From the Editor A Message from Kandee G Life has a tendency to throw lots of obstacles in our path. Some are easier than others to overcome, and some are downright terrifying and life changing. How we handle life’s obstacles depends solely on our attitude. Embracing life with courage and determination to succeed provides far better results than living a life in fear. “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” ― Winston Churchill Over the years I have met some of the most courageous people I’ve ever known. Take Captain Joe Townsend for example. He lost his family in a horrific accident and had to rebuild himself and his life. He was dealt with a tragedy that most won’t face, nor have the ability to pick up the piece and thrive as Joe has done. Rebecca Zerbo, is a 14 year old victim of bullying. Not only did she overcome the effects of being bullied, but she rose far above it and now reaches out to inspire kids and adults alike. Becky Woodbridge has always wanted a baby. Life didn’t turn out as she had planned and she was left successful, but childless. She managed to find the courage to seek out every option possible, and now has a beautiful foster baby. These are just a few of the stories in this issue of Nothing But Good News Magazine. Stories of courage, of overcoming fear, failure and uncertainty. Life is an amazing adventure. You can build your life to be as big and incredible as you want. If you choose to live a life of courage. A huge thanks to all of our contributors, advertisers and especially YOU, the reader. Article Safety Net By Shannon Siegel

Screams and screeches would echo through the venue as I watched circus performers ride motorcycles around a small cage, throw flames into the air, and attempt dangerous acts. I had always thought to myself that these people must have been crazy to be taking such risky chances with so many people watching, there to witness any miscalculation. They were so brave, but it wasn’t until I took my own overwhelming chances for their performances to seem admirable to me.

My sweet 16 was just around the corner when drastic changes made their way into my life and being 16 did not feel so sweet. My parents announced their “trial” separation, and I knew that my mom was not moving back in. My sister made the difficult decision to avoid the SATs and college after her high school graduation, to follow her passion for horses. My friends and I were going through a rocky time trying to find our places in the world. I began to see my safety net begin to drop farther and farther away from my leap.

Fear seemed natural, simply because every person has fears. As a child I always heard my friends talk about what they were afraid of. My friend Katy was afraid of dogs after she had been viciously attacked by a husky, my sister was afraid of fish, for some reason she could not explain, I was afraid of bees because of a sting I had once gotten on my big toe. There were an endless amount of fears to hold, and at that point fear was something I wanted to run from.

When my sister turned 18 she decided to leave home and move to New York City with the money she had saved from working at various barns. When she left home I felt like I had lost my best friend, and the person that most understood my life. The way I saw the decision to leave made me feel like she was walking away from our family, and most of all walking away from me. I learned to see her move as an act of bravery, not fear. It was something that made my respect for her so much greater, and it also helped me accept Throughout my whole life my family has my fears as challenges. been there any moment I needed help. Taking the chance that I did when I left home was the best decision I ever made. Even beyond my realizations at the time that I ventured to college, I was taking on a task that would push me to my furthest limits and dig the highest potential out of me. Never giving up on the college applications, keeping my spirits lifted and having my family’s support got me into college. Dedication, bravery and a lot of late nights have kept me in college. My safety net is only a phone call away, but having that net dwindle taught me how to be an independent woman, and it showed me how much the world has to offer. Leaving home and taking on a new adventure, a new educational mountain to climb brought me to be the person that I am today. I am now ready for the next task to conquer, the next lesson to learn and most of all, the next frightening leap I may have to take.

Aeature rticle F Facing the Lion By Jacqueline JLove Jackson

you face a situation fearlessly, it most often turns out that there was nothing to fear. This goes with the Law of Nonresistance ...What we resist persists. Fear placed the ladder in the woman’s pathway and fearlessness, or facing the lion, removed it. This is the genius and magic contained in courage. Remember that “facing” means taking a stand, not fighting against the situation. Fighting is resisting. When you take your stand, in courage and faith, you receive all the good that is in store for you if you believe.

I have been studying a book by Florence Scovel Shinn called The Game of Life and How to Play It. In it, she states that “courage contains genius and magic.” This is illustrated in the experience of her friend who told the author that nothing could force her to walk under a ladder... Florence told her that if she was afraid that she was giving in to the belief in two powers, good and evil instead of one...God. Florence taught the woman that there can be no opposing power to God, unless invented in the mind. She continued to help the woman by suggesting that she show her belief in one power by walking under the next ladder she encounters. Soon, during one of the woman’s errands to her bank, there was a ladder blocking her path. She became fearful as she saw there was no way to get past the ladder except to walk under it. As far as she was concerned, this may as well have been a lion and she was too fearful to face it. She

12

turned her back to the ladder and began walking away when she remembered Florence’s words about only believing in one power. Gaining her courage, she decided to go back and walk under the ladder. The decision to turn back and walk under the ladder was a big deal for her, since her fear of ladders had held her in bondage for many years. When she returned to the spot, she found that the ladder was not there. The lesson in this, is that what happened in the case of the disappearing ladder, is also what happens in many cases when we allow ourselves to do something that we were afraid to do... you may find that the obstacle has been removed, or made easier. I’m sure we can all come up with stories where we faced something head-on and found that it wasn’t that bad after all, because the person you were afraid of turned out to be nice, or the situation was corrected, or the obstacle removed altogether. The author, Florence, asserted that when

learned we don’t have to be pushed around by our feelings. We can take action. We can feel depressed, and still vacuum the floor. We can feel sad and still do the grocery shopping. We can feel homesick and still choose to go out with friends and enjoy our new surroundings. There’s nothing we need to do to get courage. Actually, there’s nothing we can do. It’s not something we learn. It’s not a skill. There’s no place to go for lessons. We already have it. We just need to evaluate the fear, decide on the appropriate action, do it, and as we act, we discover the courage is there. The more we act, the more it shows up. Traditionally, people have used the word “courage” when referring to war heroes, police officers, fire fighters and others who put their lives on the line. It is true. They have tremendous courage. Do they feel fear? Yes, and they act anyway. Perhaps our daily activities aren’t life threatening, yet we must understand, that it takes courage to live. Ordinary people like you and me need courage to get through our daily lives. There are so many things that cause us to feel fear. If we think back on our lives, there were ordinary things, which some people took in stride, that just about caused us to hide in a closet somewhere and never come out, yet we took action anyway. That’s courage! When I was starting first grade, I would get sick every morning right about the time we were to leave for school. Fear! My mother would let me stay home because I was sick. Then, after several days, she took me to school at noon. Once there, I discovered school

wasn’t so bad. In fact, I liked it. That’s when I learned that courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is what we choose to do, even when we are afraid.

Think about your own life. I bet you can recall many times when you felt fear and still did what needed doing. See, you had the ability to make right choices and take right action no matter what you felt. That’s Courage!

Whenever I feel fear, which has been often throughout my life, I think about that first grade experience and remember that when I get to the other side of fear, I’m usually okay. My fears were just things I built up in my mind. I have had rapid heart palpitations as my plane landed in a foreign country to start a new life, watched my hands shake as I returned to school at 45 and had to find a classroom on a large campus, quaked in my shoes with stage fright when I’ve had to do speeches, and suffered from stomach aches when I left my secure job to start my own training company. Yet, each of these experiences became steppingstones on my path to success. My sister used to say, “Don’t let your feelings control you. Learn to control your feelings.” While I still haven’t learned to control my feelings, I have

How to Have a Sparkly Heart By Dee Wallace

When I was little, there was a section in downtown Kansas City that had sidewalks with these little silver specks in them. Whenever we had the good fortune to go to that area, my mother would always take me to see those sidewalks. I would stand there, taking in the beauty, and then gleefully exclaim, “Look mommy. There are diamonds in the sidewalk!” She would smile and hug me, and with so much love in her heart would answer, “Yes, DD. I had them put them there just for you.” I reflect often on how the simplicity of such a small experience gave me such joy, and how, sixty years later, it remains with me still.

gleefully exclaim upon sighting a white butterfly, “Look, mommy! Mary loves us so much she flew all the way over here.” And I would reply, “Yes, baby. When you love someone you want to be with them wherever they are.” I have shared my own, private moments with myself: a double rainbow in New Zealand, a whale breeching in my beloved Hawaii, a horseback ride on the beach in South Africa. And in each of those simple moments, I feel the excitement of those diamonds in the sidewalk. The joy of a sparkly heart; that the simple, full, quiet moments can bring to us all.

I commit to living with a sparkly heart. Thanks, mom, for ordering that sidewalk.....just for me.

“Kandee G’s favorite book of 2011”

I feel the same way when I see a white butterfly. When my own daughter was small, there were always white butterflies in the backyard. She was convinced it was always the same one, and she named it Mary. Mary began traveling with us wherever we went, and we went many places. Gabrielle accompanied me on many of my film locations, and she would

And I know the meaning of, “Be as a little child to enter the kingdom of heaven.” Have a sparkly heart. Be open to the magic of a butterfly, and the grandeur of a breeching whale. Come alive in the moments that life gives you to feel and be and touch heaven just from your imagination and a heart full of gratitude.

The Demons that Chased Me By Allan McDougall

Hollywood is very fond of holding up the virtue of courage. Hollywood lauds the physical bravery displayed by John Wayne charging the enemy in “The Sands of Iwo Jima.” It extols the moral courage of Jimmy Stewart in “Mister Smith Goes to Washington.” Nothing stirs an audience like a good person standing strong in the face of overwhelming opposition because it is the right thing to do. In my case, courage played out on a much smaller stage yet the stakes were just as high. “Facing it--always facing it--that’s the way to get through. Face it!” wrote the British novelist Joseph Conrad. Simple advice, but for more than half my life I did everything but. From my earliest years on a poor dairy farm near Auburn, Ontario in Canada I was pursued by demons. The demons chasing me were my internal reactions to outside events and situations. They came in the form of a mother with anger issues, physical ills such as asthma and developmental issues such as a terrible stutter. When I entered school I attracted other demons: playground bullies, a paralyzing fear of speaking in front of the class and struggles with reading, writing and arithmetic.

up to the task. It repeatedly rejected the booze. I was living in the world of addiction—the obession of the mind to continue using, while the body continues to reject. That day I faced a terrifying truth: the greatest love of my life--Dame Alcohol--had left me and was not coming back. At this point I had three options: A) keep drinking and wind up in an institution, B) commit suicide or C) deal with the tragedy my life had become. Courage, for me, meant choosing option C, finally turning to face the monsters that had pursued me forever. Courage comes from the Latin root that means heart. That is fitting because the journey of rebuilding my life after alcohol had burned it down consisted of traveling those eighteen inches from my head to my heart. I worked most of my adult life as a hard rock miner in Canada’s Sudbury Basin pulling nickel, gold and other valuables from the ground. Handling dynamite, wrestling 120 pound pneumatic drills and avoiding falling into mile deep mine shafts were child’s play compared to the weeks and months after I stopped drinking.

For many years it worked. Until it didn’t.

Yet, through my mental fog, I began to perceive gentle voices, helping hands and encouraging words. As my haze cleared I found people were only too willing to give a guy another chance. Slowly, the demons chasing me slowed down. When I turned to face them they no longer seemed so terrifying. In fact, when I began to understand them they started to disappear! All this time they had been feeding on my fears, which gave them the power to torment my every waking moment.

One day, alone in a bar, I prepared to pull the genie out of the bottle once again to vanquish my demons. This time, however, my body was no longer

By connecting with my heart, the whole world opened up to me. I have since made a good friend of Education (after vowing after high school never set foot in

By my teenage years, those demons had gnawed a hole in my soul that was wide and deep. Then I discovered something that could fill that hole: alcohol. Alcohol became the great “love affair” of my life. Alcohol blurred my demons and even made them disappear. Alcohol was never a problem for me but the solution to my problems.

a classroom again) and received college degrees including a Masters. Today I live a life of service and give talks around North America to chapters of Mothers Against Drunk Driving and many other organizations. I have told my story in a book, Breaking Through: Discovering the Riches Within, which, from the feedback I receive, gives readers a message of hope that something can be done about any condition in life no matter how rough. My days of drinking seem like another lifetime and, in a sense, they were. I had to find myself at the edge of a dark chasm before my courage manifested itself. Courage gave me the strength to back away from the cliff and face the fears that nearly pushed me over the edge. Those eighteen inches from my head to my heart was the hardest distance I ever travelled, but when I broke through, I found, and continue to find, greater riches than I pulled out of the ground during all my years as a miner. I firmly believe that the courage to guide our individual destiny exists in each of us and that the riches I have found lie within us all.

Feature rticle A rticle My Father’s Courage and His Gift to Me By Cynthia Makris said, “Stick around.” He looked at me with his big brown eyes and said, “Donʼt worry. Iʼll be here.” Now you can think whatever you want, but he stayed for me. I know he stayed for other people too, but he stayed for me. For years he had been giving me that deep look from his lovely eyes and telling me he loved me. We needed to mend some things from the past, which now seem so trivial and unimportant. I would almost die every time I left my parentsʼ house to go back to Europe. What if I never saw them again? The love from his eyes was something I never wanted to be without, and I wanted him to know how much I loved him.

24

My dad gave me the greatest gift a father could give his daughter. He gave me time to bask in his love before he went on. It was not easy for him. He had been a big strong man capable of doing anything and everything. Then one day he was given a choice, to live on and never be that man again or to go.

He almost decided not to have the operation. There was no time to consider his options. The operation was to be in one hour. My dadʼs first answer was no. Then he said he knew that our mother needed him, and he signed the papers.

The call came from Colorado on a sunny Sunday in Helsinki. I took the phone into our bathroom to hear better. My brother George said, “Cindy, itʼs really bad. Dadʼs going to lose his leg.” I slid down the tile wall sobbing uncontrollably. I knew that my dad would not want to keep living without

When I got to him two days later, he was still there, thank God. He had no time to think then either. The physical therapists were working with him for several hours a day. I had to leave after a week for a singing engagement. I still see him in his wheelchair in the hospital hallway as I hugged him and

his leg. I knew I wouldnʼt.

I remember how after a few years of singing opera, the role of Salome became almost my signature role. Every time I danced the Dance of the Seven Veils (which ends with no veils), I thought at some point, “Iʼm so glad my parents arenʼt here.” Then I got an engagement to perform, what else, Salome, in Philadelphia. Since I

of earrings which he had made into my hand. It was such a simple gesture and without a word, but it said so clearly, “I love you. I did this for you.” He was a master of getting right to the essence of what was important. I give thanks to God for giving me this wonderful person as my father. And I thank my wonderful Dad for having the courage to stick around.

hadnʼt sung in the States for years, my mother arranged for the entire family to fly to Philadelphia to see me perform. Great! Couldnʼt it have been another opera? After the performance, my dad looked into my eyes and said, “Honey, Iʼm proud of you.” Nothing could have meant more. Thatʼs how he was. He didnʼt say much, but he said all that counted. I adored my father. He was smart. He was strong. He understood how things worked. He could dream. He was everything a man should be. For my entire life, I would have the same nightmare that he suddenly died, and I couldnʼt bring him back. So, he didnʼt do that to me. He stuck around. His last year and a half of life was not fun for him in any way. An 86 year old man

with arthritis and one leg, which had an old knee replacement, started learning to walk again, to go to the bathroom by himself, to be isolated to his bedroom and his bathroom. He worked so hard learning to walk on a prosthesis, something a young man would surely feel more motivated to do. He walked proudly down the aisle in the little church he helped build, always to the very front row, on his prosthesis. Then he would stand at the pew and let my mother and me sit down first. This man had the courage to take the much tougher road and live so that we who needed him could have that much more of him. He never missed an opportunity in those last months to build me up and to tell me he was proud of me. I remember his dropping a pair

Cynthia Makris is at home on the opera stages of the world, a long journey for a girl from a small town in Colorado. In a career spanning thirty years, she has sung almost every leading soprano role and has sung on almost every continent. Still, the opinion which mattered the most to her was that of her dad, a self-made man with high standards and a very big and generous heart.

Dream Big Showcase Article Becky Woodbridge: Double Dreaming Interviewed by Hank Eder, Staff Writer

What Exactly is the Dream Big Showcase? Do you know someone who had a dream and went for it? Are they living their dream despite the odds? Each issue of Nothing But Good News Magazine will feature a unique individual that threw caution to the wind and went after their dream. Submit your ideas to Arlie@KandeeG.com Many people dream of things they want to accomplish, but a courageous few throw caution to the wind and set out boldly with sails unfurled. These visionaries and doers are the heart of the Dream Big Showcase. Joining their ranks this issue is Becky Woodbridge, speaker, author, TEDx organizer and proud new foster mother. Becky was the driving force behind the recent TEDx Delray event. More than 300 people attended this event, which featured 22 world-class speakers handpicked by Becky, including our own Kandee G. Becky says her main motivation for organizing the event was to be “a part of something bigger.” “It was really hard,” Becky says, “but it’s also the most fun I’ve ever had.” She also found the event highly rewarding. “It’s such a beautiful event that we did that we get constant people saying thank you so much for bringing this event to this area, thank you for opening my eyes, thank you for inspiring me to be bigger and better.” The TEDx event began with a fiveperson team and ended up with a

28

www.kandeeg.com

23-person team of volunteers. “That alone makes me so happy that I inspired these people to want to do this,” Becky says. “What really strikes me is that we all have, as human beings, no matter what country you come from, with different backgrounds, we all have the same desires to be validated, to be good, and to be happy. We all have the same concerns as humans.” Becky says her attendance at last year’s TED event really drove this point home. “There were 177 different countries there. There are more than 400 organizers worldwide. So here we all are, doing the same thing in our own respective countries, about wanting make a difference in someone’s life and wanting someone to see these amazing speakers that have ideas worth sharing all around the world that change the way we view the world. To become part of the emerging new world, Becky shares some advice. “Don’t focus on the bad things,” she says. “Don’t act as if you don’t hear it, but don’t focus on it, don’t dwell on

it. Look for the good out of the bad. In coaching, why I live with a glass half full and someone else lives with a glass half empty – it’s in their belief system and the mood they are living in. I live in a mood of ambition and peace, and because I’m in that mood, it shows through the glass. It’s the mood that you’re in. If you’re seeing something negative or limiting, change your mood, and change what you see on the other side of the glass.”

Dream Big Showcase Article right from the hospital. So now I’m 48, and I went from single the last 12 years and never having a family or kids; all of a sudden I have a five-day-old baby. Oh, my God, it was so difficult at first, but now it’s amazing. I’m in heaven.”

Just following the TEDx event, Becky received a call about becoming the foster mother of a five-day old girl. She had always wanted a baby, but couldn’t have them when she was married. “I could get pregnant, but I would miscarry,” she says. “When I got divorced, I was 34, childless, and devastated. It had always been my dream to be a Mommy, and I’ve always wanted to be a foster Mommy. After the divorce I thought I’d meet someone, get married, and have a baby. Well, I never met anybody.” Time was ticking along, and Becky decided she would try adopting a child on her own. “I got on the wait list for China, and it was a two and a half year wait. Then they called me and said it was delayed, and next thing you know, it went from two and a half years to nine years. So I waited about four and a half and then realized this is crazy. I’m sitting here waiting for a child, I want to have a family, and there are kids waiting all day long in the foster system. And so, I just decided to do it on my own through the foster system.” It took about a year to get licensed and go through all the classes, and I became a licensed foster home about a month ago. Then I got caught up in the TEDx event I was doing, so at the time they called me for a baby, and I had just finished the event and I couldn’t do it. It would be too much. The second phone call I got was a few weeks later. I had told them I wanted a baby up to two years old, and they said they had a baby who was five days old,

Becky says getting her baby was like a whirlwind. “I didn’t have nine months to prepare. They called me about an hour before she could be picked up at the hospital. Even though I knew I wanted to foster a baby, you don’t know when it’s coming, so the preparation was you get a crib.

personally and professionally. As the owner of a real estate company and a flight attendant for a major airline, Becky had firsthand knowledge of the mood shifts between employees and customers. Her very own mood created a company identity and is acutely aware of the shift in business. “Plane Speaking” Mood Matters is an interactive workshop that entertains, educates and empowers participants to unleash their extraordinary way of being to reach their fullest potential. Becky was recently the organizer for TEDx Delray Beach 2013

An old teacher used to say, “You don’t know what you don’t know. That’s exactly how it is when you’re taking on a newborn, and it was the same thing with the TEDx event. I basically gave birth to the TEDx event, and I didn’t know what to do. I just did it, and of course, learned along the way. It’s blindly going into something that you don’t know anything about.” Becky said she’s always just lived life. “I’ve never been fearful about doing anything. I was a skydiver; check that off my list. I’ve bungee jumped, I’ve climbed to a base camp on Mount Everest. I’m not afraid to do anything adventurous, and to me this is part of life and part of the adventure. So for Becky Woodbridge the adventure continues with her new foster daughter Victoria and her dog Benny. In her continuing mood of ambition and peace, the adventure is bound to be extraordinary. BIO: Prior to becoming a speaker and professional coach, Becky Woodbridge was the former president and founder of a highly rated South Florida real estate company, and was a 25year major airline Zillion Miler in the aisles. In two distinctly different work environments, Becky saw commonality in the way customer service is highly affected by poor communication and can limit successful results both

Originally from Bangor, Maine, Becky migrated down the coast and has become an active participant in the South Florida business community. In 2007, she participated in Leadership Boca Raton and Leadership Delray Beach as a member of each respective Chamber of Commerce. She served on the Board of Aid To Victims of Domestic Abuse, Delray Beach Film Festival and is the Founder of Holiday Angels Foundation. Becky is a member of the National Speakers Association, Florida Speakers Association, American Society of Training and Development, and the International Coach Federation. Becky currently resides in Delray Beach Florida, where she and her new foster daughter, Victoria, are often taken on long walks by her friend Benney, a Brittney and Golden Retriever mix. Article Finding and Being Yourself Takes Courage By: Hank Eder

Courage is a very personal quality. Its many shades of meaning are different for everyone. It takes courage for a child to get on a bicycle without training wheels. It takes courage for a teenaged boy to ask a girl out for the first time. It takes courage to go deep within yourself and know yourself for who you really are, and then to act on what you find, even if people close to you don’t approve.

Whenever I read interviews with folks who performed heroic deeds, like rescuing survivors from a burning plane, I find a common thread in their accounts. Most did not wake up that morning feeling particularly heroic. When they found themselves suddenly faced with a life-or-death situation, they didn’t stop and reflect on the nature of heroism or courage. They acted; doing what they thought was the right thing to do. An instant of clarity drove them into action. Only later, when they had time to reflect upon what they had done, some of them said they would have been afraid if they had thought it through. So is that the meaning of courage? Acting without thinking things through? It might be for some we consider to be heroes, even though they are reluctant

to identify themselves with the “H” word. However, it’s not that simple. Otherwise, everyone who ever acted without thinking would be a hero, and, frankly, most are not.

I met a 16-year-old girl who wrote her first novel. Her father stands behind her every step of the way and helps open doors for her. Her novel is getting good coverage, and a book company that brings literature into schools is negotiating a possible deal for her work to be a series. She is fortunate to have a father who approves of who she really is, but this young woman is gritty and independent enough that she would still be pursuing her dream, no matter who approved or disapproved. Is she courageous? I would say she is, even though at her first public book signing she got a case of the jitters and had to try about five times before she got up the nerve to read for the crowd. I would say she’s special, too. She’s already found herself, and found her voice, at such a tender age. A long-time friend of mine is an Emmywinning musician. In the early days she was part of a band that played early “New Age” music. She and her partner of many years were in an electronic music class. Their teacher didn’t like what they played, and he gave them a poor grade. They stuck to their guns and went on to put out more than a dozen albums. Their teacher remained in obscurity. They showed courage, knowing themselves and their dreams, and being unwilling to deviate from their own path to fit someone else’s mold.

Finding and Being Yourself Takes Courage Continued...

The hardest molds to break are those imposed by family and friends. A young man wants to be a writer, but his father will only pay for a scientific or technical education. A young girl wants to be an actress, but her mother always wanted to see her become a nurse or a doctor. Mom keeps hammering in how impractical the girl is being. Look at all the starving actors or the ones who are working as waiters just to keep food on the table. Don’t you want to be somebody? Of course she wants to be somebody. She wants to be an actress. Without the support of her mother it will be a much harder road, but still a road worth taking, if that’s what she chooses to do. She needs to find the courage to BE who she is striving to be. By making that part of her life every day, she will feed the magical process of drawing it to herself. That’s the way to achieve

34

your dream – by BEING it. Many years ago I met a couple named Leo and Pearl. They were in their late 80s, but still vibrant enough to have an illustrated Kama Sutra on a table in their home’s spa (complete with a steam room). Leo and Pearl were quite wealthy. They owned a factory, a veterinary office, and a kennel of racing dogs. Leo told me there were times in their lives that they were multi-millionaires and times when it all fell to pieces, but they never worried, because knowing they had done it once told them in no uncertain terms they could do it again and again. They faced the world together, with courage, knowing who they were without doubts. We could all learn a lot from Leo and Pearl. So for me, courage is keeping true to my vision and keeping my vision true to myself. It may not always

be the easy road, but it shall remain my “path of heart.”

Courage From Optimism By David Mezzapelle

of working and communicating with people all over the globe that have surmounted their fears in the face of adversity. We have seen people amass courage after a devastating break-up or divorce, after a financial setback, after a serious accident, after the loss of a loved one, and much more. We have seen courage amassed from people tired of hiding, tired of fearing the unknown, tired of being in 2nd, 3rd, or even last place. These are ordinary people, not gladiators, athletes, or industry titans.

We have all heard the expression, “Get up, dust yourself off, and move on.” How easy is that expression to say when fear isn’t staring you in the face? For someone that has been through a traumatic experience, or life-changing adversity, this expression may be the opposite of what they are willing to do. Our fears seem to be formed in two ways. The first is from a natural, innate fear of something unknown. A resistance was formed and we can’t seem to penetrate it. The second is from our own past experiences or exposure to someone else’s past experiences. Whatever it was, it scared the s--- out of us! Well, I am happy to report that others have been in the same boat as you; you are not alone. And, for many, their perseverance ultimately led to surmounting those fears and establishing strong foundations of courage. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “courage” is defined as, “the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear.” (A synonym is “bravery”). How terrific is that? It is terrific because we each have the ability to amass courage and bravery; none of

us are exempt from that ability. Many people will tell you that courage is obtained by facing your fears. This is absolutely true, but not enough in my opinion. Courage is obtained just like success - through effort, hard work and optimism. The effort and hard work are self-explanatory; work at facing your fears (as mentioned above) and take baby steps when doing so. Every success in life comes with some sort of effort and hard work, there is no avoiding that. However, as the definition states, there is “mind or spirit” in the mix as well. That is where I believe optimism comes into play. So how do we apply it? Optimism is obtained when we learn how others have overcome similar fears and then we think positive that we too can emulate their successful outcomes. Reading their stories of perseverance is comforting, it gives us hope. It makes the “fear monsters” shrink to such a small size, that WE become the monsters with the ability to squash them. Over the years I have had the privilege

All these examples, and all these milestones, strengthen our resilience and form a mountain of courage that lead us down paths that we never think we can traverse. Don’t hide behind your fears; study how others have surmounted theirs, think positive, and move forward as the brave, courageous soul I guarantee you already are.

David Mezzapelle believes that we can all make optimism contagious just by sharing our life’s adventures, our successes, and even our failures. Mezzapelle is the author of Contagious Optimism, an uplifting book series that includes real stories from real people around the globe which demonstrates that every cloud has a silver lining. AFrticle eature A True Story...

From the Files of Second Chance Society

Henry was born and raised in Dade County, but has worked in various areas of the country, including Massachusetts, Illinois, North Carolina and South Carolina. He was living in Boston, had a good job and doing well at the time this story begins. His only brother lived with his family in Florida City, a suburb of Homestead, Florida. When Henry heard that his brother had been sent to prison, he felt it was his duty to pull up stakes in Boston and move to South Florida to help his brother’s wife and four children, all under the age of twelve. Henry had been an iron worker all his life but in South Florida could find only day labor jobs. Between what he made and what his sister-in-law made at her job, they managed to support the family. However the day came when the sister-in-law lost her job because of the economy. They could no longer pay the rent and were evicted. She and her children went to live with her parents in northern Florida and Henry became homeless. He moved to Ft. Lauderdale and lived under a bridge for a while.

When Henry finally decided he had to get back to doing his trade of iron work, he tried and succeeded in getting into the homeless shelter nearest the Iron Workers Union which is located on NE 7th Avenue in Ft. Lauderdale. He worked at day labor jobs long enough to catch up on his dues to the Iron Workers Union and now had his union card which almost guaranteed him a job if he had tools. There are several different classifications for iron worker jobs and each classification requires different tools. He was offered a job in constructing a 13-story parking garage if he had the required tools for the Structural Steel and Iron Work classifications. The basic tools for these classifications would cost between $300 and $400. The shelter where he was staying had the budget for housing the clients, feeding the clients and rehabilitating when necessary, but no budget to buy tools for the client when he or she finally found a job. Second Chance Society received an application from Henry’s Case Manager in which Henry asked for help

in acquiring the tools necessary for the offered job. Second Chance first verified the job, and then interviewed Henry. The purpose of the interview was to ascertain that Henry was really trying. Second Chance believes very strongly that their funds should be spent only on those who are making every effort to help themselves. The Program Coordinator who interviewed Henry felt that Henry was very much trying to re-establish his life and recommended that he be helped by buying the necessary tools. This request was then approved by a member of the Board of Directors. A Volunteer Shopper went with Henry to purchase the necessary tools. You should have seen the smile on Henry’s face when he was handed the tools. You could see HOPE in his eyes, something he had been living without. Henry started his new job the following Monday. Today Henry is self-sufficient and is once again helping his brother’s wife and family by sending them a check every payday. Miracles like “Henry” happen every day at Second Chance!

Second Chance Society is a 501c3 charity which believes in giving a HAND-UP, not a

HAND-OUT. Its mission statement says its purpose is to help homeless and struggling men and women by providing moral encouragement and removing material barriers to selfsufficiency. From its inception in 2001, SCS has helped over 4500 men and/or women in their quest to get back to self-sufficiency. A rticle Feature DBS Saved My Life By Doug Rickel

almost nothing, fast. I committed myself into CAMH (Center for Addiction and Mental Health). I just knew that I had gotten to a point where I just wanted the pain to end. My suicidal ideation had now grown into a plan. I stayed a patient there for a total of 6 months. Their efforts unfortunately did not produce any results, and I ended up returning home worse than ever and rendered hopeless. At that point I just wept hysterically, sheltered in my small apartments, self-medicating and hating “everything about everything. Only a few months later I attempted suicide three times and became a CAMH resident for another 3 months.

May 10, 2013 Hello, My name is Doug Rickel... I suffered from TRSD, Treatment-Resistant Severe Depression (and the co-morbid conditions, anxiety & in my case ADHD) for the last 44-years, and I’ve been battling this horribly painful disease. I’ve gone through over 30 years of

38

talk therapy, psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral theory, and all the rest since Freud. I have been prescribed every antidepressant that’s ever been manufactured, all classes, including SSRI’s, Tricyclics, anti-psychotics, MAO Inhibitors and the rest. To no avail, this was one battle that seemed destined to end in disaster. It was last summer, and any sense of hope I could have possibly had left was dwindling to

Summer 2013 - Kandee G Enterprises

In that time the doctors decided to try Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), which is generally a last resort for people who are this horribly exclusive group of sufferers who can’t get relief from anything…nothing works and nothing’s gonna work. TRSD, TreatmentResistant Severe Depression. ECT was said to offer a 65-75% chance of actually getting better and possibly making a dramatic improvement. At the very least, should take one out of the severe category of the disease, to often the moderate-severe, some miraculously. It actually has changed the lives of fighters like Kitty Dukakis (who’s book I read while I was in the hospital). Those who benefit by ECT generally have an average of 3-6 sessions. I ended up going through over 25 sessions! That over 25 direct shockings to a fragile brain on both sides (bilateral)… and yet still nothing. Hope obviously was now officially gone. As luck would have it, my psychiatrist told me about a clinical study trial being done here in Toronto called DBS - Deep Brain Stimulation; was refer to it as the “pacemaker for the brain”. The two

AFrticle eature

electrodes that are implanted into both sides of the Cingulate gyrus are controlled by neurotransmitter which is implanted, like a pacemaker, just below the collarbone, above the breast. It’s like it never happened since I was so numb by that point. Yet I went through an 11 1/2 hour brain surgery and implantation of the transmitter, a separate procedure. The grinding of drills into my skull! The worst thing that I can recall of the procedure was when the electrodes were going into my brain. A feeling that I hope others don’t have to feel…scary stuff, yet numb. Of course, I knew that if this was to be just another failure, disappointment is a, then I would be left with only one option and there was no one who would try to convince me otherwise; at that point they knew what the consequences were. Thankfully, my Neurosurgeon Dr. Andres Lozano is a genuine guy, with a calming bedside manner. So far he said that he’s performed about 60 different surgeries on cases like mine with a 2/3rds success rate. That should be very inspiring and I hope that it works. But at this point, with all I’ve suffered and gone through, it was hard to dig up a drop of hope for this. I’ve had just so much sadness, anger, regret, and rage about my life that to this point. Totally numb. No drive to do anything, no matter how much I may have once, at some brief moment “enjoyed” doing it. I suppose what must have kept me going up to that point, was knowing that the procedure had proven successful in 2/3rds of the study patients. And, of course, I was and am very fortunate to have such a team of dedicated doctors, dealing with this caliber procedure, fighting for a cure right here in Toronto. Dr. Lozano,

incidentally, also holds the patent to the technology. I had the surgery on February 6th 2012. I was then faced with having to keep hope alive and be patient for the following 6 months of the double blind study. (DBS is already approved and helping sufferers of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease as well as other ailments.) The data suggested only a good progression and was promising, and at that point, I was hoping for any kind of accidental miracle.

have absorbed all of this information while living in hell, is astounding, I would cry tears of utter pain and hopelessness every single day of my life, where now I’m crying tears of joy when I hear my favorite Chicago song, or see a pretty bird, or see children playing in the park. Yes, it me saying these things. I am now not operating with ½ a brain. I’ve introduced both sides and they are now best of friends, after never even being introduced before. I can go on for hours, this is a story with a lot of twist, turns, cancer, death, heartache, hope, resilience..etc..etc…..and frankly cannot be topped. I think that any and every one, not just those who suffer from mental illness, will be captivated and blown away by the end result. A whole new life…food tastes great, I have lots of love from my family, and I the old Doug W. Rickel is dead and buried, RIP…now Dougie’s here to the rescue, by the grace of something, and that in itself will offer a S**tload of perspective, faith and quite often goose bumps to everyone that I can share this story full of hope with. DBS is truly a miracle mental health breakthrough in the fight against this often deadly, utterly overwhelming disorder.

Well, now I’ve got that and more… yeah me, who I’ve always called “Mr. Lucky” which I’m sure you can tell reeks of anger and sarcasm. No, this is in fact the real deal. I have not felt sad for 2 months now. The evil tapes that always played over and over 24/7 in my brain…are actually autocorrecting themselves. I knew I had certain talents…but to really

Thanks for your time & attention…I look forward to talking with you more and getting the chance to share some amazing experiences that I’ve been experiencing every day for the last 2 months. There really, no really, there is hope if you can see/picture it ahead. It’s taken a lot, but now it’s my turn! Cheers, Douglas Warren Rickel Survivor (647) 855-3900 dougwrickel@gmail.com

Article Solomon Speaks of Reconnecting Your Life By Dr. Eric Pearl

Dr. Eric Pearl – the founder of Reconnective Healing – was running a successful chiropractic practice in Los Angeles when a series of bizarre occurrences led him to realize that his gift lay far beyond the realm of spinal adjustment. One patient after another reported healings from cancers, epilepsy, cerebral palsy and other severe health conditions, simply when Dr. Pearl held his hands near them. This coincided with an astonishing series of occurrences when patient Frederick Ponzlov – and others – began delivering coherent messages about the healings that were occurring, seemingly coming from a source beyond our four-dimensional existence here on Earth. But there was much more… profound and lifealtering information, illumination and wisdom on how we can improve our lives. Those insights came courtesy of Solomon, an extra-dimensional intelligence that speaks through Frederick. Later, under specific questioning from Dr. Pearl, the vital content in the new book, Solomon

42

Speaks on Reconnecting Your Life (Hay House), came to light. What this book offers is an entirely new perspective on how to reconnect with, tap into, create, utilize, monitor, manage, and flow forward with the unlimited, expansive power of the Universal energy that enables us to heal, thrive and live our most vital, purposeful, productive, balanced and exuberantly happy life. It provides new insights into the intelligent energy that is the extraordinary force of creation, the source of healing and the connection we have to our higher states of being.

distinct they are—it all has to do with ego. We have now managed to “create” how different we all are. And in that difference comes disharmony.

The following excerpt from Solomon Speaks is a glimpse into the storehouse of knowledge that Solomon offers, now chronicled in the book, Solomon Speaks on Reconnecting Your Life (Hay House), by Dr. Eric Pearl and Frederick Ponzlov.

We are now in a state of critical mass. We are so isolated, with our various distinct individualities, that we can wreak havoc on someone else and hope or think that we gain from it. I’m talking about terrorism; I’m talking about hate crimes . . . anything of that ilk. That somehow if we are able to eliminate a reflection of ourselves, we are going to become more whole. It’s a very twisted viewpoint.

There is No Progress to be Made by Celebrating Our Differences. This penchant for human beings to discover how unalike they are, how

Summer 2013 - Kandee G Enterprises

Where we need to put the energy now is in how similar we are, how much we all have that is similar that can be shared. How alike we all are, in terms of joy and pain and suffering and elation. And we need to share that information now. There is no progress to be made by celebrating our differences. We’ve done that.

So that’s what we need to recognize,

Article that we are all, in an umbilical sense, connected to the same force. Like reconnecting strings. Because we’ve lost that connection, that understanding that each individual’s greatness is relied upon by the other person’s greatness, by recognizing their greatness, not their inability. What this simply comes down to is to recognize that every creature has greatness inherent in them. And the suffering of one is the suffering of all mankind. There is a way for everyone to be joyful and not to be dependent upon what I refer to as relative happiness. That happiness has to do with whether or not you have more or less than another individual in terms of material goods, attractiveness, or all those strata that have been created. It’s a very destructive energy, relative happiness. The absolute happiness that comes from within, that’s eternal. It isn’t at the expense of everyone else. When people allow themselves to reexperience that, they recognize the joy that’s in all.

In many people’s illusion, prosperity is what’s going to allow them to finance happiness somewhere. That’s what prosperity means to them. “Now I can be happy, because now I can buy the house that’s going to bring me happiness.” I know many lonely people with very big houses.

and will be available at bookstores or online at hayhouse.com

Let’s instead talk about experiencing joy. We were put on this planet to experience joy. To understand the beauty, the depth, the excitement of the life experience. To thoroughly embody it, to become joyful in it, and by doing so, become compassionate with other people. Bottom line. The trouble is that we’re looking in the wrong places for what we think is joy, and we’ve bought into other concepts in which we think joy is experienced. Or we distrust the joy we’re experiencing as not being valid and not being of social worth. So the bottom line here is: joy is something that exists, can happen within you, and can be a part of the light in every second of your being if you choose to live that way. And when you experience it, everything else will be taken care of. You do not have to worry. You must allow yourself to trust your life force and not second-guess it. Trust your instinct. It is a sum total of your entire existence. It is a vast library of information. We blind ourselves to it when we shut down our access to our library. It’s incorporating all of that existence, all that work, into this single moment in time. And breathing through it and allowing that funnel through to create the kind of force that will alter existence... that will change lives. *** *** This is an excerpt from Solomon Speaks on Reconnecting Your Life by Dr. Eric Pearl and Frederick Ponzlov. Article Living in the Supermind

Excerpted from the book Living In the Supermind- From Personal Mind to Spiritual Mind

By Dr. Maurie Pressman

OPENING TO THE SUPERMIND THROUGH LUCID DREAMING AND LUCID MEDITATION

mind and sleeping mind join, we have special access to high expanses of the mind.

If we enter the quiet mind, we enter a borderland between waking consciousness and dream consciousness. It is the zone of Lucid Meditation. In this margin we have right of entry to many things: worries and fears, suppressed emotions, all of which can now rise to the surface to be relieved or made productive. Our dearest aspirations and longings may come up.

In the lucid dream, we bring waking consciousness into the dream world; in lucid meditation we bring the dream consciousness into the waking world. In both cases, there is a joining. It is this joined consciousness that we cultivate in lucid dreaming and lucid meditation. But all this is of little benefit, if we do not bring the lessons learned from such dreams and meditation into waking life.

Our minds carry a magical power that we can mobilize when we become lucid. It is rewarding to develop this capacity, and to visualize what we dearly want to achieve. Though it may sound mysterious, it is not. Achieving what we visualize is fully possible if we make this way-- the way of lucid meditation-- a way of life and practice.

Lucid meditation helps us to achieve a cool and detached mind with which we can survey our emotions, make important observations about ourselves and others, and better decisions, therefore. We become more able to control passion and operate with wisdom. Practicing introspection, and keeping open to inner subtle cues, we contact the higher subtle realms. We broaden inner vision; we surrender, all the while looking inside with a surrendered expectation. We become progressively open to the higher realms and to messages that come from a higher place.

Lucid dreaming is a special kind of dreaming; the dreamer is awake and yet dreaming. He/she can direct the dream. At such a time, waking consciousness meets dream consciousness. When the waking

For instance, while watching a wildlife program, I was drawn in to the inner state of a puma hunting its prey. I felt the puma’s hunger, its graceful and powerful burst of speed, its satisfaction as it filled an empty stomach. This experience let me know that when we identify with either person or animal, we do so by entering the other on the subtle plane. “Avesa,” is the Sanskit term for moving into the subtle body of another entity. Our ability to experience avesa is the basis of sympathy, empathy, and identification with another. When we are disturbed by another person’s problems, feeling their pain or their fear, they are uniting astral bodies on the subtle plane, creating avesa and identification. Lucid meditation is the mirror of lucid dreaming. In lucid dreaming, our goal is to be awake in the dream. In lucid meditation, we are already awake, yet we try to connect with the power of the dream realm. Translated into waking life, this ability, cultivated during meditation, develops the power of our subtle senses. This capacity affirms our essential unity with all of life. It cultivates compassion,

awareness, and a sense of our being in the flow of things. Using examples from meditations, I will share my experiences with lucid meditation, to show how it has helped me to be a better teacher, therapist, father, husband, and friend, and improved my sensitivity and compassion. The Superworld and the Dream The Supermind dwells in the Superworld. The Superworld extends across the universes; in it we are everywhere in a moment. It is the world of thought and at the same time a world beyond thought, reaching ever higher into a sphere of undiscovered power. A world of consciousness, it embraces all things, for all things have consciousness. It is ever present, yet hidden by the veil of cynicism and doubt. The Superworld can be reached through the silent mind, but at the same time, by elevation of the self, the personality, into that spiritual High Essence called Self. This is achieved by raising our thoughts and aspiration to high realms of beauty, love and service. We experience the Superworld in our dreams, in which movement is easy, where all things are possible and reality is ever created anew. In our astral bodies, we visit the infinite realms of the dream. Finally, we visit the domain of All Love. Dreams have an important relationship to the Superworld. The Supermind can be entered in a dream. There, we can understand more deeply. Our dreams help us to evaluate progress or lack of progress in our evolution, and through them, we can prognosticate and help to find our future path. But in order to

see into the future and into the way things are in the higher realm, we must drop the shackles of doubt and the inhibition we have been taught. It is absolutely necessary to take the visions we see literally. In this way, we get a feel of the power that resides within, as we inhabit the Superworld: the facility to move, create, understand and change. I have always relied on dreams to understand my patients more deeply. Now I can use them to see into the higher world, which they and we can, and do, inhabit.

assumptions. Once we have done this we have opened the gate called intuition and are ready to receive downloads from the Cosmic Mind, the Supermind that both surrounds us and is within us.

Dreams are thought journeys into the future. When we take our dreams seriously, even literally, we can use them to move upward, and create. How Do We Move Through The Mirror To The Dream World? How do we move through the mirror to the dream world-and access the Supermind? To enter this world that can bring us greater love, unity, knowledge, power, confidence and beneficence, and integrate it into the plane of existence with which we are so commonly familiar? Settle into a half-dream place, a state of lucid meditation - remaining awake, and yet settling into the dream world. (A caution - remove doubt about what is seen until it can become understood and integrated with this world. Doubt is a barrier which can inhibit your movement between states.) Begin your lucid meditation in this half-asleep state. Travel into a quiet receptive mood, ready for the unexpected. Set the ego aside, no longer clinging to our sometimes selfcentered and already established

Article Gathering the Seeds: The Evolution Consciousness By Peter Canova

As I sat down to write this article on April 15th, 2013, news came that my hometown of Boston suffered a lethal terrorist attack. We could say that this runs counter to the theme of this article; that is, that consciousness is evolving. The Boston attack was clearly not an evolved act. If anything, this demonstrates the complexity of the subject, because evolving consciousness is a process and is not uniform. Consciousness at a basic level involves two things: awareness and the ability to process and use information. Awareness has several levels. Animals are aware of their environment, but they lack selfawareness in the sense of being able to think about themselves in relation to their place in the larger universe. They act rather than reflect. But even the reflective human mind is fragmented. We have subconscious and unconscious levels of the mind as well as a polarized perceptual mechanism called the left and right brain. Why all the compartmentalization? Very simple. If our consciousness was a single unity, we would be God, or at least we would perceive at a godlike level, and we would not at all perceive ourselves to be the individuals we

48

www.kandeeg.com

think we are. God, or Consciousness with a capital C, broke Itself up so It could become us. Creation was not a singular act by the wave of God’s hand. It was a flinging of God’s arm spreading seeds of the One Consciousness throughout creation. These seeds would grow in different levels of awareness depending upon how far they landed from the source of the nourishing light that had born them, and this physical dimension is said to be the farthest of all. But like every seed sown, a time comes to gather and to reap the harvest. This ingathering of the conscious seeds back to the source is what we call spiritual evolution. A polarity runs throughout the universe. It is a form of energy you might be familiar with as yin and yang, or female and male. This polarity is reflected in humans as the left and right brain hemispheres. The left brain is the domain of the male force- logic, intellect, analytic thought, science, and math. As the source of intuition, feeling, holistic thought, art, and abstract creativity, the right brain is more femininely oriented.

Summer 2013 - Kandee G Enterprises

Ancient spiritual texts identify the yin, or female force, the feminine face of God, if you will, as that which led the fall or dispersal of consciousness into creation. When consciousness first fell into material form, this feminine force would have dominated the minds of our early ancestors. History does tell us that most societies prior to 3,000 BC were feminine oriented and worshiped some form of the goddess in their mysteries. The world would have seemed magical to the early humans as they intuited their way through life in pulsations with the rhythms of nature. But now consciousness found itself embodied in physical form subject to all the laws and perils of physical existence. Wild beasts preyed on our ancestors. They needed to gather food and seek shelter. They had to organize and analyze in an effort to understand and control their environment. The left brain, or male way of thinking, eventually came to dominate the human thought process so successfully that today we are practically destroying ourselves for the sake of dominance and power as we find ourselves living in the vestiges of modern patriarchal societies today.

Article

But I believe we are on the verge of a shift, because I believe consciousness is an evolutionary spiral. I believe the feminine, intuitive energy is recycling into our lives to balance the dominant male oriented thought forms that have set the tenor for modern societies. The attack in Boston exemplifies exactly what we must evolve away from. Such aggression is the age old impulse to dominate and control through fear. If the original information of creation is a unity, then evolution in consciousness means personally intuiting that unity. When one person harms another, it ultimately comes from ignorance of that fact. It is the current resurgence of the intuitive feminine energy that takes our minds off the material world of separation and opens them to the spiritual. Great advances nearly always begin among smaller numbers on the periphery of a society. They work their way inward slowly, just as forging a new nation in the old West happened on the frontier, while it took time for the events to be absorbed in the settled areas back East.

This growing consciousness fueled by the feminine energy is in full swing among the group that has come to be known as the “Cultural Creatives.” These are people from all walks of life “whose values embrace a curiosity and concern for the world, and an openness to self-actualization through spirituality, psychotherapy, and holistic practices.” I have been attending holistic conferences for five decades now. Until perhaps ten years ago, if I was in a lecture with 200 present, there would have been 199 women and me. Guys just didn’t attend such way out, touchy-feely events. Now I consistently speak at large forums with thousands attending, and the audiences are almost equally divided. Something radical clicked within the minds of these men, because the “feminine” flavored content of these gatherings has not changed much. The number of people identifying themselves as religious is declining, while those who identify themselves as spiritual is rising. My book, Pope Annalisa is a spiritual thriller that I had to self-publish because it was too unusual for mainstream publishing. But in 2012, out of nowhere, actors and producers in Hollywood got hold of it, loved the content, and I signed a

movie deal. A new consciousness has made Hollywood ready for the book. The gateway to higher consciousness is balancing our male/female energies to make intuition and intellect work in harmony. A tipping point will occur when enough people awaken by personal experience to the true nature of our reality. We are the seeds of consciousness. One day, all those seeds will be gathered into the one basket from which we came. Then, as one great figure said, we shall be near the Kingdom of Heaven. About Peter Canova For the past 30 years, Peter Canova has traveled the world researching mainstream and alternative religious/ spiritual studies, along with quantum physics. He is considered one of America’s foremost authorities on the secret teachings of the Gnostic Gospels and the Sacred Feminine, and is the acclaimed author of the newly released spiritual thriller, Pope Annalisa, the winner of nine national book awards, including the Nautilus Gold Award for visionary fiction formerly bestowed on such authors as Eckhart Tolle, Deepak Chopra, and the Dalai Lama. The executive producers of the Academy Award winning movie, Black Swan, have signed a deal with Peter to produce a film adaptation of Pope Annalisa. www.PopeAnnalisa.com

Article Courage By Rebecca Zerbo

When writing about courage and what it means, I find that I express my thoughts much better in poetry. Courage and what it means to me!

Webster’s Dictionary defines courage as “The mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty, whether by yourself, or hand in hand.” People with cancer, loving, laughing, and LIVING, People with HIV and AIDS, working and giving. People who suffered a loss, moving forward, People getting over addictions, not moving backwards. People who are blind, learning to read, People who are deaf, learning to lead. People who don’t have arms, learning to write, People without legs, running with delight. Saying sorry after a messy fight, taking a wrong situation, and making it right.

Courage isn’t limited to religion, race, or sex, Courage is a characteristic, in which everyone respects.

Rebecca Zerbo is 14 years old and going into the 9th grade at Olympic Heights High School in Boca Raton, Florida. She is the CEO and Founder of Positive Pocket. moment of that adversity. What is it that allows us to create the immovable virtue of courage in our lives? Do we all have courage or is it a gift given only to the few? In his work Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle answered the question by expressing that all have a degree of courage. Courage, he felt, was situated in the center of a spectrum. On one hand was recklessness and on the other hand cowardice. Courage was in the center as the balance.

What do you think of when you hear the word courage? Do you think of bravery and a dangerous battlefield? Perhaps an important mission to accomplish? Do you think of a moment when you knew the right thing to do but stood alone in your convictions? Do you think of a moment when you found out that you had made a mistake and you knew that confessing it would cost time and money? All of these moments would no doubt require courage. Courage is symbolized by a proud and protective lion. Courage proceeds all other virtues as without courage it is difficult to practice any other virtue in the face of danger. According to ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, courage is a virtue that is only yours if you can sustain it in a moment of adversity. Courage is very much like artistic ability. It only appears in the works we create. A demonstration of courage requires adversity and activity in the

our personal inclinations and habits. Our inner voice is the most challenging enemy we will ever face. Buddha said it this way “ It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles.” Regardless of whether the adversity you are facing comes from external sources or internal sources the question remains how do you find courage when you need it?

AFrticle eature Personally I like this idea. We often hear people say that the first step is always the hardest to take when it comes to creating greater success or making change. I don’t believe this is true. Starting is pretty easy for most people. The hardest part about creating success is sticking with the task and finishing. According to Aquinas he would agree that it takes more courage to stick with a task and endure than it does to rush into the fight. My challenge to you is to first find love. Discover what is it that you really love and you will immediately gain power to find courage when you need it. And secondly, get committed to endure. Expect that adversity and challenges will come as they always do. But decide now that you will be courageous and endure.
