Rumours intensify
FREE
Speculation about the future of The Rock FM rife } Teboho Setena THE Welkom-based community radio station The Rock FM might be forced to stop broadcasting due to alleged severe financial and managerial problems. The station is reported to owe the state-owned broadcasting signal distributor Sentech over R15 000, and the management have been unable to raise money to pay to the service provider, which is rumoured to have threatened to switch off the signal to the station. The community station is housed at a one- time top restaurant, a facility belonging to the Matjhabeng Local Municipality. This year is the second year on the airwaves with a good listenership among the blacks locally within the Goldfields towns of Welkom, Virginia, Odendaalsrus, Hennenman, Ventersburg and Wesselsbron, as well as Allanridge. Insiders say the financial state of the station is worrying and has seen presenters working for months without being paid. Express Goldfields & NFS reliably learnt the station’s board members and the management is at loggerheads with the management, with Brian Selekoe, who also serves as the chairperson of the board, allegedly failing to account at meetings. The station management is headed by Kenny Moholobela, Sechaba Motopi, Azio Thathe, Ezekial Buti and Selekoe. Last month the station advertised the position of station manager held by Moholobela in an acting capacity. The decision by the board to advertise the position has further strained the relationship, insiders say. Clarity regarding the appointment of a new station manager and other persons in management and their role could not be obtained from Selekoe. He could not tell if the appointment of a new manager was likely or unlikely to happen in due course. Express’s efforts to get clarity from Selekoe were futile. “There are sensitive issues, I’m in a meeting and will get back to you,” Selekoe said. Eddy Kobuoe, secretary of the radio station, conceded there were problems needing urgent attention, adding that key figures that include Selekoe would be called to a meeting aimed at stabilising the affairs of the station. He added that the station’s trial time under mentoring of the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) was due to expire, with the board tasked to see through the future of the station, pointing out the financial state as a serious challenge.
Insiders say the station is enjoying revenue in advertising and they are surprised the coffers are empty and that the station could face sig nal switchoff.

Suspects on the run
THE police in the Goldfields are on the hunt for armed crime syndicates on the run that went on the rampage at separate places in Welkom. They are wanted regarding the killing of Elia Thibane on 8 August and the robbery of the business Fashion City at Manny’s where one person was left with severe injuries. Molebogeng Lechesa, Welkom police spokesperson, said Thibane was attacked and shot dead at the gate of his residence in Fiskaal Street in Lakeview in Welkom. The deceased was on his way to work when he was attacked and killed. “He was shot in the back and in the head and died at the scene. The deceased’s firearm also disappeared on the day of the incident,” she said. Lechesa said on 16 September at about 17:15 six unknown men
overpowered two workers and the manager of the Fashion City clothing shop at Manny’s, robbing the store of an undisclosed amount of cash. She said four of the six crime suspects had closed the entrance making it impossible for the shop staff and manager to move. “Both victims, aged 52 and 26, were stabbed with knives. The 26-year-old man was severely stabbed in the head and chest, sustaining severe injuries to his lungs,” said Lechesa. She said the victim was still in the intensive care unit at the Bongani Regional Hospital. Regarding Thibane’s murder contact investigative officer Sergeant Teswin Carls on 057-391-6238 during office hours or on 072-294-9306, regarding the business robbery contact WO Riaan de Lange on 057-391-6271 during office hours.

Programme now one year } Teboho Setena OVER 200 students currently enlisted for the Enrolled Nursing Programme at the Free State Nursing Colleges look set not to complete the two-year programme. This comes after the Free State Department of Health’s decision to reduce the duration of the programme to one-year training instead of two years as it has been over the years. The current group of students were enrolled early February this year. The decision to have students undergo just a one-year training programme comes in the wake of the financial troubles which have plunged the department in the doldrums. Express Goldfields & NFS reliably learnt that the decision by the department to reduce the programme to one year was also in line with a desperate turnaround strategy to rescue the department from the chaotic situation arising from major cash flow prob-
lems. It is unclear if the group will be allowed to complete the programme once the department recovers from funding problems which have crippled health services in the Free State. The decision to reduce the duration of the programme comes barely four months after the termination of service of over 3 500 volunteers across the Free State. The service termination of volunteers was marked by a series of protest actions that included sit-ins at the department’s provincial headquarters at Bophelo House in Bloemfontein. Angry volunteers expressed dismay with the management of the department to end their services after more than eight years of serving the community in providing different programmes. The department’s funding problems have since drawn sharp criticism with opposition parties blaming the MEC, Dr Benny Malakoane’s, poor administration and called for his resignation.
Three in court following murder THREE men accused of murder, David Thom (22), Alfred Kamati (24) and Monnapule Willemse (28), are set to re-appear in the Vierfontein Magistrate’s Court on 7 October. Kamati was granted R1 000 bail while Thom and Willemse had their bail applications turned down by the state on their appearance last month. The trio are facing a charge of allegedly murdering Niclass Fanki Modise on 5 August. They allegedly hijacked the deceased’s white Toyota Conquest vehicle. The deceased was a resident of Jouberton,
Klerksdorp, in the North-West. The suspects were busted late in August following an intensive investigation. Molebogeng Lechesa, spokesperson for the Welkom police, said the deceased’s body had been discovered in water near the Groenfontein farm. It was spotted by an employee of Water Affairs in Vierfontein, a coal-mining area between Viljoenskroon and Orkney in the North-West. She said the deceased had both his hands and feet tied up. “The deceased’s head and face were covered with a plastic bag and did not have any visible injuries,” said Lechesa.

Lenka a man of grand designs } Motlalepule Mokgosi LENKA DAMAZANE dreams of taking his fashion designings to another level – by establishing his own boutique and branding his designs. He is already established in his hometown of Welkom, tailoring and designing for scores of people. Although he designs mostly for women, quite a number of his clients are men. The young man persevered through many trials to make his mark. His aptitude emerged in 2004 while he was still at the Welkom High School, though he wasn’t enthusiastic about it. He tested his skills re-designing his own straight-cut jeans into bootleg jeans. He sewed extra cloth to the jean legs making it look like bootleg jeans and also added a zip and buttons. “I felt the pressure from friends who were fashionable and always wore trendy labels,” said Damazane. He belonged to a group of friends known as Logo which was in competition with Boys Hunting Bitches (BHB). These groups wore clothes with fashion labels. Both groups of boys attended the Welkom High School and the girls were crazy about dating them. “I never had a decent school uniform. My trousers were tight-fit and the T-shirts sported designer labels. I was always in trouble with my
principal for not wearing a neat uniform but he couldn’t change my ways,” he said. Competing with his peers wearing the best labels inspired Damazane to try his hand at fashion designing. Now he tailors and designs suits for himself. He largely specialises in designing some of the finest men’s apparel for matric farewells for boys in Welkom’s schools and also for politicians – notably Thami Nomazela of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality. Damazane quit high school due to medical reasons in 2004. He worked at a local restaurant to make a living. However, the wish to design was still there. It was not long until Damazane transferred his ambition into reality, when he joined an established male designer Magala Makhaola. “I was inspired by my acquaintance with Makhaola who owned a fashion design school in Bedelia, Welkom. I joined him to gain knowledge and seeing what he designed and made, stimulated my design ideas. “Makhaola taught me the basics of designing, from cutting paper, taking measurements and using sewing machines,” he said. Damazane works from his parents’ house in Bedelia. He turned one of the rooms into a personalised studio. Damazane further equipped
himself undergoing training in embroidery at the Motheo Further Education and Training College in Bloemfontein. He channelled his energy into designing with advice from his father, Limema Damazane. “I was involved in a car accident and didn’t inform my parents. My father discovered this through emails from the hospital and I then told them what had happened. He then advised me to claim from the Road Accidents Fund. I took part of the money to register myself for fashion designing at the Motheo FET College,” said Damazane. In 2007 he had an opportunity to display some of his creative designs at the Mangaung African Cultural Festival (Macufe) alongside well-known designer David Tlale. Damazane began his schooling at the Rheeder Park Primary School and then proceeded to the Welkom High School. “I encountered challenges in the fashion industry, but I never overlooked an opportunity to equip myself. Prayer is my secret to success. It relieves and helps me to overcome so many obstacles in my life, not forgetting the encouragement from my mother, Cynthia. She has given me all the support to accomplish my goals,” said Damazane.

Mob justice harsh and emotionally charged WHILE employed by the now defunct Tribune newspaper in the 1980’s, I was often accused of pre-meditated slander after exposing incidents through stories. The editor of the publication was the late Cameron Thulo (may his soul rest in peace) and he was quick to apologize to avoid a lengthy court battle and costs. In most cases, I later realised the complainants were never genuine with their charges. They were aware that the editor was clueless of what was happening in the newsroom. His title was editor cum publisher. Due to financial con-
My view Moeti Molelekoa Social observer straints and ignorance, every time there was a complaint, he would be apologetic and force me to apologise, regardless of whether I had a leg to stand on or not. In most cases, like the complainant, the editor also saw the stories for the first time after they had
been printed. Stories went to print raw as they were with typing, spelling and grammatical errors. He made me and other writers easy targets for mob justice. It is the harshness of mob justice in relation to the Oscar Pistorius case that reminded me of those stormy days. The brutality of the public verdict in the Oscar case is as a result of the “not guilty of murder” finding. All had their say: armchair-judges, official witnesses, lawyers, experts and the defendant. But after all it was up to Judge Thokozile Masipa and her two
assessors. Journalists jumped into the fray preaching like prophets – they know he grabbed his gun in a rage to kill his model girlfriend. They want the National Prosecuting Authority to appeal the culpable homicide decision. The overwhelming majority say they were convinced Oscar is guilty of pre-meditated murder of Reeva Steenkamp and not a lesser charge of culpable homicide. Only Oscar and Reeva were there on that ill-fated night. With Reeva departed, Oscar is the only eye-witness. Judge Masipa played trial by the
book, finding justice and not a lie or truth. Therefore she ignored Oscar’s lies and contradictions. The crime itself is a mystery; a mystery of an unresolved case. It will remain a subject of speculation in our discussions. ) To comment on the issue highlighted in the column, go to www.express-news.co.za. ) Express Goldfields & NFS welcomes anyone interested in contributing to the weekly column as public observers or citizen journalists. Hijackers get 15 years each THREE Lesotho nationals found guilty of car-hijacking have recently been sentenced to 15 years in jail each by the Odendaalsrus Regional Magistrate’s Court. They are Lebohang Mohanwe (25), Senawana Senawana (24) and Selialia Sesiwana (30) who was the driver. The hijackers approached the Odendaalsrus-based taxi owner under false pretence, hiring him to transport them to Bothaville. The trio, one armed with a firearm, hijacked the owner’s Quantum minibus on 23 August 2013 on the road to Bothaville. One of them pointed the vehicle owner with a pistol, then tied up the complainant and forced him to the back of the vehicle. They drove back to Welkom where they dumped him in the vicinity of the Lake View Dam. The vehicle was traced via a tracker in Virginia with the trio still driving it. They were arrested and remained in custody for the duration of the trial until their sentencing on 18 September.

The employees of the Lejweleputswa District Municipality channelled their energy towards the Heritage Day celebration. They sang songs of joy, danced and ululated. The Reitumetse Day-care Centre in Las Vegas, Thabong, an early childhood development centre, was a hive of activities where young and old performed for the crowd. Maria Mofokeng, the matron, spoke of traditional religion and
healing, entertaining the crowd with traditional dance and songs. “Our culture and tradition are so significant in defining ourselves and our origins. If you do not know where you come from, then you certainly will not know where you are heading. “Our traditions and cultures not only boil down to what we wear, but how different races live, grow up and what we do to survive. “Tradition and culture is our heritage and we should not lose sight of it. We are duty-bound to teach our children about the value of culture and tradition,” said Mofokeng.

Team aiming for the top } Teboho Setena BLOEMFONTEIN-BASED Louis Botha Technical High School’s boys’ team now look for a repeat of their 2011 success when they clinched the national Copa Coca-Cola u.15 Tournament. The school was crowned the 2014 Free State Coca-Cola champions. The tournament was staged under the auspices of the South African Schools Football Association (Sasfa). This followed their hardfought 2-1 victory over Retshedisitswe at the provincial final held at the Flavius Mareka FET College Sports Grounds in Sasolburg a week ago. Louis Botha and rivals Harmony High from Virginia are the only Free State schools to have tasted the joy to win this tournament nationally. Harmony’s win came in 2008 and Louis Botha’s in 2012.
The Louis Botha lads are fired up to pull another upset at this year’s national final to add another national cup to their cabinet. This year’s national is set to be held in Umlazi in KwaZulu-Natal from 17 to 19 October. Louis Botha have joined national contenders that include the Robinvale Secondary School (Western Cape), S.A. van Wyk High School (Northern Cape), Slindokuhle Secondary School (KwaZuluNatal), Sikhulile Secondary School (Eastern Cape), Clapham High School (Gauteng) and Thlavekisa Secondary School (Mpumalanga). Victorious Louis Botha reached the provincial final after beating Dr Reginald Cingo from Kroonstad and Khothalang from Bethlehem 2-0 and 5-0 respectively. It was so near, yet so far for the Retshedisitswe boys from the tiny town of
Villiers as they settled for a silver medal as this year’s runners-up in the Free State. Although they were not the favourites, they proved their capability by pulling a major upset by eliminating favourites Harmony 2-0 to set up a gruelling final against Louis Botha. The Retshedisitswe boys outclassed Luckhof 3-2 on their way to the provincial final. However, they gave away an opportunity to make history as they succumbed to a very organised Louis Botha team. Victory would have seen them represent the Free State nationally for the first time. The ultimate winning school of the 2014 Copa Coca-Cola nationally is set to take home R60 000 to be used towards the development of their school’s educational or sporting facilities. The second- and third-place winners will also receive R30 000 and R25 000 respectively.

FS schools go for glory } Teboho Setena TWO Free State secondary schools, Harmony and Tlokula, are braced for the tough battle for national glory in the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup Tournament. The two schools, from Virginia (Harmony) and Marquard (Tlokula) respectively, will represent the province in this year’s national championships in Pretoria from 5 to 9 October. This will be Tlokula’s first attempt to win nationally, with Harmony hoping for their fourth title. Harmony won in 2005, 2007 and 2011, with the current coach, Pitso Mokoena, hoping for the second cup in his tenure. The two Free State schools qualified for the national championship by virtue of finishing top provincially. Harmony are the FS champions and Tlokula the runner-up for 2014. Harmony narrowly beat Tlokula 1-0 in the provincial final staged in Bloemfontein in August.
Gilbert Matlokotsi scored the all-important goal to trump the gutsy opponents with whom they are expected to team-up in a quest to make the Free State proud. The winning school is guaranteed a trophy and cheque worth R1 million to spend on sport legacy programmes meant to advance the development of sport. If Tlokula Secondary’s exceptional performance during the provincial final is anything to go by, they could well finish in the top five of the 18 schools that will be competing for the national title. Harmony have pocketed R100 000 in prize money as the provincial champions. In the 2010 edition they finished in second place and third and fourth places respectively in 2012 and 2013, winning a total of R2,6 million. Harmony’s mettle as the Free State champions and one of the favourites nationally will be tested against competitive schools from the other eight provinces.

Vilakazi axed by Warriors } Tladi Moloi DAVID VILAKAZI has been fired by the National First Division (NFD) outfit African Warriors. The former Platinum Stars and Bloemfontein Young Tigers coach was fired after the Qwaqwa-based side lost 1-3 to Jomo Cosmos at the Charles Mopeli Stadium on Saturday. Vilakazi’s future has been in the balance following the club’s dismal start to the current season. Warriors are yet to register their first win. Two draws of 1-all against FC Cape Town and Santos earned the team the two points since the start of the league. Vilakazi joined the NFD outfit towards the end of the 2013-’14 season to replace Thami Ngubane who left for Thanda Royal Zulu. A source in the Warriors camp revealed that the club’s management had given Vilakazi, former Free State Stars stalwart, an ultimatum to win against Cosmos, failing which he would be sacked immediately. “The management was not happy with the team’s performance. They had a meeting on Tuesday before their game against Cosmos.
They showed him the team’s progress. He (Vilakazi) only managed to collect two points out of the possible 12,” a source said. “Vilakazi went to the Cosmos game knowing exactly that his future at the club was uncertain and that he would be fired if he didn’t get maximum points.” Except for the two draws against FC Cape Town and Santos, both at the Charles Mopeli Stadium, Warriors lost 1-3 to Milano United AFC, 2-3 to Royal Eagles, 0-1 to Golden Arrows FC and 1-3 to Jomo Cosmos. Tshepiso Senyane, Warriors’ communication officer, said on Monday that team management would issue a statement about the club’s future this week. Abram Nteo, former Bloemfontein Celtic midfielder, remains in charge of Warriors for their next league game with his first assignment against Garankuwa United. Meanwhile, Maluti FET FC, another Qwaqwa-based team campaigning the NFD, is also facing the trouble of relegation. Led by Morena Ramorebodi, the team is rockbottom with just a point in the bag behind Warriors, who are second from the bottom.
