OMNICELL: XT CABINET Omnicell specializes in automated pharmaceutical and general hospital products that assists nurses and pharmacists in reducing the amount of human error in drug delivery today. With patient safety in mind, the entire process from the acceptance of the medication in the hospital to the final delivery into the patient is controlled, organized, and tracked. With the aesthetic of the previous generation and current generation of automated cabinets in mind, I was part of the team that designed many of the graphical layouts and form factors in the newest line of cabinets that was released in December 2016.

7

FORM GENERATION I was in charge of front fascia handles for an accessory cabinet. Following the goals of security, ease of use and an aesthetic that would create a family of products, we explored a variety of elements that would capture these ideas.

These cabinets are highly secure, allowing only access for authorized nurses. I assisted in creating graphics for this user centric product in the contact card, button bar, and rack labeling.

ASPIRE: SPIROMETER This is a design project that focuses on improving the life of men who suffer from asthma. Men’s health is not as commonly discussed or funded compared to women’s health. This opens up a lot of design opportunities in an unexplored area.

Nathan Wong

Males with asthma are commonly perceived as weaker and more vulnerable. This is partially due to the perception in the appearance of the medical products and the side effects of Asthma. My goal is to help bring awareness without the patients having to feel self-conscious about their condition.

HOW IT WORKS

A Spirometer is a drug free device that works out your lungs by restricting the air you breathe, increasing lung capacity and efficiency over time.

“Hyperventilation reduction techniques can improve asthma symptoms or reduce reliever medication use over 6 to 12 months in adults with poorly controlled asthma and have no known harmful effects” — Rockville (MD): Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality

EXISTING SPIROMETERS These are some of the spirometers on the market today. They are mainly marketed towards dedicated athletes looking for an advantage in endurance and strength in sports. Their appearances vary slightly depending on the target demographic, but all serve the same purpose.

SMOKE

STRESS

NOISE

A TYPICAL DAY By looking into Hiro’s daily life, new opportunities for design can be found. We realized that he is often in the public eye and that he does not want his asthma to become a handicap to his image. Triggers such as poor air quality, stress, and loud noises can cause panic and asthma attacks. Since he is a DJ, he frequently encounters all of these factors.

naywong@gmail.com

19

FASHIONABLE

SOCIAL PERSONA The persona is Hiro, a rising artist in the DJ scene. He lives in Kitazawa, Tokyo, Japan and currently suffers from breathing problems. Some of his favorite activities include collecting clothing, toys, and listening to music. His high attention to detail and desire for personal expression is ultimately reflected in his purchases. His social interaction plays an important role in his personal life and his job. Networking happens almost daily. By examining his preferences and hobbies, I started to form a design language that he would like.

IDEA GENERATING I started by sketching different forms that focused on interactions with the hand. I aimed for a shape that would look sleek and fit nicely in the hand without looking too soft. The final forms were geometric, sleek, and simple.

23

WIREFRAME The app is immersive and encourages the user to return to the app daily. A support network of friends and doctors keeps the user accountable. Real time data is linked from the spirometer to the phone. As the user inhales and exhales, the calendar is also able to track improvements or progress over time.

FINAL PRODUCT The final product is individual and discreet to the user. It is not eye catching, but is accented by bright colors on the inside. Using the product allows for the user to keep up with their health and daily routines without them feeling awkward when around others.

PROSTHETIC LEG Our leg was designed for children ages 6-10 in impoverished areas of Colombia. Our prosthetic leg represents durability, cost consciousness and functionality. With the thought of logistics in mind, our team researched and used materials can all be sourced locally or cheaply from nearby countries.

naywong@gmail.com

29

Colombia is a nation that is scattered with land mines from incidents from war. Children who are curious and play in the fields become victims of triggering a land mine. As a result, they have to live their lives as an amputee. The goal of the project was to design a low cost prosthetic that fits the child’s needs in aesthetics and functionality.

About 30% of all Colombians have difficulty in moving around. Causes: 5% Snake bites 10% Weapons and violence 32% Automotive 48% Diabetes and Genetics 4% Other

PRIMARY GOALS Resistant to weather and terrain Support more than the current user’s weight Perform daily physical tasks Natural motion and movement Comfort for the user Balance and Stability

SECONDARY GOALS Addressing the social stigma Integration back into society without uncanny valley Modularity Intuitive to attach and re-attach Perform recreational activities

TERTIARY GOALS Customization according to the users’ style preferences Fashionable Sustainable Cater to user’s emotional needs Weight reduction in prosthetic

Nathan Wong

32

RESEARCH Our team compiled some of the issues regarding the environment and overall usage around current prostheses. Because of its geographic setting and deep economic issues, Colombia has unique problems that aren’t seen anywhere else.

MATERIALS Our material selection was based on our goals. We chose materials local to Colombia. The hardware used is universal throughout the prosthetic leg. Standard hole diameter, thread, and screws means hardware is easily replaceable and cheap. Interlocking connections ensure stability and strength. The length can be adjusted by adding spacers either between the socket and the joint, or between the pylon and the joint.

CUSTOMIZATION Because the main pylon is wood, it allows for kids to use several methods to customize the look. They can carve their own designs into the surface, or even paint and add stickers on the outside to make their prosthesis their own.

REFRESH : GREEN CLEANING ART KIT This design for the urban family is an activity that everyone can participate in. It is created with environmentally friendly materials and even cleans the environment around them by using reverse graffiti. Reverse graffiti is removing dirt, dust, or particles from an existing dirty surface to produce an image. Unlike regular graffiti, reverse graffiti is designed to fade away over time or until it is washed off.

“Imagine... A city where everybody could draw whatever they liked. Where every street was awash with a million colors and little phrases. Where standing at a bus stop was never boring. Imagine a city like that and stop leaning against the wall - it’s wet.” — Banksy, International Street Artist

PROTOTYPES These laser cut prototypes focused on space efficiency and ergonomics. I realized it was important to be able to easily replace the brush if needed. A minimal amount of glue or hardware makes it easy for kids to use too.

BRANDING AND MANUFACTURING My plan is to first start with a pop-up shop to get the Upgrowth name out on the market. I will encourage the buyers to post and interact with our social media page so we can reach a larger audience. This is a relatively low cost product.

SKOVDE: IKEA PROJECT This project is about cost effective design with the environment in mind. My goal was to create a product for low income families where they could save money. This hanging planter designed to make the initial growing and nurturing process easier and more efficient for first time gardeners. Its main purpose is to become an income generator for low income buyers and to promote a healthier lifestyle regardless of space available.

naywong@gmail.com

55

DESIGN FOR ALL

X

Democratic design brings good design to the many people by combining a mix of form, function, quality and sustainability at an affordable price.

Swedish design is open, innovative, authentic and caring. IKEA is about taking a lead in creating a better life for the people and communities, acting in the best interest of children and support human rights.

Nathan Wong

56

Hanging planters have traditionally required lots of space and permanent installation work. They are often used to accent a room by themselves and chosen for their aesthetic qualities. Both of these are not conditions that apartments can satisfy. Gardeners often resort to DIY solutions to fit their needs.
