Turflaagte man was convicted after being found guilty of attempted murder in 2003. He was sentenced to serve a jail term of seven years and was only released in May 2011. While in prison, Tola formed a four-man jazz music group and the quartet thrilled audiences whenever they performed. People started noticing his singing talent. His admirers advised him to take music seriously and, as they say, the rest is history. “Music has always been in my blood. I attended Nzame Primary School and I began to compose my own songs in 1994. However, I got hooked on a life of crime and lost focus completely,” Tola told Express. Shortly after being released from prison, Tola headed for Johannesburg in search of greener pastures, but the grass was not as green as he had thought. He knew nobody in that part of the country and he was forced to sleep on the street for more than two months. “I met with Vincoco Molefe who introduced me to William Mthethwa (one of the oldest gospel singers in Mzansi). They took me into the studio and asked me to perform two songs. They were so impressed with my talent they even set up a meeting for me with Danny Moleko (former director of operations in the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in the Free State).” The result of their meeting was an opportunity to record his debut ten-track album at Mike Bakamela’s Studio in Bloemfontein. “Mike wanted R6 000 to record the album in his studio. Mr Moleko paid R4 000 on my behalf. I still need to raise R2 000 to complete it. I am unemployed and battling to raise that kind of money. I appeal to Express readers to help me,” Tola said. “I am a changed man. I have committed my life to God completely. I do not want to steal from people anymore. I want to work for myself. I do not want to go back to prison – I have learnt my lesson. Crime does not pay!” he said with tears in his eyes. The ex-convict appealed for sponsorship as he is currently facing financial challenges to release the album. He is currently staying at Eden Shelter in Bloemfontein. Anyone willing to assist Tola can call Sidwell Guduka on 082-710-0823.

PRESENT: The 2013 Free State Teachers’ Awards were launched in Welkom on Tuesday.

Teachers’ hard work rewarded } Lesego Ditheko FOR one to be working were they are working, studying were they are studying and earning the salary they are getting – it all starts in a classroom with teachers, lecturers and tutors – the main reason why jobs are created and the economy is growing. Therefore, appreciation ought to be shown for the hard work that educators do. The South African National Teachers’ Awards were introduced in 2000 to show acknowledgement and appreciation to teachers who have given up all to serve, love, care and guide aspiring future doctors, engineers, journalists and all professions that learners wish to be in. Since 2000, the Free State Department of Education has been hosting the Teachers’ Awards around the province in different districts. Last Tuesday, the launch of the Free State Teachers’ Awards was held at the Leseding Technical School in Welkom, Lejweleputswa

District. Focus was on the winners of the 2012 Free State Awards which included Johannes Melesi, who was the national winner in the Prof. Kader Asmal Excellence Award, as well as A. Swanepoel, the national winner of the Excellence in Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning Award. The runners-up were Amelia Mofokeng of the Tikwe Primary School in the Excellence in Primary School Leadership category together with Jeanette Vilakazi in the Kha Ri Gude Mass Literacy – Supervisor category. Stanley Malope, the head of the Free State Department of Education, thanked the guests and forwarded an apology from the MEC Tate Makgoe for not being able to make it to the launch. “The MEC could not make it due to a sudden meeting that could not be avoided.” Malope re-assured the guests and the winners of last year’s National Teacher’s Awards that the prizes amounting to close to R50 000

did not intend to put anything into monetary value. He said the prizes were in acknowledgement of the teachers, to appreciate the hard work put in by the teachers, but more importantly to show how special the winners were and to encourage other aspiring applicants. Other prizes included a 40” plasma screen and home theatre system from Samsung, an overhead projector, a week away to Cape Town, a laptop and a tablet communication

device. Our teacher, our inspiration was the motto. Amelia Mofokeng, the principal of the Tikwe Primary School, showed more than just excitement and said the support she had received from her family, staff and learners was humbling not only before she won the award, but also after the awards. “The attitude, commitment and support has increased positively and I would like to encourage other principals to enter and encourage their staff members to enter too.”

Tiffany the no. 1 number cruncher THE South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (Saica) announced Tiffany Wong, a gr. 12 learner from the St Michael’s School for Girls, as the Free State champion of the Sage Pastel Accounting Olympiad for 2013. Perseverance and preparation eventually paid off with Tiffany taking the numberone spot after a nail biting three-month wait following a lot of number crunching by the country’s top gr. 12’s. The olympiad challenged learners across the country to think outside of the box when it came to Accounting – a task not many can fulfil. Tiffany was thrilled to hear that she had come out on top, saying she was glad that the hours she put in had paid off. “I love Accounting and I put a lot of time aside to study and learn how to work out the formulas. It starts becoming more and more fun,” she said. Tiffany’s Accounting teacher, Madri Groenewald, said she was very happy for Tiffany. “She works extremely hard in class and she also assists her peers when they struggle to grasp some of the aspects of the subject. I spend a lot of time explaining the basics in gr. 8 and gr. 9. Learners’ thinking patterns can be formed during this time – almost everything can be figured out using the Accounting equation. “Other than that, Accounting needs complete dedication and lots of practice. My advice to learners is to be specific when you ask

your teacher,” she added. Tiffany attributes her achievement to her Accounting teacher. “Mrs Groenewald has always done her best to ensure that we understand what is being taught. The best advice she imparted to me and the other learners was to practise. This advice is simple, yet effective, with all subjects that require calculations,” she said. Tiffany further added that she received tremendous support from her family. “My family and friends have supported me and allowed me to learn and at the same time also have fun. When I was called by Saica and informed that I had won, I could not wait to tell my family.” Understanding the need to keep a balanced life, when she is not excelling academically, Tiffany enjoys spending time with her friends and family. She is an avid reader and enjoys watching movies when she has time. Joanne van der Walt, the marketing manager for Sage Pastel Accounting, was awestruck by the dramatic rise in registrations as much as she was by the terrific results the annual event produced. “We are delighted with the increasing number of participants and hope to grow the competition in ensuing years,” she remarked. Gugu Makhanya, project director for Transformation, Growth and Professional Development at Saica, shared her thoughts on the record numbers. “The enthusiastic participation can be at-

Veteran writer motivates African writers } Tladi Moloi

KHOTSO PETER DAVID MAPHALLA, Sesotho veteran writer, urged young authors to come together and promote African languages. He said it was time for them to sit in the driving seat and make their mark. “We want young writers. I have written books, and I would love to produce people who can set the standard higher than me. During his address at the Writers Day celebrations held at the University of the Free State (UFS), Qwaqwa Campus, on Thursday.” He encouraged the Metjodi Writer’s Club to recruit more people and pointed out that he was worried by the death of young writers. He said Metjodi had lost two young people in a year. “Today we are encouraging the writers to come together and do their job. They can only achieve good things if they are united,” he said. Maphalla said Sotho used to be an underrat-

ed language, but that people were taking it seriously nowadays. “Our people should be proud of their language, as am I,” he said. Maphalla said it was their duty as veteran authors to encourage young people to write in their home languages. Andre van Zyl, head of Humanities at the university, said the event was aimed at stimulating reading among the students. He said the event was celebrated annually. “We normally invite learners from different schools to be part of the event and this year we invited three schools,” he said. Katleho Mokoena (18), a gr. 11 learner of the Thala Bodiba Secondary School in Qwaqwa, said he was happy to be part of the Writers Day and added that as a poet he was inspired. “I was happy to be part of the event. “I stopped writing a few years back, because I thought no one would consider us, but after this motivation I’ll start writing again.”

Case lodged with SAPS about building LEONA KLEYNHANS, DA councillor in Maluti-a-Phofung: YESTERDAY a case was lodged with the SAPS (Harrismith case number CAS 176/8/2013) against the municipal manager of the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality, Mr Ntombela, for “demolition by wilful neglect of a national heritage asset”. The municipal manager must ensure that the laws of our country are respected and implemented in his municipality, or face criminal charges for his lack of respect for the same laws. This is the culmination of a struggle over many years to get the municipality to address the security, maintenance and use of the Old

Harrismith Club situated in Stuart Street in the centre of town. Since 2010, several warnings have been issued to the municipality by the Free State Heritage Council to take seriously its legal obligations with regard to this National Heritage Asset, the most recent being a compulsory repair order issued last week. Promises have been made to the Heritage Council by the municipality that the issue will be addressed. Despite numerous promises to the community to secure the building and find suitable occupants to rent the building to, to date nothing has been done. Last year an advertisement was published in the local media calling for proposals for the use

of “unused municipal buildings”. Several proposals were lodged by individuals, businesses and community organisations offering to rent the building, and renovate it in accordance with the prescripts for a heritage building. This tender closed on 12 April. Numerous enquiries to the municipality were met with the assurance that the proposals were being processed. I have now received the information that this process has been abandoned and “something else” will be done with the building. It must be stressed that this building has now been totally vandalised, all electrical wiring has been stripped, floor planks have been ripped out, almost all doors, doorframes, windows and window frames have been stripped, fireplaces have been removed, ceilings are falling down, the roof is collapsing and the entire

place is covered in human excrement and filth. Not even the illegally operating driving school located on the pavement can use the building. A month ago Ntombela promised me that he would immediately ensure that there is 24hour security at the building. This has not happened. The total incompetence of officials, the political interference in this issue, as well as the complete disregard and contempt for the sensitivities of the community and its history, not to mention the contempt for the laws of this country, can no longer be tolerated, and it was decided to take drastic action. This hugely historic building was built by members of this community, and belongs to the residents of Maluti-a-Phofung. It is not the personal property of the current political leadership to do with or neglect as they please.

Community and CPF must work together

ADV. SEPHIRI MOSHODI, Free State CPF chairperson: AS the Free State Community Policing Forum we wish to join the president of the country, Jacob Zuma, the premier of the Free State, Ace Magashule, and the entire South African Police Service management in condemning in strongest terms the scourge of crime happening in our communities. The killing of vulnerable, defenceless elderly people, including women and children, needs to be dealt with head-on and we call upon all the people of the Free State to heed the clarion call by Premier Ace Magashule and the Police, Roads and Transport MEC, Butana Khompela, in exposing these ruthless criminal elements that are hell-bent on hijacking our townships and streets through the victimisation of innocent communities. The emergence of gangsters in areas such as Botshabelo, Kutlwanong, Meloding and Thaba Nchu cannot be left unchallenged. The Free State CPF calls upon all our communities to join CPF structures in their localities so as to make it difficult for criminals to operate. The recent merciless killings, rapes and molestation of the elderly, women and children must be confronted with the might that displays a high level of public participation in all CPF-related activities in the Free State. The recently held Provincial Crime Prevention Summit, graced by both the Police minister, Mthethwa, and the national police commissioner, Gen. Riah Phiyega, as well as Magashule and his entire cabinet, demonstrates the seriousness with which the government views crime in our country. The launching of the Provincial Crime Prevention Strategy in the Free State by Magashule in July is a further indication of how serious and determined the Free State government is in tackling issues relating to crime in the province. The mere presence of both the deputy minister of Police, Maggie Sotyu, and Phiyega serve as a further demonstration on the part of the national government and its strategic stakeholders that fighting crime in partnership is the most viable strategy that could eradicate crime in our communities and neighbourhoods. The Free State CPF therefore calls on and extends a hand of invitation to all our traditional leaders, church leaders and the business community to join government in the fight against crime and also condemn the recent killing of Teboho Kapoko at an initiation school in Kutlwanong, Odendaalsrus. Necessary efforts by our government to ensure and safeguard the safety of the initiates in these schools must be fully supported by all role-players involved in this cultural practice by reporting any illegal activities taking place in these initiation schools. For those who wish to work for a safer, crime-free environment in the Free State you are urged to visit your nearest police station to enquire about CPF-related activities, including its programmes, and to obtain information on how to join the CPF.

End of winter ushers in new trends } Xolani Stuurman WITH spring knocking at the door, all winter fashion trends and styles of dress will be seen as the cold and dull winter season itself, as it makes way for a colourful summer. Fashion can be defined as the most popular style of clothes, a personal appearance or behaviour. Fashion is a way of expressing yourself with what you wear every day. Style, on the other hand, can be described as the quality of being attractive and impressive in your demeanour which would make people admire you. The fashion guru Gleo Fabudoll (25) advises fashion lovers that they will never

go wrong with black or white. Fabudoll, who is also a choreographer, blogger and owns a modelling academy, says both men and women can go with any variation of black and white because they are classic colours. She says fuller figured people should stay away from black and leather outfits as these makes people look bigger and leather exposes their fuller figures. Letshego Dinoke (19) is dressed in a vintage styled outfit, which is back in fashion. Vintage is the way our grandparents used to dress way back. She said: “I’m a fashion guru mysel. Every look I put together, comes complete with a nod of approval from my alter-ego

glitz-chick.” A Graphic Design student, Reuben Masithela, is a guy who is trying to introduce, Italian dress sense with a street urban edge which is dapper, fresh and classy. “When dressing yourself don’t wear clothes that do not match. You must always try to look clean, dapper and dandy,” said Reuben. Mamello Gaebei (21) was dressed in a classic look that suits fuller figured women. She is a woman who loves making a statement, as her necklace showed. She is a confident woman that has spark and is proud being a big boned. “I’m a statement woman and I rock my look like nobody’s business,”she said.

Circumcision done at clinic HOLA MONNA is a Medical Male Circumcision (MMC) clinic targeting males from the age of 12 upwards. The clinic does medical male circumcisions every

day of the week (Mondays to Fridays) from 08:00 to 16:30. Consultation is free of charge. They also do HIV counselling and testing (HCT). They help both

HIV positive and HIV negative people – however, an HIV positive patient’s CD4 count must be 350 and above. Important reasons for getting circumcised include that

this procedure: ) improves hygiene; ) reduces your risk of HIV Infection; ) reduces the risk of contracting sexually transmitted disease (STI’s); ) lowers risk for

you to develop penile cancer; and ) reduces your partner’s risk of cervical cancer. Requirements if you want to undergo the procedure and are younger than 18, include that a guardian or parent must accompany you. Also, if accompanied by guardian, an affidavit from the police station must be completed to verify that the person accompanying the child is indeed the guardian of the child. Parents or guardians must also bring their ID, as well as that of the child. Children must eat something before visiting the clinic and wear comfortable pants. The patient’s pubic hair must also be shaved. The service is available at the Pelonomi Hospital, as well as at the Botshabelo Hospital.

Cheetahs want to avoid 2nd defeat } Sidwell Guduka THE Toyota Cheetahs will look to avoid a second straight defeat when they meet the Natal Sharks for their Absa Currie Cup clash at the Free State Stadium on Friday. The kick-off is at 19:10. Naka DrotskÊ’s side kicked off their campaign with a narrow 30-29 away win over the Golden Lions in Johannesburg on 10 August. Despite having led by 14-10 at the break against the Western Province in Cape Town this past Saturday, the Cheetahs went on to lose the match by 14-15 in a tightly-contested affair. Naka will definitely field a strong squad against their KwaZulu-Natal opponents in what is expected to be a thrill-a-minute tie. The last time the two unions met the Cheetahs defeated the Sharks by 12-6 in the Super Rugby match in Durban on 20 April. For them to register a win, the Cheetahs must bully the Sharks off the ball at the breakdown area and make sure they control possession from start to finish. They must also avoid bad decision-making on the field and try to win every ball from the scrum.

The Sharks started their Currie Cup season slowly, going down 30-32 to the Griquas in their own backyard, but they followed up their loss with an emphatic 33-25 success over the Lions in Durban. So the visitors will be coming to Bloemfontein looking to register their second win of the season, but they will have to be at their best to overcome the hosts in front of their supporters. MAMA GIFT BROUGHT PEACE IN MY BROKEN UP FAMILY

For many years I suffered a lot in my marriage. I had daily fights with my husband and had no peace because of my jealous family, friends and my in-laws also hated me. I felt betrayed and heartbroken by my own people. Sleepless nights and stress nearly killed me. I tried many healers, but they all failed to help me, until I heard about Mama Gift on a spiritual program on the radio. With the only R500 I had in life, Mama Gift took my fortune readings and surprised me by telling me accurately about my husband’s hidden family secrets. She then made special prayers and gave me powerful herbal Indian Holy Water for Cleansing and a Special Oil. Within just a few days a miracle happened: all my enemies and family in-laws who hated me, came back to make peace with me. After suffering 15 painful years, today we are the happiest couple and I am also grateful because of Mama Gift. Her Special Prayer of Blessings has made me become a successful business lady.

Ramokone reclaim’s glory at race } Rufus Botha and Sidwell Guduka GODFREY RAMOKONE, the former World Cross Country Championships junior athlete, is back at his brilliant best. The 28-year-old runner cruised over the first 9 km with four of the best the province could throw at him when he decided enough was enough. He put in a decisive surge for approximately 800 metres and opened up a gap which allowed him to take it easy over the last 2 km to claim gold. Ramokone crossed the line, looking as fresh as a daisy, in a respective 37:47, whilst second placed Tshepo Motsehela (SAPS) grasped for air, clocking 38:07 for silver. “It feels good to have won the race and qualified for the South African Championships. I am so very happy. I think windy conditions worked to my advantage. Most of the runners struggled against the wind,” Ramokone told Express. “I was expecting a tough race, because other runners also came well prepared. I want to thank my coach, Norman Modise, for this victory. Norman and I have been working extremely hard for the past few months. Our hard work has paid dividends,” he said. Now Ramokone said he was targeting the South Africans Championships in Potchefstroom on 7 September where he will be competing in the 12 km crosscountry event. His next target, he said, was the 21 km road race in East London on 21 September. “My preparations for these upcoming events started a long time ago. I’m super fit and raring to go. I would love to see myself winning the two races next month. With hard work and determination I believe anything is possible,” said Ramokone. Chabeli Nyedimane of Transnet, who was the Free State’s foremost long distance runner two years ago, seemed to have lost his killer instinct combined with a lack of fitness and had to settle for third in a poor – according to his standards – 38:36. The fourth position was scooped by Emmanuel Mkhabela, who does not belong to any athletics club, in 38.38 – while Khothatso Mokone of the Kovsies Athetics Club finished 10th in 40.30. Poulo Mokoena of the Maluti FET College (38.49), Samuel Matsepe of

“I was expecting a tough race, because other run ners also came well pre pared.” – Godfrey Ram okone Eskom (39.10), Thabang Masihleho (CUT Athletics, 39.13), Thulo Nyedimane (Transnet, 39.51) and Zweni Moreng (Eskom, 40.12) – finished fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth respectively. There was no surprise in the women 8 km championship race when the favourite, Annah Moeketsi of Transnet, broke the tape first in 30:56. However, what was surprising was that Moeketsi’s victory was not as convincing as expected. Anneke Gildenhuys, the Kovsies student and former junior world cross country athlete, crossed the line in 31:10), just 14 seconds in Moeketsi’s wake. The Free State’s best middle distance (800 m and 1500 m) woman athlete, Danél Prinsloo from Kovsies, looked like she was on her way to cause an upset when she drew level with Moeketsi at the halfway mark, but a severe stitch caused her to stop twice. Eventually Prinsloo had to settle for a distant third place in 32:12. True to her guts, Moeketsi decided to give the 4 km race for senior women a go later in the day. But big was the surprise when the “unknown” athlete from Nedbank Bloemfontein Achilles, Esbé Strydom, took the race by the scruff of the neck and made mincemeat of all her challengers. Strydom, who lives in the small town Vrede, won by the proverbial sea mile in a brisk 14:45. Moeketsi had to settle for silver this time, 46 seconds behind a devastating Strydom. For the uninformed, spectators and athletes alike, the “unknown” 32-year-old Strydom was in her University of Potchefstroom days one of the country’s best long distance athletes and a former South African Universities champion in the half marathon (21,1 km). The senior men 4 km race turned out into one way traffic for Thabang Masihleho from the Central University of Technology (CUT). He clinched the title in a quick 12:18 to win by more than 20 seconds.

POINTING TO THE SKY: Mamelle Makha, one of the die-hard Bloemfontein Celtic fans.

Photo: Gerhard Steenkamp/Backpagepix

Loyal Celtic’s fan wins a big prize } Sidwell Guduka IT pays to be passionate about football – and Mamello Makha, one of Bloemfontein Celtic’s most recognisable fans, can attest to that. The Bloemfonteiner recently walked away with a whopping R16 000 courtesy of MTN after being chosen as the best dressed female fan during the Wafa Wafa match between BidVest Wits and Bloemfontein Celtic in Johannesburg. As part of their Women’s Month celebration, MTN is giving away R16 000 to the best dressed female fan who comes to any MTN 8 fixture clad in their club’s regalia. Makha was the first woman to be honoured on Women’s Day by the cellphone giant as the Wits-Celtic encounter was the first for this year’s edition of a tournament dubbed Wafa Wafa. The sports management student at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) came to the Bidvest Stadium for the cup clash in a smartly designed Bermuda jump-suit decked with green and white stripes of

Abraham Tikwane 076 728 0243

Celtic colours, football socks, a green tie and a striking gigantic Mexican hat. “I was inspired by the Mexicans during the 2010 World Cup Tournament to look striking when attending games, and also their big hats that looked very cool and I thought I could create one for myself and localise it. I urge women to look into sports for work opportunities. There is so much value we can add in this field and the game allows for many growth opportunities.” Makha started supporting Celtic at the age of seven thanks to her mother who was a food vendor outside the football stadium near her home and only started gaining popularity as a female football fan towards the end of 2008. She plans to use her winnings to give back to the company that took her to school, Big Bravo Construction, to afford kids who come to the company after her to benefit from the same generosity. Meanwhile, Chairmane of Mahlomuza Mamelodi West – who is a Kaizer Chiefs fan – walked away

with the winner’s cheque of R16 000 in the match that involved Kaizer Chiefs and the University of Pretoria (UP). “This is amazing, I never thought for a moment I’d win such a big prize for merely attending my favourite club’s match,” she said with tears of joy. Cecilia Pot from the Masosobane Village in Phokeng was chosen as the winner during a match between Platinum Stars and Free State Stars, while Elizabeth Ngoato was awarded the Female Fan of the Match award during the Orlando Pirates versus SuperSport United game. Upcoming MTN 8 matches: Saturday, 24 August Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates at the FNB Stadium (15:00) Sunday, 25 August Platinum Stars vs BidVest Wits at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium (15:00) Tuesday, 24 September Orlando Pirates vs Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium (15:00) BidVest Wits vs Platinum Stars at the Bidvest Stadium (19:30)
