DESIGN FOR ALL
X
Democratic design brings good design to the many people by combining a mix of form, function, quality and sustainability at an affordable price.
Swedish design is open, innovative, authentic and caring. IKEA is about taking a lead in creating a better life for the people and communities, acting in the best interest of children and support human rights.

ABOUT SKĂ–VDE is hanging planter designed to make the initial growing and nurturing process easier and more efficient for first time gardeners. Its main purpose is to become an income generator for low income buyers and to promote a healthier lifestyle regardless of space available.
4
RESEARCH: MARKET Hanging planters have traditionally required lots of space and permanent installation work. They are often used to accent a room by themselves and chosen for their aesthetic qualities. Both of these are not conditions that apartments can satisfy. Gardeners often resort to DIY solutions to fit their needs.

INSPIRATION I explored different IKEA forms and existing construction methods. A highlight was the form and functional interaction between families of products. IKEA’s material choice and finish became influential to the final design.
8
9
IDEATION: SKETCH I did not end up going in the direction of my earliest sketches, but I was able to learn and apply the value of space management, mobility, and different watering techniques to my final model.
10
11
IDEATION: MODELS
Working on the models finalized my direction by showing what was plausible and cost effective.
12
My final physical mockup was a full scale version. Going full scale allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the user experience and refine my dimensions accurately. After interacting with it, I altered it to be shorter so the plants were easily accessible and watering was less straining. I realized the visual potential in angling the planter cups towards the user. This was something that did not occur to me before this model.
13
IDEATION: DIGITAL The digital renderings provided me with a sense of scale before I had to make a full scale mockup. I realized that a slim profile would be the most beneficial and easiest to move around.

BUILD 1) From the digital models, drawings were made and printed out 1:1 scale.
2) Sheets of plywood were stacked up together to make the rig for the plastic pieces.
3) The paper with the drawings was then trimmed. The wood was sanded so that the surface was smooth and fit perfectly to the curvature of the drawings.
16
4) The HDPE was put in the oven for 300 degrees and then clamped onto the jig. Rods were heated up with a heat gun and then hand bent onto the jig.
5) Birch was chosen for its hardness, resistance to humidity, and for its popular use in many IKEA products. Although not the cheapest, it will be able to last a long time in different conditions.
6) Holes were drilled and countersunk. This completes the IKEA aesthetic of flush hardware.

These parts were bought at retail cost. IKEA can source wholesale prices through a large distribution network, number of suppliers, and its own manufacturers so the cost to manufacture this is very low. Therefore, a selling price of $30 is reasonable and profitable for IKEA.

FUTURE ITERATIONS Future design opportunities include improving the container’s water management and further materials research.
A self-watering container could potentially make the growing process even easier for first timers.
Exploring different finishes for wood and plastic to make the planter more weatherproof would make the system last longer, increasing the value of the buyer’s money.
