FREE STATE STARS have fired their long-serving head coach, Steve Komphela. Komphela was shown a red card after Ea Lla Koto lost 2-0 to the Soweto giants of Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday. Themba Sithole, who was the assistant coach to Komphela, will take over the reigns while

management look for a head coach replacement. Bethlehem-based Stars are sitting 11th on the log with 12 points from 11 matches, after 3 wins, 3 draws and 5 losses. Komphela has been with Stars since 2010, joining the club from Platinum Stars. Rantsi Mokoena, the team general manager, has confirmed that they had parted ways with

Komphela and added that Sithole would be the team caretaker coach until they announced the new coach. He said they amicably parted ways with the coach on Sunday after their meeting. “We felt that we needed to try something new as the results were not coming forth. The team did not play well, everyone witnessed that. “Komphela is an experienced

coach and he knew what would happen when the results were not coming. We had a meeting with the coach on Sunday and after long negotiations we agreed on the terms,” he said. Mokoena said they did not deserve to be where they were on the Absa Premier log table with the players they had brought into the team. “We have good players, but our position on the league

does not reflect that,” he said. Sithole’s first test comes as early as today when he will be leading the struggling and wounded Stars in a league clash against the University of Pretoria at the Tuks Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 19:00. After today’s game Stars will be left with one game against Moroka Swallows before the Christmas break.

Early Christmas for survivors } Tladi Moloi CHRISTMAS came early for some cancer survivors in Qwaqwa. They received donations on Thursday, courtesy of the Job Club Women of Worth in Qwaqwa and the South African Council for Businesswomen (SABCW). The donations included cell phones, blankets, toiletries and pyjamas. It was presented at the Cultural and Recreational House in Phuthaditjhaba. According to Monni Kunene, the president of the Job Club Women of Worth, they met with a few of the cancer survivors and asked them to write a wish list and submit it to the SABCW. Kunene shared her experience as a cancer survivor. “In most cases we were regarded as dead and people did not take us seriously. “A few years back I decided I should unite the cancer survivors. There are days we highlight the issue of HIV/Aids, but not one for cancer,” she said. After she spoke to the cancer survivors, she asked them what they would want for Christmas. “I wanted them to feel special. They should not give up on life because this is not a death trap,” she said. Kunene said she would like to thank the SABCW for what they did for them and added that she hoped for more support in future. Hester du Bruyn, the national vice-president of the SACBW, said: “We have a new branch in Bethlehem. We acknowledged the Women of Worth group and we asked them to identify the needs in the communities they lived in. They told us that we should create jobs.” Du Bruyn said they decided to visit the cancer survivors. “These people are important in the community and we should not forget them,” she said.

Forum offers support } Lesego Ditheko A WIDOW’S FORUM has been launched by the Free State government’s executive council. Headed by Premier Ace Magashule and Social Development MEC Sisi Ntombela, the forum coincided with the launch of the 16 Days of Activism of no Violence against Women and Children activities and was held at the historic Waaihoek area in Bloemfontein last week. According to Ntombela, the forum aims to support the widows of the South African National Defence Force members who lost their lives in the Central African Republic (CAR), Rose Tatane, wife of Andries Tatane and the widow of the police officer who lost his life in Marikana, Rustenburg, during the miner’s strike in August last year. Ntombela said cases of abuse had risen in the past few months across the country and the country was still reeling in shock from the mutilation of the two young girls in Diepsloot, the Anene Booysen case as well as the shocking discovery of bones belonging to two little girls who disappeared three years ago. Jane Michelle* says she experienced abuse in her family after her 85-year-old mother was raped by a 20-year-old man who gained entry into the house by pretending to be a police officer. “My four-year-old daughter experienced this terror after she had been raped by my boyfriend. I was and am unemployed and this led me to give in to this man’s cruelty, because we could not survive without his provision. I admit I was stupid and naïve to let my child’s dignity and humanity be destroyed by this man because of a need to survive. “I would like to urge women out

there not to let any man get between you and your children, especially girls. I did that once and I sure will never make that mistake again,” she said. Another woman who survived abuse is Maki Mafojane*, currently an inmate at the Kroonstad Prison, who said she was involved in an abusive relationship. She said her husband would come home late intoxicated and physically abuse her. “I was not allowed to talk nor look at people, especially men, because I’d be accused of dating them. My husband was very jealous and that jealousy turned him into a possessive man,” she said. Maki said one evening her late husband came home drunk and she soon realised he was there to harm her. “As he came in and walked towards me I realised he was holding a knife. I ran away with my daughter so that he did not come near my child. As I turned he came rushing with the knife already aimed to stab me. We fought for the knife,” said a distraught Maki. According to Maki the knife ended up in her hand, everything went blank and the knife plunged into the husband’s chest. “To the widows of the men who lost their life serving their community in the mines, police and around the community, we as the government would like to assure you that you are not alone, we are with you. In Sesotho we say Motho ke Motho ka batho (A person is a person through other people). “Let us hold hands with you and take this leap of faith to make those within and around our community feel safe and accepted,” said Mangaung Metro mayor Thabo Manyoni. *Not their real names.

NEWS IT would appear there are no bounds to the ANC’s audacity when it comes to riding rough shod over the sensibilities of the Christian Community in South Africa, says Theunis Botha, the leader of the Christian Democratic Party (CDP). The latest debacle was a question included by the Department of Education in the matric exam

ANC knows no bounds paper where the children were asked to direct a scene where a nine-month-old baby is raped. “As if we have not been experiencing these contemptible deeds on a regular basis in our townships.

How sick have we become to contemplate unnecessarily exposing our children to such things. The moral decay in the country has been brought about by the permissiveness we have allowed and the

child rape scandal is just one of the symptoms. To expose children in this crude way will in no way contribute to moral rejuvenation,” he says. Botha also responds to the latest

controversial remarks made by the Free State premier, Ace Magashule, who said to be angry with the ANC is to be angry with God. “It would appear that Christians and churches have succumbed to the everyday blasphemy. We call on Christians to make it clear to the ANC that such blasphemy will cost them votes,” Botha concludes.

Mosias dream big } Tladi Moloi LIMAKATSO MOSIA started running in 2009 when she was in gr. 9 at the Karabelo Intermediate School. Between then and now she has become one of the best cross-country runners in the Free State. “Since I was a child I’ve always loved running,” says Limakatso, a first-year Bachelor of Education (Foundation Phase) student at the University of the Free State, Qwaqwa Campus.

She said she had realised a few years ago that one could make a living out of athletics through scholarships and bursaries given to deserving sports stars. “The last three years have been good. I managed to make it to the schools’ national championships in Pretoria as an under 18 runner in 2010. I also performed well in the 4 km category in Mpumalanga during 2011.” Limakatso was named the 2013 UFS (Qwaqwa Campus) Sports Woman of the Year and believes that hard work pays off

at the end. “I never knew that doing what I love would one day open doors for me. “I was recruited to register at the UFS by the sports officer, Danile Zoko, who had always followed my performance even while I was at high school,” said Mosia. Her team mate, Serame Mosia is her pillar of strength and has also had a fruitful 2013. He was named the UFS Qwaqwa Campus 2013 Sportsman of the Year. “My biggest achievement this year was getting a bronze medal at the Eastern Free State championships, held in June. I also managed to qualify for the national championships,” he said. Limakatso and Serame have big dreams and anticipate better opportunities.

Site a disgrace THABO “THIZABLOKING” MOKOENA, Tsheseng, Moeding, Qwaqwa: MY people, I greet you all in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen. I have been pondering about how our youth spend their internet data bundles and airtime. Guess what? I have found the answer. They are spending them on social networks and useless sites. There was a social network page called Ou Toilet where people were writing demeaning and insulting comments about each other, but that is now old news. There is a new disgusting page called Qwaqwa Rocks. Oh my word, people are insulted on the page and marriages are destroyed by the rumours. As a young person, I get so disappointed and often ask myself why people are not using social networks like Facebook, Whatsapp and Twitter to rather connect with people from different places. Sadly they use these defamatory sites to bring down their peers. I believe that should use their data bundles for more important things, like searching for jobs because most of our youth is unemployed. That is why they have time to plot the downfall of others. I am shocked that school learners are also involved in this foolery because it has different categories like Qwaqwa places and Qwaqwa schools, just to mention a few. On the site it is almost certain that there are secret declarations of love. If you love someone why don’t you go straight to him or her and tell them rather than writing on that filthy page? Young people, have you heard the phrase time is money? Stop fooling around. Lastly, I am shockingly disappointed at the creator of that site. If I were given a chance to meet him/her I would simply ask them to explain what purpose of the site is.

Pause, take stock ALFRED MOSIA, Bohlokong, Bethlehem: A SHORT while before the dawn of a democratic South Africa, the ruling ANC party unfolded a document Ready to govern. Political leaders were elected by the electorate to serve and not to be masters. These so-called leaders regard themselves as monarchs who are above the law, who can build themselves royal palaces with taxpayers’ money. So the question is was the ANC ready to govern? Government voted in power by the people is there to fulfil a mandate of which it must give an account to its electorate. It must build houses, it must create job opportunities, create health facilities, etc. That was the mandate they gave us. Our nation has increased, informal settlements have grown bigger, backyard tenants have increased. People are contained from bursting out in anger by food parcels and lies that they will be relocated very soon. Houses were identified for demolition, so that occupants thereof could have new houses erected for them. It is sad to say those houses are yet have not been completed, the would be beneficiaries are still in shacks. Here is a derogatory term to increase your vocabulary. Mantsha-Tlala (to relieve hunger) is when people are temporarily employed to do menial jobs. Lastly, if you are going to vote the ANC into power again, you should know you have played a part in killing the nation.

Maluti want a win

} Tladi Moloi

THE Maluti FET College have lost their third league game in a row while African Warriors redeemed themselves with a 3-2 win over Blackburn Rovers in a National First Division (NFD) league game that took place in the Charles Mopeli Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Maluti started the league on a positive note winning most of their away games, but their head coach, Morena Ramorebudi, should be a concerned man after his defence gave away 15 goals in their three previous league games. They lost 7-4 against Black Leopards, 4-1 to United FC before losing 4-2 to the runaway log leaders, Milano United, on Sunday at the Athlone Stadium. Maluti last registered a win in October away to Thanda Zulu

Royals when they won by 1-0. Maluti will be hoping to turn their bad spell around when they welcome FC Cape Town in the league encounter on Sunday afternoon in the Charles Mopeli Stadium. The College boys remain 12th on the log with 13 points after 12 games while FC Cape Town is sitting 14th with 12 points after the same number of games. The two teams are separated by three points. The blue and white boys will play two games before the Christmas break and they hope to collect maximum points in all those games. They will travel to the Makhulong Stadium to play against Jomo Cosmos next Saturday before they play the last game of 2013 against Roses United in the Charles Mopeli Stadium on 22 December.

Tselane rakes in prizes } Tladi Moloi TSELANE MOTSOAOSELE (19) from the Motampelong Village in Qwaqwa was the big winner during the Qwaqwa/Golden Gate Half-Marathon which took place on Saturday morning. Motsoaosele, who still competes in the junior category, scooped three prizes. She finished second in the male category. She scooped a prize for finishing second in the marathon and first prize in the junior category before wrapping it up with a first prize in the category First Setsing Super Spar runner. She walked away with R800 to spend for Christmas. Chabeli Nyelimane from Bloemfontein and Manti Mabizela from Qwaqwa were the new winners of the half-marathon and they walked away with R1 000 each in prize-money. Nyelimane was the winner in the men’s category while Mabizela was the women’s winner. Motsoaosele said she was overwhelmed and did not expect to win something on the day. She said she was not fit for the race as she had no time to prepare. “I was busy with examinations and there was no time to prepare for the race. However, I managed to finish second on the day thanks to God who gave me strength to finish the race,” she said. The half-marathon started at the Basotho Cultural Village and ended at the Setsing Super Spar. It was sponsored by the Setsing Super Spar and Golden Gate SANPark. Nyelimane said winning the race was like a walk in the park. He said there was no pressure whatsoever as he led the race from the word go. “There was a big gap behind me and I did not expect that.
