Painpoints of App ‘OLIO’

- It needs the required step for the uploader that needs to take before sharing like photo with expiration dates, it would be more reliable. - Good idea but still afraid to meet a stranger one on one in front of my house. 14

‘Just Gone’ menu does not neccessary because that Just Gone food is now useless for users who are finding available deals.

Add Listing’ interface is complicated since there’re both options offering and wanted. It’s hard to get it easily.

The men power problem to deliver or pickup the donated items.

David Sensente In-Kind Donations Manager Union Station Homeless Service

How your organization get food donation? We get food donation from Companies, Restaurants, individuals and Organization. They will contact us or we do as well every time they have food to donate or when we are in need.

How’s food condition usually? Is there any problem with food hygiene? How could you check food hygiene? The condition of the food is usually good to excellent. In regards to the hygiene, the food that we obtain has no issues since we check expiration dates and we get donations from reputable sources.

Is there any other problem with food sharing? One of the biggest problems when it comes to donations is the men power when it comes to delivering or picking up the donated items. Sometimes when a new donor is identify we as an agency are the ones that have to provide volunteers to go pick up the donations and as you may know that takes time and men power that sometimes agencies do not have especially non profit organization.

I am trying to make app to share food more effectively. When people, not only company or restaurant but even individual, make excess food or have expiration date that nears, they can share food with neighbors or homeless for free by using GPS system. (Giver will upload their food photo and information.) And it will use food scanner that will help to check food hygiene unlike existing food sharing app. Also, for safety problem, delivery men will pick up food and deliver it to people who need food. Or Giver (Donator) can drop by food bank to donate it. How do you think about it? I think the idea to channel food donations to specific agencies is excellent. the only thing that it is not clear to me is how a scanner will check for the hygiene or quality of the food. 18

Technology alone cannot guarantee food safety or client dignity.

Justin Block Director, Retail Information Services Feeding America (National Organization)

I am thrilled you are thinking about creating a donation app – Feeding America has a donation app for our network to use called MealConnect (mealconnect.org or search in both Apple or Google Play) and we just crossed 1,000,000 pickups. Your questions are very good, and I would say that technology alone cannot guarantee food safety or client dignity. Our network of over 200 food banks and their 60,000 partner agencies work hard every day to move over 4 billion pounds of donated food each year safely and respectfully. This food comes from growers, manufacturers, retailers, restaurants, and individuals. Since you are a designer, I would love to see any screenshot mock-ups you have. We are pretty satisfied with our design but I’m always curious to see how others envision the solution.

Interview Do you usually cook at home? How often?

If yes, to where and how? If not, why?

Yes, during the term, 3-4 times a week, but in vacation, 5-6 times a week.

I cooked many cookies back in the day at home, so I packed some cookies and shared with my classmates at school.

What kinds of foods do you usually cook?

Heejeong Seong Age: 27 Gender: Female Occupation: Student Location: Pasadena, CA Features: Calm, Kind, Enjoying staying-at-home

I think I heard there’re a couple of apps, but I don’t know exactly.

I heard that you live alone. When did you begin to live alone? Is there any problem when you cook at home?

Do you know the app “OLIO”? If not, tell me your experience after using the app.

I have lived alone since September last year for going to ArtCenter Sometimes whenever I cook meat like steak, the smoke is too much, it’s hard to ventilate the air. Also, even though I cook only for me (1 serving), still I use so many dishes and utensils that make me be annoyed since it makes too many things to wash.

The concept is good especially for people who live alone. But it was frustrating I noticed the nearest one is 165km far away from me. That doesn’t help. (Maybe there’re no one uses the app nearby) And I don’t know why there’s ‘Just Gone’ menu because that Just Gone food is now useless for users who are finding available deals. It would make users be confused. And at the top corner, ‘Donate’ button was confused. I thought the button was for donating food or stuff but actually, that meant for the app. Also ‘Add Listing’ interface is complicated since there’re both options offering and wanted. Do I select both options for adding lists? I couldn’t get it easily.

How do you manage foods which expiration dates near or excess food? Since I don’t buy lots of food at once, usually I remember most of the foods’ expiration dates roughly like yogurt, eggs, etc. So, I check the date again if the date is coming. But whenever I open the refrigerator, I totally forget about vegetables and skip to check the vegetables and throw away the waste, because I keep them inside the vegetable section separately.

Have you ever donated your foods? With friends, yes.

26

Do you have any idea of the way to share the excess food?

Mostly, Korean food cooking from rice to fried beans or mushroom, meat and occasionally pasta, salad, and noodles.

If there is a food sharing app that combines with social dining concept, do you want to use it? How do you think about it? I definitely use it if it guarantees safe spaces like the garden or outdoor grilling area at apartment.

Interview Do you usually cook at home? How often?

Do you have any idea of the way to share the excess food?

I usually cook at my home at least four times a week.

I haven’t done it so often, but when I do, I share food with friends, family, and neighbors.

What kinds of foods do you usually cook? Korean, American, and Italian.

I heard that you live alone. When did you begin to live alone? Is there any problem when you cook at home?

Ahra Cho Age: 28 Gender: Female Occupation: Student Location: New Jersey Features: Sociable, Talkative

Yes, I have been living alone since I was 23. The only problem is usually the leftovers and sometimes eating alone makses me feel so lonely.

How do you manage foods which expiration dates near or excess food? To prevent wasting of food and money, I try not to buy too much food ingredients at one time. Especially, diary, fruit, and vegetable. You know, I’m living alone so I don’t need a pack of carrot. I make frequent runs to the market, and purchase ingredients in small amount. But when I make excess food, I put the foods in a small container to keep it in refrigerator and try to eat it later but often I just throw it away in the end.

Have you ever donated your foods? No.

If yes, to where and how? If not, why? No. I never had the chance to donate my food. If I will have a chance to donate my foods, I’m happily willing to do that. 30

Do you know the app “OLIO”? If not, tell me your experience after using the app. I have never used the app “OLIO”. I did come by other apps with similar concept that deals with furniture, books, clothing, and so on. But had not seen one that manage food donations. I think this app will be helpful to prevent wasting of food caused by the general consumers. Many times, people realize they bought something that they don’t need but can’t find the receipt, or only use very small portion. At the same time, there are so many people who can benefit from food that probably will go to waste. “OLIO” can help to reduce good food going to waste, and help ones who are hungry. But I think it will be dangerous if the provider does not fully mention about foods’ condition and ingredients because of food hygiene and allergy problem.

If there is a food sharing app that combines with social dining concept, do you want to use it? How do you think about it? I think it will be great to eat together and meet the new people. Also, it will be very meaningful if we can prevent our wasting foods. But I think it will be better to use rated system including the host’s profile and place for the safety.

Interview Do you usually cook at home? How often?

Do you have any idea of the way to share the excess food?

Normally I would try to cook every day. Or at least stock up during the weekend. So I would only need to cook only 1-2 times a week.

Yes. Food Sharing Bank. Food Sharing service sponsored by Vons and USPS.

What kinds of foods do you usually cook?

Do you know the app “OLIO”? If not, tell me your experience after using the app.

Asian… I tend to mixed my own fusion recipe.

I heard that you live alone. When did you begin to live alone? Is there any problem when you cook at home?

Amy Huang Age: 25 Gender: Female Occupation: Student Location: Pasadena Features: Active, Talkative

I just started to live alone this term but I have been managing my own ingredient since last year since I don’t share with my cousin. It’s harder to grocery shop when it’s only for one person because the amount is so little. And I also have limited amount of time to go back and forth to supermarket multiple times.

How do you manage foods which expiration dates near or excess food? I would cook them, freeze them, or simply just share them to friends to hardly cook.

Have you ever donated your foods? Yes

If yes, to where and how? If not, why? Cook it and Feed (Donate to) my hungry design student friends.

32

Good idea but still afraid to meet a stranger one on one in front of my house.

If there is a food sharing app that combines with social dining concept, do you want to use it? How do you think about it? I would definitely use it. There’s a lot of food waste that people produce everyday. Why not use it to help and meet new people?

Interview Do you usually cook at home? How often?

Do you have any idea of the way to share the excess food?

Not often these days. I cook once a week.

Maybe long lasting food such as jerky would be.

What kinds of foods do you usually cook?

Do you know the app “OLIO”? If not, tell me your experience after using the app.

Steaks because there are only a couple of things I need to cook it.

I heard that you live alone. When did you begin to live alone? Is there any problem when you cook at home?

Sung Woo Chun

I have lived alone since I moved to CA from the east coast. There is no problem when cooking at home but since it’s only myself, I feel there are lots of food wastes. In addition, it’s hard for me to manage leftovers.

Age: 28 Gender: Male Occupation: International Sourcing Location: Irvine Features: Sociable, Busy with working & studying atst

How do you manage foods which expiration dates near or excess food? Mostly toss them away after cooking or put it in the freezer depending on what food it is.

I think it’s easy to use. Some users explicitly describe where they got the good with expiration date but others don’t seem to. If there is a required step for the uploader that needs to take before sharing, it would be more reliable. For example, a person cannot post until he shows an expiration date or front/back pictures. The purpose of the idea is awesome because it will help local communities economically as well as environmentally.

If there is a food sharing app that combines with social dining concept, do you want to use it? How do you think about it? I think it will be a great chance to make the new network as well as do food sharing. If there is a required step for the uploader to show enough information about what she or he has right now and the place, it would be more reliable.

Have you ever donated your foods? I never thought about it.

If yes, to where and how? If not, why? Because foods are hard to donate. What if my food can harm others? Who got the blame? I would donate snacks or processed foods packed in cans but not my food in the refrigerator.

33

Findings

How donate? People want to share their foods but do not know exactly about the ways. Sometimes they try to share with friends but they often just throw it away.

34

How manage?

Safety problem

Limit for menu selection

They usually cook only for one person so buy small amounts but it is no easy and annoying. Some try to keep the leftover in small container while others just throw it away after eating.

They are interested in food sharing app but still afraid to meet a stranger one on one in front of their house. They think it needs a required step for the uploader before sharing like showing photo of expiration date or front and back.

Cooking alone sometimes set limit on menu selection(It’s hard to cook steak at home).

Feel Lonely The main problem for people who live and cook alone is usually the leftovers but sometimes eating alone makes them feel so lonely.

Project goals

Project brief

Sharing food not to make waste!

Make a habit of food sharing even with small amounts not to make food waste.

How? - Share with people who live near - Make a donation to charity or the homeless Sharing with whom? Friend / Neighbors / People who have common interests The unknown / The homeless Who is the main target audience? Regarding household size, the relationship is not proportional. (Two occupants do not dispose of twice as much food waste as one occupant.)

Design Hypothesis Food waste is made worse because people do not know how to share or donate their remaining foods. We propose an app which helps people to get the information about how they can share their foods with whom, and the safe place. We believe this will reduce food waste, and make their life less lonely because they will have the opportunity to meet people and cook together with the shared foods.

Where? Home / Safe place - Grilling area at park or apartment Sharing kitchen / Restaurant (ex. where runs only after 4PM) How could it be habit? Find safe place and people who have common interest. 37

:)

She sits on the couch with getting to feel comfortable. She starts to cook and then eat alone. The food is really delicious!

Amanda goes to the market and buy some ingredients and foods.

She puts remaining ingredients and leftovers into the refrigerator.

3 days later She has spent busy time doing a ton of tasks.

:( 52

Finally Friday night! She just wants to whip up some simple dishes and take a rest at home.

When she opens her refrigerator, there are lots of old foods and just small amounts of remaining ingredients and it’s not enough for cooking.

She is getting hungry but she thinks it’s too much trouble to go to the market right now. Also, she felt lonely suddenly and doesn’t want eat alone today.

She just threw away leftovers and feels guilty.

She call her friends to eat dinner together.

Touchpoints of the approach scenario

55

Create an approach scenario(text) On Friday night, Amanda comes home from work at office. She just grabbed a snack for lunch because of tons of freelance works so she is very hungry now. She steps into the kitchen and opens her refrigerator. She slowly looks over what she has. Soon she realizes she has lots of leftovers and foods expiration date nears or looks bad already. She throws them away and then she only gets some ingredients like a half of onion and handful of mushrooms. However, she does not want to go to the market or eat alone. So, she uses “the system” and starts to find cooking nearby events for today. “The system” automatically lists out the events with safe sharing kitchens in order of distances. She looks through them and “the system” notifies the date and time, people’s profiles, their common interests and even what kinds of ingredients are so far gathered. But she cannot find interesting events so she decides to host an event. “The system” helps her to find available cooperative sharing kitchens and make 56

a reservation. By using “the system”, she lets people know about the location of sharing kitchen and what kinds of ingredients she has right now. And she adds that, if possible, she wants to make a pasta with tomato sauce tonight. About 30 minutes later, “the system” tells her that four people will attend the events and they have other ingredients like linguine and tomato sauce. At 7PM, they meet at the sharing kitchen. They make a tomato pasta and share foods they brought together. Through “the system”, they already check their profiles and interests so that they can easily get closer. After the events, she wants to save her profile, preference and her location for future events and let “the system” to inform her whenever the new event schedules are set.
