Fallen heroes honoured } Sidwell Guduka

BRIG. GEN. MICHAEL DE GOEDE of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) was among the many to lay wreaths in honour of South African soldiers who were killed in the Central African Republic (CAR) earlier this year. More than 13 SANDF soldiers were killed in clashes with the Seleka rebels on the outskirts of Bangui in March, while 27 paratroopers were wounded during the fight. On Friday members of 44 Parachute Regiment and families of the fallen soldiers gathered at the Tempe Military Base in Bloemfontein to pay their respects and remember all those who had died in combat by laying wreaths. “Today we stand here to remember our members who carried our mission with courage, members who risked their lives for the country. “Not only do we honour soldiers who were killed in the CAR, but we remember all the IN MEMORY OF FALLEN HEROES: From the left paratroopers who Chaplain Mogorosi Motloba. lost their lives in the country irrespective of which force they served paratroopers paid the highest price in,” De Goede said. for their country. “Paratroopers are always in the “Today we are unveilling the midst of battle and they are Wall of Remembrance for soldiers prepared to suffer hardship. our serving members. In doing this, we are also motivating members who serve the country with patriotism,” he added. Manare Senamela from Rocklands, a mother of four whose husband was killed in the CAR, said: “I become emotional every time I see soldiers. They always

remind me of my husband, Darius Seakamela. I became even more emotional when I arrived here this morning. But I’m happy to have been invited to come to this event to lay wreaths.” This solemn ceremony takes place every year on 11 November at the Tempe Military Base.

Ace addresses minority groups } Selloane Khalane “THIS is your country, you were born here, live here and will die here,” said Premier Ace Magashule, the ANC provincial chair, on Monday. Addressing minority groups at the Bloemfontein City Hall in Bloemfontein, Magashule urged commercial farmers to assist government in alleviating poverty through agricultural produce and the transfer of skills. Magashule was adamant the meeting was not a political campaign for next year’s general elections, but added that the party wanted to promote the ANC within the white community. Thabo Meeko, the ANC provincial spokesperson, denied allegations that the party had once again “rented” a crowd in the hope to boost white votes. Earlier this year the party bussed a large crowd of white people to Welkom for the ANC’s provincial conference. According to Meeko, the ANC’s provincial executive committee members were expected to invite minority groups in the working class. Magashule said unlike Cope

and the Economic Freedom Party (EFF), who have mentioned that South Africa is “black people’s land”, the ANC believes South Africa is for all. “We want to assume you want to make it a reality that the Free State and South Africa belong to all those who live in it,” Magashule explained. Most of the attendees raised concerns on the high unemployment rate in the province and poor youth development programmes. “The party should be concerned with the high number of people moving to Gauteng to find work,” said one of the residents. “Charity begins at home, yet so much money leaves the province to Gauteng,” the resident added. Although the ANC was hammered for not creating jobs, Jolanda van Niekerk, a resident from Warden, praised Magashule for building a school and RDP houses in her town. Jan Jacobs (48) from Lindley told Volksblad he was not sure which party he would vote for in next year’s elections. “South Africa still has a long way to go,” Jacobs said.

CEO of dairy project stranded in UAE } Selloane Khalane

THE Gupta-linked Vrede Dairy Project is not the only dairy project subjected to controversy in the Free State. Sello Tsolo, the chief executive officer of the Setsoto Inte-

grated Dairy Project, is stranded in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after his passport was confiscated by UAE officials. Apparently Tsolo signed an admission of debt contract written in Arabic.

According to a letter written to the Setsoto Municipality Tsolo said he was under the impression he had signed a shareholder’s contract and not an admission of debt document. In the letter Tsolo said a prospective in-

vestor had applied for a travel ban against him, which would be lifted after he had paid the alleged debt. Tsolo flew to the UAE more than three months ago to allegedly meet with a prospective investor interested in pumping more money into the collapsing dairy project. Although Tsolo had written imploring letters to the Free State government to help

him lift the travel ban, Sugar Ramakarane, the Setsoto municipal manager, told Express that Tsolo was not an employee of the municipality. Ramakarane said he had stopped the dairy project after he had started at the municipality as municipal manager. “We did not send him to the UAE. It was not an official trip,” Ramakarane said. It is not clear yet

whether the Department of Agriculture is responsible for the project. Ramakarane said even though Tsolo was not an employee of the Setsoto Municipality he had asked the Premier’s Office and the South African Embassy in Dubai to intervene. “The embassy has given him accommodation, otherwise he would have starved to death by now,” Ramakarane said. “The information we have, is very sketchy. We don’t know who he was meeting or what he was going to do there.” The South African embassy had apparently advised Tsolo not to apply for an emergency passport because he would get arrested at the airport if the travel ban had not been lifted. Another man who had left with Tsolo for the UAE, Albert Mokoena, who is a representative of Flaury Culture in Bloemfontein, is in the same boat.

Service provider launches new LTE network } Lesego Dithebe LAST WEEK the central region hosted the launch of what MTN calls its Long-term Evolution (LTE) network in the Coco C Restaurant at the Loch Logan Waterfront in Bloemfontein. Eben Albertyn, MTN South Africa’s chief technology officer, said LTE offered customers the fastest and most reliable wireless broadband internet connection in South Africa with a host of benefits such as socio-economic development and the promotion of regional development that would enhance South Africa’s global competitiveness. “Data explosion is here to stay. Data traffic continues to grow exponentially, led by video and users want to be connected to content and friends everywhere and always expecting perfect quality, zero latency and limitless speed with zero costs. MTN recognises this and hence this unveiling,” said Albertyn. This network will provide MTN South Africa customers with an infrastructure, enabled to offer holistic multimedia solutions at faster speeds and will provide a better internet experience, not only for consumers, but business at large. “Our LTE network will support education, socio-economic upliftment and innovation within the central region of South Africa, and will bridge the digital divide by bringing broadband to the semi-rural and under-serviced areas as well as bringing together mobility and high-speed internet access. “As an innovative mobile technology company, we are absolutely thrilled with this feat achieved by our skilled personnel who had worked tirelessly to deliver LTE to the central region. This is in line with our strategy to maintain and increase our leadership position by being the first to market through bringing innovative technologies such as LTE to our customers,” said Albertyn. He said MTN customers in the Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban regions were already benefiting from using MTN’s LTE network, and added that it was progressively being extended to other cities and semi-rural areas. MTN maintains that this broadband evolution offers broadband speeds of up to 70 MBps and consumers can expect speeds of between 7 MBps and 2 MBps on average, depending on network conditions. MTN customers in central South Africa will now be able to browse the internet seamlessly, stream multimedia content and have a much faster mobile online experience. LTE enables MTN’s customers to access information, entertainment, applications and services with much more richness and computing capacity. The 3G network will also be upgraded to suit the new telecommunications technology.

“The deployment of LTE in this region is part of MTN South Africa’s strategy to invest in better and faster networks, making our customers’ lives a whole lot brighter by providing them with technology that gives a seamless experience. We have recently modernised most of our base stations in preparation for LTE,” concluded Albertyn.

Bahá’is celebrate birth } Flora Teckie YESTERDAY Bahá’ís around the globe celebrated the anniversary of the birth of Bahá’u’lláh, the founder of the Bahá’í faith. Gatherings were held in thousands of localities, in homes, at public facilities, at local and national Bahá’í centres and at Bahá’í houses of worship. The celebration for Mangaung will be a multi-cultural event and at the same time it will reflect the character of our local community. The programme includes the reading of prayers and Baha’i scriptures, talks and music. Children and youth will also take part in the programme – in presenting topics and in musical intervals. The Mangaung event will be celebrated on Saturday at 11:00 in the Botshabelo H Section’s Municipal Hall. The Almighty God, Bahá’ís believe, has been revealing himself to humanity through a series of divine messengers, each of whom has founded a great religion. Bahá’u’lláh (1817 to 1892) is regarded by the Bahá’ís as the most recent in the line of messen-

gers of God including Abraham, Moses, Buddha, Krishna, Zoroaster, Christ and Muhammad. Bahá’u’lláh authored more than 100 volumes of writings, which form the Sacred Scriptures of the

earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens.’ “He further affirms that the unification of mankind, the last stage in the evolution of humanity towards maturity is inevitable . . . and he regards the love of mankind and service to its interests as the worthiest and most laudable objects of human endeavour.” The teachings of Bahá’u’lláh upon which a new world civilization should be founded also include the elimination of all forms of prejudice; full equality between men and women; recognition of the essential oneness of the world’s great religions; the elimination of extremes of poverty and wealth; universal education; a high standard of personal conduct; the harmony of science and religion; and the establishment of a world federal system, based on collective security and the oneness of humanity. The worldwide Bahá’í community is working to give practical expression to Bahá’u’lláh’s vision of a peaceful and prosperous world, in partnership with others who also cherish the goal of building a better society.

WITH December fast approaching, some of us are fortunate enough to receive a 13th cheque or bonus of sorts. Although it is tempting to spend this money on upcoming festivities, many consumers are unsure how they should allocate this extra cash to stretch it that little bit further. Studies by the South African Reserve Bank indicate that household debt is currently sitting at 75,8% of disposable income. “This number is cause for concern,” says Aneesa Razack, head of Strategic Growth at FNB Investment Products. “Many South Africans are using the biggest portion of their disposable income to service their debt thus leaving very little available to cater for everyday living expenses and savings. A 13th cheque or bonus is a great opportunity to settle expensive debt and make a start toward savings for emergencies, your children’s education or retirement.”

Throughout his writings, Bahá’u’lláh called for a complete restructuring of the global social order. His vision of renewal touches on all aspects of life. Bahá’u’lláh outlined certain fundamental principles upon which this new world civilization should be founded. As the guardian of the Bahá’í faith wrote: “Of these principles the most vital is the principle of the oneness and wholeness of the human race, which may well be regarded as the hall-mark of Bahá’u’lláh’s revelation and the pivot of his teachings. Of such cardinal importance is this principle of unity that . . . He unreservedly proclaims it as the central purpose of his faith. ‘We, verily,’ he declares, ‘have come to unite and weld together all that dwell on earth. Eskom extends its sincerest condolences BRIAN DAMES, Eskom chief executive: WE have all been devastated by the recent accident at the Ingula Power Station construction site, which claimed six lives and injured seven other workers. I would like to publicly extend my personal condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. Our thoughts and prayers are also with those who have suffered serious injuries. I would also like to send a special message to the community around Ingula, and to the nation at large,

about Eskom’s commitment to safety and the measures we are taking to ensure the safety of those who work on our sites. Thousands of people come to work at Eskom’s new build sites every day. While Eskom is proud of the job opportunities created by our construction programme, we and our contractors also have a duty to protect those to whom we and our contractors offer work. We have a responsibility to see that those who come to our sites return home safely each night. Nothing is more important to us

than the lives and safety of the people who work for us, and we have put significant resources behind a bestin-class safety awareness programme. To achieve Eskom’s goal of Zero Harm, we have worked to instil a set of five life-saving safety rules that

apply to employees, suppliers and contractors performing work for Eskom. Most of the workers on our construction sites are employed by contractors, and Eskom continues to expect these contractors to make safety their number-one priority. We are reviewing all special steps to ensure that all contractors comply with this policy. The Ingula site is shut down temporarily while the necessary and thorough investigation with the regulator continues. When the site reopens, we will have made every effort possible to ensure that such an

accident does not happen again. After the incident, Eskom had also ordered a temporary shut-down of Eskom construction sites around the country. This had been done so that Eskom and our contractors could review the safety measures on those sites and satisfy ourselves that no worker is placed needlessly at risk. We at Eskom share the grief of the families and friends of those impacted by this tragedy. We are determined to learn the lessons from this accident and to continue to make Eskom a safer place to work at – for Eskom employees and for everyone associated with our building sites.

Wanderers Bolton FC awaits Tyron } Lesego Ditheko WHILE other learners were writing their year-end exams, Tyron Mondi was doing something completely different. Last Monday saw the dream of the young Heidedal born soccer-superstar come alive. Mondi won a £25 000 (equivalent to R395 000), one- year scholarship to expand and an opportunity to showcase his soccer talent at the Bolton Wanderers FC International Soccer School. This came after Mondi and talented boys namely, Tshegofatso Mabaso, Mpho Gift Molelekoa, Tubatsi Excel Motaung and Vuyo Donald Tshoba, went through different trials at the Bolton facilities to compete with players from 14 countries around the world to be accepted at the soccer school. The project now in its third year has scouted and sent 15 players through to the programme. The Free State Tourism Authority and Simsport International partnership, according to Rasthoem Simons, who is the general manager of Simsport, the only Fifa match agent in Spith Aafrica (international matches), started out purely as a development project with the aim of finding raw soccer talent in 2011. By then, they had recruited 40 boys and camped with them at the Louis Botha Technical High School during the June

OVER THE MOON: Tyron Mondi. and September school holidays. About 2000 players are scouted every year to join the camp. According to Simons, the length of the project is expected to run over a course of five years. That also depends on the department’s interest in extending it. Simons said with regard to scouting talent in the rural areas, they had engaged in talks with the South African School Football

Association to extend the reach of their scouting process, as it is in relations with the Education Department. “We chose Bolton Wanderers FC, because it poses the best education as compared to other football academies in the world. My opportunity to travel around the world led me to find this Category 1 standard academy in the UK and this school puts one

on par with big European soccer teams such as Chelsea FC and Manchester United FC, although the team itself was relegated three years ago,” explained Simons. The man of the moment’s parents, Paul and Sylvia Mondi, expressed their feelings of joy and a little sadness with their son’s achievement. Paul Mondi said as a former soccer player himself, coaching

his son started at the age of six and that’s when in later years he realised his boys impeccable talent and passion for soccer. Sylvia, on the other hand, said though she was sad, she was happy for her son. “I am thankful to God for my boy and one of the important aspects that Tyron was brought up with was that of going to church and as a young boy his behaviour has been that of a young man dedicated to his education and soccer.” Amongst his love and talent for soccer, Tyron, who is a gr. 10 learner at the Brebner High School, also has his mind set on being a chartered accountant. “I am going to miss home, but as a footballer you have to adapt to the environment of whichever place you play at. I would like to thank my parents and the school coach for the support and mentoring me. “My short-term goal is to play for Bolton Wanderers, though locally my favourite team is Ajax Cape Town. My dream is to win the Ballon d’Or as the first South African player,” said the 16-year-old Free State soccer star. Mondi is set to leave the country to join the Bolton community at the beginning of 2014 where he will be spending the whole year learning new tricks and skills. Should Mondi pass and impress the overseas coaches, he will be automatically accepted into the academy on a full-time learning basis.

Top athlete Blandina named sports star 2013 BLANDINA MAKATISI has been chosen as 2013’s Sports Star of the Year for Express. The 17-year-old, who is a learner of the Trompsburg Secondary School, was spotted two years ago after winning a 10 km road race in Lesotho. Her coach, Anton Mostert, and at this stage also Blandina’s guardian in South Africa, together with his wife, started to coach her in 2012. “If there is a rough diamond that can be cut to become one of South Africa’s leading women long-distance athletes, it is Blandina Makatisi,” Rufus Botha, the athletic expert and freelance journalist, wrote about Makatisi in the Volksblad a couple of months ago.

Makatisi was invited by Elana Meyer to the Endurocad (South African Endurance Academy) in Stellenbosch together with 20 other athletes from around the country to participate in a training programme in June. This member of the Xhariep Run/ Walk for Life Club was the only middle- to long-distance athlete from the Free State to be invited by Meyer. During the programme the athletes got the opportunity to show their potential. From this group, athletes will be chosen to be prepared for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. From the 20 athletes from across the country who participated in the

Game on for PSRC

} Sidwell Guduka THE Parliamentary Sports and Recreation Council (PSRC) on Wednesday launched the inaugural National Legislative Games at the Free State Legislature in Bloemfontein. The event, which will be hosted by the Free State Legislature, will take place at the Tempe Military Base and Central University of Technology (CUT) in the province’s capital from Friday until Sunday. All nine provinces of South Africa will be taking part in different sporting codes. Speaking at the launch, Dr Zukile Luyenge, the chairperson of PSRC, said: “Sport and games are a means of mental and physical growth. We learn how to maintain mental balance in the midst of hopes and despair. They help us learn how to

tackle a difficult situation. “Sport and games develop a sense of friendliness. They develop team spirit. They help in developing mental and physical toughness. They shape our body and make it strong and active. They give us energy and strength. They remove tiredness and lethargy. They improve blood circulation. This improves our physical well-being and efficiency.” Luyenge further said the PSRC believed a healthy civil service was critical for making government work, turning policy into reality and changing people’s lives. “PSRC desires dedicated and highly skilled public servants committed to delivering for the nation. “The PSRC is therefore committed to the health and wellness of its staff because it recognises that

public servants are not faceless bureaucrats, but real people striving every day to serve the public.” The chairman added that these games would enable parliament to interact and build relationships with all Provincial Legislatures through sport and recreation. “This programme will be an opportunity to bring together civil servants from the three spheres of Government to network and share ideas while participating in sport, irrespective of age and gender and including those with disabilities,” Luyenge concluded. All nine provinces of South Africa will participate in different sporting codes of this new initiative. The event will take place annually and will be held in all provinces on a rotational basis.
