Giving that Turned Viral! by Darrell Knoch

she had an idea. At the end of the day, she would choose two students that she had observed doing something extra helpful or outstanding. Those two students would be rewarded by getting to carry a Gratitude Coin the entire next day. At the end of the day, they would then pass their Gratitude Coin on to someone they had observed doing something exceptional either for the class or for a fellow student, and that student would get to carry the Gratitude Coin the next day, and so on.

How do you touch people each day in a positive way that they will remember? This was a question I asked myself about seven years ago. As I thought the question through, I came up with an idea—I would create a coin that I could give to people as a means of showing my appreciation for them. I designed the coin, which I decided to call a “Gratitude Coin,” had several thousand minted, and have been handing them out to people ever since. Over the years, I have had many rewarding experiences as a result of handing out the Gratitude Coins. Once such encounter occurred about six months ago while I was dining at a restaurant in Scottsdale, Arizona, where I currently live. My waitress did an exceptional job of taking care of me, so as I got up to leave, I handed her a Gratitude Coin and told her that I really appreciated her wonderful attitude and infectious smile. I explained that giving her the Gratitude Coin was my way of letting her know how grateful I was for her excellent service. I said that the coin was magic, and that if she touched it every day, it would help her remember to be more grateful. I told her that being grateful would make her

a happier person. She gave me a big smile and thanked me. As I continued making my exit from the restaurant, a customer tapped me on the shoulder. She told me that she had observed my encounter with the waitress and said that she was very impressed with my act of kindness and gratitude. She told me her name, Rachel Danielson, and said that she was a 3rd grade school teacher. Rachel explained that as a teacher, she was always trying to convey to her students the importance of acts of kindness and gratitude. I gave her a couple of Gratitude Coins and told her I was grateful that she was teaching her kids such a worthwhile lesson. We chatted for a few minutes then went our separate ways. A few weeks later, I got an email from Rachel. She told me that she had been so touched by what she observed at the restaurant that day that she decided to use the two Gratitude Coins I gave her in her classroom. She explained that the morning after she met me in the restaurant, she told her students all about what she had seen me do. She then let her students know that

Rachel said she had been using the Gratitude Coins for several weeks, and her students were really benefiting from it. She went on to say that all the other teachers, the vice principal, and the principal had all come to her classroom to see how the Coins were being used. They saw what a difference it was making in the class and the positive impact it was having on the kids. In fact, the principal wanted to know if the school could buy more Gratitude Coins, so that every teacher could use the coins in the same manner. I told Rachel that I was so gratified and excited about this new way she had thought to use the Coins that I would give them to her free of charge. In exchange for the free Coins, I asked if I could take a picture of the two of us. I also asked if it was okay if I shared her school’s story of how she was using the Gratitude Coins with other schools, and she said that would be fine. About 3 months later, the local NBC station decided to do a story on the school and how they were using the Gratitude Coins. The station asked if I wanted to be part of the story. I went to the station to watch the story they had produced. Afterwards, I did an on-air interview with the anchor, talking about the impact of the Gratitude Coins on the students. During the interview, I told the viewers that I would give Gratitude

Aeature rticle F Coins to any school in the Valley that would use them in the same way Rachel had used them in her school. We received a lot of requests for the Coins from schools in the area, including some local high schools. The response to the story was so great that the TV station decided to do another story, this time from the perspective of a high school that was using the Gratitude Coins. The response to both stories was so great that NBC Phoenix decided to run the story on their 10:00 PM news show. So many people have seen both stories that we are now receiving requests from schools all across the country for a supply of Gratitude Coins to use in their schools. We have even received requests from schools in other countries. Two

months later, we continue to get calls from schools requesting Coins. We regularly receive emails from the schools telling us how the use of the Gratitude Coins is touching both their students and their teachers, making a positive impact on everyone involved. This story shows the exponential affect that a simple gesture of appreciation can have. My desire to express gratitude to those who help me in some way each day has, in the span of less than three months, become a movement that is impacting countless individuals throughout the world. We can change the world, and one person can start that change. Gratitude…Pass it on!

and gave me a huge kiss on the cheek. I laughed and she said “I’m still the Queen of Muggins, don’t think you can beat me.” I laughed and after saying final goodbyes I returned to school to get ready for four more hours of classes. This entire experience taught me a life lesson. People do not always want money, materials, items, and things that are tangible. What people want is love, interaction, and community. And the only way we can truly give love is by giving a portion of our time. Time is invaluable, meaning you cannot put a price on it, and you cannot get a refund on it. Time continues to dwindle here on Earth, and the way we spend our time determines the legacy we leave for others to follow. I used to see giving as materialistic. For many people (including myself) I saw giving correlated with materials, finances, and anything involving a transaction. For me this all changed while in college.

I soon came to realize my role there was nothing more than to be a servant, which I was perfectly fine with. My role included serving lunch, cleaning up, leading the blind to the restroom, playing games, and simply engaging with the members. As I adjusted to the different personalities my purpose at the facility became organic. Listening to many stories, getting to know the people, and most of all gaining their trust was a result of not giving money or items, but by giving one’s time. I realized this is what life is all about. It’s about devoting time and making it life changing.

While attending college in Boston, Massachusetts I had the privilege of working at an adult day center. This facility was located in Cambridge, MA, less than a mile from Harvard University, and gave people from the surrounding communities a place to exercise, socialize, and simply hang out during the day. The program held a little over thirty-five members aging from mid forties to late nineties. As my college year was coming to a close so was my time at the adult day For me it was a learning experience. center. The final day I played a game I had never before worked with adults of “Muggins” (a favorite card game of who had physical and intellectual many of the members) and I ended up disabilities. Some members were blind, losing. Then it came time for me to say deaf, and confined to wheelchairs. As my goodbyes and leave. I will never I got to know many of them, I learned forget one of the members telling me, many came from tough homes, some “Thank you so much for spending time were former military service members with us, not many people just come in who served in WWII, and some were to talk to us.” My heart sank, and then college graduates. another member stood up and said, “Thank you, I’m going to miss you!”

Take Back Your Life and Do Something Big by Judi Moreo

accomplishments, downplay our successes, and hide our brilliance behind the walls we’ve built to protect ourselves from hurt. We become afraid that no matter what we do, we will fail. It’s time to stop letting fear control us and stop ignoring the calling of our hearts. Stop being concerned about the thoughts and comments of others. It’s your choice! You can go through life getting by or you can do something that really matters. It could be something you do for someone else or something you do for yourself. It could even be something you do for the world. One thing I’ve learned over the years is this: It’s just as easy to do something big as it is to do something small. That’s why I get my coaching clients to make a commitment to writing a book, preparing a thought provoking speech, completing a degree, launching a business, or finally, doing an around the world trip. It doesn’t matter what it is as long as it is something that resonates with you and will give you a sense of satisfaction and joy. What matters is that you commit and then do what it takes to make it happen. This time next year, you’ll be a year older and exactly where you are today if you don’t commit to setting a goal and making a change to the way you’ve always done things. Stop playing small. Acknowledge the talents you have and do something with them. Many of us have done something in the past and had people put us down or make negative comments, so we just put that talent on the back burner in order to avoid any further criticism. We stopped trying. We stopped trusting ourselves. We stopped believing. We started shrinking! We

It’s time to take back your life and do something big. Even if you fail, you will have the satisfaction of making the effort and you will know for yourself what you can and cannot do. And you will have had small successes on the way to the goal you were attempting to reach. Take time to sit with yourself and listen to what your heart is saying. Journal. This is a place to be honest and authentic, to write down your feelings, desires and ideas. A journal is a place to plan what you want and how to get it. One of the benefits of journaling is that you can go back, read, and based on that plan, figure out how to get what you desire. It’s also a place to find out what you don’t want so that you can get the little things out of the way and make room for doing something big. Write goals that will inspire you to use your talents to accomplish what you want deep in the recesses of your soul. Give yourself permission to operate outside of your comfort zone. Take action steps that you are afraid to take. Ask yourself, “If the world were perfect, and money were no object, what would I do?” And then, do that! Be careful not to share your big ideas with the people who have told you that you can’t succeed. Share your ideas with people who believe in you and can assist you in making your dreams happen.

Last year, one of my coaching clients wanted to write a book. She had no idea where to begin and really didn’t believe she could accomplish her dream in a year, but I believed in her. She had a great story to tell as well as the passion and desire to tell it. She just needed someone like me who could show her the path, keep her on schedule, and hold her accountable. It is now less than a year later and her completed manuscript is being edited and submitted for publication. You can do what you want to do. You first have to know what it is, commit to it, and then do whatever it takes to make it happen. Give this gift to yourself, and receive it with an open heart. This year, you can accomplish something big!

Article Giving... by Lisa Paolo

on me or my family to give our time, or even money, we give without ever expecting to get it back. If we expected it back then it is not a gift or giving from our hearts. The best gift I receive is when I watch my children hold the door for someone older or asking someone, “Can I help you with anything?” or picking out a sweater for “Pat.” Anyone they have done this for is always taken aback because they are not expecting it. I just smile because then I know I have taught them well and my gift of giving will live on.

Life is full of giving and receiving. As a mother of five I try to teach my children to emulate a giving spirit rather than being just a taker. It is difficult in this day and age to make sure that the values we want to instill don’t go by the wayside when children can find information at their fingertips and technology keeps tempting them with a new toy. I find the fastest way that I can teach this or anything I want my children to learn is to be a role model for them with my actions. My children have eyes all around them and are always observing my every move. That’s why it is so important for me to walk the walk and talk the talk that I want them to follow. I hope that this is what they see: I hope they see that I give when I am asked. Whenever I see someone on a corner asking for money, I give whatever I can find in my car. I don’t know what they need it for and maybe sometimes they will use it for something I wouldn’t approve of, but that doesn’t matter to me, I still give because they asked. My children now

know “Pat,” who sits on our corner with a small sign. We bring him food, clothing, and money. More importantly are the few moments we spend with him waiting for the light to change, just asking how he is doing. I hope they see that I give when I am not asked. In my business practice I always try to give more than people are expecting. I will not finish until I get the job done and over deliver in the process. I’ve learned to listen to what people need more than talking to them and then giving them what they have asked for. If I see an elderly person heading for a door or dropping something on the floor, I stop and help. If a friend seems out of sorts or worried, I ask what can I do to help. To me, giving means more than just giving money or something of material value. It means giving my time, kindness, a shoulder to cry on, or a helping hand that I can give another person whether they have asked for it or not. To give is to love someone, and when you give it comes from your heart. When friends or relatives call

Giving to Ourselves by Dee Wallace

returned back to us as an enormous hug from the universe. Want to give more? Give more to yourself, and then share that. Want to receive more? Give more to yourself and then send it out. Love yourself so much that the energy of all wants to rush in and take care of you, giving so much that you have even more to share with the world.

I want to talk about giving. Giving to ourselves. Usually when we think about giving, it centers around what we are giving to someone else, the world, or society: What is my purpose in helping the world, what is the thing I can give my beloved, what is the contribution I can give humanity? But the love and acknowledgment for the magnificence of the self is where the circle of giving and receiving begins. It is the “recigive” of a great hug where the energy giving and the energy receiving happens in the continuous cycle of creation, simultaneously. Like the breath of life itself, one must breathe in so they may breathe out and keep the circle of life in motion.

and acknowledged within ourselves, can be seen and shared with others. This is done by honoring the feelings we feel, and the belief systems that support the expansion we desire and deserve. The universe does not deliver to unworthy energy. So to hold ourselves unworthy holds the universal giving away from us. So it behooves us to honor ourselves with all belief systems that support the Gods of free will that we are; in the manner we choose. When we create ourselves as love, joy and freedom we create a being that the universe can give back to, because we create a universe of us that supports the belief system that we are worthy to receive the gifts.

It is freedom in embodiment when we choose to honor and give to ourselves the acknowledgment of how valuable and magnificent creators we are. We have always been destined to remember that, to embrace that, and to share that. The more we live in the grace of power, the more we give others the right to do the same. And that is the greatest gift one can give: The empowerment of another to create themself. We must fill our own well so we have water to share with our neighbor. We must feed our own health to be the vital force that physically can help others. We must know our magnificence so we may be the mirror that others reflect their own in. That is the highest giving. That is a choice and a change in perspective. But it is the truth. And we know what they say about the truth: It sets us free.

“Kandee G’s favorite book of 2011”

Giving to ourselves means taking time to love ourselves and recognize that we are indeed, the creative force itself. We are the glorious people of free will that decides, chooses, commits, and takes action with feeling and emotion towards the thing we are creating. And the greatest thing we create is us. Ergo, the giving to ourselves of love, joy and gratitude is the beginning of the creation equation. Then that which we have given

So it stands to reason that the more we give love, honor and glory to ourselves through divine love, the more it goes out, circulates, and is

professionals have expected. Where is the good news?

It seems that you cannot pick up a magazine or read a news article about health trends without reading about the plight of Americans’ ever-expanding waistlines. Medical professionals have been sounding a dire warning for many years regarding the obesity epidemic. We are told that incidence of chronic diseases will continue to increase as we become increasingly overfed, overweight, and undernourished. But, there is some good news in wellness trends, and many people aren’t even aware of the fact that it is indeed possible to overcome obesity and health issues in a relatively short period of time. In many ways, it seems that we have been asking for this. As a nation, we have certain expectations regarding advancements in every area of our lives. We expect technology to expand rapidly and for our lives to be improved because of it. We expect goods and services to be delivered to us in more and more efficient ways. We expect medical professionals to address our health needs as rapidly as the diagnoses are made. Unfortunately, there has been little good news on ways to address the obesity epidemic. The standard advice to eat healthy and exercise has not yielded the mass weight loss and fitness that wellness

The good news is that there are indeed advances in research regarding fat loss and ways to improve health and reduce incidences of chronic disease. While some people in the wellness industry believe in a “one solution for every person” approach, those with their fingers on the pulse of successful weight loss stories realize that each person’s unique needs and what will help their body return to balance must be considered. One of the major barriers to helping people who are suffering from obesity and poor health is the belief that nothing can be done. The myth that genetics and age are the primary factors preventing people from achieving great health stops many individuals from even attempting to make the changes they need. The first step to bringing one’s body back into balance and losing excess body fat is simply making up your mind that great health is possible. People who understand the power of their personal beliefs more easily accept this concept. And, while many individuals apply this to other areas of life, such as their professional life, interpersonal relationships and other goals, many do not make the connection between beliefs and physical health. A shift in beliefs is needed in order to make a permanent shift in the body. The ideal fat loss program would address both the psychological and spiritual issues regarding overweight as well as the physiological issues. In the past, weight loss professionals simply gave those struggling with weight loss a diet program to follow, expected them to follow it and achieve permanent success. With a 90% and higher failure rate, the standard diet

and exercise advice has not proven to be the solution most people have been looking for. Today, wellness teams blend advanced medical treatments for obesity with psychological support. This marriage effectively guarantees success because confidence and belief in success go hand-in-hand with a sound medical fat loss program. The first step toward having your own good news story is to address your beliefs regarding the road to great health. Ask yourself if you truly believe it is possible to reach your wellness goals. If you have lost and regained weight one or more times, chances are you have some issues outside of the physiological ones that need to be addressed. Attempting weight loss without creating a plan to deal with how you will overcome the inner barriers is not likely to yield lasting, long-term results. Choose a program that will balance every aspect of who you are: body, mind and spirit. No matter what, be sure to expect good things and good news on your journey to great health.

Feature A rticle Healthy Living Makes You an Asset to Everyone Around You by Dana Gore purpose creates a sense of owning responsibility for how we take care of ourselves. Using nutrition as an example, given that society is loaded with choices as to what we can feed our bodies, we have the opportunity to exercise options. I believe we were given the gift of free will as a means of developing personal growth and this is one way to use it. When you intentionally decide to eat foods that nourish your body with the nutrients needed for optimal health, this creates self-empowerment, and when you make such choices especially around those you love, you are being one heck of a good example.

I remember back when I was in my late teens and early twenties how much value I had placed on things. The more clothes, beauty products and other objects I could own, the more content I felt, and if there was enough money (or available credit) left over to share the “wealth” with my loved ones, all the better. This, to me represented the act of giving, yet as a result I was a packrat who was always in debt. I was never at peace and my family was concerned about the way I was running my life. I was living a never ending cycle of frustration, thanks to my careless habits, and while I knew I meant well as a human being, I didn’t know how to stop bringing fear and worry to the lives of my loved ones. And then one day out of the clear blue, a thought came to me that went something like this: In order to develop inner-peace, which is what you really desire, you have to quit being a liability to others and become an asset to their lives.

22

Quit being a liability to others and become an asset to their lives. What did that mean? I hadn’t yet heard of Robert Kiyosaki, so I didn’t understand assets and liabilities, but somehow I knew what this meant. It meant that I was living my life in such a way that whether financially or energetically, I was creating a cost to those around me. It wasn’t my intention, but that’s what was happening. This philosophy began a turning point for me because it made perfect sense. The way to show someone how much you love them is to bring peace into their lives rather than stress. I then began INHALING all of the self-improvement information I could find and it all started coming together. This is what I learned. The way to bring value to someone’s life is to live your own best life around them and a great way to make this happen is with health and fitness. The act of making choices that are on

Since many of us become who we are around the most, doesn’t it make sense that if we take care of our bodies (a behavior that stems from making up our minds to do so), that we are inevitably teaching those around us to do the same? As we take charge of our health, we become a shining example for the ones we love (and sometimes the ones we don’t even know are watching). So to answer the question I posed earlier…how does one become an asset to another person’s life? By becoming a dignifying energy that feeds a person’s spirit.

My epiphany, in a nutshell, was a message telling me that the key to giving something of genuine value to those I care about the most was to be a good example. Although I still consider shopping to be fun and I love giving people presents, it is no longer how I define value. Nowadays, I choose to be a source of inspiration whenever possible and refrain from causing people to worry about how I live my life. Well-being brings me inner-peace, which I now strive to share. This is my definition of giving.

Giving or Recieving? Both are Blessings by Liz Sterling

Giving and receiving go hand in hand, but we’ve been taught, “It is better to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35) I truly believe it is just as blessed to receive as to give, yet many of us have enormous confusion in this area – some with giving, some with receiving, and some with both.

ask for help, advice or just a good listening ear. My readiness to help would cause me to lean into them and offer my opinion or observation. But then, I remembered my assignment and watched as my body language changed. To listen and to help consciously, I had to lean back – taking in more than I was giving. To truly help and give counsel, I had to take a step back to RECEIVE the information. Only then could I truly give what was needed in the moment. I had an AHA experience and realized that in order to give, I must become present in the moment, take a new stance, create more space, receive, and then, in true service to the other, I can give.

Giving is modeled by our parents, and taught in church or synagogue. It’s an especially familiar role for women who are conditioned to be caregivers. Giving is generally viewed as honorable and praiseworthy.

Author and spiritual teacher Shakti Gawain said, “Receiving and giving are opposite energies that are inextricably linked together in the natural flow of life, like inhaling and exhaling. If one aspect of that cycle doesn’t function, the entire cycle ceases to function and the life force cannot move freely.”

Some people feel better about themselves when they give. As Walt Whitman said, “When I give, I give to myself.” The more common problem is the inability to truly receive. It’s more difficult for many people simply because of cultural conditioning.

It is great to give and it can feel like an elixir. We give of ourselves, we give gifts, we give advice, and we give our love. It is easy to address giving. The real opportunity is to feel into receiving. From there, we can truly give.

I’ve always been a giver, a doer and caretaker. It’s easy for me to listen, to advise, and to guide. One day, my Rabbi friend asked me to practice listening as my weekly assignment so I could be a good giver. “What,” I cocked my head in confusion, declaring, “I am a good listener. I help people all the time.” And he replied, “This week, listen consciously.”

William A. Ward, an American anthropologist reminds us, “Before you speak, listen. Before you write, think. Before you spend, earn. Before you invest, investigate. Before you criticize, wait. Before you pray, forgive. Before you quit, try. Before you retire, save. Before you die, give.”

Throughout the week, on many occasions, friends and clients would

Dream Big Showcase Article

Jacob Jeffries: Living the Dream Interviewed by Hank Eder

What Exactly is the Dream Big Showcase? Do you know someone who had a dream and went for it? Are they living their dream despite the odds? Each issue of Nothing But Good News Magazine will feature a unique individual that threw caution to the wind and went after their dream. Submit your ideas to Arlie@KandeeG.com There’s almost a cliché about starryeyed boys who want to grow up to be rock stars, but one young prodigy from South Florida is living the dream. Jacob Jeffries has been playing piano since the age of five and writing original music at the age of 10. Now 24 years old, Jacob has just released Tell Me Secrets, his fourth album with the Jacob Jeffries Band. Currently his band is touring, and has opened for some major acts, including Sugar Ray, Gin Blossoms, Pat McGee, and they have performed at Sundance Film Festival and South By Southwest. The Miami Herald called Jacob “one of Miami’s best and most-buzzed about independent singer-songwriters.” Jacob attributes his love of music to the influence of his family. “My parents and my sister, we were all very passionate about music,” Jacob said. “From a very early age I played piano. It was definitely more that a hobby to me, but not a career choice until about the age

28

of 10, when I wrote my first songs.” The first two songs were about an old man and a girl from Jacob’s fifth grade class. “When I wrote those first songs I realized that was the only way to really get my point across to people. So I started my journey there. Since then we have played all kinds of gigs along the way – big, small, silly. My first band had a steady gig at the Starbucks in Pembroke Pines, Florida. We started getting a following there. People would come by to hear the music,” Jacob said. Jacob says the life of a professional musician can be largely uncharted territory. “I’m fortunate enough to be paid for making music now, but when you’re hacking away at a job that doesn’t have any rules, regulations, or foreseeable guarantees, you’rehappy enough to get paid sometimes with a meal ticket and a couple of beers,” Jacob chuckled. “So I know I’m fortunate, and I try to keep a grasp on

what’s ahead – on the tangible goals and the intangible, unrealistic goals. I mean, who doesn’t want to be the next Paul McCartney? It’s a journey, no doubt, and you have to be working it every day.” Some of the most cited obstacles in the rock music business are fierce competition and fan freakiness, but not to Jacob. “One of the biggest obstacles,” he said, “is the freaking internet! It’s like a big monster that everyone is trying to tackle at the same time. It’s such a giant platform for you to get your point across and your music out to people, but it can suck up so much of your time. I mean nobody’s a master of it. For example, you can be on Facebook for five hours to connect with five people. But then, on the other hand, you hear about a kid who posts something and reaches five million people.” Although the music world is rife with stories about so-called “overnight

by professionals, including writing, singing, dancing, sets, and technical production. At thirteen, Jacob attended the Lovewell summer program, and sparked an immediate, long-lasting friendship with Ryan McCall. Now ten years later, Jacob reunites with Ryan during the summers at Lovewell, where Jacob serves as a counselor to the current group of talented teens. “Ryan was special to me,” Jacob said. “He turned me on to so many different artists I would not have known about – bands like Phish, Wilco, or Ben Folds.” These bands became influential in Jacob’s musical choices.

success,” the reality is often far different. To find their way up from the trenches, bands need to work hard. “It’s a combination of so many different things. There’s no right, wrong, real or fake – there’s no one way to do it,” Jacob said. “You’re reaching out to all types of people, from all walks of life, asking them to digest your music. It’s not like you’re hiring me to fix your window, and if I do it wrong I don’t get paid. The listening public, they’re the ones who make the rules. You just have to learn to do your best to cater to the ones that are digging you, and not worry about those who don’t. That’s what really demoralizes a lot of people out there. It takes time. And while there are some overnight sensations, my philosophy is the quicker you burn up, the quicker you fizzle out.” Jacob points out that in music, like any other profession, your experiences are what shape you as a professional. “You learn from your mistakes and your trials and tribulations. Like why didn’t this gig work out, or why was this the best gig ever? You learn to walk away

from each experience with a lesson. It’s all about the experience.”

What advice would Jacob give to aspiring young musicians? “As corny as it sounds, I would say that everybody isn’t going to love you. So do what you feel is right, and keep going.”

Jacob cites a wide range of musical influences. “Lyrically my bigges influences have been John Lennon and Paul Simon. Melodically it’s been Paul McCartney.” Jacob also cited other “classic rock” influences, such as the Grateful Dead, and Bob Dylan. There are several individuals Jacob sites as mentors in his life. “I think the mentor position in anybody’s life is very, very huge,” Jacob said. “And for people who are fortunate enough to have a mentor, it can be so much more than a friend or a sibling relationship. My parents played that role when I was young. Everything they did was awesome! But I was also lucky to have this guy named Ryan McCall. I met him at a program called LoveWell.” The Lovewell Institute of Creative Arts holds summer programs for teens, where the kids get together and write, choreograph, compose, design, and perform a full-length musical guided

The Jacob Jeffries Band’s latest album, Tell Me Secrets, is available on iTunes. Jacob’s music is an eclectic blend of rock and pop influences, with Jacob’s piano at the core, accompanied by strong vocals and catchy melodies. The Blessing Way by Margaret Ann Lembo

Blessing Others. Think of every person, place, or thing that makes you feel blessed to have them in your life. Include animals, old friends, your bank teller, and so on. Easy, right? Remember to include things that are really ordinary that you might take for granted like electricity, running water and easy access to food. Take a moment right now. What is on your first list?

Each day we have the opportunity to be grateful for the blessings in our lives. Even when life seems the toughest, there are always people, places, and things to focus on who bring us comfort and joy. A daily practice of gratitude cultivates the gifts of joy, love, kindness, and compassion. These gifts fertilize the grounds of your life experience to multiply gratitude in your life. Because of the basic universal principle of “whatever we focus on becomes manifest,” you can intentionally create things in your life that you will be grateful for. Here is a simple exercise. I refer to it as the Blessing Way. Each step is referred to as a practice because you will need to practice staying focused on the gratitude and blessings for each person, place, or thing. Everyone has incessant chatter or the “hamster wheel effect” going on with thoughts about this, that or the other. So take the time to practice to stay focused on just the blessings and gratitude. First Practice: Feeling Blessed and

30

www.kandeeg.com

Second Practice: Gratitude for those who are challenging. What? Yep – Think of every person, place or thing that has caused you angst, heartache, or some trouble and give gratitude. Yes! I am serious. These are situations that have probably taught you the most. While this second practice is a bit harder to do, let yourself acknowledge and recognize that the people or situations who have caused you the most problems are the ones who helped you to grow. Think of it as the sand in the oyster to create a beautiful pearl. And now pause to contemplate who is on this list and start sending blessings their way. Third Practice: Be an Open Vessel to receive blessings. Now it is your turn to receive blessings. Use your imagination and visualize that you are an empty vessel, like a big bowl or basket. Imagine or feel blessings pouring in to this vessel – you – from all the people, places, animals, or situations that are so grateful for you. You don’t have to know who or where they are coming from. Stop right now and allow yourself to be. Just be. Be the empty vessel that is filling up with blessings and gratitude and know that you are love and you are loved. Consciously breathe in

the blessings and gratitude. There are many people whose lives you’ve touched and you might never know who or where – but there are many who are grateful to you. The practice of gratitude, in whatever form you choose, provides countless benefits for you and those around you. It is very simple.

Article Giving is a Win-Win Situation by Hank Eder

things. Later that day I helped him load the bike into his father’s truck, and he smiled like the sun and shook my hand. Then he did something that surprised me. He reached into his pocket and retrieved a small, beatup pocketknife. “I want you to have this,” he said. “You can use it when you go fishing, and when you use it you can remember me.” I accepted the little knife with gratitude and shook Alfonso’s hand once again.

There is an old adage that goes something like this: “In order to receive, you must first give.” Like so much in our lives, this can be interpreted in oh, so many ways. On a material level, it’s all too easy to oversimplify the concept. For example, does anyone ever give money or goods to charity because they want something in return? I mean, beyond the tax deduction, we don’t give to charity because we expect material return. We do it for a number of reasons: We believe it’s the right thing to do; it helps us clear things out of our homes and lives that might benefit others; and it makes us feel good about ourselves. That last reason – feeling good about ourselves – can’t be stressed enough. Instead of reacting to all the daily messages in popular culture aimed at making us feel powerless, what could be more empowering than finding outlets that really make us feel good about ourselves? For me, giving has

always been high on that list. When I was 10 years old, my parents bought me a bicycle. The bike arrived with some minor issues, and we called the store about getting them repaired. The store delivered a second bicycle, but never took back the original. After repeated calls to them, they said it was too much trouble to pick up the first bicycle, so we could just keep it. I asked my mother, “What am I going to do with two bicycles?” Her reply led to a lasting lesson about giving. There were some gardeners who worked at the apartments in Miami Beach where we lived. One of them had a son my age. My mother suggested, “Why don’t you ask Alfonso if he wants the bike next time you see him?” A few weeks later the boy showed up with his father. To this day I remember the sparkle in Alfonso’s eyes when I offered him the bike. I pointed out that it had a few small issues. Alfonso laughed and said his hobby was fixing

Later I discussed the exchange with my mother. “Didn’t it make you feel good giving that bike to the boy?” she asked. I nodded in agreement. “That’s why he gave you the knife. Not because he felt obligated, but because it made him feel good to give you something.” The Truth of that lesson has always remained with me. It made me realize how important it is to do things that make you feel good, especially when the same act can also make someone else feel good. It’s a win-win situation. As I grew older (and hopefully wiser), I came to understand a deeper meaning of giving. It’s not all that hard to give of coin and material goods, but what about something more intangible, like always putting your “best foot” forward to be a positive role model to people you meet? To me, this is a very high form of giving. Sometimes people just need some small kindness to really change the tone of their day. This can be as simple as picking up an item someone has dropped and handing it to back with a smile. Sometimes a simple act can have an uplifting effect on someone’s life. About a month ago, I found an elderly woman in a stalled-out car in a grocery store parking lot. She looked so frail

and forlorn. I told her I had jumper cables, and that brightened her up a bit. However, after pulling up next to her car and trying to get it running, there was no hope for that old battery. “What am I going to do?” she sighed? “I have a cell phone,” I offered. “Maybe we can get a tow truck.” She said her nephew worked close by, and he could come help her. I showed her how to use the cell phone, and her nephew agreed to pick her up. Even though we live in a quiet, country town, I didn’t want to leave her alone, so I sat with her until her nephew arrived. He had his own cell phone and a membership in the auto club, so I knew all was well. As I was leaving, the young man tried to offer me money. “No, thanks,” I smiled. “I did this just to be neighborly.” He said he appreciated that, and he handed me a card with his name and phone number. “Please let me know if I can do anything for you to repay this kindness.” I told him I might some day, but also suggested he could repay that kindness to me by simply doing something kind for someone else. He nodded, smiled,

and turned to go. I no longer have Alfonso’s little pocketknife, but I’ll always remember what I learned from his generous gift. For me, the real heart of giving is the notion of returning some of the blessings that life has so generously gifted to me. It makes me feel good about myself. Now that’s what I really call a win-win situation.

Article Non-attachment and the Gift of Giving by Rosanne Calabrese AP

When I first became a practitioner, I was extremely excited at the notion of giving advice to patients so that I could aid them in achieving optimal health and wellness. It was to my dismay to learn that not everyone who sought out a natural medicine practitioner necessarily wanted to receive all of the information one had to offer. I was taken aback by individuals who agreed that what I was offering could help, yet they were unwilling to take the steps to get there. I was confused, and at times frustrated. I didn’t understand the mindset. Then I realized it had nothing to do with the patient’s mindset, but more with mine. I was attached to the outcome of giving and my ego was offended by the disinterest in my gift! As I contemplated the larger picture, I There are many forms of giving: Giving came to the realization that all giving, money, tithing, donating possessions even medical advice must come first or time, giving advice, giving a job or from love. giving a helping hand. Whatever form or forms of giving you choose in your life, the true gift of giving is not what is given but the way it is given and thus received. To truly give is to give from the heart and with love. As a practitioner of natural medicine, I have learned there is a give and take that occurs when working with patients and their health issues. Providing acupuncture, herbs or health advice, I believe, must always come from the heart. When sharing from the heart, there is no longer attachment to the outcome; no expectations of what “should be”, but an understanding that the gift presented may or may not be acknowledged or accepted. Often times giving advice, whether medical or otherwise, is with a belief that the advice offered should always be accepted. This is where ego comes in and loves gets squeezed out. The “giver” need only present the gift. It is the receiver who chooses what to do with it.

When we let go of ego or attachment we can give freely and easily with joy. If we allow ego or attachment to the outcome of the gift to be part of the process, it can turn us off to the wonderful gift of giving. I believe it is our nature as spiritual beings to give freely of the heart and with love, and

when we allow that nature to come forward, the gifts are boundless.

Such as: “Yes. I do practice being selfish at times, so that I can restore and refuel my energy, which empowers me to give more of my best self to others.” Since there can be no do-overs, I am happy to have this opportunity to clarify why it’s okay to be selfish when it is used to bring balance into your way of being. For total well-being, there must be a circulating ebb and flow of giving and being selfish and also of giving and receiving. Too much of one or the other can cause a rippling effect of imbalances that flows out to every area of your life, short circuiting your personal growth and bliss.

Many of us equate self-love with being selfish. If being selfish means taking care of number one so we can have more to give, then please, let’s be selfish. The key is to be aware of whether or not you are being predominantly selfish or predominately giving. There must be a balance to avoid feeling stuck or stressed out being one or the other. Once, at a women’s conference I was attending, one of the speakers was making her point about giving value to prospective clients with an emphasis on “giving.” She posed a few questions to the audience, and then, for some reason, she locked in on me and said, “If I asked you if you are selfish, what would you say, yes or no?” I answered “yes.” My stomach tightened as I heard faint gasps and murmuring from the women in the audience. Apparently, my answer had surprised some of them. The speaker looked at me again

and said, “Wrong answer, but at least you’re honest.” In the hallway, during our break, a few people walked up to me and thanked me for being honest. I agreed that my answer had not helped the speaker make the point she was going for, but hardly was it a “wrong” answer. Still, I enjoyed the speaker and her message. That moment was a surprise for both of us. In retrospect, had I been more present and not having an outof-body experience, I could have answered in a way that would have been of more value to the audience.

Article Giving: The Innate Generosity of Spirit, Heart, Mind and Body by Audrye S. Arbe feel, imagine, or create that expands “what is” to a higher vibration, makes us, the giver – as well as the receiver – feel wonderful, which most people

What is giving? Giving is the will, desire, ability and action of sharing, uplifting, enhancing, making better, people, place, planet, whatever is in front, back, within, and without oneself. Giving is actually innate within all of us, and, yes, for some of us (all of us at some point) giving is also a learned response to life. Giving is being present, open to possibility, sharing and emanating possibility, wellness, miracles, love, prosperity, kindness. Why do we give? Truly, we give because giving feels good. Giving opens our hearts, expands our energy bodies, and uplifts the very vibration with which we live our lives. As we are energy beings, anything we think, do,

adore. For me personally, giving can take many forms. Because I am blessed to be born a natural mystic intuitive, healer-clairvoyant with an expanded consciousness right from the get-go, giving of my wisdom, knowledge, love and humor is a “given.” I have always done this, starting when I was a little girl and gave to my mom some of my observations and ideas. I also learned the importance of discovering and discerning whether another person is ready to receive, in general and in specific, what another being has to give. So, for me, giving is opening my heart to feel, sense and see where I can be of service, contribution and

support, and then being and doing what I can. As a channel, I can and do send out vast amounts of love energy. I love this! Sometimes, my giving consists of praying and holding in vision a high outcome for someone, a situation, the planet, without my having to declare what a specific outcome may be, as we all have free will. It would be inappropriate for me to even attempt to subsume another being’s free will, though, truth to tell, yes, there are clearly times when I would totally like to do so. Then, I tweak my own energy and will, and ask for expanded consciousness, opportunities, possibilities for the other being as well as myself, turning the situation over to Source. MC, or Main

love, love yourself, both your human ego self and, definitely, your higherconscious Soul Self. Without that, you have less than nothing to give to anyone else.

Giving is communicating, sharing, uplifting. Giving will make you grow, evolve, learn, let go of internal “junk,” and blossom. Being with someone, just as a “sounding board,” is sometimes the best gift you can bestow upon another. A heartfelt hug can save a life. A professional healer, under certain circumstances, I will simply give the healing or reading. I have written beautiful enlightening books to both entertain, enlighten and shift people’s consciousness globally.

So, to me, giving is a way of life.

People poison themselves with what they eat and drink, their thought patterns, emotional matrix, questionable choices and shaky conscious connection to Source. Most dis-ease is preventable. Obesity is self-created. Knowing personally how insidious and tenacious food addictions can be, I am here to give knowledge, the possibility of ongoing wellness-vitality to the world, a remarkable and humbling path. Giving also encompasses receiving. After all, everyone flourishes when giving, so to keep the spiraling everexpanding eternal flow vibrant, we also benefit from receiving. So we give, share, receive, evolve, give, share, receive, and evolve.

Giving is realizing what’s needed and doing what I, you, we can to fulfill that need. We need to be aware of planetary resources, population, health, wellness, finances, love, relationships, air, water, earth, plants – all this. So, to give, do, be, become that which preserves, enhances, cares for what is also gives back to us. Be inventive. Create newly in a productive manner, and always include that this be for the highest good of yourself, others, and everyone involved (the world) with free will for all.

I am ecstatic to share how to create, maintain, renew vitality, brilliance, wellness, joy, and creativity for all, so dancing through the years is a delight. What about depression, despair, fear, overwhelm, rage, panic, any of the less-than-love-feeling emotions? When they show up – and they certainly may – acknowledge them, send love to them, discover what’s at the root of them, and take an action to disappear them. Above all, give to yourself!!!!!!!! Love,
