provincial elections because of an apparent rift between him and the long-serving ANC chairperson and current premier, Ace Magashule. “The Weekly newspaper’s smear campaign against me is the broader project that contributed to this outcome,” Khothule said.

Recently, The Weekly published a scathing article accusing Khothule of being one of the big guns funding Julius Malema’s political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Khothule is the only MEC whose name failed to make it to the ANC provincial list which flagged Magashule’s name at the summit. Sources said the ANC provincial spokesperson, Thabo Meeko, had been tipped as the new Sport, Arts and Culture MEC. Khothule said he had not expect his name to appear on the list and referred Express to the party’s provincial secretary, William Bulwane. Bulwane said Khothule remained of a loyal member of the ANC and would be utilised in other areas within the party. “This is not the end of the world for Khothule,” Bulwane said. Magashule’s long-time ally and party deputy, Mangaung Metro mayor Thabo Manyoni, also didn’t appear on the list, increasing recent suspicions of a souring of relations between him and Magashule. Bulwane denied suspicions of rifts between the two and said the party wanted to retain Manyoni as the mayor of Mangaung Metro. Meanwhile, the Lejweleputswa District mayor, Mathabo Leeto, came in at number four on the list and is apparently also earmarked for an MEC position after the new premier re-shuffles his or her cabinet after the elections. Sources said Leeto had been promised the position last year

in exchange for securing support for Magashule at the party’s re-run provincial conference. Bulwane said after the elections the party’s Provincial Executive Council (PEC) would submit names of three candidates for the premier’s position. “The newly elected premier and I will then decide who

makes it to the Free State cabinet,” Bulwane explained. The speaker of the Free State legislature, Ouma Tsopo, will also vacate her position as speaker to represent the ANC at the National Assembly. Tsopo’s deputy, Sizwe Mbalo, is tipped as her most likely successor. Running water after 20 years } Palesa Motshabi AFTER 20 years of receiving water for only two hours a day, residents of Hertzogville say they finally have a good story to tell. The Tokologo Municipality, which incorporates Hertzogville, Dealesville and Boshof, last week opened the water treatment plant which will ensure 24-hour water access for residents. Pule Mpokele (28) spoke with joy when he was explaining how the water plant will change their lives. “Ever since I have lived in Malebogo, Hertzogville, we only received water at 05:00 for only two hours a day. However, from now on we will be able to have access to water throughout the day,” said Mpokele. He continued to explain that as an unemployed young man he would be able to grow a garden and support his family, because those were some of the things they could not do without access to enough water. Mpokele said his siblings would finally not only know what a swimming pool looked like, but would also finally learn to swim. “We would love to have swimming as a sport for our brothers and sisters, because we didn’t get the opportunity when we were young. The challenges of not having water deprived us of this pleasure. “We can now bath three times a day, this is what we call 20 years of freedom and democracy indeed.” Boitumelo Seakge, Tokologo mayor, said proudly that he appreciated the patience and faith the residents had when he had told them that they would have water very soon. “They (residents) never went out to boycott or cause chaos for not having water, they were very understanding all the time,” said the mayor. “We as a municipality are very happy,

“I wish everyone could learn from your (Hertzogville residents) patience and not just vandalise things and demand water. “In some places water pipes were installed a long time ago and then burst but you find these people boycotting rather then asking first why they suddenly do not have water,” said Mabudafhasi.

Fighting number of TB infections } Palesa Motshabi THE treatment of tuberculosis (TB) in the Free State is set to be revolutionised with the use of the GXPERT machine. The machine can accurately detect whether a person has TB or not within two hours. Dr Noor Zakhura, Free State provincial clinical manager for HIV/Aids and TB, says patients will now be able to get their TB results from their local clinic in just 24 hours. Zakhura says patients will be able to get feedback from the department regarding their TB status in order for patients to start their treatment as soon as possible. Speaking at the First-thingsFirst campaign launch at the Motheo FET College last week, Zakhura says the campaign’s main focus is to spread the message that people should get tested for TB, HIV and Aids. According to Zakhura, the Free State has the highest TB infection rate and it is the leading killer in the province. “The Motheo FET College has the highest number of people infected with TB. This includes lecturers as well as the students in the province,” says Zakhura. The campaign contributes to an objective of the 2012 to 2016 national strategic plans to fight HIV, STI’s and TB and to maximize opportunities for testing for HIV. “We are starting with the FETs, universities and the taxi rank because that is where people interact the most and where

for the First-things-First campaign. Dipoloane Phutsisi, a director at the Motheo FET College, says the

college will ensure that students and lecturers get tested for TB. “It is a priority that everyone should know their status,” says Phutsisi.

World TB Day will be observed on 24 March. The campaign will be used to get everyone screened for TB.

Approach God Programme launched with repentance } Sidwell Guduka

HISTORY was made last Wednesday when Aaron Motsoaledi, the Health minister, launched a Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine programme for gr. 4 girls in all government schools. This took place at the Gonyane Primary School in Rocklands, Bloemfontein. South Africa became the first African country to provide gr. 4 girls in all government schools with an expensive cervical cancer vaccine at the state’s cost. The vaccine protects against the sexually acquired human papilloma virus (HPV). Speaking during the launch of the vaccine programme, Motsoaledi said: “We are pleased to announce the launch of the national vaccination campaign against cervical cancer. This is an important day in the history of health services in South Africa. It marks the beginning of effective prevention against cancer of the cervix. “We are targeting to vaccinate as many as 500 000 schoolgirls with funding from our government. This shows the commitment of the government to prevent cervical cancer and to ensure the long and healthy life of women in this country.” The minister said cancer of the cervix is a serious disease that affects women all over the world. “Women in all countries are at risk of getting cancer of the

According to Motsoaledi, 6 000 cervical cancer cases are reported annually and more than half of those who contracted it died.

“Unfortunately 80% of those women are Africans. Out of the 6 000 who contract cervical cancer, 3 500 will die annually regardless of what treatment they receive,” he said. “More than 50% of women affected are between 35 and 55 years of age. “Only 20% are older than 65 years,” he added. The vaccine is not available for free at public health centres, but is available in private clinics and hospitals for between R700 and R1 000 an injection, which will amount to more than R2 100 since the vaccine is administered in three doses.

MANY Christians today are frustrated because their prayers are not answered. Many Christians’ prayers are hindered because of sins. Sin in the body is a sickness in the soul. As much as God loves us, when sin is involved in us, God will keep His distance from us. That is why today we pray for healing in the Name of Jesus for sicknesses that resist to leave the body; we pray for blessing in the Name of Jesus, but we are plagued with poverty, nightmares, evil attacks, limitations in progress refuse to go. Isaiah 59:1: When God is not involved in our matters; Satan will definitely be involved. Sin separates us from God. Once this separation happens, we stand out to be a red carpet for Satan to walk on us with pride and the dust from his dirty shoes are sickness, rejection, poverty, premature death and all sorts of uncomfortable situations in life. It is very true that every time we sin, God is always ready to forgive us, but many today take God’s forgiveness as a licence to sin, because they know that God will still forgive them. I want to tell you that the inability to resist temptation will make you become a slave to Satan. When Christians cannot say no to sin they will be controlled by Satanic devices, yet they are Christians.

God does not mind when we are tempted, but what matters to Him is the way we respond to temptations. When Satan came to tempt Jesus it was because he knew that Jesus was hungry (Matthew 4:1) but in all these Jesus never sinned. It is true Jesus was hungry but was never desperate for food. Most of the time Satan attacks children of God in their weaknesses and desperation, but if we can learn from our Lord Jesus on how He responded to temptation, Satan will fear us and will never walk on us and therefore we will never be separated from God. I know these are not popular teachings. It is bitter medication to many but Glory be to God that someone’s soul will be redeemed by Jesus Christ Himself. To hear more and learn more of these, for healing and deliverance, we invite you to attend the Sunday services at the New Horizon Ministry at the Joe Solomon Primary School in Heidedal at 09:00. You can also SMS prayer requests to 071-214-9404. Remember to come in faith. God bless you, dear reader.

UIF will help domestic workers

MILDRED OLIPHANT, the minister of Labour, has urged domestic workers to register for the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) to ensure they have a cushion in the event they find themselves out of work. Speaking at a Domestic Sector Imbizo organised by the Department of Labour in Durban on Sunday, the minister said the number of domestic workers currently registered with the UIF was not a true reflection of the total number of domestic workers in the country. There are currently 652 676 domestic workers on the UIF register.

DOMESTIC WORKERS are urged to register for the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).

Institutions like the UIF have played a critical role protecting workers against poverty by providing unemployment insurance and other benefits to workers, said the minister. “We know that some employers of domestic workers do not register their employees with the UIF. The department has set in motion the legislative framework for domestic workers to be registered. “However, in order for us to enjoy the benefits of a better life for all, you as domestic workers need to assist the government to ensure that you are registered with the UIF,” said Oliphant. The Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (Coida) is currently being reviewed by legal experts with a possibility of expanding this to the domestic sector and public hearings would be held soon on the planned review. The domestic sector’s current sectoral determination came into effect on 1 December 2013 and will end on 30 November 2014. The minimum wages for domestic workers who work more than 27 hours per week apply as follows: ) Mainly urban areas – R9,63 hourly, R433,35 weekly (for a 45-hour week) and R 1877,70 monthly (for a 45-hour week) ) Mainly rural areas – R8,30 hourly, R373,50 weekly (for a 45-hour week) and R1 618,37 monthly (for a 45-hour week). Sectoral determination regulates employment conditions in the vulnerable sectors of the economy. – SAnews.gov.za

Peugeot 308 wins prestigious title ON 3 March during the 84th Geneva Motor Show the new Peugeot 308 was crowned with the prestigious title of 2014 Car of the Year by a jury of journalists representing 22 European countries. Altogether 30 new models from American, Korean, European and Japanese manufacturers, on sale in Europe during 2013, were eligible for the 2014 Car of the Year award. The jury, reflecting the interests and tastes of 58 journalists from 22 European countries, delivered its verdict on the strong line-up of seven finalist models pre-selected in December: the new Peugeot 308 was selected as Car of the Year 2014. The new 308 is the fourth Peugeot model to be distinguished by the Car of the Year award. It comes after the 307 (2002), the 405 (1988) and the 504 (1969).

Produced at Sochaux, the brand’s historic cradle, the new 308 was launched in Europe during the last four months of 2013; production and sales in China, the biggest automobile market in the world, will start early in 2015. The 2014 Car of the Year title represents the most prestigious recognition for the 308, which embodies the brand’s values of excellence, in terms of its design, elegant and dynamic and efficient concept based on an advanced approach to weight reduction, driving experience with its innovative instruments and controls playing a part, and quality of the highest level. Sales success has already been achieved with more than 55 000 orders recorded since the launch of the model. From the start of spring the new 308 range will be expanded

by the introduction of a second body style, the 308 SW, a classy and spacious estate which, like the hatchback, takes only its name from its predecessor. To the nine engines available at launch – four petrol and five diesel with particularly restrained fuel consumption – will be added the exceptional PureTech 3-cylinder 1,2 e-THP 130 hp turbo petrol engine as well as three BlueHDi engines, including the new BlueHDi 1,6 litre 120 hp version with CO2 emissions of just 82 g/km a record in the segment. Receiving the award from Hakan Matson, president of the jury, Maxime Picat, Brand CEO, said: “With the new Peugeot 308 we were convinced we had achieved a leap in concept, technology and quality and which would soon allow it a place on the podium for the category in Europe. The award is the best confirmation.”

Restructuring at company PEUGEOT CITROËN SOUTH AFRICA recently announced a corporate restructuring that will streamline its organisation and reshape the company to improve efficiency, innovation and customer experience and provide a more efficient and robust platform to work on. Didier Gerard, managing director of Citroën South Africa, is set to leave the company he has led for nearly three years at the end of March to return to the parent company as part of a wider restructuring. Didier, who joined Citroën South Africa in 2011 at a particularly challenging time, has steered the company’s growth over the past three years. During his tenure he focused on the introduction and sales of new products to the

Citroën range, among these the DS4 and DS5. He was particularly instrumental in the introduction of Citroën into the taxi market where the company is now on the brink of becoming a significant player. A new position has been created at the PCSA Group in South Africa and will be headed up by Francis Harnie who will assume the position of managing director: Peugeot Citroën South Africa. Peugeot and Citroën will continue to operate as separate entities from a marketing, sales and PR perspective. Francis, who has been in South Africa for the past three years, brings a wealth of experience in all aspects of the business that will allow the company to continue its growth path.

Ford continues to show increase FORD continued to record doubledigit market share and maintained sales volume stability during November despite the impacts of the transportation industrial action. While the South African motor industry dealt with the distribution challenges posed by the so-called Ferry Strike, Ford delivered record numbers (1 937) of its locally manufactured Ranger. With production running at full capacity, exports also returned to their strong position as 2 565 Rangers were delivered outside of South Africa’s borders. “Ranger production returned to full capacity in early October subsequent to the industrial action over the past few months, only for the industry to face another strike,” FMCSA’s vice-president: Marketing, Sales and Service, Mark Kaufman, says. “The team has been very creative in finding places to park newly built Rangers. If an agreement is reached very soon, we will be able to recover most vehicle deliveries during December.” Dealer stock levels remained reasonably flush during November, buoying sales during

the month despite distribution challenges. “While difficult to quantify, we are estimating that November’s industry was 6 000 or 7 000 units short of what it should have been as a direct result of the strike,” said Kaufman. “Yet Ford sales showed continued strength only 90 units short of October. This allowed Ford’s market-share performance to continue strongly in doubledigit growth at 11,7%. Our new global products with the latest in smart technology features continue to impress consumers. Our average market share year-to-date is 10,1% compared to 7,7% over the same period last year,” said Kaufman. “With seven new products launched in the last 12 months, Ford sales are up 37,6%, an astounding 14 460 more Ford vehicles sold this year.” In November 2013 the South African new vehicle market came in 4,6% down on November 2012, 10,7% down on last month. Passenger car sales were 5,9% down and light commercial vehicles 4,3% down on the same period last year.

Peugeot goes green AS an on-going effort to decrease the carbon footprint, Peugeot South Africa has implemented environmentally friendly measures in people’s day to day activities. These measures include the use of re-usable plastic delivery boxes for their parts deliveries instead of cardboard boxes as used in the past.

In a technological and environmental response to current demands, Peugeot South Africa has also introduced the use of in-dealer digital advertising in the form of televisions. These televisions broadcast digital advertisements from an aftersales perspective, thus reducing the need to use print resources such as paper and other point of sale material.

Prominent figures studied WHAT did Hendrik Verwoerd and Steve Biko have in common? Or perhaps Johannes Kerkorrel and Brenda Fassie? “They all possessed a certain predisposition to prominence,” says Prof. Paul Fouche, researcher in psychobiography at the University of the Free State’s (UFS) Department of Psychology. Fouche and a team of researchers from other South African universities recently released findings on psychobiographical studies done on personalities that played a great role in the country’s history. The studies show that notable historical figures were very often prolific readers with a passion for literature since childhood. Generally, they also had a great love for nature and a sense of the sacredness of it, as well as a love for the cosmos. The study further reveals that many of them were forced to take up leadership roles in the family from a very young age and were driven to succeed in order to take care of their own. In many of these cases there was a strong partner who supported the leader while they went about the business of governing their world. “It is important to remember the context in which these studies were done. By these studies we are not trying to elevate historical figures and their ideas. We are solely focusing on these individuals’ strive for greatness or prominence and how they were able to influence a nation, a cultural group, the

literature, arts, or whatever they excelled in,” Fouche says. Fouche says their research is useful in the attempt to understand who makes history and why. “Psychobiography is the systematic and descriptively-rich case study of renowned, enigmatic or even contentious individuals in socio-historical contexts within a psychological frame of refer-

ence. Over the past decade, psychobiography has become an established research genre and a methodology used by various academics and scholars in the field of life history research. “Our focus was primarily on South African political leaders, artists, musicians, scientists and humanitarians such as Jan Smuts, Bram Fischer, Hendrik Verwoerd, John Vorster, Steve

Biko, Johannes Kerkorrel, Brenda Fassie and Emily Hobhouse, amongst others.” Physchobiography studies in South Africa have been developed at the University of the UFS, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Rhodes University and the University of Johannesburg (UJ). Since the discipline was introduced at the UFS Depart-

ment of Psychology in 2008, psychobiographies of the following people have been completed: ) Brenda Fassie ) Bram Fischer ) Alan Paton ) Frans Claerhout ) Emily Hobhouse ) Olive Schreiner ) Beyers Naudé ) Helen Suzman ) Roald Dahl.

He crossed the finish line in just under two minutes behind the winner. “It was an interesting race, I must say. I am very happy to win it, although I could not manage to achieve my target time. I had actually wanted to finish the race in less than 30 minutes,” Mokone said after the race. “Obviously, I won the race because I was stronger than my competitors on the day. I was already ahead of the running pack before I reached the 2 km mark. I led them until the finish line,” he explained. Mokone will next compete in the South African Championships on 12 April in Pretoria before running in the Varsity Athletics in Potchefstroom two days later. He will be competing in steeple chase for 3 000 m and 5 000 m respectively. “My aim is to try and win one of the two upcoming races next month. ly. “I’m not looking at the fact that Spurs are sitting on the bottom half of the table. We’ll be looking to keep our recent momentum going, but there is no way that my players nor I will be underestimating them,” Middendorp says. “If you take opponents lightly then you can easily end up losing the game, so we will be fully prepared in a professional manner. We are going to give them the respect they deserve. I am going to select regular players for the match,” he explains. The German mentor adds that his side knows what to expect when they cross swords with Spurs on Sunday. “We watched them playing against Roses United this past Saturday. We also sent someone to go and watch their match against FC Cape Town earlier this month. “So, we have done our homework. We are not taking any chances. I am positive we’ll progress to the next stage at their expense.” Before the weekend’s fixture, Phunya Sele Sele will square off with the relegation-haunted Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Sta-

‘We are going there looking to collect the three points at stake. It will be critical to register an away vic tory against a quality side lik e United.’ – Ernst Middendorp

THE Bloemfontein Celtic coach, Ernst Middendorp, has assured his side will not underestimate Witbank Spurs when they come face to face on Sunday. The sides meet in the round of last-16 of the Nedbank Cup series at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium in Botshabelo. Spurs are campaigning in the National First Division (NFD) and they are the reason Free State Stars are out of the competition. The Mpumalanga outfit defeated Ea Lla Koto 1-0 in the round of the last-32 match. Celtic dispatched the University of Stellenbosch 8-0 in Cape Town to progress to the last16. But Middendorp says while his side will be looking to carry on their recent good form, they will not be taking their opponents light-

dium in Pietermaritzburg today at 19:30. “My main focus ahead of this clash is to look at the fact that we have a proper recovery. Unlike them who played their last match on Friday, we only have three days to prepare for this game. “We are going there looking to collect the three points at stake. Cheetahs lose Venter THE Cheetahs have lost their vice-captain after the centre Francois Venter was sent home from their Australasian tour with a shoulder injury. Venter (22) is the second player to head home from their tour following the earlier departure of prop Coenie Oosthuizen due to a neck injury. Venter underwent a scan on Monday after he had been injured in the 60-27 weekend loss to the Hurricanes. “It is bad to lose Francois. He is our vice-captain and it is a huge setback,” coach Naka Drotské told Express. The Griquas flyhalf, Francois Brummer, has been flown in to provide cover as the Cheetahs prepare to face the Blues in Auckland on Saturday. Howard Mnisi could replace Venter in the starting

team, but there is also talks of Drotské trying out regular wing Rayno Benjamin at inside centre. This is to counter the expected return to the Blues line-up of the All Black centre Ma’a Nonu who has not played this year due to an ankle injury. Good news for the Cheetahs is that wing Raymond Rhule will be ready to face the Blues. The Blues will also be boosted by the return of All Blacks hooker Keven Mealamu (knee) and flank

Jerome Kaino (back from Japan). Saturday’s game at Eden Park kicks off at 08:35. ) For sports news visit

The Bloemfontein side, who have been playing like a well-oiled machine since Middendorp took over the coaching reigns, are sitting seventh on the log with 31 points after 22 outings. The KwaZulu-Natal team are sitting dangerously on position 13 on the table with 23 points after the same number of outings.
