see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I didn’t have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends’ rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example: Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn’t have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned

about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can’t capture, and I found it fascinating. None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later. Again, you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

My second story is about love and loss. Jobs and Wozniak 1975 I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating. I really didn’t know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down – that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over. I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple’s current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

“So keep looking until you find it, Don’t settle.” I’m pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn’t been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it.

My third story is about death. He looks old and thin When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something. Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. “No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there.” About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn’t even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor’s code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you’d have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes. I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was

sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I’m fine now. This was the closest I’ve been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept: No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true. Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960’s, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions. Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. Thank you all, very much

was walking down the streets of New Road. The cobblers with their treasure boxesnext to Photo Concern grabbed my attention. I observed the cobblers for a while. Some cobblers were talking in loud voices, others were in groups gossiping, and some were busy talking in their mobile phones. There was one person who was just busy with his work. He was polishing the shoes and seemed quite merry in his work. I didn’t want to disturb a person who was busy in his work. I decided to approach other cobblers for Navyaata’s ‘Make a Wish’ program. My enthusiasm was somewhat dampened by the reception by the cobblers. Most of them turned their backs at me when they knew that I was from a magazine and said “go away, we are not interested”. With such a humbling, I decided to break my fist rule not disturbing someone who was busy with his work. I went back to the first cobbler who was still engrossed in his work.

Min Bar Ramtel 56 has been doing this job of cobbler for the past 22 years and he in fact loves his job.

His name is Min Bar Ramtel. I approached him and told him about Navyaata’s “Make a Wish” feature. He smiled but was a bit hesitant and somewhat tentative. He shared that he had to first finish polishing the boots that he was working on. So, we waited till he completed the task.

1 Min Bar Ramtel 56 has been working as a cobbler for the past 22 years and he loves his job. He leaves home at 9 in the morning. The bus ride and walk takes him 2 hours to reach New Road from his resident Zharuwa Raashi. He works from 11 am to 6:30 pm in the evening and by the time he reaches home, it is almost 9 PM. Ramtel tells us that he is an expert in polishing and shining shoes. He also confides that he does not prefer customers who approach him to mend the broken heels. Ramtel is hardworking and sincere. He earns 300 rupees to 500 rupees a day. He enjoys what he does. He told us that he loves winter season more than summer because during winter time everyone wears shoes. As a result, business is good. in the summer, people wear slippers and hence business suffers (he shares this with a smile). Just like his personality, Ramtel’s demands and wishes were simple too.

He didn’t wish for budget-breaking things. “I would like to have a Dhaka topi, it has been a really long time that I haven’t had a nice one,” he intimated. He also wished for a white sleeved shirt and a “Fit Rite” shoe. The particular brand of the shoe intrigued me. “Why Fit Rite?”, I asked. Ramtel shared, ‘“Fit Rite” shoes are very good in quality but I cannot afford them. This is one thing I wish to possess (with smiles). So, we proceeded towards putting a smile on his face by fulfilling his wishes. We first went to purchase a Dhaka Topi. He chose a black hat. We asked him to also get a nicer one which he could wear on special occasions. After that, we got him a nice sleeved shirt and finally, we reached the “Fit Rite” store. We let him choose a shoe and, with all smiles, he got one. With that, he said, “I at last have a nice shoe and I love it. Thank you Navyaata!” We offered to buy him a hearty lunch but he insisted on leaving saying, “I still have many shoes left to polish, I have to finish them before the customers arrive.” So, this was the end of our meet. We took our leave. Just as he was leaving, Ramtel said, with a big smile in face, “thank you again!” We left impressed with Ramtel’s dedication to his work

My Story: Fash NO PLAYING WITH HEELS It was my friend’s birthday and like we had planned, all of us friends were dressed in style, both pretty and trendy. I wore a red stylish dress and, to complement the dress, I put on a red sandal. To my disappointment, at the very last moment, I noticed a long white scratch in the sandal’s heel. And it was quite visible. I started to panic but there was nothing I could do about it. It was too late to go shopping. And then, one of my friends came up with this idea of coating that scratch with a red nail polish. While I wasn’t totally sold on the idea but since I had no other option I decided to go with it. Everything was going fine and no one seemed to notice until the very last moment when I saw the white scratch totally visible. The part where I polished had faded away. It was looking ugly and I felt everyone’s eyes were on my heels. Never again will I follow stupid techniques. Sumita Dangol, Kumaripati

BUTTONS UNBUTTONED It was a family gathering. My mother wanted me to wear this white dress which she really liked but when I wore it I found that it had become too tight. I didn’t want to wear the dress but my mother compelled me to wear it. So I ended up donning this beautiful yet uncomfortable outfit. All of our relatives came to the gathering and we all sat together in the dining table talking and sharing our stories. Then, all of a sudden, my elbow hit a spoon and the spoon fell under the table. I stooped down to get the spoon; As I did so, I felt something coming loose near my stomach. To my horror, I noticed that the main button near my stomach had come off. I couldn’t do anything but put my hands on that part. I was stuck there for more than 5 minutes and, finally, I called my mother over for help. Afterwards, I layered myself with a nice trench coat. Finally the bus came. I somehow got into the crowded bus, and while in the micro, the conductor sarcastically said, “The fashion nowadays!” (Aj kaal ko fashion, kasto kasto cha!) I thought maybe he was interpreting the weariness of my outfit. As I reached my college, I dashed for my class, and as I was entering the classroom, the teacher asked me to go to the bathroom and change my pants. I had worn my pants the wrong way. Everyone was in their own world of fun, dancing, shouting; some were on the couch drinking and others were watching the dancers. It was a Friday night. I was watching over the people on the dance floor. The young guys and the girls were all dressed up in a way that reflected the latest styles of the celebrities. But on one corner, I saw this guy wearing a baggy jeans which seemed like it might almost fall down if he shaked his body a bit more. And the real gross part was the Red Roober underwear he was wearing. It was visible to everyone. And the girls at his side were full of chuckles. Anonymous

TOO SHORT TO BE CUTE It was one of those days when you wake up early just so you have more time to dress. I had put on a short, flowy skirt with this cute top that I had recently bought. And the effort seemed to have paid off, when I witnessed people actually turning their heads to get a glimpse of me. I walked to the bus station with a confident smile, and was waiting for the bus, when an elderly lady came up to me and said, ‘Honey, don’t you think the dress is a little too short for you?’ I looked down and noticed that the end of my dress was caught in my under garments, and that I had unconsciously been revealing my entire thigh to the whole world. After some tea and small talk, I stood up to go to the restroom. When I started walking, my boyfriend’s mother called me and came along to the restroom. I thought she also needed to go but later I came to know that the back part of my sari was starting to fall down. It was such a Sari blunder. o girls get carried away in shopping! What’s the big deal? The necessity to shop is a natural urge, more so in the case of us girls; the amount of money you spend on any piece depends on your talent for using that piece well. Purchasing a good piece that will cost you a little more is like wearing a good nail polish. You buy a good colour AND a brand so that your nails do not become a disaster, and secondly you apply it not once but twice or thrice so that it stays on your nails for a long time. Buying clothes that cost a little more than needed is smart only when it is a good investment, where you outwear the price, and when, of course, it looks great on you. But the real situation is, WE ARE IN NEPAL, where everything is religiously cheap. So it is understandable that people get carried away, when everything seems to be a shopping away. So my little minions, listen to me, and no one else, and shop away, shop away.

Looking for a dress to wear in my brother’s graduation- Oh!! This reminds me of the times when I had to shop in a very short notice, which I completely and utterly detest. I had already planned on wearing this shoulder puffed, body hugging, sequined dress that I was so in love with. But my mother thought it was a little too much for an event, which cherished my brother’s success. Given I had only a day’s time, I was rummaging through stores after stores, when I finally landed in Taxxi. It was there, my eyes caught this Royal, Green Maxi Dress! It was something I had seen on Angelina Jolie, only this one was something I could afford. Better yet, it had these colourful jewel stones by the neckline that made it even more chic. Perfect! This could be it! Subtle, yet out there! But again, only two days in Kathmandu and my skin tone had already darkened. The dark green was certainly not a match for my skin tone. Gasp! Did I mention, Angelina Jolie wore something Just Like That? Oh well! With a sulky face, I returned the dress to the sales lady. Then to my surprise, the lady brought out the same dress in a ‘Gwen Stefani’ like leopard print, which only made it more fab. And like good things happening to good people (Hah!), the dress fit me like a glove. And the rest as they say is history.

Blessed with a unique voice that is bound to touch anybody’s heart, the singer behind the heavenly acoustic compositions shares his story.

obin’s songs are known to make people cry but when you meet him in person all you can do is smile. His simplicity emanates from everything that he does. Whether it is the faded jeans and simple tee he wore for the interview or his conversational manner, the soulful singer is anything but pompous. His music has touched the hearts of many in the country and abroad alike.

Born in Bubahal of Patan on April 16, 1976 bobin (yes the first letter is in lower cap!) was glued to music right from his childhood. . Having listened to all genres of music as a child, his musical inspirations range from the East to the West. Legendary reggae artist Bob Marley and Jazz master Bob Dylan may have played a greater role in his choice of music but our very own Narayan Gopal has equally inspired him as an artist. His music reflects this cultural mix of inspiration. Although bobin started playing guitar at a young age, it was only at sixteen when he was finally gifted a guitar by his uncle after passing S.L.C exams. Reminiscing the particular moment brings an almost childlike glow to this 34 year old singer’s face who used to practice on his friends’ and cousins’ guitars before that. He shares, “It was such an exciting day for me. After years of nagging others for guitars I finally got my own. It was a beauty and I just couldn’t get enough of it. I remember playing it all day and night. It made me feel great.” Years of practice has paid its due. Most loved for his acoustic songs, Bobin’s fingers are capable of working wonders on the strings. AN EVENING WITH bobin complements his moving voice beautifully. This talented crooner does not have a formal training or guidance as such, which may come as a surprise to many of his listeners. Music to bobin is an internal feeling which cannot be forced. Staying true to this opinion, bobin doesn’t stress over recording the next album as soon as one is completed. Only when he is truly inspired and has something satisfactory he goes ahead with it. He was once told by his brother that while science seeks to prove what is already existent, art tries to create what is not there. Keeping that philosophy in mind bobin has been working hard to create art through music. With seven acclaimed albums to his credit bobin has been creating art and that too a beautiful one. His first album “Heroes of dream bobin ” was released in 1996 with limited edition. Soon after that he left for Japan for further studies. But unlike other musicians who discontinue their music once in foreign soil, bobin begged to differ. While in Japan his second album “Samsara bobin” was released by Monsoon records in 2000. There after bobin formed a band “bobin and the Mantra’ which comprised of four members including two Japanese musicians. In 2001 an album under the same name was released subsequently in Japan and Nepal. After that, more albums followed. bobin and the mantra’s album “Soul Rhythm bobin and the Mantra” was nominated for Golden Glove awards (Taiwan’s highest musical accolade) making them the first foreign band to be awarded this honour. After this bobin came out with 3 more solo albums which were all well received. bobin was successful in carving a niche for himself in Japanese music scenario with his unique voice. Leaving Japan behind, he is now with “The Himalayan Connection” which was formed in 2008. With Saroj on drums and Alok on bass and bobin on vocals and guitar, this band was created with an inspiring slogan “jamming for freedom”. In sync with their slogan, the trio welcomes any musician who wants to perform with them.

He finds solace there. Besides music, skateboarding and cycling are his second passion. Nothing about bobin is stereotypical, from his attitude on life and music to his ideology. At a time when people were scared to sing in English, bobin embraced it. Even though his musical journey has been a happy one it is not without its share of downs. “Financial, physical and emotional difficulties are part of a musician’s life,” opines bobin. But these difficulties only strengthened bobin as an artist. Looking back at his career, bobin has no complaints, nor any regrets. With an inimitable personality and a distinct voice, bobin has been touching hearts worldwide. For those of you waiting desperately for bobin’s new album there is a good news. bobin is planning to come out with an album which will be a tribute to Narayan Gopal. There is no doubt this album will carry a soul like all of his previous creations that have left listeners wanting for more.

Having stayed in Japan for over a decade it is no wonder that bobin decided to feature Japanese cuisine for his favourite food. Since he was confused as to which specific dish to choose we did it for him. Yakiudon, a thick, smooth, white Japanese noodles eaten with a special sauce, meat and vegetables is simple to make and a popular dish in Japan. It can be made within few minutes and you can use whatever ingredients you have in your fridge for this simple yet sumptuous meal.

usic happened to him at a very early age. Robin Tamang, with unbeatable confidence and an indomitable attitude, started his music journey with F-Troop in his High School. Ever since, Robin Tamang has changed the stagnant Nepali music industry with his Rock Music. Robin also judges the Sprite Band Challenge and owns a restaurant (The Bamboos) in Thamel. Very interesting and imaginative, we can see his creativity flow even in his dress up.

Navyaata: What is your idea of Friday Night? Robin: For me every night is a Friday Night. I hang out with friends, I go visit their restaurants and at times enjoy a drink. Well my idea of Friday Night is having fun with friends, it’s about enjoying the ambience and the company. Navyaata: Any wild Fridays that you have had? Robin: When I was doing my college in Canada, Fridays used to be loud and wild, but there always used to be a limitation. I stay out of trouble and never like getting into messy situations. Navyaata: What is you favourite hangout? Robin: Nepal it has to be The Thamel Mall, I meet interesting people there and I enjoy it, and internationally I enjoy Canada.

Wake up at 5 AM in the morning and take a bus to Kavre, the drive is 3 hours long. Make sure you carry water and something to eat as there aren’t any good place to eat on the way. The 3 hours drive to The Last Resort will take you through beautiful hillsides and villages. Once you reach the resortand after you have freshened up, talk to the game masters and move for the adventure sports that you have chosen. The lunch is served at around 1 PM in the afternoon. After the lunch, take a short walk to the village nearby or rest in your tent. The evening time is the best time in the resort as you can hear the insects amidst the cool breeze. Also, the restaurant is very lively during the evening, enjoy the fun time with others who have come to the resort. If you prefer to rest, you can retire early to your tent. Vata Diet: ( people with dry skin, brittle hair, thin body frame, prone to

constipation, restlessness, talkative and non relaxed attitude)

EAT:

Food that is heavy to calm their nature, so nourishing, warm, liquid, littleoily and heavier food is recommended.All kinds of squash (farsi, ghiraunla, lauka etc), meat soup, rice, oats and whole grains and whole milk are good.Ripe and sweet fruits like mangoes, bananas, and avocados are good, and so are citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruit are in wintertime. Spices like nutmeg, cumin, black pepper,ginger, cinnamon are very good . Ghee is extremely good for vata individuals.

AVOID:

Food that aggrevates vata qualities, such as dried chips, refrigerated sweets like icecream and frozen yoghurt, excessive amount of white flour and sugar, and raw vegetables. Processed and food with preservatives etc are bad for vata indiiduals.

Pitta Diet: ( people with good digestion, strong appetite, intolerance of heat , oily skin prone to pimples, gets angry and agitated quickly) EAT:

Heavy, nourishing, naturally sweet and cooling food to help balance the fire and water qualities of Pitta dosha. Vegetables such as lauka,cucumbers, beans, rice, whole grain oats and barley are good.Cooling fruits like watermelons, papayas , and pineapples are very good for them. Spices like coriander,cardamom and fennel recomonded.

AVOID:

Citric fruits, unripe fruits, pickles and similar kinds of food that are rich in acidity and salinity adds to the fiery qualities.So fermented food, alcohol, caffeine, and vegetables such as hot peppers and brinjals, are not very good for pitta as they are sharp and pungent.

Kapha Diet: (people with strong body frame, tendency towards gaining weight, lethargy, normally thick skin and thick hair, strong nails, slow and relaxed attitude) EAT:

Light vegetables such as spinach, mustard greens, asparagus, cabbage and carrots,light meat soup, lighter grains such as wheat, and food that is low on oil and fatis good for Kapha individuals. Fruits like apples, different kind of berries like (strawberries, blueberries and cranberries) andpomegranate are recommended.Spices such asmustard, fenugreek, black pepper and ginger, and honey are very good.

AVOID:

Heavy vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, tofu, paneer, tomatoes etc. Food with excess salinity, with sugar (specially refined sugar), and bleached flour are not recommended. Sweet, too ripe and juicy fruits are not so good for them.

What ‘s good for all the doshas: Mung soup Mung and rice khichri. Buttermilk Milk boiled with spices like saffron, cardamom, black pepper and nutmeg Warm, well-cooked vegetables with digestive spices like cumin, coriander etc Light meat soup. Fresh fruit juice .

Always remember, even when we are eating according to our dosha type we have to make sure whatever we are eating is seasonal, organic and preferably locally produced. Stay away from processed food (e.g., western-style fast food), food with preservatives (e.g., instant noodles) and (of course) stale food. Food has to be fresh, nourishing and energizing, well cooked and with moderate amount of spices because they help in digestion. Most of the food are healthy but not for everyone. Know your body type and structure your diet and balance your body. And whether you are cooking for yourself or for your loved one put your best wishes, love and care . and enjoy your meal. In the movie, Katherine Heigl plays the role of a professional bridesmaid who has willingly donned on some pretty horrible dresses in order to “be there” for her friends on their special day. In fact she has 27 of them. Usually, I am quite envious people’s overflowing wardrobes in movies but it is an exception in this case. This movie is about love, about wedding, chick-flick romance and about the 27 dresses. It is the modern interpretation of the classic boy gets away story. Katherine Heigl gets it right. She is obsessed with her wedding dress while the bridesmaids accept the supporting cast role including the typically less than fashionable bridesmaid dress. In this movie, Heigl proves there are indeed 27 ways to look pretty. She gets her turn at centre stage and she poses her way through. The viewers will indeed love this movie especially the way she carries off 27 dresses.

The devil wears Prada stars Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, a recent college graduate who goes to New York City and gets a job as a co-assistant to powerful and demanding Fashion Magazine Editor Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep. You watch this movie and you will writhe with envy watching as Anne Hathaway, the style challenged lackey to Meryl Streep, sheds her maid persona for that of a smugly preening style princess. Some will likely fall under the spell cast by David Frankel, the Director of “The Devil Wears Prada”. The movie is not only summed up by a parade of Gucci, Pucci, Dolce & Gabbana and Prada, but also by breezier labels like Chloe, Marc Jacobs, and Marni which are desired by young trendsetters but are often in scant evidence on screen. Many designers allowed their clothes and accessories to be used in the film, making it the most expensively- costumed film in history.

A

professor of English language, an author and an actor, Sanjeev Upreti is as renowned for his creative genius as for his directive and descriptive writing. His first novel, Ghanchakkar (Revolving Mind), was critically acclaimed in 2007. The Nepali novel encompasses “an unconventional professor whose madness reflects the insanity of society he lives in.” However, many critics implied the professor, who is the narrator also, to be none other than Sanjeev Upreti himself. As a young boy, he lived a lazy childhood as a goat herder in Jhapa playing flute to himself in the fields. It was family pressure alone that obliged him to come out of his comfort zone and leave home for higher studies. The lazy herder went on to receive a Fulbright scholarship to State University of New York, Binghamton in 1994 and Brown University where he received his Ph.D. But the writer confesses that he craves for a life like that of his childhood. “I never had any ambition to be a writer or a professor,” says Sanjeev reflecting on his life so far. “Even today, I have no future plans. Living in the moment is what I believe in,” shares the writer. His articles are featured in Kantipur daily entitled ‘Bhetghat ra gufgaaf ‘ dealing with serious contemporary issues like globalization, gender, ethnicity, politics, etc. And the audience also flock to see his acting skills at Aarohan Gurukul in Nyaye Premi (Admirer of Justice), a Nepali version of Albert Camus’ Les Justes, as the character Kaliayev. Sanjeev has undertaken a new project nowadays—to create the first digital archive of all Nepali artists through a website by March 2011.

The Mimic Men portrays a character torn between his native culture and western modernization. Set in a Caribbean island, this novel’s theme of cultural conflict is relevant to Nepal’s own social reality. Perhaps that is the reason this book is included in M.A (English) course of Tribhuvan University.

BLACK SKIN. WHITE MASK Author: Frantz Fanon Price: $4.99

The writer of this non-fiction attacks globalization, westernization and white racism-referring to them as ‘white mask of civilization hiding the ugly truth beneath’. Written during the Algerian war of independence in the 1960’s, Fanon’s psychoanalysis of contemporary world greatly influenced civil rights movement. He believes that the dominance of west (especially English speaking nations) has alienated many cultures. Adoption of English language has caused inferiority complex among native language speakers, readers and writers. That’s why I strongly suggest Nepali youth to get oriented towards Nepali literature also. FOUNTAIN HEAD Author: Ayn Rand Price: Rs.500 Following the rules and fulfilling the duties are essential in life, but is that all there is to life? This novel highlights that conflict/struggle between personal freedom and social obligations. In some ways, the story reflects my own life experiences. True happiness will only be bestowed upon a person if he balances personal desires and social responsibilities, that is the theme of this novel. Ayn Rand was rejected by twelve publishers before publishing Fountain Head, her first novel, in 1943. It went on to be a bestseller, selling five million copies worldwide.

Neatly tucked inside from the busy main roads of Jawalakhel, Red Dingo, an Australian cuisine restaurant with a Nepali touch, has been busy for the past several days concocting ideas to be a leader to some and a benchmark to others in enticing its guest ad infinitum. With three water sides inside the restaurant, the squeaky clean infrastructures and a magnificently crafted wooden divider, the interior of Red Dingo looks as delightful as its menu. Jonathan Mendies, the Managing Director of this bistro, has more interesting plans to upgrade both- the interior and the menu. With much effort and patience, Red Dingo has conceptualized the ‘Express Lunch’ as referred by many outside Nepal and just catered it in Nepal for the first time as ‘Quick Smart Lunch’ and ‘ The Salad Bar’, which opens daily from 12 pm to 3 pm. The Salad Bar presents fresh and healthy fruits, vegetables, including the vine leaves. The Quick Smart Lunch offers a variety of Pastas, Sandwiches, exotic characters of gourmet and dressings allowing the guests to choose their own fillings and make their own lunch in a way but without having to do anything. Red Dingo is soon coming up with a special kid’s menu and a bar menu. Having exclusive Australian food like chicken meat pie, Red Dingo meat pie, stuffed chicken breast, Red Dingo stake, pork chops and smoothies as its signature menu items, Red Dingo has always been innovative, different and daring to experiment with what it has to offer. But the most striking aspect, apart from the healthy food and inviting interior in Red Dingo, is the clean and well designed kitchen and the bathroom. The concern given for these two looks immense, and thus pretty much sums up the whole ambience and vigor of Red Dingo.
