Grab a book and read Initiative aims to improve children’s literacy levels
} Jabulani Dlamini DROP everything and read! This is what the Free State Education Department, in conjunction with the Express Group, wants you to do, at least for 30 minutes every day. The two organisations have embarked on a ground-breaking initiative to collect reading material. This includes books, magazines, et cetera. The books can be dropped off at any Volksblad or Department of Education office across the province. The initiative was launched at the Volksblad offices in Bloemfontein last week and was graced by a high-powered delegation from the Free State Department of Education as well senior managers at Volksblad. The book collection drive will culminate with the celebration of World Book Day on 23 April. “If we can get our children to read, and especially get parents to read to their children, I know we will be able to turn this country’s literacy levels around,” Tate Makgoe, Education MEC, says. Zandile Qwati, director of General Education and Training at the department, says the department has put in place measures to address the problem areas in the schooling system. “International and regional studies demonstrated that South African learners achieve below acceptable levels in reading and writing. Low performance in annual national assessments (ANA) in First Additional Language in gr. 4 to gr. 6 and gr. 9 is a cause for concern given that English is used as the language of learning and teaching,” Qwati said. “We are happy to get involved with this initiative and will use our platforms to promote this initiative because reading is one way anyone can turn their life around and improve their circumstances,” Johanna van Eeden, Volksblad editor, says. ) Volksblad offices where the reading material can be dropped off are Bloemfontein: 64 Henry Street or 79 Nelson Mandela Drive; Welkom: The

IBL makes yet another donation } Sidwell Guduka ABOUT 60 orphaned children who attend school at Thari Ya Tshepe Intermediate School in Botshabelo, east of Bloemfontein, were all smiles last Thursday. This was after Interstate Bus Lines (IBL) had donated full school uniforms to each of them during the handing-over ceremony which was held at the school’s premises in L Section. The value of the uniforms is almost R13 000. Speaking to Express at the event, George Mokgothu, CEO of Interstate Bus Lines, said the donation was part of his company’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) projects. “We are here as Interstate Bus Lines to plant yet another seed of hope in the community of Botshabelo. We are doing this in partnership with the local organisation called Good Foundation,” Mokgothu said. “We thought it fit to donate school uniforms to these young children who are orphans and coming from child-headed families. “We are doing this to restore dignity and eliminate a stressful environment among themselves. We want to ensure that when they come to school, they come to learn like the rest of the children without worrying about not having school uniforms. So, we are priviledged to have this opportunity to come and present the uniforms to these young school kids,” he added. Mokgothu said the beneficiaries were identified by the Good Foundation, together with the teachers of the Thari Ya Tshepe Intermediate School. “At Interstate Bus Lines, we strongly believe that whatever we do in terms of community social investment it must directly benefit the beneficiaries. “In this case, they identified these kids who are in need and we thought it was right to invest in them.” Mokgothu further said that his company invested in a number of

We are stretching ourselves in so many areas,” he explained. Interstate Bus Lines has built a hall for the Emang Primary

We have a project where we transport children to the Central University of Technology (CUT) and the University of the Free State (UFS)
South Campus for extra classes on a weekly basis,” Mokgothu said proudly. Meanwhile, Mosa Monyatso (7) was one of 60 pupils who received a free school uniform. “I am very happy. I want to thank the people who bought this uniform for me. They really made my day,” said the gr. 3 learner.
Eric Leroala, the principal of the Thari Ya Tshepe Intermediate School, said he was grateful to Interstate Bus Lines for the uniforms they donated to his learners. “On behalf of the school, I would like to thank Interstate Bus Lines for the donation. Most of our learners are from poor backgrounds.”

Siwelele band will miss Leepile } Sidwell Guduka LEEPILE MAKHETHA, a member of Siwelele Sa Masele Band, passed away on Thursday. Airport Seliane, also a member of the band, says the death of Leepile Makhetha is a “profound loss” to the group and his loved ones. Makhetha died after a short illness at the National Hospital in Bloemfontein last Thursday. “His untimely passing has left his family, the group and the entire Siwelele family in shock and sadness. He was my best friend. I still can’t believe he is no more,” Seliane tells Express. A distraught Seliane has only good memories about his late friend and colleague. “He was a hardworking man, a man of great warmth and compassion. He was a giant. He was jolly. He liked to crack jokes. “Leepile and I were like biological brothers. We were always together. He will be greatly missed. Through the help of the Lord, I’m hoping to eventually come to terms with his passing,” Seliane says with tears in his eyes.
Itumeleng Makhetha, the uncle of Leepile, says the family is in a state of shock following Leepile’s sad death. “He died at around 11:00 on Thursday. He complained about stomach ache before he was admitted to the hospital seven days before his passing. He was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU),” Makhetha says. “We have accepted our loss as a family. May his soul rest in peace,” he adds. In 2007, Siwelele Sa Masele Band released a 17-track CD of their favourite songs, which carried their club through tough battles in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). The group consisted of Botha Msila, Vuyo Mrazula, Airport Seliane and Leepile Makhetha. The band still misses another original member, Bishop Meni, who passed away at the beginning of 2007. Meni was reputed to be Celtic’s number-one fan. “It was sad to lose Bishop before we released our first album. We are even sadder to lose another member of our group. “We are two men down, three

Triplets doing well } Jabulani Dlamini THE triplets Thabiso, Thabo and Mathabo are all doing just fine. Their mother, Matshilonyana Letsee, says she is very grateful for what Express readers have done for her children. Speaking to Express last week, Matshilonyana said the adorable (and heavy) triplets are doing just fine. “My husband says he wishes there was something he could do to say thank you to all those strangers who responded to
his plea for help,” Letsee said. In November last year, Sekoala Letsee, father of the triplets, came to the Express offices to ask readers for help with raising his bundles of joy. As soon as the family’s plight was published, Express readers opened their heart and wallets to donate and buy everything that the triplets needed. Donations of baby cots, prams, clothes and nappies were received from Express readers while others bought baby milk formula and additional nappies.
Paraffin price less in April THE Department of Energy informs the public of the fuel price adjustment for April. South Africa’s fuel prices are adjusted on a monthly basis, influence by international and local factors. International factors include the fact that South Africa imports both crude oil and finished products at a price set at the international level, including shipping costs. Locally, the pricing formula includes fuel levies and the Road Accident Fund levy as determined annually by the minister of Finance, the cost of transportation which results in different prices for different areas (adjusted annually) and the different prices for 93 and 95 octanes which are informed by cost of production (adjusted quarterly). Since 2008, the Incremental Inland Transport Recovery System (IITRS) levy of 3,0 cents per litre was included in the fuel price to recover the cost of transporting petroleum products by alternative modes of transport other than the pipeline from the Durban to the inland markets. The minister of Energy has repealed this levy with effect from today as a result of the commissioning of the multiproduct pipeline. This means that inland motorists
will pay 3,0 cents/litre less on the pump price. According to the minister of Energy, Dikobe Ben Martins, “the scrapping of the 3,0 cents per litre levy due to the commissioning of the multiproduct pipeline has had a positive effect on the latest fuel price adjustments. This is consistent with government’s programme to build new infrastructure that benefits South Africans.” Based on current local and international factors, the fuel prices for April in the Gauteng zone will be adjusted as follows: illuminating paraffin (wholesale) will decrease by 34,5 cents/litre and (SMNRP) will decrease by 49 cents/litre, liquefied petroleum gas (maximum retail price) will decrease by 22 cents/kilogram, diesel (0,05% sulphur) will decrease by 8,8 cents/litre and 0,005% sulphur will also decrease by 7,8 cents/litre, petrol (93 octane) will increase by 5,0 cents/litre while 95 octane will increase by 7,0 cents/litre. In other fuel pricing zones the prices will be different due to the adjustment to the transportation costs. “The decrease in the price of illuminating paraffin and LPG will benefit households that use these products, especially as winter approaches,” Martins concluded.

Keep a clear conscience } Past. Moise Mutombo Kumwimba MANY people today are actors; meaning what you see in them is not exactly what you get. In families the father, mother and even the children are all actors. Today many people can be compared to tombs; they look fine on the outside but on the inside they are full of decay. They are liars, hypocrites, cheaters, fornicators, immoral and have all sorts of evil in them. Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. Matthew 7:15. Everyone lies to their neighbour; they flatter with their lips but harbour deception in their hearts. Psalm 12:2. If your conscience glorifies God, you will be who you said you are. Many people have killed their conscience because they consistently do wrong. It is true that we are not perfect, but we should strive towards perfection, which is Jesus Christ Himself. In Genesis 4:9 we see in Cain’s answer that there was a justification of a guilty conscience. Justification of guilt conscience leads to self-righteousness and self-righteousness can never allow us to be forgiven by God. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” Such a response proved the state of his conscience. He was guilty but instead of repenting, he wanted to
hide his actions. If God did not confront him, he would have lived with a guilty conscience and never would have enjoyed God’s forgiveness. Acceptance of a guilty conscience leads to repentance. A person who rejects his guilt-stricken conscience will always feel righteous on the outside while dying on the inside. This means a polluted and guilty conscience that rejects humility before God can corrupt our communication with God. This understanding will introduce us to a spirit of sanctification by asking for forgiveness not only from God, but also from the people we have offended for the sake of our conscience. Keep your conscience clear so that you may obtain boldness in prayer before God. We pray the Holy Spirit of God will revive your conscience so that you may be aware when you do wrong and give you the spiritual willingness to run back to God and to your offenders for forgiveness, in Jesus Name. ) The New Horizon Ministry invites everyone to its service at the Joe Solomon Primary School in Heidedal every Sunday from 09:00 or contact them on 071-214-9404. Awareness created
THE Edenburg police, as well as the area’s community policing forum, recently took to the streets of Ha-Rasebei to create awareness about crime. Amongst the crimes that the door-to-door campaign was aimed at raising awareness was rape which is on the increase in the area. The campaign was also held to make the community aware of other forms of abuse such as drug,
women and child abuse and tips on how to combat and report these. Pamphlets and important contact numbers were given to the community during the walkabout and a mass community meeting was held afterwards at the Phaladiphehlo Hall. Const. Lehlohonolo Nkepane, community policing officer, told the community they should be more careful of their movements,
adding that women should not walk alone at night as they could get raped and even killed. “I advise you to stop loitering around the streets at night and learn to love thy neighbour as you love yourself. Meaning take care of each other, don’t turn a blind eye when your neighbour is being attacked. Do something to help them because no one knows who will be the criminals’ next victim,” said Nkepane.

Bidding online easy ONLINE auctions have been around for some years, especially with international websites selling anything from electronics to soft toys. As South Africans started getting comfortable with the idea of buying goods on the internet, local auction websites also started to follow suit. But why online auctions? It is very simple. Why would you post all your business documents and proposals via snail mail if you can simply use email? The communication tools with which you do business these days are completely different to those 20 years ago. The same with the auction industry. The tools that are available are being used and this opens a whole new world for the industry and those who benefit by buying assets on auction. If you have never bought assets via online auction, it might be time for you to look at the vast opportunities you are missing out on. Here are the simple steps you need to follow to take you

There should not be potholes in the streets. There should be clean, accessible water and affordable electricity for everyone. There should be efficient health care, affordable housing, good education and job opportunities for everyone. Unfortunately, it is a sad reality
that money that should be spent on the people of South Africa is being wasted and stolen. How can a school child drown in a pit toilet while a minister spends R3 million on overseas travel? How can millions of people live in squatter camps with no running water when the government wastes R75 billion in three years on cars and parties? The Congress of the People made you a promise in 2009 that they will offer a better government that will not steal money meant for the people of South Africa. EFF certain of 100% victory } Jabulani Dlamini
A CONFIDENT Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Free State leadership has declared they are a government-in-waiting and say they will secure 100% of the votes in the upcoming elections. The fledgling political party, with a strong representation from the Free State, released their list of 30 individuals who they say will be their representatives in the Free State Legislature. In a press conference in Bloemfontein last week, the party’s premier candidate, Mandisa Makhesini, and her fellow provincial central commanders said they committed themselves to serving the people of the Free State without any fear or favour. “We call on all fighters, volunteers and supporters of the EFF to unite behind this list for victory in the 2014 general elections,” Makhesini said. Apart from Makhesini, a former Free State ANC Youth League deputy chairperson, other notable names that appear on the list include former ANC Youth League Free State chairperson Kgotso Morapela, Alima Thole of the ex-political prisoners association and Chief Majara Mopeli from Qwaqwa. In a scathing attack on Premier Ace Magashule, Makhesini promised to fight corruption “perpetrated by the criminals lead by Magashule”. On nationalisation, Makhesini said they planned to make sure 61% of mines remained in government hands so that all South Africans could benefit from them. “The panic created around our talk of nationalisation is unfounded. We want to invite our white countrymen to join us because South Africa belongs to all of us,” she said. Asked how they planned to address the issue of unemployment and resuscitate the ailing Free State economy, Mojalefa ‘Lucky’ Mongale said they planned to revive closed industries in Thaba Nchu and Tshiame in Harrismith as a start. “These industries were closed because of corruption and we also need to process our own mineral resources,” said Mongale, who heads communication for the party. He said if you took out the middleman in agencies such as the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), then more money would become available for those who need it. )Follow Jabulani Dlamini on Twitter @JabulaniD15

Mandisa’s mark MANDISA MAKHESINI, the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) premier candidate for the Free State, is no stranger to the political landscape. Express spoke to this former ANC Youth League Free State deputy chairperson to gain an insight into who she is. Who is Mandisa? I am someone who is very passionate about our people and who wants to see a change in the lives of ordinary South Africans. Where are you from? I come from Welkom in the Free State, although my parents originally came from Herschel in the Eastern Cape. What will be your focus areas if you become premier? A. Fighting corruption. B. Addressing unemployment. C. Dealing with the land issue; we have to take ownership of the land. MANDISA MAKHESINI the EFF’s premier candi D. Free education, housing and date for the Free State. health care.
How do you plan to handle the economy? We have to fight against the economic imbalances created by our past. We are a rich country but the majority of our citizens is not benefitting from these riches. What does it mean for you as a woman to be given this opportunity? I am particularly happy that the organisation has assigned me as a woman for this important task as it provides an opportunity for a woman to prove we are also capable. What do you want to be your legacy? I want my children to one day have a piece of land that they can point at and say this belongs to us. This must be a reality for all our children. ) Makhesini is also a member of the EFF’s Central Command Team (CTT) nationally serving in the gender portfolio.
Premier Ace Magashule attends opening } Tladi Moloi ACE MAGASHULE, the premier of the Free State, urged the Maluti-a-Phufung Municipality to work closely with traditional leaders. He said this would boost the economy of the municipality because these leaders knew more about agriculture. Magashule spoke at the official opening of the third session of the Free State House of Traditional Leaders at the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Chambers in Qwaqwa on Thursday. “In the past year people have been making a living from vegetables and fruit in Qwaqwa. They use their hands for everything and eat what they harvest,” he said. According to him, they have a good working relationship with traditional leaders who ensured in the past they helped government in any way possible. “They always advise us. They are the link between the community and the government. We know not everyone can inform us of their problems, and they then task the traditional leaders,” he said. He said some people did not appreciate traditional leaders and that was a big mistake because those people had played their part in fighting apartheid. For the first time in history scores of people were invited to witness the opening of
the house. Olly Mlamleli, the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, promised those attending that they would invite them again in future. Ledika Moloi, chairperson of the Free State House of Traditional Leaders, said their role in government was to advise the provincial government especially regarding events in their homeland. “Our premier has just pointed out that Sotho is soon going to be the official language in the Free State and that has always been our wish. “We asked for this years ago and we are happy that it is going to happen now,” he said. Moloi said one of their responsibilities was to take care of government property because it was for the people. He said if people understood where they came from they would surely realise what traditional leaders meant. “Look at history. We never had strikes in the rural areas and that was because traditional leaders were always in contact with the community. Even now we make sure that service delivery strikes do not occur in the villages because we talk to the community and take their problems to the provincial government,” Moloi said.

New Miss SA crowned
} Sidwell Guduka
THE Miss South Africa pageant took place in Sun City Superbowl on Sunday, and the crown was snatched by Rolene Strauss. The runners-up are Eastern Cape’s Ziphozakhe Zokufa and Matlala Mokoko of Limpopo, who earned themselves a title of first princess and second princess respectively. The 21-year-old Strauss, who hails from Volksrust in Mpumalanga, is a medical student at the University of the Free State (UFS). In her Miss South Africa acceptance speech Strauss said: “Oh, how I love South Africa. I can live, speak, learn and love freely. My dreams are developed and become reality here. Our country is my pride and my purpose has and will always lie within it. Not only does the Miss South Africa title have the ability to take me places, but I will also learn from the women who walked this path before me. I am who I am today because of our country and the opportunities I have received from her generous hand. For me this will be a year of giving back; giving thanks and being a true example of the potential women and all South Africans can have in our country. “My passion for Miss South Africa and health is connected. Together with the sponsors’ initiatives, such as Cell C’s Take a
Girl Child to Work Day, which I will be putting my name to, I’d love to get different health disciplines involved and emphasise the importance of women’s health and its empowering effect on our everyday lives. We are capable of so much more when we are healthy; physically, mentally and emotionally.” For her efforts, Strauss walked away with a R120 000 cash prize, a Volvo V40 T3 and products valued at more than R1,3 million. She also received thousands of rands in cash and study bursaries to award to South Africans that she meets during her reign. Cell C is also giving her access to R200 000 to spend on random acts of kindness. “I think the new Miss South Africa is truly representative of the Rainbow Nation and we are sure she will go on to make a meaningful contribution to the lives of many South Africans as this country celebrates 20 years of democracy,” Alison McKie of Sun International said. The Miss South Africa judges were Amy Kleinhans-Curd, crowned Miss South Africa in 1992; magazine editor, poet and writer, Kojo Baffoe; TV presenter, model and cosmetics brand ambassador, Bonang Matheba; high-profile radio personality and TV presenter, Anele Mdoda, and Pnina Fenster, editor of Glamour magazine.

Honours for dealership
BARLOWORLD’S John William’s Mitsubishi Bloemfontein received triple honours when the dealership was named the Mitsubishi Dealer of the Year (Market Centre category). John William’s Mitsubishi Bloemfontein also received the awards for Best New Vehicle Department and Best Service Department in the category. Pine Pienaar and his team at the John William’s multi-dealership in Bloemfontein were recognised for their exceptional performance in 2013 at a gala function near Hartbeespoortdam last week. “John William’s Mitsubishi Bloemfontein proves yet again that strong leadership and the right people for the job are key to the performance of any dealership,” says Barloworld Motor retail executive: Motor
Franchises, Marius de Bruin. “We at Barloworld take pride in congratulating John William’s Mitsubishi with this important accolade. We are proud of their achievement and of their total commitment to the customer.” The multi-franchise dealership competes in the medium-sized dealership category, referred to by Mitsubishi as the Market Centre category. The franchise executive, Klaas Kotze, received the award on behalf of the dealership. “Pine and his team – new vehicle sales manager, Wian Bonthuyzen, service manager, Brian Botha, and their staff – are worthy recipients of this soughtafter accolade,” said Kotzé. “The sales team did extremely well in re-establishing the new Mitsubishi Triton by focusing on small fleets and single-unit
buyers. It was extremely difficult to re-enter this market after a five-year absence of a single-cab bakkie in this segment, but our team outperformed every other dealership,” said Kotzé. On the passenger car side, they also excelled in marketing the Mitsubishi ASX, an outstanding value for money product. “This product is very popular amongst women, and we focused on that with great success.” Apart from the right product at the right price, John William’s Mitsubishi also focused on customer satisfaction, which remained constant all year long. “Our CSI is much more consistent than that of our competitors thanks to the fact that we have the right people who really are loyal to their customers. They are the ones that make the difference.”
HEALTH MINISTER DR AARON MOTSOALEDI has joined forces with traditional leaders in the fight against HIV, Aids and Tuberculosis (TB). The partnership between the Department of Health and traditional leaders – which is part of the National Strategic Plan (NSP) – has culminated in the signing of the ground-breaking pledge, aimed at the renewal of the HIV, Counselling and Testing (HCT) Campaign in rural areas under traditional leaders. The NSP on HIV, STIs and TB is a 20-year vision for reversing the burden of disease from these illnesses in South Africa. It is based on four pillars, including zero new HIV and TB infections, zero new mother-to-child transmission, zero preventable death from HIV and TB, as well as zero discrimination associated with HIV, STIs and TB. During the signing ceremony on Monday, the traditional leaders, under the auspices of the South African National Aids Council (Sanac), presented a comprehensive prevention strategy which includes HCT, initiation and medical male circumcision and fighting against drug and substance abuse.
The strategy also includes awareness campaigns, demystification of myths about HIV/Aids and TB and fighting discrimination and stigmatisation. In their pledge, the traditional leaders commit to making a contribution to the achievement of the goals set out in the NSP on HIV, STIs and TB 2012 to 2016. They will also intensify their role in the HCT campaign by providing leadership and information on the importance of the campaign to their people. The traditional leaders have also committed to a strong partnership with the Department of Health and other Sanac sectors to ensure that the HCT campaign reaches and benefits more people. “We will ensure that as traditional leaders, we participate fully in all Sanac structures established to govern and monitor the HIV and Aids and TB response at sub-district, district, provincial and national levels. We sign this pledge with some joy on the news that indeed, the fight against the dual epidemics in our country has turned a corner. Our people are living longer, healthier and more productive lives than they did five years ago,” reads part of the pledge. – SAnews.gov.za

Roses in rough spot } Sidwell Guduka MAX TSHABALALA, the owner of Roses United, admits his club needs a miracle to avoid relegation from the National First Division (NFD). Clinton Larsen’s men find themselves languishing at the bottom of the log with a meagre 15 points after 25 matches. They have gone 14 matches without a single win, losing ten and drawing four of those encounters. Their last win came when they overpowered Blackburn Rovers 2-0 at the Gelvandale Stadium in Port Elizabeth on 27 November last year. “As the owner of the team I have to believe we can still do it. I still believe in the miracle. There are still 15 points to fight for, and we play some of the teams around us. We have to win all our remaining games to stay in the National First Division,” Tshabalala tells Express. “We’ll try harder to survive the drop. The battle for survival is never easy, but we are up to the task. I am positive that we will even surprise ourselves at the end of the season,” he says. “It’s not difficult to see what the problem is – we concede too many goals. Apart from (James) Madidilane, our players are inexperienced. “I sold the club to Sinki (Mnisi), but when I took it back he could not release all the regular players. Most of our players are from the Second Division and they don’t have the experience to play at this level,” he reasons. In order to try to avoid the almighty relegation scrap, the relegation-threatened side have signed goalkeeper Postnet Omony, Mokete Tsotetsi, Joseph Henyekane, Luyolo Mapolisa and Luyanda Hlongwa.
Cheetahs aim for a home win } Sidwell Guduka
ROUGH PATCH: Clinton Larsen, Roses United coach. “We brought in these players to help us avoid relegation. Their experience will be vital for us going into the next five matches.” Asked if the management have set aside incentives to motivate the players in securing their NFD status, Tshabalala answered: “Yes, we are going to give them R2 000 each in incentives for a win. I believe that would motivate the players to win the remaining five fixtures.” Tshabalala further says that Roses will not rely on other teams for favours. They trail Maluti FET College, who sits 14th on the log, with ten points. “But we will fight our own battle to the bitter end to finish in 14th position. We still have to

face Maluti and we have to beat them,” the owner says. Roses, who roped in Clinton Larsen as their head coach last month, will welcome Blackburn Rovers to the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium on Saturday at 15:00. Larsen will still be searching for his first win as Roses coach when they face the visitors. Since his appointment he has managed to collect one point out of a possible nine points. ) For more sport stories, log on to www.express-news.co.za or expresspaper.mobi.
SA women in World T20 semifinals THE Momentum Proteas women beat New Zealand’s White Ferns to qualify for the ICC Women’s World T20 semifinals for the first time. The five-wicket victory knocked the Kiwis out of the competition along with their male counterparts. South Africa are currently the only side with both teams already in the semifinal stage of the competition. This is also the Proteas women’s first victory against the White Ferns in a World Cup. New Zealand were restricted to a modest total of 114 for 8 after winning the toss and opting to bat first. The bowlers, led by Marizanne Kapp (3/23) and Dané van Niekerk (2/12), bowled some of their best spells in the tournament and their colleagues kept their fielding tight. Sophie Devine reached 40 runs, with everyone else restricted to less than Suzie Bates’s 16.
15
“I thought that our bowlers did an incredible job today,” South African captain Mignon du Preez commented after the match. “Kappie (Marizanne Kapp) and Dané (van Niekerk) as the seniors led from the front and took matters into their own hands, taking wickets just when we needed them. The rest of our bowling unit, including Suné (Luus), PJ (Sunette Loubser) and Shibby (Shabnim Ismail) were fantastic in keeping the pressure up. “I am extremely impressed with the dog fight and spirit that the team displayed. We knew that this was a make-or-break game and we put our hearts into it and I’m just really glad we gave the country something to cheer for today,” Du Preez continued. South Africa reached the required score with four balls to spare. Du Preez played a captain’s innings, scoring the only half-century of the
match to lead her side to victory. “It’s always great to be able to pitch in and play a big role for the team, just as they need it,” Du Preez said. “As a captain, you want to always do well and today was a particularly important game, so I’m really glad that I’m peaking at the right time.” Looking ahead to the semifinals which will see the Proteas play either the West Indies or England, Du Preez says her side will go about the rest of the tournament as usual. “I think the formula we have been using has worked for us so far and we’re happy to continue with things the way they are. “We obviously want to be at our very best for the next match and we have a few kinks to work out, but right now, we are just going to regroup and just for tonight, enjoy this epic and historic win,” she concluded. – Cricket SA
SATURDAY’s big match between the Toyota Cheetahs and the Chiefs is the top liner in the weekend round of Vodacom Super Rugby matches. Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00. The Chiefs played to a 34-34 draw against the Vodacom Bulls in Pretoria on Saturday, while the Cheetahs were humbled 40-30 by the Blues in New Zealand a fortnight ago. The Free Staters, who have lost all their last four fixtures on tour, had their first bye last weekend. However, they will be hoping to return to their winning ways when they face off against the visiting team in front of their own supporters. “Because this match kicks off early in the afternoon and falls in the school holiday, Free State Rugby will let kids watch the match for free. So, if you are younger than 18 years and don’t want to miss out on the action, all you need to do, is to collect a free ticket from the ticket office (Gate 5, Free State Stadium),” Ronel Pienaar, the Cheetahs manager of strategic communication, tells Express. “To add to the excitement there will be jumping castles and lots of entertainment for kids at the Toyota Kidz Tough Zone and Sparta and Weber Braai area. “The Toyota Cheetah players will be staying behind on the field after the game to meet their supporters. As usual, kids will be afforded the opportunity to play on the pitch after the game,” Pienaar says. “Sparta will be giving supporters the opportunity to
braai meat from Sparta at the Weber Braai area while Anton Botha and Francois Bouwer will provide entertainment on the Castle Deck,” she adds. There will be a Vodacom Cup curtain-raiser match between the Toyota Free State XV against Border at 12:30. Meanwhile, the Toyota Cheetahs are giving away ten double tickets to Saturday’s game. CELTIC remaining matches: vs Mamelodi Sundowns (9 April, Loftus Stadium, 19:30) vs Golden Arrows (16 April, King Zwelithini Stadium, 19:30). vs Orlando Pirates (21 April, Free State Stadium, 15:00). vs Ajax Cape Town (27 April, Free State Stadium, 15:00). vs Bidvest Wits (10 May, Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium, 15:00).
Celtic fighting for top-eight } Sidwell Guduka BLOEMFONTEIN CELTIC have to beat the stubborn Platinum Stars to revive their hopes of a top-eight finish. Phunya Sele Sele, who are lying ninth on the table with 33 points after 24 outings, face the Northwest side at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium in Botshabelo on Sunday at 15:00. The ever-improving Celtic will need more than just a draw to fight their way back into the top-eight bracket. The club drew their previous three league encounters against Amazulu, Maritzburg United and SuperSport United. Ernst Middendorp’s men last tasted a league victory when they humbled the relagationhaunted Polokwane City 2-1 in Botshabelo on 12 March. “We are playing well enough to be confident about finishing the season among the top-eight teams in the league. We dominated most of the matches that we had drawn this season. I believe we need a bit of luck to convert our chances,” John Maduka, Bloemfontein Celtic’s manager, tells Express. “We are not panicking as we believe we have what it takes to finish the season in the top half of the table. Out of the six remaining games, we are going to play four of them at home and this will give us an advantage. We are going to try and
win all the home matches,” he says. “The difference between us and the four teams ahead of us is one and two points. If we win on Sunday, then we’ll be back in the top-eight bracket. The log is changing every week. “We shall continue to play well and try not to lose games. The coach and players are working hard at training to improve our shooting. So, I am confident we will convert our chances, starting this weekend,” he adds. The Bloemfontein side has reported a clean bill of health going into the weekend’s game. Apart from the Botswana international, Mogogi Gabonamong, who has accumulated four yellow cards, coach Middendorp will be spoilt for choice. “We don’t have any injuries at the moment. Mogogi is out suspended and will not take any part on Sunday,” Muduka explains. Celtic will pin their hopes on their goal-scoring machines Gabadinho Mhango, Lerato Lamola, Lerato Manzini and Vuyani Ntanga. Stars, who are sitting fifth on the log with 35 points from 23 matches, will rely on Siphelele Mthembu, Henrico Botes, Mogakolodi Ngele and Mduduzi Nyanda for goals. ) Read more on the website at www.express-news.co.za or expresspaper.mobi.
