Annual Report, NBWM 2020

Dear Friends,

It is with gratitude and hope that we at the Museum looks back at 2020 and ahead to 2021. Since the onset of this pandemic, the Museum’s goals have been to ensure the safety of our visitors and volunteers; to keep our staff safe, employed, insured and productive; and to be a source of strength and hope for the diverse and vibrant community we serve.

We have achieved these objectives by being nimble and strategic, instituting intense expense management and making difficult decisions. In addition to dramatically reducing our non-payroll expenses, the Museum pivoted to focus staff on a new reality. Our shift to creating engaging virtual content fueled meteoric growth online, with virtual programs attracting 10,000 attendees and our videos drawing over 35,000 views in 2020.

We have continued leaning into our role as a community museum, and – with the support of our committed donors, members and community partners – reengineered our offerings in 2020 to remain resilient and relevant.

• Our Board and Staff finalized a 5-year strategic plan focused on four key goals: Welcome, Engage, Steward and Thrive. This strong plan will continue to guide our decision-making and resource allocation through the challenging and important years to come.

• We opened the online and in-gallery exhibition A City of Arts: Masterworks of Greater New Bedford, featuring classic works by regional greats alongside pieces by contemporary local artists and commentary by community members.

• We’ve focused on civic engagement and the centennial of women’s right to vote with Lighting the Way for All, a large-scale public art display on the exterior of the Museum, and complimentary series of virtual public programs.

We’ve honored some local heroes by donating more than 200 family memberships to New Bedford teachers, and by donating proceeds from the sale of our popular #BeLikeABlueWhale merchandise to frontline workers at SouthCoast Health.

This community has stepped up together to Light the Way Forward and ensure the Museum stays strong and vital in this unprecedented moment, and into the future. I thank you for supporting our mission to ignite learning through explorations of art, history, science and culture rooted in the stories of people, the region and an international seaport.
