Homeless } Tladi Moloi
“WHERE should we go from here, because we don’t have a place to live?” That was the question posed by some of the people who had illegally pitched tents on the municipal land which is known by many as “Hlokoloza” at Fateng tse Ntsho near Paul Roux. Express Eastern Free State published the story in last week’s edition where the illegal shacks were removed by the Red Ants, a task force team in both Fouriesburg and Paul Roux. Thereafter many people were left homeless and now the three tents which have been pitched on the site by some of the people who were evicted from their shacks are a true reflection that they have nowhere else to go. During Express Eastern Free State’s visit to the site a heartbreaking situation was found where men and women were sharing the two tents to sleep at night. It was also lunch time for the poor people during the visit. Express Eastern Free State has learnt that in order for the people to eat, good Samaritans cook in the location and bring them food. This has been happening since the second day after the shacks were removed. Mathapelo Lephuthing (49) said she had decided to sleep with those people on the site because of the (pictured) grandmother. “I feel their pain and my husband understands that I’ll live with them until they get a place to stay. “They are our people and we cannot just let them suffer. I would have loved to accommodate them at my place, but the house is too small,” she said. Lephuthing said those people slept there on the first day without any roof over them. She said people

I pitched it on Monday after spending a few nights under the trees. I don’t know what will happen from now, but if they chase me away anytime from now I won’t come back.” Mokete Lephuthing (32) said he had managed to get a place to live after his shack had been disman-
tled. However, he said he had spent a couple of nights with the destitute people adding that an injury to one was an injury to all. “It is not safe for these women so we look after them at night. We only sleep in the morning when they are awake,” he concluded. Tjhetane Mofokeng, the executive mayor of the Dihlabeng Local Municipality, said they were aware of the tents and added that they would make sure that they

vincial government about the two sites in Fouriesburg and Paul Roux. “These people should wait until we get back to them with answers,” he said.

MRI was unveiled at hospital } Tladi Moloi
JOSE FERNANDES, district manager: Philips Healthcare, said they were proud to install the first Philips 1.5T MRI at the Mediclinic Hoogland in Bethlehem. He said with innovative stream technology the digital MRI could produce better image quality and faster MRI examinations which meant less stress on the patient, but more importantly advanced applications could be done, which would also result in better diagnostics for the patient. He spoke at the official opening of the prestigious new MRI scanner which brought cutting edge medical technology to the Free State. The event took place at the Mediclinic on Friday. Fernandes said the project had been on the go for a number of months and he was happy that they were opening it on Friday. He said he was sure that Dr. Mogoeemang Papi Africa, the radiologist, was more than ready to use the machine to serve the patients in the community. “To my knowledge this is the first machine in the region. MRI is a very important modality in today’s imaging and diagnostic world. I think this opens a number of opportunities for different examinations to be done in the communities whereas patients would either go without it or had to go outside of Bethlehem for the service. This really provides a new service which the community did not have before,” he said. Africa said the challenges which they had were mainly related to having to refer patients

He said now that the unit was there they would be able to investigate and make a fast diagnosis. He added that they were also extremely proud of the new MRI, the Ingenia 1.5 Tesla, that had been installed recently at the hospital. The machine is state-of-the-art direct digital technology and the only one of its kind in Southern
Africa. “This is because it has a wide bore which ensures more space inside thus decreasing the possible experience of claustrophobia that some patients experience with some of the other MRIs in the country.” Africa said that it is extremely advanced technology and his staff was trained to use the equipment. “We are looking forward to send our patients for scans from now on,” he said.

Makgoe motivates learners for the ANA } Tladi Moloi TATE MAKGOE, the MEC of Education in the Free State, has called on parents to support the 408 094 learners in gr. 1 to 6 and 9 who started writing the Annual National Assessment (ANA) examinations yesterday. The examinations will end on Friday. He said the parents could get involved in their children’s homework by using learner workbooks and getting ANA exemplar question papers. He said they should also discuss possible answers with them so that they could pass the examination. Makgoe said the ANA will assess learner literacy and numeracy abilities at foundation, intermediate and senior phase. Literacy is the ability to read for knowledge, write logically and communicate well, while numeracy is the ability to reason with numbers and mathematics concepts. The ANA will not be used for learner progression or promotion to the next grade, but verifies that every learner in every school is developing the language and mathematics skills appropriate for the grades and intervene where necessary. “Our ANA pass rate target this year is 60% and we are committed to rewarding every school that obtains 100% with a hall,” he said. Makgoe said to ensure the smooth administration of the 2013 ANA the department has provided the schools with: ) a 2013 ANA time table; ) a 2012 ANA report; ) a 2013 diagnostic analysis report; ) Assessment guidelines for 2013 for teachers to be able to plan for the administration of the ANA; and ) exemplars for 2013 for teachers to prepare learners for the administration of the ANA. The ANA results will be released in December.
‘Alarm bells sound’ “THE Christian Democratic Party (CDP) fully understands that the South African government can, on occasions, request personal information from Facebook and Google, in order to combat crime, but the fact that Facebook turned down all 13 requests after considering the merits, causes alarm bells to sound,” says CDP leader, Rev. Theunis Botha. Botha said he knew of people that had been victims of slander on the internet by someone hiding behind anonymity. He said although this was ignored at the time, he has realised that not all could afford the damage this could cause. “Criminal slander remains a criminal offence. But when requests are made to undermine lawful political activity, or other lawful actions of civil society, we must draw the line,” he said.

Helping hand extended to families } Tladi Moloi IT has been two weeks since the Red Ants touched down in the Eastern Free State, destroying the illegallyerected shacks on the Dihlabeng Municipality’s land in both Fouriesburg and Paul Roux. The Paul Roux Ministers Fraternal has extended a helping hand to some of the families who experienced this trauma. They donated blankets and food worth R1 000 to the residents of Paul Roux who lost everything during the eviction. Alina Mofokeng (46), who continues living on the site regardless of her shack having been removed, says she is happy with what the churches have done for them. She says she will be able to sleep with blankets like before. “It is very cold at night. You can just imagine sharing one blanket at night with the kids in the tent,” she said. Mapaseka Mthimkulu (30) says they want to thank the people who saw it fit to donate goods to those living in the open. Mthimkulu says she does not have a shack on the site, but she decided to join the homeless people in the tent. “I don’t think we should just leave them to suffer. They now need our support, that is why I sleep over with them. I only go home in the morning and come back after having

St Mathew’s Anglican Church, says after the eviction they as pastors from different churches met to decide on how they could help these people. They decided to buy food, be-
cause the homeless people cannot eat only bread. “We understand their frustration and some of them are our church members. We then asked wider for
more assistance and PEP Store in Bethlehem gave us blankets. In all we gave away 80 blankets. Half of the blankets were donated by one of the municipal officials,” he said.

Winner in trolley dash
} Tladi Moloi
DELIWE MAHLANGU, who hails from Tseki Village in Qwaqwa, was the third winner of the Setsing Super Spar Trolley Dash competition. She said she was happy to be the winner of the competition and added that it was the first time in her life that she had won anything. “I always try my luck. Competitions cost nothing, but if you are lucky they will surely reward you,” she said. Mahlangu only managed to collect groceries worth R568,55. She said 30s were not enough and pointed out that 60s would have been better. “Anyway, half a bread is better than nothing. No one would have bought what I had collected for free,”
she said. She said she would keep on entering competitions and promised to do better should she get a second chance. To enter for the competition just visit the Setsing Super Spar, Phuthaditjhaba, and buy any of the following brands, Knorrox, Knorr and Robertsons, to stand a chance of winning. Fill in the entry form and drop it in the entry box in the store. A lucky draw will be held monthly whereby the winner will be contacted for a trolley dash. The winner will be given 30 seconds to collect as many Knorrox, Knorr and Robertsons items as possible. Whatever is collected in the 30 seconds you get for free. This competition will end on 1 December.

Championship a big event
SMILEY MOFOKENG
THE South African junior and youth boxing championships will take place in Bethlehem from 22 to 28 September. According to Smiley Mofokeng, trainer and owner of the Smiling Tiger Boxing Club, it is the first time that a championship of this caliber will take place in the Eastern Free State. The event will take place in the Tiitsetsang High School’s hall, where two boxing rings will be erected. Boxing will commence at 11:00 and entry to watch the event is free as the organisers feel that they want to promote boxing as a sport. Five of the Smiling Tiger Club’s members will participate as part of the Free State team. However, Smiley says any donations to host the event will be welcome. He can be contacted on 072-8668107.

Igesund will stay, Safa insists SAFA insists they have no intention of sacking coach Gordon Igesund following the national team’s failure to qualify for the 2014 World Cup. Bafana Bafana thumped Botswana by 4-1 in Durban on Saturday, but Ethiopia’s come-from-behind win against the Central African Republic meant there was to be no progression to the final round of qualifiers. When Igesund initially took the job last year he was given a – some suggested unrealistic – mandate of reaching the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals and qualifying the team for the World Cup, despite the team having already dropped four out of six points prior to his arrival. That double failure has led to some people suggesting Igesund should be axed, but Safa head of communication, Dominic Chimhavi, insists that won’t happen. “He is the best coach available
ABDUL BASIT ADAM is chased by Bloemfontein Celtics skipper Thabo Nthethe.
Stars scoring hero living his dream } Sidwell Guduka FREE STATE STARS’ new scoring hero, Abdul Basit Adam, says he enjoys life in South Africa. The Ghanaian joined Ea Lla Koto on a three-year deal from New Edubiase at the beginning of the current season and he made his debut against SuperSport United recently. “My move to South Africa surprised me. I didn’t know Stars had been following my progress in Ghana. When my agent, Alex Ackume, told me about their interest in me, I couldn’t believe my ears. I was happy and shocked at the same time. I had always wanted to ply my trade in the Premier Soccer League. So I’m living my dream now,” Adam told Express Eastern Free State.
“They always say as a footballer you must try to be at your best all the time, because you never know who may be watching you. “The saying proved to be very true to me because I had no idea Stars had sent their scouts to watch me in action in Ghana. Look where I am today,” The 18-year-old has thanked the Bethlehem club for easing his transition into new surroundings and is now hoping to help pay them back on the pitch. “I never lived outside of Ghana before. I thought that life would be more difficult in South Africa and I would be homesick. But that is not the case, I’m enjoying every moment here. “The staff, players and fans have been incredibly welcoming. It’s like a family. Everyone helps
everyone, people talk, are kind and friendly. The club has helped me tremendously and this has made my life easier.” Adam has made his presence felt in the Absa Premiership. He managed to find the back of the net twice (against Maritzburg United and Bloemfontein Celtic) in three league matches so far this campaign and he says he wants to become the “King of Goals”. “My target is to have double figures in terms of scoring goals this season. “I know it’s not going to be easy, but with prayers and hard work anything is achievable.” Adam will be hoping to add to his scoring tally when Stars welcome Platinum Stars to the Goble Park Stadium on Saturday at 15:00.
and this is the team for the future,” Chimhavi told KickOff.com. “It would be very foolish on our side to tamper with what we have at the moment. The coach has a contract that runs until 2014 and we are going to respect that. “I can’t speak for the decision makers, but I know that in Safa’s eyes they are very happy with Gordon and the team’s performances. So we will see out his contract until 2014 and then we will review it.” There was some speculation on social networking sites that Safa had already earmarked Zambia coach, Herve Renard, as a replacement, but Chimhavi insists that is pure speculation. “There is no semblance of truth in those allegations. Why would we think about firing a coach who has brought so much stability to the team? As for Renard, those are just names being bandied around – there is no truth to that,” he says. – KickOff.com
