Long wait finally over Residents can finally look forward to fourroom houses } Teboho Setena THE long wait is over for scores of residents in Welkom to have their two-room apartments replaced with four-room houses as per the Free State government’s plan to provide decent houses. A multi-million rand housing project to see off the outdated apartment system is in full swing in Thabong with more than 100 deserving people to benefit. The project saw more than 30 houses (two-room apartments) demolished last Tuesday as the Free State Department of Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlement pushed ahead with the plan of bettering the lives of the people. The project kicked off last year in Bloemfontein with the rebuilding of 51 houses (four rooms). It then proceeded to Bluegumbosch in Qwaqwa, costing R33 million. According to the department, the two-roomed houses being phased out have deprived the people of the dignity that owning a home should afford a family – privacy, comfort and sense of pride and belonging. The project comes to the Goldfields town of Welkom after years of waiting. Scores of residents told Express Goldfields & NFS that they had lost hope of seeing it happen. Zakaria Ramanamane, unemployed and one of the beneficiaries, is delighted that this is finally happening.“I’m happy to get a four-room house. It’s far better than the two-room apartment which had no privacy at all. We used to be cramped in a small house with my wife and children with absolutely no privacy for ourselves. It was difficult to have visitors,” said Ramanamane. He said he had been living in a two-room house with his family for over two decades. The four-room houses will be 50 m² in size with a combined toilet and bathroom, and will have a ceiling. Etsho Project Management has been awarded the tender for the construction project. Lionel Bruwer, project manager, said they were optimistic to deliver the project within the time frame.

Meanwhile, department spokesperson Senne Bogatsu said the department had allocated a budget worth R4 083 942,32 for completion of the RDP housing project in Winburg under a new contractor. She said the previous contractor had been allocated 100 houses of which 36 were incomplete. “The current contractor has 40 new units and is rectifying 36 units which were not completed by the previous contractor. For the second project, the initial allocation of 106 houses saw 4 units left incomplete and these were re-allocated to another contractor together with 14 new units.” Bogatsu said the department identified the problem of incomplete houses in Winburg in 2011. The houses were for the 2009-’10 financial term, shortly after the 2009 general election.

Voters can apply for special votes on these dates APPLICATIONS for special votes in this year’s national and provincial elections opened on Monday and will continue until Thursday, 17 April, between 09:00 and 17:00 at local IEC offices. Special votes will be cast on Monday, 5 May, and Tuesday, 6 May. There are two categories of special votes: 1. Home visits: Election officials will visit voters who have successfully applied for a home visit due to physical infirmity,
disability or pregnancy. These home visits will be conducted on Monday, 5 May, and on Tuesday, 6 May. 2. Special voting at your registered voting station: Any voter who will be absent from the voting district where they are registered on Election Day may cast their vote early. It will take place at the voting station where the voter is registered on Monday, 5 May, and Tuesday, 6 May, between 09:00 and 17:00.
Applications for both categories must be made by completing a VEC 1 form (available on www.elections.org.za or at local offices of the IEC) and must be submitted by hand to the local IEC office in the municipality responsible for the voting district where the special vote is to be cast. The forms will not be accepted at national or provincial offices and cannot be faxed, emailed or posted.
Special-vote applicants may use a proxy to deliver the VEC 1 form to the local IEC office in the municipality where they intend to vote, but the form itself must be signed by the voters themselves. Unlike previous national and provincial elections, applications for special votes will no longer be accepted at voting stations on special voting days. Only voters who have pre-approved applications submitted during the window period of 7 to
17 April will be able to cast a special vote. Having submitted the VEC 1 application form, voters will be informed of the outcome of their application via SMS or email. They can also check their status on the website (www.elections.org.za). Win a Basotho experience } Christo van Staden AT the turn of the century in 1800, the plains around Golden Gate teemed with game. In 1836 it was noted by Major Sir William Cornwallis Harris, well-known English military engineer, artist and hunter, that it sometimes seemed as if the whole landscape was one moving mass of antelope which included thousands of blesbok, zebra and black wildebeest. Five arrested after murder } Teboho Setena THE police in Thabong have made a breakthrough in the gruesome murder of Malefetsane Mbena (26), arresting five suspects within two days after the murder that has sent shockwaves throughout the community of Thabong. The killing is related to gangsters’ activities which have residents living in fear. The suspects, who briefly appeared before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday, are Edwin Teboho Molobethu (24), Moeketsi “Wonder” Mohuli (24), Mathata Andries Radebe (27), Bongi Mangxala (25) and Lebohang Joseph Mothibedi (27). They are due for a second appearance on Friday facing murder charges. The police spokesperson Malebo Khosana says the suspects were arrested last Monday following in-depth investigation by the Thabong police’s detective and cluster tactical response
The second annual Free State enterPRIZE Job Creation Challenge was launched on 18 March 2014 at the Windmill Casino and Entertainment Centre in Bloemfontein. This exciting competition is aimed at job creation through the development of small and medium enterprises in the Free State. Donate books for campaign THE Free State Department of Education has launched an initiative to collect books in line with the campaign to encourage learners to read. To support the drive the MEC for Education, Tate Makgoe, calls on the community, businesses, churches and government officials to donate books which will be distributed to all schools. This initiative forms part of the departmental reading strategy which seeks to involve all stakeholders in promoting reading as a societal responsibility. “Books not only enlighten the mind, but also enable learners and community members to make informed decisions based on what they have read rather than being told by other people,” said Makgoe. The book collection drive also coincides with World Book Day on 23 April. The department is appealing to all learners and members of the community to read for 30 minutes between 10:00 and 10:30 on the day. Books donated can be dropped off at the Free State Department of Education offices and all Volksblad and Express offices throughout the province.

THE Thabong Police Station has received top accolades at this year’s SAPS National Excellence Awards, recognising good performance. The award was given for best station in the country at the annual event held at Monument Park in Pretoria a week ago. The Thabong Police Station was chosen as the overall winner out of the three finalists, the Haterspruit SAPS (KwaZulu-Natal) and the Uitenhage SAPS (Eastern Cape). The criteria used to evaluate the nominees were performance chart, front-line service delivery, corporate image, tidiness, client satisfaction (survey), partnership and the effectiveness of the community policing forum. The Thabong SAPS commander, Brig. Cois Muller, believes the recognition was well-deserved. “It is through the hard work, commitment and dedication we display in performing our duties. “It is the hard work of members who worked as a team, not me alone. “It is one thing to achieve this award from our provincial office three times in a row, but to achieve it at national level is the best of them all,” said Muller. THE Griffons rugby team will try to salvage their pride in the two remaining fixtures with their chance for the semi-final play-offs an impossible dream to achieve. Their two games are against the Vodacom Blue Bulls in the North-West Stadium in Welkom this Saturday with the very last fixture against the Valke on 26 April in Kempton Park. The Goldfields lads’ 35-15 defeat by the second-placed Leopards last Friday in Welkom was the last straw that broke the camel’s back. The game was a must-win for the Griffons to possibly give them a glimmer of hope to be in the mix of the four teams that are vying for a spot in the play-offs. The defeat, the fourth in succession, meant it is game over for Oersond Gorgonzola’s charges – leaving them to scramble for left-overs in the prestigious tournament. With their fate decided in the competition, they are now looking to salvage some pride by getting positive results against the Bulls and the Valke. The Welkom boys’
sole win in the tournament was 62-10 over the Limpopo Blue Bulls in the opening fixture of the competition played last month. The Griffons are still rooted second from the bottom of the log on seven points. Their conserted effort in salvaging some pride by beating the Vodacom Blue Bulls Saturday and the Valke next weekend could see them claim the sixth or fifth spot on the table – pending the results in other matches that feature the Golden Lions against the Limpopo Blue Bulls and the Griquas against the Valke. Positive results for the Griffons in their next matches will help revive the players’ spirit and self-belief after these elements were dampened following their losing streak. Saturday’s outing against the Bulls is scheduled to kick off at 17:30. It will again test the Griffons’ technical team’s ability of Eric Herbert, assistant coach, and head coach, Gorgonzola, in plotting the major upset. A win will propel the local boys to leap-frog over the sixth-placed Valke with whom they are tied on seven points.

Nominations received before the 20th of every month will be included in that month’s selection. Nominations received after the 20th of every month will be carried over to the next month’s selection. Nominations must include your name, age and a short paragraph (200 words or less) on what you have achieved, as well as your contact details.
