111 – still going strong } Jabulani Dlamini

AT the age of 111, Mantele Msimanga has very few people on the planet who are older than her. According to her battered Identity Document, Msimanga of Bolata Village in Qwaqwa turned 111 on 16 July. “Do you see how old I am my child? You probably think you are seeing a ghost, don’t you? She asks in a smooth, but strong voice. Although she is now blind, Msimanga still has a fairly sharp memory and is thus able to recall her children’s as well as some of her grandchildren’s names. Several generations who can trace their lineage back to Msimanga held a party over the weekend to celebrate the old woman’s birthday. “I think my grandmother has lived this long because of her healthy fear of God,” Mpuse Mofokeng said. Mofokeng’s mother, Matshidiso Mofokeng, who recently went blind herself until a recent eye operation to remove a cataract restored sight to her one eye, stays with and looks after the old lady.

She said despite her mother’s very advanced age, she actually rarely ever became ill. “You would think I have to take her to the doctor regularly, but actually not, she is very strong,” Matshidiso said. Matshidiso said her mother had a healthy appetite for sweets with Liquorice Allsorts being a particular favourite, as she scratched around the wardrobe and pulled out a handful of the soft sweets and handed them to her mother. Asked how many grand- and great-grandchildren she had, Msimanga gave a hearty laugh and just shook her head amid a chorus of laughter from her family who had surrounded her to sing her Happy Birthday. Last week, the Sowetan newspaper reported the story of Johanna Mazibuko of Klerksdorp who at 119 had a claim to be South Africa’s oldest person. In June, the world’s oldest known person, Jiroemon Kimura of Japan, died at the ripe old age of 116. ) Go to www.expressnews.co.za to see a video of Msimanga’s family singing her Happy Birthday.

Unique festival held } Sidwell Guduka THE City of Roses is expected to come alive with the annual FNB Grey College Music Festival to be held later next month. This year’s event, which will take place on 30 and 31 August at the Sand du Plessis Theatre, promises to be a highlight on the Bloemfontein social and cultural calendar. The festival which was conceived by Dr Michau Heyns, ex-headmaster of Grey College in 1982, is a unique and the only event of its kind in South Africa. It was formally known as the Grey College Choir Festival and used to take place at the Centenery hall in the Free State capital. Later, it was moved to the Bloemfontein town hall to accommodate the growing number of audience. The Grey boys will be joined on the stage by legendary singer and songwriter Jak de Priester, the beautiful and talented Caroline Haasbroek and the exquisite voice of Valiant Swart. “We are thrilled with the artist line-up we were able to secure this year and rehearsals are going very well. “We always use artists from all over the

country. At the end of the show we always have the whole school on the stage; all the boys from the school sing as the mass orchestra,” Celeste Venter, the organiser of the event, told Express. “And the artists sing together with them on the stage. That’s a very nice thing to see and the boys enjoy that. “People can expect to be blown away. There will also be a few surprises during the shows,” she said. On 29 August, various children’s homes and old-age homes will attend the dress rehearsals, an afternoon of entertainment that many would not have had the opportunity to experience otherwise. They will also attend shows for free. “The idea is to treat them to enjoy the evening with us by just sitting back, relaxing and forgetting about everything. During the break we will give them something to eat and drink. “We have organised transport to take them to the venue and back home,” Venter said. First National Bank (FNB) has been the title sponsor for this festival for the past seven years. “By supporting an event of this nature

we would like to demonstrate our commitment to youth development and the arts. We are proud to be associated with an event that has established itself as a highlight on the Grey College cultural calendar, and which continues to deliver a most rewarding collaboration between our youth and experienced artists,” George van Staden, FNB’s regional manager: Banking Channels in the Free State, said. During the school’s 150th anniversary in 2005, the choir festival changed its colours and the name changed to the Grey College Choir Festival, which its purpose to enrich the wide variety of music talent of the Grey boys, giving them the opportunity with the top artists such as the following: Steve Hofmeyr, Laurika Rauch, DNA Strings, Theuns Jordaan, Nianell, Anna Davel, Dozi, Drie van die Bestes, Karen Zoid, Lize Beekman, Jennifer Jones, Charl du Plessis, Brandon October, Bianca le Grange, Coenie de Villiers and Romanz. Tickets cost R170 for both adults and children. They will be available from Monday at Grey College Secondary’s office. For any more information call 051-4441513.

Malema vs ANC

NATIONAL

} Selloane Khalane

EXPELLED from the ruling party in 2012, political analysts say the former ANC Youth League president, Julius Malema, is the ANC’s biggest opponent going into the 2014 national elections. Analysts say Malema’s newlyformed political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), is highly likely to secure enough votes to get a foot in parliament. The 2014 ballot is expected to feature a number of new political parties, including Dr Mamphela Ramphele’s Agang SA, SA First, a party of former members of the African National Congress (ANC) military wing, uMkhonto we Sizwe, and the EFF. The political analyst Hussain Solomon said the ANC was likely to win the elections by a 58% to 60% margin. The ANC has held a majority of the seats in the National Assembly since 1994, being re-elected with increasing majorities in 1999 and 2004, but had a slight fall in

its majority from 69% to 65,9% in 2009. “The party will lose votes to the EFF,” Solomon said. The political analyst André Duvenhage said it was highly unlikely that the ANC Free State would win the elections by an 82% margin, considering divisions in the province. During the party’s provincial conference the ANC Free State chairperson, premier Ace Magashule, promised the party’s national leadership an 82% victory in the elections. In 2009 the Free State clinched 71% of the votes, a drastic fall from 81% in 2004. “Forces of change in the Free State have defected to the EFF and that decreases votes for the ANC,” Duvenhage said. The political analyst Theo Neethling said Agang and the DA would compete against each other to secure votes from the middle class. “Whether Agang will have its structures in place prior to the elections is questionable,” Neeth-

ling said. “Agang does not have a charismatic leader like Malema who can connect with the ordinary people on the grass roots,” Solomon added. The ANC’s biggest opposition party, the DA, received 11,6% of the votes in 2009, up from 8,4% in 2004 in the Free State. Analysts expect Cope to lose votes following the party’s infighting over leadership positions. The Freedom Front Plus votes declined from 2,47% in 2004 to 2% in 2009 in the province. With criminal charges still looming over Malema, Solomon said it was not sure whether Malema would make it to the voting polls. “One has to wait and see if Malema will get prosecuted before the elections,” Solomon said. “There will be many more Waterkloof and Nkandla scandals before people stop voting for the ANC, but 2019 is a different scenario,” Solomon concluded.

RAF applauded for work DIPUO PETERS, the newly-appointed minister of Transport, has applauded the Road Accident Fund (RAF) for its sterling work. Peters said she thanked the RAF for “opening her eyes” during a visit to the RAF on the Road Outreach Campaign in Thabong, Welkom, on Saturday. The minister, accompanied by provincial, taxi and road safety officials, was impressed as she was first taken on a guided tour of operations at the Thabong community hall by RAF CEO, Dr Eugene Watson. With RAF executive and board members in tow, the day’s operations were outlined while hundreds of claimants made enquiries, finalised settlements and laid complaints of alleged fraud cases. The minister later addressed claimants and gave them the assurance that the RAF and government would be there every step of the way to give them the necessary support in the unfortunate event of accidents. She declared war on unscrupulous lawyers who “rip-off” claimants and prey on vulnerable road accident victims, questioning

how they could sleep at night after siphoning off money meant for deserving people. “Even if it means these lawyers losing their ability to practice by striking them off the roll, so be it.” Peters also sounded a stern warning to touts who lay in wait for ambulances that offload patients at hospitals after an accident then tip off lawyers. “I will speak to the minister of Health and minister of Justice to tackle this problem. We are not going to turn the RAF into a haven of criminality.” The delegation was particularly touched when they were taken on a home visit of 13-year-old Kamohlelo Radebe who was knocked down by a truck and sustained severe mental injuries almost ten years ago. Radebe gets financial support from the RAF and is being looked after by his grandmother as a fulltime caregiver, paid for by the RAF. He will be admitted to a boarding school next year. “If there was no RAF and no compensation, what would happen to a child like Kamohelo?” Watson asked.

SADD receives cheque for R60 000 ON Friday the country’s leading total beverage company honoured its commitment to South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD) and presented them with a cheque for R60 000. As part of its award-winning Drive Dry campaign, brandhouse committed to providing funds to the responsible drinking company should it reach a target of 3 000 online declarations made by the end of June. Earlier this month, brandhouse announced it had reached the

target and would honour its commitment. The target was met thanks to the many South Africans who declared to drink responsibly via the Drive Dry social media platforms. The website (www.drivedry.co.za) links to actual Facebook events and offers consumers two options – to declare to either “drink and not drive” or “drive and not drink”. “brandhouse continues to promote responsible drinking and encourage all consumers to take

responsibility for their own actions, which ultimately affects the lives of others too,” said Sibani Mngadi, external affairs manager at brandhouse, at the handover. The aim of Drive Dry is to change behaviour amongst consumers with regard to driving under the influence of alcohol. “We support civil society initiatives that have the same objective of curbing alcohol misuse. Top of the list is South Africans Against Drunk Driving,

which happens to have the same passion as Drive Dry in reducing alcohol-related carnage on our roads,” he said. Mngadi presented Caro Smit, founder and owner of SADD, with the cheque at brandhouse’s head office in Observatory, Cape Town. Smit started the SADD in 2005 after her 23-year-old son had been killed by a drunk driver. “On behalf of the SADD I would like to thank brandhouse for the cheque as well as the continued

support over the years. We are a non-profit organisation that educates South Africans about the dangers of drinking and driving. “We work together with partners such as brandhouse to save lives and bring down the death count,” says Smit. Both parties encourage South Africans under the influence of alcohol to make use of a designated driver or taxi services and public transport and incorporate responsible drinking as an active part of their social culture.

‘We won’t increase the stipend’

DR GWEN RAMOKGOPA, South Africa’s deputy minister of Health, says South African students studying medicine in Cuba are known for spending their student stipend on living a lavish life. “Our South African medical students are known for their opulence and wearing expensive brands in Cuba,” Ramokgopa said. Ramokgopa was addressing prospective medical students short-listed for the RSA-Cuba Medical Students Training Programme on Sunday at Bophelo House, Bloemfontein. Earlier this year 6 of the 187 South African medical students who had embarked on a hunger strike were recalled by minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi after they had refused to continue with their studies unless their stipends were increased. Students demanded a $500 increase to the $200 (about R1 600) monthly stipend they receive, bringing it up to $700 (about R5 600). The students were amongst 187 students who had gone on a hunger strike

over stipend increases and other grievances. “Government doesn’t have that kind of money,” Ramokgopa said. Ramokgopa said the R2 000 stipend given to students every month was only to cover personal items such as toiletries. Ramokgopa said the stipend was more than the salaries earned by professors and other educators in Cuba. With a serious shortage of doctors in the country Ramokgopa said the eight higher education institutions in South Africa did not have enough space to enrol prospective medical students. She said it would take 20 years to get the 20 000 doctors needed in the country if other prospective medical students didn’t study in Cuba. Ramokgopa said students had also complained about the Cuban food and overcrowded lodging. “We won’t increase the stipend,” she said. The South African government spends about R500 000 per student over six years for a language course, medical training and living expenses in Cuba.

Men and women should be treated as equals } Flora Teckie AMONG the pressing issues requiring our attention, particularly in the month of August, designated as National Women’s Month, is the need to remove the barriers hindering the progress of women in our societies. The progress and empowerment of women and attaining a status equal to men’s, is fundamental to the well-being of the earth and its people. The emancipation of women is not only necessary for the future well-be-

ing of our societies; it is also a prerequisite to world peace. In one of its recent messages, the Universal House of Justice, the governing council of the Bahá’í international community, states: “ . . . the equality of men and women is . . . a universal spiritual truth about an aspect of the nature of human beings . . . It is, above all, a requirement of justice. “This principle is consonant with the highest rectitude of conduct, its application strengthens family life,

and it is essential to the regeneration and progress of any nation, the peace of the world, and the advancement of civilization.” The well-being of mankind depends on the development of the potential virtues and abilities of every individual. Women and men compliment each other in their roles. The happiness and stability of humanity cannot be assured unless they are both perfected and treated as equals. According to the Bahá’í Writings: “The world of humanity has two

wings – one is women and the other men. Not until both wings are equally developed can the bird fly. “Should one wing remain weak, flight is impossible” and “the happiness of mankind will be realized when women and men coordinate and advance equally, for each is the complement and helpmeet of the other”. Bahá’ís view the equality of men and women as an essential aspect of a broader principle: the oneness of humanity. In the context of the oneness of humanity, equality of the sexes is

not only a requirement of justice, but it is a pre-requisite for peace and prosperity. According to the Bahá’í Scriptures: “ . . . men and women are equal in the sight of God . . . The only difference between them now is due to lack of education and training. “If woman is given equal opportunity of education, distinction and estimate of inferiority will disappear”. PMS will create jobs, promote safety } Sidwell Guduka

THABO MANYONI, the executive mayor of the Mangaung Metro, launched the Parking Metre Marshal System (PMS) last week. The event took place at Hoffman Square in the Bloemfontein CBD on Wednesday. Manyoni said he was happy with the introduction of the PMS, because it was a step in the right direction by his municipality. “This is quite a good step for us, because we have been seen as the only city that has free parking. Besides creating jobs, the system will ensure that our motorists and their vehicles are safe. Unlike the traditional parking metres, this one has a human element. These people, the parking marshals, can be the ears and eyes of the community and also of the vehicle owners,” Manyoni explained. “We are trying to get rid of the informal car attendants that you normally find everywhere in town who are trying to assist motorists with parking and demand to be paid for that. As a municipality we want to ensure that we have official parking marshals who are trained to do the job,” Manyoni also alluded the fact that the official parking marshals would be paid by his municipality. “The marshals will be paid by us and motorists don’t need to pay them any stipend.

THABO MANYONI, mayor of the Mangaung Metro. Parking tariffs: 0 to 30 minutes = R3,50 31 to 60 minutes = R7,00 61 to 120 minutes = R14,00 They are employed by the municipality to assist the motorists in our area. Drivers can give tips to marshals out of their own will, it is not compulsory. I want to reiterate that the marshals will be paid by the Mangaung Metro,” he stressed. The system will first be rolled out at the Charlotte Maxeke and St Andrew’s Streets, and then the city will later announce other streets where the PMS would be operating. Motorists will be expected to pay the marshals a set amount, depending on the time they will be parking. “Motorists should demand

a receipt after paying for the parking. We want to have records of all the transactions,” the mayor said. “At the moment we have employed 110 marshals. We advertised these positions and successful candidates were selected. All of them were verted to ensure that they don’t have any criminal records. “Ultimately we are going to need about 500 marshals to work across our municipality.” John Solomon, one of the marshals, said he was over the moon to be employed by the Mangaung Metro. “I want to applaud the mayor for providing jobs to us. This was long overdue. We are going to enjoy the benefits that other municipal workers get, benefits sush as UIF. I am so very happy.”

Career Fair keeps on growing

THE Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, helps combat unemployment with its annual Career Fair – connecting graduates to industry jobs. A record number of companies, including First National Bank (FNB), the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), registered to take part in the annual graduate recruitment event, hosted by the CUT on 24 and 25 July in the Boet Troskie Hall, CUT Bloemfontein Campus. “The career fair is a great networking event that we at the CUT host annually to bring potential employers under one roof to interact and network with our students,” Prof. Mabokang Monnapula-Mapesela, dean of academic development and support, said in her address at the official opening of the Career Fair. The first Career Fair in 2006 brought about only 16 employers. In 2013 the fair has attracted over 41 companies to showcase their portfolios and career opportunities for CUT students. It gives students the opportunity to meet face-toface with employers, explore different companies, get more information about various industries and learn more about job opportunities. “We have built strong relationships with government, business and industry and I am glad to say we broke the record this year in terms of a record number of employers who were involved in the Career Fair 2013. I am sure that our students will be recruited and considered for employment after the fair,” Monnapula-Mapese-

The event aims to link students to industry, giving them the opportunity to meet face-to-face with employers, explore different companies, get more information about various industries and learn more about job opportunities to combat unemployment of CUT students. Photo: Supplied la concluded. Present at the official opening was Dr Herman Mashaba, a CUT alumnus and founder of Black

Like Me. Mashaba shared his personal tribulations and triumphs as a young man growing up in the old South Africa where

opportunities for development were far and few in between. Unlike the youth of today, Mashaba said that he and many of

his peers never had the same opportunities to attend a university of their choice. The CUT Human Resources Management students also assisted with the preparation of student recruitment by managing a CV Clinic, where they gave advice on CV writing to other CUT students. “The annual Career Fair is not only limited to graduate recruitment, but is also an opportunity for attendees to build strategic partnerships and address the business development needs of the Free State. This event helps to generate an industry-ready workforce,” said Prof. Henk de Jager, deputy vice-chancellor: academic at the CUT.

Switch off your geyser between 5pm and 9pm.

Here’s why:

The reason we ask you to switch off your geyser between 5pm and 9pm, is that the country uses more electricity during this time and supply is under severe pressure. Switching off your geyser helps free up power for other things and relieves the pressure on the grid. Here’s an interesting fact, the huge demand for energy during the evening between 5pm and 9pm is the equivalent of one power station. There is an estimated 5,4 million electric geysers in homes across South Africa. 3YV GSQFMRIH GSRXVMFYXMSR QEOIW E WMKRM½GERX HMJJIVIRGI Switch off your geyser every day between 5pm and 9pm, and help us beat the peak to keep South Africa powered up. Gutter wins prestigious L’Atelier } Sidwell Guduka PAULINE GUTTER, a modern Bloemfontein artist, has been chosen as the overall winner for the 2013 Absa L’Atelier award for her work titled Die huweliksaansoek. For her efforts, the 33-year-old visual artist received R125 000 from Absa, a return air ticket to Paris and a six-month residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, France. “I’m so very happy to eventually win this award. I think I’ve been a finalist eight times already. Winning it is really like a dream come true. It is a special feeling for me,” Gutter told Express. “The prize money I won will be for my living cost in Paris. I’ll also have to use it to buy material and to do some research as well,” she said. Gutter completed her degree in Fine Arts (cum laude for painting) at the University of the Free State, obtaining honours in Arts and Culture. She previously participated in several competitions and also had her solo exhibition at the Aardklop National Arts Festival, the University of Stellenbosch Art Gallery, the University of Potchefstroom Art Gallery and Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein. Gutter’s work is widely recognised and is included in private and corporate collections both locally and abroad, but she remains committed to her home country.

Grant fund a huge boost for SMMEs in FS

ENTERPRIZE DEVELOPMENT will receive a much-needed boost in the Free State when the Economic Development MEC, Msebenzi Zwane, launches the R30 million SMME Grant Fund in Ezenzeleni, Warden, on Friday. Announcing this fund during his budget speech earlier this year, Zwane said: “Operation Hlasela, through its power, has enabled us to interact with the people of the Free State, and we have realised that the needs of our people differ from region to region, stretching from Fezile Dabi to Xhariep. “We are now at a point where we have products, services and programmes that will unleash the economic potential of our people,” he said. Hundreds of survivalist businesses on street corners, pavements and small shelters throughout the Free State will benefit from the fund. Zwane said the initiative came after the Free State provincial government had realised these people had nowhere to go for assistance even though they also contributed to the fight against poverty, hunger and unemployment. On Friday, the department and its three entities, the Free State Development Corporation (FDC), Free State Tourism Authority (FSTA) and Free State Liquor and Gambling Board (FSLGA), will present its “bouquet” of services to the community of Warden and the surrounding areas. This will range from an SMME Incubation Programme with specific reference to a school competition for the best business concept; repositioning the FDC; promoting consumer protection and education; vigorous marketing of the Free State as a preferred inland tourism destination and the Green Campaign Project.

KAIZER CHIEFS celebrate winning their first Carling Black Label Cup title at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday. Photo: Sydney Mahlangu/Backpagepix

Carling Black Label Cup win first for Chiefs

} Sidwell Guduka “IT is often said that derbies are dull affairs, but this was definitely not a dull affair,” Stuart Baxter, Kaizer Chiefs coach, told journalists in a postmatch press conference on Saturday. This was after Amakhosi had defeated their old foes Orlando Pirates 1-0 in the Carling Black Label Cup encounter at the FNB Stadium. “This was a tight affair. And I must admit that Pirates gave us a run for our money. In the first half, they were all over us and we kept on making some poor decisions with the ball. Pirates took advantage of that. They had a few chances to score, but were unlucky. Our defenders were brilliant and they

defended our box very well. So that’s why it was a tight game,” Baxter said. “The second half for us was both heaven and hell. We were defending the box very, very strongly. We knew Pirates would come on the longer the game went and we had some very good transitions, but we gave up some very good chances,” he added. The win of Saturday was the first for Kaizer Chiefs in the Carling Black Label Cup. Pirates won the previous two editions of the competition by penalties. “Pirates put us under a lot of pressure and I’m just happy to get away with a win. It is nice to give the Chiefs fans the long-awaited Carling Black Label Cup because Pirates had domi-

nated,” an elated Baxter said. Now Chiefs will shift their focus to the Absa Premiership League which kicks off on Friday. The Glamour Boys will begin their campaign with a tricky match against Mpumalanga Black Aces at the Mbombela Stadium on Friday. Kickoff is at 20:00. “It is going to be another tough match for us because every team wants to beat Chiefs. We are ready for the season ahead. Our aim is to start with a win like we did last season,” Baxter said. ) Sidwell Guduka, Express sports editor, attended Saturday’s match in Johannesburg courtesy of Carling Black Label.

WITH winning performances from both outfits in round five, the Engen Racing Team prepares for a strong showing at the Phakisa Raceway in Welkom as they enter the second half of the season on Saturday. This will be the first time that all four of the team’s cars will race on the same track since their race meeting at

the Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria in May. With the Engen Xtreme drivers tackling the street race at the Top Gear Festival in Durban and the Engen Primax racers at the East London event, the Engen-sponsored racing teammates will look forward to sharing the national race day tarmac again.

Defending champion and championship leader Michael Stephen and his teammate, Tschops Sipuka, will tackle the Bridgestone Production Car Formula in their Engen Xtreme Audi S4s with championship leader Kosie Weyers and Mandla Mdakane contesting the Engen Volkswagen Cup in their high-performance Vivos.

Injured player on road to recovery } Sidwell Guduka MARTIN GROENEWALD is said to be recovering well after suffering a horrifying injury on Saturday. The 18-year-old lock of the Grey High School in Port Elizabeth broke his tibia and fibula in the shin area during a Mutual and Federal Premier Inter Schools match between Grey College and the Grey High School at Grey College in Bloemfontein. Grey College won 50-28. Groenewald lay motionless after a legal tackle by College defenders, his leg lying mangled in an unnatural position. The encounter was broadcast live on SuperSport and images of the horrific break were beamed to homes across South Africa. He was rushed to the Mediclinic Bloemfontein for medical attention. The news of Groenewald’s injury spread like wild fire. By midday on Monday, the YouTube clip of the incident had attracted more than 150 000 viewers. Volksblad, parent paper of Express, reported on Monday that the injured young man had not seen that video on YouTube. “And I don’t want to see it. My leg was bent at a 90 °-angle,” he said. Groenewald, who represented Eastern Province u.18 at Craven Week at the beginning of the month, has been discharged from hospital and will today travel to Humansdorp with his family.
