Little girl laid to rest Murder suspect to reappear in court for bail application } Teboho Setena SCORES of shocked mourners joined the grief-stricken family of Karabo Nale to bid a sad farewell to the murdered three-year-old daughter of Nomathemba Janki. The little girl was laid to rest last week Friday in Kutlwanong, Odendaalsrus. Mourners that attended the funeral service never stopped expressing shock and disbelief about the news of the senseless killing of the child. Reeling from the gruesome killing, the victim’s mother, Nomathemba Janki, and family members remained seated motionless at the graveyard – trying to come to terms with continuing their life without their beloved daughter. The mother’s last encounter with her child was on 4 July when she left her in the care of the woman suspected of killing little Karabo. The arrest of the suspect, Nompucuko Mavis Mahamo (23), provides some relief for the distressed mother and the family of the murdered victim. She briefly appeared in the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court last week Thursday facing a charge of murder. Mahamo is set to reappear in court on 22 July for a bail application. Little Karabo’s brutal murder has sent shockwaves through the Free State and beyond due to the nature of her killing. A post-mortem report released by the police revealed that the little girl had been stabbed 99 times all over her body. The victim’s (whose name Karabo means answer) mother and family members hope to get an answer to the circumstances that had led to the killing during the murder trial. Molebogeng Lechesa, the Welkom police spokesperson, said the motive for the killing was unknown. She said Karabo’s body had been discovered in the open veld between the K9 and Block 2 residential settlement on 6 July by a shepherd who had alerted the police. She said the victim’s face had been covered with a jersey and a packet of Nik Naks snacks and sweets were found next to the deceased on the crime scene. Lechesa said Karabo’s mother had left the deceased together with her 13-year-old sister in the care of Mahamo, who had been busted last Monday in K1 Location in Kutlwanong. She said the police had seized an okapi knife with dry blood stains, two used white candles and clothes with blood stains found in Mahamo’s possession. The child’s murder has further raised fears regarding the safety of children.

Stadiums not ready } Teboho Setena DESPITE the fact that sports grounds in the Matjhabeng Local Municipality are not up to standard, Sebenzile Ngangelizwe, the mayor, is “happy” with their progress. He expressed his satisfaction with the work that had been done at the handingover ceremony of the Zuka Baloyi Stadium. Ngangelizwe gave the community the green light to use the facility a week ago. He said more work needed to be done to revamp the stadium to acceptable standards, and pointed out the possibility to increase the size of the pavilion. The municipality forked out no less than R3 million for the upgrading of the Zuka Baloyi and Bronville Stadium. Ngangelizwe said R3,5 million had been allocated to revamp the Zuka Baloyi Stadium. As for the design of the parking lot at this facility, situated in the heart of Thabong, Ngangelizwe said: “The parking lot is too small to allow for the flow of traffic entering and going out. “I think in the next phase we should complete the outstanding work necessary to bring these sports facilities in the township to a satisfactory level.”

These facilities were part of those that had been closed last November to allow for renovations. The work included the installation of irrigation systems, repairing of fencing, construction of parking and upgrading of dressing and ablution rooms. The renovation at the Bronville Stadium is still in progress. The contractors were expected to finish in May. The condition of the field leaves much to be desired at both the Zuka Baloyi and Bronville Stadium. The marks on the surface of the field (pitch), where furrows were dug to install an irrigation system, are visible at the Zuka Baloyi Stadium in Thabong. Asked if he could justify the expenditure of the work that had been done at the Zuka Baloyi Stadium, Ngangelizwe said: “To be frank, the R3 million allocated was used optimally. We’ll take it step by step to revamp these facilities.” He said 15% of the budget from national government would be set aside to upgrade sports facilities. Local lower division football clubs, including rugby teams, will have to wait even longer before they can use these grounds. Since October last year they have travelled more than 50 km to use sports fields at the mines for competitions while other clubs use sports fields at schools.

Grave tampering a concern } Teboho Setena TAMPERING with graves by unknown criminal elements at the Virginia Cemetery is a grave concern for undertakers in the town. One of the leading undertakers, Estate Home Funeral, has fallen victim to this. The undertaker is one of eight in the Goldfields region including Virginia, Welkom and Theunissen. Raphael Malefane, manager of the funeral home, said on the weekend of 5 July they had been forced to contend with grave-tampering. Numerous graves had been tampered with on the day of the burial. “We found numbered identity boards bearing the details of people we had rendered a service to that had been removed from the graves. “The worrying factor is that only identity boards at graves of our clients were removed. “We found some thrown inside open graves which had been reserved for burial services,” said Malefane.

“I find it strange that only the graves of our clients have been tampered with. “It is obvious there has been foul play.” He said the incident had been reported to the police in Virginia. Malefane said the major cause for concern on their side and that of the relatives and families of the deceased was that they were unable to positively identify the individual graves since the identity boards had been removed. “This is cause for concern for us as service provider and a great inconvenience for the community at large because no one is able to identify the graves of their loved ones. “It is an expensive process, because relatives and families are bound to seek assistance from the municipal authorities to make certain the grave they visit is that of the deceased,” he said. Malefane appealed to those relatives and families having difficulty in identifying graves to consult their office for further assistance for the purpose of identifying the graves.

Calls for Malakoane’s axing intensify THE Democratic Alliance (DA) has publicly announced its full support to the call by various entities for the sacking of the beleaguered MEC for Health, Dr Benny Malakoane. The opposition party’s statement comes in the wake of an ongoing protest action by volunteers and health-care workers to have Malakoane fired from the influential position of MEC for Health. The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) has been seen spear-heading the mission to have Malakoane replaced. “We welcome the recent support from the Treatment Action Campaign, the South African Medical Association and the ANC-affiliated Nehawu, who are all calling for MEC Malakoane to be fired,” said Mariette Pittaway, the DA’s member of the provincial legislature, during the budget votes debate in the Free State Provincial Legislature last week Wednesday. Three weeks ago, disgruntled Free State community health-care workers forced their way into Bophelo House. People who had not received stipends for more than two months staged a sit-in inside the building. They were demonstrating after submitting a memorandum to Dr David Motau, the head of the department. Pittaway said they had been calling on Premier Elias “Ace” Magashule to fire MEC Malakoane for more than a year. “The premier must now act. When I say the condition of health in the Free State is critical, I can prove it. I daily receive telephone calls from doctors, nurses, administration personnel and even porters working in the Free State hospitals. “The new state-of-the-art Mantsopa Hospital complex in Ladybrand was proudly handed over and a media release was made that it would open its doors to the public in January 2013. “It is now 19 months later and the doors are still locked. Cleaners wash the floors every day praying that the doors will

open, while the occupational therapists guard their equipment. Salaries are paid out and the public is locked out. “The backyard has turned into a rubbish dump. Is this because of outdated boilers or 1954 equipment or maybe because of apartheid? No, this is because of mismanagement, corruption and a failure of political accountability,” said Pittaway. “MEC Malakoane, do you know about the critical conditions in our hospitals? “Do you know that people are dying because of the failure in your department?” Pittaway highlighted the following problems: ) Babies suffering from malnutrition cannot be helped – no special milk is available. ) Nasal prongs used for babies are not in supply – these cost about R2,50 each, but cannot be ordered. ) No basic antibiotics are available – sick children are just sent back home. ) No saturation monitors (for the measuring of oxygen levels of babies) are in working condition. ) Certain HIV patients who have kidney problems need special ARVs (D410 – Stavudine) – hospitals and clinics do not have this – these patients are shown away. ) There are certain packs for certain injuries (i.e. head, stomach) – when casualties come in, these packs are not available. It has happened that these patients have then died. ) Buthelezi Ambulance Services – gets paid per minute. Their equipment does not work and in one incident they were called to collect a nine-hour-old baby to transfer to another hospital – they arrived without an incubator and had to go back to fetch an incubator. In another incident they were called at 04:00 to transfer a critical patient – they only arrived at 09:00 – the patient died.

Drug dealers denied bail THE three suspects busted for drug manufacturing and dealing in Phomolong, Hennenman, remain in custody after their bail application was turned down. The trio include two Nigerian males, Benjamin Orama, Okoya Ogku, and a South African woman, Nobengozi Mpewvana. The state turned down their bail application on their second appearance in the Hennenman Magistrate’s Court last Monday. Capt. Stephen Thakeng, Welkom police spokesperson, said the trio’s bail application was turned down because they are deemed a flight risk. He said the suspected drug dealers’ personal details, such as residence, were yet to be verified.

Mayor gets his hands dirty THE Fezile Dabi District Municipality will tomorrow embark on a cleaning campaign in Koppies to mark Mandela Day. The participants, who will include the mayor, Moeketsi Moshodi, will clean the grounds of the Dibaseholo Primary School in Koppies and taxi ranks in Parys. The mayor will also hand over equipment to the early childhood development centre. The Fezile Dabi District Municipality has just completed the project of revamping Kruis Street – about R8,7 million was spent on this. Moshodi challenges the members of the public and institutions to participate in activities aimed at cleaning the environment and the grounds of important institutions, including schools. Many other events will be held on Friday, 18 July, which coincides with former president Nelson Mandela’s birthday. This year the world will for the first time mark Mandela’s life without the icon who passed away last year in December. He died aged 95. .

The police have since seized a white Toyota Avanza belonging to the three suspects. The trio first appeared in court on 30 June after the police had caught them red-handed inside a shack, allegedly busy manufacturing drugs. Mpewvana, Orama and Ogku are facing charges of manufacturing and possession of drugs. Their bust in Phomolong at about 04:00 on 28 June was due to a tip-off by a community member who alerted the police about a suspicious bad smell coming from a shack in which the police discovered a drug laboratory. Thakeng said they found possible ingredients to manufacture drugs, as well as drugs with an unknown street value, in the drug laboratory.

Campaign gives rape victims hope

} Motlalepule Mokgosi ANNARI DU PLESSIS believes training at organisations on how to treat victims of rape could go a long way against the scourge of rape and to empower survivors. Du Plessis spoke at the presentation of certificates to candidates that had successfully completed a training course on the counselling of rape survivors. The programme also focused on changing the lives of the victims, both men and women, and on child abuse. The ceremony was held at the AFM Deo Doxa Church in Welkom a week ago. Representatives of organisations received basic training over four days. Du Plessis is the founder and coordinator of Cross Roads, Go Purple (an awareness campaign against rape and violence) a human rights activist from Vanderbijlpark. She said successful candidates had been accredited to serve as Melitas (people who assist with rape cases) in their respective areas. “The Melita and Go Purple campaigns are more focused on giving the victims hope, healing and victory. It also offers support to those who do not want to disclose the ordeal they went through. It could be self-destructing and lead to fatalities,” said Du Plessis. She said training equipped the Melitas to mediate and assist the victims until the perpetrators had been convicted. “Even if it means going to court with

the victim for moral support,” she said. Du Plessis said the major challenge they faced was that the victims gave up. “We make a point of standing by them until the last day.” Du Plessis said the Melitas would partner with the police to reduce rape incidents and to bring perpetrators to book. Go Purple launched an awareness campaign last Friday that will run until the end of September. During this period the public is encouraged to wear items that are purple in support of the campaign themed Celebrating Life after Abuse. “The colour purple in winter symbolises the coldness after the rape incident; meaning the emotions and hardships the victims and survivors have gone through. “In September it shows how victorious life is even if you have been in pain,” said Du Plessis. Events will also be staged to support the drive. “Last year we had supporters on the treadmill for 36 hours on a freezingly cold night in Vanderbijlpark. Most of the participants were survivors of sexual violence. “They were there to make a point by running from midnight on Friday until noon on Sunday,” said Du Plessis. ) Victims are encouraged to contact the helpline for emergencies or for more information to get help with reporting rape cases. Plan early for your retirement DECIDING how to invest your retirement fund money is about making one of the biggest financial decisions of your life. Karin Muller, head of Sanlam’s Growth Market Solutions, says the latest research from the Sanlam Benchmark Survey showed that a third of South Africans did not make use of professional financial advice, but relied on their own knowledge, that of a colleague, their human resources department or their employer. “A staggering 88% of people who are financially better off in their retirement received professional financial advice.” This shows how critical it is to ensure that you obtain advice from a professional. “People don’t understand that retirement planning should start on day one of their employment or the date of joining their retirement fund. “The decisions people make while they are employed, will ultimately determine how comfortably they are able to live

during retirement. “Unfortunately, most retirement fund members only start considering retirement when they get closer to retirement.” The latest Sanlam Benchmark Survey shows that people who retire comfortably have the following in common: ) They started saving for retirement a few years earlier than the average person. ) They saved more each month. ) They preserved their savings when they changed jobs. ) They reinvested their lump sums to bolster their retirement income. ) They had additional sources of savings, such as other retirement annuities. Muller says it is worrying that just 29% of South Africans are able to maintain their standard of living in retirement. What is more, people who retire now, experience longer retirements, but have less money to live on and many are looking after dependants in their retirement.

Cherish your language THE ministers of religion, public speakers and politicians have a tendency to make their simple tasks of communication difficult. They do this by using English as language instead of sticking to the language they know and understand – their home language. Language policies required transformation in the new dispensation within the context of multilingualism. The official languages before 1994 were Afrikaans and English. Like all other facets of our culture, the then minister of arts, culture, science and technology, the late Dr Ben Ngubane, established a language task team in 1995 tasked with new language planning and policy formulation in the post-apartheid South Africa. This led to the Language Policy Plan and the National Language Policy Framework. Its main task was the introduction of a policy to practise multilingualism in all spheres of government and the private sector. An inclusive language approach enables people to hear, to be heard and to effectively participate in every sphere of society, be it education, media or politics. In the mining houses, the industry introduced Fanagalo, which was used for communication among thousands of mine workers from all over Africa. This language was influenced by many languages and was easily understood. Those who were not proficient in either English or Afrikaans communicated well with the rest in mining houses in Fanagalo. Fanagalo is a pidgin (simplified language) based primarily on Zulu, with English and a small Afrikaans input. It is used as a lingua franca, mainly in the gold, diamond, coal and copper mining industries in South Africa and to a lesser

My view Moeti Molelekoa Social observer extent in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. All five my children attended school where they spoke English. But they were all taught that at home they remained within their culture and spoke Sotho. In certain families children were barred from playing with their peers to keep them from being influenced by indigenous languages. Today, in parliament and in the courts, one is allowed to use one’s own language freely because it is an official language. Therefore, I call on our priests, politicians and motivational speakers to stick to languages they have mastered. There is a perception that the youth is leaving church in droves for charismatic churches were services are conducted in English. Most of the preachers in these churches are from East and West Africa. This has put pressure on local ministers to use English despite not being proficient in the language. The African Renaissance for the potential growth of Africa must begin with the development of African languages. ) Express Goldfields & NFS welcomes members of the public interested in contributing to the weekly column as public observers or citizen journalists. Donate blood and help the SANBS THE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has been hard at work ensuring that a blood shortage is avoided. However, with all efforts in place, it seems the cold weather is keeping donors away. Traditionally the winter is a difficult time due to schools and universities being closed for the holiday, as well as increases in illnesses such as the flu. This has had a great impact on blood collection. This places the SANBS under immense pressure to collect safe and good quality blood products. “The SANBS needs to maintain a blood stock level of five days at all times by collecting 3 000 units of blood per day to meet the demand of the thousands of patients who are reliant on blood transfusions for their survival. However, at the moment we have only a very limited blood stock available on a national level,” said Vanessa Raju, communications manager of the SANBS. “It is only with the help of the

selfless blood donors that we’ll be able to ensure that patients who are reliant on blood transfusions will be able to receive it,” she said. The SANBS is appealing to people, particularly to regular donors, to not miss out on their next donation date and to other members of the public who meet the minimum requirements to become a blood donor, to help boost supplies by committing to donating blood. People interested in donating blood should: ) be between 16 and 65; ) weigh 50 kg or more; ) be in good health; and ) lead a sexually safe lifestyle. Those interested in donating blood can do that at The Strip, Shop 34, Stateway, Welkom. The times to visit the premises are: ) Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays – 09:00 – 16:45 ) Tuesdays: 09:00 – 18:00 ) Thursday: 10:00 – 16:45 ) Saturdays: 09:00 – 13:00 ) Public holidays: Closed.

Ready for action

BASKETBALL is set to return to the stage in the Lejweleputswa district. This follows a concerted effort by local teams towards reviving the sport in this region of the Free State. A one-day basketball tournament was staged a week ago at the Thotagauta Secondary School in Thabong. Played on a round robin basis, the competition saw four clubs compete against one another. The teams were from Ventersburg, Virginia and Welkom, every time knocking the dust off to get the game

back on track again. The participating clubs were Third Force from Virginia, Rim Rockers from Ventersburg as well as Young Blood and the Lakers, both from Welkom. The majority of the teams consisted of senior men. Sipho Mpotle, administrator and coach, said the one-day event paved the way for the formation of provincial leagues for both sexes, adding that they would enrol all teams to the mother body, Basketball South Africa (BSA). Mpotle said plans were in place to organise league games exclusively for girls

Griffons looking for another win THE Down Touch Griffons look to record a second successive win in the Absa Currie Cup qualifier fixture against the lacklustre Valke on Friday at the NorthWest Stadium in Welkom. In a bottom-of-the-log match played last week, the Griffons beat the BorderBulldogs 41-15 at the Buffalo City Stadium. The win was their second in the competition. With a win over the visitors the locals

could consolidate their position on the table and possibly leap-frog South West Districts, who are in third position with 15 points. The Griffons boast 13 points in the bag from five fixtures played, equally as all their opponents. In Friday’s fixture they will have to show their mettle to overcome their opponents. However, underestimating the visitors

will be just as detrimental for the Griffons. The GWK Griquas have bolstered their place in the top spot on the points table of the Currie Cup qualifiers. They did so two weeks ago when after beating the Griffons 43-24 in Welkom. The Northern Cape side boasts 23 points, followed in the second place by Leopards with 22 points.

Dispute delays play-off } Tladi Moloi A DISPUTE involving the Free State Development Academy and FK FC has led to the postponement of the Free State Third Division promotional play-offs. The play-offs are now set for the weekend of 25 to 27 July in Welkom where the five teams representing the five regions will compete for promotion to the Second Division League. The play-offs were set to be held this past weekend at the Beatrix Mine Sports Ground near Theunissen. However, it was called off due to the matter involving FK and Academy (a development side of the Premier League team Free State Stars). The two teams campaign in the Thabo Mofutsanyana SAB Regional League of the South African Football Association (Safa). Moremi Klip, the Safa provincial coordinator, says the case involving these two amateur clubs is being dealt with by Safa’s national disciplinary committee. “The other regions have already confirmed their winners. We are now waiting for Thabo Mofutsanyana. The matter of the two clubs has been referred to the arbitrator to make a ruling,” he says. The winners of the other four regions are Days (Lejweleputswa), Lazio (Mangaung Metro), Roots United (Xhariep) and Avalon (Fezile Dabi). The Safa disciplinary committee and the appeal board ruled in favour of Academy at hearings held last month. Taking the case to arbitration proves to be the last resort by the aggrieved FK to find justice. The bitter dispute apparently regards a transgression of the rule by FK to not field the required number of u.21 players in a league fixture against the Ladybrand-based Manyatseng United Brothers. It is alleged that FK were in contradiction of the rule. However, neither Academy nor FK would shoot straight to the provincial play-offs since one of them still have to play against Dla2 FC, the winner of the A stream, to determine the overall winner of the Thabo Mofutsanyana region. The overall winner of the Thabo Mofutsanyana region will proceed to the rescheduled Free State Third Division promotional play-offs. Academy and FK finished the season in first and second place. Academy finished in the B stream on 39 points after 18 games and FK have 38 points from the same number of games as their rivals. FK are hoping for a favourable boardroom decision that will see them leap over Academy – they will claim the top spot should judgement favour them.

Team cleared

UPBEAT: Samuel “Ace” Mpakane, coach of Sibanye Golden Stars. Photos: Teboho Setena

} Teboho Setena THE Sibanye Golden Stars have been cleared of any wrong-doing regarding the improper registration of two players – giving them the green light to compete at the national promotional play-offs. The South African Football Association’s (Safa) national disciplinary committee and appeals board found the Goldfields team not guilty on the charge of alleged improper registration of two players, Joseph Molete and Thabiso Ntseki. The charge of misconduct to field improperly registered players came after the Bloemfontein-based side Bubchu United had lodged a complaint with the association, alleging Ntseki and Molete had been improperly registered. The two players featured in Stars’ return leg league match against Bubchu. Klip Moremi, Safa competitions coordinator for the Free State, said the case against Stars had been dismissed by the association’s national disciplinary committee and the appeals board on the basis that Bubchu had not followed the grievance procedure to the letter. He said the aggrieved club had failed to lodge a protest during their league fixture against Stars, and had waited until the league competition had finished to lodge their complaint. The dispute was dismissed at the first hearing on 28 June by the association’s disciplinary committee. Bubchu was granted leave to appeal and the team did so. However, the appeals board dismissed the case with costs at the hearing on 3 July. Stars were found not guilty of being in contravention of the Safa uniform rules and regulations, in particular rule 24.2.6 and 24.2.10 to field illegitimate players. If found guilty, the club would have been charged for bringing the game, Safa and its sponsors into disrepute. Safa would also have docked Stars points as part of the punishment. Stars registered Ntseki and Molete from their local rivals Welkom Stars during the registration period from January ending February during which teams were allowed to register players. However, their former team Welkom United allegedly decided to withhold the two players’ identity cards against their will to deny them a chance to join rivals Stars. It emerged that the two players were given clearance by one of Welkom United’s officials with signatory powers and that Stars informed Safa that the players’ identity cards were being withheld by Welkom United. The dismissal means Bubchu will have to pay the costs of the appeals hearing, including the travel expenses of Stars.

WIRED: Sibanye Golden Stars twin strikers Tsita Mokhakoane and Vuyo Ntakakase, who are instrumental in their team’s success provincially, will spearhead their team at the promotional play-offs. The outcome of the dispute has dealt Bubchu a double blow. Not only were they beaten by Stars in the boardroom, but also on the field in contention for the Free State second division title. The Bloemfontein-based team was among the four clubs that were favoured to win the provincial championships. The contestants included Super Eagles from Bethlehem and Bloemfontein Young Tigers and Stars who pulled all the stops in the hotly contested league championship. The final log updated nationally by Safa showed that Bubchu finished the season in third position on 52 points and Stars in first position with 59 points. Bethlehem-based team Eagles came in second on 53 points while Young Tigers settled for fourth spot with 43 points. Under the leadership of the coach Samuel “Ace” Mpakane Stars are now gearing up for the national promotional play-offs to be staged in Durban from 21 to 27 July. The Free State champions will be among the

nine teams from the nine provinces that will be vying for promotion to the professional National First Division League at the promotional play-offs in Durban. Only two clubs will be promoted and Mpakane hopes his team succeeds. If promoted, Stars will be the only team from the Goldfields to campaign in the professional league when the new 2014-’15 season commences in August. “Despite the dispute disturbing our programme, we are going to fight tooth and nail to ensure we gain promotion. We want to achieve the dream of having a professional team in the Goldfields region that will change the lives of the youth in the region. We don’t have a professional team here in the region and with us promoted it’s going to make a difference to promote football. We are relying on the support of the locals in our mission,” said Mpakane. His confidence has been boosted by the fact that he has an injury-free team to compete at the promotional play-offs.
