March to CUT UNITED WE STAND: In a rare showing of cooperation be tween political ene mies, student wings of the EFF, ANC and other parties marched to the Cen tral University of Technology yester day to protest against the expul sion of 12 student leaders from the CUT. Photo: Jabulani Dlamini

‘March’ a mystery Principal denies all allegations of event } Tshenolo Meruti LEARNERS and teachers of the Dr Viljoen Combined School in Willows, Bloemfontein, said on Monday they were set to embark on a “solidarity march” today in support of the school’s principal, Francois Schoon. Several learners of the school visited Express on Monday and claimed that all learners had been told to be at school that day (today) as there would be a march. They were, however, not told what the march would be about. The learners, whose names Express is in possession of but who may not be identified, told Express that most learners at the school thought the march was to get rid of their principal but that this was in fact not the case and for this reason did not want to take part in it. “We were just told by the head girl in small groups that we must all make sure that we are at school on Wednesday (today) as there will be a march and we will be told on the day what the march is about. “Most of the learners think that the march is a strike to get rid of the principal but little do they know that it is actually

DR VILJOEN COMBINED SCHOOL to keep him and save his job,” a learner said. They said they had been told that Volksblad had been invited to cover the “solidarity march” on the day. Howard Ndaba, spokesperson of the Free State Department of Education (FSDoE), said he was not aware of any such march at the school. “Maybe someone knows of this march internally but I do not know of anything.” Schoon poured cold water on plans for a march by anyone at the school when called for comment yesterday. “I am not aware of any march and no teacher will be taking part in this march,” he said. The school recently made headlines with learners at the school alleging they were

called racist and derogatory names. Media reports alleged that personnel had called some of the learners k*****s, baboons and little black b*****s. The South African Human Rights Commission (HRC) launched an investigation in May 2013 following allegations that the learners at the school had been exposed to inhumane and racist treatment from personnel, including the principal. After months of investigations, the commission found that the racist remarks made by personnel of the Dr Viljoen Combined School against black and coloured learners constituted a clear incident of hate speech. In the HRC report, personnel at the school were alleged to have said black and coloured learners at the school should go back to their township schools as their parents could not afford to pay school fees and that the learners would never succeed in life and would instead end up like their parents who worked in chain stores. The HRC called on the FSDoE to develop procedures for monitoring and reporting on initiatives to counter racism in public schools in the province.

SABC COO pays his poor FS roots little heed

} Selloane Khalane WHILE Hlaudi Motsoeneng, COO of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), pockets a cool R2,4 million in salary, the woman who raised him lives in squalor and poverty in a rundown RDP house in Qwaqwa. The 90-year-old Alina Mahlaba, Motsoeneng’s aunt who raised him from the age of three, says she raised Motsoeneng after his mother had abandoned him. Mahlaba lives with seven other family members in a dilapidated RDP house in the small village of Thaba-Bosiu in Qwaqwa. Being the only breadwinner of the household, Mahlaba says feeding eight people from her meagre pension grant is taking its toll on her. “The battle to put food on the table is a daily battle,” Mahlaba says. According to Mahlaba, Motsoeneng left home 19 years ago to look for a job after completing grade 11. “I could no longer afford to pay for his school fees, so he couldn’t complete matric,” Mahlaba explains. Mahlaba says Motsoeneng has always been an ambitious person determined to succeed at all costs. Motsoeneng has been mired in controversy following a damning report by the Public Protector Thuli Madonsela earlier this year. Madonsela found Motsoeneng had lied about completing matric at Metsimatsho High School in Qwaqwa. As dusk falls, Mahlaba scrambles for firewood in the surrounding area to keep the cold at bay in her three-room, scantily furnished RDP home. The walls of the house are charred black by smoke from the open fire in a brazier. Despite the obvious poverty in the house, Mahlaba’s eyes gleam with pride and sadness when she speaks of the man who now runs the SABC. “I carried him on my back when he was three years old,” Mahlaba says.

ALINA MAHLABA in her kitchen. The charred walls, from a tin can used for warmth in the house, are visible in the house. She tells Express Motsoeneng rarely comes home due to his tight work schedule and cannot hide her surprise when she hears of Motsoeneng’s hefty salary. Wearing worn-out sneakers and a threadbare jersey, Mahlaba says Motsoeneng built a house for his mother and father although she is the one who raised him. “I thank God for his achievements and I am happy that he has honoured his parents, but I feel like he has forgotten me,” Mahlaba says. Although she cannot hide her sadness

concerning her poor living conditions, she admits that Motsoeneng does give her money from time to time. Mahlaba cannot tell the newspaper with certainty when she last saw her nephew. With Motsoeneng battling to hold on to his position as the head of the SABC, Mahlaba is quick to defend her nephew and says Motsoeneg cannot be persecuted for not having a matric certificate. “I raised Hlaudi under poor conditions but I did the best I could,” says Mahlaba, who then asks for any food and blanket donations. ) Also see related story on page 3.

Financial records a must TYPICALLY, many small business owners are not informed of the importance of keeping accurate financial records of their business transactions. As a result, small business entrepreneurs continue operations without a clue of the status or the use of their business finances, which can prove detrimental to achieving their set business goals. The implication of this state of affairs is that the entrepreneur cannot operate their business professionally and with a systematic approach to the best of their potential. Whether your small business is registered with the CIPC (former CIPRO) or not, it is always a good idea to obtain advice and assistance from a qualified professional, especially in the initial stages of running the business. Some steps you can take to change the situation include firstly finding a bookkeeper who can assist to ensure each and every transaction is recorded in the business books by using a double-entry system. At the end of a financial period (a week, month, quarter, year, et cetera), financial statements can be drawn based on the records available from the bookkeeping system. Some financial statements will need to be audited or reviewed (based on the criteria set out in the Companies Act), while others will not. If an audit or a review is required, a registered auditor or a chartered accountant can assist to execute it, depending on the case in question. These financial records and reports can be used for purposes such as financial planning (budgeting), Sars compliance, general functional management, business plan compilation and application for funding at the bank or other financial institutions. For further assistance, MBT Accounting Services can be reached on 051-432-0144, 081-439-7752, mbtaccounting@telkomsa.net or Facebook (MBT Accounting Services) for further enquiries.

Disputes over new name } Nkareng Moloi THERE has been mixed reaction from Bluegumbosch residents regarding the naming of their local stadium after controversial SABC COO, Hlaudi Motsoeneng. Last week, the provincial geographical naming committee (PGNC) conducted a public hearing on the renaming of the Bluegumbosch Stadium at the stadium with over 100 residents attending. The residents participated in the renaming of their stadium with the most popular names being that of Orlando Pirates chairman, Dr Irvan Khoza, and Motsoeneng’s name being the most favoured. Although some of the residents were not happy with the final decision, the majority of residents who attended the hearing voted for Motsoeneng’s name. Those who voted for the stadium to be named “Hlaudi Motsoeneng” stated that he was from Qwaqwa and was flying the Qwaqwa flag high at the moment and this was how they were appreciating his good work. Thabo Mazibuko, one of the residents who is happy about the renaming, said people must appreciate his good work. “We are very happy to have our stadium named after him. He is being wrongly crucified for not having qualifications for the job he is doing. This is a symbol of appreciation,” said Mazibuko. Earlier this year, public protector Thuli Madonsela, found that Motsoeneng had lied about having a matric qualification when he was hired as the public broadcaster’s COO and that he had also given himself a massive salary increase without following proper procedures. RENAMED: The Bluegumbosch Stadium is to be named after controversial SABC chief operation officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng. Photo: Nkareng Moloi residents, shared her frustration. “I am not happy at all with the name. Hlaudi did nothing for the community of Qwaqwa. In sport we have people who contributed a lot, like Mike Mokoena and the late Jabu Khumalo, not Hlaudi,” Motloung said. Msebenzi Zwane, the acting premier, said he was happy with the name. “I am happy because our people are appreciating what they have. Hlaudi is from Qwaqwa. It would have been a bad thing if the stadium was to be named after someone from afar. “The stadium will soon be named the Hlaudi Motsoeneng Stadium since the community has decided.

“This is democracy. People are making decisions. That means they are governing,” said Zwane. Meanwhile, in a statement released by the DA shortly after the announcement, the party’s provincial leader, Patricia Kopane, said she would write to Arts and Culture MEC Mathabo Leeto to propose that the Bluegumbosch Stadium be renamed after Dr K.P.D. Maphalla, a renowned Sotho writer. “Dr Maphalla was born and raised very close to where the stadium is located in Bluegumbosch. He has contributed immensely to the Sotho language and culture and is well loved in this community,” she said.

“A GENEROUS PERSON will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:25 This is a statement of true wisdom for any person in almost any situation. Prosperity is the first reward. But in order to become prosperous a man must first deposit generosity. Generosity is the seed that must be sown. Some people might think generosity only involves money. Yet a person can be generous in various matters like love, praying for someone, helping with a task or caring for someone. The list goes on and on.

So, learn to be generous. If you want to prosper financially be generous with your money. Then you will be refreshed. Here also, you have to sow seeds of refreshing others. If you can attend to those who need to be refreshed you will be refreshed. Think of those who are depressed, lonely, broken-hearted,

without hope, sad and rejected. If you can go to people in these types of situations and be a blessing to them, you will be refreshed as well. Refreshment for them will be when you take time to do something or say something to lift them up from a bad situation. Through your heart you can bring them refreshment. See it as an honour to refresh somebody, because you cannot do it on your own. You need the Holy Spirit to help you with this. Choose today to be a person who is generous – a person who chooses to refresh others and who becomes refreshed.

Workshop on gambling held FOR the average impulsive, thrill-seeking young adult, gambling offers an ideal opportunity for “glamorous” fun and excitement. Unfortunately, this age group’s propensity to take risks is often not balanced by careful thought of consequences, and so gambling can present a dangerous pastime for them. In addition to formal gambling such as casinos, horses, the lottery and sports betting, there are many other forms of gambling to entice them. Along with betting among friends, many take risks with illegal games such as Fafi, cards and dice. Furthermore, with access to a computer and a credit card it is easy to indulge in online gambling, regardless of the fact that it is illegal in South Africa. The National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP), as South Africa’s foremost authority on gambling, is presenting workshops around the country aimed at helping young people to apply greater caution when taking risks related to gambling in particular, and life in general. The Free State workshop

Saturday at the Senekal Town Hall will be held in collaboration with the Free State Gambling and Liquor Authority (FSGLA) and the Free State government. The workshop will address invited young people and influencers in the province. NRGP executive director, Nana Magomola, said: “We want to ensure we do not condemn or judge, but rather help young people to understand the consequences of their choices in an informed and responsible way. “By applying logic and foresight to decision-making processes, youngsters can reduce risks and harms related to problem gambling and risky lifestyle choices.” As one of the speakers at the workshop, Magomola draws on her experience as a lawyer, businesswoman, gender activist and background in healthcare, government administration and the private sector. The key-note speaker will be the Free State MEC for Economic Development, Tourism, Environmental Affairs and Small Business Development Mosebenzi Zwane. He will speak about the need

to grow responsible communities. Zwane and Magomola will share a platform with Makone Nthongoa, the chief executive officer of the FSGLA. Guests will also be addressed by Palesa Mosiea, a motivational speaker, entrepreneur and director of companies with interests as widespread as property, manufacturing and the communications and events industries. She will be joined by speakers of the National Credit Regulator (NCR) and Nedbank. The day will include an industrial theatre play on taking risks responsibly, one of the NRGP’s key themes, and an interactive talk on the subject. Participants will also learn how addiction can negatively affect an entire family and community, and how to create strategies to reduce problems of addiction and better manage finances. “Our concern is for young people who gamble, or who may one day choose to gamble, that they do so knowing what the risks are and how to minimize them,” Magomola said.

Molemela always welcome at Bloem Celtic } Sidwell Guduka PETRUS MOLEMELA, the Bloemfontein Celtic founder and former club owner, expressed his delight about the new ownership of the team. The 81-year-old said he believed the new Celtic boss, Max Tshabalala, understood the club’s culture and he would get his backing. Tshabalala is a well-known business tycoon whose family bought Celtic from Jimmy Augousti last week. He is now chairman of the Mangaung-based club. The no-nonsense Tshabalala paid a visit to Molemela to get his blessing. “I saw it fit that I should personally come to see him and inform him about the latest developments at Celtic and to receive blessings from him as I start this journey,” Tshabalala explained. “The Molemelas should be recognised by the club for the role

they had played to make Celtic what it is today. “Ntate Molemela will always be part of this club. He must have his own office at the club’s headquarters,” said Tshabalala. Molemela was made life president of Celtic a few years ago, but has made some startling claims upon the change of ownership. “I was just a life president by title. Today, Tshabalala appointed me officially for that title and I signed the necessary documents. I’m very touched,” Molemela said. “When I sold Celtic to Jimmy Augousti in 2001, part of the deal was to keep it in the province. I’m happy he sold it to the Tshabalalas who stay in Bloemfontein. “Max is like my son, because he grew up in the Celtic family as he used to play for our Colts when I was still in charge of the club. “He understands the culture of Celtic. Hopefully he will take it to the highest level.” The “White Head”, as Molemela is affectionately known in soccer

circles, has appealed to Celtic fans and the people of the Free State to support Tshabalala. “I have no doubt Tshabalala is the right man to take Celtic to the highest level. “Please show him support and attend the club’s matches in large numbers. “Let’s make sure that Celtic play in front of capacity crowds week in and week out,” Molemela said. “I’m going to try and attend all Celtic’s home matches this season, starting with the game against Black Aces in Bloemfontein.” Tshabalala, who announced the new management of the club last week, said he would make it possible for Molemela to attend all the matches he wanted to see. “Even if he has to fly to the games we’ll cover the costs of his flights,” he said. Khumbulani Konco and Chabeli Motshamai have been retained as CEO and COO of the club, respectively, while Rali Ramabodu joined as the managing director.

Pirates hoist CBL Cup high } Sidwell Guduka

ORLANDO PIRATES tasted their first success of the new season, after beating Kaizer Chiefs 6-5 on penalties to clinch the Carling Black Label Cup at a packed FNB Stadium in Soweto on Saturday. Both sides failed to produce a winner after 90 minutes of an uninspiring soccer match which ended scoreless, much to the disappointment of the fans. Despite the victory, Pirates coach Vladimir Vermezovic had mixed feelings about the performance, spotting a lot of room for improvement ahead of their MTN8 Cup encounter against Supersport United on Saturday. “We are obviously satisfied with the result. I thought we controlled the game, but unfortunately we

couldn’t win it during 90 minutes,” Vermezovic told reporters after the match. “I think we are on the right track and I now know that I am close to my starting 11 for the match against SuperSport,” he said. “There are a couple of areas that we need to work on, like finishing. We can’t go 90 minutes without scoring a goal. We’ll have to rectify that mistake before the next game. I think we are 80% ready for the season,” he added. Meanwhile, Chiefs coach Steward Baxter said he was happy with his team’s display against Bucs this past weekend, despite losing a penalty that would have won them a trophy in regulation time. “I thought we created better chances than Pirates, and even though we weren’t excellent we were

pretty good on the day. Penalties are not our thing,” Baxter said. Chiefs will entertain Black Aces in the MTN8 Cup at FNB Stadium on Sunday, and they will have to improve their performance if they want to progress to the semifinals. “The players need to get better and we need to improve as a team. We have seen how tough it is to win, because even though we had a good last season, we can’t say it was great because we didn’t win anything,” said Baxter. Pirates’ Carling Black Label success against Amakhosi last Saturday was their third since the competition’s inception four years ago – all their wins came via penalty shoot-outs. Last year, Chiefs defeated Pirates 1-0 to lift the pre-season “Beer Cup” at the same venue.

TSHEPO CHAINE says Bloemfontein Celtic will carry the momentum of their recent Charity Showdown triumph into the 2014-’15 season, starting with the MTN 8 Cup match against Bidvest Wits this weekend. Phunya Sele Sele will look to register their second win over Bidvest Wits when the sides square off at the Bidvest Stadium in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, on Friday at 20:00. Ernst Middendorp’s men overpowered Gavin Hunt’s charges by 1-0 during their Charity Showdown battle at the same venue two weeks ago, and Chaine believes that his side will have a psychological edge. “I think with us winning the Charity Showdown there is surge of confidence within the camp at the moment. It augurs well for us to go with a winning mentality into the new season and the match on Friday night. “We have to go out there and make sure that we will win and progress to the next stage of the tournament. It will be a difficult game, but one that we can win,” he says. “We have a lot of quality strikers and ball players in our team. I have no doubt that we will beat Wits in their own backyard and go on to win the trophy for our loyal supporters,” he adds. The 19-year-old recently joined Siwelele from Black

GRAIG JOUBERT

SOUTH AFRICAN referee Craig Joubert will officiate the 2014 Vodacom Super Rugby final between the Waratahs and the Crusaders in Sydney on Saturday, South African New Zealand and Australia Rugby (Sanzar) announced on Monday. The kick-off at the ANZ Stadium is scheduled for 11:40.

This will be the third time the 36-year-old ref is in a Super Rugby final. His first final at this level was in 2010 in Soweto between the Bulls and the Stormers. He also refereed the final in Hamilton last year between the Chiefs and the Brumbies. Joubert, who was also the man in the middle in the Rugby World

Cup final in New Zealand in 2011, will be assisted by Steve Walsh and James Leckie on the sidelines, and George Ayoub as television match official. The trio are from Australia. ) Who do you think will be crowned the Vodacom Super Rugby champions on Saturday? Tweet us at Express_News03

Urbans FC, an amateur team from Botshabelo. “I’m very excited to be part of Siwelele family. I have to work very hard to show that I’m capable of winning the trust of the coach. It will not be easy because there is stiff competition for the striker’s position and I must give my best to prove myself.” Chaine will wear jersey number 21 as he competes with Gabadinho Mhango and Joel Mogorosi for a spot in the starting line-up at the Free State side. “Gabadinho and Joel are two great strikers. Celtic are a big team and they have to have quality forwards to compete for a spot in the starting eleven. Having competition up front is good because it makes everyone one of us give their best. “I’m looking forward to my first season in the PSL. I want to repay the faith the coach and management have in me by scoring goals. I have not set myself any target in terms of the number of goals I want to score, but will try and bury every chance I get. My job as a striker is to create and score goals,” Chaine concludes. ) The Bloemfontein Celtic Supporters Club has organised a trip to Johannesburg for the Wits-Celtic match on Friday. Return fare is R300, including a match ticket. Buses depart on Friday at 12:30 from the old Celtic offices in Elizabeth Street, Bloemfontein. Contact Moipone on 076-824-7183.
