Roads get a facelift

R1,4 billion to be spent on development of infrastructure } Selloane Khalane THE Free State’s road network is set to get a R1,4 billion facelift from the provincial government, Public Works MEC Sam Mashinini recently announced. An additional R80 million has been allocated for the repair of potholes across the province. Mashinini, who also heads the province’s economic cluster, told Express three contractors have been appointed and repair works have already begun. Some of the roads being developed include the 28 km road between Deneysville and Sasolburg in the Metsimaholo Municipality. According to Mashinini, construction is already in progress and the duration of the project is 18 months. Work on a 62 km road between Wepener and Zastron, which started in April this year, will be completed by March 2015. Mashinini said in Parys, as a measure to improve the flow of traffic, the Parys through-route has been implemented. “The 73 km road between Kroonstad and Vredefort is being rehabilitated and the project will be completed by October 2015,” he said. The economic cluster comprises the Human Settlement Department’s MEC Olly Mlamleli, as well as her Roads and Transport and Agriculture counterparts, Butana Komphela and Mamiki Qabathe, respectively. At a media briefing, Mashinini, who is the cluster’s chairperson, said the province is central to the country, which makes the Free State a logistics hub for goods and services to be transported through the province. “The massive expansion of infrastructure will create decent opportunities,” Mashinini said.

Letshaba claims bragging rights } Sidwell Guduka TEBOHO LETSHABA is the best soccer journalist in Mzansi. Letshaba, who works for SABC radio and television, has been crowned the official MTN8 Last Journo Standing for 2014. He won the bragging rights after winning an all-expenses paid trip to watch the EUFA Champions League final in Berlin, Germany, in May 2015. The MTN8 Last Journo Standing competition was open to all soccer journalists from press, radio, television and online in South Africa. Journalists who participated in the football trivia were asked random questions about the MTN8 competition and football in general, and Letshaba has proven to be the journalist with the most football knowledge in South Africa. “I’m really excited. Winning this competition for me is recognition more than anything else. It goes to show that I’ve got the best football knowledge, more

than all the journalists countrywide,” Letshaba told Express. The Viljoenskroon-born Letshaba won the competition at provincial level before he made it to the elimination round where he competed against winners from other provinces in Johannesburg. For his efforts, he was awarded an iPad Mini worth R6 000. At the provincial final in Bloemfontein, Letshaba competed against football brains such as Mpho Sekharume (The Weekly), Baagedi Setlhora (Daily Sun), Dan Xangaza (Daily Sun), Khothatso Mokone (Mangaung Issue), Pule Lechesa (Dumelang News), Becker Semela (The New Age) and Sidwell Guduka (Express) – just to mentioned a few – and he came out tops. In 2013, the multi-award winning Letshaba won the competition at provincial level and he made it all the way to the top-two, but he lost to Tiyani Mabasa of Kick Off in the final. “It would have been a double tragedy had I lost again in the

televised final. Remember, I had made it to the final last year and I was eliminated. Honestly, I was under pressure to win this time around. But I’m happy I came out tops in the final against Clyde Tlou of SuperSport,” he said. Letshaba also congratulated his fellow members of the media from across the country for taking part in the competition, especially those who won at provincial level. “This competition is always exciting and every journo should enter because it reflects how much football knowledge we have as journalists. “The biggest mistake we tend to make as journalists is that we focus more on local football. Unfortunately, journalists are messengers to our readers and listeners, and we should do proper research before conveying the message. So, it is important to have proper knowledge of local and international football,” Letshaba advised. Previous winners of this competition are Nkareng Matshe

Pick up your cross and follow Jesus } Pastor Mutombo Kumwimba MATTHEW 16:24: Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny himself and pick up his cross and follow Me”. Let us think a little . . . “pick up your cross and follow Me”. What does a cross mean? A cross means troubles. Jesus carrying the cross was an undeniable victory in the spirit, but physically he was afraid of that cross because it was trouble indeed, that is why God sent an angel to strengthen Him physically. So to us the cross that Jesus refers to is sickness, disease, death, failure, limitations, rejection and other difficulties in life. In other words Jesus meant to say “if truly you love Me, then nothing should separate you from Me”. Pick up your cross and follow Me means: “If you are sick, follow Me with your sickness, don’t let it keep you away from Me. “If you are poor, follow Me with your poverty; don’t let it keep you away from Me. “If you are rejected, follow Me with your rejection; don’t let it keep you away from Me.” Jesus is the only answer to all fundamental issues in life. “Follow Me,” He said.

But what we see today amongst Christians are frightening and disturbing. When trouble comes, you stop praying; when sickness comes, you doubt Jesus’ ability to heal you. When poverty comes, your first place of solution is the bank for more debt . . . when will you carry your cross? When will you endure your hardship in life? When will you become a man of character? Because the only training field for real Christians is the weight of their own crosses on their own shoulders. What qualify us to be true Christians are not our own words we speak, but our actions under the weight of the cross on our shoulders. Jesus never denied or complained about His cross, so why do we? Romans 8:35: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? It is a question to us Christians. Many today complain and end up saying they feel offended towards God . . . The majority of disciples died in the process

of preaching and writing the Bible, yet they did not complain; but that is not the case with today’s Christian; we want everything easy and comfortable. That is why the Christians of tomorrow will not have much to benefit from today’s Christians. Matthew 10:32-33: Whoever acknowledges Me before others, I will acknowledge Him before my Father. But whoever disowns Me before others, I’ll disown him before my Father. We are truly acknowledging Jesus before the people with our mouths while our hearts are far from Him due to the weight of the cross on our shoulders. In other words, Jesus meant to say to all Christians from every corner of the earth, from every race and every class “what you do with Me today will determine how I will treat you tomorrow when the end of time is here” – the choice is yours. ) To hear and learn more about these messages visit us at the Joe Solomon School in Heidedal every Sunday from 09:00. You can also send your prayer request to 071-214-9404. We invite you also to the healing, deliverance and anointing water service on 31 October. We have seen God’s hands and we will see it again and again. God bless you, dear readers.

Legend laid to rest; legacy will live on } Tladi Moloi QWAQWA. – Hundreds of mourners gathered in Maphiring, Namahadi, on Saturday to pay their respects to Dr Tshiame Kenneth Mopeli, the founder of the Dikwankwetla Party of South Africa and former chief minister of Qwaqwa. Mopeli died on 1 October in the Manapo Hospital in Qwaqwa following a long illness and years of battling with cancer of the colon. The funeral service started at 08:00 and Mopeli was laid to rest around 14:45 at the Thaba-Bosiu Cemetery. Moeketsi Lebesa, the president of the Dikwankwetla Party of South Africa (DPSA), said: “Dr Mopeli deserves glory, because he worked for us. We are what we are today because of him.” He said Mopeli’s name would be written in golden letters when the history books were rewritten. “We’ll have his public lecture every year. We want our children to know about him,” he said. Lebesa described Mopeli as a legend of pure love. “He was very loyal and guided me in politics. I am proud to say I am a product of his,” he said. Hlaudi Motsoeneng, the SABC chief operating officer (COO), said Mopeli had been known in the whole of South Africa. “He started the school in Qwaqwa in his time. Everyone who wanted an education came here,” he said. He said it was time that some of the politicians learnt from Mopeli. “No one can deny that he had worked hard during his time. CHAMPIONS: Brebner High players celebrate their Nedbank/Grey College Soccer Tournament success after beating Kloof High 4-0 in the final at Grey College's Windmill Park in Bloemfontein. Photo: Voight Mokone

EDDIE JONES, the Brebner High School soccer coach, was smiling from ear to ear after his charges had defeated Kloof High School 4-0 in the Nedbank/Grey College Soccer Tournament final. The one-sided match, which produced all four goals in the first half, was played in front of a good crowd at Grey College’s Windmill Park in Bloemfontein last Tuesday. “I’m excited about our success in the tournament. I thought we deserved to win it because we played well. “I’m really proud of my boys,” Jones told Express after the match. “Our plan was not to concede a goal during the whole tournament, but we conceded one. We defended our box very strongly throughout the tournament. Our defenders did a great job and that allowed midfielders and strikers to do their job as well,” he said. After losing to the THS Louis Botha in the Sanlam Kay Motsepe provincial final in August, Jones gave his troops three-and-half weeks to rest. “We only began our preparations for the Nedbank competition five weeks prior to the

event. We trained four, five times a week focusing more on our fitness. “We knew 140 minutes of football a day was going to take the legs. So we had to be fit. Also, we did some basic ball work,” said the coach. The Nedbank/Grey College Cup was the second Brebner had lifted this year after winning another tournament in Durban earlier this year.
