Pride of their schools Matriculants’ hard work, dedication pays off } Sidwell Guduka ONE of the Free State’s top matriculants said it was not a surprise to learn that he had performed pretty well in his final exams. Lehlohonolo Motolo of the Lebohang Secondary School in Welkom achieved five distinctions in Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Life Orientation and Geography. The 18-year-old said he attributed his success to everyone at his school who gave him the support and to his parents. “It was not easy, I put in time to obtain these excellent results. I want to thank the
principal of the school, the teachers, my classmates and my parents for all the support and advice they gave me,” Motolo told Express. “I was not surprised to learn that I did so well. I have been working hard and attending extra classes throughout the year. I knew I was going to pass, but I didn’t expect to be amongst the top 100 learners in the province. Being one of the top performers came as something of a surprise,” he said happily. Motolo said he wished to study Medicine at the University of the Free State (UFS). “I was raised by my grandparents who are pensioners and they won’t be able to
send me to university. But I believe I’ll get a bursary to study towards a degree in Medicine. If, for any reason, I won’t be able to study Medicine I would look at other options,” said Motolo. Thabo Kobeli (19) of the Kgauho Secondary School in Botshabelo’s Section C1 also did well. Not only was he amongst the top 100 performers in the province, but he achieved five distinctions in Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Agricultural Sciences, Life Orientation and Life Sciences. “I’m very proud of the achievement. It was hard work and took a lot of dedica-
tion. I dedicate my success to the matric class of 2013 in the province,” Kobeli said. Tshepo Moleko (18) of the Senakangwedi Secondary School in Botshabelo achieved four distinctions in Accounting, Mathematics, Business Studies and Economics. “I’m really proud to say I got my four distinctions. “I’m also happy to be in the top 100. I have been working hard throughout the year and my hard work has paid off,” Moleko said. Both Kobeli and Moleko said they came from poor backgrounds. Their parents are unemployed and their families survive on child support grants.

Roses deal goes sour } Sidwell Guduka MAX TSHABALALA, the former owner of Roses United FC, is fuming with anger. The no-nonsense Free State businessman alleges that Sinki Mnisi, the man who purchased his club’s franchise, has failed to honour their contractual agreement. Now he wants him to pay up or else lose the club. Tshabalala sold Roses to Mnisi for a whopping R8 million in October last year, but the former has allegedly not seen a cent from the sale of the club which campaigns in the National First Division (NFD). Mnisi was supposed to have paid the first instalment of R4 million to Tshabalala by 31 December last year. However, he failed to do so as per their written agreement. The balance of the sale agreement was due to be paid on 31 March this year. “I’m very disappointed with Sinki. We did this deal in good faith, but now he doesn’t want to pay me. He failed to make the first payment before the end of last year and he has been quiet,” Tshabalala told reporters at a press conference in Bloemfontein on Friday. After the sale agreement
between the two gentlemen was finalised, Roses relocated to Tembisa in the East Rand where Mnisi hails from. But Tshabalala wants the club to return to Bloemfontein as a matter of urgency. “Mnisi must pay up or else I’m taking back my team. He has failed to honour our agreement. There was also a Cape Town businessman who was interested in buying Roses, but I turned him down, because I trusted Sinki. Now look what happens,” Tshabalala fumed. “The club is sitting in the relegation zone. I want to save it, I don’t want to see it going down to Division 2, because it will lose its value. The value of the NFD and Division 1 clubs is R10 million and R2 million respectively,” he said. Roses are sitting on position 13 on the 16-team log table after collecting 13 points from 14 matches. They have just 3 points more than 16th-placed Royal Thanda Zulu who have played 15 games. When asked to comment about the matter, Mnisi replied in an SMS, saying: “Mr Guduka thanks for your time, but unfortunately no comment, Sir.”

Christmas parties a hit } Sidwell Guduka

PULE MALEBO definitely knows how to throw a Christmas party to uplift the lives of impoverished children in his area. Just before Christmas day, about 200 children from the Shuping, Tambo and New Clare squatter camps in Mangaung, Bloemfontein, attended the annual Malebo’s Kids Christmas Party at the old shopping complex in Batho Location. Malebo, who works for Bloemfontein Celtic as a supporters liaison officer, said he had been inspired to host the annual event after he had realised that a large number of children in his area were living below the poverty line.
“The aim of the event was merely to interact with and celebrate Christmas with the kids and to make sure some of the disadvantaged children felt happy. The kids enjoyed their day to the fullest,” Malebo told Express. “I’m exceedingly excited and feel incredibly blessed to be able to plough goodwill and charity back into the community, as well as to make a difference in the lives of the children. “It was one the highlights of 2013. It was great fun playing games with the kids throughout the day,” he said. Malebo’s Kids Christmas Parties have grown bigger over the years because of sponsorships for the
event. “I started this initiative three years ago and I must say the 2013 party was the best because the turnout was quite big. The event would not have been possible without sponsors that came to the party. I would like to thank the Burning Spear Spur, Shoprite, Sinkie Leshabane, Kgosana’s Liquor Store and Bloemfontein Celtic for their support. I want this event to grow bigger this year and continue to grow over the years.” The kids who attended the party sang and danced and played games. At the end of the day, they were showered with small gifts. Most of the kids who attend Malebo’s parties are aged between 4 and 12.

Album on the way } Jabulani Dlamini
MUSIC ALL-ROUNDER, Angus Peterson, is about to release his latest album which he describes as hard work and weeks of fun. The album titled Peace of Mind will be available in music stores at the end of this month. “There is a vast difference in compositions and quality level between this latest offering and my previous project, Just Music. This latest creation is a result of a learning process, music development and performances. “The Peace of Mind project was a way for me to find my own unique voice, sound and brand as a musician,” this native from Heidedal said. The album also features two music veterans in the form of Peterson’s brother, Victor Peterson, known in music circles as Drakes, and saxophonist Alec Nortje. Drakes does the vocals on Beyond the Horizon while Nortje plays his favourite instrument on the track Saturday Groove. Activation on Tune Core is also in the pipeline to cater for the broader online distribution of the album. Born into a musical family 46 years ago, Peterson said he became involved with music during his primary school years and regularly participated in both school and church concerts.
The self-taught guitarist first picked up a guitar at the age of 12 and has not looked back since. “At 11 I was part of the Heidedal Trio and since then I have performed at numerous functions including weddings and corporate functions while my repertoire varies from jazz and fusion to pop and other contemporary genres,” the soft-spoken Peterson said. Amongst the events he counts as highlights are sharing the stage with international heavyweights like Tania Maria, Hugh Masekela and Jimmy Dludlu. These performances took place at the Macufe and Vuka Festivals in Mangaung for three consecutive years while Peterson was part of a band called Collage. Some of the corporate performances were the premier’s gala dinner and the executive mayor’s inauguration ceremony. This versatile musician was also the winner of the semi-professional category in the 1994 Shell Road to Fame National Talent Competition. “As an instrumentalist and vocalist I enjoy both solo and live band performances at any good venue. “I am flexible and always willing to look at suggestions to tailor my repertoire to entertain a broader spectrum of audiences,” he said. ) Peterson’s music video can be viewed at http://youtu.be/30kXZKabe6g.

Qualitas offers quality education QUALITAS CAREER ACADEMY is an accredited training institution with the Department of Higher Education and Training. This training institution was established in 2008 in Bloemfontein and also has sites of delivery in Kimberley, Newcastle, Vanderbijlpark, Tableview and George. Qualitas offers a wide variety of programmes on a full-time and part-time basis. Corporate programmes are also being delivered to clients according to their unique and specific needs. At Qualitas Career Academy the focus is on quality education. “With the standardisation of training where all accredited institutions basically offer the same national qualifications, it is important for us at Qualitas to differentiate our students from the rest by giving them additional knowledge and experience in order to prepare them better for the world of work,” says Jonathan Jensen, manager of the Qualitas Career Academy in Bloemfontein. “There are too many training institutions whose students cannot take their place in the job market because they are not equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to do the work.” “In May 2012 89% of our students who successfully completed their studies in 2011 already had a permanent job,” says Jensen. “At Qualitas we focus on theoretical as

Smaller classes also ensure that students receive personal attention. Full-time programmes being delivered in Bloemfontein include architectural draughtsmanship, business management, accounting, becoming a medical or legal secretary, executive support and office technology (Office Administration), public relations, international IT specialist (international Microsoft exams included), sound and electrical engineering, executive
caretaking (au pairing), hair design and wellness and beauty (health and skincare). Part-time evening classes, Saturday classes as well as full-time day classes are offered depending on which programme is being followed. “We are very excited about our brandnew programme in executive caretaking. This programme focuses on child and senior care and was designed as a GAP year programme. “A learner can take a year off, but still do something meaningful and get a qualification behind his or her name,” says Anra Faber, academic manager at the Qualitas Career Academy. “This one-year programme combines finishing, image consulting, au pairing and executive care skills. “Our programme in architectural draughtsmanship is entering its second year and we are very pleased to announce that one of our students from 2013 was already accepted at the University of the Free State (UFS) for the first year of the B degree in Architecture,” says Madelane Gerber, director of Qualitas Bloemfontein. This programme includes subjects on design, building construction, construction documentation, applied mathematics, physics and draughtsmanship. Qualitas is currently developing this into a complete 3-year diploma programme. The Qualitas Hair, Beauty and Wellness
Academy prepares students for the industry. They do not only get the necessary skills and knowledge, but also learn about the passion for the industry that makes them stand apart from others and makes them successful therapists. Wellness and Beauty students are also prepared to complete international examinations like ITEC and Cidesco. Hair design students can also complete their internationally recognised trade test as soon as they have completed their practical hours in the workplace. What makes Qualitas different from other training providers? Personnel have years of experience in their fields of expertise and they have been involved in the area of training for a number of years. Anra Faber and Vianda Kruger have more than 20 years of experience in the wellness industry while Gerber has been practising as an architect for more than 23 years. Jensen has been involved in the education and training field for more than 14 years. Career consultations for prospective students are being done in order to make sure that they make the correct choices about their future career. At the Qualitas Career Academy students get a quality education as well as personal attention to help them become the work force of the future.

Makeshift pool causes problems } Palesa Motshabi CHILDREN from Moshompela and Moikangoa Streets in the Bochabela Location have been using an open hole, more than 15 m in length, as their swimming pool. The hole has been left open by the municipality and has been left this way for five months. Residents of the location said they had complained at the municipality to close the hole. They said not only did it pose a threat to children who could fall into it, but the hole was next to the Bochabela Primary School, which opened on 15 January. Angry parents said although they had tried to warn children not to go into the dirty water, some swam in it. Masechaba Nche (48), a grandmother of a six-year-old boy whose name she did not want to mention, said she had beaten him after she had warned him several times not to swim in the dirty water. “The water is filthy and rubbish has been dumped into the hole. We’ve complained
Services ready DR BENNY MALAKOANE, MEC for Health in the Free State, visited health and medical centres in the province last Friday to determine the readiness of the health services ahead of the CHAN Tournament which is underway. “During my inspection I concluded that our operational plan will be executed with precision and determination. “Our medical centres are well equipped to deal with any emergency and are well stocked with the necessary medical equipment and medicines,” Malakoane said. The provincial Health Department has partnered with hospitals and emergency care services from the private sector. “Spectators to the matches hosted in Bloemfontein can rest assured that they are in good hands.”
again and again at the municipality, but nothing has been done,” said Nche. Another concerned mother, Golo Madilelo, said when she had recently walked past the hole, she had seen one of the children sitting next to it, appearing very ill. When she inquired about what was wrong, he replied that he had swallowed some water. “He had tissues in his nose to keep out the water,” she said. Express managed to speak to the young boys who were swimming in their makeshift swimming pool. Thabiso Rantidi (13) explained that all they wanted to do was to have fun and swim, but they could not afford to go to the swimming pool in Heidedal. “We don’t have R8 for the Heidedal Swimming Pool, so we’ll swim here,” said Rantidi. His friends all agreed with him and added that they just wanted to swim. ) At the time of going to print, Express could not reach the municipality for comment.

Spiritual happiness is eternal } Flora Teckie AS we start the year 2014 with joy and expectation, we all yearn for a better world of peace and security, for justice and unity. Lasting joy and establishment of peace and security result from material achievements reinforced by spiritual perfections and service to the common good.
According to the Bahá’í Writings: “Happiness consists of two kinds; physical and spiritual. The physical happiness is limited; its utmost duration is one day, one month, one year. “Spiritual happiness is eternal and unfathomable. This kind of happiness appears in one’s soul with the love of God and one suffers to attain to the
virtues and perfections of the world of humanity.” The Bahá’í Writings further state that “until material achievements, physical accomplishments and human virtues are reinforced by spiritual perfections, luminous qualities and characteristics of mercy, no fruit or result shall issue there from, nor will the happiness of the world of humanity,
which is the ultimate aim, be attained”. Happiness is being filled with joy, peace, love and a sense of well-being. Joy is the inner sense that can carry us through the hard times. We all go through times of joy and sorrow. There is no one who is untouched by these two influences. But when we look for the reasons for our sadness, we see that
FLORA TECKIEPhoto: Supplied
the sorrow and the grief come from the world of matter. But
the spiritual world imparts only joy. True and lasting joy is, therefore, closely related to spirituality. Lasting happiness is also conditional to our unity. The people and nations of the planet are being drawn closer together as we become more and more dependent on one another. However, this growing interdependence and
intensifying interaction among diverse peoples pose fundamental challenges to the old ways of thinking and acting. For instance, there is a common view and practice that we can unite only if we are of the same race, religion, nationality and ethnic, social and political backgrounds. We are often suspicious and mistrusting of those
who are not from the same background, or share the same allegiances, let alone entertain the thought of uniting with them. In the Bahá’í view, unless unity is attained - a unity that embraces and honours the full diversity of humankind - true peace and security will remain out of reach. The Bahá’í Writings prescribe: “Love ye all religions and all races with a love that is true and sincere and show that love through deeds and not through the tongue; for the latter hath no importance, as the majority of men are, in speech, well-wishers, while action is the best” and “Until all nations and peoples become united by the bonds of the Holy Spirit in this real fraternity, until national and international prejudices are effaced in the reality of this spiritual brotherhood, true progress, prosperity and lasting happiness will not be attained by man”. In this new year may we each and all be enabled to fulfil our high and noble aspirations; may each increase in spirituality; may we all experience lasting joy and happiness in our homes, workplaces and in our communities; may we each contribute our share towards peace, tranquillity and an ever-advancing civilization. Learners must be focused WITH the 2014 school year beginning today, Brand South Africa has urged all teachers to deliver quality education for the growth and development of the country. Brand South Africa has also called on learners to be committed to their future by focusing on their studies. Miller Matola, Brand South Africa CEO, said according to the 2013 Results for Learning Report, there has been an increase in the number of children attending and completing primary school as well as having access to lower-secondary school. “We have also recently welcomed an improved matric pass rate.” – SAnews

Dream reality for youngster } Sidwell Guduka OCEAN XI FC may be an unknown local amateur football outfit, but the future of one of their star players is looking bright. Tyrone Mondi (17) from Heidedal in Bloemfontein was chosen from thousands of hopefuls for a once-in-a-lifetime scholarship in the United Kingdom (UK). He jetted off to London, England, on Sunday. Leaving behind his friends and family, he is persuing his dreams of playing professional football after being picked by a scouting team led by Bolton Wanderers’ International Soccer School manager, David Bailey. “At the moment I’m feeling as normal as I always do. Obviously, when I touch down in Manchester, the feeling will definitely be quite different. Once I get over there I will just need to focus on both my job and education. “I’ll also have to keep my head down and my feet on the ground,” a down-to-earth Mondi told Express Northern Cape before he left the country for the UK. “I want to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, because not every youngster is as lucky to get it. I want to use this opportunity to learn and be one step closer to my personal dream of becoming a professional football player. “I feel really privileged, because every teenager wants to have the same opportunity I have. Everywhere I go people stop and ask me how I got it. They say they want their children to have the same opportunity I have,” he said. The former Brebner High School learner added that this would not have been possible without God. He said these things were made possible because he was faithful to God. “I’m grateful to God for this opportunity. I’m doing this

Ethiopia lost 0-2 to Lybia, and Congo were humbled 1-0 by Ghana. “We urge people to buy tickets in their numbers like they did during the 2009 Confederations Cup and 2010 Fifa World Cup,” Thabo Manyoni, executive mayor of the Mangaung Metro Municipality, appealed. Tickets for Friday’s matches cost R40 at CompuTicket outlets.
SHAKING HANDS: Tyrone Mondi with David Bailey, the International Soccer School manager of Bolton Wanderers. because God wants me to. I always tell my friends that once you come into contact with Jesus, it’s never the same. I just believe I should give back to Him because He has trusted me and He has given me the talent.” Mondi said he had never been away from his parents for a long time, but is sure he would cope. “I’m sure after a few weeks I’ll be settled in and get to know people. “As a footballer you have to adapt to every situation.
“I already have friends that side who underwent trials with me at Wanderers. One of them is from America and the other from South Korea. “Both of them stayed behind in England when I returned home in October. I’ll be catching up with them when I get back,” he said. Mondi’s trip to the UK was made possible through a threeyear partnership between the Free State Tourism Authority, Simsport International and Bolton Wanderes FC. Every year Wander-
ers’ scouts come to Bloemfontein, scouting for talent in the Free State. “Going into our fourth year with this project we are extremely excited at the possibilities for the future. “We are not only happy that we are providing opportunities for the boys from the Free State, but also promoting the province as a whole by means of targeted advertising in the UK,” Rasthoem Simons, general manager of Simsport International, said.

Wanderers send out scouts and coaches to find the best 80 young players for their Grand Skills Programme every year. They visit Nigeria, Canada, Colombia, Australia, America and many other countries to find the top players. Mondi has been offered a scholarship that will see him joining the Bolton Wanderers Academy and furthering his studies at the same time. His 18-month scholarship is worth about R395 000.
