DESPITE a no-show by two of the three listed respondents to receive their memorandum on Saturday (25/04), a march organised by the community of Oppermansgronde went ahead as planned.

The march was held from the community hall to the police station, a distance of less than 100 m, so many of the elderly community members – some as old as 92 years – could be accommodated.

Some people travelled from as far afield as Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg and Kimberley to participate in the march.

As reported in Express last week, the Oppermansgronde community

want the current Communal Property Association (CPA) executive removed and a new committee elected. The Oppermansgronde community and their descendants were given about 38 000 ha of land in 2003 following a successful land claim.

The community had initially demanded that Phillip Barnes, the current CPA chairperson, the Rural Development and Land Reform Department (RDLR), as well as the South African Police Service (SAPS), each would have a representative available to receive the memorandum.

“We are very disappointed that despite the department (RDLR) having committed itself in the

media to send a representative, no one was here to meet with us. It is very disappointing and disrespectful,” Julian Topkin, spokesperson for the marchers, said.

Topkin said if they did not hear from the RDLR, they would go ahead and choose a new committee and they would not give up until the current committee was removed.

“We want the mistreatment of the community and the mismanagement of finances by the committee to stop.”

Upon receiving the memorandum on behalf of the SAPS, WO Eugene Jacquire, acting visible policing commander of the Koffiefontein Police Station, promised to follow up on the grievances.

} Jabulani Dlamini MANY people with disabilities say with time they have learnt to live with their disability, but what really makes their life difficult is that society still lacks the understanding and patience these people need. In anticipation of the staging of In Blood, a musical with a cast made up of performers with various disabilities at the Sand du Plessis Theatre in Bloemfontein from 14 to 16 May, Express spoke to four individuals with various disabilities to learn more about their everyday lives.

Natus van Niekerk (40), who suffers from cerebral palsy, says he has made peace with his situation and is making the best of his life. He says his brain was starved of oxygen when he was born and because of this his father wanted to sue the hospital, but his mother convinced him otherwise and rather asked that their energy be channelled into making life as “normal” as possible for him.

Welkom-born Leon van Wyk also suffers from cerebral palsy and says doing everyday things can sometimes be frustrating because people do not have the understanding and patience needed to see him live a normal life. Van Wyk, who speaks with difficulty due to the cerebral palsy, lived a normal life even securing work as a plumber and working with his father before he passed away.

“Visiting my siblings (five siblings, none of whom are disabled) is virtually impossible because the public transport system simply does not cater for people like me,” the die-hard Kaizer Chiefs supporter says.

Natus, Charmaine, Dikeledi and Leon will be special guests at one of the performances of In Blood.

Challenge changes mindsets for me and that really helped me to be somewhat independent,” says Natus.

For Natus’s wife, Charmaine, a former staff nurse, life did not start out as that of a person with a disability.

“I was independent for 17 years until I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and I suddenly had to find other ways of doing everyday things,” she says.

Charmaine, who runs a copy and fax shop, says the biggest challenge she and others like her face, is changing people’s mindsets about those with disabilities.

Soft-spoken Dikeledi Shupinyaneng is a quadriplegic who suffered her fate in 1989 at the hands of her then boyfriend while they were both still in high school.

The 51-year-old says coming to terms with her condition was very difficult at first, but since she had learnt to accept her situation, the quality of her life has dramatically improved.

Annual project supports vulnerable children THE seventh Engo For Our Children project began on 23 April at the Bloem Show.

This annual fund-raising project in which a vehicle can be won, is run by Engo, together with Volksblad’s Central Local Newspapers, Imperial GM Bloemfontein and Radio Rosestad for the benefit of Engo Free State.

This year a lucky sponsor can drive away with a Chevrolet Spark Campus worth R119 500.

The goal of this project is to generate additional funds for children in Engo Childand Youth-care Centres, as well as children in foster care.

“We supported almost 4 000 children through this project in 2014,” Magda van Niekerk, director of professional services at Engo, said.

Engo Free State consists of six subprogrammes, which include Child and Youth-care Centres. “In 2014 the government subsidised only 26% of Engo’s total income, so this project is critical for the survival of our centres,” Jana Marx, Engo’s public relations officer and organiser of this project, said.

“Tickets cost only R20. By making this R20 donation, you are immediately entered into the Chev Spark lucky draw,” Marx continued.

When the Bloem Show ends, tickets can still be bought at all Engo Centres across the Free State, and at the information desk at Mimosa Mall.

No more, say fed-up farmers } Tladi Moloi FOURIESBURG. – Fed-up farmers in Fouriesburg say they have had it with their Lesotho counterparts deliberately letting their animals graze on their farms across the Caledon River and have vowed to kill any trespassing animals and their shepherds. Police, however, said they had agreed to let the animals graze on their farms in exchange for payment.

Maphale Moloi, the desperate farmers’ spokesperson, said although they had never threatened to harm their neighbours before, this was going to change.

“I am going to buy bullets and kill at least ten of them. That is the only way that the South African Police Service (SAPS) would react. Our police are not protecting us. We have reported this crime many times, but they have done nothing. I think we should now take the law into our own hands. I am even thinking of joining the Boko Haram so that they can help me with these troublemakers,” he said.

He said they would never stop from farming near the river.

According to Moloi, each of the farmers had lost about R1,2 million a year because of the damage caused by their neighbours.

“We have been talking to those people for a long time and they don’t listen. We will show them what we are made of.

They are unrepentant because every time we find them on our farms they fight with us as if the farms belong to them,” he said.

Moloi said they even engaged one of the village chiefs on the matter who had promised to talk to his people. “We were sitting on the South African side of the river with the chief and his people on the other side, just to show you how desper-

During Express Eastern Free State’s recent visit to the farms the cattle were standing in the river. According to Moloi, the animals flee to the Lesotho side of the river whenever they see or hear cars approaching.

“The only people they (the people from Lesotho) are afraid of are the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), but they (the SANDF) are not helping us in this situation. I always thought it was illegal for one to cross the river from one country to another, but it is happening here like never

before,” he said.

Const. Maselela Langa, in the Free State communication unit of the South African Police Services (SAPS), denied allegations that the police were not helping the farmers.

He added that there was no case registered with regards to the Fouriesburg farmers and the Lesotho citizens.

“During our own investigations, we found that those farmers had an agreement with the people to let their animals graze on their farms after they had harvested. The agreement was that the people from Lesotho

would pay them a certain amount.

However, the problem occurred when the animals grazed on areas not assigned to them,” he said.

Langa said the farmers illegally impounded those animals. “It is alleged that those animals were stolen by the farmers and now the Lesotho people want them back. As police officials we are not liable for such agreements,” he said. ) At the time of going to print the SANDF could not be reached for comment.

Ace urges FS to take stand FREE STATE PREMIER Ace Magashule has joined Pres. Jacob Zuma and South African citizens in strongly condemning violent attacks on ACE MAGASHULE foreign nationals.

“It is imperative that we label activities of criminals as nothing else but criminal, as the loving people of our country have co-existed since time immemorial with their fellow African brothers and sisters without any reported elements such as these incidents.”

He said although there had been no reported acts of violence against foreign nationals in the Free State, residents and provincial government had to get involved in government’s action plan to curb the attacks.

He encouraged everyone to take a firm stand.

“As part of our quest to build a better Africa and a better peaceful world, we have to start at home to raise awareness and educate our people. We have to engage in open dialogue that addresses the concerns of the nationals of the republic, as well as the concerns of foreign nationals.”

Society should not frown upon female sex workers THIS is becoming burdensome now. Every time a nimble pen is grabbed to address some social ill the pulse rises and the heartbeat becomes irregular.

There are many ways of earning an income, and most of them are referred to as either employment or self-employment (entrepreneurship).

The beautiful land has laws that govern these endeavours, hence some are considered legal while some are illegal.

Most fall between the clearly defined barrier lines X for example, one can be a self-employed like a street vendor selling fruit and vegetables, but one may not produce, acquire or sell, high schedule drugs without licence.

It is often easy for anyone with a dignified means of living to draw a hard and fast line to designate ‘means of living’ as either true and noble, or as unacceptable or illegal. One such unfortunate trade is prostitution or sex-work.

One only has to drive up Nelson Mandela Drive at night to see those ladies-of-the-night in all their splendour.

One can also drive (or walk) down Dr. Belcher Road through to R702 Dewetsdorp Road; turn right into the infamous Dinaweng Road that leads to the N6 to Kimberley.

Lo and behold, day and night they deck and adorn the roadsides with their sparkling presence scattered along a dusty foot path.

The entire community is responsible for relegating these, our sisters and daughters, to the outskirts of the corporate world, making them feel that their bodies are the only assets they have left to trade with.

With high levels of unemployment, the ever-increasing price of commodities and cost for services, what exactly does society expect of the unemployed?

This capitalist tendency of the general public to let the poor die so that the wealthy can enjoy their indulgences is appalling to say the least.

Women who use their bodies to earn their survival have equally as much right as do those who use other people while they themselves slumber.

Isn’t that what is done to mine and construction workers?

South Africa is not a socialist economy, so it is everybody for themselves out there.

Wouldn’t it be better, if every government official who holds more than one position, shed just one for an unemployed person?

Many people have dependents and yet they remain unemployed.

A child does not want to know if the parent is employed or not.

The child does not care about the parent’s work ethics.

All the child wants is food and clothes, not sentiments.

To perpetuate and build on what our forefathers did, we climb boastfully into our subsidised cars and drive to these places where sex workers park to demand their ‘forbidden’ services, and pay for them.

Why do motorists typically experience problems with their batteries during winter?

Batteries tend to run down in winter mainly because the battery’s acid gets cold and because of this, the car might struggle to start, but once it does, it will start normally for the rest of the day.

You can extend the life of your car’s battery by servicing it regularly (by professional battery specialists), and you can also check it regularly for leaks and out of the ordinary things.

You can check that the battery terminals (on the car) and battery poles (on the battery) are always clean.

What should you never do when it comes to your car’s battery?

Never swop the battery terminals (by connecting the negative terminal to the positive pole or vice versa) as this can seriously damage your alternator and never rev your car when it is idling and has no battery inside.

Self-driving cars might be here soon SELF-DRIVING vehicles hold the key to reducing traffic fatalities and will transform the automobile industry, predicts a top Google executive.

Ray Kurzweil, a leading expert in artificial intelligence who joined Google in 2012, told the annual Conference of the Society of Automotive Engineers that the rapidly declining cost of computing power and the advances in artificial intelligence would make autonomous driving a reality. He told the audience that autonomous driving, utilising artificial intelligence, was definitely coming.

Millions of lives saved “The technology works. It is not far away.

“Google advised me to share with you they don’t know the answer . . . the technology is not going to be introduced until it’s ready,” Kurzweil said.

He was not, however, prepared to say just when self-driving cars would become a common sight.

The need and value of autonomous vehicles were clear, he told hundreds of the industry’s top engineers.

“Google cars have gone close to a million kilometres without incident.

“Some day an autonomous car will cause an accident and it will be big news. But while we’ve been talking, several people have died due to human drivers.”

Autonomous cars were ultimately going to save millions of lives, he said, noting that traffic accidents kill 1,2 million people worldwide each year.

“They also provide more efficient use of roads and parking lots. There are a lot of benefits.”

He said Google was not going to let its self-drive cars into the market until they were safe adding that they had to be much more reliable than the technology they replace.

Transformation needed The appearance of the original Google Car prototype touched off a race among the world’s automakers.

Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Nissan have set up engineering centres near Google’s headquarters in Silicon Valley to focus on self-driving technologies.

“People will still buy cars, but the uber model with self-driving cars will become very popular.

“We should share our cars. I think that model will grow when we have autonomous cars.

“Every company has to reinvent itself. Not everything is predictable.”

tation industry, including the automobile business, had not been considered part of the digital world.

“We see information of every kind coming into every form of transportation.”

At the same time, the price of digital information was dropping dramatically.

Kurzweil said disruptive technologies became feasible at different times. Search engines, such as the one developed by Google, became practical in the late 1990s because of the exponential growth in computing power.

As for slower-moving technologies like batteries – the key to more electric cars – he predicted longer-lasting batteries in ten to 15 years, at a more mature phase of nanotechnology where you can manipulate matter on the atomic level.

Other technology, such as solar power, is developing more quickly than many experts expected.

VW enthusiasts invited to Phakisa } Kevin Jenkins TRENDY Volkswagen models will be on display for public viewing during a one-day Extreme Festival scheduled for Saturday (02/05) at the Phakisa Raceway.

The event marks this year’s 80th anniversary of the Volkswagen Beetle, the 60th anniversary of the Karmann Ghia, and the 60th anniversary of the Volkswagen Kombi, in South Africa, along with the 50th anniversary of Formula Vee racing in this country.

If you are the owner of a Volkswagen Beetle, a Karmann Ghia, or the original Volkswagen Kombi, bring your car and family to the Extreme Festival race meeting at the Phakisa Raceway on Saturday.

There will be a special parking area designated for members of the public who bring their Volkswagen to show off and share experiences with other Volkswagen enthusiasts. The participants will also have the opportunity to see the Formula Vees in action and meet and chat to the drivers.

A Formula Vee is a single-seater racing car, originally based almost entirely on Volkswagen Beetle components. The first Formula Vees in South Africa ran a 1 200 cc air-cooled Beetle motor in a tubular space frame chassis with either fibre glass or aluminium body panels.

Other Beetle components included the beam front suspension with the shock absorbers mounted on the shock towers in the standard Beetle configuration, the Beetle drum brakes, standard Beetle 15 inch “Marie Biscuit” wheel rims and the Beetle steering box and gearbox. In order

to create a mid-engine single-seater racing car, the engine and gearbox had to be turned around and the crown wheel and pinion mounted on the other side, in order not to end up with four reverse gears and only one forward gear.

Over the years, the category has evolved.

In 1968 the 1 200 cc air-cooled Beetle motor was replaced with the 1 300 cc air-cooled Beetle motor.

Then in 1990, that was replaced with the 1 300 cc water-cooled Citi Golf motor, using an adaptor plate to mate it to the old Beetle gearbox, which was retained and is still in use today, along with the Beetle front beam.

The Beetle steering box has, however, been replaced by rack and pinion steering, the shock absorber towers have been removed from the front beam and the shock absorbers mounted internally with push and pull rods in front and a mono shock at the rear. The drum brakes have been replaced with disc brakes and mag wheel rims are now in use, fitted with Hankook semi-slick tyres.

The most recent engine upgrade took place in 2004, when the 1 300 cc watercooled motor was replaced by the 1 400 cc Citi Golf motor, which is fitted with a regulated performance cam shaft and twin carburettors.

Saturday’s meeting offers the public a chance to meet the drivers and to get a close-up look at these amazing little single-seater racing cars, especially if you drive any of the Volkswagen products whose components have been used by the category over the years. A number of Formula Vee racing cars have also been built in Welkom and raced around the

country and at the old Welkom, Goldfields circuit, over the years and if you still have one, dust it off, give it a bit of a spit and polish, bring it to Phakisa and put it on display, along with the Beetles, Karmann Ghias and Kombis. Enthusiasts are sure to love seeing it again.

Roadkill investigated A SURVEY conducted by the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) revealed some of the causes of wildlife killed by passing traffic, commonly referred to as roadkill, in South Africa.

The survey was conducted by the EWT in the Pilanesberg National Park, North-West, from 21 October to 23 November 2014 and consisted of on-site investigation of roadkill, as well as questionnaires completed by visitors to the park.

Of the 120 incidents of roadkill observed by researchers, 62 were amphibians, 27 reptiles, 20 birds, 10 were mammals and 1 was unidentified.

Speed and roadkill One of the most interesting aspects of the project was the role inattentive drivers played in animal deaths. The survey showed that most drivers monitored adhered to speed limits.

The EWT’s wildlife and roads project leader, Wendy Collinson, said: “More than 95% of respondents to the questionnaire survey believe that speed is the sole cause of roadkill. Our aim was to investigate this issue in more detail.”

Compliance with park speed limits was determined to be high, with 72% of the 6 981 vehicles monitored driving at or below speed limits. To investigate the role of speed in determining rates of roadkill, the research team placed fake animals on the road and observed the behaviour of 201 drivers.

Collinson said: “Of these drivers, almost 70% were considered to not be looking at the road, but rather scanning the bush for wildlife.

“This suggests that many roadkill in national parks happen because of the expectation that animals are to be found in the habitat alongside the road, rather than on the road.”

The team did not find a significant relationship between the number of fake animals hit and the speed at which the

vehicles were travelling, with 71% of drivers hitting animals when assessed to be driving less than 20 km/h, 62% when driving at 20 to 40 km/h and 74% driving more than 60 km/h.

Collinson commented: “From our survey, it seems that observation levels of the driver, rather than the speed of the vehicle, is the key factor in preventing roadkills.”

Drivers should be more aware “One of our recommendations from the latest roadkill survey is that a driver awareness campaign be launched in parks to make drivers more aware of animals on the roads themselves.”

She said she was concerned about the low awareness levels of animals killed on the road among park visitors.

Collinson said: “Of the 284 respondents who had visited a park previously, only 2,8% had noticed roadkill, with 6,3% noticing a roadkill on their current visit.”

The next stage of the project will shortly commence in the Addo Elephant National Park.

VW gives Golf a power boost VOLKSWAGEN expands its best-selling Golf GTI range with the addition of a new Performance Pack.

The Golf GTI Performance Pack improves power output from the two- litre turbocharged petrol (TSI) by 7 kW to 169 kW (162 kW in standard GTI guise) though torque remains at 350 Nm. It’s top speed is rated at 248 km/h and equipped with the performance pack it reaches 100 km/h in 6,4 seconds. Fuel consumption is rated at 6,4 litres/100 km with emissions of 149 g/km.

Enhanced handling, performance The Golf GTI Performance Pack is only offered with DSG transmission and adds Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) and an electronic front differential lock.

The DCC system offers three driving modes: comfort, normal and sport. In sport mode, damping is increased (which reduces movements of the body structure) and engine response and shift points of the DSG are configured to be even more dynamic.

“A newly-engineered electronic front differential lock is being used exclusively in the Golf GTI Performance Pack,” VW states.

“Compared to purely mechanical locks, the front differential lock integrated in the Golf GTI Performance Pack offers advantages such as a variable degree of

locking and comprehensive interfaces to the ESC, EDS and XDS+ functions.”

Style tweaks The Performance Pack adds a red GTI logo at the rear, on its front brake callipers and larger, ventilated brake discs (340 mm front, 310 mm rear).

The Golf GTI Performance Pack can be customised with a number of optional extras including xenons, Discover Pro Radio with satnav and keyless access (keyless locking and engine starting).

The Golf range of performance derivatives, Golf GTI and Golf R, account for about 60% of the monthly sales of the seventh generation Golf in South Africa.

Ring spotted around Chiron } Dr Nicola Loaring ASTRONOMERS at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), America, have recently detected what may be rings around a minor planet in our solar system named Chiron.

While the planet Saturn is famous for its spectacular ring system, all the gassy giant planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) have rings. There is also another object, a minor planet called Chariklo, which has rings.

Chiron and Chariklo belong to a class of minor planets called centaurs: small rocky bodies that possess properties of both asteroids and comets.

These objects are found in a band between the orbits of Jupiter and Pluto.

Prior to the discovery of Chariklo’s rings, scientists had thought that centaurs were relatively dormant objects. The latest discovery of a possible ring system around another centaur, Chiron, if confirmed, suggests that ring systems are far more common in our solar system than previously thought.

“Until Chariklo’s rings were found, it was commonly believed that these smaller bodies did not have a ring system. The likelihood that Chiron also has a ring system prompts fundamental questions about how planetary rings form

and evolve,” says Dr Amanda Gulbis (SAAO), co-investigator in the study.

Gulbis at the South African Astronomical Observatory and her collaborators were first alerted to the possibility that Chiron has a ring system following observations conducted in November 2011.

Chiron was observed passing in front of a bright star, an event known as a stellar occultation. Using Nasa’s Infrared Telescope Facility on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, and the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network at Haleakala, Hawaii, astronomers monitored the brightness of the star’s light as it was occulted by Chiron.

In addition to seeing the expected drop in brightness as Chiron passed in front of the star, they identified features in the data indicative of a disk of debris around the centaur. The features could be explained by either a ring system around the centaur, a circular shell of gas and dust around the centaur, or symmetric jets of material shooting out from the centaur’s surface.

In order to observe the occultation event, astronomers had to work out if and when the centaur would pass in front of a bright star. They began charting the orbits of Chiron and nearby stars in 2010 in order to pinpoint exactly when the centaur might occult a

bright star.

They calculated that a stellar occultation would occur on 29 November 2011, and reserved time on two large telescopes in hopes of observing the event.

They knew they would have to be fortunate to catch the occultation which would last just a few minutes.

Dr Amanda Bosh, a leader on the project and a lecturer in MIT’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, says: “There’s an aspect of serendipity to these observations. We need a certain amount of luck, waiting for Chiron to pass in front of a star that is bright enough.

Chiron itself is small enough that the event is very short; if you blink, you might miss it.”

The group analysed the light received from the star during the occultation event and detected something unexpected. A simple body, with no surrounding material, would create a straightforward pattern, blocking the star’s light entirely. However, astronomers were surprised to find that a small fraction of light from the star was blocked just before and just after Chiron passed in front of it.

There were actually two dips in brightness before and after the occultation suggesting that there could be two separate rings of material around the centaur. Judging from the dips in intensity of the star’s light,

astronomers have calculated that the two possible rings are located about 300 km from the centre of the centaur and are around 3 km and 7 km wide respectively and separated by a distance of around 7,5 km.

Astronomers are, however, uncertain as to exactly what form this obscuring material actually takes: It could be rings, a shell of gas and dust or symmetrical jets of gas and dust shooting out from the centaur’s surface.

“This result is particularly interesting because Chiron is a centaur – a relatively small, cold object that has an unstable orbit in the region of the giant planets. How does a body that is only a few hundred kilometers in diameter, and who’s orbit is only stable for a few million years, have a ring system?” asked Gulbis.

Several explanations have been put forward to explain how the centaur Chiron could have gained rings. One possibility is that another minor body broke up and the resulting debris was captured gravitationally around Chiron. Alternatively, the rings may have formed from leftover material from the formation of Chiron itself.

“Another possibility involves the history of Chiron’s distance from the sun. Centaurs may have started further out in the solar system and, through gravitational interactions with giant planets, have had their

orbits perturbed closer in to the sun,” says Jessica Ruprecht, a student at the MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory, who was the lead author on the manuscript.

“The frozen material that would have been stable out past Pluto is becoming less stable closer in, and can turn into gasses that spray dust and material off the surface of a body.”

An independent group has since combined the data obtained from this study with other data, and has concluded that the features around Chiron most likely represented a ring system.

However, researchers will have to observe more stellar occultations of Chiron to truly determine which interpretation: rings, shell or jets, is the correct one.

Mohokare Local Municipality hereby invites interested service providers to submit bids in order to be considered for appointment as a professional service provider for the supply and delivery of household water meters. The municipality intends to procure household water meters with the aim of obtaining accurate water readings which will ultimately improve revenue collection in Mohokare.

The 90/10 (Price 90 and B-BBEE Status Level of Contribution 10) Preference Points System will be used.

Lemao athlete by heart THE winner of SuperSport Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month for April is Tshenolo Lemao (15), a gr. 9 learner at the St Andrew’s School in Bloemfontein.

Tshenolo is an athlete by heart, but he also enjoys hockey and cricket. In this year alone, he had already taken part in five athletics meetings.

At the Central NWU Pukke Top 20 athletics meeting, he claimed silver medals for both the 100 mand 200 m-dash. Thereafter he won the 100 m and 200 m at the HTS Louis Botha Invitational and also improved his personal best to 11:15 seconds in the 100 m and 22:79 seconds in the 200 m.

During the Free State High School Championships, the Motheo Xhariep High School Championships and Free State Senior u.23 Youth, Junior and Sub-youth Championships, Tshenolo again obtained gold medals in the same events.

He was also awarded a trophy for the best sprinter and track athlete for all age groups in the HTS Louis Botha Invitational.

As part of the Free State Schools Athletics team that took part in the South African Schools Athletics Championships in Rustenburg, Tshenolo claimed the silver medal in the 100 m with a personal best of 11:05 seconds and a bronze medal in the 200 m.

He was selected to be part of the Free State team for the South African Track and Field Championship that took place in Bloemfontein from 9 to 11 April.

He made the finals of the 100 m and 200 m and achieved 4th and 5th positions respectively.

Tshenolo has also been a consistent performer on the hockey field for both his school and the Southern Free State team for the past three years.

Tshenolo’s motto is: Attitude is everything.

After humiliating the star-studded Mamelodi Sundowns by 5-0 in Atteridgeville two weeks ago, Celtic suffered a defeat at the hands of Maritzburg United in their next fixture, going down 0-1 at home.

The Mangaung outfit have claimed 37 points from 26 matches and they will look to collect more points to cement their top-eight standing in their remaining four fixtures.

Their next three league opponents are Ajax Cape Town, Free State Stars (both at the Free State Stadium), before wrapping up their 2013-’14 campaign at Moroka Swallows on 9 May. Phunya Sele Sele are placed fifth on the log and they are likely to finish the season in the same position if they win all their remaining games.

“Our target at the start of the season was to finish the campaign as high as the fourth position,” John Maduka, Celtic manager, told Express.

“But if we cannot achieve that, we would be happy to finish the season on fifth position. We are hoping to win all our remaining games to achieve our target.

Apart from Ajax, who are fighting for a top-eight spot, we are going to face teams that are in danger of relegation,” he said.

“All those matches are going to be difficult, but we are going to fight very hard to win them. We want to be among the top five clubs when the season ends on 9 May.” Maduka, who was born in Malawi, but moved to South Africa to further his football career in 1996, has appealed to those who were responsible for xenophobic attacks to stop it because it gave the country a bad name.

THE Toyota Cheetahs are desperate to redeem themselves in Saturday’s (02/05) must-win Super Rugby clash against the Stormers at the Free State Stadium.

Kick-off is at 17:05.

The Cheetahs have lost seven out of ten matches so far in the competition and they are in the precarious position of fighting to keep their dream of reaching the Super Rugby play-offs alive.

The side, which looked so promising after Round 2 of this year’s campaign, have blown more cold than hot this season and they will have to be fired up on Saturday to beat the resurgent Stormers on their home turf.
