Efforts lead to results Mothertochild transmission rate drops from 6,8% to 3,6%
} Tladi Moloi “THE HIV mother-to-child transmission rate has dropped from 6,8% in 2010 to 3,6% in 2011 in the Free State,” said Aida Girma, the Children’s Fund representative of the United Nations (UN) in South Africa recently. She said this success showed that leadership, commitment and focused efforts on the ground could lead to tangible results. Girma said that during the launch of the provincial campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal and Child Mortality in South Africa (CARMMA). The event was held last Monday at the Phekolong Hospital in Bohlokong, Bethlehem. The purpose of the event was to ensure accelerated implementation of key strategies such as the departmental strategic plan and the millennium goals to reduce maternal, child morbidity and mortality through acceleration of provision of quality maternal and child health care, health system strengthening, community empowerment and involvement and effective collaboration with partners and relevant stakeholders. “The event was reaffirmation of the commitment of the province to accelerate the provision or quality maternal and child health care. The African Union launched the CARMMA campaign to increase action towards improving outcomes across Africa. The campaign is also recognition that the United National Millennium Development goals could not be achieved without the substantial reduction in maternal infant and child mortality rates,” she said. She said to date more than 40 African countries had joined the CARMMA movement and added that South Africa was amongst CARMMA’s most committed champions. Benny Malakoane, the Free State MEC for Health, said the Free State was a leader in many aspects. He said they were the country leaders in terms of reduction of maternal deaths by 33%. “We need to make sure that we strengthen that to attain that at all

We need to start getting our nurses smiling. The doctors need to come down to earth.” He said it had emerged that one of the causes of maternal deaths was hyperten-
sion. He added that the Free State was also the province with the most people suffering from hypertension. “In terms of CARMMA as a programme it started when we embarked with the district clinical special team and they wanted to start with antenatal care, but we said the protection of those who were
vulnerable started when a woman was of child-bearing age. Education starts there.” He said it was their duty to make sure quality care was improved in their hospitals and he added that every citizen had to have access to quality health care and that access should not be influenced by your socio-economic status.

Young South Africans awarded } Tladi Moloi THE Free State Social Development 2013 Young Community Developer of the Year Awards were held at the Falesizwe High School in Frankfort on Wednesday evening. The awards, which were aimed at recognising the exceptional work and contribution of unemployed and out of school youth in South Africa, saw the youth organisations walking home with thousands in cash for their different projects. Sisi Ntombela, the MEC for Social Development, said as the department they were hoping that the awards would encourage young men and women who selflessly gave their time and talent to improve the quality of life of their communities, to work harder and continue to inspire others. However, the department was not happy with the number of entries received for the competition. According to Bongo Nazo, senior manager: youth development, they only received 163 applications in the whole province. He said the turnout was very disappointing since they have many young people in the province. He added that they had advertised in the newspapers inviting young people to enter the competition. Tshad got third place in the Economic Empowerment Category with Tshwarella Ka Thata claiming second and the Good Foundation Organisation winning the first prize. Tidimalo Dance and Theatre Productions claimed the first prize in the Sports, Arts and Culture Category while the Thabong Youth Development Centre and Heilbron Sports and Recreation Centre finished second and third respectively. The Sizanani Youth Development Organisation scooped the first prize in the Education Category. The Tswelopele Youth Pioneers Organisation came second while the Ficksburg Technology Skills Centre came third. The last category of the night, Volunteerism, saw the Rata Batho Centre walking away with the first prize with Sesonke Youth Development coming second and the Koppies Ratha-batho Drop-in Centre claiming third prize. The awards were sponsored by the

Photo: Tladi Moloi MTN South Africa Foundation. MTN paid R100 000 for the four winners per category with each winner getting R25 000. Ntombela said: “I was touched to see one of the winners dancing and that was an indication to me that he was happy and he needed that money. Without any doubt I am sure that he would use the money wisely.”
She urged the youth to work so that they could change South Africa. She added that all of them were born with a talent and urged them to focus and use it. “I want to congratulate all the winners and hopefully next year there would be more youth clubs because we have given them money. We don’t want to see our young people falling
for things which would not take them anywhere,” she said. Oupa Motoko (32), the Good Foundation Organisation project manager, said he expected to win the awards following the number of lives that he had changed in Botshabelo. He, however, said scooping first position was just butter on the bread and added that he would make sure that they
worked harder. “The category was not difficult, but a big mountain to climb. Even though I knew that not many people of my age had done it, there were a couple of others who were a threat. I want to thank the department for their support,” he said. ) For more pictures go to expressnews.co.za.
Three face charges of malicious damage to property } Tladi Moloi MICHAEL MOJAKISANE (57), Lehlohonolo Jantjie (59) and Mohlabane Phumudi (49) were each released on R4 000 bail by the Fouriesburg Magistrate’s Court. This was after they had appeared before the magistrate’s court on Thursday facing charges of malicious damage to property. The trio are
expected to appear before the same court on 31 October. Apparently five suspects were arrested, but two of them were released after they could not be linked with the crime. Sgt Majang Skalkie, the police spokesperson, said last week Tuesday morning the police arrested five suspects for malicious damage to property in Ficksburg. She said the arrests resulted from an incident that had taken place
on Sunday afternoon where it was alleged that two taxis which were transporting passengers to Johannesburg were both damaged by stonethrowers at the stop sign. “The driver of one of the taxis managed to stop the taxi and instructed the passengers to get out of the vehicle. “The same group of people went to the taxi and set it on fire,” she said.
She said no one was injured. Only the driver and the passengers’ property were destroyed in the fire. “The other taxi driver of a white Quantum managed to speed away and only windows were damaged. “It is alleged that both taxis were from Buthabuthe, Lesotho, on their way to Johannesburg,” she said.

How long until South Africa is truly free? ALFRED MOSIA, Bohlokong, Bethlehem:
HOW long will it take South Africans to be truly free? How long will we suffer the injustices of the self-imposed despots who faked their selfimposition through mock elections like Robert Mugabe? How long are we going to suffer Sharpeville, the Marikana massacres from the so-called government elected “by the people of the people”? How long will it take residents, who are not people because people are members of the party, to raise genuine concerns that the ruling party needs addressing? Such concerns will be rubbished and discarded by our so-called leaders. This country is at
the edge of a precipice. One wonders how long the grip will hold before it tumbles to its premeditated suicide. It was three weeks ago on a Wednesday when I had accompanied a friend to the Dihlabeng Regional Hospital to have an eye operation. To my disgust all the patients that had been booked for that day were turned away and given a tentative date somewhere around March next year. The reason being that the Department of Health had no funds. But guess what? The lords in position of power are gallivanting all over the
Statement not the truth JIMMY MOLOI, Johannesburg:
I READ in the Express Eastern Free State of 18 September about Thato’s accident on 28 August, and would like to respond to Palo Ntoane’s accusations. On that evening I called a woman by the name of Pulane whom I believe is employed by Mashinini Enterprise. Pulane told me that she had been telling the TLC driver, Thekiso, to close the manhole for a long time as she was aware that those holes were dangerous, but he ignored her. She then asked me to call Palo who was very unpleasant. Palo told me that Pulane had no right to instruct the driver. He said he was the only one who could give such instructions. In my opinion, I think Pulane asked help because she lives in the area and was aware of the danger to the children in Fateng tse Ntsho. Palo promised to go and investigate the following day, instead, Pulane and Magwaza visited the family and Magwaza offered R30 to the mother of the child to buy bread for the child which angered me very much because I found it an insult to the family. A woman called Puleng also came all the way from Bethlehem to bring medicine. The mother of the child called while Puleng was there and I questioned her about the medicine and she told me that it was how they did things if there had
been an incident like that. I told them that the child had already seen the doctor so more medicine would be a bad idea. She was not happy after that. I felt as if they were doing things wrong to try and cover up their carelessness and unprofessionalism relating to a shabby job. I would like to challenge Ntoane’s statement that he saw no signs of blood and that it had looked as if Thato had been burnt. How on earth would there be blood a day after the incident? Palo will never find any blood because his construction crew was quick to close the killer grave after the incident. Palo should know that patients are cleaned before they are given the necessary attention and should not make uninformed statements in the media. He never set foot in our house. Unless he has another name . . . Palo must start being effective in his job and should stop misleading people with lies. Thato could have died in that hole that the Dihlabeng Municipality and Mashinini Enterprise left open for four months. Their negligence nearly caused a death. When I arrived in the area Friday morning and drove around the township those holes were still not closed up, except for the one that Thato had fallen into. It looks like Palo is running his circus without any professionals monitoring him. I am very disappointed with the statement he had made in Express Eastern Free State on Wednesday, 18 September.
province with the tax payers’ money canvassing for upcoming elections. If the Department of Health cannot fulfil its mandate, it has grossly violated the rights of the nation. It must give a full account as to why it has failed and should not be given a second chance. Culprits should face litigation and get their marching orders. Barely a week after that incident an ambulance was called not far from where I reside. It was my son who called because the family was traumatised.
He said the call centre had asked him senseless questions such as What was the person doing? What was she doing then? When the ambulance arrived an hour later, the person had died. The crew summoned quick response cars for back-up. What for? There are complaints and suggestion boxes at all the hospitals – they are just decorations. To whom are we going to direct our concerns when the leaders are suspects awaiting conviction? I wish I could reiterate the words of Paul to the Galatians: “You foolish Galatians, who bewitched you?” We see and hear these things, but come election time, we vote for the same party, a party composed of self-confessed mafiosos.

EASTERN FREE STATE
“Iyo, we love it. Even the competition locally is a m a z i n g .” – L u l a m a Menzi
THE Free State boxer in blue and white fights for the gold against the Gauteng boxer in red and white.
Teams pack a punch } Tladi Moloi THE Free State came fourth during the four-day 2013 South African National Boxing Association’s (SANABO) Youth and Junior Championships which were held in the Tiisetsang Secondary School Hall in Bohlokong, Bethlehem. The Free State collected five medals during this historical tournament that left many people in Dihlabeng overwhelmed. They won two bronze, a silver and two gold medals. The Eastern Cape dominated by winning more medals which made them the best team of the tournament. They won 23 medals: 6 bronze; 7 silver and 9 gold. Gauteng came second with three bronze, nine silver and eight gold medals. KwaZulu-Natal won seven bronze, eight silver and eight gold medals and the Northern Cape six bronze, two silver and one gold with the Western Cape going back home with one bronze medal. Fusi Hlasoa, the Free State Boxing Organisation’s president who was
also a team coach during the tournament, said he was happy that they had finished fourth in the tournament. He said it was an improvement compared to previous years in which they would have finished last with one medal or even none. “We have improved and surely with the experience gained from the tournament we’ll keep on climbing until we claim the first sport,” he said. He said they would have won more medals had it not been for some of their players being disqualified during the tournament. “Some of our players were disqualified because of documentation. We’ll make sure this does not happen in future,” he said. Hlasoa said the only difference between them and the other teams was that the other teams were supported in numbers. In the game, however, they were on the same level. “The standard of the tournament was top-class and we are happy that we did not fail in hosting it. It was a successful tournament indeed and we want to thank everyone who con-
tributed to its success,” he said. Lulama Menzi, the Eastern Cape team manager, said the standard of the competition had been very high and added that Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal had given them a run for their money. He said it had been the first time that they had won the youth and junior championships after they had won juniors and seniors in 2010. “All the teams wanted to win, but in the end we proved to be the best. The competition was tough and I am happy that my team could stick to the basics,” he said. Menzi said the standard of boxing in the Eastern Cape was like soccer in Johannesburg. He said they lived for boxing in that part of the country. “Iyo, we love it. Even the competition locally is amazing,” he said. He ended by saying the tournament had been well organised pointing out that the place that they slept at felt like home. “Those people know how to organise big events. Everything was top class and they attended to problems immediately,” he said.
