Letshaba scoops award for top journalism

} Sidwell Guduka TEBOHO LETSHABA has done it again. The Viljoenskroon-born Letshaba, who is one of the most respected SABC journalists, scooped the 2013 Vodacom Journalist of the Year Award for the Central Region in the radio news category for his story titled How Tatane case got bungled. The glittering awards-giving ceremony was held at the Protea Hotel Willow Lake in Bloemfontein on Thursday. “This is a huge encouragement, and I am very excited. The competition was tough. And I was impressed by its standard this year,” Letshaba told Express. Mary Papayya, co-convenor of the judging panel, said the return of the Vodacom Journalist of the Year Awards has seen the bar being raised with pockets of excellence evident in all categories, underscoring the vital need for this competition. “The judging process was a rigorous one with a professional judging panel taking part in robust debate and critical and concise decision making. “According to the judges the review of the categories for this year’s Vodacoms attracted some of the best journalists in South Africa. We hope the momentum and interest in these awards will continue,” Papayya said. The event was never held last year, but its return this year saw a total number of 832 en-

tries being received in the 12 categories. The categories are CSI/Sustainability, Editor’s Choice, Financial/Economic, Online, Photography, Print Feature, Print News, Radio Feature, Radio News, Sport, Television Feature and Television News. The Print News category received the most entries with 161 submissions. There were several categories in the Central Region where entries were low and there were no winners. The judges said they hoped more journalists from the region would enter next year. “We are really delighted with the response to the awards this year – and the calibre,” Maya Makanjee, chief officer for Corporate Affairs at Vodacom, said. “The independent panel of judges were presented with a great challenge to find the bestof-the-best in South African journalism, and went through a rigorous process to do so. “This year’s judging panel comprised experts in their fields, and we thank Elna Rossouw, Mary Papayya, Colin Nxumalo, Arthur Goldstuck, Johann de Wet, Joe Thloloe, Ryland Fisher and Patricia McCracken, who made their time and expertise available to us,” Makanjee added. “Congratulations to all the winners in the Central Region, and we look forward to welcoming you at the national finals, which will be a celebration of the best in journalism in South Africa,” she concluded. Meanwhile, Letshaba and other regional

winners will each take home R5 000 and travel to Johannesburg for the national finals on 1 November. Renowned poet to headline session in Bloem } Sidwell Guduka AN internationally-renowned word-smith will headline the BloemPoetry Movement’s session at the Pacofs Workshop Theatre in Bloemfontein tomorrow at 18:00. His name is Maakomele Manaka, and he was born in Soweto 30 years ago. Better known as Mak to his admirers, Manaka is a highly respected poet and he has conquered the spoken word despite a disability caused by a near fatal accident when he was 12 years old. He is the son of the late Black Consciousness activist, artist and poet Matsemela Manaka. Manaka will be sharing the stage with BloemPoetry’s finest poets such as Magic Khotseng, Black Rose, Dr Kool and Ntate Thabo. Serame Icebound Makhele, the founder of BloemPoetry and organiser of the event, said he was expecting a great response. “It is going to be a fun and exciting evening for poetry lovers. I am expecting to see the

whole workshop theatre full. “There will be music performances and an exhibition for visual arts. Also, dancers will be entertaining the audience on the night,” Makhele told Express. Manaka needs no introduction to the Bloemfontein fans. In 2006, he performed at the Macufe Poetry event with the likes of Ntsiki Mazwai, Thabo Lehlongwa, Rude-Boy Paul and our Jah-Rose. At the tender age of five, Mak received the Young Artist Award from the Funda Arts Centre in Soweto and has never looked back since. He began writing poetry at that age and his first poetry performance was at the age of 15. The poet has also performed with British poet Benjamin Zephaniah and local icon Don Mattera. In 2001, he published a compilation book of his poems titled If only. Manaka has also recorded and released a spoken-word album fused with music called Word Sound Power. He performed and toured in many countries

Mapikelas concerned about safety } Lesego Ditheko THE matriarch of the Mapikela family has raised concerns of her family’s safety after she discovered that some community members were throwing accusations around that the Free State’s Sports Department gave her millions of rands when they refurbished the historic Mapikela House. The 78-year-old Esther Mapikela, who is the granddaughter-in-law of the founder of the ANC, Thomas Mthobi Mapikela (1869-1945), said the community was accusing her of receiving a hand-out of money from the government. This happened after the home in Batho Location, Bloemfontein, was restored by the Department of Sport. She is fearing that these jealousies will expand and turn into threats. “Rumours have been going around that I was given millions of rands and that I’m hiding the truth from my family. “We received nothing after the renovations and this is what I want to tell the residents of Batho Location,” Mapikela told Express. According to the Sports Department’s spokesman, Tankiso Zola, the structure at the back of Thomas Mapikela will not be a museum, but an interpretative centre. “Prior to the erection of the centre the house was visited by many people and this was infringing on the privacy of the family. The government decided to build the centre for the family where they will receive guests and share with them the history of Mr Mapikela, show photographs in the form of an exhibition and his work without interfering with day-to-day family life in the house,” Zola said. “The centre is still under construction and security has been appointed by the contractor on a 24-hour basis to look after and protect the centre until the date when the centre will be handed over to the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (DSACR) to officially open it and hand it over to the family,” he added. Zola also stated that the security guard at the building was appointed by the contractor for the period of construction work on site. “Once the centre is handed over to DSACR new security arrangements will then be considered moving forward. The community and media houses will be informed when the centre will be officially opening.”

FS athlete on his way to Brazil V Palesa Motshabi

AN ATHLETE from the Free State will be jetting off to Brazil to compete in an international athletics competition. Molelekoa Moliko (23) of Section F in Botshabelo, some 50 km outside Bloemfontein, will be going to Brazil at the beginning of October where he will be battling it out against other athletes from around the world in a cross-country event. The 23-year-old, who will be participating in the 1 500 m and 3 000 m events, chose to be an athlete rather than a gangster – his hometown being well-known for gangsterism. Moliko told Express he had been practising twice a day to prepare for the upcoming event. “My preparations are going pretty well. I wake up at 05:30 to run 5 km daily, then jog

12 km in the afternoon,” he said. “I know what to expect in Brazil as I have been participating in cross-country for about ten years. Internationally, I’ve competed in countries such as Cuba and Mauritius.” Moliko said he was optimistic that he would come home from Brazil with a medal. “At the moment I have 72 medals and 19 trophies that I’ve won in athletics. I hope to add another medal to increase that number.” His unemployed father, Ben Moliko, said he was very proud of his son for choosing sport over illegal activities. “As a family we are proud of this young man. Going to compete abroad shows he is good at what he does. We wish him the best of luck next month. It’s a pity we won’t be able to go and support him as we don’t have money to travel with him,” his father said.

Life Rosepark receives award

THE Life Rosepark Hospital has received the PMR Africa Diamond Arrow Leaders and Achievers Award for 2013 at the event held at the Emoya Estate in Bloemfontein on Monday. The hospital scored 4,37 out of 5. It was also announced as the first overall winner of the private clinics/hospitals category in the Free State. The PRM Africa Awards are annually presented to the company or institution doing the most in their sectors over the past 12 months to stimulate the economic growth and development of the Free State. Winners in each category are chosen through a regional sample of 130 respond-

ents comprising of CEOs, MDs, business owners, company directors, managers and senior local and government officials. During the sampling strong focus is placed on the evaluation and measurement of customer service and customer satisfaction. According to Hein Rossouw, hospital manager of the Life Rosepark Hospital, the award is well deserved and a token of “our hard work, dedication and passion for our hospital and patients”. “The Life Rosepark Hospital is celebrating its 25th birthday this year. “The award is definitely the highlight of our celebrations,” Rossouw said.

Organisation holds congress THE Developing Poultry Farmer Organisation (DPFO) will be holding its elective congress at the Protea Hotel Central in Bloemfontein today. The aim of the congress is to elect a governing body to represent the organisation in the Free State. This means for the first time black poultry farmers and poultry producers will have a united voice to speed up their participation in the poultry value chain. Amongst other issues, the DPFO will be engaging with government to assist with the success of the National Development Plan 2030 (NDP 2030). Moses Modise, DPFO coordinator, says the elective conference is a significant development and it is happening in all provinces. “Black poultry farmers have a vital role to play to assist in poverty alleviation and economic empowerment, especially in the rural areas. The DPFO’s role is critical in that it is organising black farmers into a cohesive unit with one voice, especially during engagements with government and other key stakeholders. Our aim is to be the organisation of choice for all emerging South African poultry farmers.”

‘Peace not only possible, but inevitable’ } Flora Teckie

The Bahá’í Scriptures state that: “All humanity are the children of God; they belong to the same family, to the same original race”, “Love ye all religions and all races with a love that is true and sincere and show that love through deeds and not through the tongue . . .” and “ . . . let us try with heart and soul that unity may dwell in the world, that all the peoples may become one people, and that the whole surface of the earth may be like one country.” The constructive role that religion can play in creating a peaceful global order and the destructive impact that religious fanaticism can have on the stability and progress of the world cannot be denied. Considering that frequently religion is used for the accomplishment of narrow ends, there is need for us to contemplate on

the appropriate role which religion should play in our lives and in public sphere. According to the Bahá’í Scriptures: “Religion must be the source of fellowship, the cause of unity and the nearness of God to man. If it rouses hatred and strife, it is evident that absence of religion is preferable and an irreligious man is better than one who professes it.” The great peace long awaited by the peoples of the world is within our reach. Any new thinking about peace must begin with belief in the oneness of humanity. The ultimate goal is not only to end war and create agencies of international cooperation, but it is the unification of all the peoples of the world in one universal family. ) For more information, send an email to: mangaung@bahailsa.org.za or call 082-773-8301.

AS we celebrated the International Day of Peace on Saturday, let us reflect on whether peace is possible and how we may achieve it. “The Great Peace towards which people of goodwill throughout the centuries have inclined their hearts, of which seers and poets for countless generations have expressed their vision, and for which from age to age the sacred scriptures of mankind have constantly held the promise, is now at long last within the reach of the nations,” says the governing council of the Bahá’í international community in a statement entitled The Promise of World Peace. The statement continues by saying: “World peace is not only possible, but inevitable. It is

the next stage in the evolution of this planet . . .” We now have more than ever before conditions for the establishment of peace on earth. Despite all these there are persistent barriers to peace. The most common barriers are prejudices, suspicions and self-interest. In order to achieve peace we need to accept that we are one human species. Physical differences such as skin colour or hair texture are superficial and have nothing to do with any supposed superiority of one ethnic group or another. According to the Bahá’í Writings we are like flowers in one garden, the fruits of one tree and the leaves of one branch. Although we differ from one another physically and emotionally, and have different talents, we all belong to the same human family.

Grand prix to be held } Lesego Ditheko

PULENG DITHEKO goes for a practice run on the water.

LEARNERS from Parys will be among competitors in the international powerboat tournament to be held at the Abrahamsrust Resort in Sasolburg in December. The grand prix tournament will be held on 14 and 15 December. Free State Tourism, led by MEC Msebenzi Zwane together with the president of Powerboat South Africa, Christo de Jager, and Metsimaholo mayor Moeketsi Moshodi, launched the F2 World Championship Powerboat Free State Grand Prix. Zwane said the importance of the tournament is on the same scale as the 2010 Soccer World Cup Tournament. The tournament will be hosting 18 international F2 drivers from 10 different countries. Among the countries, Italy, Sweden and Azerbaijan, including South Africa’s own Wynand de Jager, will be in the three-day powerboat tournament. According to Zwane, statistics show that South African lives are lost in water in the inland areas due to lack of knowledge of how to survive in water. “Water as being part of our lives should be treated as a resource that can help us.” He placed it in simple words by saying as black people, unlike before when parents stopped and scared children from playing in the water by saying “there is a snake in the water”, should encourage them to be one with water. The 18-year-old Puleng Direko from Parys is one of the students who has been powerboating for the past four years. “Though we don’t have a car at home, it only took me a day to drive the powerboat.” She further said that the community respects her for what she was doing though they didn’t think she would survive in water, she beat the odds and will soon be the first black woman in South Africa to lead the country to greater depths and higher waves.

Bank ‘adopts’ high school

} Lesego Ditheko

UBANK has announced it has adopted the Kgorathuto High School in Botshabelo. Formerly known as TEBA Bank, Ubank’s management team visited the school with the Free State premier, Ace Magashule, two weeks ago. And they did not go there empty handed. The bank donated five computers to the school and they also gave it a facelift by painting the classrooms. Luthando Vuthula, Ubank’s chief executive officer, said they had chosen Kgorathuto by first consulting with stakeholders who had recommended the school because it had met the criteria. “This is part of our social

responsibility programmes. We want to make this school a conducive environment for the learners,” he said. Meanwhile, Bungane Radebe, chief operating officer of the bank, said for the bank to invest in the communities in which they operated formed a critical part of how they did their business. “It is this philosophy that sets us apart and allows us to uplift the lives of our customers. We have a commitment to allocate 4% of the pre-tax profits to community development annually,” he said. Ubank opened their second branch in the Free State in the Bloemfontein CBD. Their first in the province was opened in Welkom some few years ago.

Mangaung Metro scoops top awards } Sidwell Guduka

THE Mangaung Metro Municipality was the big winner at the PMR Africa Awards function held at the Emoya Estate in the outskirts of Bloemfontein last Monday. The Thabo Manyoni-led municipality walked away with Golden Arrow accolades for being named as the municipality doing the most to attract foreign investment, the most for social upliftment, the most to clean the environment, the most for job creation and the most to attract tourism. Other awards won by Mangaung were for a pro-active mayor, municipality doing the most to attract local investment, municipality doing the most to fight crime, exciting/interesting heritage/historical sites/buildings, top attractions and the fresh produce market. Johan Hattingh, the CEO of PMR Africa, said: “The awards were aimed at enhancing competitiveness and to set benchmarks for companies and institutions to aim high. We want to celebrate excellence and the people who are receiving these awards are rated high in the business sector by the people in the Free State. “The awards represent competitiveness, effectiveness, excellence, leadership, resilience and indicate customer service and customer satisfaction while their purpose is to celebrate excellence in the public and private sectors.” When explaining how the nomination process for the awards worked, Hattingh, said: “This is not a competition where you have entrants, a company cannot enter the process or ask to be nominated and rated. It is based on a research process that covers all the major

See trophy at Loch Logan } Sidwell Guduka ABSA, in collaboration with the Toyota Free State Cheetahs, will bring a smile to the face of Bloemfontein rugby fans when they parade the Absa Currie Cup trophy at the Loch Logan Waterfront Mall today. Rugby fans will get the opportunity to pose with the elegant Absa Currie Cup trophy and get autographs from the Cheetahs players at the signing session between 15:00 and 16:00. Be sure to be part of this unique experience that Absa calls the “Human Spirit”. You could walk away with fabulous prizes. There will be Absa hamper give-aways at the signing session and an opportunity to win

an all-expenses paid trip to the 2013 Absa Currie Cup final. Meanwhile, the Cheetahs will be looking to redeem themselves when they take on the Western Province in an Absa Currie Cup match in Bloemfontein on Friday. Naka Drotské’s men lost their previous game by 26-50 against the Sharks in Durban last weekend. This fixture will give them the opportunity to bounce straight back to winning ways. The Cheetahs are sitting fourth on the log with 16 points after 7 matches, while Province are second on the table with 24 points after the same number of outings. Kick-off at the Free State Stadium is scheduled for 17:00.

Fans should be worried My view

Sidwell Guduka Sports editor SOME Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates fans breathed a sigh of relief after last Monday’s 2013 Telkom Knockout draw in Johannesburg. “We got a soft draw,” some said while others proclaimed with hidden smiles that the draw was “cooked” to benefit the two Soweto giants. For me there is nothing to be excited about. In fact, they should be more worried about this outcome. Let those fans not fool themselves into thinking that just because their clubs have avoided each other, and the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns, Platinum Stars, Bloemfontein Cel-tic, SuperSport United and Free State Stars – they are now as good as having qualified for the next stage of the tournament. In the previous seasons, we have witnessed the so-called smaller teams causing big upsets in cup competitions. So Chiefs and Pirates should expect a tough match when they square

off with Polokwane City and Mpumalanga Black Aces respectively. City, who on paper are no-hopers, surprised all and sundry; including themselves, when they registered a shock 2-0 victory over Ajax Cape Town on Sunday. Following this win, Eduardo Schoeler’s troops will go into the 5 October fixture oozing a lot of confidence. Schoeler, who was thrown in at the deep end as a caretaker coach for City after the club parted ways with Duncan Lechesa last week, knows quite well what a win over Amakhosi could do for the morale of his players. He will try to impress the management of the Limpopo side by recording a second win on the trot. So my question is: If Schoeler is lucky to beat Chiefs next month, will City’s head honchos appoint him as their new head coach? I don’t think so. The Brazilian does not have adequate coaching experience as he has worked as a physical trainer for more than a decade in his native country, before coming to South Africa in July. In the past few days, big names such as Ian Palmer and Vladislav Heric were linked with City, but the PSL rookies have yet to name a successor for Lechesa. We shall see who will be-

come the new coach for City. Time will tell. Going back to a “cooked” draw, Pirates could find the going tough against Aces who have assembled a strong squad to compete in the PSL. The likes of Clifford Ngobeni, Onyekachi Okonko and Mabhuti Khenyeza hold the key for Amazayoni. ) Last year’s Telkom Knockout finalists, Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelodi Sundowns, have been paired against each other in the first round of the competition. Their match will be played at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium in Botshabelo on 6 October. ) The bitter race for South African Football Association (Safa)’s top job will reach its climax on Saturday. Either Dr Danny Jordaan or Mandla “Shoes” Mazibuko will be named as the new Safa president after the organisation’s quadrennial elections that will be held at the Helderfontein Estate, Fourways, Johannesburg. Jordaan is a favourite to land the plum job after he was nominated by 32 of the 52 Safa’s last month, but Mazibuko is unfazed and he was quoted in the media as saying that many minds had changed since the nomination process after weeks of campaigning. All I can say, is good luck to both gentlemen.

WHO WILL WIN? Matsoake Moselesele and Doctor Ntsele have promised to “bliksem” each other at the Macufe Boxing Tournament. Photos: Sidwell Guduka

Gloves will come off in ring } Sidwell Guduka

THEMBA “DOCTOR” NTSELE has an opportunity next weekend to prove that he is, as many experts say, the best boxer in the Free State. The 25-year-old is set to defend his South African flyweight champion belt against Matsoake Moselesele (27) when they exchange blows over 12 rounds at the Macufe Boxing Tournament to be held at the Free State Sports Science Institute (Free State Psychiatric Complex, Oranje Hospital) in Bloemfontein on 6 October. A supremely confident Ntsele said the bout would be a too stiff test for them, but promised to knock out Moselesele. “It’s going to be a hell of a fight, because Motsoake will want to prove a point after I had beaten him last year (Ntsele took Moselesele in the tenth round). “But I’m ready for him. I’m positive I’ll knock him out before the 12th round,” Ntsele told Express on Monday.

“I’m not saying it’s going to be a walk in the park. I believe I have what it takes to win the fight. “He will definitely come with a different approach from last year, but I have a plan up my sleeve. He won’t know what hit him on the night,” Ntsele said. The Bloemfontein man won the flyweight title in 2011 when he dethroned Xola Sifama in front of a partisan and hostile crowd in the Orient Theatre. He won on points over 12 rounds. In his professional career he fought 19 fights – 15 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw. Nine of his wins were through knock-outs. Against Moselesele, Ntsele will come up against an experienced campaigner who can upset him if taken for granted. “Doctor is just wasting his time in preparing for this fight. “I’ve already won it even before I’ve stepped into the ring. “This fight will not go beyond the seventh round, I’m going to knock him

out,” Moselesele said. Moselesele, who hails from Welkom, is mourning the death of his father who passed away on Thursday, but said his father’s passing would not affect his preparations for the fight. “I won’t let my father’s death affect me. In fact, I’ll be dedicating this fight to him. I can’t wait to hit the ring,” he said. Moselesele is a graduate of the 2006 BSA and SABC Baby Champs Programme, where he defeated all his opponents in the flyweight division and was crowned national “baby champ” champion. In his professional career, he has fought 19 fights – 13 wins, 5 losses and 1 draw. Meanwhile, Lebo Mahoko, who is the tournament organiser and Dream Team Gym owner, said it was all systems go for the event. “We are ready to host a successful event again this year. “People can expect to see blood, sweat and tears when the fighters battle it out
