111 – still going strong } Jabulani Dlamini
AT the age of 111, Mantele Msimanga has very few people on the planet who are older than her. According to her battered Identity Document, Msimanga of Bolata Village in Qwaqwa turned 111 on 16 July. “Do you see how old I am my child? You probably think you are seeing a ghost, don’t you? She asks in a smooth, but strong voice.
Although she is now blind, Msimanga still has a fairly sharp memory and is thus able to recall her children’s as well as some of her grandchildren’s names. Several generations who can trace their lineage back to Msimanga held a party over the weekend to celebrate the old woman’s birthday. “I think my grandmother has lived this long because of her healthy fear of God,” Mpuse Mofokeng said.
Mofokeng’s mother, Matshidiso Mofokeng, who recently went blind herself until a recent eye operation to remove a cataract restored sight to her one eye, stays with and looks after the old lady. She said despite her mother’s very advanced age, she actually rarely ever became ill. “You would think I have to take her to the doctor regularly, but actually not, she is very strong,” Matshidiso said.
Matshidiso said her mother had a healthy appetite for sweets with Liquorice Allsorts being a particular favourite, as she scratched around the wardrobe and pulled out a handful of the soft sweets and handed them to her mother. Asked how many grand- and great-grandchildren she had, Msimanga gave a hearty laugh and just shook her head amid a chorus of laughter from her family who had surrounded her to sing her Happy
Birthday. Last week, the Sowetan newspaper reported the story of Johanna Mazibuko of Klerksdorp who at 119 had a claim to be South Africa’s oldest person. SADD receives cheque for R60 000 ON Friday the country’s leading total beverage company honoured its commitment to South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD) and presented them with a cheque for R60 000. As part of its award-winning Drive Dry Campaign, brandhouse committed to providing funds to the responsible drinking company should it reach a target of 3 000 online declarations made by the end of June. Earlier this month, brandhouse announced it had reached the target and would honour its commitment. The target was met thanks to the many South Africans who declared to drink responsibly via the Drive Dry social media platforms. The website (www.drivedry.co.za) links to actual Facebook events and offers consumers two
options – to declare to either “drink and not drive” or “drive and not drink”. “brandhouse continues to promote responsible drinking and encourage all consumers to take responsibility for their own actions, which ultimately affects the lives of others too,” said Sibani Mngadi, external affairs manager at brandhouse, at the handover. The aim of Drive Dry is to change behaviour amongst consumers with regard to driving under the influence of alcohol. “We support civil society initiatives that have the same objective of curbing alcohol misuse. Top of the list is South Africans Against Drunk Driving, who happen to have the same passion as Drive Dry in reducing alcohol-related carnage on our roads,” he said. Mngadi presented Caro Smit, founder and owner of
SADD, with the cheque at brandhouse’s head office in Observatory, Cape Town. Smit started the SADD in 2005 after her 23-year-old son had been killed by a drunk driver. “On behalf of the SADD I would like to thank brandhouse for the cheque as well as the continued support over the years. “We are a non-profit organisation that educates South Africans about the dangers of drinking and driving. “We work together with partners such as brandhouse to save lives and bring down the death count,” says Smit. Both parties encourage South Africans under the influence of alcohol to make use of a designated driver or taxi services and public transport and incorporate responsible drinking as an active part of their social culture.

Committee to visit farms PARLIAMENT’S Portfolio Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is currently on a week-long oversight visit to various farming areas in the Free State to assess the progress made by government, and scrutinise the impact of the state interventions such as the mechanisation programme and broader infrastructure programme that support farming towards ensuring food security for all in South Africa. The oversight visit, which forms part of the committee’s mandate to ensure food security, got underway on Monday and will run until Friday across all districts of the Free State. The visit will among other things, afford members an opportunity to interact with beneficiaries and determine whether the programme is making a positive difference in the people’s lives,

Forestry and Fisheries over lack of proper monitoring and accountability of the mechanisation programme and insufficient additional support to farming communities on the utilisation and maintenance of state-donated farming equipment. The committee is scheduled to visit the Boiteko Fishery and Thusanang Ostrich Project in Petrusburg as well as the Gotswametsing Fishery and Qala Botjha Ostrich Project in Koffiefontein today. Tomorrow the delegation will be in the Eastern Free State in Bethlehem, Reitz, Vrede, Warden, Diyatalawa and Kholokoeng. School holds unique festival } Sidwell Guduka THE City of Roses is expected to come alive with the annual FNB Grey College Music Festival to be held later next month. This year’s event, which will take place on 30 and 31 August at the Sand du Plessis theatre, promises to be a highlight on the Bloemfontein social and cultural calendar. The festival which was conceived by Dr Michau Heyns, ex-headmaster of Grey College in 1982, is unique and the only event of its kind in South Africa. It was formally known as the Grey College Choir Festival and used to take place at the Centenery hall in the Free State capital. Later, it was moved to the Bloemfontein town hall to accommodate the growing number of audience. The Grey boys will be joined on the stage by legendary singer and songwriter Jak de Priester, the beautiful and talented Caroline Haasbroek and the exquisite voice of Valiant Swart. “We are thrilled with the artist line-up we were able to secure this year and rehearsals are going very well. “We always use artists from all over the country. At the end of the show we always have the whole school on the stage; all the boys from the school sing as the mass orchestra,” Celeste Venter, the organiser of the event, told Express. “And the artists sing together with them on the stage. That’s a very nice thing to see and the boys enjoy that. “People can expect to be blown away. There will also be a few

During the break we will give them something to eat and drink. “We have organised transport to take them to the venue and back home,” Venter said. Malema vs ANC } Selloane Khalane EXPELLED from the ruling party in 2012, political analysts say the former ANC Youth League president, Julius Malema, is the ANC’s biggest opponent going into the 2014 national elections. Analysts say Malema’s newlyformed political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), is highly likely to secure enough votes to get a foot in parliament. The 2014 ballot is expected to feature a number of new political parties, including Dr Mamphela Ramphele’s Agang SA, SA First, a party of former members of the African National Congress (ANC) military wing, uMkhonto we Sizwe, and the EFF. The political analyst Hussain Solomon said the ANC was likely to win the elections by a 58% to 60% margin. The ANC has held a majority of the seats in the National Assembly since 1994, being re-elected with increasing majorities in 1999 and 2004, but had a slight fall in

its majority from 69% to 65,9% in 2009. “The party will lose votes to the EFF,” Solomon said. The political analyst André Duvenhage said it was highly unlikely that the ANC Free State would win the elections by an 82% margin, considering divisions in the province. During the party’s provincial conference the ANC Free State chairperson, premier Ace Magashule, promised the party’s national leadership an 82% victory in the elections. In 2009 the Free State clinched 71% of the votes, a drastic fall from 81% in 2004. “Forces of change in the Free State have defected to the EFF and that decreases votes for the ANC,” Duvenhage said. The political analyst Theo Neethling said Agang and the DA would compete against each other to secure votes from the middle class. “Whether Agang will have its structures in place prior to the elections is questionable,” Neeth-
ling said. “Agang does not have a charismatic leader like Malema who can connect with the ordinary people on the grass roots,” Solomon added. The ANC’s biggest opposition party, the DA, received 11,6% of the votes in 2009, up from 8,4% in 2004 in the Free State. Analysts expect Cope to lose votes following the party’s infighting over leadership positions. The Freedom Front Plus votes declined from 2,47% in 2004 to 2% in 2009 in the province. With criminal charges still looming over Malema, Solomon said it was not sure whether Malema would make it to the voting polls. “One has to wait and see if Malema will get prosecuted before the elections,” Solomon said. “There will be many more Waterkloof and Nkandla scandals before people stop voting for the ANC, but 2019 is a different scenario,” Solomon concluded.

Carling Black Label Cup win first for Chiefs } Sidwell Guduka “IT is often said that derbies are dull affairs, but this was definitely not a dull affair,” Stuart Baxter, Kaizer Chiefs coach, told journalists in a post-match press conference on Saturday. This was after Amakhosi had defeated their old foes Orlando Pirates 1-0 in the Carling Black Label Cup encounter at the FNB Stadium. “This was a tight affair. And I must admit that Pirates gave us a run for our money. In the first half, they were all over us and we kept on making some poor decisions with the ball. Pirates took advantage of that. They had a few chances to score, but were unlucky. Our
defenders were brilliant and they defended our box very well. So that’s why it was a tight game,” Baxter said. “The second half for us was both heaven and hell. We were defending the box very, very strongly. We knew Pirates would come on the longer the game went and we had some very good transitions, but we gave up some very good chances,” he added. The win of Saturday was the first for Kaizer Chiefs in the Carling Black Label Cup. Pirates won the previous two editions of the competition by penalties. “Pirates put us under a lot of pressure and I’m just happy to get away with a win. It is nice to give the Chiefs fans the
long-awaited Carling Black Label Cup because Pirates had dominated,” an elated Baxter said. Now Chiefs will shift their focus to the Absa Premiership League which kicks off on Friday. The Glamour Boys will begin their campaign with a tricky match against Mpumalanga Black Aces at the Mbombela Stadium on Friday. ‘We won’t increase the stipend’ } Selloane Khalane DR GWEN RAMOKGOPA, South Africa’s deputy minister of Health, says South African students studying medicine in Cuba are known for spending their student’s stipend on living a lavish life. “Our South African medical students are known for their opulence and wearing expensive brands in Cuba,” Ramokgopa said. Ramokgopa was addressing prospective medical students shortlisted for the RSA-Cuba Medical Students Training Programme on Sunday at Bophelo House, Bloemfontein. Earlier this year six of the 187 South African medical students who had embarked on a hunger strike were recalled by the minis-
ter of Health, Aaron Motsoaledi, after refusing to continue with their studies unless their stipends were increased. Students demanded a $500 increase to the $200 (approximately R1 600) monthly stipend they receive, bringing it up to $700 (approximately R5 600). The students were amongst 187 students who had gone on a hunger strike over stipend increases and amongst other grievances. “Government doesn’t have that kind of money,” Ramokgopa said. She said the R2 000 stipend given to students every month was only to cover personal items such as toiletries. Ramokgopa said the stipend was more than the salaries earned by professors and
other educators in Cuba. “South Africans are spoiled,” she said. With a serious shortage of doctors in the country, the eight higher education institutions in South Africa did not have enough space to enrol prospective medical students. She said it would take 20 years to get the 20 000 doctors needed in the country if other prospective medical students don’t study in Cuba. Ramokgopa said students also complained about the Cuban food and overcrowded lodging. “We won’t increase the stipend,” she said. The South African government spends about R500 000 per student over six years for a language course, medical training and living expenses in Cuba.

PAULOS MASEHE was the big winner last night at the Free State Stars 2013 Gala Awards Ceremony which was held at the Loft Guest House in Bethlehem. The veteran skipper scooped three awards on the night. He won the titles of Most Consistent Player, Player’s Player of the Season and Player of the Year. He also went home R130 000 richer. Masehe said winning three awards was a big achievement for him and added that he had achieved that through hard work. He said it was an indication that when one worked hard, a reward would come at the end. “It is a big achievement for me and winning three awards means a lot. I have been doing what I love most and
