This year’s theme evokes one of our most basic instincts – passion! Passion for life – for the countryside, for religion, for lovers, for music – with concerts presented within an array of historic churches across the beautiful county town of Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Guests include old friends and new. The Tallis Scholars directed by Peter Phillips will be returning to present ‘A Very English Passion’ in Beverley

Minster on Saturday evening, joining together the musical genius of William Byrd with compositions collected within the Eton Choirbook a century earlier, and we are delighted to welcome the Fitzwilliam Quartet celebrating their 50th anniversary year. These quiet passions are contrasted with the exuberance of Joglaresa, Block4 and the brilliant young vocal ensemble Cantoria joining us from Spain for a concert designed to show off the true passionate heat of the Iberian Renaissance.
Thanks are due, as ever, to the National Centre for Early Music for administering the festival and to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council for their financial support. We also would like to take the opportunity to thank a number of long-term supporters including Arts Council England, Schroders, Harrowells – and you, the audience. We look forward to seeing you all in May. Delma Tomlin MBE Director

A Very English Passion
This glorious programme draws together the music of William Byrd – a renowned Catholic composer of the Elizabethan era –with the music of an earlier generation within the Eton Choirbook – a volume of religious music created between 1500-1504 dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Two very English styles separated by a hundred years. Throughout the programme, there is the same love of sonority alongside a sense of profound contemplation. Together with Byrd’s Mass for Five Voices, we invite you to relish Fawkyner’s

“We have performed this work in a wide range of venues, from Cadiz where the work was commissioned, through to cathedrals, tiny country churches and modern concert halls across the world. Wherever and whenever, the work offers new insights into the music and what it represents; proving that the Passion story, and Haydn’s musical response to it, is
as relevant and meaningful for non-believers as it is to Christians of whatever creed.” Alan George “[FSQ] are Britain’s premier string quartet ensemble …the pride of that nation.” Fanfare fitzwilliamquartet.com

El Fuego The festival finishes with a flourish of Iberian passion from this remarkably engaging young group. Drawing on music from the Renaissance, we feel the hot winds of Spain drawing together stories of desire and passion taken from songbooks preserved throughout history which reveal a world of demons, saints and people struggling to survive – just as we do today! “They displayed exceptional musical and technical skill, with a commendable purity and stability of tone and intonation, making for perfect harmony.” Early Music Review
