SHUTTER HAPPY Acclaimed photographer, writer and educator Elia Locardi travels all over the world to capture spectacular destinations TEXT BY CHIRANTI SENGUPTA
American-born Elia Locardi and his wife transformed their lives into one of simplicity – selling nearly every possession they owned, and leaving their home in 2012. Leading a mobile lifestyle, they have been to more than 55 countries and flown more than one million miles to photograph some of the world's most inspiring destinations. This month, Locardi will be running photography workshops at Gulf Photo Plus in Dubai.
That said, I wouldn’t trade my travel experiences for anything in the world. It has changed me and I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to experience the world and share it with others.
» What are the camera essentials that
photographer? It began initially with a desire to travel the world. However, while I was working in Florida as a motion-graphics designer and animator, I worked 80-hour weeks and before I knew it, I had let eight years go by without taking a single vacation. I was so consumed with work. The idea to make photography and travel such a huge part of our lives began with a trip to Rome in 2009 to meet my Italian family for the first time. I brought along a camera and felt extremely inspired and more creative than I had ever felt before. So my wife and I made a pact that we would make travelling and seeing the world our top priority.
» What encouraged you to focus on travel photography? When I decided to focus on capturing iconic travel destinations, many people said it would be impossible to find something original about places that have been photographed a million times. This challenge motivated me to try even harder on travel photography. I believed that I could always find a unique angle that people hadn’t seen before.
» What is the best photography trick you have learned during your career? Patience. I’m willing to spend days, weeks, or even years to capture a location in the way I want it to be seen.
» What are your favourite destinations for landscape photography? There are so many beautiful places in the world for landscape photography. But, if you’re looking for some great places to build your photography portfolio and you don’t want architecture in your shots, I would highly recommend Iceland, New Zealand, Norway and Canada. Those are a few of my favourites and they’re all easy and safe to navigate. » You have been travelling full time for a significant time now. How has it been? This lifestyle has brought me to the point of ultimate elation, inspiration, and awestruck wonder, but it has also brought me to tears of pain and exhaustion.
» Do you think smartphone cameras could kill the art of photography? No, I believe they are making photography better by making quality images available to everyone, regardless of investment in expensive equipment. I personally love shooting with my iPhone and I also use the same type of small sensors in my DJI Phantom 3 Drone to capture amazing aerial photos and videos.
» What are your favourite photo apps? Snapseed is my favourite for mobile editing, while I also like Camera+ and VSCO. I’m also doing a lot of drone flying with my DJI Go Pilot app. I also really like Angry Birds, which I usually play while I’m waiting for good shooting light!

» What inspired you to become a
any photographer must invest in for landscape photography? Whether DSLR or Mirrorless, invest in a high-quality camera that has interchangeable lenses. And as far as lenses go, always do your research to make sure that they are both high quality and fast, so that you can achieve an aperture of at least f/2.8. Even though you’ll find yourself shooting most of your landscapes with f/8 and f/11, having the option of a faster lens will allow you to capture the night sky as well.

“For centuries, this part of the world was on a key trading route”
“I taught myself,” says my guide, Khalid, with a modest smile, telling me as we sip tea in the lush hotel gardens how he picked up his impressive English. “I read the papers, listened to the radio and talked to tourists.” Omanis are known for their gentle and welcoming manner, but there’s something about the laid-back outpost of Salalah that gives people here special warmth. Perhaps it’s the annual khareef rains, peculiar to this region, which bring a localised monsoon and correspondingly verdant, tropical climate. In antiquity, this corner of the world was known as Arabia Felix – Happy Arabia – a reference to the green pastures and leafy glades. As we drive towards the mountain adventure I’m about to embark on, loaded with camping equipment, supplies and a trusty GPS, we pass Sultan Qaboos’ personal gardens, trees positively

heaving with papaya, mangoes and coconuts. It’s unique, the environment more like south India's than any other nook of the Arabian Peninsula, and it’s beautiful. Khalid is keen to show it off. Anyone who has ever fled the city and pitched their tent in a desert or wadi for a weekend will know about the rare charm of the wild Middle East; the clicks of cooling rock, rustles of canvas in the breeze and almost unnerving emptiness of vast valleys. Given its relative remoteness from the metropolises of the north coast, the mountainous Dhofar region of Oman feels particularly wild. It wasn’t always this way. For centuries this part of the world was on a key trading route that led 2,000 miles from Yemen across Arabia and to the Western world, centred on one product. Frankincense. The sweet resin was once more valuable than gold and coveted by pharaohs

TOP 3 THINGS TO DO EXPLORE To really experience the Dhofar region, you’ve got to get off the road. Mapmyhike (www. mapmyhike.com/om/salalahzufar/) offers good suggestions for those freestyling it, while there are plenty of friendly guides to be found in town if you prefer. BAOBAB GROVE Unusually, Wadi Hinna, just west of Mirbat, is the only place in Arabia where you can find wild baobab trees. Usually found in Africa, no one quite knows how they got here but they, and the lush scenery, make a worthwhile detour. FRANKINCENSE HISTORY So key to this region’s history and riches, frankincense merits a museum in itself. Set in the ruins of former port, Al Baleed, the museum tracks life in the area since 2000BC.

The people here are still semi-nomadic camel herders and the Jebali's mother tongue is an ancient south Arabian language related to the one spoken by the Queen of Sheba. base themselves here; myself included. October to April are the best months for hiking, when the weather is milder. I talk to Khalid and decide on a bespoke three-day, two-night excursion into the al Qamar Mountains towards the Yemen border, in search of the best boswellia frankincense trees. Sturdy

WHERE TO STAY IN SALALAH THE HILTON Inspired by traditional Omani architecture, the upmarket Hilton offers views of both the Dhofar

boots, a tent and plenty of water are the main requirements. “You can sometimes see the Arabian leopard,” says Khalid as we venture into the hills over rocky promontories, through what is in fact a conservation area for the elusive creatures. “But it’s quite rare.” The landscape is breathtaking. Delicate desert flowers growing in impossible crevices; rock hyraxes – which look a little like a fattened guinea pig – scamper tremulously away from the heat and the unknown footsteps. In the heat of the day we retire to shady caves or dip our feet in freshwater springs. Some frankincense trees grow in the gravelly beds, a tangle of branches, but “these are not the best”, Khalid informs me. At night we pitch tents on a precipitous clifftop and wake to a glorious view over the hazy mountains, heating a sooty kettle over a fire of thorny branches to prepare breakfast. On the second day we ascend on to a plateau and a magnificent boswellia grove unfolds in front of us, twisted boughs and stocky trunks signifying former riches and nature’s surprising power. The humidity, warm winter temperatures and mountainous microclimate make these the best spots for the trees to flourish. It feels like being told a precious secret, the best groves often known only

FOR BUDGET WILD CAMPING If you’re on a budget, wild camping is possible on the beach at Mirbat some 80km east of Salalah and, of course, on
the trail. Once the capital of Dhofar thanks to its frankincense riches, it’s now a sleepy fishing town with charm in abundance.
RESTAURANTS TO TRY Like most tourist-minded Middle Eastern towns, Salalah is a melee of local, streetfront eateries and high-end hotel restaurants. The chicest restaurant in town is The Silk Road, attached to the relatively new Rotana hotel. It has gourmet food and an ambient setting to match the prices. For seafood, you can't beat As Sammak, located, as is proper, at the marina. Those wanting Middle Eastern cuisine should look no further than Baalbek, which does the best Lebanese food in town.

The elephant family unit is tightly knit and protective grandmothers often babysit little ones while the parents are away. Here, Rani was taking charge of the young ones, gently nudging them into the water. She surveys us from a distance. Unimpressed, she continues to perform her duties. Ten thousand hectares of teak plantations and waterways are home to Rani and more than 12 other herds of elephants at the Eco Park, part of the Hurulu forest reserve. A 22-kilometre safari across the reserve takes us over narrow mud trails and windy hillocks that offer spectacular vistas of the forest, interrupted only by breath-taking encounters with the Lankan giants along the way. Standing tall at 3.5 metres, Sri Lankan pachyderms are the largest of the Asian species, and tend to intimidate at first sight. However, their interaction with other members of the herd, and even

There’s a nervous rustling of trees and a deep rumble that gets louder, as those thunderous footsteps get closer. Smaller animals scurry past us, clearing the pathway in anticipation. The jungle knows; Rani’s herd is on its way to the watering hole. Deep inside Hurulu Eco Park in Sri Lanka’s Habarana province, our small jeep safari waits patiently for the 62-year-old matriarch, Rani, to lead the way. Hands trembling from excitement and, in part, from the heart-stopping footsteps of more than 16 mammoths moving together, we wait with bated breath. After a long interval under a canopy of leaves, we see the herd saunter towards the water, about six metres away. Two little calves in the herd tug at their mothers’ tails and an adolescent male tries to match step with his grandmother.

other animal species that share their home, reveals their inherent gentle nature and complex emotional range. In fact, it is believed elephants can recognise each other even after a separation of 20 years, and 'catch up' through touching each other’s scars. Close by, is the Kaudulla National Park, located off the Habarana-Trincomalee road within what is known as Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle. A 6,656-hectare ‘elephant corridor’ runs across this park, where most of the country’s elephant population pass through – a natural migratory pattern of the Sri Lankan elephants, at certain times of year when water dries up in areas. The corridor also runs across Minneriya National Park, nestled inside an evergreen forest, off Habarana-Polonnaruwa Road. At the heart of the park lies the ancient Minneriya tank, built in the 3rd century AD by King Mahasena, where huge flocks of painted stork and spot-billed pelicans accompany the elephants on their
grazing trips. It is not uncommon to see a gathering of more than 100 elephants at a time, cooling off and grazing together in the meadows. For a closer and cruelty-free encounter, one can visit the Elephant Transit Home, about five kilometres west of Udawalawe National Park. As an orphanage for abandoned, injured and rescued elephants, the home helps rehabilitate elephants and release them into the wild. Visitors can observe the elephants at feeding time but physical interaction with the animals is not permitted. The home is also supported by international animal rights NGO Born Free Foundation, which has endorsed the orphanage for best practices of animal care. The best way to wrap up the elephant trail is by stopping at a watering hole to watch elephants cool off. As Rani’s herd emerges from the water, we watch the jungle prepare yet again, for the regal departure.

The gateway to India, Mumbai is a fascinating and feisty city to explore, writes Mairead Walsh
Spread along a tapering peninsula into the Indian Ocean, Mumbai is a city chock-full of colourful characters – from local fishermen, labourers and cooks to starlets, gangsters and other ‘crorepatis’, or millionaires. The city has an ‘anything can happen’ kind of vibe. Whether it’s stepping on to the set of a Bollywood film, sitting on the oval sidelines with obsessive cricket fans or feasting on street food, Mumbai offers visitors many unique experiences. Once you get past the pollution and hectic traffic, you’ll discover Mumbai’s inimitable contrasts. It is one of the world’s most densely populated cities (with around 22 million people), yet home to the largest tropical rainforest in an urban quarter. It’s has the biggest and most notorious slums in Asia, as well as the world’s most expensive homes – it is the financial powerhouse of India, after all. And it’s the cuttingedge epicentre of the art, fashion, and film industry in the subcontinent, yet strolling through parts of the
city you’ll find ancient temples, impressive historic landmarks and some of the grandest colonial-era architecture on the planet. Start your adventure wandering around the posh western suburb of Bandra, where you may run into Bollywood beauties and famous cricket players who call this neighbourhood home. Bandra is also known for its graffiti artwork depicting Bollywood stars. Check out Veronica Street and Chapel Road to see some funky murals. In the early hours of the day, the aroma of freshly baked goods wafts from the A1 Bakery on Hill Road – follow your nose and the crowd. Before you leave Bandra, stop in at Elco market, one of the oldest spots on Hill Road, for some popular chaat (Indian snack foods) such as vada pao (a deep-fried potato patty, but beware of the spicy sauce), pav bhaaji (veggie curry) and pani puri (a fried crisp ball filled with a mixture of tamarind chutney, chilli, masala, onion and chickpeas). Next up, head to Dharavi, which may bring to mind images from Danny Boyle’s film Slumdog Millionaire, but get a guide to show you around Dharavi's workshops and tanneries, where leather

bags, jackets and belts are all produced inside the narrow streets. You’ll be killing two birds with one stone – experience the inside of the slums (with a guide) but also contribute to the livelihood of the resilient inhabitants. Grab a taxi and head south. En route, keep an eye out the window and you may catch a glimpse of the famous dabbawallahs – Mumbai’s unbelievable 5,000-strong fleet of lunch-delivery boys who transport thousands of meals every day with astonishing accuracy and speed. Make a stop at Mahalakshmi Mandir, one of the most famous temples in Mumbai, and take some time to explore. Next, test your bargaining skills (but be sure to keep your wallet safely tucked away) in the streets of popular flea market Chor Bazaar (Thief’s Market, although this name came from the British mispronunciation of the original name, Shor Bazaar, which means ‘noisy market’). Bargain-hunters arrive in droves to sift through old Bollywood posters and collectibles, used sewing machines, spare vehicle parts, and even period furniture. An undeniably iconic structure in central Mumbai is Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. Formerly known as Victoria Station, this historical railway station was
built in 1853. Today, you can wander around the well-maintained colonial-era building and dodge thousands of commuters more interested in catching their train than taking in the stunning architecture. From here, head to Churchgate, where you’ll wander past ovals and parklands overlooked by the historic buildings of Mumbai University, Rajabai Clock Tower and the High Court. But you’ll probably be more distracted by the locals playing cricket in the park. They welcome tourists to join in – and certainly test your batting skills with their crafty spinners. But don’t expect to come out ahead. Indians, especially Mumbaikers, take cricket very seriously. The locals will easily bowl you out and then gleefully shriek, “You’re out! India wins, again!” Make your way to the Colaba Causeway, where bargaining – for novelty t-shirts, miniature Taj Mahals, drums, flutes, costume jewellery and more – is serious business. And while you’re there, check out Leopold Café. Made famous by the novel Shantaram, an epic tale about a prisoner who escaped jail in Australia in the 1980s and fled to India, mixing with some intriguing characters in Mumbai’s underworld, Leopold Café draws curious tourists but the menu

is cheap and cheerful and popular with locals too. I think the chilli garlic prawn is worth the stop. Almost the southernmost tip of Mumbai is where you’ll find the Gateway of India, a colonial structure erected to welcome King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. Today, hundreds of vendors gather around this historic archway, overlooking Mumbai Harbour, selling everything from favoured Indian sweets like jalebi (those ubiquitous bright-orange pastries, made from battered and deep-fried wheat flour soaked in sugar syrup) to postcards, jewellery and ferry trips to Elephanta Island to explore Hindu and Buddhist sculpted caves dating from the 5th to 8th centuries. Across the street, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel is the ultimate vestige of colonial architecture. Opened in 1903, the property welcomed maharajas, dignitaries and celebrities to its classic Victorian-era interiors. Drop in for afternoon tea at the Sea Lounge. In the evening, join the locals who gather on the broad curve of Chowpatty Beach, the city’s small slice of seaside. While the shoreline is littered with food stalls, you may want to step away from the crowd and cross Marine Drive to the Bachelorr’s stall – an institution that has been selling kulfi (Indian ice cream) since 1940. I recommend the pistachio. Whether you get swept up in the colourful chaos of Mumbai or sit back to take in its pulsating pace, the city’s contrasts, charismatic characters and colonial charm make it a memorable visit. With the spectacle of its annual carnival taking place this month, and the temperate climate, this Côte d’Azur city renowned for its natural beauty lives up to its reputation as a truly glamorous destination
Poor old Nice. Sitting along a coastline with celebrityfavourite Cannes to the west and the glitzy tax haven of Monte Carlo to the east, it has strong competition when it comes to generating headlines. But if the thought of sharing a restaurant terrace with perma-tanned, millionaire playboys in Monaco or squealing in delight at spotting your favourite celeb partying in Cannes doesn’t appeal, perhaps you should consider France’s fifth-largest city. Littered with art deco buildings that evoke the golden age of the French Rivera, a burgeoning epicurean scene and its beautifully curving Promenade des Anglais and beaches, there’s plenty that equals or surpasses its cultural rivals.

Paid for by the English residents of Nice in 1822, hence the name (Promenade des Anglais), the city’s five-kilometre beachfront prom is where to saunter around and pose. Flanked by pebbly beaches on one side – where it’s advised to fork out the nominal amount for a

guests, the avant-garde concepts include Digital, which is a room where the design has been inspired by cyber culture
lounger – and chocolate-box pretty art deco buildings with ornate details on the other, it’s a pretty little place. Rent one of the city bikes – a Vélo Bleu – and cover more ground. Free for 30 minutes, then a more-than-reasonable €1 per hour.

Foodies will be in culinary heaven in the La Libération neighbourhood — around two kilometres north of the touristy

Vieux, or Old Town. The residents have a proud view of their historic influence on our contemporary palates (if you’ve ever come across a salade niçoise you’ll know what I mean). La Libération Marché is the neighbourhood’s daily market and, unlike its equivalent in the Vieux, it's used predominantly by French locals. Surrounding streets feature casual hole-in-the-wall food shops where the city’s inhabitants queue for pan-bagnat – a bread roll with a tuna niçoise filling. Head to La Libération during spring and autumn and vendors will also cheerfully shuck fresh oysters for you to slurp right on the street.
Evening
Unlike the towns of Cannes and Antibes, which become quiet during the low season, Nice is a proper working city and therefore enjoys a lively nightlife scene throughout the year. From intimate Le Ghost club, where you have to ring a doorbell to get in and at weekends can expect a packed dance floor (with locals dancing to electro beats), to Le
Pub Opéra in Vieux, where you’ll find local intellectual types discussing issues over a quiet drink, Nice has a varied and vibrant social scene after sunset.
DAY 2
Morning
Although a little touristy, the narrow streets of Vieux (the Old Town) are worth a visit as they have remained largely unchanged from the 1700s. Quaint pastel shaded-buildings with wooden shutters create a historic atmosphere and the city’s famous flower market (every morning except on Mondays) on Cours Saleya adds colour to the occasion. For a culinary treat, be

sure to stop off at Chez Thérésa Socca stall. Theresa will present you with socca (a traditional chickpea pancake), a slice of pissaladière (Nice’s take on pizza, with anchovies, garlic and caramelised onions) and a chilled drink, all for under €10.
Afternoon
Just outside Nice is where the Rolling Stones were holed up in 1971, avoiding UK tax authorities and completing their seminal album Exile on Main St in the basement of Keith Richard’s rented villa. The Stones aren’t the only artistic heavyweights to have produced some of their finest work on the Riviera though. Artist Henri Matisse spent almost four decades in or around
THE NICE CARNIVAL Viewed as one of the world’s most significant carnivals, the event has records dating its existence back to 1294. Drawing more than a million visitors to the city, the two-week festival includes parades, more than 1,000 musicians and dancers, and the traditional flower throwing (some 100,000 blooms are expected to have been lobbed by the end of the celebrations). Nice. The Frenchman stayed mainly at the Hotel Regina (also a favourite of Queen Victoria) in the city’s hills, now luxury apartments. Much of Matisse’s artistic legacy from his time in Nice he bequeathed to the city and the excellent Musée Matisse. Housed in a 1700s villa, the collection features his paintings, sculptures and personal items, including the painter’s famous blue cut-outs from the 1950s that now feature on posters across the world.

The programme aims to raise funds through initiatives such as on-board donations. The fund is raised and collected annually and then re-

In a bid to improve existing services and assist those in need, Charity Cloud undertook a number of projects this year. One such initiative was to visit two orphanages in Jordan and Morocco. Volunteers from various departments at Air Arabia visited the institutions and assisted in providing donations collected. Apart from the health and education projects across the region, Charity Cloud has also partnered other social initiatives. It works in partnership with the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services with the aim of making the lives of people with disability easier. The airline is sensitive to individuals with special needs and assistance is always provided at airports and during travel.

(NYSE: TXT) , to produce an A320 FFS X™ Level D full motion flight simulator. TRU Simulation + Training will manufacture the A320 FFS X in its Montreal, Canada facility.
Upon completion, the new A320 FFS X will undergo qualification by EASA CS-FSTD(A) for Level D use. The full flight simulator is slated for installation at Air Arabia’s facility at the Sharjah Airport International in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates by the second quarter of this year.

أعلنت العربية للطيران عن توقيع اتفاقية مع شركة "تي آر يو سيميوليشن +تريننج" التابعة لشركة تكسترون (المدرجة في بورصة نيويورك تحت الرمز ،)TXTوذلك إلنتاج جهاز محاكاة طيران كامل الحركة من الفئة (A320 D
)™ . FFS Xوجاء ذلك خالل مشاركة الناقلة في معرض البحرين الدولي للطيران الذي استضافته قاعدة الصخير الجوية في يناير. وستقوم "تي آر يو سيميوليشن +تريننج" بتصنيع جهاز المحاكاة )™ (A320 FFS Xفي مصنعها بمدينة مونتريال الكندية .وسيخضع الجهاز لدى اكتمال تصنيعه للتصنيف ضمن الفئة Dوفقًا لمعيار ) CS-FSTD(Aمن الوكالة األوروبية لسالمة الطيران .ومن المقرر تركيب الجهاز ضمن منشأة العربية للطيران في مطار الشارقة الدولي بحلول الربع الثاني من عام .2016

العربية للطيران تواصل دعم القضايا اإلنسانية
وبنغالديش والهند .وباإلضافة إلى ذلك ،ساهم مشروع سحاب الخير في دعم مبادرة إغاثة ضحايا الزلزال في نيبال ،وقام فريق موظفيه بجمع وشحن أكثر من 7طن من التبرعات العينية إلى البلد المنكوب .وقد أطلق مشروع سحاب الخير مشاريع أخرى تضم مبادرة لمكافحة أمراض القلب في السودان. كما واصلت العربية للطيران في عام 2015تحفيز موظفيها على المشاركة في نشاطات المسؤولية المجتمعية للشركات. وضمن سعيها لتطوير وتحسين الخدمات ومساعدة المحتاجين قامت سحابة الخير بعدد من المشاريع خالل السنة .وكان ضمن تلك المبادرات تنظيم زيارات إلى دارين لأليتام في األردن والمغرب حيث قام المتطوعون من عدد من أقسام شركة العربية للطيران بزيارة تلك المؤسسات وشاركوا بتوزيع التبرعات. إلى جانب المشاريع الصحية والتربوية في المنطقة ،أقام مشروع سحاب الخير عدة شراكات كانت العربية للطيران من أوائل الشركات التي

مـومـبـاي مومباي ،التي يطلق عليها لقب بوابة الهند ،مدينة مذهلة وينطوي استكشاف معالمها على جهد وحركة دؤوبة كما تخبرنا ماريد وولش
تقــع مومبــاي علــى شــبه جزيــرة تمتــد فــي المحيــط الهنــدي ،وتعــج
علــى الجــدران .فــي الســاعات األولــى مــن الصبــاح تنتشــر رائحــة
بمزيــج هائــل مــن الشــخصيات المتميــزة والمتفاوتــة ،مــن صيــادي
المعجنــات والحلويــات الطازجــة بالقــرب مــن إيــه 1بيكــري علــى هيــل
الســمك المحلييــن والعمــال والطهــاة إلــى النجــوم والمشــاهير
رود – دع حاســة الشــم تقــودك إلــى المــكان ،أو اتبــع جمهــور الزبائــن
واألثريــاء وحتــى المجرميــن .تتميــز المدينــة بإيقاعهــا الســريع
المتجهــة نحــو المخبــز .قبــل أن تغــادروا بانــدرا توقفــوا فــي ســوق
ونبضهــا الحيــوي ،حيــث يمكــن أن تتحقــق األحــام .وتقــدم مومبــاي
إلكــو ،الــذي يعتبــر مــن أقــدم األماكــن علــى هيــل رود ،لتــذوق بعــض
ـواء كانــت مــن خــال زيــارة لمواقــع تصويــر تجــارب فريــدة لزوارهــا سـ ً

وإذا تجوزنــا التلــوث واالختناقــات المروريــة المنهكــة التــي تشــتهر بهــا مومبــاي ،ســوف نكتشــف مدينــة ذات مفارقــات ال
المقليــة والمحشــوة بخليــط مــن مخلــل التمــر الهنــدي والفلفــل األحمــر الحــار والبصــل والحمــص مــع خلطــة ماســاال).
تضاهــى؛ فهــي المدينــة ذات الكثافــة الســكانية األعلــى فــي
نتوجــه بعــد ذلــك إلــى دارافــي التــي قــد تذكركــم بصــور

مطاعم على غرار المدن الشرق أوسطية المهتمة بالسياحة ،تحفل صاللة بكافة أنواع األمكنة التي تقدم الوجبات والمـأكوالت ،من المطاعم المحلية البسيطة وحتى مطاعم الفنادق الراقية .ويعد مطعم سيلك رود في فندق روتانا صاللة الجديد نسبيًا من أرقى المطاعم في المدينة وأكثرها أناقة .يقدم جو المطعم أفخر المأكوالت في ٍ مرموق متناسب مع أسعار الفندق. أما بالنسبة لعشاق المأكوالت البحرية فهناك مطعم سماك الذي يعد األفضل في المدينة ويقع على الشاطىء ،فيما يتميز مطعم بعلبك اللبناني بألذ المأكوالت الشرق أوسطية.

الكنــدر (أو بوســويليا كمــا يســمى بالالتينــي) الــذي يســتخرج منــه صمــغ اللبــان .االحتياجــات الرئيســية هــي :زوج مــن األحذيــة المتينــة، وخيمــة والكثيــر مــن المــاء. يخبرنــي خالــد قائــ ً ا" :يظهــر النمــر العربــي فــي بعــض األحيــان ،ولكــن ظهــوره نــادر للغايــة"، فيمــا نســير علــى الهضــاب والتــال خــال منطقــة مخصصــة لحمايــة الحيــوان المهــدد باإلنقــراض بصــورة حرجــة. المشــهد مذهــل .تنمــو األزهــار الصحراويــة الرقيقــة فــي أدق الشــقوق الصخريــة ،وتجــري الوبريــات (حيوانــات شــبيهة باليربــوع ،ولكنهــا أكثــر ســمنةً ) بحــذر وقلــق مبتعــد ًة عــن الحــر، وعــن الخطــر ،وهنــا وهنــاك نلمــح آثــار خطــوات ال نعرفهــا. فــي ســاعات النهــار نلجــأ إلــى ظــل الكهــوف هربــً مــن قيــظ الحــر ،أو نغمــس أقدامنــا فــي مجــرى عيــون الميــاه العذبــة .تنمــو بعــض أشــجار الكنــدر فــي أحــواض صخريــة أحيانــً" ،ولكنهــا ليســت األفضــل جــودة" كمــا نبهنــي خالــد .فــي الليــل ننصــب خيامنــا علــى قمــة جــرف شــديد اإلنحــدار ،ونصحــو صباحــً علــى منظــر مذهــل للجبــال المغطــاة بالضبــاب .جمعنــا بعــض األغصــان المليئــة باألشــواك لنشــعل النــار مــن أجــل تســخين المــاء وتحضيــر وجبــة اإلفطــار. فــي اليــوم الثانــي صعدنــا علــى هضبــة لحقــل مــن لينكشــف أمامنــا منظــر رائــع ٍ أشــجار الكنــدر التــي تظهــر بجذوعهــا العريضــة والممتلئــة وأغصانهــا الملتويــة فــي إشــارة إلــى تاريــخ مــن الغنــى وبالغــة مظاهــر الطبيعــة. ٍ تســاهم الرطوبــة والشــتاء الــدافء والمنــاخ المحلــي للموقــع الجبلــي فــي توفيــر البيئــة األفضــل لنمــو وازدهــار هــذه األشــجار. إلى اليمين :جني اللبان من أشجار الكندر؛ الصفحة المقابلة إلى األعلى :ضريح بن علي في مرباط

مخيمات برية واقتصادية للرحالت اإلقتصادية يتاح التخييم على الشاطىء في مرباط التي تبعد مسافة 80كيلومتر شرقي صاللة ،وبالطبع يتاح
التخييم في البر. كانت مرباط قديمًا عاصمة ظفار في تجارة اللبان ،لكنها اآلن مرفأ هادىء لصيد السمك.

عندمــا يميــل المنــاخ إلــى اإلعتــدال .اجتمعــت

الجمــال .ويتحــدث ســكان جبــال ظفــار اللغــة
جبــال القمــر قــرب الحــدود مــع اليمــن علــى
العربيــة ولكــن ببعــض اللهجــات القديمــة
مــدى ثالثــة أيــام وليلتــان للبحــث عــن شــجر
المنتشــرة فــي جنــوب الجزيــرة العربيــة شــبيهة بلغــة بلقيــس ملكــة ســبأ التــي مــا زالــت بقايــا آثــار قصرهــا الصيفــي موجــودة.

علمــت نفســي بنفســي؛ قــرأت الصحــف،
