Nepotism claim haunts Kopane

} Selloane Khalane THE Democratic Alliance (DA) Free State leader, Patricia Kopane, has been accused of nepotism by disgruntled party members after her father, James Lethuka, was listed as one of the party’s five members heading to the Free State legislature. Lethuka is one of the DA members heading to legislature in the new term, which will commence in June. Kopane told Express she could not comment on the matter and referred the newspaper to the party’s Free State portfolio committee chairperson, Annelie Lotriet. Lotriet said Lethuka went through an intensive candidate’s process before he was given the seat. According to Lotriet, candidates write a series of tests and undergo interviews during assessments. Lotriet dismissed the allegations of nepotism levelled against Kopane and said that it was not strange for family members to pursue politics. “Lethuka made himself available and went through the process just like anybody else,” Lotriet said. On Saturday, the ANC Free State chairperson, Premier

Ace Magashule, told masses at the Mangaung Outdoor Sports Centre he was happy that the party retained the 22 seats in the Free State legislature. Magashule was addressing scores of people who had gathered there to celebrate the party’s victory in the fifth democratic elections. Magashule told people while President Jacob Zuma was slaughtering cows, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema, was slaughtering chickens for the celebrations. “I want to see how they are going to deliver those big promises, like doubling the pension grants when they are the ruling party,” said Magashule. Magashule boldly told the masses the ANC would rule for the next 100 years. The EFF will have two seats in the provincial legislature, which will be occupied by the party’s premier candidate Mandisa Makhesini and Willie Tshabalala. The Cope provincial secretary, Mzwandile Hleko, said although his party had failed to secure seats in the legislature, the party still has 27 councillors across the province. “We are going to work very hard in the upcoming elections,” said Hleko. The Freedom Front Plus provincial leader, Wouter Wessels, told Express he was happy his party secured its seat in the legislature.

PATRICIA KOPANE

WOUTER WESSELS will represent the Vryheidsfront plus.

ROY JANKIEL SOHN, David van Vuuren, Leona Kleynhans, James Lethuka and Marie ta Pittaway will rep resent the DA in the Free State legisla ture.

THE EFF will be represented by Mandisa Makhesini and Willie Tshabalala.

THE ANC in the legislature will be represented by Free State chairperson, Ace Magashule, Sisi Mabe, Tate Makgoe, Math abo Leeto, Butana Khompela, Sisi Ntombela, Oupa Khoa bane, Mamiki Qabathe, Sam Mashinini, Olli Mlamleli, Mose benzi Zwane, Sarah Moleleki, Isaak Mbalo, Nombulelo Map ena, Thabo Meeko, Elzabe Rockman, Benny Malakoane, Patricia Mahasa, Neels Van Rooyen, Kediinametse Sechoaro and Dora Kotzee.

NEWS

Words spoken in hope IN the aftermath of the just-concluded 2014 national elections, Express journalist Tshenolo Meruti takes a look at what some of the leaders of

South Africa’s biggest political parties past and present had to say in the run-up to and after the elections over the past 20 years.

JULIUS MALEMA: “We don’t want 20 years in government, we are only asking for 5 years, if we don’t deliver, fire us. Show us the door and say we want hard workers.” – May 2014 Photo: Theana Breugem

HELEN ZILLE: “The ANC of today is not Nelson Mandela’s ANC.” – 23 February 2014. “I think it’s a lesson for her (Dr Mamphela Ramphele) in politics, I offered her the world, she wanted the universe and now she ended up with a shack in Pofadder.” – 11 May 2014 Photo: Jaco Marais

DR MAMPHELA RAMPHELE: “There are millions of South Africans who will never vote for the DA, but they want a home, which Agang SA will give them.”

MOSIUOA LEKOTA: “We have no money. We are in dire straits. We’re struggling, but we are resolute. Cope will win this election with human capital.” Mosiuoa Lekota – February 2014 Photo: Felix Dlangamandla

THABO MBEKI: “The people have spoken. The people have said unequivocally: The ANC leads! In their millions, and without equivocation, without hesitation, the people of South Africa have renewed the mandate of the ANC to govern our country.” – 3 June 1999 Photo: Nelius Rademan

CHIEF MANGOSUTHU BUTHELEZI: “It starts on university campuses, with thinkers and doers, with people of passion and action. It starts with your vote.” – 2014 Photo: SABC

NELSON MANDELA: “We are starting a new era of hope, reconciliation and nation building. Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another and suffer the indignity of being the skunk of the world. I cherish the idea of a new South Africa where all South Africans are equal and work together to bring about security, peace and democracy in our country. I sincerely hope that the mass media will use its powerful position to ensure that democracy is installed in this country.” – 27 April 1994 Photo: Nardus Engelbrecht

JACOB ZUMA:“The ANC will rule South Africa until Jesus comes back.” – 2004. “We think 7 May will go well. We think the ANC will win it overwhelmingly. We are confident and happy.” – 5 May 2014. Photo: City Press

EFF takes two seats in legislature

} Tshenolo Meruti THE ANC secured 69,85% of the 1 029 297 total votes cast in the Free State. In second place is the DA with 16,23% or 164 672 votes of the total valid votes cast. There were 1 449 448 registered voters in the Free State for the 2014 national elections. The ANC remains the ruling party with 22 seats in the legislature while the DA reclaims its position as the official opposition in the legislature with 5 seats. Newcomers, the EFF, are now the third biggest party in the province with 2 seats in the Free State legislature having secured 8,15% of the votes or 82 674 valid votes. Former opposition party Congress of the People (COPE) lost the 4 seats it once had in the Free State Legislature.

BIG LOSERS: Mosiuoa Lekota was given a hat to eat after promising to do so if his party performed poor ly in the elec tions. The party shed 27 seats in the national as sembly and will be represented by 3 members in the fifth demo cratic parlia ment, which is down from 30 members in the 2009 national elections. Company reaches out with project } Sidwell Guduka SOUTH AFRICAN EXPRESS AIRWAYS is flying very low these days. The airline’s generosity has seen the company establish an exciting national project called SA Express Inter-waste. Through this project, SA Express collects bottle caps and bread tags in an effort to promote recycling in South Africa. “We started this project a while ago. Our main purpose is to promote recycling by collecting unwanted bottle caps and bread tags,” Jacques Beck, manager of SA Express Airways in Bloemfontein, tells Express. “The whole purpose of this project is to teach people about recycling as we recycle those items after collecting them. We have partnered with a Johannesburg-based recycling company in this project. That company gives us a wheelchair for every 1 000 caps and tags we give them,” he explains. At this stage, his company has collected six wheelchairs which they will donate to people who need them. “As a company we have nominated schools in different provinces to which we will handover those wheelchairs. The good thing is every member of our staff is involved in this project,” Beck says. The first of those six wheelchairs was handed over to Henrik Hattingh, a gr. 11 pupil at the Martie du Plessis School in Bloemfontein, on Friday. “The reason we chose Martie du Plessis is because most of their learners are in need of wheelchairs. We are happy to be the first airport to receive a wheelchair because Bloemfontein collected the most number of caps and tags. We hope this wheelchair will make life easier for Henrik,” says Beck. An excited Henrik says: “I am really happy to receive this wheelchair. I don’t have the right words to explain how I feel about it, but it will make my life much easier. I want

We’ll try to collect as many of them as possible so that we can get another wheelchair that we can donate to a school.”

He believes that it would be great if the public could also come to the party and assist them in collecting more caps and tags. “It would be really nice to get the public involved with the project. People who are interested in assisting us to collect caps and tags can call the Bram Fischer International Airport in Bloemfontein for more details.”

Meanwhile, Marna Britz, the physiotherapist at Martie du Plessis, welcomed the wheelchair donation her school received from SA Express. “We are happy as a school. It is good to see there are companies who care about disabled people in our society.” The Bram Fischer International Airport’s contact number is 051-407-2200.

Young voter finally gets his chance } Sidwell Guduka MOJALEFA MOSESE was extremely excited after having cast his first democratic vote during last Wednesday’s general elections. The 22-year-old, who lives in Phase 7, Bloemfontein, was one of millions of born frees who voted for the first time in their lives in the democratic elections. Mosese travelled to the voting station riding his bicycle and, judging by his attire and flags he had erected on the bicycle, it was crystal clear which political party he was going to vote for on the day. “I am very happy. I have been waiting for this day for a very long time. It is a great feeling that I had cast my vote today. I would feel terrible if I hadn’t exercise my right,” Mosese told Express. The young man, who works at a carwash in the Free State capital, feels that voting should be compulsory for all South Africans. “We have all been given this right and it is completely irresponsible not to utilise it. Every vote matters and if you don’t vote you have no right to complain. I feel that each and every citizen of the country should exercised their right to vote in the future. Voting is the biggest and easiest step one can take in the democratic process,” he says. Asked which political movement he had voted for, Mosese proudly said: “It’s obvious, I voted for the ANC. I want them to remain in power so that they can continue to improve the lives of the black people. I’m positive they will win these elections.” Mosese said he had tried to register to vote in 1999, but had to

OVER THE MOON: Mojalefa Mosese. turn back because he was still under age. “If I had been eligible to vote in the last elections, I would have done so. I understood the reason given to me for being ineligible to vote then. I was disappointed though,” he remembered. Meanwhile, a record number of

29 political parties contested the 2014 polls, 13 of which received sufficient votes for representation in the National Assembly. The ANC secured 62,15% and 249 seats while the DA won 89 seats with 22,23%, followed by Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) with 25 seats and

6,35% of the vote. The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) received 10 seats and 2,40%, the National Freedom Party (NFP) 6 seats with 1,57%, while the Freedom Front Plus (FFP) and United Democratic Movement (UDM) both attained four seats. The Congress of the People

(Cope), African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) and the African Independent Congress (AIC) won three seats each. AgangSA won two seats, and the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) and the African People’s Convention (APC) won one seat each.

Tributes pour in } Teboho Setena TRIBUTES and condolences have been pouring in for the prominent stalwart sports administrator Dick Frank Nkuna who died last Saturday at age 69. Nkuna was a well-known figure in sport in the Free State, having served both as a football and boxing administrator. Nkuna, who battled ill health for a lengthy period, served in football as the manager of Welkom Real Hearts and the now defunct Welkom Stars. He also served as an executive member of the South African Football Association (Safa) holding the influential position of president. At the time of his death, Nkuna held the powerful position of the manager of Boxing South Africa in the Free State. He will be remembered as someone who was passionate about sport. “The country has lost a man who dedicated his life to the

DICK NKUNA game of football,” said Safa president Danny Jordaan. Nkuna was a Safa NEC member from 1995 to 2003. Nkuna leaves behind four children, his wife, Emily, four siblings and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held today at the Church of Grace at 13:00. The funeral will be held on Friday starting at 08:00, also at the Church of Grace. For information members of the public may call 057-397-1891.

Many gather in prayer “SOUTH AFRICA, we love you. Our beautiful land, lets show the whole world we can bring peace in our land.” This is the opening line of a peace song that was sung in 1994 composed by Chicco Twala urging South African citizens to unite. It was again a prayer to God to guide South Africans. As the nation celebrates 20 years of democracy this year, it was again time to vote in the president for the new term. South Africans had been praying for the nation in preparation for the recently held elections. On 6 May several churches in Bloemfontein gathered at the Empowerment International Ministries Church, under the leadership of Pastor MB Kareli to pray for peaceful elections and the future of South Africa as the new term starts. It was an hour of fervent prayer to God – people were pouring out their hearts to God on what they wanted to see happening in South Africa. ) South Africa held its fifth democratic national elections on 7 May.

Past and future roads of the ANC THE ANC told a good story, one that is backed by facts and statistics. The ANC-led government has built clinics and hospitals, today more than ever, South Africa has the highest anti-retroviral coverage, and the NHI programme proves to be yet another landmark health programme that will provide universal coverage to all South African citizens, irrespective of their socio-economic status, colour or creed. They have built state-of-the-art schools and continue to produce the ever-growing numbers of matric pass results. They measure the quality with the growing numbers of those who pass with university exemption and required marks for admission to the Universities of Technology (UT). They also sent numerous students to foreign countries to learn and gain different skills; to countries such as Cuba, Turkey, China, etc. The government has rolled out an aggressive recruitment strategy to lure those with no access to universities and UTs to the technical colleges by offering them free bursaries. The ANC-led government has given a multitude of South Africans access to decent houses and restored their dignity. They have provided electricity, water and sanitation on a massive scale and have invested on the road, port, railway and airfreight

My view Lebohang Mafa Social observer infrastructure to enable business sectors to operate and transport goods without major problems or hiccups. Indeed this is a good story to tell, as the ANC-led government has enacted laws and legislations that guarantee freedom of speech and guarantee media freedom, far better than many of the so-called developed countries, where media censorship has been and still is the order of the day. Media freedom in South Africa is better than many of our Brics (union of Brazil, Russia, China, India and South Africa) counterparts. In fact, we are a model; we set standards around some of these issues. On the policy front, there is a policy certainty in the country, thanks to the ANC government, a rule of law that guarantees all a right to live, to be, to affiliate with any organisation, club, society, and grouping of their choice. However, gloomy a picture the pundits, cynics and the prophets of doom may paint, South Africa

remains a constitutional and vibrant democracy, one that is underpinned by a multi-party democracy as a cornerstone of this young democracy. In times of self-criticism as South Africans we turned to have a pessimistic view of ourselves and our achievements as a nation, but the fact is that we have come a long way. We have achieved a lot as a collective, we have won the Rugby World Cup twice, we celebrated together as a nation when the Bafana Bafana team of 1996 conquered the continent on home soil in the FNB Stadium, we have cheered the Proteas on in countless occasions as they stretched their dominance on cricket fields around the world and we have hosted Africa’s first and probably one of the most successful Soccer World Cups and proved doubters wrong yet again. We have done all this in just 20 years. Fast forward to the overwhelming landslide victory in recent national and provincial polls, notwithstanding the marginal

decrease in the number of votes the ANC has lost to the opposition parties both nationally and provincially. South Africans still believe that the ANC can build on the foundation of a good story told, to make it better. In particular, the following areas need immediate attention: youth unemployment, land redistribution and restitution, BBBEE that ensures that all black people (in legal terms) benefit, labour brokering and the challenge of fraud and corruption, maladministration and poor governance in national and provincial government departments, local municipalities and government agencies. The ANC government must work hard to curb and rid itself of these scourges that have alas come to be a common occurrence in many of the ANC-led administrations. There is a frantic need for the organisation to cleanse itself of the entire rod, and the rogue elements that have infiltrated its ranks for personal enrichment, at the expense of the poor majority. The ANC needs to revamp its political strategy, must improve its narrative to one that talks the same language as young South Africans, if and only if the ANC is to remain in power for many years to come. A change in demographics of

the South African voting population to one that it is dominated by young people (born frees), whose struggle is diametrically different from that of the class of 1976, whose struggle is made up of a need for self-determination (so to speak), a need for decent employment and a general need to be included in the mainstream of the economy, poses a new set of challenges for the ANC and its administration. Hence, showing some sensitivity towards these needs, and being an activist and a champion of young people’s aspirations, might be the first start for the ANC to win these young people’s hearts. Taking all these facts into account, especially as the process to chart a way forward towards local government elections 2016 gets underway, the ANC could potentially restore its political dominance and remain head and shoulders above the rest. This will give young people a hope that indeed there will be a better story to tell come the end of the newly awaited administration, a period that will mark the quarter of a century with the ANC in government, a very rare achievement for liberation movements anywhere in the world. ) To become a contributing writer for the My View column, email Jabulani.Dlamini@volksblad.com.

Break life cycles with spiritual warfare } Pastor Moise Mutombo Kumwimba AS Christians, we are called to be in constant spiritual warfare, since our enemy does not waste time in plotting against us, therefore we should not delay in involving ourselves in spiritual warfare. The Bible is very clear in terms of dwelling places for unclean spirits; they prefer to dwell in human beings. Matthew 12:43: When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it . . . These arid places could be anywhere; bushes, trees, deserts, mountains, etc. But they do not find pleasure in such places because there is nothing for them to destroy; therefore their ideal dwelling places are in human beings. In Mark 5:1–11 we see that demons who possessed the body pleaded with Jesus not to send them out of the area. Now, the question one would ask is what area were they referring to? The answer is that they weren’t only referring to the geographical area, but the area within the human being as their preferred residence of the geographical area. This shows that they had a strong hold in succeeding in their missions within the people of that area. If you have spiritual eyes, you will agree with me that poverty is everywhere but certain places where they fight against it; but there are other places where poverty seems to be accepted as an unavoidable way of life. Now, coming to families, it is even worse. Many Christians are not aware of these demonic operations. Certain families have at least one person dying each year; that is a demonic stronghold of the spirit of death. Break that cycle in Jesus Name. Some families are all gifted, talented and qualified with degrees but none of them rise to a certain level; if they ever do rise it is either that they become drunkards or lose focus in life. In other families they have no old people;

the eldest people are between 40 to 45. By the age of 50 they have to die . . . That family has become a stronghold of premature death. Break that cycle in the Name of Jesus Christ. Other families have beautiful sons and daughters but they never get married; if they do get married, their marriages never last and they will have to return home. Others families have a history of cancer, strokes, high blood pressure, diabetes or even painful legs. With these diseases they keep dying one after the other. Break those cycles in Jesus’ Name. It is time to stop ignoring these facts. Get involved in spiritual warfare. It is unnecessary to live the same life as many members of your family and suffer from the same shortcomings that they suffer from. You might have lost your grandmother who died of a heart attack– maybe your mother as well – and now, as you are walking up and down, your body is becoming numb on one side. Don’t you think it is time for warfare? You might be tired of living, but still, if you do not involve yourself in spiritual warfare, your children will face the same problem. It is not necessary to carry the legacy of illness; poverty, disappointment and failures one generation after the other; break that cycle of life and be set free in the mighty Name of Jesus. ) To hear and learn more, please visit the New Horizon Ministry at the Joe Solomon Primary School in Heidedal every Sunday from 09:00. MILLIONS of South Africans waited patiently in very long queues for their turn to cast their vote at different polling stations throughout the country last Wednesday. Not even cold weather condi-

tions could prevent people from casting their vote. Express visited some of the polling stations throughout the greater Mangaung Municipality to assess the voting process. South Africa’s fifth general elections were very peaceful and no major incidents were reported.

Gabadinho scoops awards } Sidwell Guduka GABADINHO MHANGO was the big winner at the Bloemfontein Celtic Players’ Awards ceremony held at Ilanga Estate on Sunday. The red-hot forward scooped the Players’ Player of the Season and Top-goalscorer of the Season award, while the Player of the Season and Rookie of the Season award went to Clayton Daniels and Lerato Lamola respectively. The rest of the players at the function could only clap their hands for the winners. For his efforts, Mhango won R70 000 in prize-money and he was smiling from ear to ear on the night. He scored eight league goals and two cup goals this season. “Winning the Club Top-scorer award has always been at the top of my wish list when the season started. It is an honour and privilege to receive this award. It motivates me to keep working harder. “Hopefully next year I can win the League Top-scorer award. I will be working towards it,” Mhango told Express. “I am also very happy with the Players’ Player award and it is a great honour. A big thank you to my team-mates, the technical staff and supporters. I want to continue working hard to help Celtic win trophies next season,” the Malawian added. He said he was grateful to God for

giving him the opportunity to ply his trade in the Absa Premiership in South Africa. “I am proud to be in the PSL. For me, this is the best league in Africa and I am playing for one of the best clubs in the country. “So, I have every reason to be happy. I really enjoyed my first season here.” Mhango has been nominated for the Absa Premiership’s Young Player of the Season award category. He will be contesting for the award with Abbubaker Mobara and Keagen Dolly – both of Ajax Cape Town. “I am very happy about the nomination and am looking forward to the PSL awards ceremony. It would be a great achievement for me to win this one as well.” This awards function will be held in Johannesburg on Sunday night. All the winners are: ) Rookie of the Season: Lerato Trevor Lamola – R20 000 ) Top-scorer: Gabadinho Mhango – R30 000 ) Players’ Player of the Season: Gabadinho Mhango R40 000 ) Player of the Season: Clayton Daniels – R60 000 ) Celtic Ladies Players’ Player of the Season: Kgalebane Mohlakoana – R5 000 ) Youth Development Players’ Player of the Season – Apiwe Lubisi – R5 000

Vote for Segolela, says coach } Sidwell Guduka VLADIMIR VERMEZOVIC, the Orlando Pirates coach, has appealed to his club’s supporters to cast their votes for Tlou Segolela in the Carling Black Label Cup. Speaking to Express at the launch of this year’s edition of the competition at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, Vermezovic said: “I appeal to our fans to cast more votes for Segolela so that he can be in the starting line-up on match day. I want him to start the game because Kaizer Chiefs are very scared of him.” Vermezovic’s men will battle it out against Amakhosi in the Carling Black Label Cup at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, 26 July. The match will kick off at 15:00. The interesting part about this tournament is that it affords the fans the opportunity to select their own teams and be the champion coaches on match day. “During my first Carling Black Label Cup I had a team with three left-backs in it. That was strange. But look, it’s what the supporters want, so we respect it. I have never seen something like this anywhere in the world, so thanks to the sponsors for this. “It’s great for the fans. My advice to the

fan coach is not to be like me. I am sometimes tempted to throw a bottle. No, but seriously, just be calm. Sure, the fans must vote. It’s important. I know Chiefs are scared of Segolela. So fans, please vote for him,” Vermezovic said. On the other hand, Stuart Baxter, the Kaizer Chiefs coach, has also appealed to his club’s fans to select a strong team to ensure that they defended their title successfully. “Obviously, we want to win this competition again this year. I hope the guy who will be on the bench will enjoy it,” Baxter said. The format that allows football fans to participate in the Carling Black Label Cup by voting remains unchanged. The only exception, however, is that fans should select a full starting line-up. There will be exciting prizes for fans who cast their votes, including the unique champion coach’s experience where the two lucky voters will have the opportunity to coach one of the Soweto giants in July. ) For the first time fans will be able to vote online at www.carlingblacklabel.co.za. ) Sidwell Guduka, the Express sports editor, attended the launch of the event in Johannesburg courtesy of Carling Black Label.

Cheetahs keep at it

Win tickets to Cheetah game TOYOTA, in conjunction with Express, is giving away ten sets of double tickets to lucky readers to attend the Vodacom Super Rugby match between the Toyota Cheetahs and the Brumbies. The match will be played at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday at 19:10. To enter the competition, visit www.express-news.co.za.

THEY may be their own worst enemy at times, but Toyota Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské believes his players need to prove a point against the Brumbies this weekend in their Vodacom Super Rugby clash in Bloemfontein. The Cheetahs have suffered at their own hands, looking good on attack, but struggling with their own defence as turnovers have killed off their chances of making the play-offs this year. After their defeat against the Force, the Cheetahs want to beat the Brumbies not only to restore some pride, but to give some of their players a chance to impress the national selectors. Drotské says the Brumbies will be a tough side to face, but that his team can do the job. “They’re a tough side and are in the run to win the competition. They have to travel, they

have to come to Bloemfontein which is always more difficult for opposition,” Drotské says. “We still have the Lions, Sharks and Stormers. There is still a lot to play for and we’re competing to get off that bottom spot on the log. There are four or five teams close by and one win can put you in 11th place. We don’t want to end 15th and we will stay positive this week.” The Cheetahs expect to be without scrumhalf Sarel Pretorius this week, after an ankle injury meant he left the field early. Pretorius will go for a scan this week but is likely to miss the Brumbies game. There was some good news as flanker Jean Cook may well be back for the Bloemfontein side, having recovered from injury, but a final decision will be made about whether he will be ready to play. – Supersport.com
