The event was also attended by defectors from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) bussed to Bloemfontein from all over the Free State. Meanwhile, the former Free State ANC treasurer and Economic Development MEC, Mxolisi Dukwana, was also given an olive branch by the party’s deputy chairperson and current Mangaung mayor, Thabo Manyoni. Dukwana was part of the ANC members who lead the party’s “regime change faction” which wanted to topple the current
chairperson and Free State premier, Ace Magashule. Consequently Dukwana’s contestation for Magashule’s position led to him being booted out of the Free State cabinet. Dukwana told Express he was now a “house husband” who played golf and tended to his family. He denied rumours that he had defected to the EFF and said that he was an active member of the ANC at branch level. “I was never a disgruntled member of the ANC, but I was disappointed in the way matters were handled in the running towards the ANC provincial conference,” Dukwana explained. Mokitlane said the ANC would decide where to position him following the national elections.

AT the turn of the century in 1800, the plains around Golden Gate teemed with game. In 1836 it was noted by Major Sir William Cornwallis Harris, well-known English military engineer, artist and hunter, that it sometimes seemed as if the whole landscape was one moving mass of antelope which included thousands of blesbok, zebra and black wildebeest. Unemployed still devoted to ANC } Sidwell Guduka HE may be one of thousands of unemployed residents of the Free State province, but Jerry Bless (46) of China Square, Rocklands, Bloemfontein, has vowed to vote for the African National Congress (ANC) during the upcoming national and provincial elections on 7 May. The last time Jerry had a job was when he worked in the mines about three decades ago. Since then he has been surviving on working as a hawker and is a familiar face in the streets of Bloemfontein. He sells everything from hats, facecloths , kitchen towels and sweets to rosaries. “I was retrenched from the mines in 1989 and have been battling to find employment ever since. I looked for work everywhere without any success. Then I decided to do something to feed my family. I stay with my elder brother and sister,” he tells Express. “Although many people are without jobs under the ANC government, I still believe in the organisation. I have registered for next month’s elections and will definitely be voting for the ANC because they are trying harder to make our (South African citizens) lives better. I have no reasons not to vote them into power again,” he explains. “If the ANC wins the coming elections, they should focus more on creating jobs for people of this country. They must also build houses for people who are staying in shacks. They must try to win back the trust of people who have lost their trust in the ANC,” he adds. Meanwhile, according to the national and provincial trends report released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) last year, the Free State province lost over 98 000 jobs since 2003, making it the only province with a net job loss since 2003 (a decline of 1,2%).

APPLICATIONS for special votes in this year’s national and provincial elections opened on Monday and will continue until Thursday, 17 April, between 09:00 and 17:00 at local IEC offices. Special votes will be cast on Monday, 5 May, and Tuesday, 6 May. There are two categories of special votes: 1. Home visits: Election officials will visit voters who have successfully applied for a home visit due to physical infirmity, disability or pregnancy. These home visits will be conducted on Monday, 5 May, and on Tuesday, 6 May. 2. Special voting at your registered voting station: Any voters who will be absent from the voting district where they are registered on Election Day (7 May) may apply to cast their vote early. This voting will take place at the voting stations where the voter is registered on Monday, 5 May, and Tuesday, 6 May, between 09:00 and 17:00. Applications for both categories must be made by completing a VEC 1 form (available on www.elections.org.za or at local
offices of the IEC) and must be submitted by hand to the local IEC office in the municipality responsible for the voting district where the special vote is to be cast. The forms will not be accepted at national or provincial offices and cannot be faxed, e-mailed or posted. Special-vote applicants may use a proxy to deliver the VEC 1 form to the local IEC office in the municipality where they intend to vote, but the form itself must be signed by the voters themselves. Applications for special votes will no longer be accepted at voting stations on special voting days. Only voters with pre-approved applications submitted will be able to cast a special vote. Having submitted the VEC 1 application form, voters will be informed of the outcome of their application via SMS or email. They can also check their status on the website (www.elections.org.za). Youth ready for life AUKSANO is a trauma therapy centre and is registered as a non-profit organisation at the Department of Social Development. They established Wired4Life clubs at eight different schools in Mangaung. The purpose of these clubs is to equip learners with vital life skills and leadership abilities in order to have a positive impact and influence in their families and communities. Four of these clubs went on the first Wired4Life club camp of 2014 from 7 to 9 March at On Track Adventures, Hobhouse. A total of 32 learners represented the clubs from the Dr Blok Secondary School, HTS Louis Botha, Bloemfontein South High and the Navalsig High School. The tagline for these camps is to
A u k s a n o i nv i t e s a l l learners to join the Wired4Life clubs at the schools. They are also hosting another Wired4Life camp for the public during the June holidays. Live Unafraid. The learners were challenged with their own fears and were taught practical leadership and teamwork principles. The programme was packed with activities such as kettie paintball, a
night hike with a compass, self-defence techniques, raft building, an adventurous obstacle course and a mixed water games morning on Sunday. The teams and learners were under constant scrutiny in order to determine the overall Wired4Life club winner and individual leadership winner. The club winner of the floating trophy was the Dr Blok Secondary School and the overall leadership winner was Goitseoone Nche of the HTS Louis Botha. Auksano invites all learners to join the Wired4Life clubs at the schools. They are also hosting another Wired4Life camp for the public during the June holidays. FS local contractors empowered by Eskom “IT is of the utmost importance for us to stimulate the Free State economy and empower local businesses by procuring locally, yet we often find that local contractors and suppliers often fall short at meeting basic requirements to do business with Eskom or they do not respond in the numbers that we hope for,” says Lindi Mthombeni, general manager of Eskom’s Free State Operating Unit. “A lack of knowledge about our processes and requirements also discourage small businesses from tendering to do work for Eskom.” To empower small businesses with the necessary knowledge and to assist them with information that will give them better access to opportunities, Eskom will host a contractor forum in Kroonstad on Friday. “We urge small business owners in the Free State to prioritise this meeting as it
will give you access to Eskom officers who provide developmental support to small businesses. “Eskom takes supplier development and localisation very seriously. With 517 successfully trained business owners countrywide, Eskom has found a winning formula for provincial economy stimulation,” says Mthombeni. “We are extremely proud of the 18 business owners who were trained through Eskom’s Contractor Academy and graduated in Bloemfontein last month.” A further 10 contractor employees are being trained for on line construction at Alma in Welkom and 40 contractors have been trained on a two-week intensive health and safety course. Many lives changed for better, despite challenges PHUMLA WILLIAMS, acting CEO of Goverment Communication and Information System (GCIS): FOR many, the events of 27 April 1994 will forever live in their memories. On this day millions cast their vote for the very first time to make us a free nation. Every year since then, we have celebrated Freedom Month this month to commemorate the historic occasion. This year it is of even greater significance as we celebrate 20 years of freedom. Since the birth of our democracy, we have worked to build a society based on unity and togetherness. While there are still many challenges and more to be done, conditions have fundamentally changed with each passing day. Government invites all citizens to join the celebrations this month by relating their stories on how, through working together, we have changed lives for the better. Change is evident wherever we look and advances that directly affect the lives of our people are often the most palpable. Strides made in ensuring quality health care have been immense. Before 1994, the health system was highly fragmented and structured to serve only a small portion of the population. Public health services for the majority were inadequate and health care in rural areas was neglected. We prioritised universal access to basic health care and our people are starting to live longer and healthier lives. One area that has drastically changed the lives of many is our success in the fight against HIV and Aids, and Tuberculosis (TB). Speaking at the launch of the 20 Year Review 1994–2014, Pres. Jacob Zuma said: “The country’s improved response to HIV and Aids and TB has resulted in dramatic improvements in health outcomes, such as increased life expectancy, reduced infant and child mortality rates and TB treatment outcomes.” We expanded access to HIV and TB-related health services and implemented the largest HIV counselling and testing programme in the world. Our roll-out of antiretroviral drugs has given hope to millions as they live healthy and productive lives. Our fight against TB has moved us towards active case-finding and rapid diagnosis using the latest GeneXpert technology. We are the first on the continent to roll out this technology which reduces diagnosis time from five days to two hours. Of the 4,2 million tests conducted since the introduction of the GeneXpert test, more than half were done in the country. The review noted that community
health workers had visited more than 100 000 households with known TB patients between April 2011 and March 2012. Furthermore, 160 000 people were screened; 3 000 people were diagnosed with TB and 3 200 with HIV. Premature deaths as a result of TB were significantly reduced as cure rates improved from 57,7% in 2005 to 73,8% in 2012. Defaulter rates have also decreased from 8,5% in 2007 to 6,1% in 2012. Despite these inroads, TB remains the leading cause of death. According to Statistics South Africa’s mortality and causes of death in 2011 report, 18% of people who died between the ages of 15 and 49 died of TB. The government is working with the mining sector where TB has a three times higher infection rate than in the general population. The migratory movement of mineworkers increases its spread. Recently South Africa hosted a TB in the Mining Sector Regional Ministerial Meeting to develop a co-ordinated response to TB among mine-workers in Southern Africa. Urgent action is needed as Africa is the only continent unlikely to achieve the Millennium Development Goals target of halving TB-related mortality by the end of 2015. TB affects productivity and operational costs in an industry that contributes almost 20% to our gross domestic product. Local mining companies are required to X-ray workers when hired, once a year thereafter, and when they leave their employment. Health facilities at mines are now equipped with GeneXpert technology for rapid testing and have also been upgraded to provide treatment for multidrug-resistant and extremely multidrug-resistant TB. Our fight is further boosted by an announcement of a R500 million allocation by the Global Fund to fight Aids, tuberculosis and malaria to screen 150 000 prisoners and 500 000 mine workers. TB can be cured if detected early and uninterrupted treatment is completed. Early diagnosis also means a reduction in chance of others becoming infected. Government encourages all to be tested every year. We need every South African healthy and ready to take our country towards Vision 2030.
ANC’s land redistribution plan threat to food security
MZWANDILE HLEKO, Cope Free State MPL: THE proposed ANC land redistribution plan (“Final Policy Proposals for Strengthening the Relative Rights of People Working the Land”) threatens food security and economic stability in the Free State. Agriculture makes a valuable contribution to the Free State economy and the ANC plan will result in major job losses. The ANC’s land grab plan will set South Africa on a path of economic destruction and poverty similar to Zimbabwe. Vulnerable South Africans will suffer the most, jobs will be lost, economic growth will stall, and our children
will increasingly be forced in exile to seek employment in overseas countries. Cope believes that South Africans need a government dedicated to constructive policies. We have the natural resources, skills and capital to win, but we need a better government than the current one to regain our footing. South Africans have had enough of the ANC’s “good stories”, we are yearning for sensible policies, effective service delivery and accountable leadership. Cope requests all South Africans to reject the economic recklessness of the ANC and to stand united in the demand that South Africa deserves a better government.

THE Welkom police are looking for this man (identikit) and his friend. It is in connection with a case of theft that involves two white males who allegedly filled their tank at a garage in Welkom and drove off without paying for the petrol. “On 21 February at about 08:57 a silver BMW 3 series motor vehicle with two white males arrived at a filling station in Constantia Road, Welkom. They filled the tank with petrol and drove off without paying,” Capt. Stephen Tha-keng, police spokesperson, says. “The registration number of the motor vehicle is unknown.
However, a case of theft was registered at the Welkom police. “An identikit of one of the suspects was compiled, he is tall with a chubby body, short black hair, was wearing a blue formal shirt and blue jeans, and was also wearing BMW “M3” sunglasses,” The description of another suspect is unknown. Both suspects could be between 30 to 35 yeas of age. Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects, should contact Det. Unemployment conference held THE Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) social sector will today report back on the number of job opportunities it has created over the past five years. The report will be tabled during a three-day conference attended by social sector government departments, including the Departments of Health, Basic Education, Public Works, Community Safety and Liaison as well as the Independent Development Trust. The EPWP is an important part of the government’s strategy to reduce unem-
ployment in the country. The selected theme for the conference is United in action to accelerate employment creation through EPWP social sector. The conference itself signifies the end of the EPWP Phase II – which started in April 2009 with the objective to create 4,5 million job opportunities. Of these, 750 000 were expected to be created by the social sector between 2009 and 2014. The EPWP social sector provides job opportunities to unemployed and unskilled
people through the delivery of social development and community protection services such as Early Childhood Development, Home Community-Based Care, School Nutrition Programme, Community Crime Prevention, School Mass Participation (encouraging participation in sports) and Kha Ri Gude (let us learn), a mass literacy campaign. Members of the social sector will also use the conference, importantly, to share experiences of the past five years and identify new areas of expansion that can
improve the sector’s contribution to the country’s employment targets. These inputs will inform the social sector’s action plans for the EPWP Phase III (2014 – 2019) which has an overall target of 6 million job opportunities. The minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini, will address the conference today. The conference will be held at the President Hotel in Bloemfontein from today until Friday, 11 March. The conference will start at 08:30.
The Word of God is victorious in battle } Pastor Moise Mutombo Kumwimba THERE is a constant battle between light and darkness, just as there is a constant battle between good and evil; good health against sickness and blessing against poverty. Whatever good there is in you; there is always evil fighting it. This is to show you that life is a battlefield where only the serious-minded people are victorious. By serious-minded, I mean people who cling to God’s unfailing Word. These people will surely be victorious in life, because it is the Word of God we keep in us that produces an overcoming spirit in our lives. In other words, Christians who do not keep and treasure the Word of God are losing Christians. Matthew 4:1-11: Here we see that Satan came with the Word of God to fight against Jesus because he knew where the strength and power in Christianity is found. He attacked Jesus a few times with the Word, but it is written that Jesus did not bind and lose Satan, he did not cast him out or rebuke him, but He simply fought back with the Word of God to show that we are not fighting against flesh and blood. Jesus had more than enough power and authority to bind him, but instead He demonstrated the power in the Word of God. I personally don’t know how we Christians today will overcome Satan if the Word of God is treated like the cinema where you attend when you feel like it. It is the Word of God you have treasured in you and believed in that you will speak in times of sickness and poverty. I am healed by the blood of Jesus. Your self-pity will not move God to heal you. It is the Word of God you speak with power when Satan attacks your business. The Lord will supply to all my needs. Your complaint will never help you running to the bank for more loans; because more loans equal more trouble. It is the Word of God you call when nightmares come while you are sleeping.
God is my refuge . . . screaming your mother’s name out loud will never protect you, neither will putting the Bible on your pillow; only having the Word of God rooted in your heart will protect you. Judas was close to our Lord Jesus in the physical world but far away in his spirit. That is why, after he betrayed Jesus, he could not believe that forgiveness was possible; because he did not have the Word of God in him. In fact he was the only disciple called a thief (John 12:6) and as a result he hanged himself. On the other side we see the Apostle Peter. After he had denied Jesus; the fullness of the Word he kept in him led him to humility by asking for forgiveness from God; he was not only forgiven, but also restored. Dear Christians, let’s commit ourselves to God’s Word because it is the only weapon given to us. God is never moved by anyone’s tears, but rather by his Word spoken in faith. Read your Bible, it has the power of salvation (Romans 10:9), it has the power of healing (Isaiah 53:5), it contains the power to unite broken and divided families (Matthew 18:20) and it has the power to set you free from any uncomfortable situation (Matthew 18:18). Poverty levels show decline BATHABILE DLAMINI, the minister of Social Development, says government has made an important contribution to overcoming the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality. Statistics South Africa released the Poverty Trends Report (2006-’11) last Thursday, which showed that poverty levels have dropped since 2006, reaching 45,5% in 2011 when applying the upperbound poverty line. The country has a set of three national poverty lines, namely the food poverty line (FPL); the lower-bound poverty line (LBPL) and the upper-bound poverty line (UBPL), which are used to measure poverty. The FPL is the level of consumption below which people are unable to buy enough food to provide them with an adequate diet. The LBPL includes non-food items, but
requires that individuals sacrifice food in order to obtain these, while individuals at the UBPL can purchase both adequate food and non-food items. Addressing the media on Monday during a post-State of the Nation Address (SONA) Social Protection and Community Development Cluster briefing, Dlamini said interventions such as increasing the number of grant beneficiaries, rolling out the food and nutrition security campaign and the War on Poverty Campaign were bearing fruit. Dlamini said that today, the majority of South Africans, notably the most vulnerable, had access to basic services such as housing, water, sanitation, electricity and social security, which were government’s most effective poverty-alleviation interventions. “This democratic government inherited a
divided nation, with high poverty levels and inequitable distribution of income. “In 1994, government started transforming policies and programmes from a racially-based welfare system of apartheid, to the one that is now inclusive of all people. “This deliberate agenda to transform the social protection framework has contributed to equitable access to basic services and community-based programmes. Looking at the significant political and socio-economic strides we have made since 1994, indeed we have a good story to tell,” Dlamini said. Expansion of social security coverage Since 1994, the number of grant beneficiaries has increased from 2,7 million people to more than 16 million people by 2013. Altogether 11 million of these are children, while more than 2,8 million are older
persons. Another achievement was the extension of the Child Support Grant until the age of 18. In an attempt to ensure that poor and vulnerable households have access to food, government has rolled out the campaign on food and nutrition security. Through these interventions, support has been given to small-scale farmers to boost their productive capacity. “As part of the War on Poverty Campaign, the department has been able to create profiles of households in poverty and to make interventions at household and community levels. “The provision of immediate poverty relief in the form of food parcels and soup kitchens or nutritional centres continues to provide relief to households,” Dlamini said. – SAnews.gov.za

Knights bid farewell to players AND so the Chevrolet Knights ended the official 2013-’14 cricket season. Their last Sunfoil Series four-day match was played at Chevrolet Park on Sunday, and the Free State side ended in second place and scooped R600 000 as their match against the Sunfoil Dolphins ended in a draw. Not only was this the end to another challenging cricket season, but sadly the team also bid farewell to local cricket legends such as Nicky Boje, Johan van der Wath, Ryan McLaren and Dean Elgar. Boje, an all-rounder, was born in Bloemfontein and also attended Grey College in the city, played 43 tests and 115 one day internationals (ODIs). But his roots were and will always be with the Chevrolet Knights. His international cricket career began in 1995 against Zimbabwe and in 2006 he announced his retirement from international cricket to concentrate on his domestic career with the Eagles – this is where his roots were formed. He ends his cricket career for the Knights franchise with 795 matches played and continues his passion for the sport where he heads-up the Free State Cricket Union Cricket Academy. Meanwhile, Van der Wath, also an all-rounder, has been playing cricket in the Free State since 1997. Although he never played test cricket, he was a regular in the Protea one-day side between 2006 and 2007 playing ten ODIs and also eight international T20 matches. He also played two seasons with the IPL before

We want to
thank them for their massive contributions to this team over the years, their match-winning performances will never be forgotten and neither their qualities as real team mates,” the coach adds. On the other hand, Johan van Heerden, CEO of the Chevrolet Knights, says it is always sad when players come to the end of their contract with his franchise. “To both Nicky and Johan, we thank you for your fantastic service rendered. You assisted the Eagles/Knights to blossom during your involvement. You would be dearly missed and we wish you the best for your future endeavours. “Ryan and Dean are also leaving to further their careers at different franchises. “Thank you for your efforts in making the Knights such a competitive side. We will miss you. Good luck with the rest of your careers and we will be watching you with keen anticipation,” Van Heerden says. “Though we bid them farewell, we know all these sporting legends will surely leave behind a legacy that will guide young cricketers towards fulfilling their dreams. We wish them all the best for the future and it was an absolute honour producing these talent and seeing them evolve into great sports stars. “To all our loyal cricket supporters and sponsors, we thank you for your support throughout this season and we are confident that the lessons learned in this season will assist in producing better and consistent performances in the seasons to come,” the CEO concludes.

JOEL MOGOROSI insists his Bloemfontein Celtic side do not have revenge on their minds ahead of their highly-anticipated Absa Premiership clash against Mamelodi Sundowns. The two giants of South African football square off at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria tonight at 19:30. The Brazilians have beaten Phunya Sele Sele twice this season and they will be hoping to make it three out of three wins over Celtic. “Obviously we want to do better against them this time, but we are not focusing too much on revenge. It’s about us putting in a really big performance today to hopefully win this match to consolidate our position on the log,” Mogorosi tells Express. In their last ten meetings, Sundowns have claimed six wins over Celtic while the Free Staters have only won one of those fixtures, with three outings ending in a draw. “History will count for nothing tonight. It will be a different ball game altogether. We are going there to fight harder for three points at stake. Winning this match would mean a lot to us as a group of players as we want to finish among the top-eight teams in the league and, of course,
qualify for the MTN 8 competition next season,” he says. Sundowns registered their sixth successive league match when they defeated Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at the FNB Stadium last Saturday, while Celtic stretched their unbeaten streak in the league to seven matches with a 1-0 win over Platinum Stars on Sunday. Siwelele’s solitary goal was netted by Mogorosi who gave a Man of the Match performance on the day. It was his fifth goal of the season. “It is always nice to get your name on the score sheet, so I’m very happy about the goal. Credit to my teammates, they have always supported me even when I’m missing chances. They always tell me to be patient in front of goals,” he says. Meanwhile, Celtic will battle it out against Bidvest Wits in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal game at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium on Sunday at 15:00. “Our focus is on Sundowns. We will only shift it to Wits after tonight’s match. But all I can say, is that as much as we want to do well in the league we also want to do exellently in cup games,” Mogorosi says.
