Allegations of Magashule buying Bloemfontein Celtic FC denied

} Sidwell Guduka IKIE AUGOUSTI, the managing director of Bloemfontein Celtic, says he has not discussed the sale of the club with Premier Ace Magashule. The Sunday tabloid newspaper Sunday World reported that the Free State premier was allegedly buying the Bloemfontein side through an intermediary, Max Tshabalala, who owns ABC Motsepe side Roses United FC. But Augousti, who co-owns Phunya Sele Sele with his elder brother, Jimmy, has denied the rumours. “We have not spoken to Ace Magashule about the sale of the Bloemfontein Celtic Football Club. The only person who approached us was an agent representing

someone who is interested in buying the club. But it is not Magashule,” Augousti told Express on Sunday. “We told that agent we were busy with pre-season preparations. So we asked him to send us a written offer and said we would consider it. “But he has not come back to us with his proposal. That was about ten days ago,” he added. Express phoned Magashule on Sunday to get his comment regarding the matter. However, when we asked him to confirm or deny whether it was true that he was buying Celtic, he hung up. Express tried to contact him again several times immediately thereafter, but his phone rang unanswered. Express also sent him an SMS asking him to get back

to us, but he did not respond. The premier was quoted in the Sunday World as saying: “Even when I dream, I don’t dream about a club. I would never own a soccer club. I don’t have any relationship with Max, not at all. “In fact, I was so surprised when they (his media team) told me (about this article). I can assure you there’s nothing like that.” In the same article published this past Sunday, Tshabalala also denied making an offer for Celtic or that he did so on behalf of Magashule. “The premier can’t involve himself in business. Anyway, Fifa and the Hawks would find out if I bought Celtic on his behalf because the money would have to come from his funds into mine, and then

to the seller. “I vehemently deny that I am buying the club,” Tshabalala told the Sunday tabloid newspaper. Express also contacted him for comment. His response was: “The article in the Sunday World is self-explanatory. I cannot comment any further.” Tshabala tried to sell his club to Sinki Mnisi last season, but the deal failed. Meanwhile, NFD side Jomo Cosmos have announced that they would be relocating to Parys in the Free State. It was confirmed on the Ezenkosi’s official Twitter account that the club would be moving to Parys, with the Fezile Dabi Stadium as their new home venue. ) To read more about this story, visit www.express-news.co.za.

Reitz cleaners polish their dignity THE five University of the Free State (UFS) workers who were the victims of the racially inspired Reitz video have turned over a new leaf in their life, launching their own cleaning company. Launched last week Thursday in Bloemfontein, the company is known as Mamello Trading, meaning “perseverance”. The former workers who are now directors are David Molete, Naomi Phororo, Emma Koko, Rebecca Adams and Mittah Ntlatseng. The company’s launch has been made possible with the help of the management of the UFS Bloemfontein Campus. The UFS has signed a four-year contract with Mamello Trading to clean the university’s southern campus, situated in Church Street. Dr Choice Makhetha, vice-rector of external relations, said the company was already registered in 2012, adding that a lot of work had been done since then. “Training took 12 months,” she told a group of guests, which included the families of the former workers. “A four-year mentorship programme continues,” said Makhetha. She said the contract was signed for cleaning and gardening services on the South Campus from 1 June 2014. “Mamello is open for business, cleaning and garden services,” said Makhetha. She said they would like other companies to support Mamello Trading, adding the new business owners had gone through all the training stages. “We have received start-up materials.” The launch was also a farewell function for the former employees of the UFS. The deal is a result of compensation negotiations between the five, the UFS and the Human Rights Commission (HRC). However, when the five directors of Mamello Trading were asked their first business-related question on the value of their four-year contract with the UFS, Makhetha said there was no need to put a value to the contract. “With all due respect, the kind

Right from the beginning we have not been talking about figures. We are talking about the quality of work that has been done, restoring human dignity, and no amount of money could replace that.” The former Free State head of the Human Rights Commission Mothusi Lepheane also indicated there was no need to mention a contract figure. “We do not want to quantify

this kind of journey in monetary terms,” he said. Lepheane, who is no longer with the commission, said the launch of Mamello Trading indicated a new chapter for those involved and efforts in developing the country. He managed the human rights case of the five Mamello directors while working for the commission about six years ago. Lepheane told guests that the Reitz video victims had kept contact with him since

he left the commission. The company consists of ten workers and four supervisors. “We were dead but now we are alive again,” said Adams, describing herself and her four partners at the announcement. Adams, dressed in a snazzy suit, further said what she and her partners now own they would have never imagined in their wildest dreams. “Today we are overcome with happiness. Our wounds have been

healed. This company caught us off guard. We really did not expect it,” she said. Advocate Mohamed Ameermia of the HRC said they were in the process of going through the agreement in fine detail to see whether the UFS has stuck to it. He said although much still has to be done, work must continuously be done. Ameermia said it was important to make it known that an important historic milestone has been reached.

Union lends learners a helping hand

THE poor learners of Matla Primary School had every reason to be happy last week. They received free school uniforms from the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) during the handing-over ceremony that was held on the school premises in Phase 6, Bloemfontein. Khethiwe Zwane (9), a gr. 2 learner, was among 60 recipients of the uniforms.

“I am thrilled to receive this uniform. I am now going to look the same like the rest of other learners in our school. I can’t wait to wear my new uniform tomorrow,” an excited Zwane told Express. “I didn’t have a school uniform. I wore my private clothes to school and that affected my confidence in class. My parents could not afford to buy me a school uniform because they are unemployed. I am proud to finally have it,” she said.

Dorcus Sekabate, who is the Sadtu vice-president for gender, said it was a pleasure for her organisation to uplift the lives of poor learners in the province. “We have donated 46 sets of full uniforms to the needy learners of Matla Primary School. This is something that we do every year and we are very proud of it,” said Sekabate. “As the leaders of Sadtu at national level, each of us has adopted a school which we take care of. “Personally, I adopted Tlokola High School in Marquard but I decided to donate these uniforms to the Matla Primary School. Hopefully the uniforms will moti-

Meanwhile, Selebogo Lithebe, the principal of the school, praised Sadtu for donating school uniforms to his school. “We are happy about the great job Sadtu is doing. They must keep on doing good to the community. All the kids who received uniforms are happy. As the school we want to thank Sadtu on their behalf,” Lithebe said. “We also donated a further 14 sets of full uniforms to the kids. All in all 60 learners received the uniforms today,” he concluded. ) For more news and pictures, visit www.express-news.co.za.

Premier wants ace learners } Tladi Moloi DURING his State of the Province Address at the University of the Free State’s Qwaqwa Campus (Uniqwa) Hall on Thursday evening Ace Magashule, the Free State premier, said no child should be denied access to a school because they did not have a birth certificate. “The key to success is education and for this reason the standard of education is very high. The Free State wants to be number one in the country for the next few years and for this reason the Birth Certificate Campaign for learners’ admission will be expanded. This will be implemented between July and September each year,” he said. He said they would retain their focus to ensure the registration of learners at school-going age throughout the province, especially on farm schools. “Two hostels for schools on farms and in rural areas will be added to the hostel programme in this financial year,” he said. Good news, Magashule said, for teachers who had been working temporarily was that 80 of them would be employed permanently. “The induction of new teachers and principals will be prioritised and specific leadership programmes for the principals will be facilitated,” he said. He said the quality of teaching and learning would be improved through the annual national assessments and there would be regular communication of learner assessment results to the school community. “We have formulated clear targets for the education sector. We want to increase our matric pass rate this year

During his address, the premier also touched on fighting crime and corruption, job creation and the troubled Health Department. He admitted that the health sector was currently facing challenges and said they would treat this as a matter of urgency. “We have taken the appropriate intervention measures through the provincial

treasury and are comprehensively and systematically addressing key focus areas. “These include the functionality of our facilities, financial and human resource management, information technology, governance as well as infrastructure development,” he said. He said a new clinic would be built in Rouxville using the massification approach and planning for the construction of a clinic in Ratanang in Jacobsdal would commence while the Thabong Clinic in Welkom would be extended.

Retire wisely: Seek advice DECIDING how to invest your retirement fund money is about making one of the biggest financial decisions of your life. Karin Muller, head of Sanlam’s Growth Market Solutions, says the latest research from the Sanlam Benchmark Survey showed that a third of South Africans did not make use of professional financial advice but relied on their own knowledge, that of a colleague, their human resources department or their employer. “A staggering 88% of people who are financially better off in their retirement received professional financial advice.” This shows how critical it is to ensure that you obtain advice from a professional. “People don’t understand that retirement planning should start on day one of their employment or the date of joining their retirement fund. The decisions people make while they are employed will ultimately determine how comfortably they are able to live during retirement. Unfortunately, most retirement fund members only start considering retirement when they get closer to retirement.” The latest Sanlam Benchmark Survey shows that people who retire comfortably have the following in common: ) They started saving for retirement a few years earlier than the average person. ) They saved more each month. ) They preserved their savings when they changed jobs. ) They reinvested their lump sums to bolster their retirement income. ) They had additional sources of savings, such as other retirement annuities. Muller says it is worrying that just 29% of South Africans are able to maintain their standard of living in retirement. What’s more, people who retire now experience longer retirements, but have less money to live on and many are looking after dependants in their retirement.

Fruits of workshop displayed FRUITS of the Vryfees workshop, which has seen secondary school learners in the Free State and Northern Cape trained in art projects such as drama, musical theatre and dance, will be on show during the Vryfees, which will be held from 15 to 20 July. The innovation to create workshops, facilitated by experienced facilitators in specific genres, came about as the Vryfees organisers approached Godfrey Manenye

and Andile Qongnqo to be part of the festival’s selection committee in an attempt to attract a broader audience to the festival. “We immediately realised the importance of drawing a diverse and broader audience. “In an attempt to achieve the previouslymentioned objective, we pioneered the idea of offering workshops to disadvantaged schools in the Free State and the Northern Cape with the belief that the Vryfees would bring more productions and attract a

broader audience. “In totality, the initiative would provide the Vryfees with the opportunity to invest in an arts programme for disadvantaged learners,” said Manenye. The six-month long project started in February at the Hodisa Technical Secondary School in Bloemfontein and final productions of this project will take place at the Vryfees on 15 and 18 July between 12:00 and 13:00 at the open stage area.

HAPPY REUNION: From the left are Gerrie van Deventer, farmer, Butana Komphela, Police MEC, and Lt Gen. Simon Mpembe, the Free State police commissioner, at the Monontsha Border Police Station after police recovered 68 of Van Deventer's 85 sheep that were stolen last month. Photo: Tladi Moloi

Farmer elated about found sheep } Tladi Moloi GERRIE VAN DEVENTER of the Partyfontein Farm just outside Kestell has described himself as the happiest farmer in the world after 68 of his 85 stolen sheep were recovered by police. Butana Komphela, Free State Police MEC, and Lt Gen. Simon Mpembe, the provincial police commissioner, drove with Van Deventer to the Lesotho side of the Monontsha Border Police Station where the sheep, stolen last month and worth about R74 300, were kept. A 34-year-old suspect, a Lesotho citizen, has been arrested and detained in Bothabothe, Lesotho, and will be released to South African authorities once extradition

arrangements have been finalised between the two countries. “I went to the kraal on the morning of 27 May and discovered my sheep were gone. I quickly phoned the police and they were positive that they would find the sheep – indeed they are here,” a relieved Van Deventer said. He said his heart had nearly stopped when he found that 85 of his sheep had been stolen. He said he would like to thank the police for a job well done and was adamant that at least 10 or 11 of the still missing 17 sheep would be recovered. “I had a good working relationship with the police while I was working at the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality, that is why I had faith in them. It was heart-

breaking because I took my pension money and bought something to make a living from. Then someone came and stole them,” he said. Komphela said they went to Lesotho because of the police’s success. He said the sheep recovery had been part of the recently-launched 102-Day Premier Operation. The 102-Day Premier Operation, according to Premier Ace Magashule, is an initiative by his administration to celebrate the ANC’s 102 years of existence where they will double their efforts in addressing the province’s challenges. “I am impressed with our working relations with the Lesotho police. I wish this marriage could go a long way so that

There is no misery in the blood of Jesus } Pastor Moise Mutombo Kumwimba JESUS CHRIST never made provision for a life free of sickness, disease, failure, poverty, limitation, et cetera. I mean, He never promised us a smooth flight but rather a safe landing. There is indeed power in the blood of Jesus Christ to save us, heal us, deliver us and to destroy all that signify misery and to command Satan and his demons to go where they belong. Satan can bring misery into the lives of the children of God, but because of the power in the blood of Jesus Christ, it will go away. Misery is any situation that is threatening your peace and comfort. In John 10:10, Jesus said: I came so they may have life and have it more abundantly. Here we see Jesus did not include misery in his purpose of coming or his redemption plan. This reveals that the true presence of Jesus Christ and the application of Jesus Christ by the believers, bring protection in the face of demonic oppression. This includes healing in the

midst of sicknesses; reviving lives when family members and doctors agree to switch off the life support. Yes, that is my Jesus. It brings light in darkness to free the slaves of darkness, brings knowledge of righteousness to those in bondage of sins generation after generation. There is indeed power in the blood of my Jesus Christ. Do not accept any misery because Jesus is on the other side waiting to change that misery, and the only bridge to where Jesus is, the only connection, is faith. Activate your faith and see that He will put his peace in your troubled heart. Some today have accepted misery in their lives because they have been in it for too long. They believe Jesus was just a

Biblical character to motivate us today. Such people reveal their acceptance to their miserable situation by the way they talk. For example, when you greet them with “how are you”, the response will be, I am fine, just my blood pressure; I am fine, just my cancer; I am fine, just my debt; I am fine, just my diabetes. Wait! So the cancer is now yours? The diabetes, blood pressure and debt are now yours? Do not reduce the power in the blood of Jesus by the number of demonic oppressions you face. Jesus still heals, delivers, blesses, and He is the only compassionate Saviour the world has ever known nor will there be any other equal to this Mighty God. ) To hear more of these messages please attend the New Horizon Ministry at the Joe Solomon School in Heidedal every Sunday from 09:30. ) You can also SMS your prayer request to 071-214-9404. Come in faith and encounter the love and acceptance from our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

we could make South Africa and Lesotho a better place to live in,” he said. He said he would like to congratulate the Monontsha police and those from Lesotho for recovering the sheep. “You must remember that this is our bank. “So you could imagine, if they steal that much from your bank, you will get a heart attack and die,” he said. Mpembe said this had shown the world that stock theft was a big problem in South Africa. “We have this 102-day programme – believe me, criminals will be arrested and sent to jail. We are happy with what our police, together with those from Lesotho, have done,” he said.

Land: Give black farmers title deeds IT must be said that the Land Act of 1913 and the subsequent rule of apartheid denied the majority of South Africans a stake in this sector. It denied them their dignity and denied them the right to own land which deepened the poverty that prevails today. However, pronouncements made by politicians oversimplify the reasons as to why land reform was and still is such a dismal failure. How to succeed The Constitution is blamed, current landowners are blamed and this in itself detracts from the true reasons why thus far land reform has been such a failure. We need to return to the inclusive premise that was handed down by late President Nelson Mandela, who set the example of an inclusive process that South Africans of all professions need to re-implement. For only by a deepening of all the co-operation will we reach the necessary success rate. Of equal importance, we need to address the levels of corruption in our society that are undermining, not only the success, but also the sustainability of our economy. A stern warning Grain SA would like to warn civil society about the vulnerability of our food security in South Africa. One weather phenomenon, where a cyclone developed over the Indian Ocean and pushed the low pressure cell to the west, resulted in abundant precipitation that saved our food security. If that weather phenomenon had not developed, the resulting drought would have destroyed our food security within the following week. Is it not apt that in January 2014 we exported 250 000 tons of maize to the Zimbabwean people to stave off the hunger they experienced? Food security in itself is not a right but a privilege and it should be a national asset. The time has come for South Africans to unite and cooperate as to the challenges that face us as a nation. For our inability to do so will simply destroy the fabric of our society for hungry people are ungovernable. Food imports will further exacerbate the trade deficit which we can ill afford. The dialogue between all interested parties must start in earnest, for there will come a time where the weather will dictate that we cannot produce enough food for ourselves and it will have a direct bearing on all agricultural foodstuffs as to their unavailability and cost.

My view Louw Steytler Social observer Join forces We, Grain SA, appeal to all South Africans to close ranks, for only then will we be able to deal with the challenges that face us as a nation. Grain SA is a willing and responsible participant in the land reform negotiations via Afasa and Agri SA. We have noticed that the debate has moved to the media and would like to give direction as to our viewpoint as well as a more realistic outlook from our experience. Policy a bad idea We would like to state clearly that we do not support the proposal of Minister Nkwinti, minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, to give 50% of each farm to the workers without compensation to the current owners. We are convinced that such a decision will not only put food security at risk, but also lead to massive food price increases, higher inflation, increase in interest rates and eventually slower economic growth. Slower economic growth will put more people out of a job and poverty will become a stark reality for many. The three-month strike at the platinum mines was a good indicator as to what will happen if farmers are not allowed to exercise their constitutional right to produce food in a free market environment. In this case it will last much longer and could lead to anarchy as we experienced in North Africa and the Middle East in 2008. It all started with food prices and food shortages. Grain crop production is financed by the commercial banks and agribusinesses and the land is used as collateral to secure the funds to procure seed, fertiliser chemicals and diesel. Without the title deeds of the land, there is no finance. Without finance, there is no production. Give blacks deeds The greatest impediment for black grain farmers is access to finance by virtue of the fact that they do not hold the title deed of the land that they work on. Most of the land belongs to the state and by affording them the title deed, you enable them to acquire financing from commercial banks and

agribusinesses. The minister’s implementation proposal will logically reduce the hectares under crop production by at least 50% which could curtail the production capacity with immediate effect. By implication a shortage and massive price increases will be the order of the day. Prices will increase by virtue of international price determination, from export to import parity. The maize price will logically increase by about R1 400 per ton (70%) and will accelerate by the demand exceeding the supply and that in turn will raise general inflation above the Reserve Bank’s targets. South African ports are not geared to import huge quantities of grain and food shortages will become a reality. Food shortages throughout the world also have the ability to create political instability, which South Africa can ill afford. Avoiding anarchy There is enough research to indicate that there is a strong correlation between high food prices coupled with food shortages and absolute anarchy. This could surely not be on the minister’s mind. Every political imperative has its consequences. These consequences are not desired outcomes as to the Constitution of South Africa and for that matter the Freedom Charter. We should give careful consideration to the socioeconomic consequences thereof to be experienced by all, especially the poorest of the poor, who spend as a percentage of their income on food, more than other income groupings. This would compound their plight to a far greater extent than any other income group. This is not a wage negotiation. We are dealing with the future sustenance of our nation. Grain SA supports land reform in a way that maintains food security as well as political stability. A totally unrealistic proposal such as this would further complicate these imperatives and lead to racial polarisation rather than the aforesaid aim of deracialising the rural communities and economies and will lead to a deepening of the poverty experienced by so many South Africans currently. Trade union style tactics and constant farmer bashing are outdated in a liberal constitutional democratic dispensation in our fledgling democracy of 20 years. Sustainable land reform is an imperative and we support food security as an equally important imperative, which both are of cardinal importance if we, as responsible South Africans, would like to see poverty allevia-

tion as the logical consequence of these actions. Grain SA’s role Grain SA, with the financial support of the Maize and other Grain Trusts, has been actively transforming the grain farming sector for more than ten years. More than 200 black commercial grain farmers are now in the position to produce agricultural grain commodities economically and also sustainably. The training of almost 700 farm workers this year has enabled them to become more economically sustainable. We further enhance their capacity by training, to address household food security and many producers will have a surplus to sell profitably into the market. Whilst the wages of farm workers are in the media, we confirm that Grain SA pays R3 189 per month, plus a 13th cheque to our employed farm workers at the Nampo farm. Grain SA’s membership of black farmers have grown to more than 4 000 and have now exceeded the number of white members. We need to finance those who work the communal and state-owned land, who do not have collateral by virtue of the fact that they do not receive the title deeds of the land that they work. We have been very successful in establishing many commercial black farmers and were crestfallen when government scaled down the recapitalisation programme. Currently we have nine regional Grain SA offices throughout grain production areas, focusing on rendering extension services and training black farmers. We fail to understand why this programme of highly successful assistance in maintaining food security and supporting land reform is not regarded by government as important and an integral part of successful land reform. The speed of this way of land reform is limited by the lack of trust, funds and title deeds to new farmers. Grain SA is not just debating land reform, we are practising it successfully. We are delivering the very result government and civil society desires: successful black farmers and food security. Disregarding the property rights of individuals in South Africa will have major implications for the whole economy, not just the agricultural sector. Every seed planted by a grain farmer is an investment against poverty. We believe in South Africa and want to see her prosper and that our children are secure and well nourished. This is what we want to achieve and would like to contribute towards this dream. Now let us all make it happen. ) Steytler is chairperson of Grain SA.

Bills welcomed } Zizi Kodwa ON Monday the president of the Republic of South Africa, pres. Jacob Zuma, signed into law the Restitution of Land Rights Amendment Bill and the Property Valuation Bill thus taking a bold and decisive step in the quest to accelerate the pace of land reform in South Africa. The ANC welcomes the enactment of these bills as they are giving expression to the urgency for comprehensive land reform expressed by the people of South Africa. They are in response to the fact that the willing buyer willing seller principle has not yielded the desired outcomes at the rate envisaged, hence the need for the establishment of the Office of the Valuer General. The Property Valuation Act, which

establishes the Office of the Valuer General, seeks amongst others to facilitate and accelerate land reform through the regulation of the valuation of land; a problem that has severely hindered the process of land restitution and land reform to date. Both the Restitution of Land Rights Amendment Act and Property Valuation Act are a victory for the millions of South Africans dispossessed of their land as the result of past discrimination. The ANC has no doubt that we are one step closer to redressing the imbalances of the past and fostering conditions which enable our people to gain access to land on an equitable basis as contemplated by the Freedom Charter and our Constitution. ) Kodwa is the ANC national spokesperson.

More tests for ‘miraculous’ devices EGYPT’s military said Saturday that devices it claimed it invented to detect and cure Aids and hepatitis C needed six more months of testing. The army had earlier promised to reveal the technology to the public this coming Monday, after making what experts dismissed as an outlandish claim last February. At a news conference then, the head of the army’s engineering agency said the military had produced an “astonishing, miraculous scientific invention” that could detect Aids, hepatitis and other viruses without taking blood samples and also purify the blood of those suffering from the diseases. The claim caused uproar among scientists and the public, with many pointing out that it had not been properly verified. The claim hit a sensitive nerve in Egypt,

where hepatitis C is an epidemic. Some studies estimate that up to 10% of 86 million Egyptians have it, making it the country with the highest prevalence in the world. In a press conference held in a military hospital in Cairo on Saturday, a military doctor said the devices needed to undergo further testing before they could be released to the public. Maj. Gen. Gamal el-Serafy, director of the Armed Forces Medical Department, said doctors had already started testing one of the machines, the so-called Complete Cure Device, on 80 hepatitis C patients who were also being treated with medication. Saturday’s news conference notably dropped any mention of the devices as a cure for Aids, only referring to hepatitis. – Daily Mail

Chiellini offers Suarez support

BITTEN: Giorgio Chiellini (right) of Italy.

Win Win Win

GIORGIO CHIELLINI, Italy defender, feels the punishment imposed on Luis Suarez, the man who bit him, by Fifa is too excessive. Chiellini was the victim of the Uruguay striker’s moment of madness as Suarez appeared to dig his teeth into the centre-back’s shoulder in a crunch group stage tie between Italy and Uruguay at the World Cup in Brazil last Tuesday. The world football governing body’s disciplinary committee has since reviewed the evidence and banned the 27-year-old Liverpool frontman for nine international games and four months from all football activities. However, Chiellini believes the proposed sanctions are too severe and could have lasting effects on a player’s career. “Now inside me there’s no feelings of joy, revenge or anger against Suarez for an incident that happened on the pitch and that’s done,” he said in a blog post on his official website. “There only remains the anger and the disappointment about the match. “At the moment my only thought is for Luis and his family, because they will face a very difficult period. “I have always considered unequivocal the disciplinary interventions by the competent bodies, but at the same time I believe that the proposed formula is excessive. “I sincerely hope that he will be allowed, at least, to stay close to his team mates during the games because such a ban is really alienating for a player.” ) Visit www.express-news.co.za for more breaking news about the 2014 World Cup.

TOYOTA, in conjunction with Express, is giving away ten sets of double tickets to lucky winners to attend the Toyota Cheetahs vs Sharks match at the Free State Stadium on Saturday at 19:10. ) To enter the competition visit www.express-news.co.za.

Injuries plague team THE Toyota Cheetahs will not be able to call on the services of Heinrich Brüssow for their Super Rugby clash against the Sharks in Bloemfontein on Saturday. Coach Naka Drotské told Express that the loose forward was still struggling with a groin injury and won’t be risked for the game. Philip van der Walt (hand) and Jean Cook (shoulder) are ready for action again, while Oupa Mohoje has also returned from the Springboks. But with Boom Prinsloo and Lappies Labuschagné (both groin injuries) still out, the Cheetahs are a bit short at loose forward, which prompted the coach to call up Shimlas flank Henco Venter into the squad. There was, however, also some good news on the injury front for the Cheetahs. Returning Springboks Johan Goosen and Coenie Oosthuizen, who were both struggling with knee injuries, will be available for Saturday’s clash at the Free State Stadium. The kick-off is at 19:10.

Teams clash in Charity Showdown } Sidwell Guduka PREMIER SOCCER LEAGUE (PSL) outfits Bloemfontein Celtic, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Bidvest Wits and AmaZulu will feature in the inaugural four-team pre-season tournament in Johannesburg this month. The event, dubbed the Charity Showdown, will take place at the Bidvest Stadium on 19 July. It will use a semi-final format, with the winners of both semi-finals progressing to square off in the final on the same day.

The Charity Showdown has been organised by e.tv, in association with OpenView HD. “Soccer is one of the most popular sports in this country, and education is one of the most critical childhood development tools. The combination of the chosen charity, which gives young people the opportunity to fully partake in their education; and the solidarity of sportsmanship makes for a formidable partnership in shaping the future for many young South Africans,” said Monde Twala, group head of e.tv’s Channels Division.

“The e.tv brand is in the business of people; we are committed to ensure that our content does not only educate, but also provides for fun and family entertainment. “It is partnerships like these that assist us in ensuring a well-learned community,” Twala added. The day will also be packed with family inclusive activities happening simultaneously with the soccer games. These include a family fun zone complete with a food market, a kiddies area with child minders, jumping castles, face painters and clowns. There will also be a beer garden, VIP

hospitality, as well as a showdown concert, featuring some of South Africa’s top-selling bands. Families will also get a chance to win OpenView HD decoders throughout the day, as well as meet some of e.tv’s stars and personalities. The first semi-final match kicks off at 09:30, the next game at 12:00 and the final is scheduled for 16:00. The tournament will be broadcast live on e.tv’s OpenView HD satellite channel, giving the broadcaster a longsought test with the local football market.
