HE touched my life and that of many freedom fighters – Ace Magashule ACE MAGASHULE, the chairperson of the ANC and premier of the Free State, is saddened by the passing of the iconic revolutionary, statesman and former president of the first free and democratic South Africa, Tata Nelson Mandela. “This founding father of the democratic South Africa was more than just a comrade to me; he touched my life and that of many freedom fighters in the most profound way. “He taught us to be humble and humane in the quest of building a proud South Africa that was to become a significant player in the community of nations. “He taught us to forgive by engendering a sense of pride and restoring the dignity of

Africans within a non-racial global society. “We have been guided by his high level of morality, his legacy. “On behalf of the people of the Free State, I join Pres. Jacob Zuma in sending our condolences to his wife, family, grand- and great-grandchildren. We’ll sorely miss this untainted Isithwalandwe. His legacy will live on. May his soul rest in peace. “There are no words to describe how we and the rest of the nation felt on learning of his passing. Perhaps it is a consolation that he lived for all of us and leaves behind a capable leadership that will lead this country in the way he would have done by ensuring that we continue to build a non-racial, non-sexist, free, democratic and prosperous South Africa. “We shall continue to strive for the realisation of all the ideals that he lived and eventually died upholding.”

In fond memory of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela

Tributes from far and wide pour in South Africa has lost a father and a hero – Nelson Mandela. After the news broke that one of the world’s greatest leaders has died, tributes have been streaming in.

THE TREE HAS FALLEN – Butana Komphela “The biggest tree has fallen, its sound resonates throughout the country and the entire world,” said Butana Komphela, the Free State MEC for Police, Roads and Transport.

A legacy second to none – Muslim Network The South African Muslim Network (Samnet) joins all South Africans in mourning the passing of Nelson Mandela, an icon in South Africa and across the world and an inspiration for

so many of us. “We convey our most sincere condolences to his family, the ANC and South Africans at large. Madiba left a legacy second to none in the annals of South African history and although his unshakeable passion to eradicate injustice brought him and his family much strife and suffering, he remained steadfast in championing the cause of the poor, powerless and down-trodden. “To him justice and equality were indivisible and had to be relentlessly pursued irrespective of race, colour or creed and without fear or favour. “Remarkably, he never devi-

ated from the consistent, principled response to injustice and inhumanity throughout his life even when it was politically incorrect,” said Faisal Suliman, the Chairperson of Samnet.

Madiba is and will forever remain a true inspiration. – Thabo Kessah Thabo Kessah, the senior officer of strategic communication at the University of the Free State, Qwaqwa Campus, said Madiba is and forever would be a true inspiration and a glaring example of selfless leadership. “He excellently played his role as unifier of the nation, the African continent and the entire world. Two questions though remain: Are we ready enough to take the baton from him to allow him to rest in peace? Do we truly understand and believe in the ideals that he said he was prepared to die for?”

Mixed feelings about new homes } Tladi Moloi

FOR the past 13 years, Christina Majane (54) and her seven children have been living in a two-roomed house at Mbeki Park, Phase 1, near Bluegumbosch, Qwaqwa. Majane, whose house was renovated by the Free State government, said she was overwhelmed with what the government had done for her family. She said: “I am happy that the government has built a house for me. Today, I am smiling like other people. I live in a house with two bedrooms, a dining room and a bathroom,” she said. She said in the past they had to share the rooms at night, while the other children in the house slept in the kitchen. “Those in the kitchen had to wake up early to avoid visitors finding them there,” she said. Majane said the house in which they lived before had only one exit. She added that she had not believed Premier Ace Magashule when he told them the construction of the houses would be completed before Christmas. Majane spoke to Express Eastern Free State at the Bluegumbosch Stadium where Olly Mlamleli, the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements, issued the title deeds and later opened the completed houses at Mbeki Park, Phase 1. Mahadi Khala (42), another beneficiary, said she was unhappy because the rooms did not have doors. She said that this would lead to problems when one of the house’s occupants wanted to use the bathroom. Mlamleli said she visited Qwaqwa to handover 200 houses to the beneficiaries. However, she admitted that not all the houses were complete – the total number of houses that was supposed to be completed is 3 500. She added that the department would

HAPPY: Christina Majane at the door of her newly extended house. ensure that all the beneficiaries received houses, which in turn would restore their dignity. Mlamleli issued only 300 title deeds to residents of Qwaqwa. “We have given out 7 444 title deeds to the municipalities. However, Maluti-a-Phofung has received most of these title deeds

because there we have constructed 16 225 houses there,” she said. She said the Free State premier was not happy with the living conditions of the Bluegumbosch residents when he visited the area. He apparently found people living in two-roomed houses with one exit. He then decided that those residents

should receive proper housing. “If a house has one exit it means the people in the house are not safe. Should it happen that the house caught fire, they would not have an alternative door to escape,” she said. “He then gave an instruction that I should renovate those houses.”

Forum launched to aid the disabled } Tladi Moloi THE Department of Social Development’s provincial disability forum was recently launched in the Kestell Community Hall during the Free State’s celebration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The celebration saw scores of disabled people from different towns in the Free State coming together to celebrate the day and witness the launch of the new forum. Moledi Mokati, the chairperson of the forum and provincial manager of Disabled People South Africa (DPSA) in the Free State, said the forum had been launched as per a request from Sisi Ntombela, MEC for Social Development, that she would like to have a coordinating forum that would enhance services to people with disabilities. “We are going to have programmes within the forum which will be aimed at fast-tracking the services for our people. The forum is going to deal with the challenges facing people with disabilities. We don’t have a disability centre in the province and that is one of the things we as a forum will look at,” he said. Mokati said their big challenge for now was unemployment.

“For now that is our priority. It is not true that people with disabilities do not apply for jobs, they do. “We want to see the disabled working in various government departments. We know that not all of them will get the chance, but we’ll make sure that we encourage those who do not to start their own businesses.” Mokati said they would like to see people with disabilities contributing towards the economy of South Africa and pointed out that they would push the government to fund them. Ntombela said they had been giving money to some of the non-government organisations taking care of disabled people. She said they would also be building two Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres for people with disabilities – a first for the Free State. Ntombela said the two centres would cost R1,2 million each. “The contractors have been appointed and we hope to unveil the centres next year,” she said. Ntombela said they had received complaints about transport and promised that they would investigate that issue in order for disabled people to feel like normal people.

} Tladi Moloi THE South African Communist Party (SACP) has given the Rural Development and Land Reform Department only 14 days to respond to their recently submitted memorandum of grievances. The 14 days were counted from Monday after the memorandum had been handed over to Pule Sekawana, the deputy director general of the department, on Friday at the department offices in Bethlehem. Peter Khumalo, the SACP Thabo Mofutsanyana regional organiser, said they wanted land. He said the land had been taken from them very cheaply by the white people. “It is expensive to get the land back. Our people don’t have a place to live and for this reason we have many informal settlements,” he said. Sekawana signed for the memorandum and promised that they would make sure that they gave their response within the stipulated time. “We understand your frustration. We know we can play with anything, but not the land. You make one mistake with land and you lose it forever,” he said. ) Visit express-news.co.za or expresspaper.mobi to view the video of the march.

Maluti determined to be in top four } Tladi Moloi THE Maluti FET College are back. They registered their first National First Division league win Sunday when they narrowly beat FC Cape Town 3-2 on home turf at the the Charles Mopeli Stadium. A win has boosted the morale of the college boys after they had lost three games in a row. Maluti lost 7-4 to Black Leopards, 4-1 to United FC and 4-2 to the log leaders of Milano United AFC. The Qwaqwa-based team is now placed 11th on the league table with 16 points after 13 games. They are 13 points behind the log leaders. The free-scoring Maluti have the worst defensive record in the league thus far, followed by Thanda Zulu Royal who are at the bottom of the log with six points in 13 games. Maluti have conceded 24 goals in

13 games with Thanda collecting 23 balls behind the net. Judging from the previous games Maluti strikers have the potential to score goals but are disappointed by their defence on many occasions. Coach Morena Ramorebudi said he was happy with Sunday’s results but showed his concern by the team “giving away goals”. “We have gave away many goals. We will make sure that we work on that and hopefully we will get everything right,” he said. Ramorebudi said the reason why they have conceded more goals is because they have been playing attacking football in all their games and pointed out that at times their defences were caught offguard. “When you play attacking football, you end up conceding more goals, and when you play defensive-

ly, you are bound not to score. “So, what we need for now is to balance those two things for now,” he said. The former African Warriors assistant coach said his target is to finish in the top four but did not rule out the possibility of claiming any position above of that. “The top four is my priority for now. I know we have a good team that can do better and if any chance of winning the league arose, why should we not? We will take the win and run with it,” he said. He said he was happy with the team’s performance given the fact that it was their first campaign in the NFD. “We have competed with the experienced sides and managed to win some. That shows how determined the team is,” Ramorebudi concluded.
