Crisis rocks Rock FM

Differences over running of station’s affairs reach boiling point

} Teboho Setena AN ensuing crisis has rocked the local community radio station Rock FM with three board members having quit. Those that have resigned, are Eddie Kobuoe, secretary, and two additional members, Ntombi Ntsonta and Mokati Moledi. The trio resigned earlier this month as differences over the running of the affairs of the station reached boiling point. News about the trio’s resignation was kept under wraps amidst the station’s management ensuring the public that all was well in the station’s corridors. The resignations have further fuelled speculation that the station was plagued by factionalism and severe financial and managerial problems, allegedly arising from a poor management style. The station management is currently headed by Sechaba Motopi, Azio Thathe, Ezekial Buti, Kenny Moholobela and Brian Selekoe who holds a dual role as chairperson of the board. Kobuoe and Ntsonta cited the alleged management style which was based on friendship rather than principles as one of the reasons to tender their resignation from the trouble-ridden community station. Express Goldfields & NFS reliably learnt that the appointment of Moholobela to the influential position of station manager was a bone of contention among several serious issues crippling the station. The position of station manager was advertised late in August with the following requirements: matric certificate, diploma in Finance Administration or equivalent with relevant knowledge of corporate governance, financial management, human resource management, and regulations guided by the Public Finance Management Act, and Generally Accepted Accounting Practice, as well as managerial experience. It has come to light that Moholobela, who had been the acting station manager and was apparently endorsed to the position of station manager, does not even have a matric certificate. The advertisement stated that candidates would be appointed on a fixed 12-month contract with remuneration of R4 500 monthly. It is unclear if Moholobela has been offered the same. Repeated efforts by Express Goldfields & NFS to get comment from Selekoe, chairperson of the board and member of management, were futile. The station is reported to owe the state-owned broadcasting signal distributor Sentech over R15 000, and that the management had been struggling to feed the bill.

Forum aims to empower SMME’s } Teboho Setena & Motlalepule Mokgosi THE era of entrepreneurs in the Goldfields marginalised from playing a role in the economy of the region seems to be a thing of the past. This followed the formation of a body known as the United Small, Medium and Micro Enterprise Forum which, as the umbrella body of existing and emerging entrepreneurs, will serve as the voice for all affiliated SMME’s. Led by a team of nine persons the body was launched at an event held in the TS du Plessis Theatre in Welkom last Thursday. The committee members are Buti Mokeretla (chairperson), Mthunzi Tshabalala (deputy chairperson), Lele Thibatsana (secretary), Joyce Mkefa (assistant secretary), Jeanette Sebotsa (assistant treasurer) Isaac Tau (treasurer), Sechaba Matsau (coordinator),

Humphrey Dakuse and Majoro Mosebi (additional members). Mokeretla says the lack of support for entrepreneurs by both the public and private sector, including mine companies, prompted the establishment of the body, and that they hope to break the shackles that saw entrepreneurs not contributing towards the economic growth of the Goldfields and job creation. Mokeretla has blamed disunity among SMME’s in the region as yet another factor that contributed to them being marginalised over the years. “This saw entrepreneurs from outside the Goldfields taking full advantage,” says Mokeretla. The forum will advocate that SMME’s in the Goldfields be given a fair share of economic opportunities so as to empower themselves and create employ-

Information wanted THE Welkom police are on the hunt for the two armed robbery suspects shown in the identikits for allegedly robbing a 25-year-old man on 28 August. Const. Kethabile Mofokeng, spokesperson for the Welkom police, said the suspects, armed with a pistol, robbed the man shortly after he had withdrawn R2 660 near a shopping complex in Welkom in Buiten Street. She said after they had robbed the victim, the suspects fled on foot. The first suspect is about 1,65 m tall, of medium built, light in complexion, between the ages of 35 and 40 and his right eye had a black mark and was swollen at the time of the incident. The second suspect is about 1,9 m tall, of medium built, light in complexion, between the ages of 40 and 45, has a 10 cm scar on the left side of his face, his left eye appears to be blind, and both were talking Sesotho. Any person who can assist in the successful arrest of the suspects and their prosecution can contact the investigative officer, WO Riaan de Lange, on 057-3916271 during office hours.

ment opportunities. Mokeretla believes a united body will go a long way ensuring their recognition as active role-players in growing the economy of the Goldfields. The forum aims to among others mobilise support for both established and emerging SMME’s, market services they offer to both the private and public sector and strengthen entrepreneurs through empowerment programmes to better meet the requirements. Mokeretla says they plan to work handin-hand with the various stakeholders that include mine companies and municipalities. “Failure is no longer an option, we have to organise SMME business visionary, both new and existing. This can only be recognised when we are in collaboration with the government. However, we cannot

achieve economic growth without implementing broad-base economy policies as proposed by our government. “The key to economic development, which leads to poverty reduction, also lies in the development of SMME’s that are competitive, resilient and can continue to grow even when the market conditions are difficult,” says Mokeretla. Lennox Rubulana, head of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality’s Local Economic Development, has encouraged SMME’s to be more flexible, innovative and responsive to market demands, further urging owners to bring a fresh business model. “Gold is no more and it is time we embark on our secondary economy which is agriculture. We are also modifying the tenders statistic with 70% disseminated locally and 30% to foreigners,” he says.

THE estimated cost of repair and renovation of the half-burnt administration block of the Letsete Secondary School in Thabong, Welkom, will be between R70 000 and R80 000. The school’s administration block is not being utilised after it was damaged when unknown vandals threw petrol bombs through the windows on the night of 4 October. Howard Ndaba, spokesperson of the provincial Department of Education, said the incident did not cause major disruptions for the school management and learners’ preparation f or examinations which start this Friday. “However, some teachers’ portfolios were burnt, but fortunately the teachers managed to retrieve the marks from the learners to compile their marks list,” he said. He said further assessments of the extent of the damage to the building would be done. The cost will be for the ceiling, painting, replacement of broken windows and installation of new air-conditioning, tables and stationery cabinets among others. Teachers are utilising one of the classrooms in the interim. Ndaba said the community was duty bound to also help the department with safety and security measures in general at schools. “It is important to indicate that the school is the property of the community, as such we call on the community adjacent to the school to protect the school against vandalism and any form

of criminality,” he said. Ndaba encouraged the community to work together with the police in the Adopt a Cop Programme where schools are allocated a police officer to deal with the criminal activities. He said the programme’s random search of learners to seize dangerous items would be effective. “This is to ensure learners do not bring any illegal items to the school premises,” said Ndaba. WO Khosana Malebo, spokesperson of the Thabong Police Station, said two bottles containing flammable liquid had been discovered during the investigation of the incident, adding that they were investigating a case of arson. The police have not yet made any arrest.

Bail denied: Suspects linked to other crimes } Teboho Setena

Tip-offs a great help to police } Teboho Setena THE Welkom police have uncovered a get-rich-quick scheme operating from a house in Welkom, which apparently stores various goods to supply to illegal miners in the Goldfields. On-duty police members discovered the scheme following prompt response to a tip-off from residents. Estimated to be worth thousands of rands, the goods were seized on Friday, 17 October, after police searched a house in Naudéville, Welkom. Capt. Stephen Thakeng, spokesperson of the Welkom police, said the police members found all the rooms of the house stocked to capacity with large quantities of goods which include food, distilled liquor and non-alcoholic beverages. It is suspected that the house was a syndicates’ gateway store to supply people who are illegally mining gold at dysfunctional mines in the Goldfields region. Thakeng said goods were discovered when the house was searched, culminating in the arrest of a 39-year-old man.

Thakeng said the suspect would be charged with conspiracy to commit theft and dealing in gold. According to him the goods found in the house were: 319 bags of instant porridge; large quantities of 500 ml Coca-Cola drinks; 171 loose packets of instant porridge; a large quantity of buckets; 17 big boxes of Cremora cream packets; boxes of 50 ml brandy bottles including Klipdrift, Klipdrift Export and Richelieu; Amarula; nine rolls of plastic food wrap; three boxes of tape and telephone line. “These items are sold underground at inflated prices, thus these syndicates are making lots of money,” Thakeng said. ) In a separate incident quick reaction to a tip-off saw the police seizing more than 60 boxes of raw tobacco with an estimated value of R4 million stacked in a truck with two male occupants. The truck was stopped on the R73 road near the Bambanani Mine in Welkom. The police received a tip-off about a truck from the Eastern Cape transporting large quantities of raw tobacco to an unknown destination in Gauteng.

SIX would-be armed robbers remain behind bars after being denied bail on appearance in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court last Monday. The state turned down the bail applications because the men were allegedly linked to other violent crimes committed in Gauteng and Welkom. The suspects are Jackie Janson (42), Farouk Meyer (39), Gerdine Meyer (26), Romano Simons (26), Imran Bhaudia (43) and Pieter van der Berg (44). They were arrested earlier this month at about 18:00 after a foiled armed robbery at a shopping complex in Welkom. Five of the suspects were caught redhanded at the complex by a joint task force team, comprising members of the police of the Welkom Tactical Response Team, Thabong Cluster Task Team and Crime Prevention. The sixth suspect was arrested later following intensive investigation. The men face charges of attempted murder and robbery. Const. Kethabile Mofokeng, spokesperson of the Welkom police, said the suspects were allegedly linked to armed robberies in Komatipoort and Fairland in Gauteng and the assault of a police officer in Bronville, Welkom. She said five suspected robbers had been overpowered at the shopping complex in Welkom’s central business district after an exchange of fire with members of the police’s joint task force. She said in the process they had tried to flee the scene in a getaway vehicle which was cornered before it could go anywhere. Mofokeng said another getaway car which one of the suspected robbers had

fled in had later been found abandoned at Manny’s Shopping in Welkom. She said upon the arrest police members had found two firearms, a Taurus 9 mm pistol with four live rounds and a 7.65 pistol with eight rounds. Mofokeng said several cartridges had been found at the scene. She also added that no one had been injured during the shoot-out between the police and the five suspected armed robbers.

Sanco to take stock at meeting THE South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) in the Free State is expected to take stock at its provincial governance council meeting (Lekgotla) set to be held in Parys from 14 to 16 November. This will be under the theme Sanco the centre of influence in society. Bakoena Ramosie, Sanco’s provincial secretary, said they would focus on a number of issues, amongst others: re-positioning Sanco as the centre of influence in society, re-affirming its independence in the alliance with the ruling political party, the ANC, looking at the role of Sanco inside and outside the ANC-led alliance and looking at issues of social and economic transformation as well as issues of legislature governance and deepening democracy. “It is important for us as an organisation in this province to reassure the communities that we have not defected from our role as the watchdog and monitoring body of government services to our communities in ensuring their rights are adhered to by the government. “It is important to express that this civic

movement is not a political organisation, however, it does make political decisions from time to time. We will not deviate from this movement’s guiding motto as described by Sanco as people-centred and people-driven development. “Sanco in this province as part of national structure today wants to dispel the wrong notion in the public domain that Sanco is the ANC or an ANC civic movement, and that it is also for the ANC or is exclusively for the ANC-led members. Sanco is for every citizen in South Africa, provided they identify with the aims and objectives of the organisation,” said Ramosie. He said they also tackled the on-going trend of fruitless expenditure by local municipalities in the Free State following a damming report by the Auditor General on the financial state of municipalities. “The levels of fruitless expenditures are an indication of weak systems of internal controls, governance and leadership which are deliberately collapsed to achieve selfish desires of looting and milking the state dry,” said Ramosie. on his left cheek near his mouth and on the left side of his neck.

Qwenga jailed for revenge stabbing Murder-accused Owethu Qwenga (32) will spend 13 years in jail for the murder of Zanokhaya Skifi in March 2010. The Virginia Regional Court convicted the accused recently after finding him guilty regarding the fatal stabbing of Skifi, whose body was found between the Moeletsi and G Hostel blocks in Thabong, Welkom. Commonly known as Mancane, the accused stabbed the victim (then 21) in revenge over an argument which occurred elsewhere. Upon fatal stabbing the victim with a knife the accused handed himself over to the police officers who were called to the scene. The deceased sustained stab wounds

Two burglars jailed for 12 years Two burglars, Sello Simon Mohohlo (34) and Thabo Phillemon Moshobela (35), will spend 12 years in prison following their sentencing by Magistrate Bongani Ludidi after finding them guilty for burglary at a business in 2012. They were convicted and sentenced recently in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court. The burglars were caught red-handed inside the Welkom Meat Centre after the alarm went off and following the prompt response by the security company. They accessed the business through the roof on 14 March 2012 at about 01:39. State prosecutor Tseko Komane presided over the proceedings.

CHRISTIANS have a clever way of selectively using some biblical expressions only when it is convenient to them. Classic case – judge not, lest you be judged, Luke 6: 37. I have in the past been confronted by religious people using the above expression. Whenever I pointed out their ungodly behavioural patterns they appear intolerant of other Christians’ approach towards the same faith they follow. The collapse of the Nigerian church’s guest house and the subsequent death of over a hundred Christians who visited the Temitope Balogun, Joshua’s synagogue, have prompted a lot of criticism – 80 of the victims were South Africans. Joshua is one of the most generous pastors in Africa. He has offered over R20 million towards health, education and rehabilitation programmes. Kefuoe Molelekoa (35), a successful businessman from Stilfontein, North West, who often flies to Nigeria, has confessed that he goes there not to worship Joshua, but God who has blessed Joshua so that he could be a blessing to others. He has testified that Joshua boosts followers spiritually, materially, psychologically and physically. Religious intolerance is the major source of violence in the world. To reduce it, my suggestion is that the scholars have meetings to discuss the similarities and differences of religions. These meetings can be followed by gatherings between leaders from different religions. This exchange between spiritual experiences I think will help in understanding the value of other religions. Invitations can be made across the religious divides.

My view Moeti Molelekoa Social observer During conferences, you will find the same delegates from different regions every year; regionally, provincially and nationally. Why not break the monotony and invite guests from other denominations? The major cause of intolerance is the tendency of self-importance among some Christians. We need to accept other people’s faiths. To try and convert them is counterproductive and creates problems. For instance, there are a lot of Hindus and Muslims in our midst, but we do not know what their faiths are all about. What happened at the Nigerian synagogue disaster is what can happen anywhere where people are gathered. On 11 April 2001, 43 people who left their homes to watch a football match between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs lost their lives in a stampede at the Ellis Park Stadium in Gauteng. ) To comment or express your views about the issue highlighted in the column, go to www.express-news.co.za. Celebration showcases old, new } Teboho Setena THE history of the civilisation of man, from the ancient era to the modern, took centre stage during the Itekeng Luncheon Club’s heritage celebration. Held last Tuesday at the Roman Catholic Church in Maokeng, Kroonstad, the event showcased how the old generation lived in survival and also paved the way for the advancement of civilisation. The occasion is held annually to afford both men and women aged 60 years and older the chance to display creativity and celebrate life through participation in various cultural and traditional events and indigenous games. These include story-telling, dances known in Sesotho as mokgibo, mohobelo, indigenous games such as diketo, morabaraba, kgati (skipping rope), as well as ways of preparing food, grinding mealies, mabele and wheat. Many of the participants, mostly women, were taken down memory lane, recalling the days of the youthful era they termed the golden era on the basis of their life style. In attendance were club members from Kroonstad, Viljoenskroon and Steynsrus. Motshidisi Mofutsana, manager of the Itekeng Luncheon Club, said the concept has been growing in leaps and bounds since its inception in 2005, with the club having more than 205 affiliated members. She said the beauty of the occasion staged annually was that members were very much attached to the culture of volunteering, doing things together or working together practically, reflecting the concept known as Letsema in Sesotho. In aligning themselves with the concept, Mofutsana said each member contributes R50 once a year towards a savings account. With the funds they purchase food and a cow that is slaughtered to feed members and people attending the heritage feast.

“Looking at the age of the majority of the members celebrating the old way is the only form of entertainment for them. They like it very much because they show-

case their survival during their era. Also displayed is the creativity to design clothes for both men and women,” said Mofutsana. Men used to wear what is known

Tigers earn their stripes } Teboho Setena THE players of Bloemfontein Young Tigers have been rewarded for their performance in the 2013-’14 season, most notably for reaching the Nedbank Cup’s last-32 leg. The club’s management rewarded deserving players at a function held at the Boikhuco Old Age Home’s hall on 17 October. The Tigers are campaigning in the second tier league of the South African Football Association (Safa) in the Free State stream. The players were rewarded financially by British Khoarai, the club’s managing director, who expressed delight with the team’s improved performance. All the players who were rewarded were part of the squad that came close to making history in the lucrative tournament, which offers the winner the chance to compete continentally in the Confederation of African Football (Caf) Champions League Cup Tournament. The team was the only lower ranked team

of the 17 clubs in the Free State to reach the Nedbank Cup’s last-32 leg. However, they gave away the chance to progress to the next stage of 16 when they lost 4-5 on penalties to National First Division outfit Milano United. Tigers stood their ground well against Milano as they forced the game to go beyond extra time. The competition match played earlier in March had ended one all. The club embraced the newly-enlisted players for the 2014-’15 season with the view to inspire them to also do well. In an effort to inspire the current crop of players, the club’s former star midfielder Nteboheng “Disco” Nyedimane encouraged them to focus and play with purpose. Nyedimane’s sentiments were a true reflection of his journey, characterised by ill-discipline, which cost him an opportunity to play abroad. Germany was the likeliest destination for Nyedimane, who was a part of the South African u.23 team that produced the likes of Benni McCarthy, who played aboard for more than a decade – winning

the UEFA Champions League. Nyedimane was in the team that represented South Africa at the 1997 African Youth Championship and FIFA World Youth Championship in Malaysia. He was also part of the Tigers squad that made history reaching the semi-final of the BobSave Superbowl Cup (now renamed Nedbank), only to lose 0-2 to Kaizer Chiefs. “Prepare yourself to face challenges which come with the different levels of life, regarding stability, success and life sacrifices. Ask to gain knowledge, for knowledge is power. Play to achieve more, make history of your own and undo that of the generation that preceded you at Tigers. I lost the plot because I allowed fame and fortune to go to my head,” he said. His behaviour also cost him a chance to play for Bloemfontein Celtic. Nyedimane mended his attitude, returned to tertiary education to complete his studies in Sports Management and works at the Free State Sport Science Institute in Bloemfontein.
