KHUMBULANI KONCO, the CEO of Bloemfontein Celtic, has poured cold water on speculation that the club is up for sale. Some media reports claimed that the Free State outfit was unofficially up for sale – something that Konco has categorically denied. In a chat with Express, Konco said: “The Bloemfontein Celtic Football Club is not for sale. There is absolutely no truth in this rumour. We have had no meetings with anyone about a sale; we don’t know who the source of the rumour is.” Phunya Sele Sele, who finished sixth on the table last season, will kick off their new league campaign against Mpumalanga Black Aces away on the weekend of 8 to 10 August. That particular fixture will be followed up by back-to-back epic battles against Orlando Pirates at home and an away trip to Kaizer Chiefs in mid-August. Their last fixture of the season will see them travel to Johannesburg for a date with Moroka Swallows on 9 May. Before the league gets underway, the side owned by Jimmy Augousti will come face to face with Bidvest Wits in the MTN8 Cup in early August. Meanwhile, Celtic have parted

ways with Johannes Motlhaping and Tsietsi Mahoa. Both players have been released. Clayton Daniels, who was named Player of the Season by the club last season, will not kick a Celtic ball in the upcoming season as he has joined Supersport United on a permanent deal. Musa Nyatama went back to Mamelodi Sundowns when his loan contract with Siwelele expired at the end of the previous campaign. The Bloemfontein side have strengthened their squad by roping in Ruben Cloete who joined from Maritzburg United. He has penned a two-year deal with the ambitious club. “Cloete is a very experienced player having played for the likes of Free State Stars and Orlando Pirates and the club is very happy to have signed the player,” said Konco on Bloemfontein Celtic’s official website. Celtic players are set to return to work on 25 June to prepare for the new season. Asked about their plans for the season ahead, Konco, said: “We are still on holiday at the moment. We will outline our plans for the new season when we reopen.” ) Follow Express on Twitter @Express_News03. ) Like our Facebook page Express-News.

Bad credit: Clear the slate

} Wanga Dlepu THE Credit Amnesty of 2014 gives the South African consumer yet another chance to start on a new slate and join the economic mainstream. This goal is achieved by clearing or removing default listings from the consumer’s credit bureau profile. However, it is emphasised that only the paid-up default listing and paid-up judgement listings will be removed. Yes, of course the other miscellaneous notations like bad payer, slow payer, et cetera will be removed. First, you have to know that presently there are four major credit bureaus operating in South Africa. With “major” it means that these credit bureaus are used by major credit providers like banks, retail stores, motor finance and mortgage or housing finance institutions to assess your application for credit or finance. Each credit bureau holds information that is not entirely the same as the other credit bureau because they receive information from different credit providers. These credit bureaus are the holders of the information that is targeted to be removed through the credit amnesty bill. Therefore, it goes without saying that if you are to stand up and say you have a clean credit record, all listings on all major credit bureaus must be updated and cleared. What you hear is that all the aforementioned negative information will be “automatically removed” from your credit record. What you do not hear is that you have to be involved or initiate some action to ensure that your credit profile benefits fully. ) For more information contact finance.union@yahoo.com, on twitter @nfw_union, or the National Financial Wellness Union on Facebook. ) Dlepu is an independent financial advisor and chairperson of the Financial Wellness Union.

THE Free State Tourism Authority (FSTA) has taken to social media to share and interact with communities and market the province. Due to the success of their I love Free State Facebook page, which has seen hundreds of pictures being submitted by their fans to showcase the beauty of the Free State, this prompted the FSTA to run the Capture the Free State Competition to encourage Free Staters to travel and take unique pictures. The FSTA in all its efforts has recorded over 60 000 fans to their page and has recorded an average 100 000 to 150 000 views a week over the period of a year since the establishment of their Facebook page. At a recent media briefing FSTA chief executive officer, Dhilosen Pillay, when asked how the move to social networking platforms worked in terms of getting people to talk about the province, said they were getting a positive response from both the industry and the public. “We are getting a lump response from the industry itself and a lump response from the public. We need to understand that social media is the way to go and we have capitalised on it and utilised the I Love Free State page as a vehicle to promote the province as a tourist destination,” he said. The Capture the Free State competition saw members of the public who travelled the province submit pictures they had taken on their travels and in turn, fans of the “I love Free State” page would then vote for the best photo. The top three photos, as voted by the fans of the page, were Sean Konig for his image of the road leading to Platberg in the region of Harrismith which was voted the winner and earned him R5 000. Second place with prize-money of R3 000 went to Aleeta Wales and in third place is Lillian Arnold who won R2 000. “The FSTA is on course and more social media platforms will be introduced to enable the entity to communicate to a wider pool of people and introduce the province to diverse markets,” said Khotso Thole, FSTA marketing manager. ) Visit www.express-news.co.za to hear a video interview with FSTA board chairperson, Dhilosen Pillay.

Hís struggle is against illiteracy } Sidwell Guduka WHILE some former political prisoners and activists moan because they failed to secure influential government positions either because of age or unpopularity, others are making waves. Flaxman Qoopane, a seasoned writer, journalist, poet and activist, who has contributed greatly to African literature and academia at large, survives on his love for books. The 59-year-old writer from Hillside View, Bloemfontein, spent 13 years in Tanzania as an ANC exile. While there, he carved his niche writing short stories and protest poetry. SA in dire need of start-up CEOs IT seems as if the career path less travelled in South Africa is that of the tech start-up CEO who can pilot a company to dazzling paydays, sell it and do it all over again in a next venture: The mythical creature known as the South African serial CEO. Israel claims to have more serial entrepreneurs per capita than any other country in the world. You certainly also find them in America, the UK and Sweden, where there are vibrant start-up cultures. They create success and action and have the impact that amazes and influences other people, leaving behind a trail of profitable companies. But where are they in South Africa? South Africa’s big shots One of the most celebrated serial start-up CEOs is Elon Musk, a South African-born superstar in Silicon Valley. His first company, Zip2’s successful sale to Compaq was followed by X.com that became PayPal and was sold to eBay for $1,5 billion. Musk pocketed a modest $165 million from this transaction alone. Musk is currently occupied by his ventures, SpaceX and Tesla. He has also recently launched SolarCity and is exploring the Hyperloop concept for commercial purposes. He joins the ranks of South Africans like Willem van Biljon, who started Mosaic Software, sold it, then built Amazon.com’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), sold it and started Nimbula, sold

it and is now the CEO of Takealot.com that raised just over R1 billion for expansion in the past few weeks. We can also talk about Vinny Lingham, Pieter de Villiers, and many others alike. At their December 2013 Executive of the Year awards, the Silicon Valley Business Journal commented on four of their top five winners in a surprising manner: “Here’s something interesting about our executive of the year awards, something that hadn’t occurred to us at the time that these four executives were selected – they are all originally from South Africa.” The event boasts competition from the likes of Google founder, Larry Page. Still a long way to go So, we know that South Africans can do it and that they are somewhere out there doing it. But South Africa is still very far from the booming start-up activity observed in university towns like Cambridge, Leuven, Boston and, of course, the Silicon Valley region. These areas have become the innovation capitals of the world, with companies spinning out of universities into a whirlpool of collaboration between academia, industry and government. A highly-developed ecosystem for technology transfer springs from this interaction that sees investors, multi-national companies and entrepreneurs from outside the university flocking to the area.

My view

As a result, business incubators, accelerators, science parks, jobs, acquisitions and all the other elements of a successful entrepreneurial ecosystem naturally arise. Within this wonderful mixture of activity you’ll find a pool of brilliant CEOs who want to do it over and over again. Bring the challenge and they will do the rest. Our local universities have been producing world-class technologies for years, but only a few of these innovations have spawned new companies. One can ponder for hours on the many reasons for this, but it is certain that a key ingredient is our missing South African serial CEO.

who couldn’t land the big bank job and had to tinker away in Mother’s garage to make ends meet. It was certainly nothing to aspire to. Self-employment – how dreadful! The current chairperson of a large financial institution once scolded Bishops boy and UCT alumnus Mark Shuttleworth telling him: “Your parents paid dearly for a good education and look what you are doing! You should be grateful towards them and get a proper job.” We all know the end of that story. Perhaps our fear of failure overrides our adventurous side. Our society seems to be highly unforgiving toward failures and the “tarnished” individuals involved with it. In the United States, failure means excellent experience and is a badge of honour on a CV. Whatever the reason, the bottom line is that entrepreneurship is still not aspirational in the South African culture.

The thrill of taking risks We know they are out there and that some of them thrive abroad. From time to time we even observe a few of them on home ground, but they are few and far between. Are South Africans, like many central European nations, in general too conservative to give up the security of a comfy corporate job in favour of the adrenaline roller-coaster ride of starting a company? When I was a student, the self-acclaimed “entrepreneurs” among us were viewed with pity – the poor guys

We have the potential We have four universities within an hour’s drive from each other in the Western Cape. There is no reason why we cannot establish the region as a worldclass innovation capital. In order to rocket the Western Cape to the levels of some innovation capitals abroad, we will need to get our serial CEOs out of their hiding places and offer them opportunities to do their magic. The recent announcement of the appointment of Lindiwe Zulu as minister of Small Business Development is perhaps a very

Anita Nel Social observer

good step in the right direction, but we need much more than a seat in cabinet to take us to the next level. I doubt that the minister alone will uncover the serial CEOs in hiding. We have to help. Stellenbosch University, through its innovation entity, Innovus, recently took the lead and established the LaunchLab, a mixed-use business incubator that is open to any entrepreneur. At the same time, the university is spinning out four new companies, but we can do much more. We need those serial CEOs. There are awesome opportunities on our tables, but we find it difficult to marry these with the right CEOs. Entrepreneurial CEOs are needed to raise funding for and run our companies, or mentor and raise our young and inexperienced CEOs to become the serial CEOs. So, Minister Zulu, colleagues and friends, let’s embark on an Easter egg hunt to find those mythical creatures and start working towards becoming the Innovation Capital of Africa. ) In a “tenderpreneur”-obsessed country such as ours, young people have to be inspired to dream bigger rather than who can connect you to government tenders. – Ed. ) Anita Nel is CEO of Innovus, the wholly-owned universityindustry interaction and innovation company of Stellenbosch University.

The For Our Children Project, sponsored by Volksblad’s Local Community Newspapers, Imperial GM Bloemfontein and Radio Rosestad, is to the benefit of Engo Child and Youth Care. The prize is a Chevrolet Spark Campus. People can buy tickets for R20 per ticket and then stand a chance to win the vehicle. The closing date for entries is 23 November. The final draw will be held on 23 January 2015 in Bloemfontein and the winner will drive away in a brand-new Chevrolet Spark Campus. There will be a special celebration for Father’s Day at the Mimosa Mall. Father’s Day-branded, longsleeved, 100% cotton shirts will be sold at the main atrium in the mall. People will also receive a free entry ticket to the For Our Children Competition with each shirt they buy.

Ke Yona team search down to 30 THE Nedbank Ke Yona team search for South Africa’s prospective future football heroes has climaxed with about 30 players advancing to the preparation camp. The chosen 30 players were part of the 48 selected during a nationwide talent search. The group of 30 was selected after undergoing intense training at the High-Performance Centre at the University of Pretoria a week ago. They were put through tough drills that tested their football qualities. The training camp at the high-performance institute was utilised to reduce the squad to 30 players which will eventually be trimmed to the final 18-man squad to form

Understand the nature of understanding } Prophet Godfrey Thomas THE most important thing in life is understanding. Understanding is more important than knowledge; it is more important than wisdom even though wisdom is supreme. What is understanding? Understanding is an assimilation of correct ideas. It is also comprehension of truth. I see misunderstanding as the greatest tragedy in life. When misunderstanding is understanding to you, then you will live your life on what you think you’ve understood and in the true sense of the word, misunderstood. That is called error and nothing is more dangerous than zealous error. With this I mean mistakes supported by keenness and enthusiasm. Truth leads to freedom: John 8:32 defines truth as original information. In other words, truth is getting back to the original information about something. The only person or source that has original information on any product, is the manufac-

Vuvumendlini was a dedicated DA activist, tirelessly working in Bohlokong to advance the DA’s goal of bringing about an “open-opportunity society for all”. He played an instrumental role during the recent election campaign. We extend our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Vuvumendlini family, to his friends, acquaintances and all the members of the DA Bohlokong Branch. His death leaves with us a void, but also a determination to work towards a crime-free society. May his soul rest in peace. Robala ka kgotso.

Bartimea: Issue critical PATRICIA KOPANE, DA leader in the Free State: THE DA in the Free State condemns the violence and destruction of property which took place during a protest at the Bartimea School for the Deaf and Blind in Thaba Nchu last week. To voice their frustration, learners threw stones at the police and set fire to the administration block. This after a meeting with department officials which did not sufficiently address their griev-

ances. Among their demands were to have teachers proficient in Sign Language, proper meals, structured after-school activities and a new principal. This is taking place during a crucial time when students are preparing or sitting for their mid-year examinations and the violence puts learners with disabilities in a dangerous position as some of them are blind and deaf. The party urges the Free State Education Department to act swiftly and solve this problem as a matter of urgency.

To coach team unforgettable } Sidwell Guduka

TEBOGO LETUBE, a Kaizer Chiefs fan, said coaching South Africa’s most successful club was something he would treasure forever. This Soweto-born man was one of two lucky supporters who had won the once in a lifetime opportunity of becoming a “Champion Coach” in the Carling Black Label Cup last year. The other winner was Kgotso Mfati, a die-hard Orlando Pirates fan. Letube will always be remembered as the coach who guided Kaizer Chiefs to their first Carling Black Label Cup victory. The Phefeni Boys defeated Pirates 1-0 on their third try, courtesy of Lehlohonolo Majoro’s first half goal. The Buccaneers won the first two editions of the competition – both on penalties. “My champion moment was when Bobby Motaung, the manager of Kaizer Chiefs, handed the team over to me. The players started addressing me as coach and that meant a lot to me,” Letube said. “I’ll never forget the mood in the changing rooms. I had never experienced anything like it before. The players were dancing and singing like warriors ready for war. They were truly motivated, and it was no surprise we won on the day,” he said. His counterpart, Mfati, echoed his sentiments, but said he had had butterflies in his stomach when he had been introduced to the Pirates players. “When I was first introduced to the team, I was nervous, it took me about 60 seconds to find my feet and eventually I uttered my first words; greeting them. “I was also caught off-guard a couple of times addressing them in vernacular, forgetting that some of the players did not understand my home language,” Mfati said. The Buccaneer said he would not trade his experience for anything as he had a better knowledge of football now. “Walking out of the iconic FNB Stadium tunnel and seeing thousands of Bucs fans in black and white cheering for us sent shivers down my spine. “The best moment was when I had to tell Daine Klate to go warm up, and when we discussed technical changes at the side line prior to his substitution. I am glad I had the opportunity,” he said. The Be the Champion Coach campaign

provides fans a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience what it feels like to be a coach on match-day, when the Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates battle it out for the title. This year’s match will be played on 26 July at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. To experience this opportunity, fans can do so by purchasing a Carling Black Label beer and either dialing *120*764* or going to www.carlingblacklabel.co.za. They must then enter the unique code found on the underside of the bottle cap or can pull ring and the # sign (with no spaces in between), and can then choose the team they would like to manage and the players they would like to see start. Fans can further join the Coaches Forum to take part in the football conversation and to gain access to the question of the week. ) For more stories about the Carling Black Label Cup visit www.express-news.co.za.

Nyakane makes the squad } Sidwell Guduka

TREVOR NYAKANE, the Toyota Cheetahs prop, has been called up to the Springboks as an additional member in the squad for the Castle Lager Incoming Series. Nyakane played all three of his tests for South Africa last June, but was not part of the squad for the Castle Lager Rugby Championship. The Springboks are in camp in Durban where they will be playing against Wales at Growthpoint Kings Park on Saturday. The match starts at 17:00. “Trevor is a player who we identified last year already as someone who can play at the highest level,” said Heyneke Meyer, Springbok coach. “He’s currently not the first choice in his position for the Cheetahs and we’re thankful that they granted us this opportunity to pull Trevor into the squad. “As the Cheetahs are on a break from Vodacom Super Rugby at the moment, we want to use this opportunity to work with Trevor, keep him up to date with our playing structures and, most importantly, spend time on his conditioning and other aspects considering the Springbok ethos,” explained Meyer. Juan de Jongh and Marnitz Boshoff will not be considered for selection for Saturday’s game due to illness and injury, respectively. De Jongh was admitted to a Durban hospital on Sunday evening with a severe chest infection. He will in all likelihood only be discharged this week and will

Boshoff sprained his ankle at training in Cape Town last week. He has a grade one ankle sprain and the Springbok medical team are hopeful that he will be able to start training again late this week. A decision on both players’ further involvement in the Castle Lager Incoming Series will only be made at a later stage and they will remain with the squad for the time being. Meanwhile, Flip van der Merwe has been granted special permission to attend his brother’s wedding this weekend and will rejoin the Springbok squad in Nelspruit next Monday. The Springboks will travel to Mpumalanga on Sunday to prepare for another outing against Wales at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, 21 June, at 15:00. ) For more sports stories, visit www.express-news.co.za.
