Businesses must come on board for sponsorship
} Boipelo Mere THE John Taolo Gaetsewe Region is in desperate need of female boxers to put them on the map. This was highlighted by Malusi Boyce, the owner of the JTG Motaung Boxing Club, who hosted his first and successfullyrated boxing tournament in Batlharos in an effort to revive the sport. The owner and coach was not
proud to mention during an interview with Express Northern Cape that alcohol had already caused a lot of damage to the lives of the youth. After hosting and organising the tournament without any sponsorship, Boyce also pointed out that local businesses needed to come on board in terms of sponsorships to uplift their own children. Boyce said even though all
promises had faded away come the day of the tournament, he was motivated to cover everything for the love of boxing. He saw it as a way of giving back to his community in Kuruman, his home town, by starting the club from scratch. He mentioned that he had also identified the perfect intersection for the tournament where he took his chances of competing for audiences.
“I chose the busiest spot in the village to set up the boxing ring in an effort to draw a big enough audience. This was the first boxing tournament in my area in an effort to revive boxing in my community. It was sharing the interaction with a nearby bottle store, a crowded gambling (dice) spot, a taxi stop and a supermarket which were all opposite the police station,” said the coach with a satisfactory smile.
He mentioned that he was positive that even though most of the guest teams did not make it to the tournament for various reasons the tournament touched the hearts of many. “I went back to plough back into my community, thus I will continue with promoting the game as long as the community continues to show their support like they did during the tournament,” added the coach proudly.

Hunger hits hard } Boipelo Mere
MOSES NHLAPO, Ward 18 councillor, has pledged to knock on doors in an effort to raise money and donations for the A re Thusaneng Community Organisation based in his ward in Kimberley’s Club 2000. This is after the volunteers within the organisation went the extra mile to fight poverty and hunger among the children from the ward. The group of women saw fit to rather turn the Club 2000 park into a home where children receive food daily, rather than allow criminals and gang members to use it as their hideout. Nhlapo made his promise after witnessing more than 50 children enjoying the homecooked dumplings and beef prepared by the women last week. Apart from the soup kitchen, which struggles to feed the increasing amount of children with the daily budget it is restricted to, the women wanted to find a way to continue giving more children daily meals. According to Tshidi Majola, one of these women, they came up with a solution after realising that more children came to the soup kitchen during the school holidays. “It is a reality that some of these children are hungry due to their poor backgrounds. The only place where they can get a nutritious meal is at school which is closed for the holidays. “Some of these children’s parents spend the whole day at work and can only prepare a decent meal for them after work. Thus we saw the need as a community to step in and
save the situation,” said Majola. She explained that she and five other women had taken food out of their cupboards to cook on the day. “We know most of these children, as we see them and their parents daily. Thus it was not a difficult task to compile a list of them and invite them for a meal at the park.” A total of 51 children were registered, but it was no surprise that more showed up. The volunteers aim to set up their own fireplace at the park and continue to keep the fire burning. They appeal to the community and businesses to assist with sponsorship and donations to make the project a success and help feed more children. “We would love to continue the programme after the re-opening of school by cooking here daily so that the children can enjoy a meal on their way home from school. That way we will also be boosting them to be able to finish their homework.” Nhlapo approved of the initiative and therefore promised to assist the volunteers in campaigning for donations and sponsors. “This will be another effort showing the community that the Club 2000 community cares and has a good side. We might also repair Club 2000’s tarnished image of being known as a rough place. We will be turning this park into a home where children can relax and play safely on a full stomach. The parents can now also pass here freely,” concluded Nhlapo. The councillor urged more parents to come forward in making the project a success “in an effort to save our children”.

THE Kimberley Boys’ High School will be representing the Northern Cape in the upcoming national finals of the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement(SAASTA) on 4 December. They were amongst 60 participating schools in the regional finals who were chosen on the basis of their winning essays selected by the SAASTA. The topic of the essay was How will the huge scientific investment in
the SKA affect our lives in South Africa? The SKA is the world’s biggest telescope and will be co-located in South Africa and Australia. The aim of the SAASTA debates is to foster critical thinking amongst young learners from gr. 9, gr. 10 or gr. 11 and to encourage people to address issues that affect their communities. The school will be competing against eight other schools from other provinces. Some of the issues may be related to water problems and
challenges and more. The learners will further use confidence in public speaking and team spirit to experience for themselves how to use science and technology in problem solving. The experience to develop research, critical thinking and information literacy skills will also come in handy for the learners. According to the SAASTA, research shows that this form of debate encourages critical innovative thinking and that interest in science and technology can lead to a more productive economy.

Church welcomes Bishop Jacobs ADULLAM ASSEMBLIES, a communitycentric congregation in Postmasburg, has consecrated Evangelist Hendré Jacobs as its presiding bishop in a three-day conference held at the Postdene Community Hall. The Crimson Conference included a leadership seminar, a gospel show and the official episcopal ordination service on the morning of Sunday, 5 October. The leadership seminar focussed on the identity of the pastor as a shepherd and it was aptly themed Leader-Sheep Conference. Delegates from all over South Africa attended this informative one-day session. The purpose of the Crimson Conference was to rebrand the congregation, which was previously known as the Hephzibah House of Prayer. Adullam Assemblies is a dynamic ministry under the leadership of Hendré and Gertrude Jacobs. Michelle Ayton, local branch administrator, explained where the name of the church came from. “People would think that our name is of Muslim origin, but it’s taken from the Bible passage 1 Samuel 22:1-2: David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him. And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul, gathered to him. And he became commander over them. And there were with him about four hundred men. She also presented the new corporate logo of the church. “The word church is a poor translation of the word ecclesia, since it implies a sacred building, or temple. A more accurate translation would then be ‘assembly’, because the term ecclesia was used to refer to a group of people who had been called out to a meeting,” Ayton explained during her presentation. The church has newly-established branches in Postmasburg and Pretoria and is in advanced processes to acquire three more branches from congregations with apostolic links with Bishop Hendré Jacobs. The gospel show was themed Gospelfest: Judah’s Shout and included performances by Shaunette Heyns, Patricia Erasmus and the 2014 Tsantsabane Idol, Mpho Maroane. The gospelfest attracted huge interest and was well-attended by community members. The Sunday morning was dedicated to the episcopal installation of Bishop Hendré Jacobs. It was a day of ecclesial pomp as the congregants of Adullam Assemblies filled the room in a mix of crimson and grey, which are the official colours of the church.

Jacobs is a published author, social entrepreneur, motivational speaker and community leader. A Postmasburg native, married to Gertrude and father of three children, Hendré has made his mark as a hands-on church leader working tirelessly towards community upliftment. Speakers had high praise for his sacrificial leadership and homiletic finesse. During the ordination ritual, various pastors laid their hands upon the bishop’s head in true Pentecostal fashion. “This is one of the most important moments in my life,” Jacobs said. The interim central executive council and the draft constitution were presented as part of the legal proceedings. Jacobus Mogoto and Jelico Theys have been added as elders to the local church council. The church has declared the Crimson Conference a runaway success and will continue to serve the community.

Trust adopts traditional talent } Boipelo Mere THE John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) Developmental Trust sealed off Heritage Month when they handed over a bank cheque of R10 000 to the Dialogane Tsa Tlhaping Traditional Group. The group hails from Manyeding in the Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality. But this is not an ordinary donation. It is the first step to the beginning of a fruitful journey with the group. After an exceptional performance at the Heritage Day celebration at Manyeding, the trust identified the group as the first one ever to be adopted. The Dialogane Tsa Tlhaping Traditional Group will be adopted by the trust until Heritage Month next year 2015 where the adoption process will see the trust addressing all developmental needs of the group for a period of one year. According to Modiri Gabaatlhole, the communications officer of the JTG Developmental Trust, this has been marked as the first group to be adopted by the trust. “We have never adopted any traditional group before. “We have always assisted traditional groups with financial assistance, purchase of equipment and more, but not adoption,” he clarified. He said that there was no criteria used in identifying the group except for the good performance of the young kids on the day. “We just saw young kids performing who just needed assistance and we intervened. We

are hoping this assistance will continue even after Dialogane Tsa Tlhaping’s term has lapsed. We are setting a precedent for groups in the JTG that the trust is always watching and will assist in any way possible.” The donation to the traditional group was emphasised by the JTG Developmental Trust CEO, Tumelo Mpolokeng, when he was quoted saying: “The donation and
adoption fall within our public benefit activities being Arts and Culture. “We as the trust are driven by community development and Dialogane Tsa Tlhaping fits well within our vision of creating self-reliance within our communities. “As a community-based development organisation, the John Taolo Gaetsewe Developmental Trust is
mindful that success is inevitable in life and with empowering our communities we are ascertaining that,” continued the CEO. The leader of the traditional group, Kealeboga Mashopa, gladly said that the donation would help them improve their status as a group where they lacked a few things. “With this year-long adoption from the trust, we will grow as a
group and be recognised nationwide. “We are grateful for having caught the eye of the trust and we can only reward them with the best that they have vested upon us,” she said. She continued that the group had not succeeded in entering for the 2014 Satma Awards like in 2013, because of a lack of funds to release their new CD.

Forum appoints new board THE Northern Cape Older Persons Forum (NCOPF) board of directors for the next two years was elected during the annual general meeting held last week at the Horseshoe Conference Centre in Kimberley. The NCOPF was officially launched in October 2012 in Upington, with the purpose of advocating the rights of Older Persons. The NCOPF consists of two representatives from each of the district older persons forums, who in turn are elected from each of the local older persons forums that exist in each municipal area. The committee ensures that information is filtered from and to grassroots level, local, district, provincial and national government. The NCOPF meets on a quarterly basis, where older persons are afforded the opportunity to discuss problems they face in their respective communities. Women’s laundry growing AN Anglo American business unit, Kumba Iron Ore’s Kolomela Mine, has empowered a small group of women to make a big impact at the mine. Thousands of overalls and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) of the Kolomela Mine go through the hands of this dynamic team who make sure that it is clean and fresh to wear again the next day. These young women’s laundry business has established itself as Kolomela Mine’s best friend when it comes to the hygiene of its employees’ PPE. The Dirt Friend is the aptly descriptive name. “We chose this name as we felt that we were the best to render services when it came to cleaning up dirt,” says Ikeleng Motlopi, shareholder and one of the founder members of The Dirt Friend. The business has grown rapidly over the past few years. After starting with only five employees in 2010, it currently employs 17 people. It has two laundry facilities – one in town and one at the Kolomela Mine – where it provides a service to both the mine and households. “We have secured a contract with the mine until 2016. “Kolomela reached out to us right from the beginning. They helped us to start the business and provided us with training to be able to render proper services. They also supplied us with machinery and materials,” says Motlopi. “We enjoy being entrepreneurs, although it is one of the most challenging journeys ever. We are happy with the progress made. We are on the journey of growth,” the three women say.
