Senior Living and Wellness Center This project is senior housing and wellness center located in Downtown Los Angeles’ Skid Row. The central organizing idea for the project is the “courtyard.” The courtyard typology is used to tie the people and programs of this complex together by means of a series of centralized outdoor spaces. A courtyard consists of an enclosed space bordered by buildings, landscapes, or walls that is open to the sky. It has been used for centuries in many disparate cultures as a core space for people to meet and to connect with nature. Courtyards break down the barriers between inside and out to promote indoor to outdoor living. They also provide a natural ventilation system to cool a building, particularly those located in dry, hot climates. The open-air retreats found in this courtyard building provide a welcome space of respite in the dense, hectic and difficult urban setting that defines Skid Row. User Diagram The institution that is supporting my project is a non-profit organization located in LA. It is “WDACS – Workforce Development Aging and Community Services. It is very nearby the building which will help to support the project by sending seniors who are looking for housing, as well as they need some health services. Part of this organization is specifically for the elderly, which is called Los Angles Commission for Older Adults (LACCOA). This provides different types of services, which are: “advise and make recommendations regarding the needs and welfare of Los Angeles County seniors age 60 and older, to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and departments of County government and other entities that provide services to seniors regarding their needs, health, well-being, and rights.” WDACS . Mario Canel is one of the seniors, who suffered from finding a place to live due to his low income, and as he is retired. He becomes homeless because he got evicted from the one-bedroom apartment. After being presented with an eviction notice, Mario Canel fears for his future.

Case Studies Midtown Center Bridges by SHoP Architects

The bridges that wrap around the co-living units are important features of the project. To emphasize its presence and highlight the programmed spaces in the bridges, it is important to take into consideration the texture and transparency that will be incorporated with the prefabricated steel bridges.
The design of the hospital has a strong emphasis on ‘openness and transparency’ towards the public at the same time as forming a protective shelter for the patients. There is also teaching facilities and a public gym on ground level. Private Roof Terraces and Wards on the Upper Levels. There are a total of nine roof gardens, located on different floors, to provide relief in the dense urban setting, away from the heavy traffic.

Roberto Burle Marx: Brazilian Modernist
The architects’ starting point was to define the issue between individual and community space in this kind of building. Assessing the program of an elderly home, the architects wanted not only to work on the social spaces but also to design high-quality private rooms for the individua Each room, or “house”, opens to its own private terrace.
Roberto Burle Marx, a Brazilian artist, was a prominent landscape architect in the twentieth century. His most well-known works include the impressive mosaic pavements on Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach’s seaside avenue and the numerous gardens that adorn Brasilia, one of many large-scale projects he completed in collaboration with renowned architect Oscar Nieme.
This feature allows residents to enjoy the open air in privacy, while at the same time providing effective solar protection from direct southern sunlight. The light is reflected on the white walls before arriving into the rooms. The final form is a clear combination of the void/built sequence of every house.
While his landscape design work is well-known around the world, his work in other media is less well-known. As a result, drawing, sculpture is to theater design, tapestries to jewelry.
Co-Care: A Collaborative Assisted Living.

The Co-Care housing project is an experimental social housing project. The project explores the notion of openness and sharing in collective housing typologies beyond the limitations of the extremely commodified high- rise apartment complexes with while aiming to frame the expanded concept of home that, while preserving individuality and intimacy, is open and tightly connected to the multiple scales and operations of the city.
The systematization of the holes in the facade allows large openings from the floor to the ceiling in each house, with a composition that helps to optimize the lighting in each type.
It is a socially stimulating housing option for seniors needing an extra level of care. Each Co-Care unit includes two sleeping wings, with a private entry accessing two bedrooms and a bathroom. Between each sleeping wing, sliding doors open to a small, shared living and kitchen area. Each four-bedroom unit is intended to house four single adults, two couples or
