Protesters demand more visibility of police officers in areas
} Sidwell Guduka ABOUT 100 women in black clothing marched on Thursday to hand over their memorandum of grievances to the Mangaung police station in Bloemfontein. The women of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa Women’s Manyano wore black to symbolise what they termed a Black Thursday. They sang hymns as the peaceful march proceeded from the Methodist Church in Bochabela. “We are marching today because we are concerned about the rate at which crime is happening in this country, particularly in our town. “The crime rate is escalating, especially serious crimes such as rape, domestic violence, gender violence and child abuse,” Elizabeth Letlhoo, one of the organisers of the march, says. “We no longer feel safe as citizens. We as women feel that the police are not doing enough to deal with crimes against women and children. “We demand more commitment from them when it comes to dealing with crimes against women and children,” she adds. In their memorandum, the women’s demands include the following: A special police unit should be established to deal with all cases of rape and that it must be fully resourced and an in-depth training session for officials dealing with cases against women and children. They also demand more police visibi-lity in all areas, an increase in the police force and quick response to the call for service. The memorandum was received and signed by Lt Motsamai Lefefa, the station commander at the Mangaung police station. Meanwhile, Const. Joy Xaba, spokeswoman for the Mangaung police station, says the memorandum will be forwarded to the management of the SAPS in the province. “Their demands are genuine. The SAPS provincial office will respond to the memorandum as soon as possible.”

Why compete with men? ON a day like International Women’s Day, women are afforded the chance to take a step back from bickering in a boardroom, sipping on bitter alcohol and slipping into ill-fitting pant suits and really take stock of the achievements of the modern women. We hear that in the old days, a woman was thought to be over-stepping her bounds if she acknowledged the great things she did because she was but an object. I am immediately grateful that those days are over, because I am a number of words short of being diagnosed with verbal diarrhoea. Sure enough, there are millions of women in the world who know little of the freedom which I can attest to. But then there are those like myself and my friends who are born into a time where we can have our say. There is much to be said for this modern woman who roams the earth freely, driving her own car, owning property and climbing the corporate ladder. She is smart, she is fit and she is in charge. She also, however, is responsible for a great injustice to those less fortunate than she and those that will come after her time. Equality is great, but the time has come to vacation from it, long enough to have the chance to think with a clear head. I am thinking that somewhere along the line we are losing something great and we don’t even realise it. Does equality really mean proving that I too can have a boy toy, throw back a whiskey and make the dirtiest joke? If being a man was what the good fight was about, then I am disheartened. Surely there is more to this experience. It is kind of like hitting the high score of one of these modern mobile games – which doesn’t compare to the old school stuff – and being utterly disappointed. This is the point where one can’t help but wonder what it is to be a free woman and being elated with being just that. Don’t be mistaken: Being in charge is fun, but finding and establishing an identity that I can claim for my own might just be even better. I am thinking it would
My view S’thembile Cele Journalism student be just grand to capture the world’s attention without taking my clothes off. This is not too say that there is a one size fits all mould – because those are the outfits you stay away from no matter how cheap they are – but surely there is something about being a woman that is worth celebrating. There is something almost magical about being able to give life – should you choose to do so – providing a quiet strength in the midst of a fierce storm, doing jumping jacks with a heavy chest. Why compete with men when there actually is no competition? We are already turning the world on its head by evolving and being so flexible, dynamic and generally awesome. And so, on this day I plan to take a break from the rat race that is my life and indulge in a disgustingly sweet cocktail – or beer, I don’t know – while I read a good book. I’ll reward myself, because I’ve done well in my 22 years – and so have you. Interest hike not necessarily bad IN January South Africa experienced its first interest rate increase since 2008 on the back of a weaker rand against the US dollar and other major currencies. The 50 basis-points rate hike resulted in the prime lending rate increasing from 8,5% to 9%, putting financial strain on those who are servicing debt, such as commercial property repayments or revolving business credit. Elize Giese, head of FNB Commercial Investments, believes this presents an opportunity for those who have savings or investments. Giese says: “Investors are likely to benefit from a rate hike as it influences the interest they could earn on their savings. This is the perfect time to revisit one’s investment
strategy with a view of unlocking potentially far better returns. “Even though the chances of earning higher interest are vastly possible during this cycle, investors should take note of the investment periods they commit to. Giese adds that investors should take comfort from current consensus among economists, which suggests that the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) is likely to increase rates by 1% during the course of this year. “The potential increase is largely due to ensuring manageable levels of inflation and to shield the economy from the impact of a weaker Rand.” Giese says investors should use this period to carefully plan their investment strategy.

RAF, Education donate shoes } Palesa Motshabi A TOTAL of 200 pairs of school shoes and school bags were donated to school kids at the Bainsvlei Combined School in Bloemfontein last week. The event, part of the back-to-school campaign, was a collaboration of the Road Accident Fund (RAF) and the Free State Education Department. The campaign was launched in January last year with 2 000 shoes being donated to various schools across the country. This year, the RAF will donate 1 000 school shoes and 1 000 school bags to children in five provinces including North-West, Gauteng, Limpopo and the Western Cape. Gugu Mosalanyane, manager of the RAF’s special campaigns, says they joined hands with the Education Department to help them identify disadvantaged schools where they can assist through their campaign. “We acknowledge that there are some parents who cannot afford to buy a pair of shoes for their children, and that is where we come in as a department to assist with such issues in our society,” says Mosalanyane. “The RAF has five campaigns they are
focusing on and these are education, health, poverty alleviation, road safety and environmental issues”. The Free State Education deputy director-general, Motseki Monnane, thanked the RAF for extending their hand and working together with them to restore the pupil’s dignity by giving them school shoes and school bags. “This will help these learners keep their heads up with a smile as they walk to school,” he says. Monnane mentioned some of the challenges faced by learners from disadvantaged backgrounds, especially those attending farm schools, often lead to the children dropping out of school. “Some of these learners walk long distances to school and some don’t have shoes or they come to school with an empty stomach, and they end up dropping out of school,” he said. Monnane said the Department of Education in the province is working on building few hostels for schools on the farms for pupils who walk long distances to schools. The Bainsvlei Combined School is one of the schools that got a 100% matric pass rate for the class of 2013. The school has 769 pupils from gr. 1 to matric.

Petrol hikes increase fears } Palesa Motshabi FOLLOWING this month’s hefty petrol increase, South Africans have been told to brace themselves for several other increases as the petrol price is expected to reach the R16/litre mark by the end of the year. Petrol attendants on the other hand feel these increases are affecting them negatively. “It is sad that the fuel price keeps increasing every month but petrol attendants only receive a salary increase once a year in September,” one petrol attendant said. On 4 March the petrol price rose by 36 cents/litre, taking the price to R14,32 per litre, while diesel rose by 28c to R13,39 per litre. Express spoke to petrol attendants who shared their view on how the petrol increase is affecting them personally. “When the fuel price increases, people think it only affects motorist but the reality is we (petrol attendants) are affected too. Businesses will stop using their cars and rather rely on one or two cars,” says Themba Mokoena*. “Because business people will not be filling their cars, the petrol station starts to make small profits and it forces the garage owner to cut our working hours or even retrench some of the staff members,” continues Mokoena. Another worker raises concerns that the government should start looking at the filling station owners because, according to him, most filling stations are making money but they are paying the petrol attendants peanuts. In a telephonic interview with Express, Deon Carolus from National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) in the Bloemfontein district, says when fuel

CUT, Merseta take hands PROF. THANDWA MTHEMBU, the vice-chancellor and principal of the Central University of Technology (CUT), and Wayne Adams, COO of the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (Merseta), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the CUT recently. “The Merseta is comfortable that the CUT has the capacity, the capital and human resources as well as skills to ensure that this investment yields sterling results for both parties. It should, therefore, be clear to all here that the investment of R6 million in the next three years is well invested in this partnership,” says Adams. The historic occasion is seen as an important course of action for developing a strategic partnership between the two parties as well as an alignment to the national strategy of government and the Department of Higher Education and
Training’s (DHET) commitment to bridge the current skills gap in engineering fields. This is an outcome of talks that were held at the CUT to discuss the important role that the university could play within the Further Education Training College (FETC) sector and Technology Education Colleges in the central region (Free State and Northern Cape). In his statement of the agreement, Mthembu says: “I have three stories to tell, the good, the bad and the best story. The bad story is that over 3,4 million youth between the ages of 15 and 24 are unemployed or out of school. The good story is, in 2009 the DHET brought the Setas, universities and FET colleges together so that they could collaborate more and more. The best story is that the minister of the Department of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande, launched the white paper (Post-School Education and Training Policy) recently to address the bad story and six weeks later the CUT and merseta are implementing the programme.” The parties are to work in consultation with one another on conceptualisation, development and support for the DHET Post-School Education and Training Policy, including: ) Providing and advancing access of youth to further training and higher education institutions in the central region through articulation of offerings and programmes of FET colleges into the CUT. ) Advancing Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) in FET colleges in the two provinces. ) Continuous professional development of FET lecturers and technical school teachers in STEM. ) Advancing STEM among female students in FET colleges in the two provinces. ) Supporting the national agenda of increasing the pool of graduates in scarce STEM subjects and broadening access of female students in STEM fields.

Konco: Get an education first } Sidwell Guduka PRIORITISE education over sports, says Khumbulani Konco, the CEO of Bloemfontein Celtic. The former Orlando Pirates and Celtic player was studying while playing football professionally, and he obtained a BSc Honours. In an exclusive interview with Express, Konco says footballers should go to school to receive an education and to further their careers outside of soccer. “At Celtic we wish that all our players with matric can register with different institutions to further their studies. We always encourage them to go to school so that they can have something to fall back on when their playing days are over. “Even those who did not finish matric must go back to school and make sure that they matriculate. “A matric certificate is a minimum requirement that many companies look for when they need to recruit new employees. We want our players to become responsible citizens once their playing days are over, starting with a solid educational foundation,” says Konco. “Players are role models in the society and a lot of youngsters look up to them. We believe this will encourage even the community members to see the importance of education through players,” he adds. It is no secret that footballers earn

The majority of them become jobless and struggle to make ends meet once they retire,” the CEO explains. He says his club is currently embarking on a programme where they visit schools to encourage pupils to prioritise education over sports. “We believe that it is important for learners to put education ahead of sports. We always try to encourage them to finish their matric first
before considering taking sport as their career, even if they are good at any sports they are involved in. “We don’t want the youngsters to make the same mistakes we made in the past. It was believed that if you are not good academically then you should pursue a career in sport. That was a wrong concept. We need to correct that.” Amongst Celtic’s current crop of players only two are currently busy with studies. They are Blessing Mngomezulu and Thapelo Morena. Mngomezulu is enrolled at the Central University of Technology (CUT). He is studying part-time towards a national diploma in Environmental Health. He is in his third year. As for Morena, who made his professional debut against Maritzburg United last year, he is doing his matric at the Petunia High School in Heidedal. Meanwhile, Lerato Lamola is one of very few local footballers armed with a formal education that could sustain him beyond the field. The fearsome striker has completed courses in both Law and Logistics at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) a few years ago. Today, football comes first for Lamola – and he is excelling for Celtic. He has been in a great form, creating and scoring important goals for the club.
IN a one-sided match at the Batho netball courts in Bloemfontein on Saturday, the St Bernard High School faced the realisation that, inevitably, the team of the SABC was the better netball team. The sides met in the St Bernard Netball Tournament final which was organised by the school to raise funds for the event that they would be hosting in September later this year. The SABC won by 32-12. Showing more maturity, stamina and strength in play, the SABC gained as St Bernard waned as the game progressed. The SABC were off to a strong start. The attacking players played a patient and controlled game despite the high intensity of the match. The attack combination of Constance Potsane, Veronica Kathaza, Mbali Mokoena and Monica Potsane was solid, and a number of goals were scored in the beginning of the first quarter. Despite a few good minutes of play by St Bernard, they were hampered by a lack of confidence in the goal circle. It was in moments like these that the maturity of the SABC side showed.
