“Moving Home,” Installation by Here LAX Airport (Los Angeles International Airport) May 15th, 2018–August 15th, 2018

Top view of the installation

51

Here

“Here” is thrilled to present “Moving home,” a site-specific installation at Lax Airport that incorporates travelers’ thoughts and memories about home as part of the work. People traveling to LA will be prompted to upload their thoughts on home prior to departure using the Here app. Upon arrival, they will be greeted by the messages they sent, which are now displayed as part of the installation in the form of text or sound. “Moving home” seeks to bring together questions of belonging and dis- tance as constitutive of what we may understand as ‘home.’ It promotes a sense of wonder, the meeting of new worlds, while still tracing a sense of belonging from ‘home’ based on traveler’s data. 52

Interviews Interview 1: Heejeong

Do you think what’s the meaning of ‘Distance?’ What does it mean to you? To me, distance means physical and mental space in between things or people. Depending on the amount of space and the subjects, the meaning is changing. When do you feel distant? What are you longing for? Tell me about your feeling. When it takes time to reach out to somebody, or something. The number of miles, and time difference. Also, when they need some help but I can’t do anything for them expect a phone call, sending packages or text. I am longing for my family when I feel alone, especially holidays, a weekend with any schedule. If my boyfriend lives in a different area, I would long for him as well. Feel separated, but mentally feel more connected at some point. What do you usually do when you feel distant? Call my family, text them which I can directly reach out to them. Print out some photos and put on my wall at home. 83

Do you still feel a sense of belonging even though you are far away from something or someone? If yes, how? Of course. Since my family and I often do facetime and if something happens, we just text each other in our group chatting room, I do feel a sense of belonging. Do you think there could be the new side of distance rather than just separation? For me, a certain amount of distance is good for each other, and make us more feel tied up than living together in one space. Since people can appreciate each other when they live away from each other. Where do you live now? Do you live with your family? Or alone? I am in Pasadena, live by myself.

86

Interviews Interview 2: Joshua

Do you think what’s the meaning of ‘Distance?’ What does it mean to you? Distance is the connection(psychological/emotional/cognitive) you share with your family, friends, and people in my life. When do you feel distant? What are you longing for? Tell me about your feeling. I feel distant when I can no longer able to connect with people I used to feel close with. I long for emotional connection. What do you usually do when you feel distant? Still in the process of figuring that out. I used to make phone calls but it doesn’t seem to work out anymore as memories shared with people I used to connect with seems to be blurring away. Do you still feel a sense of belonging even though you are far away from something or someone? If yes, how? Sort of, sometimes I feel like I’m missing out and this causes me to feel like I am distancing from connections and the past. 87

Here

Do you think there could be the new side of distance rather than just separation? Time Where do you live now? Do you live with your family? Or alone? I live in Pasadena, dad lives in Hongkong, mom and sister live in Seoul.

88

Interviews Interview 3: Sue

Do you think what’s the meaning of ‘Distance?’ What does it mean to you? It’s relationship with people. It’s always whether I keep a distance from others or get closer to them. How much I care about this person, vice versa. When do you feel distant? What are you longing for? Tell me about your feeling. When I want to get close to someone, I give my interest to the one. But at the same time, I always expect something to take back. Sometimes my expectation falls to meet what I expect. It’s not materialistic. It’s heart to heart. It’s hurt when I feel this person doesn’t care about me. But I believe without getting hurt, without giving a heart, I’m not able to know someone and get closer to the one. What do you usually do when you feel distant? I used to come back to myself and keep away from others. Being all alone. Don’t get hurt. Don’t give and don’t expect. But I don’t do that anymore. I just keep the distance and wait for others 89

Here

to come closer to me. Once they are ready, I move a step forward to them. Do you still feel a sense of belonging even though you are far away from something or someone? If yes, how? Sometimes yes, and sometimes no. It’s right when we are next to something or someone, our sense reacts strongly. But once we are physically away from something or someone, we lose the strong emotion. Time to time I get confused since I can’t feel anything when I’m away from my people and something that I’m interested in. The directions in relationships should be interactive. One from me and the other from somebody. But if there is nothing comes and goes, nothing causes. Even though I’m still in touch with people that I care and I believe our relationships are same as before, if I do not have any chances to meet them, the physical distance makes me to lose a sense of belonging. But I have years that I’ve shared with them, and it makes me do not forget about how much I love them. Do you think there could be the new side of distance rather than just separation? No. Another meaning of distance is separation mentally and physically. We should know we always have some distances with others or something. 89

Interviews

It’s because we are separated. I sometimes feel that I’m separated from myself or from my past: I feel distant from myself and from my past. Where do you live now? Do you live with your family? Or alone? I live by myself in New York.

91

Here Interview 4: Sookyung

Do you think what’s the meaning of ‘Distance?’ What does it mean to you? The distance means the amount of space between two points. For me, distant is psychological distance. When do you feel distant? What are you longing for? Tell me about your feeling. I feel distant when the conversation does not pass now with friends who were good friends when I was a high school. So I spoke only when there was a pause in the conversation, to avoid the embarrassment of silence. I feel kind of weird. I'm not sure how I've changed. But Something definitely changed since I was a high school student. What do you usually do when you feel distant? Honestly, I drink beers to cheer myself up. I feel very different and lonely. Trying to make myself feel better. Like “I wouldn’t say that I’m a different person, just that I’ve matured a lot in the last couple of years.”

92

Interviews

Do you still feel a sense of belonging even though you are far away from something or someone? If yes, how? Never. If yes, in some case, keep in touch with someone every day. Do you think there could be the new side of distance rather than just separation? Awareness of difference? Awkward? Inconvenience? If you have anything else to add, please tell your story freely. I think the physical distance is changed to psychological distance. Where do you live now? Do you live with your family? Or alone? I live with my husband and dog.

93

Here Interview 5: Veka

Do you think what’s the meaning of ‘Distance?’ What does it mean to you? Distance means far and lengthy. When do you feel distant? What are you longing for? Tell me about your feeling. I feel distant when there is no shared feeling. I look for the emotional connection. What do you usually do when you feel distant? I remain quiet about it. Do you still feel a sense of belonging even though you are far away from something or someone? If yes, how? Yes, as long as I have trust in that person. Do you think there could be the new side of distance rather than just separation? Yes, I believe the two are very different. Separation seems much more determined.

94

Interviews

If you have anything else to add, please tell your story freely. I live far away from my family and also I was in a long distance relationship. Being away from someone who you are close with, who you love is very difficult. Do you think what’s the definition of home? (Personally. Tell anything about home.) For me, home is where you longing for either you are away for a daytime or for a while. Where do you live now? Do you live with your family? Or alone? I live in New Jersey by myself.

95

Here Interview 6: John

Do you think what’s the meaning of ‘Distance?’ What does it mean to you? Distance means slow and steady. When do you feel distant? What are you longing for? Tell me about your feeling. When how I was brought up is different from someone else. What do you usually do when you feel distant? I tend to avoid. Do you still feel a sense of belonging even though you are far away from something or someone? If yes, how? No. The physical connection is very important for me as much as emotional needs. Do you think there could be the new side of distance rather than just separation? Yes, distance is not measured in length.

96

Interviews

If you have anything else to add, please tell your story freely. Fuck distance. Do you think what’s the definition of home? (Personally. Tell anything about home.) Home is where it's comfortable, warm, love, fun. Where do you live now? Do you live with your family? Or alone? I live in New Jersey. I live with my family.

Do you think what’s the meaning of ‘Distance?’ What does it mean to you? I think “distance” has two meanings. First, distance shows specific numbers how far away from the place by geographically. Second, Distance is used when people want to express personal emotion between their relationship. When do you feel distant? What are you longing for? Tell me about your feeling. I usually feel geographic distance when I want to meet my family. My family is living in South Korea and I have been living for almost six years in the US. I want to see them every day but we are living in different country. So, at that time, I feel “Geographic distance”. I was here to study Business and now I married my husband. My husband is the US citizen so I need to stay in the US. What do you usually do when you feel distant? I always feel “Geographic distance” with my family because we are living in different country. 98

Interviews

I never felt “distance” emotionally from my family. Because I do FaceTime at least twice a week, I do not feel lonely. If you have anything else to add, please tell your story freely. I do not believe that good relationships depend on distance. For example, I cannot meet my friends who are living in South Korea for two years and a half. However, we do not feel any “Emotional distance” between our friendship. Because we are keeping in touch and trying to talk every day. I think if I contact them frequently, I will not feel any “Geographic or Emotional distance” from them. Where do you live now? Do you live with your family? Or alone? Now, I’m living with my husband in New Jersey. Before the marriage, I was living alone for four years in the US.

Here Interview 8: Yunji

Do you think what’s the meaning of ‘Distance?’ What does it mean to you? I think there are a lot of meanings to explain the word ‘Distance’. However, the distance does not mean only physical space or gap to me; It is a mental issue as well. This would mean loneliness or even depression. This would be also love or relationship. When do you feel distant? What are you longing for? Tell me about your feeling. I sometimes feel distance because I have lived and studied in Switzerland which is not my country, South Korea, since 2016. It is too far to go for a day, so I feel physical distance between two countries. Additionally, on the psychological side, I always miss my family and Korean friends. Now I am longing for meeting them. Of course I have really good friends here and normally spend precious time with them, but still feel lonely from time to time. What do you usually do when you feel distant? No matter when I feel distant, I try to find some100

thing to focus on. For example, I play board games with friends, watch movies, read books or enjoy traveling. I call my mother and boyfriend as well. Do you still feel a sense of belonging even though you are far away from something or someone? If yes, how? I feel a sense of belonging since I am in school at present and I have friends like family. We share and respect our feeling and opinions each other and it makes me feel comfortable even if I am staying far from my home. Do you think there could be the new side of distance rather than just separation? I think it could be a word with infinite meaning. On the other hand, it could be a meaningless word due to technological development. I mean this can be a word of the past. Where do you live now? Do you live with your family? Or alone? I live in Switzerland by myself.

For me, it means emotional distance. When do you feel distant? What are you longing for? Tell me about your feeling. When someone who is close go abroad about more than six month. When my parents go abroad more than one week. When I hesitate or be uncomfortable to say something to my friend. I feel loneliness, cold, empty, blank. What do you usually do when you feel distant? I try to contact them and find something to talk about. Do you still feel a sense of belonging even though you are far away from something or someone? If yes, how? Yes, by texting messages or doing SNS. 102

Here Interview 10: Diana

Do you think what’s the meaning of ‘Distance?’ What does it mean to you? To me, distance is one of energy. It can be physics meaning but to me, energy is more about the abstract meaning. When do you feel distant? What are you longing for? Tell me about your feeling. Lack of connecting energy. I am a person who is affected by surrounded environment and people. What do you usually do when you feel distant? Try to contact and talk more. Do you still feel a sense of belonging even though you are far away from something or someone? If yes, how? No and Yes. Nowadays SNS is one of the powerful function. It is not really realistic space but still, there is a connection. The Internet gives us the distance solution. If you have anything else to add, please tell your story freely. I’d like to add memory distance. 104

Interviews

When I was a child, maybe I had some friends. But I don’t remember their name, face, and even voice too. I think time and my interest made a distance from these memories. Kind of this distance is the worst distance to me. Very sad and scary. Actually, I tried to think about positive distance meaning, but I just found me only keep thinking about negative way. Do you think what’s the definition of home? (Personally. Tell anything about home.) Home is physical and psychologic space. Where do you live now? Do you live with your family? Or alone? Now I live in New York with my roommate.

about someone. It makes deeper emotion and feeling about someone. If you have anything else to add, please tell your story freely. When I was in a long distance relationship, I felt it was not easy. Talking to my boyfriend though a phone put me under a lot of stress and depressed because both of us were not familiar with talking deeper emotion and feeling. Communicating through a phone made the situation get worse. Where do you live now? Do you live with your family? Or alone? I live in Pasadena now. I live with housemates, not family.

“Forms Derived from a Cube,” featuring wall drawings, gouaches, and sculptures from the 1980s. LeWitt used the form of the cube to create a vocabulary that formed the basis of his practice throughout his career. As a universal form, the cube requires no interpretation on the part of the viewer and allowed the artist to create a multitude of figures and images using only an essential idea.

Various kinds of home-shaped mobiles are hanging from a rail on the ceiling. Each shape has its own pattern representing family roots. Each shape moves slowly, a movement which displaces parts of each shape to symbolize travel, distance and a renewed conception of ‘home’.

The overall concept is similar to previous work. I made each form movable so that people can move parts of the home and make new forms.

I put the home-shaped forms, and the fixed signs say ‘home’ with different languages on the circular rotating panel representing globe. When the panel rotates with home-shaped forms, the fixed signs will still point them. It symbolizes ‘Home anywhere.’
