Mandela’s words an inspiration } Sidwell Guduka

NELSON MANDELA, the former president of South Africa and Nobel Peace Prize winner, died peacefully at his Houghton home in Johannesburg on Thursday. Mandela was admitted to the Mediclinic Heart Hospital in June with a recurring lung infection and had been in the hospital for almost three months. He was discharged in September and was receiving medical care at his home until he passed away. Mandela spent 27 years in jail before being freed in 1990 and went on to become South Africa’s first black president in 1994. He died at the age of 95. “I stand here before you not as a prophet, but as a humble servant of you, the people. Your tireless and heroic sacrifices have made it possible for me to be here today. I therefore place the remaining years of my life in your hands.” Mandela said in his speech during the first day of his release in Cape Town on 11 February 1990. Here is a collection of quotes that personify his spirit:

ties. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to see realised. But my Lord, if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” “I hate race discrimination most intensely and in all its manifestations. I have fought it all during my life; I fight it now, and will do so until the end of my days. Even although I now happen to be tried by one whose opinion I hold in high esteem, I detest most violently the set-up that surrounds me here. It makes me feel that I am a black man in a white man’s court. This should not be. (First court statement, 1962). “I was made, by the law, a criminal, not because of what I had done, but because of what I stood for, because of what I thought, because of my conscience.” (Statement during trial, 1962).

‘If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.’

Mandela put 27 years as a political prisoner behind him and negotiated with the apartheid oppressors to launch the first democratic elections in 1994.

“Nobody knows when they are going to die. Even though I am an old man, I do not dwell on the possibility of death. Death comes when it is ready.”

– Nelson Mandela

“If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.” (From Long Walk to Freedom, 1995).

“During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony with equal opportuni-

“Death is something inevitable. When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace. I believe I have made that effort and that is, therefore, why I will sleep for the eternity.”

“I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not

give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death.” “Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. Like slavery and Apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. YOU can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.”

Madiba was part of a rare breed 2 TIMOTHY (4:6 to 8): “For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept my faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” Though the world mourns the passing of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, it’s an open secret that Mandela like Paul the Apostle, had fought a good fight and finished his course. This is the man who sacrificed his freedom so that we could be free, he risked his life to save our lives and spent decades in jail so that we could live in the comfort of our homes. Mandela was a paragon of human virtue, a statesman extraordinaire, a political troubadour of note, a liberator par excellence, a deluxe negotiator, a catalyst of freedom and indeed, humility personified. The apartheid regime labelled him persona non grata for his love of the people. The late Mandela was a rare breed of African leadership. Like the prophet Moses, Mandela proverbially parted the waters of apartheid for the oppressed black nation to cross to a promised democratic South Africa. As if emulating the prophet Joseph, Mandela magnanimously provided for those who had earlier mauled him. In a typical Jesus Christ modus, he forgave those who had persecuted him and had spat in his face. He unreservedly forgave them, for they knew not what they were doing. Mandela was he who let children come to him, for the kingdom of Heaven is such as theirs. Paradoxically, Mandela said: “I’m not a saint. Unless you think a saint is a sinner who keeps on trying.”

Readers say Mandela was there when the ANC Youth League was established on 7 September 1944. He attended the adoption of the Freedom Charter in Kliptown on 26 June 1955. He witnessed the formation of Umkhonto we Sizwe on 16 December 1961. Mandela audaciousLEHLOHONOLO ly accepted the NYETANYANE presidential baton from Oliver Tambo on 5 July 1991. He received the Nobel Peace Prize on 15 October 1993 and the world marvelled with awe when this iconic leader ascended to presidency on 10 May 1994. Mandela saw his beloved country host a rugby and soccer World Cup in 1995 and 2010 respectively. In the light of the above, who will dare contest my assertion that Mandela’s life was a life well lived and his time was a time well spent? None will forget his prophetic statement when he said: “Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another or suffer the indignity of being the skunk of the world. The sun shall never set on so glorious a human achievement.” Rest in peace, your excellency, Madiba, Dalubunga, Ngqolamsila, Velabembentsele, Yemyem.

THE Northern Cape Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison warns motorists that no leniency will be shown as it continues its 365 Days Road Safety approach in the province. The intensified 365 Days Road Safety coincides with government’s vision to curb road death by half in 2020. The department’s provincial traffic had an intensified four day operation in Kathu and Postmasburg. This is aimed at intensifying law enforcement and keeping all road users safe. The two areas have seen an increase in fatal crashes and an increase in accidents due to the increase in vehicles and population. This as a result of the booming mining activities in the areas. During the four day operations in the two areas, 1 335 vehicles have been stopped and searched, 869 drivers screened for alcohol, 28 drivers arrested for drunken driving and 36 vehicles confiscated. In addition, 241 summonses were issued, one driver arrested for inconsiderate driving, five public transport vehicles impounded and illegal cigarettes and drugs were also confiscated during the traffic and road safety operations. More collaborative efforts include the National Road Traffic Management Corporation together with the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison’s Provincial Traffic. This also includes the road safety and law enforcement and other stakeholders having joined operations. The operations were aimed at curbing the number of drunken drivers on the roads amongst other aspect of road safety and law enforcement.

Griquas, Kings still excluded V Gerdie Karstens

“WE must play in the top league again.” A disappointed Arni van Rooyen, general manager of the Griquas rugby team, said after it had been confirmed the team along with the Eastern Province Kings would not be playing in the Super 15 Premier rugby series next year. The South African Rugby Union (Saru) said that in a special meeting of the board in the Cape. Saru confirmed in a press statement that there would be no vote irrespective of whether the current 6-8 system or the 8-6 structure were used. The latter would have guaranteed the inclusion of both the Griekwas and Kings. According to the statement, six rugby unions had indicated they were not in favour of the format that would guarantee their teams’ inclusion. It was then decided that it would be a futile exercise to vote as the 75% needed to change the system would not be

reached. The six unions that were not in favour of the change were the same six that had earlier this year voted against the Kings and Griquas. This decision means the Griquas will play in the Currie Cup First Division while the Pumas will become the sixth team in the Premier League. This is also bad news for the Kings who would have been promoted along with the Griquas as they had finished second in the First Division. Friday’s Indaba was the Griquas’ last hope for entry in the Premier League in 2014 after they had lost out in the promotion-relegation battle with the Pumas earlier this year. It was hoped there would be consensus reached regarding the Griquas participation, but Van Rooyen said the status quo would remain. “We are disappointed, but we must focus on the Vodacom Cup and win the First Division Currie Cup,” he said.
