BeWell HUB OC: GROUP PROJECT COLLABORATION WITH KATY KADMOUS. DURATION: 5 WEEKS (FALL 2020) BeWell Hub is a movement to create a system of care for mental illness to improve the mental health for the people of the community. Be Well OC brings together a robust, community-based, cross-sector strategy—public, private, academic, faith and others to create a communitywide, coordinated ecosystem to support optimal mental health. The healthcare industry nowadays is increasingly focusing on developing spaces to facilitate healing through wellbeing and positivity. This translates to more biophilic designs and more creative architectural choices such as bright colors and natural-looking materials. The design approach of the psychiatric hospital has a strong emphasis on creating an environment of openness and transparency to welcome the clients, while forming a protective and safe environment at the same time. The building is two stories and is divided based on departments. Outpatients on the ground level and residential on the second. This helps to separate the different types of clients and creates easy in and out access for the outpatients that spend only few hours schedule a week while giving inpatients more privacy on the second level. Three open courtyards placed inside the building integrate nature inside and provide healing garden that are protective and safe for the clients. Moreover, two outside gardens are created to the north west side of the building to connect it with the community wellness and support center and make the entry way pleasant and inviting. The layout of the floor plan goes from more public to more private. Referral wellness, federally qualified health clinic and behavioral health intensive outpatient treatment are access directly from the lobby. A sliding door then separates the public from the semi-private and opens to a corridor with waiting areas along its length that leads to the rest of the departments on the first floor like SUD, CSU, building support, staff and shared residential that is divided on two levels and holds the clients elevators.

SITE PLAN Color selection for materials was based on providing natural light colors that reduce stress and help to form calming feeling. The use of green metal panels with the blue glass refer to the elements of nature and connects the building with it as part of the healing process to create a serene environment. While the use of white walls helps to lighten up the spaces. The structure of the building is steel that follows a grid system, which helps support the courtyards and the cantilevers on the second level. The circulation core is elevated above the building with clerestory windows supported by a large girder. 15”x15” columns, 24”x12” girders, and 10”x5” joists transform the loads to the corrugated metal deck of the second level to end at the concreteslab on grade.

PALM VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER: GROUP PROJECT COLLABORATION WITH KATY KADMOUS. DURATION: 6 WEEKS (FALL 2020) Palm Valley Medical Center is an adaptive reuse project of the Palm Valley Movie Theater on N Litchfield Rd and W McDowell Rd. The new program is medical clinics and urgent care that provide services to the community in goodyear, Arizona, and support to the Abrazo West Medical Campus that is adjacent. The design approach focuses on bridging the relationship between indoor and outdoor on one hand and between staff and patients on the other. It reflects a vision to create a new model of medical facility that accommodates urgent care, abrazo health, cardiology, pain management, internal medicine, strength training rehab, ortho clinic, pediatric, testing and imaging programs, in a convenient, accessible location for patients and visitors. The design focuses on both the patients’ and staff’s well-being, and optimize the healthcare experience by connecting people, and place, while maximizing efficiency and flow in a collaborative and supporting environment. A challenge to create an inviting and comfortable interior space while changing the aspect of enclosed unexciting waiting area is a design strategy that drove the project. For that the main circulation and access to all the clinics is in the center of the project with waiting areas along its length, with three open courtyards, creating a permanent connection with the outside and maximizing sun intake. The project’s main entrance, fully glazed on two levels, maintains visual continuity from the outside to the courtyards inside. Its transparency offers a pleasant and serene atmosphere in the reception hall. Moreover, the material palette consisted of white and light blue to represent the sky as a way to reduce stress with the green planted trees inside offer a calm and relaxing environment for the patients to enjoy. A major key point for the project is to keep as much of the existing bearing walls and structure framing elements from a sustainable approach to develop and enhance the economic vitality of this area in Arizona. The exterior walls and most of the inside bearing ones are preserved. While the second level departments were placed inside the two highest rooms. The only location that used a new grid of beams and columns is the central circulation and entry lobby.

This project is an Urban sanctuary for two user groups. It is a Residential-Density unit with an abundant natural conserving lighting system and generous outdoor space. The site is in LA and the immediate surroundings of the site are the Southwest Museum, which is between the southwest train station and Figueroa St, and Woodside Dr street on the other side. The site’s problem inspired the idea of Sanctuary: noise and activity from the train, traffic on Figueroa Street, and lack of privacy from the adjacent apartment building. Due to some research, the most significant need for people’s experiences in life is having a quiet moment for living. The kind of silence is based on defending Sanctuary To “Nature,” which is a position of refuge, of rest, of acknowledgment of somebody as they seem to be. Human is for the most part hungry for this other quietness, especially when it comes into a place like LA where there is a lot of “Noise Pollution”. For that, the program is based on Urban sanctuary for two user groups. For Residential which creates Density units with rich natural lighting and generous outdoor space. With Gold Line station right-of-way & courtyard. This project is attempting peace and harmony in both indoor and outdoor spaces and public and private programs with different types of levels. The path is moving the pedestrian from areas that are very public to others with semi-public and then something private. The central courtyard, where they can walk and pass by; has 2 different levels. The 1st one is a very public courtyard, so the people that are taking the train can hang out here. The other one is the sunken courtyard, which is located at the parking lot level, so people can exit the parking lot into that courtyard and come up and go into their units. For the next level, which when people go up, there is a courtyard shared by these 5 or 6 units and created a semi-private courtyard—and within these units, there are more private courtyards inside each unit which creates a hierarchy in terms of privacy towards focusing on the sanctuary of nature which lead into Silence that create a place of great power and healing.

WEHO MIXED-USE HOUSING: MODULARITY DURATION: 6 WEEKS (SPRING 2019) The project is in West Hollywood, Los Angeles by the strip of Santa Monica Boulevard. The class was instructed to do a design development set for a mixed-use building with a basement parking level, a podium retail area on the ground floor, and three levels of residential units above that are built on type 5A construction. The design was based on a courtyard typology that services the residential area by providing daylight. All the units are facing the courtyard and having equal visual access to the main streets. The massing of the building takes ownership of the south side where it got to create steps where it is facing south. The exterior finish is from a panelized system of pre-patinated standing seam metal panels. This gives a contrast to the concrete base and makes the residential units act differently from the commercial scenery below, giving a floating look to its diagram.

MAIN ENTRY
SMALL LOT SUBDIVISION: 6 HOUSING UNITS DURATION: 5 WEEKS (SPRING 2019) The project is located in Highland Park, Los Angeles near the Gold Line Station. This is an exercise to understand dimension and spatial organization for a residential unit within a small lot subdivision setting. It is prompted to develop a lot that can contain six two-bedroom apartments and a single three-bedroom apartment. Each unit would have its front yard and access to parking and a shared driveway. The design approach was to create as much accessibility as possible from all directions, as well as creating a useful area between units to be a place where they can collaborate—as it is a courtyard space. The roof angles also provided an opportunity to play with how light would enter the house through angles the sun would hit. A linear approach to the lot helped to divide the different activities within the space. one side is dedicated to the front yard, the alleyway is for the car space, and the middle is where the housing is located. The programming for all units follows a ground floor with a back attached garage, a second floor for the living and dining areas, the third floor for all the bedrooms, and the fourth floor for a balcony access. A detailed complete design development booklet is available upon request, and provided in the portfolio are sample drawings of what can be found on the booklet.

COLLEGE OF THE DESERT EXTENSION CAMPUS: ARCHITECTURE AND FILML DEPARTMENT DURATION: 12 WEEKS (FALL 2019) An education place is not only where students study, but also a place where people see each other and learn from each other. The plan for this project came from a personal experience as a student that went to different schools in three different countries. In a way, schools are somewhat similar to a “mini-city”, where architecture, circulation, and landscape connect and form a physical space. Where students of different majors, along with the teachers create a society. Traditional campus master plan usually highlights the teaching area, while ignoring communication and activity areas. However, to me, schools are not just a place for knowledge and conducting researches, but also a living environment that aims to improve students’ capabilities. I realized that setting outside helps the imagination. From there I decided to do a courtyard type of building because the courtyard space would be a good place for important gatherings, academic exchanges, and scientific discussions. Moreover, studies based on researches have shown that “Students who spend time outside every day are healthier, happier, more creative, less stressed and more alert than those who don’t.” And another study by a professor states that “teaching outdoors makes educators more confident and excited for their work, and more advanced in their teaching strategies.” So, well-designed buildings and pleasant surroundings can lead to better attendance and concentration as well as motivation and self-esteem - factors which can improve performance. Based on these points, I went to study some case studies to find which typology might fit the category of connecting to nature and providing great exterior and interior spaces. I found that courtyard typology has existed for thousands of years since Neolithic settlements. It has been developed as a primary typology. That the court is the heart of the space, where different functions can take place during different parts of the day. For this design of the architectural building, it came from how I would like a studio environment to look like. Where a healthy studio environment is a space that supports the sharing of knowledge, ideas, and experiences. The courtyard in front of the building would also add an architectural element to this environment. Shared with the film program for potential exchange of ideas. And the L shape of the two buildings helps to enclose the courtyard by creating some privacy to the subculture of the architecture major and the filming major. Likewise, the film building, where it’s attached to the architecture and creating a big courtyard in the middle. These two buildings together and sharing an “L” shape is creating one environment for the community; it helps both majors—as both are related to Art—to be together in one hand. 36

MOUNT WILSON SCIENTIST RETREAT: MT. WILSON OBSERVATORY DURATION: 10 WEEKS (FALL 2018) This building is in Mount Wilson, which is one of the peaks of the San Gabriel Mountains, located north of Pasadena. This place is where scientists usually meet to do their tests; The scientists used a combination of astronomical observations and lab experiments to do work. For that, I decided to go in a very different style from any other building that exists on Mount Wilson. This building is a tower that has a vertical circulation that overlooks the view of Mount Wilson and Especially to the California Institute of Technology. It is the main base for scientists. This concept came from three different ideas, and they follow together: a minimum footing, a hill’s slope, and the circulation. The overall idea is talking about circulation that connects to the shape of this building. The other part of this project is nestling on the hill, which is following the slope of the hill. I’ve chosen to touch the ground of this building in a very minimal way, and I sloped the roof to let it fit with the hill site by following the slope. Once I looked inside the building, it becomes a journey in terms of moving between the public round and the service round with the entry that comes in. The structure is an important part to support the idea, but it’s not the idea of this building. The visitors and anyone who will be living there will experience the great view that the building is in; They will experience the Pine trees that surround the whole building. This tower has four-story was inspired to get the visitor’s attention, especially that it very sharp and solid, which it doesn’t look like any other buildings and that what it makes it unique. Also, this building is partly projected off a slope, which is why it is a cantilever. Structurally, it is made of steel rounded columns with joists and steel square beams. The whole building is wrapped with a glazing system to maximize natural light and views of the Mount Wilson Pine trees. The glazing material is the Spandrel Glass, which is in some places has a dark color under it, but on other sides are double space. The frame of the glazing system is panels of spandrel glass that are sealed with each other and connected to the steel column with a T-shape made of streel. The sides part of the tower is made of wood, so that is getting to be related to nature’s materials, which gives a great combination of wood, glass, and steel. Lastly, concrete, which is the flooring system. Also, the bridge, which is made of concrete, so that gives the visitor the feeling that they entered the tower from the bridge. It is to connect people from the bridge to the tower with one material, which is white concrete. 44
