thumb as he and his sisters, Omphile (He has given me), Onthatile (He loves me) and Oarabile (He has answered), went for their first check-up at the Life Rosepark Hospital in Bloemfontein. The excited mother from Fauna in Bloemfontein said it was a blessing for her to have the foursome and
she was just happy to be a mother. “The children’s grandmother, Puleng Selekoe, helps me a lot to look after the children, especially as their father currently works in Pretoria,” she said with a smile. The healthy four babies were born at 29 weeks with only the lastborn, Oarabile, weighing less than

Homeless and destitute } Tladi Moloi
“WHERE should we go from here, because we don’t have a place to live?” That was a question posed by some of the people who had illegally pitched tents on the municipal land which is known by many as “Hlokoloza” at Fateng tse Ntsho near Paul Roux. Express Eastern Free State published the story in last week’s edition where the illegal shacks were removed by the Red Ants, a task force team in both Fouriesburg and Paul Roux. Thereafter many people were left homeless and now the three tents which have been pitched on the site by some of the people who were evicted from their shacks are a true reflection that they have nowhere else to go. During Express Eastern Free State’s visit to the site a heart-breaking situation was found where men and women were sharing the two tents to sleep at night. It was also lunch time for the poor people during the visit. Express Eastern Free State has learnt that in order for the people to eat, good Samaritans cook in the location and bring them food. This has been happening since the second day after the shacks were removed. Mathapelo Lephuthing (49) said she had decided to sleep with the evicted people on the site because of the (pictured) grandmother. “I feel their pain and my husband understands that I’ll live with them until they get a place to stay. “They are our people
and we cannot just let them suffer. I would have loved to accommodate them at my place, but the house is too small,” she said. Lephuthing said the evicted people slept there on the first day without any roof over them. She said people in the location gave them tents to use. Ben Mbogazi (60) said: “I pitched a tent because I had nowhere to go. I pitched it on Monday after spending a few nights under the trees. I don’t know what will happen from now, but if they chase me away anytime from now, I won’t come back.” Mokete Lephuthing (32) said he had managed to get a place to live after his shack had been dismantled. However, he said he had spent a couple of nights with those people adding that an injury to one was an injury to all. “It is not safe for these women so we look after them at night. We only sleep in the morning when they are awake,” he concluded. Tjhetane Mofokeng, the executive mayor of the Dihlabeng Local Municipality, said they were aware of the tents and added that they would make sure that they were removed as soon as possible. “If we sympathise with those people and leave them there, others will join them and that will just be a waste of time. “We are still busy with the provincial government about the two sites in Fouriesburg and Paul Roux. “These people should wait until we get back to them with answers,” he said.

Fund to aid small businesses
} Lesego Ditheko
A R30 MILLION KITTY has been made available for small businesses around the Free State, the provincial government announced last week. The fund will accommodate small businesses, from vegetable and fruit hawkers to crafters, in maintaining their success in the trade world. Briefing the media last week, Economic Development MEC Msebenzi Zwane said their research revealed there were about 1 200 cooperatives registered on the province’s procurement database. He told the media about the importance of SMMEs being the main conveyors of services throughout all sectors. “School feeding schemes are cooperatives, therefore to maintain enough sustenance for learners, the food schemes should be financially muscled to do the job,” he said. Zwane said industries such as the textile industry also needed a boost to keep on manufacturing local products that would help generate revenue not only for the province but also for the country. The criterion, Zwane said, that was needed from aspiring small businesses was an ID book. “The focus is on businessmen and -women who have been in the sector for more than ten years and have not been able to acquire reasonable profit,” he said. In response to the question of favouritism concerning people who were funded due to relations with government officials, Zwane stated that it did not mean if a businessman who had been struggling to make ends meet was related to a government official they would be left out. “If the business is legitimate and such a person needs funds there is no problem in being assisted by government,” Zwane said. The MEC urged members of the community who were in the trade sector and who were struggling with their businesses to come forward and apply for the funds.

Marshals unhappy with parking system } Palesa Motshabi
BARELY two months into Bloemfontein’s new parking marshal system, some motorists and marshals have voiced their unhappiness with the system. Launched by the Mangaung Metro mayor, Thabo Manyoni, at the end of July, the system has seemingly angered some motorists who bemoaned the fact that they had to pay even if they parked for just a few minutes.
About eight parking marshals Express spoke to said they were unhappy with the whole system. Not allowed to wash cars “I’ve been on the street as a parking marshal for over ten years, and I used to make R200 or more a day if I washed some cars for R35, but now we are not even allowed to wash cars or get any tips,” said one of the parking marshals. Customers “I used to make lots of money
because I had weekly customers, monthly and daily ones. “In that way I was able to have transport money and food for my family,” he said. Payable fee Express understands that as soon as a car is parked, the motorist must pay immediately with the payable fee based on the time he estimates he will be parked at the particular spot. Most motorists, the marshals said, simply refused to pay.
Another parking marshal told Express a motorist, who refused to pay, threatened to shoot him and also didn’t want his car disc to be scanned as it was the rule/policy made by the municipality that if a motorist did not pay, their car’s disc should be scanned and a fine ticket would be issued to them. Sworn at “Most of the time we are sworn at and it also ruins the relationship we had with the motorist as
we’ve been working with the people for years,” one of the marshals quipped. Qondile Khedama, Mangaung Metro spokesperson, said the nature of the pilot project was that it adhered to all legislations of the country and good labour practices. Contracts “The group that is currently working is on probation, and once the probation period comes to an end, people will be given contracts,” he said.

Night-shooting exercise held } Sidwell Guduka
SOLDIERS of the South African Tank Regiment participated in the Night-Shooting Training Exercise in the Free State on Friday. The event was held at the Gen. De Wet Training Area, De Brug, just outside Bloemfontein. The shooting exercise lasted for two hours. Lt Col William Jansen, the commanding officer of 1 SA Tank Regiment, said the aim of the Night Shooting Training Exercise was to qualify the crews; especially gunners and commanders on prime mission equipment. “The reason for this shooting is to enhance our night-fighting capabilities. It will be useless for us to only train during the day. When we go to the battle we also have to be able to fight at night,” Jansen told Express. Jansen said most of their members that participated in the Night Shooting Training Exercise were learners on the MBT MK2 Gunnery course that had to be qualified as gunners. “During this training we qualify Military Skills Development Members (MSDS) as gunners, drivers and loaders on our Olifant MK1A Main Battle Tank (MBT). Further-
more, the regiment also provides continuation training and re-training to already qualified tank crews with the purpose to provide effective and combat-ready tank capability. “This is our final phase in preparation for Exercise Seboka that will be held in Lohathla, where the deployed squadron will engage in a number of exercises,” he said. Members of the community were invited to the event to witness the soldiers’ fighting capabilities. “The secondary objective of the exercise is to allow the general public of the Mangaung Metropolitan to witness and experience our conventional capability in the form of our main battle tanks. We also want them to see whether we are combat ready. “We conduct this kind of shooting that is open to the public once a year. We invite them by word of mouth. We don’t advertise or publish anything, but the soldiers invite their families and friends to the shooting exercise,” Jansen explained. “However, from time to time, we conduct smaller night shooting exercises whereby we invite only soldiers to come and shoot,” he said.

Network upgraded OVER the next two months Vodacom will be upgrading its network in the Bloemfontein and Kimberley central business districts (CBDs). The upgrade, which will see the replacement of the radio equipment in the company’s base stations, is expected to increase capacity and further improve network performance. “What we’re doing is essentially replacing the very heart of the network in these CBDs. The benefit of this is twofold – firstly, it will improve the customers’ experience on our network, and secondly, the new equipment uses less energy and requires less cooling, which is better for the environment,” Jorge Mendes, Vodacom’s managing executive: Central Region, said. This latest technology upgrade ensures that Vodacom’s customers will continue to experience the best and widest coverage in the country. The upgrade, which started on Monday in Kimberley, is expected to be completed by the end of November. This includes an optimisation period during which network fine-tuning takes place to get the most out of the new equipment. “Once the new equipment has been installed, we’ll then start the optimisation process. There may be some network instability during this period, but I must stress that this will be temporary and we’ll be doing our absolute best to minimise any possible disruption,” said Mendes. In total, Vodacom will upgrade more than 175 sites in the Kimberley and Bloemfontein CBDs. This is on top of having rolled out an additional 56 new sites across the region in the past year and a half to further extend coverage. Vodacom is also busy increasing the number of sites connected to its own high-speed transmission infrastructure. This activity forms part of Vodacom’s on-going network investment strategy, which has seen the company invest more than R28 billion in South Africa over the past five years. Vodacom plans to spend in the region of another R7 billion on the network in the current financial year.

THE South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (Saica) recently presented the Monyetla Bursary Project with a sponsorship of R10 000, being the proceeds from their golf day held earlier in the year. The Monyetla Bursary Project is a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) in Bloemfontein aiming to assist matrics from previously disadvantaged communities to qualify for bursaries in the fields of Accounting and Engineering. Top Maths and Accounting learners are assisted by some of the best educators in the province to improve their results to qualify for bursaries for tertiary education. Over the past seven years the Mo-
nyetla Bursary Project has helped scores of young people to qualify for these opportunities. Last year learners attending classes from as far as Ladybrand, Fauresmith and Edenburg in the Southern Free State, accumulated 86 distinctions in the final examinations. This year 500 matrics also attended a very successful Winter School in addition to the normal Saturday classes. Matrics who are part of the programme expressed their appreciation for all the institutions supporting this community project. According to Chris Grobler, the programme coordinator, the success of this project may be attributed to the
support of a number of stakeholders in the local business community: the UFS Centre for Accounting supports the project; Interstate Bus Lines spends more than R300 000 per year to transport students from Thaba Nchu and Botshabelo to attend classes at Vista on Saturdays; Raubex Construction sponsors matrics from rural schools who cannot pay the tuition fees. Other important stakeholders are the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (Saica), the Advancement of Black Accountants of Southern Africa (ABASA) and the Auditor General who awarded cash prizes to the top students in Mathematics, Accounting and English.

We have good role models IT’S often said South Africa has a shortage of role models. Perhaps that is why plastic celebrities take prominence in our society. Whether these fake personalities are like former ANCYL president Julius Malema – the freedom fighter from Seshego – is a subject to explore another day. What I want to know here and now is why on earth this country’s overseas-based footballers have a bad tendency of snubbing Bafana Bafana. On Friday, a day before Bafana took on Botswana in the crucial 2014 World Cup qualifier at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, coach Gordon Igesund kicked midfielder Thulani Serero out of the national team camp for disciplinary reasons. His decision shocked the whole country as Serero was expected to play a pivotal role during Saturday’s fixture.
My view Sidwell Guduka Express reporter However, the no-nonsense Igesund explained after the match his reasons for axing Serero. “On Friday, my assistant coach Serame Letsoaka came to me and he said Thulani had approached him to tell him he didn’t want to play. Serame said Thulani felt that he might get injured and he needed to play for his team (Ajax Amsterdam of Holland). So, I was quite shocked with that and I called Thulani, the team doctor and my assistant coach to a meeting in my room,” the coach said. “I asked Thulani: ‘Are you injured’? He said: ‘I have a tight muscle and I’m scared I might injure myself’. “So I said: ‘Thulani, you got to
work with me here, son. You know I want you in the team and now you say you don’t want to play’. So I asked him: ‘What do you want me to say when people ask me why you are not playing?’ and he said if they asked him he would say no comment. The doctor was there and I asked him, ‘I want to know from you, Doctor, has Thulani got a slight injury?’ The doctor said he didn’t have an injury and he had a tight muscle like six or seven other players. “It turns out Thulani told the doctor that he didn’t want to play because he’s has a big game in Holland next week – a UEFA Champions League match and he can’t afford to get injured. There was no patriotism there. I can’t take that, it is unacceptable. I was annoyed because why did he even come? He was even arrogant at some stage and he stood up and said: ‘If you want me to say I’m injured, then I’ll say I’m injured’. That
really got me going. The truth of the matter is that Serero turned his back on us because he wants to play in the Champions League. That is insulting in my opinion,” he continued. “Thulani flew business class which costs R60 000 to fly over here with the intention of not playing,” Igesund concluded. Serero is not the first player to have turned his back on South Africa. In the past, players such as Bennie McCarthy, Quinton Fortune, Mark Fish and Lucas Radebe, to name but a few, used to choose their overseas-based club over their country. They often snubbed Bafana whenever they were called up for national duty. Are we so thick-skinned a nation that we cannot accept when people move on with their lives? There’s no bigger honour than playing for your country and players should appreciate the honour to play
What I want to know here and now is why on earth this country’s overseas based foot ballers have a bad ten dency of snubbing the Bafana Bafana. for their country. I hope Serero’s decision to snub the national team will not come back to haunt him in future. Bafana will not be weaker without a prima donna like Serero. In fact, the national team will play better and become stronger by his absence. Igesund should never select pompous, arrogant players for future Bafana camps. How can there be a shortage of role models when this country has Dean Furman, Andile Jali, Thabo Nthethe, Itumeleng Khune and Kagisho Dikgacoi?

LUDWIG KOEKE MOER, tournament director, Lehlohono lo Maduna, Sasfa representative, De on Scheepers, head master of Grey Col lege, Andy Scott, Nedbank represent ative, and Lucas Sekwena, Sasfa re presentative, at the laungh of the Ned bank Grey College Soccer Tournament in Bloemfontein on Friday.
Soccer tournament launched } Sidwell Guduka NEDBANK and Grey College on Friday launched the u.19 school soccer tournament to be held at Windmill Park on the Grey grounds in Bloemfontein later this month. The tournament, which features 20 secondary and high school teams, will kick off on 21 September and will run throughout the weekend, and until Tuesday, 24 September. The overall winner stands to win a trophy, gold medals and a whopping R25 000 to be used for soccer development programmes at their school. Runners-up and the team finishing third will receive silver and bronze medals respectively. Speaking at the event, Andy Scott, who is the head of group sponsorships at Nedbank, said his company had been a proud sponsor
of soccer since 2008 with the launch of the lucrative Nedbank Cup. “Soccer has been a great platform to connect with South Africans who love the beautiful game, and we are delighted to make a positive contribution to the Bloemfontein community by supporting the Nedbank Grey College Soccer Tournament for the second year. Through the Nedbank Cup we are able to contribute to developing youth talent and giving deserving players the opportunity to make their mark. I’m confident that the Nedbank Grey College competition will play its part in advancing the sport among this year’s participants,” Scott said. Ludwig Koekemoer, the tournament director, said Nedbank’s continued commitment to the development of football at youth level was highly appreciated by Grey College Second-
ary, the local organising committee, visiting teams and the community at large. “This is a fantastic initiative by a corporate giant and this event will undoubtedly grow in stature, as promising footballers will have a platform to display their talents,” said Koekemoer. Players that have been unearthed in some of Grey College’s tournaments and are now plying their trade in the PSL, include the likes of Bradley Grobler (SuperSport United), Vaughn Miller (Platinum Stars), Keamogetswe Wolff (Bidvest Wits), Lerato Manzini and Bongani Mpandle (both Bloemfontein Celtic). Others are Luvolwethu Mpeta (Platinum Stars), Dino Visser (Black Leopards), Mzikayise Mashaba (Bidvest Wits), Mpho Maruping (AmaTuks) and Lerato Shabangu (Moroka Swallows).
Visser wants to take Leopards to top } Sidwell Guduka DINO VISSER has vowed to help his new club, the Black Leopards, to win promotion to the Elite League. The former Bloemfontein Celtic glove-man joined the National First Division side on a one-year loan deal, after the frustration of playing second fiddle to Patrick Tignyemb at Celtic. He made his Leopards debut against Roses United in a match that ended goalless in Botshabelo. “The reason I decided to join the Leopards was to get more game time. I was getting frustrated at Celtic because I always sat on the bench. I thought I was not given a fair chance to fight for the number one jersey, hence I asked the club to loan me out. Game time is very crucial for a goalkeeper,” Visser told Express. “Initially, I was meant to go back to Platinum Stars as they were planning to sell one of their keepers. Unfortunately the
deal didn’t go through. “I wanted to remain in the PSL, however, there weren’t any teams looking for a keeper who will fight for the number one jersey. “Coming to the Leopards was not a bad choice for me. I’m originally from Polokwane, so I settled in quite nicely.” Visser said he was happy to have kept a clean sheet in his first game of the season. “I was excited to get the first game under my belt. Keeping a clean sheet on my debut was a cherry on top. My primary goal at the club is to help them bounce back to the Premiership where they belong. The Leopards don’t deserve to play in the lower league.” Visser said it was nice working with such an experienced coach as Costa Papic at his new club. “It has been good working with Coach Costa. He’s a very good mentor. I hope I’ll get as much game time as possible.”

Scorer living his dream
Basit Adam says he wants to be the ‘King of Goals’ this season of PSL } Sidwell Guduka FREE STATE STARS’ new scoring hero, Abdul Basit Adam, said he was enjoying life in South Africa. The Ghanaian joined Ea Lla Koto on a threeyear deal from New Edubiase at the beginning of the current season and he made his debut against SuperSport United recently. “My move to South Africa surprised me! I didn’t know Stars had been following my progress in Ghana. When my agent, Alex Ackume, told me about their interest in me I
couldn’t believe my ears. I was happy and shocked at the same time. I had always wanted to ply my trade in the Premier Soccer League. So I’m living my dream now,” Adam told Express. “They always say as a footballer you must try to be at your best all the time because you never know who may be watching you. The saying proved to be very true to me because I had no idea Stars had sent their scouts to watch me in action in Ghana. Look where I am today.” The 18-year-old has thanked the Bethlehem
club for easing his transition into new surroundings and is now hoping to help pay them back on the pitch. “I never lived outside of Ghana before. I thought that life would be more difficult in South Africa and I would be homesick. But that is not the case, I’m enjoying every moment here. “The staff, players and fans have been incredibly welcoming. It’s like a family. Everyone helps everyone, people talk, are kind and friendly. The club has helped me tremendously and this has made my life easier.”
Adam has made his presence felt in the Absa Premiership. He has managed to find the back of the net twice (against Maritzburg United and Bloemfontein Celtic) in three league matches so far this campaign and he says he wants to become the “King of Goals”. “My target is to have double figures in terms of scoring goals this season. I know it’s not going to be easy, but with prayers and hardwork anything is achievable.” Adam will be hoping to add to his scoring tally when Stars welcome Platinum Stars to the Goble Park Stadium on Saturday at 15:00.
