Bus service grows its fleet } Tladi Moloi “SINCE the arrival of our new buses our financial status has been healthy,” said Jackie Ntshingila, the chairperson of the Maluti Bus Service. She said they had hoped to do a little better after the number of buses had been increased. “The old buses gave many problems and we lost money because we had to maintain them time and time again. But since having the new ones this is now a thing of the past,” she said. Ntshingila spoke at a recent handing-over ceremony which was held at the Maluti Bus Depot in Phuthaditjhaba, Qwaqwa. In October 2012 the idea of the new buses was initiated by the Free State Department of Police, Roads and Transport and in July eight new buses were handed over to them. Last Wednesday 6 new buses were handed over by MAN after the bus company had bought 28 new buses. The last seven are expected to be delivered before the end of this month and that will bring the number of new buses bought to 35. Ntshingila said she was happy that the company was growing every day and added that it was because they had worked hard. She said it had not been easy in the beginning and they had faced many challenges, but in the end they could easily overcome all of them. “I want to thank the executive committee and Ace Magashule, the premier of the Free State, for making this a reality. “They have played a big role. We should make sure that we hold hands for the growth of this company. We should always talk to each other when there are things we don’t understand,” she pleaded. She urged the employers, shareholders and the management to make sure that the company did not suffer because of their differences. She said they should start to trust each other. “We should make sure that our

If we really want this to work for us, we should not expect money at present, but remind ourselves that we are investing in the future. “Statistics have shown that the collectively black-owned companies
collapse because people have hidden agendas. We should change this,” she said. Tumelo Phahlo, the chief director of Police, Roads and Transport, said they had made a commitment in 2002 that everyone transporting people would be subsidised by the
government and that that was happening now. “Our government is faithful and that is only because we don’t make promises, but commitments,” he said. Phahlo said when they had come on board there had been many prob-
lems because some of the ex-employees had claimed that they had been unfairly dismissed. “We had to give ex gratia payments to those people before we could go any further,” he said. He said government was committed to seeing the company grow.

Serial rapists jailed for offences LEFU KOOS LEFUME (19) has been sentenced to life imprisonment plus 30 years while Fana Samuel Mokoena (22) from the Petsana Township near Reitz was sentenced to an effective 25 years’ imprisonment. Both Lefume and Mokoena were sentenced after they had been found guilty on charges of rape by the Bethlehem High Court on Friday. Mokoena was sentenced for raping three women from Petsana between 2008 and 2012 in the street and another in her house,
while Lefume was found guilty for raping an 11-year-old minor, a woman (23) from Mashaeng near Fouriesburg and a 68-yearold pensioner who was on her way back home from church. The three were raped between July and August 2011 and January 2012. The suspect was younger than 18 when he had committed his first offence in 2010 after which he received a suspended sentence for raping a 14-year-old girl. He was arrested in January after the
police had received positive results from forensics in Pretoria which linked him to three cases through DNA tests. He received 15 years each for raping a woman and a pensioner, but a life sentence for raping and kidnapping a minor. The case was investigated by Det. WO Malefetsane Mokone. The Bethlehem Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit closed these rape cases on the two serial rapists from Fouriesburg and Reitz.
HIDDEN cow ears have sent Sabata Mohlolo (31) and Tanki Selatela to jail. Mohlolo from Lesotho and Selatela are expected to re-appear before the Phuthaditjahaba Magistrate’s Court on Friday for bail application. They appeared briefly before the same court on Thursday. Selatela was arrested after a tip-off from one of the community members who alerted the police of a house at Monontsa Village in Qwaqwa where a suspect was seen hiding the ears of a cow on the roof of his house. It is alleged that he had also hidden the skin of the cow in a shallow hole in the yard after some of the meat had been eaten and other sold to the community. His accomplice, Selatela, was later arrested after his partner in crime had confessed that they had consumed the meat together. Sgt. Mmako Mophiring said a farmer from Toeka Farm in the district Phuthaditjhaba had reported 12 cows worth R75 000 stolen. He said after the report the community of Monontsa Village saw a man slaughtering a cow in his yard on the same weekend. “He sold some of the meat and ate the rest with family and friends. He hid the ears of the cow on the roof removing evidence and dug a shallow hole for the skin. “People saw the incident and informed the Phuthaditjhaba Stock Theft Unit who arrested the man and his friend. They found the ears and dug up the skin as part of the evidence collected from the house,” he said. Mophiring said the case linked the two men to farmers of whom 12 cows were stolen because the police later recovered two animals.

Magashule gives Zuma thumbs-up } Selloane Khalane LOBBYING for support for preferred candidates to represent the ANC in government began ahead of the country’s general election next year. The ruling party in the Free State started its race at the provincial list congress held last Thursday in Welkom with Ace Magashule, the ANC’s chairperson and premier, urging members to give Pres. Jacob Zuma a vote of confidence by nominating him. “Zuma must be number one on your list,” said Magashule, addressing more than 500 delegates from 222 branches across the province. Zuma’s nomination will grant him a second term in office as president of South Africa having already secured a second term as party leader. He was re-elected unopposed as the party’s leader at last year’s national congress held in Bloemfontein. The ANC’s provincial congress, which was a week ago rescheduled for last Thursday, saw members nominate their preferred leaders to represent the party in both provincial and national legislatures after next year’s general election. Magashule encouraged delegates to support the current national leadership, adding that the party intended to retain 60% of the current members of legislature in the province. Referring to rumours of a rift between his deputy and the Mangaung Metro executive mayor, Thabo Manyoni, Magashule said individuals and the media would not sow divisions between them. “Manyoni and I are solid,” he said. The same sentiments were shared by Manyoni who pronounced the close bond he has with his long-time
ally Magashule: “Just because we don’t always agree does not mean there is fall-out between us. As long as Magashule is in leadership, I’ll always be comfortable.” William Bulwane, the ANC provincial secretary, said delegates were to vote for 30 candidates provincially who would represent the party locally. According to Bulwane, additional members could be added to ensure the party had a reserve list. With the election looming, the party is determined to triple its efforts to reclaim the four seats it had lost to opposition parties in the previous election in 2009. Although Bulwane said Dan Kgothule, the Free State MEC for Sport, remained a loyal member of the party, several delegates at the conference who wanted to remain anonymous said Kgothule’s head was on the chopping block. “Kgothule’s name might not appear on the list when the results are revealed,” said a delegate. Sam Mashinini, the Free State chairperson of Cosatu and member of the ANC Free State provincial executive committee, told journalists that Magashule’s long reign as chairperson of the party in the province was democratic. “You cannot dictate to democracy,” Mashinini said. Bulwane said the ANC was not worried about the inroads made by Julius Malema’s political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). “It is a matter of concern, because our young comrades are flocking to the EFF without understanding the economic policies of the party,” Bulwane explained. Results of the much anticipated list conference are expected to be revealed after ten days from the day of nomination.

THE Free State Department of Education invites unemployed graduates between the ages of 18 and 30 with no work experience to apply for the 2014 internship programme. The purpose of the internship programme is to address skills shortages by providing unemployed graduates with much-needed work experience to increase their employability. About 100 unemployed graduates will benefit from this programme. Applications are invited from young people who have the necessary qualifications in the following fields: Communication and Journalism, Internal Auditing, Information Technology, Service Delivery Improvement, Supply Chain Management, Research and Policy Development, Financial Management and Civil Engineering. Applications should include the following: A certified copy of your gr. 12 certificate, certified copies of all certificates, certified copies of Identity Document and curriculum vitae. Application forms are available from the Free State Department of Education in the Sinodale Gebou, St Andrew Street, Bloemfontein, and municipal offices. The closing date for submitting application forms is 29 November. Late applications will not be considered. Nozi SuperSport Let’s Play Sports Star of the Year NOSIACWASE SYLVIA DUBE (18) was chosen as the Express Eastern Free State SuperSport Let’s Play Sports Star of the Year for her excellent performance in boxing. She was followed by Martin Saayman, a karate player, and Thandaza Bakamela a chess player. Nozi, as she is known by her friends, began her boxing career at the age of 14 in 2009 at the Miling Tiger Boxing Club in Bethlehem. Nozi won gold at the O.R Tambo Provincial Games in 2011 and was named the Thabo Mofutsanyana Sports Woman of the Year. Last year at the National Boxing Women’s Tournament that was held in Bloemfontein she once again won gold. She went on to compete at the South African boxing championships that was held in Cape Town and walked away with a silver medal. She went on to be named the Free State Female Boxer of the Year. Earlier this year she was named the u.51 kg Free State champion. Nozi received a silver medal at the South African boxing championships that was held in Pretoria. She dreams of representing South Africa in international competitions including the Olympic Games. Her motto is No words shall determine the best; the best is out of action. Martin Saayman (14), a learner of the Dirkie Uys High School in Warden, has been selected for his excellent performance in karate. Martin has been doing karate for the past three years. He has competed in 19 championships all over South Africa and has won a total of 35 medals. He received the
following awards for karate: 2010 – floating trophy for best kumite in Tenshinkan; 2011 – certificate for second-best kumite Tenshinkan. Last year he received a trophy from Shotokan Karate for being karateka of the year. In July 2012 he took part at the Tenshinkan All Styles Championships that was held in Bethlehem, where he won a silver medal in kumite and gold in kata. Earlier this year he participated at the Shotokan All Styles in Warden where he walked away with a gold medal in kumite and a silver medal in kata. At the Karate South African Championships that was held in Durban he received a bronze medal in kumite. Martin’s role model is Bruce Lee. He trains five days a week and is currently training in Harrismith at the Japan Karate Association and trains under Sensei Charlene Stopforth. His motto is Hard work and dedication always give positive results. Winners can never be quitters and quitters can never be winners. Thandaza Bakamela was selected for her excellent chess achievements. This young chess dynamo has been taking home awards since the tender age of six. At just nine years old she is not only the u.9 district champion but the u.9 provincial champion as well. In 2010 she was named u.6 provincial champion and the following year she became the u.7 provincial champion. In 2012 Thandaza became the u.8 provincial champion in addition to the u.8 national champion. Thandaza’s motto is Let us play games and read our books.

Weekend soccer round-up } Tladi Moloi UPRISING FC have registered their first win of the Dihlabeng Mayoral League season while Zebra Force maintained their unbeaten run. They remain at the top of the log with 26 points after ten league games. Saturday AC Milan played to a two-all draw against SuperSport FC who are sitting second on the league table with
20. The game took place at the Clarens open ground. SuperSport FC are just six points behind the log leader. Tshuks narrowly beat Tower United by 1-0 in a tight contest played at the Du Plessis Sports Grounds. The red-hot Zebra Force continued with their impressive form by beating the Golden Eagles by 1-0 in a game played at the Fouriesburg Show Grounds. The struggling Free State Stars Development Academy registered their
second win of the season by beating Pappilion 2-1. The game took place at the Du Plessis Sports Grounds. A triple header at the Du Plessis Sports Grounds saw the 2013 Mayoral League top-8 runners-up, Karolo FC, winning by 2-1 against Economas Eagles. Sunday A league game between the champions of the Dihlabeng Mayoral League top 8, Real Madrid, and Slabberts Ajax
saw Madrid win by 6-5 in the 11-goal driller. The game took place at the Fateng tse Ntsho Stadium. One goal against Cafu FC was enough to hand Uprising FC their first win of the season and surely that has boosted their morale going in to the next game. Mighty Wits thrashed Defence FC by 3-1 at the Du Plessis Sports Grounds with Denma Super Eagles and Mighty Gunners wrapping up the weekend results with a two-all draw.

} Tladi Moloi SUPER EAGLES narrowly beat Clarens Galaxy 2-1 in the Nedbank preliminary stage on Sunday in a game that took place in the Bohlokong Stadium. Bongani Mofokeng scored two goals to book his side a place in the second stage of the tournament, while Mokhele Raselemane netted the only goal for Galaxy. Eagles will play against Bloemfontein Young Tigers in the next stage of the tournament, while FC Hunters will play against Dinonyana FC. The dates and venues for the two games are yet to be confirmed. The winners of the two games will play against each other in the final to produce a team from the Free State Safa Second Division that will play against the winner of the Safa Free State SAB League in order for Safa Free State to have a team in the last 32-draw of the Nedbank Cup. The Bethlehem-based Eagles won their first game against Bubchu United 2-1, while Galaxy had a walkover courtesy of Moving Spurs who did not show up for the game. In the end, the final saw Eagles and Galaxy playing in an entertaining final ending in 2-1. Mgababa Manchu, the Eagles mentor, said he was concerned with the team’s level of fitness and added that they would have
to work hard if they wanted a chance to compete for the league title. He said he would love to see his side playing in the Nedbank Cup’s last 32. “Playing in the last 32 will motivate the boys. It is known that it is every player’s dream to play against an Absa Premier League team,” he said. Manchu said many teams that had reached that stage from second division had managed to win the league referring to Baroka FC and the Maluti FET College. “The two teams that had played in that competition worked on their form and maintained it throughout the league championship. It paid off for them because both teams now play in the National First Division,” he said. Zulu Kgauta, Galaxy’s head coach, said he was happy with his team’s performance and added that it had been their first tough game. He said the game had been a good test for his side ahead of the league kick-off. “We started the game at a slow pace and, unfortunately, they punished us early in the first half. In the second half we changed our play because we read them throughout the first half and they started defending because we changed our stance from defence to attack,” he said.

ORLANDO PIRATES were denied a second star as they lost 2-0 to Al Ahly in the decisive leg of the CAF Champions League Final in Cairo on Sunday. The defending champions won the event for a record-extending eighth time thanks to second-half strikes from Egyptian legend Mohamed Aboutreika and Ahmed Abdel-Zaher at the Arab Contractors Stadium. Ahly, 3-1 victors on aggregate, ended the game with ten men as Sherif Abdel-Fadil received his second caution for body-checking Daine Klate in an aerial challenge in the 83rd minute. The teams traded blows in midfield in the opening exchanges, with Pirates winger Klate sending a tame free-kick straight at goalkeeper Sherif Ekramy following a foul on Sifiso Myeni. At the other end, Ahly’s Mohamed Naguib flashed a header wide of the target in the 15th minute. Bucs, continental champions in 1995, nearly broke the deadlock in the 20th minute, but Ekramy was quick off his line to foil Tlou Segolela in a one-on-one situation. Pirates keeper Senzo Meyiwa was called into action two minutes later, as he parried away Abdel-Zaher’s long-range effort. Sea Robbers fullback Thabo Matlaba, who netted a last-gasp equaliser in the first leg, threatened just past the half-hour mark, but his powerful drive was well gathered by Ekramy. Segolela wasted a great chance to score in the 35th minute, as he headed wide at the back post off a telling right-wing cross from Klate. The hosts nearly struck a minute before the interval, but Meyiwa came to his side’s rescue with a brave save to thwart Abdel-Zaher. Ahly drew first blood nine minutes after the break, as an unmarked Aboutreika calmly stabbed the ball home from close range. Bucs came agonisingly close to equalising but Lennox Bacela failed to hit an open net, albeit from a tight angle, after rounding the keeper. However, the contest was effectively killed off when Abdel-Zaher placed the ball past Meyiwa inside the box in the 78th minute, with the visitors unable to find a way back. It was an especially remarkable triumph for Al Ahly given the lengthy suspension of their domestic football due to ongoing political unrest in the north African country. – KickOff.com

DLA2 FOOTBALL CLUB are the champions of the Safa Thabo Mofutsanya Regional League Mashinini Enterprise Trust Top 8 Cup. Dla2, a team from the Monontsha Village in Qwaqwa, were bestowed with the championship trophy. They beat Dikwena FC by 4-2 during the penalty shoot-out after a 2 all draw in the 120 minutes of the game at the Bohlokong Stadium on Saturday. Thabiso Motaung and Mojalefa Mopeli scored the two goals for Dikwena while Letsoela Mochabeng, who walked away with the top goal scorer award, scored a brace for the champions. Sifiso Dladla and Nngozi Nhlapho missed two penalties to hand over the trophy to Dla2 who are currently leading the log on the Stream A of the Safa Thabo Mofutsanyana SAB League. Dla2 received an R8 000 cheque, gold medals and a trophy while Di-kwena received R4 000 and silver medals for
losing in the finals. Even though Dla2 were the favourite to win the cup, they had to sweat for their prizes. They had to come from behind twice to send the game to the penalties. Motaung broke the ice early in the first half giving Dikwena and early 1-0 lead, but Dla2 responded before the interval with Mochabeng levelling matters 1-1. A few minutes into the second half, Mopeli extended the lead for Dikwena to 2-1. Dla2 kept pressing in search of the equaliser and their die-hard behaviour paid off as Mo-chabeng completed his brace. Before the final Mighty Wits beat Manyatseng United Brother 4-1 to finish third in the tournament with United Brothers securing the fourth sport. Zoa Motloung, the Dla2 head coach, said he was disappointed with the fact that the game had to be decided on penalties after he had promised to upset the opponents in the final. He said his players had undermined the opponents and added that they
nearly paid the price. “We beat them in the Nedbank Cup a week ago and my boys thought it would just be a walkover. Final games are different from league games and they should know that,” he said.
