Road now safer and user-friendly } Sidwell Guduka BUTANA KOMPHELA, the MEC for Police, Roads and Transport in the Free State, officially opened the R295 million road in Ventersburg. Sindisiwe Chikunga, the deputy minister of Transport, Nazir Alli, CEO of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral), Mathabo Leeto, the executive mayor of the Lejweleputswa District Municipality, and Kompela cut the ribbon to mark the opening of the N1 Ventersburg intersection last Tuesday. Speaking at the official opening of the realigned Ventersburg road, Kompela said: “We are happy to be officially opening this road today. The existing road was unsafe and deteriorating fast because of the increased traffic volumes of even higher than 6 000 vehicles per day.” The MEC added that the new road had created job opportunities for the local people. “The project created a total of 387 job opportunities of which 309 were local people at a value of R31,6 million. Those who were fortunate enough to be employed through the project will tell you that their lives were changed for the better. Some will tell you that the basic need of putting bread on the table was a pipe dream until government rolled out this project,” he said. Komphela thanked road users for their patience during the construction period that took 30 months. “It is not easy to keep one’s calm if you are in a hurry and encounter stop-and-go points and road repairs. A project of this magnitude can only be successful if everyone gives their support.” Meanwhile, Chikunga said she believed the new road would help to reduce road accidents in the area. “The old road exposed residents to

accidents as they had to cross the busy road when they went from the residence side to the business side. This road will definitely safe lives. We also believe that it will attract investors. “Our message to locals and South Africans is that it cost government a lot of money to construct this road, and to maintain it. So, we urge them not to damage roads if they are unhappy about service delivery.” As part of the opening of the new road, the Department of Police, Roads and Transport had two massive roadblocks on the day – the one was between Kroonstad and Ventersburg, while the other was between Ventersburg and Winburg.

ENTERTAINMENT GALORE: From tomorrow parents and children will be having a lot of fun at the Bloem Show.

IT’S that time of year again: The Bloem Show kicks off in fine style tomorrow, with a vast array of activities for the entire family. This year’s event has been themed Bloemen Lekke – and it promises to be bigger and better than the previous editions. Speaking at the launch of the 2014 Bloem Show last Wednesday, Elmarie Prinsloo, CEO of the Bloem Show, said it was all systems go for this edition of the much-anticipated show. “The show will be unique this year, as eight of the ten days fall either on a weekend or will be school holidays. So, we urge parents to bring their children to the show to have fun,” Prinsloo said. “Good news is that even though bread, milk and petrol prices have increased, the entrance fee for Bloem Show remains the same as last year. Tickets cost R60 for adults, while learners, pensioners and children under 12 years pay R20. Children under six years will gain free entrance to the show.” Prinsloo further explained that they would be giving some discount to visitors. “A R5 discount will be given to visitors who enter the Bloem Show through Gate 10 in Monument Road. “On 24 April it is half-price day for all students who produce their student cards at the entrance gates. Three days later it’s a family day and, therefore, all visitors get R10 discount on their admission fees. Children aged between six and 11 years will get a free ticket to the Fun Park.” There will be another half-price day on 29 April for all the visitors. “During the half-price days visitors can enjoy unlimited rides from when the gates open in the morning until 20:00. However, this offer excludes rides on bumping cars and quad bikes,” Prinsloo pointed out. The show will run from tomorrow until 3 May at the Bloemfontein Showgrounds. Gates will be open between 09:00 and 21:00. For more information and the line-up, contact the Bloem Show office on 051-448-9894 or visit www.bloemshow.co.za.

Digital learning centre donated TOGETHER with the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory and Breadline Africa, Via Afrika, one of South Africa’s leading publishers of educational materials, has launched its national Digital Learning Centre Initiative at the Ithemeleng Primary School in Reddersburg. Breadline Africa is a Cape Town-based non-governmental organisation that specialises in converting old shipping containers and recycling them for essential community purposes, and the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory is the home of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The two organisations partnered just over four years ago to roll out library containers at some of the most underprivileged schools in South Africa. The latest library is the 40th to be opened as a result of the partnership, which relies on corporate funding for its success. Each library costs on average R280 000 to renovate and install, including the provision for books, librarian training and a complete upcycled structure. With Via Afrika’s involvement, the libraries are being turned into Digital Learning Centres. The Via Afrika Digital Learning Centre initiative will see each library being supplied with 15 first-class Android tablet devices. Currently, the initiative is being rolled out in three schools in Mpumalanga, the Free State and Limpopo. The tablets are packed with the latest educational programmes, applications, electronic textbooks and tools developed by Via Afrika. The first Digital Education Centre handover at the Ithemeleng Primary School was attended by community leaders and representatives of the Free State’s Department of Education. During her speech at the handover Christina Watson, the CEO of Via Afrika Publishers, said the publishing house was aware that it took more than the desire to learn to create success. “The right tools are non-negotiable in today’s technology-driven world. This is why Via Afrika decided to embark on a

roll-out of the Digital Education Centres. The centres will not only provide wonderful books – filled with adventure, foreign lands, make-believe worlds, the gift of knowledge in languages, Geography, Art, Science and Maths – but will also contain technology filled with electronic textbooks. “The electronic textbooks will ensure that learners know how to interact with modern technology and also how to demonstrate their knowledge using technological tools.” Speaking on the current education landscape, Watson also noted that we live in a world filled with an almost endless amount of information and ever increasing technology. “Children must be able to use technology to be competitive in the workplace and to

‘Children must be able to use technology to be competitive in the workplace and to get jobs after they leave school.’ – Christina Watson get jobs after they leave school. “At Via Afrika, we don’t believe in arriving, handing over these resources and then just walking away. We’ve undertaken to furnish the Digital Education Centres with free wi-fi and ongoing training for the schools’ staff in the years to come. “The libraries help foster a love of reading and gives the opportunity to children, many of whom hardly ever see a book, to come into contact with picture and story books,” said Jade Orgill, project

manager for Breadline Africa, about the ongoing partnership between Breadline Africa and the Centre of Memory. “Literacy and the right to education is a human right. Our partnership with the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory gives children an equal chance in life by helping them become confident and enthusiastic readers and by giving them the means to learn. Sadly, this is not the case in many schools across the country,” added Tim Smith, the director of Breadline Africa.

Peace found in God’s presence } Past. Moise Mutombo Kumwimba GOD’s presence is the only light that has enough power to expel every form of darkness from our lives. The presence of God is stronger than any mineral the earth can ever produce or contain. God’s presence is warmer than any sun the face of the earth has ever felt either in winter or summer. Walk in the presence of God and you will overcome the world. 1 Corinthians 10:13 reveals that there is an invisible protection surrounding the activities of those who truly walk in the presence of the true living God. Therefore, whatever happens to us can only be what God has allowed, and if God has allowed it, surely it will never destroy us but will rather give us strength and more faith to dwell in God’s presence. The world we live in is a

cruel world and the only security Christians have is the presence of God. These messages are preached in many places today, yet many Christians run to God only in times of need and they look to God’s hand rather than his presence. In Exodus 33:15 we read that Moses said without the presence of God it was impossible to possess the promised land although it was the divine plan of God for their lives. Moses knew the only key to their future was found in God’s presence. It shows Moses’ heart. We know it was God’s will for Moses to be knowledgeable in the Egyptian culture for the future benefit of God’s people. But when the time came to practise what he had learnt, he

refused by saying God’s presence was all he needed. This is an indication to why many Christians today do not have the ability to possess what God predestined for them. They believe it is is possible to accomplish great things without God, forgetting that true victory can only be obtained in the presence of God. Any victory obtained outside Christ will never stand the test of time. Dear Christian, let us learn to depend upon God’s presence, since He is the source of every true joy. Christians who do not walk in the presence of God, are equal to those who are serving small and dead gods. For us Christians to overcome this world, the secret is to walk in God’s presence. The New Horizon Ministry at the Joe Solomon Primary School in Heidedal invites everyone to its service every Sunday from 09:00. Send prayer requests to 071-214-9404.

Church invites all to super service

THE Christ Embassy Church in Bloemfontein invites community members to attend a Super Sunday Service at the church in East Burger Street, opposite Protea Hotel Central, on Sunday. Super Sunday is one of the most memorable services on the ministry’s calendar. The Super Sunday Service coincides with the celebration of Freedom Day in South Africa – the Christ Embassy Church believes that complete and wholesome freedom can be attained only through the Word of God. The theme of the year for the church is The Year of Greatness. “We have faith that through the Super Sunday Service many will discover their greatness in every area of their life which was barren before,” says pastors Precious and Francis Boayke. During the Super Sunday Service healing and miracles are expected to take place. The church guarantees that the life of those who attend the

service will never be the same. The church expects about 1 500 congregants to attend the service which starts at 09:00. The church was founded by the highly respected Past. How to vote in election SOUTH AFRICA will hold its fifth democratic national and provincial elections on 7 May. The 2014 national elections hold a special significance as South Africans born after the first democratic elections in 1994 are eligible to vote for the first time. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) stressed that everyone involved in the elections, including all registered political parties and candidates, were expected to abide by the Electoral Code of Conduct. The purpose of the code is to promote free and fair elections, including the political tolerance, free campaigning and open public debate. The IEC announced that there are 22 263 voting districts and stations, and approximately 212 000 electoral staff members were recruited and are being trained for the election. Just over 26 000 South Africans have successfully applied to vote abroad, 29 political parties will contest the election to the National Assembly and there were 196 registered political parties (national and provincial) as on 6 March. The cut-off date for appeals against decisions of the IEC was 10 April, 15 April was the cut-off date for deciding appeals and notifying parties by the Electoral Court, while yesterday certificates were issued to candidates on the final list of candidates. Voting overseas South African citizens residing outside the country and who are registered to vote will also have an opportunity to cast their ballot on 30 April. They can vote at any of South Africa’s 124 embassies, high commissions or consulates-general located in 108 countries. On 5 and 6 May special votes will be cast. On election day 117 home affairs offices will also be open for the collection of ID books, ID smart cards and temporary identity certificates. Who may vote? To be eligible to vote, you need to be a South African citizen and registered to vote, at least 18 years old on the day of proclamation, and in possession of a green bar-coded ID book, ID smart card or temporary identity certificate. To find out if you are registered or where you will vote, send your ID number per SMS to 32810 (SMS costs R1). Once registered, you stay on the voters’ roll for all future elections – you will not have to register again unless you move to another voting district.

To find out which voting station you’re registered at, please check your voter registration status online or SMS your ID number to 32810. Your local municipal electoral officer or provincial IEC office (voting station queries) can also help. The national IEC helpline number is 0800 11 8000 if you have any voting station queries. The IEC is also on social media with registration queries: Facebook (IECSouthAfrica) or Twitter (@IECSouthAfrica). Help is also available at voter education non-governmental organisations or your organisation or political party. If you have problems regarding your ID, visit your regional Home Affairs office or call them on their toll-free hotline number at 0800-60-11-90. The process On election day, voting will take place from 07:00 to 21:00. The voting process steps will be the same as in previous national and provincial elections where you show your ID document, the voting officer checks and scans the barcode of your ID book, the voting officer checks to see if your name is on the voters’ roll (the section of the voters’ roll for your voting district) and your hands are checked to see if they have been marked already (in other words, if you have voted already). Your name is then crossed off the voters’ roll (the section of the voters’ roll for your voting district). For the 2014 elections, the full voters’ roll will also be available in electronic format on the bar-code scanner devices at each voting station in case there are disputes about the right of anyone to vote in that voting district. Your left thumb will be marked with visible indelible ink to make sure that you do not vote again in the 2014 elections. An official stamp is put on the back of your ballot papers. You have one ballot paper for the national elections and one ballot paper for the provincial elections. You go into the voting booth and make a cross for one party on each of the ballot papers. You can ask for help from a voting officer if you are not sure how to vote. You fold the ballot papers and put the national one into the national ballot box and the provincial one into the provincial ballot box. A voting officer will check to see that the ballot papers have the official stamps on the back before they are put into the boxes.

Blood levels low due to holidays THE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is experiencing yet another difficult time with regards to blood collections. Almost 40% of blood collected comes from schools and universities and due to the holidays the SANBS is unable to host these blood drives. This, together with many people who also take a break, impact the blood stock levels significantly, the SANBS said in a press release. Currently, the blood stock at a national level is 2,7 days and in

the Free State and Northern Cape province it is 3,4 days. “The SANBS needs to maintain a stock level of 5 days at all times by collecting 3 000 units of blood per day to meet the demands of the thousands of patients who are reliant on blood transfusions for their survival,” Vanessa Raju, communication manager of the SANBS, said. The organisation is appealing to members of the public who meet the minimum blood donor requirements, especially blood

donors who may have missed a blood donation, to help boost supplies by committing to donating blood. In order to become a blood donor you must weigh at least 50 kg, be between the ages of 16 and 65, lead a safe sexual lifestyle, be in general good health, and consider your blood safe for transfusion to a patient. For more information, call 0800-11-90-31, send an email to customerservice@sanbs.org.za, or visit www.sanbs.org. za.

Entries are now open for the Nedbank Ke Yona Talent Search

} Sidwell Guduka

THE Nedbank Cup’s Ke Yona Talent Search is back again this year. The 32-team competition, which is currently in the semifinals stage, has become one of the most exciting football tournaments in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). Last year, the tournament organisers introduced a nationwide talent search campaign to select a football team consisting of 18 players – and this year the project continues. On Monday 28 April, Free State players aspiring to become South Africa’s next big football stars will converge on the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium in Botshabelo to undergo trials. This will be their opportunity to impress the Ke Yona Team Search selectors. With over 48 000 entries in the inaugural edition of the Nedbank Ke Yona Team Search, this year’s edition is set to be even bigger and better as the quest to discover the cream of the crop of South African football has officially begun. A total of 48 players will be selected and eventually trimmed down to the final squad that will be the 2014 Nedbank Ke Yona team to face the 2014 Nedbank Cup champions. The first try-out was held at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo, on Easter Monday. ‘My target is simple: to score more goals than any other player in the PSL. If I achieved that, I would be the happiest player in the l e a g u e .’ – G a b a d i n h o Mhango

Injuries plague team THE Cheetahs are hoping to have two key players available for their Super Rugby clash against the Stormers in Bloemfontein on Saturday. According to the Volksblad website, flyhalf Johan Goosen (concussion) and flank Lappies Labuschagné (groin) could be ready to face the Capetonians. Both missed last week’s match against the Sharks after picking up injuries against the Crusaders a

fortnight ago. Assistant coach Hawies Fourie said Labuschagné would undergo a scan while Goosen would need to pass a concussion test later in the week. Prop Coenie Oosthuizen (neck) will remain sidelined, as will lock Lood de Jager, who broke his finger in the 8-19 loss in Durban at the weekend. Saturday’s clash at the Free State Stadium kicks off at 17:05.

Rugby tickets up for grabs TOYOTA, in conjunction with Express, is giving away ten sets of double tickets to lucky readers to attend a Vodacom Super Rugby match between the Toyota Cheetahs and DHL Stormers. The match will be played at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday at 17:05. To enter the competition, visit www.expressnews.co.za.

In-form Mhango top contender for prize } Sidwell Guduka GABADINHO MHANGO, Bloemfontein Celtic hitman, continued his scoring form when his side humbled Orlando Pirates 1-0 in an Absa Premiership match played in the Free State Stadium on Monday. Now the Malawi international player is on course to be a strong contender for the PSL top-scorer award. He has scored nine league goals so far this season, one goal less than Bernard Parker of Kaizer Chiefs. Parker is on top of the scoring charts with his ten goals. With just two matches remaining for Celtic before they wrap up their campaign, Mhango needs to find the back of the net more than twice to increase his chances to become the leading Premier League goalscorer in a 30-game Premier League season – that despite missing one league game due to suspension.

“I would be lying if I said I did not want to be top of the goal charts come the end of the season. “As a goal-scorer and, like all strikers, I set myself targets at the beginning of the season. My target is simple: to score more goals than any other player in the PSL. “If I achieved that, I would be the happiest player in the league,” Mhango tells Express. “Remember, this is my maiden season in the PSL and already I have made my mark in terms of scoring goals. I am happy with the way my season has been so far. “I need to score some more goals in the remaining two league matches to increase my chances of being a top-scorer,” he says. However, the 24year-old says he will not be selfish in the club’s remaining matches at home against Ajax Cape Town and Bidvest Wits. “The fact that I want to end the

league season as a top-scorer will not cause me to become selfish in front of goals. “If my teammate is in a good scoring position, I will play the ball to him instead of going for glory. “I believe in team

work,” he explains. Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs, who are challenging for a league title, have four matches remaining – and Parker would also try to score a few goals before the season ends. Phunya Sele Sele welcome Ajax Cape

Town to the Free State Stadium on Sunday. The team will then play their last game of the season against Bidvest Wits in the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium on 10 May. Both matches will kick off at 15:00.
