Police say get an ID } Teboho Setena

THE public sector departments in the Goldfields encouraged parents to apply for birth certificates and identity documents for their children. This was what officials said while addressing the farming community of Adamson Vlei last Monday. The importance of having these documents was highlighted at the launch of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children at the Adamson Vlei School. The event was a collaboration between the Virginia police and the Departments of Social Welfare, Home Affairs and Correctional Services. Many farming community members from Adamson Vlei applied for ID and birth certificates for children, increasing the possibility to apply for social grants. Thabong police spokesperson Mamello Mokhuoane said they were gravely concerned about families who do not have these essential documents, saying that the problem posed serious challenges for the police. These challenges include positive identification of crime suspects in the investigation of cases. “The Virginia police encounter many social problems when carrying out arrests. People cannot be identified if they do not have identity documents or birth certificates,” said Mokhuoane. She said the urgent need to ensure people had these documents prompted the departments in question to embark on a joint operation during the 16 Days of Activism campaign. Mokhuoane said another serious concern was the number of child-headed households with no income. The problem of children without birth certificates and ID’s was common. The challenge was that children in child-headed households with no income were exposed to crime and abuse.

Bongani Hospital in an ambulance with multiple severe injuries to his face. A report compiled by the doctor who examined Mashele found that he was stabbed on his face with a bottle. He had stitches to his eyes, lower lip and forehead. At the time of the alleged attack, Mashele was in the company of two young girls, his daughter and a friend of his daughter. The constable has since left to live in another place in Welkom. An eye-witness told Express Goldfields that the constable came to fetch his property the next morning (17 November) being escorted by police officers who were apparently driving four state vehicles. Express Goldfields was taken from pillar to post in its quest to get a response from the Free State police’s communications department. Responding to questions posed to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, acting spokesperson Grace Langa said: “I wish to state that in terms of the IPID Act, we are mandated to investigate amongst other cases rape by a police officer where the police officer was on or off duty. Secondly, we investigate any complaint of torture or assault against a police officer in the execution of his or her duties. Allegations of assault by a police officer while the officer is off duty is not mentioned in the act as one of the cases to be investigated, which means it is outside our mandate.”

THE wheels of justice turn slowly for brutally assaulted victim Andries Mashele. He was allegedly assaulted by a police constable on 16 November at the Rea Hola residential area in Welkom. The police constable, whose identity is known to Express Goldfields, is still reporting for duty at the Thabong Police Station. He has not been arrested and taken in for questioning while Mashele is nursing scars on his face after the assault. Mashele opened an assault case at the Jan Hofmeyr Road Police Station. Two weeks have gone by with Mashele waiting in vain for the investigating officer to attend to his case. Left wondering, he only got a notification on 17 November sent to his cell phone which reads: “Constable MA Weper will investigate your case”. The reasons that led to the constable brutally attacking Mashele are not known. Mashele is a self-employed electronic technician, repairing radios and televisions at one of the available rooms at the residential complex of Rea Hola. The complex was formerly a mine hostel. Mashele was found in the work room lying in a pool of blood on the ill-fated night of his attack, allegedly by the constable who was off duty. The police officer is well-known to most residents having previously lived in one of the apartments in another block. Mashele was rushed to the

The ‘back door’ scam tricks another woman

ANOTHER woman in Welkom has been ripped off hard-earned cash by syndicates operating in the Goldfields. Police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng said a 22-year-old woman from Thabong lost more than R2 000 to an unknown man in an illegal deal commonly known as back door. He said the woman was trigged to purchase clothing via this deal after she agreed with the man. Thakang said the man promised to sell the woman clothing she intended to purchase at half the price the woman would pay when buying them legally from the shop. The man spotted the woman drawing cash from an ATM in the mall, then approached her with the idea of selling her clothing through the illegal back door process. The process is that of stealing goods. Thakeng said the woman was convinced after the man phoned

someone in her presence about the deal, telling the person what the client (woman) wanted. The unknown man informed the woman that all she wanted cost R400 at half price, but then asked the woman to give him R1 600, part of which he would apparently pay the person the unknown man had called regarding the deal. The woman was made to believe the person the man phoned worked at the sports shop in the mall. Thakeng said the man disappeared from the upmarket mall after he had received the money from the woman. “Residents are sternly warned not to give their money to people they do not know and not to buy back door commodities,” said Thakeng. Earlier this month a 75-yearold woman from Thabong was also ripped off about R100 000 by a syndicate, who trigged her into withdrawing cash she had invested at a bank.

Matjhabeng hosts growth summit THE Matjhabeng Local Municipality will host its Local Economic Growth Summit to do introspection into prospects to create a strategy for the development of sustainable economy. The two-day summit to be held in Welkom is set to start today, ending tomorrow. The Matjhabeng Municipality is the biggest local municipality in the Free State and is primarily dependent on mining and agricultural activities. Being vulnerable to external and macroeconomic risk factors, both sectors have experienced a sharp decline for the past decade, resulting in noticeable job losses. Stakeholders will explore a strategy for the municipality aimed at reviving the economy to create employment. The summit is an initiative of the Matjhabeng Directorate Local Economic Development which consists of three divisions. Each directorate has its own mandate to promote entrepreneurship and economic growth. The Matjhabeng’s mayoral committee member Lennox Rubulana said stakeholders from both the public and private sector had been invited. Businesspeople who wish to attend are welcome, but pre-registration is a requirement. Rubulana said: “All three directorates have compiled a number of programmes to promote local entrepreneurs and stimulate the growth of a diversified economy. The agriculture division has ongoing educational and awareness programmes for smallscale farmers, e.g. the Livestock Identification Awareness.” He said the effort saw programmes carried out during August in partnership with the SAPS, SPCA and Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. He added that the division for Trade and Investment and SMME Development hosted a Public Works programme focusing on, among others, occupational health and safety, painting, first aid, personal finance

Business seminars held for the SMME sector were a resounding success. “The purpose of these seminars was aimed to improving and providing capacity to SMMEs to ensure job creation, among others,” he said. Stakeholders included the Goldfields Chamber of Business, Goldfields Casino, Seda, Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited, Absa, DETEA and LDA. “Realising the challenge of local contractors in terms of compliance regarding CIDB grading, CIDB Free State was approached to conduct the workshop session for Matjhabeng local contractors. On top of all these incentives and empowerment training, an additional 30 SMMEs graduated on NQF Level 4 in Business Management Level,” said Rubulana. Speak up, fight violence – SAPS THE SAPS in Virginia launched their 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children recently. The police teamed up with the community and various public sector departments. These departments include Social Development, Home Affairs and Correctional Services. The launch of the campaign was

held at the Adamson Vlei farm on the outskirts of Virginia. About 100 farming community members living in this area were reached. The Thabong SAPS spokesperson, Mamello Mokhuoane, said the purpose of the launch on the farm is to continue to address the community about the negative effect crime generally has on the community.

The idea to target the farming community was initiated by the Virginia SAPS Social Crime Prevention and the community policing forum, led by the station commander, Col. Cynthia Molale. “The presentations focused on the core functions of each department and how accessible the departments are to the farming community,” she said. Ensuring the community un-

derstood the core responsibilities of the participating departments, Mokhuoane said inhabitants were given an opportunity to interact with the different departments’ representatives. They were also encouraged to ask questions. She said the community was encouraged to speak up and to fight the prevalence of crimes such as rape

Change your habits MORE and more health-care practitioners are signing up for the iChange4Health Brief Behavioural Change Counselling (BBCC) programme. It aims to tackle lifestyle diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension and cancer, which accounts for 40% of all deaths in the country. The initiative enables doctors to be more effective in changing risk behaviours of chronic lifestyle diseases improving self-management among patients with existing chronic conditions. The programme has been hailed by South Africa’s medical elite as an important intervention in patient care. Dr John Akinbohun of the Department of Family Medicine in the Lejweleputswa District in Welkom has pledged to train other medical professionals in the Free State on how to more effectively motivate and support patients in making healthier choices concerning their lifestyles, through the BBCC programme. Training is accompanied by a resource package which serves as an additional support for patients who want to reduce their risk profile, through the adoption of healthier lifestyle habits. The resource package was researched and developed by the Chronic Disease Initiative for Africa (CDIA) with the support from the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) and was launched countrywide by prevention-minded

and the abuse of alcohol. She said these were identified as potential factors leading to domestic violence. Mokhuoane said the programme, in which gender violence was highlighted, would be an ongoing campaign during 16 Days of Activism. The campaign lasts from 25 November to 10 December.

Coach determined to win

BLOEMFONTEIN CELTIC’s coach Ernst Middendorp’s first emphatic 3-2 win over Orlando Pirates has come as a big relief. Celtic outclassed Bucs in their backyard, Orlando Stadium, last Saturday. The win has certainly inspired the Mangaung giants ahead of today’s tough league match against the struggling Lamontville Golden Arrows at the Botshabelo Stadium. The match is set to kick off at 18:00. The win over Pirates was Phunya Selesele’s second of the season and the first for Middendorp since he took the reins from his predecessor, Clinton Larsen. Celtic’s first win of the current Premiership term was 3-2 against the rookies Polokwane City in August. The morale-boosting win gives Middendorp the hope to achieve a top eight finish at the end of the season – a mandate which he had signed for when Celtic’s management appointed him head coach. The German-born coach has played four matches without a win before last Saturday’s win over Bucs. A top eight finish at the end of the season will be a complete change for Middendorp, a fate he had failed to achieve with his former team, Maritzburg United. He’s last illustrious spell was with Kaizer Chiefs winning few trophies with the top-seeded side. A win over the visiting Durban-based side Arrows will propel Celtic to a more creditable position on the log table. Middendorp’s lads are currently occupying position eight following a win against Pirates. Celtic are boasting 13 points after 11 league matches played thus far. To tighten the defence will be key for Middendorp to ensure his team remain intact in the challenge for winning this year’s Absa Premiership title or finishing within the top five.

UPBEAT: Bloemfontein Celtic’s coach Ernst Middendorp determined to secure a second win. Photo: Sidwell Guduka “But at Celtic I believe in the infrastructure, the potential and the direction of where the club can go with the support that the club are well known for. I’m fully convinced about my step. I want more than just to sit in the relegation zone. I’m 100 % sure we’ll come out of where we are at the moment.”

Celtic are still unbeaten since the German took over from Larsen. Middendorp has seen his new team collect seven points from four draws and one win. Middendorp believes his stay at Celtic marks the beginning of big things to come. He is striving to make a bigger impact than at the former team and want to ensure Celtic remain at the helm of the domestic league. It is a change from his previous spell at Maritzburg, a club which has yet to finish in the top eight where ambitions are more modest. “I am convinced I made the right step,” he said after the Free State outfit had put together a dazzling performance to outplay Orlando Pirates Saturday night. “I had a good relationship in Maritzburg, but as coaches we have to make decisions for ourselves. I was able to make a decision, because my contract said I could leave at any time,” Middendorp explained. “Integrity was my best friend in the move. I felt a little pity for the players at Maritzburg and it was not easy to leave,” he said. Middendorp left KwaZulu-Natal in a huff after Celtic’s management had dangled him a carrot which he could not resist. In a turn of events his predecessor, Larsen, decided to replace the German as head coach of Maritzburg after he had apparently decided to quit as coach of Phunya Selesele following the team’s temporary slump in form. The poor run saw Celtic eliminated from the Telkom Cup which won last year when they narrowly beat Mamelodi Sundowns in the final. Ironically, Celtic were knocked out of the competition by Sundowns – the same team they beat in last year’s final played in Durban. Pirates and Platinum Stars will compete for this year’s trophy.

POWER STRUGGLE within trouble-ridden Athletics South Africa (ASA) rank is far from over. It has taken another turn with incumbent President James Evans declaring last Saturday’s annual general meeting (AGM) where the federation’s entire board was dissolved as unconstitutional and invalid. Neither Evans nor his bitter rival and vice-president, Hendrick Ramaala, were in attendance as they were appearing in a Johannesburg High Court to uphold Thursday’s decision to suspend five members of the provincial boards. Last Saturday’s attempt is the second in just a month following the first when the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) dissolved the embattled leadership in July this year.

DOUBLE-AMPUTEE MATTHEW “BUSHY” MCKELVEY

Bushy aims at world record DOUBLE-AMPUTEE MATTHEW “BUSHY” MCKELVEY is determined to break a record when racing today at Phakisa Freeway in Odendaalrus to have his name in the Guinness World Records. He began with an ambitious venture to set up a new 24-hour world record on a motorcycle yesterday when he raced at the world-class course. He hopes to complete his quest on a high note today. The attempt is a good gesture from the double-amputee to raise funds for a lady that requires a prosthetic leg. The woman has been struggling over the years. McKelvey, well-known as Bushy, lost his first leg in a hit-and-run accident in 1999 when hit by a speeding taxi. He was dealt a double blow in 2008 when he lost his other leg when a drunk driver catapulted him for more than 150 meters down the motorway. This is McKelvey’s second attempt to break the 3 249,9 km in 24 hours, the record set by an American L Russel “Rusty” Vaugh at the Continental Tire Test Track, Uvalde, Texas, America, on 9 and 10 August

2011. In his first attempt on 28 March this year, at 03:30, Bushy had already covered 2 267 km and was left with only 1 100 km to set a new record. His main challenge was an inadequate set of new tyres and tyrechanging machine which was not available. He used six sets of new tyres from Welkom, Odendaalsrus and Klerksdorp and lost six hours on stoppages between 08:00 on 27 March and 03:30 on 28 March. “Had I not had all these stoppages, I could have slashed that record by miles, but anyway, I’m coming back this year with a backing of a sponsor for technical issues.” To enable Bushy to have an appropriate environment for his attempt to the world record, the Free State Tourism Authority (FSTA) has sponsored the Phakisa Freeway race track for his exclusive use during this period. The FSTA plans to attract more racing events at the facility by attracting large scale media publicity for versatile driver McKelvey.

FIRED: Steve Komphela has been axed by Free State Stars and he will be hunting for a new team.

IN: Themba Sithole will take over the reigns at Free State Stars after Steve Komphela was booted out of the team camp.

} Tladi Moloi

Komphela has been with Stars since 2010, joining the club from Platinum Stars. Rantsi Mokoena, the team’s general manager, has confirmed that they had parted ways with Komphela and added that Sithole would be the team caretaker coach until they announced the new coach. He said they amicably parted ways with the coach on Sunday after their meeting. “We felt that we needed to try something new as the results were not coming forth. The team did not play well, everyone witnessed that. “Komphela is an experienced coach and he knew what would happen when the results were not coming. “We had a meeting with the coach on

Komphela red-carded

FREE STATE STARS have fired their long-serving head coach, Steve Komphela. The former Bafana Bafana captain and assistant coach was shown the door after Ea Lla Koto lost 2-0 to the Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday. Komphela’s future with Stars has been in doubt following the team’s dismal form. His contract was not extended at the start of the current season. Komphela was left with a year to his contract and his sacking sees Themba Sithole, who was the assistant coach to Komphela, take over the reigns while management look for a head coach replace-

ment. Komphela’s troubles began after the club was eliminated from two major cups – the MTN 8 Cup and Telkom. The illustrious mentor was given an ultimatum to win at least one cup of the three majors in the Premiership. But he failed to deliver – raising the pressure for the Stars management to sack him. The defeat by Chiefs was the last throw of the dice for Komphela to turn around Stars’ fortunes and get them back on their winning ways. Stars were knocked out of the Telkom Cup by Chiefs last month. Bethlehem-based Stars are sitting 11th on the log with 12 points from 11 matches, after 3 wins, 3 draws and 5 losses.

So near, yet so far for Dinonyana } Teboho Setena SO near, yet so far for Thabong’s football young lads Dinonyana FC following their elimination from this year’s edition of the Nedbank Cup Tournament. They were among the four tough second division teams that were competing for a spot in the last-32 leg of the competition. They were contesting against the strong contenders Super Eagles, Hunters FC and Bloemfontein Young Tigers to qualify for the last-32 leg. The four teams campaigning in the South African Football Association (Safa) second division met last Saturday at Loubser Park in Kroonstad to determine the Free State second-tier division side to compete against a third division team for a berth in this year’s Nedbank Cup last-32 leg.

Dinonyana were hopeful of good fortunes at the preliminary knockout. However, the Welkom outfit gave away the chance to compete for a berth in the last-32 of the spectacular tournament when they narrowly lost 1-0 to Hunters from Bloemfontein in the first semi-final. Tigers fought hard to beat Eagles 2-1 in the second semi-final to set up a group final against their Mangaung-based counterparts Hunters. However, Tigers showed pedigree beating Hunters 1-0. This was Dinonyana’s second loss in the preliminary final having last year also suffered a setback at this stage of the cup championship provincially. The Thabong side was last year knocked out by Maluti FET who made history by becoming the first Free State second division side to qualify for the Nedbank Cup last-32 leg.

Dinonyana’s elimination crushed their dream to emulate Maluti, who, following their stunning run in the cup championship, went all the way to gain promotion to the National First Division (NFD). Following their knockout from the lucrative cup the Welkom Minnows will now shift their focus on challenging to claim the Safa second division provincial championship. Dinonyana are among the 17 clubs in the Free State which are currently vying to win the provincial league to make it to this year’s national Safa promotional play-offs. This is the Thabong outfit’s third season campaigning in the second-tier league. Tigers’ hardfought win means they will face off against a yet-to-be-known third division outfit to decide this year’s provincial winner that will qualify for the last-32 leg.

Sunday and after long negotiations we agreed on the terms,” he said. Mokoena said they did not deserve to be where they were on the Absa Premier log table with the players they had brought into the team. “We have good players, but our position on the league does not reflect that,” he said. Sithole’s first test comes as early as today when he will be leading the struggling and wounded Stars in a league clash against the University of Pretoria at the Tuks Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 19:00. After today’s game Stars will be left with one game against Moroka Swallows before the Christmas break.

Bronze for Celtic } Teboho Setena UNCHALLENGED in the Free State Sasol Women’s League, Bloemfontein Celtic’s women’s side secured a bronze medal at this year’s national championship played at the weekend in Klerksdorp in the North-West Province. This was the Mangaung women’s football team’s first silverware since their participation in the championship. Celtic defeated Cape Town Roses 2-0 to claim the Sasol League National Championship bronze medal. This was an improvement for the provincial championship after they failed to reach the quarter-final and semi-final of last year’s edition played in KwaZuluNatal. They finished in fourth position overall last year. Celtic hammered Durban Ladies 3-1 in the quarter-final to book a semi-final spot against Ma-Indies to whom they lost 2-1. The Celtic women are yet to reward their dominance provincially by winning the gold or silver medal of the women’s football championship.
