Academic zeal rewarded Schools receive infrastructure after achievement improves

} Tladi Moloi ANGIE MOTSHEKGA, the minister of Basic Education, says gr. 12’s should stop listening to people who keep on saying they need 30% to pass their national examination. She says 30% will take them nowhere in this country. “We want you to get an A, B or C. If you get 30%, you will go nowhere. You should work hard. It is time that you forget about everything else and concentrate on your books.”

The minister spoke at the Thokoana Makaota Secondary School during the launch of the Beyers Naudé Schools Development Programme’s (BNSDP) infrastructure programme at various schools in the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality area on Thursday. The Free State Department of Education and the Kagiso Trust handed over infrastructure facilities to high schools and one primary school as part of rewarding them for obtaining a higher than 80% gr. 12 pass rate and above 60% on the Annual National Assessment (ANA). The schools that benefited from the pro-

gramme were Nkarabeng, Khetha Tsebo, Thokoana Makaota, Mohato, Makgabane, Dinare, Mosioua Lekota, Thalabodiba and Makeneng Primary School. “I want to thank the teachers, because there was no way that we could produce the good results without them,” Motshekga said. About R13 million have been injected into the programme to build Science laboratories, computer centres and libraries for high schools and a Mathematics laboratory for primary schools. “I want to thank the Kagiso Trust for their support,” she concluded.

Tate Makgoe, the Free State MEC for Education, said: “We saw the improvement of results since our marriage with the Kagiso Trust. If you look at the Maluti-a-Phofung pass rate in 2009, it was 67%. Since we have been working together the results have improved to 81%,” he said. Kgotso Schoeman, CEO of the Kagiso Trust, said the school was responsible for the safety of the infrastructure and the computers. He said the community should also help, because that was for the future of their children.

Kunene quits the EFF UIF number lessens costs

BUSINESSMAN Kenny Kunene has quit his leadership positions in the newly-formed Economic Freedom Front (EFF) with immediate effect, it was reported on last week Wednesday. Kunene told The Star newspaper that he was resigning from his position on the central command team as well as his role as the head of campaigns, mobilisation and special projects, after “considering a lot of things”. He added that there were still decisions to be made on the way forward. “Obviously I would like to see

economic freedom being realised and I will remain an economic freedom fighter for ordinary people. The direction I am taking from now will determine if I will still be active in the EFF,” he told The Star. Kunene, known as the “Sushi King”, was seen as a crowd-pulling asset for former ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema’s new political party. He said Malema had “accepted and respected” his resignation, and that he still believed the party has a future “even when I am not there”. – News24

THE Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) has put in place a new toll-free number to assist and save its beneficiaries costs when calling the UIF call centre. The toll-free number (080-084-3843 or 0800 UIF UIF) will be a welcome relief to more than 20 000 of UIF beneficiaries who call the UIF on a monthly basis. The previous number, 012-337-1680, meant that UIF beneficiaries who were already facing financial difficulties bore the costs of making a call to the UIF to enquire about its services. “It gives me great pleasure to inform UIF beneficiaries about the new toll-free number. It is a great pleasure to know that the new number will lessen the financial burden when doing business with the fund,” the UIF commissioner, Boas Seruwe, said. The previous number, which is widely used by UIF beneficiaries, will continue to be operational, but UIF clients are encouraged to save costs and use the new number. Beneficiaries can use the new number to enquire about any services that the UIF provides.

Employees’ commitment celebrated } Tladi Moloi MONICA NOOSI was the overall winner during the Bethlehem Social Development gala dinner and awards ceremony which was held in the NG church in Bohlokong, Bethlehem, on Friday evening. She won the awards for best organiser of the year and friendliest official respectively. Noosi said she did expect an award, but pointed out that two were more than she thought she would get. “I knew that an award was coming my way, because I have been going the extra mile to bring about change in the office,” she said. Noosi said the awards meant that she was appreciated and all the hard work had finally paid off. “I just want to thank those who voted for me. This was a confirmation that my colleagues loved everything that I had organised for them,” she said. She said she would love to win an award next year, but she would not go out of her way for an award. “If by simply being me I can get something, so be it,” she concluded. Hadio Moloi, the acting assistant manager in the Bethlehem office, said the event was aimed at motivating the employees and it was also part of team building. She said they knew that the Bethlehem of-

fice was a centre of excellence. “The event was successful even though it was the first time we hosted it. We are hoping to make it and annual event. We want other Social Development offices in the province to follow our example,” she said. Moloi congratulated the winners and pointed out that those who did not win were not failures, but in the end there could be only one winner.

Women encouraged to help police root out crime } Reporter AS we approach the end of Women’s Month, the women in blue, together with women from different churches and organisations, recently held a Women’s Month celebration at the Arlington town hall. About 40 women attended the event. The purpose of the event was to sensitise women in Leratswana about domestic violence, crime against women and children and building partnerships with other stake holders to fight crime. Capt. Ntswaki Liphapang from the South

African Police Service’s (SAPS) Employee Health and Wellness Unit, based at Bethlehem, informed the women about the importance of reporting any form of abuse and domestic violence to the police. She also educated them about parenting, as children are also victims of sexual offences and drug abuse. The event ended with a church service which was conducted by women from different churches around Leratswana at Arlington. Women of Leratswana committed themselves to working hand in hand with the police to fight crime.

Training shapes new entrepreneurs

} Tladi Moloi

THE government has been preaching to young people to create jobs, but the big question is: Do they have the skills to do this? The Catholic Community Service is offering to help the youth with this. This NGO, which cares about the youth, has given life skills training to about 12 young people in the Eastern Free State. This training, which was conducted over 15 days, focussed on both those who wanted to start their own business and those who already have. The Catholic Community Service was launched in 1997. Its vision is to work with others to eradicate poverty and strengthen community organisations to bring about healthy and compassionate communities in the Eastern Free State. It is based at the John Paul II Centre which is known to many as Eden. It is found west of Bethlehem, about 5 km out on the Paul Roux road. Refilwe Mofokeng (24), who hails from Bohlokong near Bethlehem, said her life had changed after attending the training. She said before she felt like life owed her something, because she was not working. “I felt like I belonged in an office with a computer near me, but until today I am not working. However, I have learnt that I could be a leader,” she said. Mofokeng completed her matric in 2009 at the Tiisetsang Secondary School. She then enrolled at the University of the Free State (UFS)

where she studied BA Political Science. However, she dropped out because of financial problems.

Katleho Mokoena (23) from Makwane village in Qwaqwa is a construction company owner and

he said attending the training was valuable. He said he had learned a lot and that he would surely

implement some of those things in his company. “I am still young in this industry and to grow, I should keep on attending training and workshops. We had a chance to mingle with the established businesspeople and they shared their frustrations with us,” he said. Mokoena said the challenges that he faced were to find skilled youth in Qwaqwa and also getting big companies to give him business. “Now I know how to approach big companies and believe you me, my company will be one of the best within the next few years,” he said. Mawala Zondo, co-ordinator of the Thuthukani Training Programme, said this training session was the second of the three that they would host this year. He said they had one early in the year where they had trained those who had finished matric on how to apply for a job and what to expect at the interview. “On this second training session we focused more on starting businesses. Many of our youth are not working and we believed they could start something, rather than just sitting at home for the rest of their days,” he said. Zondo pointed out that the attitude that he had witnessed from the youth who attended the training was positive. “We are going to make sure that they start something. After that we will go out and try to get them funding,” he said. He said they were hoping to have their next and last training of the year in October.

AMENDED CIDB REGISTERS REGULATIONS CAME INTO EFFECT ON 01 AUGUST 2013. The Minister of Public Works has published reduced cidb requirements for contractors to register on the cidb Register of Contractors. The changes, which come into effect on 01 August, 2013 were published in Government Gazette No: 36629 of 02 July 2013 following a process of consultation and public comment. The amendments are intended to create better alignment of the Register of Contractors with the construction industry as well as the state of development of the emerging sector. Available on the cidb website: www.cidb.org.za the amendments to Construction Industry Development Regulations of 2004 introduce: Removal of Registered Professionals: Contractors no longer need to have professionals in their employ to qualify for certain Grades. Clients may specify required professionals at point of tender based on the specific project. Periodic Review of Tender Value Limits: The Minister must review the tender value limits at least once every three years. Adjustments may be published annually depending on market conditions. Reduced Track Record Requirements for Grades 2 to 9: The largest project completed requirement for Grades 3 to 9 is now reduced from 25% to 22.5% of tender value limit. At Grade 2 it has been reduced to 20%. Reduced Annual Turnover: Annual turnover is set at 50% of tender value limit for Grades 3 and above. CELEBRATION: The Witsieshoek Primary School players and coaches celebrate after winning the 2013 Nestle Milo u.13 Tournament in the Free State.

Witsieshoek gets trophy

} Tladi Moloi THE Witsieshoek Primary School is the champion of the 2013 Nestle Milo u.13 Tournament in the Free State and they will represent the province in the national championships in September. The national championships are set to take place on 6 and 7 September in the North West Province. The school in Phuthaditjhaba in Qwaqwa was bestowed with the championship trophy after they had defeated the Ntsoanatsatsi Primary School by 2-0 in the final that took place in the Phuthaditjhaba Stadium on Saturday. Lisa Mofokeng and Masopha Ramaputsoe scored the two goals for the champions. The team received gold medals and pocketed R10 000 for their stunning performance. Witsieshoek and Ntsoanatsatsi advanced to the final stage of the tournament after they had finished top in their respective streams. There were three teams in each stream.

In their stream, Witsieshoek beat Luckhoof Primary by 2-0 and played to a goalless draw against Meqheleng Primary while the runner-up finished tops after they played 2-2 against Kurtberg Primary before beating Monamodi Primary by 2-0. Victor Mokoena, the Witsieshoek head coach, said it was the first time they had won any silver ware. He said the boys played as per instruction and that earned them something at the end of the day. “Last year I started to assemble the team and winning the competition showed that we were still on the right track,” he said. Mokoena said they would achieve more should the boys remain as calm as they were. “There was potential in the team, and believe me, there is a bright future,” he said. He said they would make sure that they prepared the team for the national championships because the date was not far away. “We just have to prepare the boys mentally so that they know what is

expected from them when we get there,” he said. Molefi Rapuleng, the losing coach, said the defeat was a bitter pill to swallow. He said they expected to win the tournament as they knew what was expected of them. “We have played in this tournament for a long time. We have managed to win the provincial finals in 2010 and 2011. However, the boys played well and we should go back and rectify our mistakes so that we could challenge them in the coming competitions,” he said. Bongane Chabalala, the Nestle Milo provincial coordinator, said he was happy with the support. He said the players gave their all to claim the championships, but in the end the best-coached team had won. “I am happy that the host won the competition, because in most cases the hosts become the hot favourites. Witsieshoek did not disappoint their supporters today and you saw what happened when the referee blew the final whistle,” he said.
